If you have never read Think and Grow Rich before, I would suggest reading the print version first (or at least have a copy handy). Since you will more than likely want to re-read or refer back to certain passages (i.e., the exercises that you are asked to perform).
I've read it several times over the years and thought that the audio book would be a good way to turn my 40 minute commute to work into more productive time.
Unlike the abridged version, there are no anecdotes from Napoleon Hill interspersed throughout this audiobook. However, there is a great introduction by W. Clement Stone.
I would recommend getting this version along with the abridged version simply because I think it's fascinating to hear Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone speak about this philosophy in their own words.

My comment is for the production of this paperback, not the content.
This is the poorest quality paperback I've ever seen or purchased. Large chunks of pages came loose from the glue binding almost immediately after opening the book the first time. I was on a trip and constantly had to deal with more pages coming loose and trying to fly around. Really poor quality repro.

This is one of my all-time favorite books which I re-read it at least once every other year. Ask anyone who has read this book and virtually everyone will tell you this is one of the best you will ever own. If you feel you need help succeeding in anything, then use this book as a coach. If you have the ambition, but need a plan - this book will help you. If you just need a pick me up, just read some of the stories intertwined - this book will help you.
This book is an all time great dealing with success and personal management. Dealing with practical methods for creating in oneself the ability to do whatever one puts their mind to. Starting with an idea (hence the name) one can expect to use this information to create a way to approach life that should produce positive results.

Five Stars for a Classic!.......2007-09-19
If I had known how simple it would be to change my life I would have done it long ago. I was lucky enough to be given this book by a dear friend. With proper thinking my dreams have come true. I sold my book Never Trust A Man In Alligator Loafers in just three weeks! Life has become a series of "creative solutions" and I'm happy for it. My goal is to open my mind to allow the *really big thoughts* to come through and actualize my potential. I know that when I think it's possible it is. And life magically gets a lot more fun!
Read With A Group.......2007-09-04
First of all, of the various versions of "Think and Grow Rich" that are out there, this one is my favorite. The Editor has really done his homework to bring Napoleon Hill's Original work into historical context without bringing in modern day examples like other versions do.
Secondly, I highly recommend reading this book at the rate of a chapter a week with a group study. I had read this book by myself before, but have really accelerated my Awareness by reading it every 3-4 months with a different group of people. You don't have to do it that often, but each time you read this book, you get more and more out of it!
Finally, don't just read the book, but follow the specific instructions laid out in the book. This is the book that every success book out there is based on...it's the original. Do this, and you'll find greatness.

Great book! I am half way through the book and so far it is definitely worth the price. The book gives insight on how to live like the past entrepreneurs. It teaches you to think in new ways and to use your mind to achieve all your goals. It shows you don't have to have a super high IQ to get rich or be some famous athlete or movie star. I read this book as a follow up to The Secret. Napoleon Hill was way ahead of his time - the book is a bit quaint - written in a different era - however, the concepts are very timely and thought provoking. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the Law of Attraction as it applies to business success.

The book is great. But it is frustrating to keep hearing the "editor's comment" and then "end of editor's comment" and then the comments from the editor. I appreciate the editor putting in his or her two cents, but it is frustrating when you get into the deep thought about what Napoleon Hill is saying, then suddenly, the message "editor's comment" disrupts your thought. To me, it is an ego trip of this editor by putting in too, too much of his comment. The whole CD 2 of the 9 CD is packed with Editor's comment. It is frustrated keep getting interrupted over and over by the "Editor's Comments" and I decided to vent online to let someone else know not to buy this version. If you want to buy, go for the original, the unabridged version of Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich.

I am very happy that I bought this edition of Think & Grow Rich. Having already read the original edition, I could certainly feel the difference in the effect the book had on me where-in I could relate the principles to the real life examples around me (rather than something that happened in distant past, when I was not even born :-))
Except for a minor flaw in CD - 8 where a 2 sentences are repeated respectively, the quality of the recording and oration is excellent.

It was about retraining your thoughts. I received one good idea from it, which was more of a reminder. And that was to write out; what you want, how you plan on getting it and how much your willing to give/do to get it.

