Book Description

Being able to change to keep pace with a rapidly changing world is the key to business success in the '90s. Enlightened Leadership is a practical, hands-on guide to breaking through the barriers to organizational change. Doug Krug and Ed Oakley show why most efforts at change fail -- and they provide leaders with proven methods for getting their people moving in the right direction.

The key lies in showing those who would be change agents how to capitalize on their organization's greatest asset: the under-utilized talent, expertise, and energy of its existing staff. The authors' program is based on maximizing the contributions of all employees -- by sharing information, decision-making, and planning with them -- creating a shared culture of organizational goals, strategies, and methods.

Managers and leaders at all levels -- from small business owners to corporate strategists -- can use Oakley and Krug's proven techniques, including planning, communication, and motivational tools, to support their employees in effecting the positive changes that will make the difference in achieving their organizations' bottom-line goals.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-21

From Kosovo: I use the book here in Kosovo for Leadership and Management Training for Public Safety Insitutions. I found the book in 2004 while attending University and heard a lecture by Mr. Krug. The book is as relevant today as it was then, a great work which examines alternatives to traditional managment practices and perspectives. From every class I have observed "light bulbs" go off in the students heads as reflected by their keen interest in reading and discussing the material. Contradictory to the post communist mind set here in management practices, this book has been an awakening.

4 out of 5 stars A useful problem-solving strategy.......2002-09-10

Before you read on, know that I have a bias. I have recently been promoted to a department chief position, so I am actively looking for books on leadership and problem solving. The strength of this book (and I do recommend it) is that it provides a framework for how leaders might think and also provides a very concrete problem-solving strategy that you can consider trying. The authors feel that ideas need to percolate up from below, so that workers buy into change. That's fine, and that's abstract. Then they make it much more useful by giving the reader a general strategy that can be used in a variety of ways. Basically, they tell us, you should not focus on the problem. Focusing on the problem will get you bogged down. You just end up sitting around at a meeting and moaning about how bad the problem is. Instead, change your focus to solutions. Ask your people a specific series of questions such as "What is good about our current processes?" "What works?" "What do we like and want more of?" "What is our goal?" "What small steps can we then take to try to get a little closer to the solutions that will give us more of what works and what we want?"

The book is longer than it needs to be, and tends to be repetitive, but it's a fast read. I have already tried their strategy at a meeting, and I am pleased with the results that I obtained. Any book that gives me the tools to help solve some of my department's problems is a winner. It's a very general and flexible strategy, and I expect to be using it again in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Enlightened Leadership - Getting to the Heart of Change.......2002-04-24

Enlightened Leadership is a common sense, "how to" book for enacting change in an organizatin. Through the easy reading text or even the summary notes provided at the conclusion of each chapter, strategies are given to utilize the internal work force in envisioning, designing, marrying and implementing change.

Oakley and Krug profess an enlightened leader is one who has a vision and through a variety of strategies, encourages the organization's members to "buy in" and commit to following through with the change. They also indicate enlightened leaders do not necessarily need to be the visionaries. They are individuals who possess the ability to inspire others to create the vision, focus the efforts and encourage fruition. Obviously, if the vision is conceived by the organizational membership, the "buy in" dilemma is reduced.

Oakley and Krug believe individuals' self-esteem is important in the change process. The enlightened leader also knows it is healthy for the individuals' self-esteem to focus on solutions rather than just the problems. The authors give a strategy to ensure continued focus which is called "Effective Questions (EQs)". Many helpful EQ examples are given.

This book is a useful resource for today's leaders. Leadership today is so different from past leadership roles. Our changing and mobile society requires a leader to talent search and to engage his/her employees in the change process instead of mandating. This book provides tools to assist the leader in focusing the employees on solutions to the problem versus concentrating only on the problem itself and enabling employees to own the paradigm change. It was good.

Enlightened Leadership - Getting to the Heart of Change

By Ed Oakley and Doug Krug

Enlightened Leadership is a common sense, "how to" book for enacting change in an organization.

