A phenomenon when first published in 1972, the Inner Game was a real revelation. Instead of serving up technique, it concentrated on the fact that, as Gallwey wrote, "Every game is composed of two parts, an outer game and an inner game." The former is played against opponents, and is filled with lots of contradictory advice; the latter is played not against, but within the mind of the player, and its principal obstacles are self-doubt and anxiety. Gallwey's revolutionary thinking, built on a foundation of Zen thinking and humanistic psychology, was really a primer on how to get out of your own way to let your best game emerge. It was sports psychology before the two words were pressed against each other and codified into an accepted discipline.
The new edition of this remarkable work--Billie Jean King called the original her tennis bible--refines Gallwey's theories on concentration, gamesmanship, breaking bad habits, learning to trust yourself on the court, and awareness. "No matter what a person's complaint when he has a lesson with me, I have found the most beneficial first step," he stressed, "is to encourage him to see and feel what he is doing--that is, to increase his awareness of what actually is."
There are aspects of psychobabble and mysticism to be found here, sure, but Gallwey instructs as much by anecdote as anything else, and time has ultimately proved him a guru. What seemed radical in the early '70s is now accepted ammunition for the canon; the right mental approach is every bit as important as a good backhand. The Inner Game of Tennis still does much to keep that idea in play. --Jeff Silverman

Loren Cordain, Ph.D., follows his success of The Paleo Diet with the first book ever to detail the exercise-enhancing effects of a diet similar to that of our Stone Age ancestors When The Paleo Diet was published, advocating a return to the diet of our ancestors (high protein, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables), the book received brilliant reviews from the medical and nutritional communities. Jennie Brand-Miller, coauthor of the bestselling Glucose Revolution, called it 'without a doubt the most nutritious diet on the planet.' Doctors Michael and Mary Dan Eades, authors of Protein Power, said, 'We can't recommend The Paleo Diet highly enough.'
Customer Reviews:
Cordain sold out his diet to Joe Friel.......2007-08-27
Two stars for the Paleo Diet but Zero stars for the "modifications."
I was severely disappointed with this book. I hoped that an athlete would adopt the diet and adapt his training to the demands of the sound science that Dr. Cordain authored with his Paleo Diet. Instead, we have an athlete who has basically adapted the Paleo Diet to the high carbohydrate nonsense that permeates the "endurance world", which leads to good results, but bad health. How many of our great athletes have to continue sacrificing their long-term health for short term goals?
Recovery is not a good enough reason to "adapt" and modify the diet. The goal of training is to race, not more training. I don't think enough athletes understand that. There is a large section in this book about overtraining, but the authors "overcome" this seeming limitation ironically with the very thing that the Paleo Diet attempts to cure us from - - a misplaced reliance on excessive glucose which is responsible for the majority of the maladies that currently afflict us.
"Periodization" is also a problem. I'll leave you this quote by Olympian Gordon Pirie which accurately details the issue:
"Another popular aspect of training which I think is very dangerous is that known as "periodization" - that is, breaking down the training year into various "phases", each of which is divorced from the others. Thus, the beginning of the year may be devoted to a slow distance "build-up", the second portion of the year devoted to hill training, a third part devoted to interval work and then speed training, and finally (though most of these runners never get this far) a racing season undertaken. The difficulty with training in this manner is that you go along quite well with one aspect of training (e.g. long distance running), and then suddenly, on a certain day, "Bang!". You start hill-bounding, or speed-training, or something new, and the body simply is not ready for the change, and invariably, year in and year out, you are more often than not injured. The body should be trained in all aspects of running, all of the time. Only the emphasis should change as you progress through the year; no aspect of training should be entirely given up for any significant length of time. The balance between different types of training (distance running, intervals, hill running and speed training) should be adjusted as the year progresses" Pirie, "Running Fast and Injury Free", Page 86.
This balance can be achieved with adequate rest. When an athlete gives up his dependance on sugar, he will find that he has much more strength and steady energy reserves. Sure, you don't recover as quickly, but this is an indication that training is too hard, and one needs to adjust this training in order to successfully make it to the starting line. The science by Phinney and others clearly demonstrates that athletes, when given sufficient time to adapt to fat burning, were able to repeat their athletic performance. Frequency was a problem, but again, the goal of training is to race, not more training.
I'm disappointed that Dr. Cordain could not find an athlete willing to test his theories with sound and intelligent training, rather than the usual carb-load glucose-laden mess we've been stuck with. There are many low carb runners and cyclists out there who address the issues covered in this book far more intelligently and in a way that does not compromise their long term health as this approach potentially does.
"A great diet and exercise book not just for paleolithic.......2007-08-06
Highly informative for all athletes and people wanting to exercise on a regular basis.
Basically it teaches you what, when and how to eat your food so that you get the maximun performance. It also has specific advice on fluids. If you are planning to do regular execise, this is a highly recommended book, even if you are not planning to follow the paleo diet strictly.
Wow! Opened my eyes........2007-07-12
This book is packed with some very useful information. I would have given it five stars, but I don't have the knowledge to thoroughly evaluate all the statements made in this book and I feel like there are probably some important points that are being left out. Nonetheless, it has made me aware of some very important and little understood issues relating to performance and diet. As a result of reading this book, I am much better informed and I will definitely be better able to understand additional material relating to nutrition and health.
I have read other books by Joe Friel, and I find that the incorporation of performance related principles from his other books is consistent and very helpful.
Great athlete guide to nutrition.......2007-05-24
This book has really helped me in my quest for iron distance triathlons. The times to eat and the types of foods are very helpful for recovery from exercise. Joe Friel's scientific approach to nutrition is extremely well informed. I have used his techniques and had great results. I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants to increase their fitness level.
A Key Nutrition Resource.......2007-04-09
These nutritional strategies will help you fuel your body to keep it going longer as you work to build up your endurance.