Out of date and padded to the gills.......2007-06-25
If you're interested in studying the history of motivational books then this if for you. But if you need motivation there are plenty of more concise and modern books out there that are a LOT better. And even those are padded, because as a general rule there is not a whole lot that can be said to get someone motivated. Basically, to sum up this and most other motivational books, there are three important concepts that you need to burn into your mind:
1) The decision to make your life better is solely up to you, and you can make the change regardless of your IQ or ability.
2) Don't give up
3) View failures as a learning experience, and use this knowledge to get it right next time.
Granted, there are a few more ideas that support those two concepts, and these books will go into them.
I will definitely commend Napolean Hill on the fact that just about every motivational book has stolen from him. But back in the early 1900's and before people were in love with the sound of their own voice, and they didn't know how get to the point. Just read some of the comic strips from back then. They're about as funny as reading a car rental contract.
BTW, I got this book FOR FREE off the Internet. You may have to hunt a little, but it's out there. It's in the public domain.

This is one of the most motivational and practical books in the free world. While there may be an objection of sides within the definiteness of this book, I'm sure all will have to admit that most of the verbiage contained in this book does in fact hold some truth. I've found that the problem is most people just read a book and expect for a miracle to happen. I'll give you a hint into this book...Read it like you were in school. Take notes and review each chapter before moving to the next one. Then before you start the next chapter, try to apply what you've learned in your world - "the real world" and see how this works. Keep in mind this book was written almost 80 years ago and that most of still applies in the 21st century.

"All you need is an idea, stick to it, and be rich beyond your wildest dreams". Simple fixes for all of life's complex problems. Ya, right
Save your money. I'll cut to the chase for you. Drive and determination will be what you need to succeed in anything worthwhile in this world. Stick to it and have a positive outlook. Got it? Good. Now you can spend what you would have on this book on something more worthwhile.
Don't get me wrong, there is some useful stuff to be gleaned here. Yes mental outlook is huge to success. But it's still not a guarantee as the book would have you believe. Too many illogical and unsubstantiated conclusions and just plain wrong inferences and explanations for my taste.

I notice something peculiar. Virtually every one of the reviews on this site pertain not to this edition of "Think and Grow Rich," but, instead, to the "Action Pack" edition, an entirely different book. This is very confusing and could be very misleading.

A Classic, with a terrific Action Guide.......2006-09-09
If you've read any of the reviews, you'll already know how influential this book has been for decades now. I was fortunate enough to first read it when I discovered a 3rd edition original printing at a budget bookstore: what a find!
This edition stands out, as the accompanying "Action Pack" section is a real hands-on guide into how to read the book, how to discover more about yourself, and how to apply what you learn. I carry around in my backpack a set of 3x5 cards with notes and thoughts captured while reading the book. That way I can revisit certain areas "on the fly". You'll probably want to do something similar. At any rate, if you get this edition, make sure you find the first page of the Action Pack section, and follow from there, as it gives you very specific instructions on how to go through the book.
If you only purchased one book in your lifetime on self-development, and it was this book, you'd be in fine shape.

I just finished Think and Grow Rich for the 3rd time. The first time I read it, I was a twenty something and didn't fully grasp it; the next time I read it, I was a forty something, and I reaped great benefits by implementing these principles into my life and career; now, I am almost sixty, and I finally understand the book. Napoleon Hill was clearly correct when he stated that it is very seldom that a young person can grasp the master keys to riches. After completing this book for the third time, I am looking forward to an even more satisfying and productive future... I highly recommend this book to those who want to find the keys to success and riches as well as peace of mind. There should be a college curriculum built around this book. In today's U.S. society, the concepts of self-determination and individualism are dying concepts. This book will teach you how to use your mind to achieve anything that you desire. Everyone desiring success and riches should read this book... Please do not take offense to the masculine references contained in the book. It should be remembered that this book was completed almost 70 years ago and society was "different". It's principles apply to both genders and all races and ethnic groups.