Obviously, if the vision is conceived by the organizational membership, the buy in is reduced.

This book delineates for the leader meaningful strategies/insights to attain beneficial change through "enlightened" utilization of human resources. Oakley and Krug discuss Pareto's Principle - about 20% of your employees will be open to change (the 20% that accomplish approximately 80% of the work) and approximately 80% of your employees will be resistance to change and possibly try to sabotage the new system. The authors call the 20% "Creative Thinkers" (high performers) and the 80% "Reactive Thinkers" (low performers). Creative Thinkers typically have a strong, positive self-concept where Reactive Thinkers self-esteem is typically very low. Knowing that self-esteem is a major factor in the willing acceptance of change, the enlightened leader must concentrate on improving employees' self-esteem along with the vision for change. Oakley and Krug believe it is healthy for individuals' self-esteem to focus on solutions versus problems.

The enlightened leader's challenge is to continue to focus the employees' efforts on positive, constructive solutions for change and enhancement. A strategy to ensure continued focus is called "Effective Questions (EQs)". Asking the right questions that generate creativity and listening with discernment result in continual improvement for the organization and a high level of employee satisfaction. According to Oakley and Krug, EQs positively address mindset issues in a variety of ways: EQs are open-ended, focus on increasing the energy and attention on the desired outcome, ask "what" and "how" instead of "why", assist employees to learn through the process of answering, give credit for answers (right or wrong), are multileveled, create a trust factor with the leader, help leaders become better listeners, provide clarification, and empower and value the employees. It is also important to communicate the intent that prompts the question. Employees will sense whether the employer is attempting to harm or help them.

4 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2002-02-13

Oakly and Krug provide an understandable and clear definition of what they term "Enlightened Leadership." This type of leadership approach attempts to deal with real underlying problems within organizations rather than their symptoms. It is founded on an approach that leaders must first or concurrently deal with the "mindset" or spirit of their people as well as changing processes or structures. Without positively dealing with attitudes and thinking styles among the organization all efforts of changing structures, systems or processes will meet great resistance and potential failure.

They formally define Enlightened Leadership as "the willingness and ability to draw the vision from their people and inspire and empower those people to do what it takes to bring the vision into reality. Indeed, Enlightened Leaders nurture and encourage their people to be open, creative, and innovative and find what it takes to achieve their shared objectives." This type of leadership gets the "members of the organization to accept ownership for that vision as their own, thus developing the commitment to carry it through to completion."

Much of the book is devoted to asking thought provoking questions in the authors hope that the reader can discover their own answers to an enhanced leadership approach. Much of the content in the book is a result of their personal experience working with their own clients and using their own observations. It is obviously full of valid and helpful information presented in an interesting and easy to read style.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful to the amateur trader.......2007-05-29

In a day and age where one can easily and inexpensively manage a portfolio and trade on the stock market, this book provides helpful insights into the difference between investing and speculating. I hope consequently to be more prudent in the choice of my investments. In particular there is strong warning against the speculative type of investment in companies that are full of hopes but short on a solid track record.

Significant in this is Buffets avoidance of technology stocks.

4 out of 5 stars Good words of wisdom if you are already familiar with Buffett's investing style.......2007-05-15

This book should not be your introduction to Warren Buffett's investing methods. For that I recommend "The New Buffettology" and "How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett". However, for Buffett fans who already know how to pick great stocks at great prices, these words of wisdom will help you keep your eye on the ball.