Highly Recommended!.......2001-09-18
Kimball Fisher and Mareen Duncan Fisher document the special skills needed for the new but increasingly common task of managing far-flung work groups. The approaches that they examine are becoming increasingly essential for all managers. Although they explore relevant technologies carefully, their human relations advice is probably more important. The Fishers emphasize the interpersonal and leadership skills that a manager needs to head a virtual team. If you read this book cover to cover, it can seem repetitive, since many of the rules and tips offered in one area overlap with those in other areas. However, the book is designed to allow you to review specific management challenges and technologies, and to ignore areas that are irrelevant to your situation. We [...] recommend this clear, practical work to anyone who leads virtual teams and to the telecommuters and freelance workers who report to them.
Ideas on Distance Management.......2001-07-18

let me think..............2005-02-19
Oh yea, that's right. There is no need to think when you're up at the plate. The main thing is to relax and trust your trained body motions/strengths. This book separates the men from the boys. It helps skilled athletes develop to their full potential. In fact, it can even change the way you live your life. Great book for those hot summer nights.
Superb book for just about anyone.......2004-05-06
I bought this book because I am a baseball fan and my sons play ball as well. I am also an experienced musician who played professionally for some years. I found the book to be a "must read" for ANY performer (athlete, musician, dancer, etc) and a great book for anyone seeking personal success in any pursuit. If you like The Inner Game of Music, or A Soprano On Her Head, you need to get this book.
Years of Application.......2002-11-15
I read this book as a freshman in college while playing intercollegiate baseball. I can honestly say that the things I learned and applied to my life as a ballplayer have stuck with me over the years. I have since gone on to a top-rated graduate school and a great job. I learned to formulate goals, think positively, and maintain focus and intensity though practicing what this book describes. If you like baseball, but don't play, this book is great as you apply it's principles as I have done over the years. If you do play, it will help you focus on getting the most out of your abilities.

excellent product.......2007-02-10
This meditation and guided imagery session is extremely helpful for reducing anxiety and particularly performance anxiety. True to its title, it also helps to improve self-confidence. I find it useful to listen at night, as I am falling asleep. Just as Belleruth suggests, I find the thoughts repeating in my mind as I go through my day, calming and encouraging me. I have several of Belleruth's products (e.g., Grief, and Wellness) and I highly recommend all of them.
Effective self-help CD.......2006-06-26
I have found this CD to improve my overall daily state of mind. I find that I am less stressed on a daily basis and my ability to make quick and reliable decisions has also improved. Simply put; I feel more serene.
Calmly re-iterating everything I wanted to feel........2006-01-18
Naparstek did an amazing job when she created this CD. Not just with the words she chose but also with the music. By listening to the CD, you are meditating upon words that are enhanced with the music. I believe this gives the CD a more powerful impact. I never really thought about listenting to a motivational CD. I really didn't think I needed it. But i'm very glad that I took a friend's advice because this CD has really helped me with my self-confidence. and not just with that but also I feel that i can focus better. I also haven't felt any anxiety since i started to listen to it. I started off listening to it every night before I went to bed. Now i probably just listen to it once a week. It's a great CD I hope you try it!