If you asked me to recommend to you the single best book I have ever read, my answer would be a very definite "Think and Grow Rich".
First published in 1937, this is the end product of two decades of research conducted by Napoleon Hill. His research started when Andrew Carnegie (the steel tycoon who was then the richest man on earth) gave him the assignment of organizing a Philosophy of Personal Achievement. Hill, who was a poor journalist, armed with just an introductory letter from Carnegie, set out to interview over five hundred successful people including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, John D. Rockefeller, George Eastman, William Wrigley Jr. and Charles M. Schwab. Hill then revealed the priceless wisdom of his research in the form of the thirteen steps to success (in Think and Grow Rich) and the seventeen principles of success (in courses and lectures he conducted).
The concepts taught by Napoleon Hill transformed my life. Some of these include developing a definite purpose, building a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA), channeling the power of the sub-conscious mind and dealing with adversity. Everything he wrote about or talked about is thought provoking. He was wise, humble and funny. His philosophy is universal; he did not mix it with religion. The riches he referred to were more than money, for the Philosophy of Personal Achievement can be applied to anything in life.
This is a classic, and hence the examples are old (not to be confused with outdated). But they are as relevant today as they were in the early twentieth century. Here is an example from T&GR in the chapter on Desire:
On the morning after the Great Fire of Chicago (1871), a group of merchants on Chicago's State Street went into a conference to decide whether to rebuild their stores or leave Chicago. All but one decided to leave. The merchant who decided to stay pointed a finger to the remains of his store and said "Gentlemen, on that very spot I will build the world's greatest store, no matter how many times it may burn down." His name was Marshall Field and his store still exists, and in Hill's words is "a towering monument to that state of mind known as a burning desire." I lived in Chicago from 2002 through 2004 and worked three blocks away from this impressive store on State Street. Sometimes I would visit it or stand outside it to derive inspiration and be reminded of the power of desire. It is amazing that Hill describes "burning desire" with a story based on the Chicago Fire.
There are thousands of self-help books out in the market and hundreds of self proclaimed "gurus" who have made a living by copying the wisdom in Hill's books. As I went through some of those books I realized that there was not much in them that Hill had not already written about. I recommend quality over quantity. Instead of reading through many books, I recommend that you study the following works of Hill and internalize his wisdom:
1. The Think and Grow Rich Action Pack - I recommend the Action Pack edition (i.e. this book),
2. Napoleon Hill's Keys to Success: The 17 Principles of Personal Achievement - this is an excellent guide to his principles,
3. Your Right To Be Rich [Unabridged] - this consists of 12 hours of live lectures covering the 17 principles, that Hill conducted in Chicago in 1954.
By internalizing, I mean studying in depth - analyzing the ideas, making notes and summaries. I own more CDs by Hill, but I believe that these 3 items make the perfect study plan on the Philosophy of Personal Achievement.
I am greatly indebted to Napoleon Hill. The purpose of my writing this is to spread awareness of his work so that more people can benefit from it. This, I believe is the best way in which Hill would have liked to have been repaid.

This is such a classic. Definately something people should read over and over again. Getting it on mp3 is the best because you can listen to it in the car etc instead of all the normal radio garb that doesn't help you.

This "book on tape" is in Mp3 format. You need a CD Player or CD Boombox that will play Mp3 CD's. The best one is made by Sony. is a classic motivational book.
Written by Napoleon Hill and inspired by Andrew Carnegie.
In 1960, Hill published an abridged version of the book, which for years was the only one generally available.
The text of Think and Grow Rich! is founded on Hill's earlier work, The Law of Success, the result of more than twenty years of research based on Hill's close association with a large number of individuals who managed to achieve great wealth during the course of their lifetimes.
At Carnegie's bidding, Hill studied the characteristics of these great achievers and developed fifteen "laws" intended to be applied by anybody to achieve success. Think and Grow Rich! itself condenses these laws further and provides the reader with 13 principles in the form of a philosophy of personal achievement.
Reflected in these principles is the importance of cultivating a burning desire, faith, autosuggestion and persistence in the attainment of one's goals. Hill also discusses the importance of overcoming many of the most common fears that can adversely affect one's thinking and potential.
Hill in his introduction to the book refers to the "Carnegie Secret", a conception which he reports is the foundation of all success and appears to be the premise of the book.
Hill promises to indirectly describe this "secret" in every chapter, but never state it plainly, believing the use of the secret is only available to those who possess a "readiness" for it, a disposition Hill describes as essential to the concept itself.
Think and Grow Rich has sold consistently since its first publishing.
According to one publisher, the book has now sold more than 60 million copies worldwide.