I was saddened when I found out that the narrator passed away days before this audio book was published.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and enlightening.......2007-01-09

This book contains fascinating conceptual articles on the changing nature of leadership and inspiring stories illustrating how women have created successful careers for themselves. I was particularly impressed by chapters that showed how the masculine traits of domination and control need to be replaced by organizational models based on collaboration and facilitation. Convincing evidence is cited for the value of feminine traits and the need to promote more women to senior executive roles. One writer discusses how feminine traits foster collaboration within organizations and between them and their strategic partners. I think these domains are ideally suited to feminine traits. But, there was no mention of the traits required for successful competition in aggressive markets. Here, I think, we still need masculine traits, whether in men or women. More generally, I don't think promoting more women to senior executive positions goes far enough. Organizational cultures need to change to foster a better balance of masculine and feminine traits, one to facilitate internal collaboration and the other for aggressive competitiveness externally. Books like this are great for stimulating our thinking about these vital issues.

1 out of 5 stars Carly, a leader???.......2006-03-29

I was actually interested in this book until I got to the 'Carly Fiorina' part. It was stated that she was successful at HP and the merger exceeded critics' expectations. As an HP (female) employee, I have lived through the Platt, Fiorina and now Hurd years. And, believe me Fiorina was the worst kind (and most HP'ers will agree with me). She ruined this company!! She was visionary alright --- only about making millions for herself!! Please do some REAL research before making any assumptions on the successes of any CEOs (especially Carly).

4 out of 5 stars Universal Lessons.......2005-08-22

With so many books on leadership, it's rare that one stands out as both comprehensive and new. I was skeptical that a book on "women's leadership" could effectively speak to both genders. I was surprised. While, I don't necessarily agree with all of the authors, I do appreciate the common theme that the best leaders do more listening, collaborating, and coalition-building. We can all get in that boat!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2005-08-18

What a wonderful addition to anyone's library. Through the inspirational stories told by these women, the book gave me good insight on life. That leadership in the corporate world is not just about statistics and the "bottom line" but also about learning what works and doesn't work. As in Chapter 3, Deeper Power, the chapter makes one ask questions internally on how to "do it differently". "To acknowledge and embrace individuals and their authentic selves-not jobs or titles." Very well written and I would highly recommend this book not only to improve job performance but how to improve one personally.

5 out of 5 stars Wide variety means relevant content.......2005-05-23

From David Gergen's foreward through Pat Mitchell's afterward, Enlightened Power forces us to contemplate the many traits that women bring to leadership positions and how they relate to our own roles as leaders. Whether you're working in corporate America or as an entrepreneur, you'll find guidance, insight and inspiration from the many contributers to this tome on women and leadership. Of particular interest to me were Kira Hower's chapter on "Influencing for Impact," and Karen Stephenson's chapter on "The Art and Science of Human Knowledge Networks." But, with such a wide variety of voices, I'm sure no matter where you are in your career, you will find articles that address your issues - that's the beauty of pulling together a number of different voices and viewpoints.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting approach..........2000-11-04

This book is a great read for anyone interested in the practical applications of philosophy, or even someone looking for the right spiritual answers to day-to-day work problems. Carol Osborn has taken the learnings of the ancient Chinese scripture I Ching and applied them to a hundred commonly faced modern-day work situations. The solutions presented are not quick-fix, step-by-step guides on what to do but to someone who has a little bit of faith, they can open up a lot of doors. Most importantly, they force one to think deeply about each situation and what it means in one's life. Definitely a handy book to have around.

5 out of 5 stars The Corporate Path to Nirvana.......2004-02-17

Judith Anderson shows how we can use our life experience in a business environment to know ourselves, what mental tendencies we have and how these affect ourselves and others. At first she advocates that we can do this to improve our performance and that of our company. And this is of course true. But for me it was even more valuable to have her illustrate that life offers us the learning material at the workplace so that we can understand ourselves and become aware of the effect of our actions. Therefore, The Path to Corporate Nirvana could as well have been called The Corporate Path to Nirvana.
In this book Judith Anderson (carefully) avoids using the word spiritual. The corporate setting of her book suggests that she primarily focuses on the business world. Having spent years on a spiritual path, looking for the secrets of life, and heaving learned to enjoy the process of learning about myself, I know how difficult it is to incorporate this process at work. This book showed me how do this.