Where you start reading this book will probably say a lot about your current station in life. New parents will probably skip right to chapter 12 and the section subtitled "Tips for Exhausted Parents of Newborns, Infants, and Children." Drowsy office workers might go for chapter 9, which explores the subject of midday naps (which may reduce stress and the risk of heart disease). Other chapters look at traveling (driving, jet lag), shift work, and insomnia and other sleep disorders. Dr. James Maas has spent 34 years lecturing to drowsy psychology undergraduates at Cornell University, and knows how to hold an audience--even when the subject is sleep, and even when the conclusion is that most of us don't get enough of it. This is a fascinating book; you'll want to take it in slowly and then sleep on it.
Book Description
Do your eyelids feel heavy during afternoon meetings? Do you sleep extra hours on weekend mornings? Do you use caffeine to stay alert? An alarm to get out of bed?

In Power Sleep, you'll find:

An important and practical book, Power Sleep will help you get the sleep you need to improve your mental and physical well-being quickly and dramatically and to become a peak performer.

Must Read!.......2007-09-08
Great book - really opens your eyes to the power of a good night's sleep!
Good review and guide for sleep.......2007-06-01
I don't know why, but even though I've read different ways to 'get more sleep', etc., I still have trouble with it. My problem is that I try to cram in 'just one more thing' or get sucked into a hobby or the computer, movie, project, etc. and stay up too late. This book was interesting as it talked about sleep research as well as the real dangers of being sleep deprived (beyond just feeling wasted).
I understand the importance of keeping a similar sleep-wake cycle every day, and I struggle there because I have to get up at 5:30 a.m. on work days. Who wants to get up at 5:30 on your day off?? I have been filling out the sleep logs (I re-typed the chart in the book into a MS-Word document) and it's hard seeing bedtimes and sleep durations all over the place. Maybe my circadian rhythms are wired to a little later wake times.
Overall, though, through prayer and persistence I'm working to change my bad sleep habits a bit at a time. The recommendations and the 'Golden Rules of Sleep' are good to review often to help cement new GOOD habits. My favorite quote (and a good reminder) in the book is: "when you start treating sleep as a NECESSITY, not a luxury, your whole life will change." I am looking forward to the change.
Why Your Body Needs 8 Hours Sleep Every Night.......2007-01-30
This book belongs in every home library. It is simply the best book on sleep I've ever read. Easy to read, and backed with plenty of research. Has a terrific and useful sleep log. I used to believe all those corporate CEOs and "top performers" who said they could get by just fine on 4-6 hours' sleep at night. With employer expectations of workdays lasting 10-14+ hours, I felt I had no choice but to try to emulate them if I wanted to keep my job, let alone get ahead. I used to think that because I fell asleep within 60 seconds every night (a sure sign of sleep deprivation, as I now know) my body was functioning very efficiently. I yawned all day long, my eyes closed sometimes at my desk or behind the wheel, I was chronically depressed and even suicidal, I seemed to be losing my memory, I had chronic headaches, trying to get up each morning was like trying to rouse myself from a coma, and my general health was deteriorating, which I attributed to the natural aging process. I lived like this for decades. During a period of unemployment, I read Dr. Maas' book about why the body needs adequate sleep and what happens to it when it doesn't get enough, followed his advice, and found to my astonishment that 8 hours' sleep every night cured all of my problems! I NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE! I will NEVER go back to living a life of chronic sleep deprivation. My depression has been replaced with joy, I fall asleep in 10 minutes, not 60 seconds, my memory has recovered, my heart palpitations are gone, my headaches are gone, my energy is enough to last all day -- without coffee, I no longer yawn, my eyes don't close on me, and I get out of bed with energy and cheer. Do yourself a favor and get this book. Then tell your boss you're not staying past 7PM anymore because you have to go home and get your sleep!
sleep review.......2007-01-11
I think that this book will change people lives. Its a good book. A bit alarmist at time but i feel that just to keep the americans Interested. Over all I find that the content is very good but a little complicated for the ordinary reader. However I feel its is a very important book and people would benifit it from it greatly.
Sleep Success.......2006-11-28
I am a student in Professor Maas's Psych 101 course at Cornell University. Power Sleep is required for the course (Professor Maas does not make a profit on sales to Cornell students). I found this book extremely helpful. Though I've always thought that I was knowledgeable about the subtleties of sleep, I found that I was not upon reading this book. I've been plagued with illness and found myself sluggish for years. I was always forced out of bed after 8 hours by my mother, concerned that I get enough out of each day. Little did I know that I was trying to thrive at a huge sleep deficit. Since following Professor Maas's Power Sleep advice, my grades have improved in addition to my ability to think clearly throughout the day. I would recommend this book to anyone who has any type of sleeping problems, or even those who think that they are performing at their peaks!