is a classic motivational book. Written by Napoleon Hill and inspired by Andrew Carnegie, it was published in 1937 at the end of the Great Depression. In 1960, Hill published an abridged version of the book, which for years was the only one generally available. In 2004, Ross Cornwell published Think and Grow Rich!:
The text of Think and Grow Rich! is founded on Hill's earlier work, The Law of Success, the result of more than twenty years of research based on Hill's close association with a large number of individuals who managed to achieve great wealth during the course of their lifetimes.
At Carnegie's bidding, Hill studied the characteristics of these great achievers and developed fifteen "laws" intended to be applied by anybody to achieve success.
Think and Grow Rich! itself condenses these laws further and provides the reader with 13 principles in the form of a philosophy of personal achievement.
Reflected in these principles is the importance of cultivating a burning desire, faith, autosuggestion and persistence in the attainment of one's goals.
Hill also discusses the importance of overcoming many of the most common fears that can adversely affect one's thinking and potential.
Hill in his introduction to the book refers to the "Carnegie Secret", a conception which he reports is the foundation of all success and appears to be the premise of the book.
Hill promises to indirectly describe this "secret" in every chapter, but never state it plainly, believing the use of the secret is only available to those who possess a "readiness" for it, a disposition Hill describes as essential to the concept itself.
Think and Grow Rich has sold consistently since its first publishing. According to one publisher, the book has now sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.
Think and Grow Rich has been on the BusinessWeek Best-Seller List for paperback business books for seventeen consecutive months as of September 2006.
Bad edition of fantastic book.......2006-12-12
This is a fantastic book which is already changing my life, but unfortunately this edition has many typos and errors. This classic work is now in the public domain, meaning anyone can publish it without copyright issues. Unfortunately, some companies seem to take a lazy approach of putting out low-quality editions for a low price. Please avoid this one. Besides simple typos, I've found places where an entire line was apparently left out. (From what I can tell a text was scanned and processed through OCR.)
I'm going to try "Think and Grow Rich!: The Original Version, Restored and Revised" since the description suggests that no changes were made to the text, but an index and footnotes were added.

An excellent book I wish everyone to read.......2006-03-01
This is a unique book, though written to help become financially independent, the principles may be used to help achieve anything you may want to have in life or want to become.
May start with the short CD (about 45 minutes) on this book read by Earl Nightingale, or 2 hour version read by Joe Slattery.
Good. But not the best of Napoleon Hill's CDs.......2006-02-13
This is a good CD. I own it and have listened to it a few times. Earl Nightingale gives a clear summary of Think and Grow Rich. To me, Napoleon Hill is the greatest success author/speaker ever and Think and Grow Rich is the single greatest book I have ever read. However, a part of this particular CD feels like an advertisement and could have been skipped. Also, the editorial reviews and the narrator of this CD talk about 13 principles. This could sometimes be the cause of confusion. Hill organized 13 Steps Toward Riches (in Think and Grow Rich) and 17 Principles of Personal Achievement (in his courses and lectures), also referred to as 17 Keys to Success. This CD talks about the 13 Steps in T&GR.
I would recommend this CD to you only after you have heard the 9 CD set that contains twelve hours worth of live lectures in Napoleon Hill's own voice. The set is called Your Right To Be Rich and was recorded in 1954 in Chicago. In this, Napoleon Hill talks about each of his seventeen Principles of Personal Achievement. The set is amazingly inexpensive and well worth the investment in cost, time and effort.

Preparation is definitely the key!
It becomes important that we know about the rules that will ultimately determine our success. Not just to know their meanings and what they do, but to make these principles a part of us - a habit that will lead us to do the right thing automatically, regardless of the circumstances. As Kimbro said, "it is our job as Black Americans to disentangle the myths, misconceptions, and half - truths that clouds the judgments of our society".
All, regardless of race or class or economic status, are entitled to a fair chance and to the tools for developing their individual powers of mind and spirit to the utmost. This promise means that all children by virtue of their own efforts, competently guided, can hope to attain the mature and informed judgment needed to secure gainful employment, and to manage their own lives, thereby serving not only their own interests but also the progress of society itself. Also noted by Kimbro, "Blacks as a whole have moved from a position of utter destitution - in terms of wealth, education, and human rights - to a place alongside their ethnic counterparts".
Black males, particularly, have edged precariously close to becoming an endangered species. There are more Black males in prison and correctional facilities than on college campuses. Functional illiteracy among minority youth may run as high as 40 percent.
The search for solutions to our educational problems must also include a commitment to life-long learning. Learning is the indispensable investment required for success but without life-long learning, one's skills will become rapidly dated.
This would also reverse the current declining trend--a trend that stems more from weakness of purpose, confusion of vision, under use of talent, and lack of leadership, than from conditions beyond our control. We as Black Americans need to realize that we do not simply exist, we need to always realize what our life will be, and what we will become in the next moment.
I took liberty to expand upon the following:
THE PRESIDENT'S NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION (During Reagan era, still suitable today):
The report called for greater federal support of education and included the claim that the nation was threatened by "a rising tide of mediocrity". A Nation at Risk is a reform based on the development of standards-based curricula. The focus is on outcomes of education in relation to standards of achievement, the idea being that student achievement and instructional programs were likely to improve.
One of the most quoted portions of this report came from the introduction just after the "Rising Tide" remark. It said: "If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war. As it stands, we have allowed this to happen to ourselves. We have even squandered the gains in student achievement made in the wake of the Sputnik challenge. Moreover, we have dismantled essential support systems, which helped make those gains possible. We have, in effect, been committing an act of unthinking, unilateral educational disarmament".
The following five recommendations were made by the report:

Recommended that the graduation requirements for all students be raised to include 4 years of English, 3 years of mathematics, 3 years of science, 3 years of social studies, 1 semester of computer science, and for college bound students 2 years of foreign language.
Standards and Expectations
Schools should expect better academic performance and behavior from students and universities should strengthen admissions requirements.
Time
More time should be spent on the new required courses by being more efficient and by lengthening the school day and year.
Teaching
A series of recommendations that focused around teachers being better prepared.
Leadership and Fiscal Support
A call to citizens to hold educational leaders responsible be willing to provide the fiscal resources needed to implement the outlined reforms.
Using available statistics, Black America continue to take for granted the enormous and victorious battles won by the Civil Rights movement. "If there is one thing that we have won and accomplished, it is our moral right to exist".
Racism and discrimination should never be an excuse for your lack of development, but real creative ability-ability to live largely in a world based on ones own inner resources, finding one's true self, overcoming ignorance, and always remaining receptive and teachable should be never ending endeavors.
Slavery in America has left a scar on the Black family structure where as slave master would separate parents from children, husband and wife from each other is still visible today with children being born into single parent households or children being separated from parents. This cycle has not ceased but instead has taken new forms.
Kimbro's writing style is multi- dimensional and stimulating to the imagination. It spirals you into the seams of the book. In the section dealing with the " Law of Compensation" there are many lessons to be learned by all ethnicities.
Black people have to take the opportunity and the responsibility by portraying themselves differently. As Kimbro mentioned, your thoughts are the steering mechanism of your life. "Faith only enters the mind that has been properly prepared for it. Although I must add, your heart and your guts usually have a say so with what you think or decide too.
Quoting Thurgood Marshall, " Blacks must earn their way to higher achievement". In other words, through perseverance, hardwork and desire.
As John H. Johnson stated, "Black people have the power to make it in this society".
As George Washington Carver stated, "We must rid ourselves of the idea that there's a short - cut to achievement".
Black America has to realize that whatever God has allowed to be taken away from it temporarily he has suredly replaced it with something far greater. A glance at history will confirm that. Although many individual Black Americans in this society continue to adorn themselves with the albatross of ignorance around their neck. Black people need to reconstruct the perspective lens of White America.
Although I thought, Kimbro did not use fair judgment by not choosing Reginald Lewis (TLC Beatrice) as a role model in his book due to Lewis's butting heads with John Johnson of Johnson Publications. In my judgment, if Kimbro knew about this spat he should have left Johnson out of the book.
Although this book is directed at the African-American community, the principles found within are color blind. Dr. Kimbro creates a step-by-step approach for achieving success. There is enough in the book that merit's a periodical re-read.

Great book. I would recommend this book to anyone who want to be successful in their respective field.

I have not purchased the original think and grow rich yet..but this book is excellent and inspiring. Everyone can read this book. The book is written from the black perspective in that the author uses famous/rich black people as examples thought out the book. I especially love the inspirational quotes. The main theme is reinforced constantly you are what you think. Think your poor and never can get better. then you'll stay poor. Poor but you know that you can do better... then you'll succeed. The author emphasizes that in this land of opportunity (USA) that anyone can succeed. You may experience bumps achieving your dream but perseverance and positive thinking goes along way. A must read for all african-americans.

When someone overcome obstacles that is always a great to read. Many self help books have that and some stories are better than others. Dennis Kimbro has managed to find some inspirational stories. However, it has that new age feel in some parts of the book. Metaphysics is theory and many books speak of it as fact. Speculation cannot make you a better person. If you want to read the stories then get the book. If you want to change your life then don't get it for practical advice.