5 out of 5 stars Silver Falls Press Review.......2004-02-07

Anderson hones in on and stays focused on the reality of the workplace neglected or left as a vague assumption in most business books - namely human nature. Anderson combines the comprehensions of an intuitive and highly experienced psychologist with a clear understanding of the dynamics of the workplace and the purpose of business.

5 out of 5 stars Genuine enlightenment in the workplace.......2003-11-21

I did not expect to enjoy this book as I am far from a new age person, and the title did not appeal to me. However, I was delighted with the unique out of the box perspective of the author. If you are a realist, you will find interest in this book.

5 out of 5 stars From cynicism to positive action.......2003-11-17

When I was first introduced to this book,I was put off by the title. The phrase "Corporate Nirvana" felt like an oxymoron and arose immediate cynicism in me. I thought, "Great, another step-by-step management book that tells me if I just do "A, B, and C" then "D, E,and F" will happen; and if "D, E, and F" don't happen, then obviously I have done "A, B, and C" wrong. Yet, because the person who gave me the book was someone I highly respected and trusted, I felt I needed to give the book a try. By the end of the first chapter, my cyncism quickly gave way to curiosity, appreciation, and hope.

Rather than "telling" me anything, Ms. Anderson shares her personal stories about nurturing and growing her Self in order to better nurture and grow others in the workplace. Her stories peeked my curiosity as I could see myself in similar situations. Was this what I was experiencing? Was this what others around me were experiencing? Are these the feelings that were driving the behaviors I or others exhibited? Was this how I was blocking my own and others success? I began to question "What place am I operating from? Who am I truly trying to serve? And why?"

I appreciated Ms. Anderson's willingness to make herself vulnerable to readers and to talk frankly about her fears--to describe them in detail--what they looked, sounded, and felt like, and the processes she used and continues to use to address them. Her descriptions and processes helped me to take action and start on my own journey of examining and addressing my fears and taking a frank look at how I enhance and hinder my own and others effectiveness in the workplace.

Ms. Anderson's book also gave me new found hope which continues to grow daily. Through her stories, I found new learning and new ways of being, which as I put into action, are getting different results--for both myself and my clients--moving all of us to greater success in the workplace--greater productivity, effectiveness, and self-satisfaction in the workplace. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in serving their clients better, producing greater results for their organization, developing a high-performance workforce, and bringing personal joy into the workplace and the work that one does.

5 out of 5 stars Corporate Nirvana's insights are for the real world.......2003-10-30

Corporate Nirvana was fascinating! My husband and I met at work in a corporate setting. After our children were born I left the corporate world. At first, I was attracted to Corporate Nirvana for what it might offer my husband in his corporate job. The more I read, the more the message hit home. I suspect that most marriages and basically all recurring interpersonal relationships face these same issues Ms. Anderson addresses in Corporate Nirvana.

When I left the corporate world I thought I could say good-bye to "PNVs (Popping Neck Veins)," but strong emotions don't just abide in the workplace. Now that I was not bringing home the paycheck I once had, I felt compelled to justify my existence (or, in Ms. Anderson's words, p. 125, "feel...worthy of recognition") in other ways. Whether it's working with a spouse or the significant others in your daily life to manage house repairs, engineer remodeling projects, finesse finances, delegate household chores or hire help, navigate social situations, bring up children, deal with school administrators, or run errands--there are endless opportunities in life for aggravation; and so there are also endless opportunities to be "AAA," "able to appreciate the usefulness of aggravation."

Corporate Nirvana showed me that by letting go of negative self judgments, I could put my ego in check, come from a place of wanting to be of service to others in my life, and develop the intuition to experience creative learning from the Spirit (all of which most recently led to this letter). Until Ms.Anderson's book I didn't have the paradigm to apply these principles consistently. Now with Corporate Nirvana, my sense of worth can be "attained independent of particular events, how projects turn out, or what results are accomplished." Thanks for the script!