Book Description
A comprehensive, take-anywhere exercise program designed to improve men's strength, flexibility, balance, and posture
Have years of office work wreaked havoc on your posture? Could your tennis or golf game use a boost? Do you appear or feel older than your age? Or do you carry yourself in a manner that expresses strength, power, and peak performance to everyone around you?
In recent years, Pilates has become a popular exercise program, especially among women. Many books on the subject show lithe female bodies stretched across their covers. Top Pilates instructor Daniel Lyon Jr. aims to break the preconception that Pilates only benefits and appeals to women. "This couldn't be further from the truth," he asserts. "Joseph Pilates was a cigar-smoking boxer, acrobat, and gymnast, and he developed his exercise program from that background for men first." Likewise, Lyon designed this book specifically with men in mind, as the number of male Pilates practitioners -- among them professional athletes, actors, businessmen, and other high-profile personalities -- has rocketed to about three million and continues to grow.
For athletes, working stiffs, and men recovering from injuries, Lyon offers the first comprehensive exercise program of its kind. He walks you through forty "traditional mat" exercises and more than sixty "reformer on the mat" exercises -- each one brilliantly illustrated -- in an inspiring self-guided program that adapts to all experience levels and requires nothing more than floor space, an exercise mat, and the desire to look and feel your best. Using the Pilates method of engaging the strongest parts of the body, or the "powerhouse" (Joseph Pilates's term for the abdominals, hips, lower back muscles, and buttocks), and integrating all other body parts from this core, Lyon's program targets trouble spots for men and helps them achieve strong, lean, masculine physiques.
The Complete Book of Pilates for Men will deliver quick and long-term results to any man who seeks optimal fitness and a competitive edge in all aspects of his life.

Marvellous! Recommended........2007-09-20
When it comes to "self study" guides for pilates, yoga, etc. it seems to me you've got to find the book or DVD that works best for you.
With yoga my favorite guide of all time is Richard Hittleman's 28 DAY YOGA EXERCISE. The simple, figure-against-black photographs and straight-forward descriptions are exactly what I needed to learn (decades ago now--my mother gave me my first copy!). For busy folks Hittleman provides easy-to-follow routines.
Having bought several pilates books and a DVD, none of which did it for me, I had stopped looking for a pilates book. Then I chanced to see PILATES FOR MEN. 10 minutes later I bought it.
Like Hittleman's approach it's the accessibility and ease-of-use that does it for me. The pencil drawings are excellent, with the required movements easy to see. The text is straight-forward. And the exercises are presented in the order you might use them in. This is just what I needed given the way I process "kinesthetic instructions on the page" and a fairly busy life.
The trick is to get a copy of this book in your hands and get a sense of how you might use it learning pilates or brushing up and how it might serve you in developing a plan to squeeze into your life.
Personally, I'd say this is a classic. But who knows and only time will tell.
Dr. Kirtland C Peterson
Amazingly Easy Way to Learn Pilates.......2007-09-07
When I purchased this book I was quite skeptical. After all Pilates seemed fairly complex and I thought it would be impossible to learn correct body position and execution without an instructor right there to correct me. Daniel Lyon has found a way to explain the body positioning and execution of the exercises in simple language that makes it so easy to understand that I had complete confidence in performing each of the moves.
I highly recommend this book. After several weeks, my stiff neck and lower back are gone and I feel great!
Best excercise book I've ever used........2007-03-28
This book is great. In a matter of a week or two you will feel the results in your entire core, & lower pelvic regions where your legs connect. If you go advanced you'll get the full body workout. The excercises are not difficult to figure out. The book is written perfectly and the illustrations are dead on. I like the fact that all of the excercises are easy on your joints, or at least can be modified to be that way. This guy is a good teacher, and his book is perfect.
Ultimate workout!.......2007-01-04
If followed concientiously will produce marked inprovements in every aspect of one's physical and mental condition. Highly recommended for Men, not for children.
Excellent results.......2006-08-23
I play tennis and social dance for physical activity. The exercises in this book are excellent. I feel like a new man. You build strenght at your core and can feel the results very quickly
