4 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-09-29

Just getting into the book selling biz. I have been going through cancer and now need a job where I can tailor my hours around all of my doctor's appointments. I like both this book and the Stephen Windwalker books. Very good information without alot of extraneous stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-25

This a great book to help those interested in selling books online. It is very bold of Mr. Weber to enpower the competition. But it is a very smart book that will help those motivated to help themselves. I recommend it to all interested in getting online selling books.

4 out of 5 stars The Home-Based Book Store.......2007-09-17

Very good book for the person who is contemplating entering this type of business. Seemed to cover most of the bases. If he didn't and I do actually go into business, I guess I'll find out pretty quickly. But, overall, since I've read a few other books dealing with this topic, I feel the author covered the subject matter well and I would recommend the book to others.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-08-27

This is a fantastic book chock full of information. I've already started using some of his suggestions and am looking forward to having my own online used book store.

We are established home-based booksellers. When my husband bought this book I thought it would be to basic for us but I was pleasantly surprised. It was full of great and useful information. It would be a tremendous book to have BEFORE you set up your business. I think this would be helpful for anyone at any level that is selling books on the internet.

Book Description

"Daylle Deanna Schwartz has conveniently packaged all you need to know to start your own record label in a very reader-friendly new edition. What took me over ten years to learn the hard way has been easily explained in Start & Run Your Own Record Label. If you're thinking about competing in the often-treacherous world of independent record labels, arm yourself with this book." - RYAN KUPER, Redemption Records

In its first edition, Start and Run Your Own Record Label was an authoritative resource for anyone who ever dreamt of building their own record business from the ground up. Comprehensive, informative, practical, and accessible, the book covered every aspect of setting up, owning, and operating a record label.

Since the publication of that edition, the music industry has witnessed a new era for independent record labels. While not profoundly different, new technology has made it easier and more affordable for practically anyone to record their own music at home and to sell it online and at performances. As a result, increasingly more musicians are finding it easier to achieve their musical goals.

In the Updated and Expanded edition, new chapters are included to address such issues as resources for the business end of running a record label, getting exposure, exploring alternative markets for all genres of music, and maximizing the use of the Internet. In addition, all chapters are rewritten and more interviews with cutting edge experts on today's music market have been added.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The story of my brother's life.......2007-09-11

I actually purchased this book for my brother who has an underground record label, going on about 5 years (?). He said it's absolutely amazing and that he can relate to most of the things that are covered. It has a lot of great suggestions and views on running a pre-existing record label and even starting one from scratch. He has learned a lot of legal issues too that he's taken care of and this is the only book I ever recall seeing him open! And he read it in 2 days!

4 out of 5 stars Getting The Basics Down.......2007-08-07

I found this book to be an excellent resource just coming into the music business. It teaches a lot of the basic concepts in starting and running a record label. The book and specifically, the music publishing deals and distribution information, helped me to get a better understanding of how the business works. I would have liked to see a little more detailed information on signing an artist, but that maybe a little too much for a basic book. Good shelf keeper

3 out of 5 stars I was hoping for more.......2007-07-26

If you know absolutley nothing about the music business and have never read a book about it, this is a good starting book. I was hoping for more figures though. There's not enough step by step diagnosis. It's more of a review of the different aspects of label promotion, signing, etc...

5 out of 5 stars An inspiration to Dave Roberge, founder of Everfine Records.......2007-06-01

After studying this one, I learned that Dave Roberge, manager of O.A.R. & founder of Everfine Records, found this book to be useful to him when he started his indie, which became enormously successful.

At times, Dayelle writes about self-evident common sense but, it's still a 5 star book.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good..........2007-05-18

I read it and would love to start my own label, but unfortunately, I won't be doing it anytime soon. Good advice, though.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource!.......2007-09-23

While I was a bit skeptical about making such a purchase, thinking it was only going to be a reiteration of common sense, this book totally surprised me. It contains tips on just about anything a person considering starting their own business might wonder about and need to know from what type of name to use, to how to organize the business legally to how to best design business cards. I'm extremely impressed!

This is a great buy!

5 out of 5 stars 1 + 1 Can equal 5.......2007-06-29

If you are considering starting your own business, you probably already know that there is great opportunity for those who manage lay the proper ground work. Rieva has done an excellent job with this book. However, as one of my developer clients once said "Sometimes the best way to make money building a new building is to start with a great deal on an old building. Buy Rieva's Book. Do your homework. Look to see if you can reduce your start up cost with a well designed acquisition. And don't rule out getting a great deal on a business (or some of its assets) from a Chapter 11. Get a copy of Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers.

5 out of 5 stars It helping a novice!.......2007-06-27

Now I've taken a few business courses in college (accounting 101, Micro and Macro Economics, Statistics, etc), but I knew that starting a business would take some extra knowledge.

This book was an excellent reference for me. My particular business didn't fit the normal idea of a business, but the book still helped me explore both the direction that I wanted to go and the direction I wasn't going; just to make sure that I considered what I was doing in an objective manner.

I really appreciated this book in starting up my business, and it will surely get used as my business grows.

I liked how many different chapters there were, because it helped me to easily find answers to my questions.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough, through and through........2007-05-19

This book is really thorough. I started my quest for information with the Dummies Retail Business Kit. That book was also really helpful, and a great introduction. I found Start Your Own Business to be a lot more informative and helpful than the Business Kit book, but I worry that if I had started with it, I would have been initially overwhelmed. There is a LOT of information. Unfortunately I still need more information that is specifically geared to the retail business, as this book is more broad. But VERY helpful.

Very informative. It was a quick read, and gave lots of ideas for places to go for more information. Some of the links listed in the book are out of date, but considering how fast information changes on the web, I'm not surprised. A much better value than many of the other consultant books out there, and an excellent starting point for anyone considering this field.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better. . ........2007-07-02

This book does have a lot of general information about the event planning industry. It also give the reader a lot of information from industry heavy hitters. This book is unfornately not for a person who is familiar with or has worked in the industry and are looking to branch out on their own. It is also not a strong suit for those interested in staying more on the social side of event planning. Most of the resources and examples (contracts etc.) are geared to those who are planning large scale events where the customer will be giving you all the money to spend as needed. Overall the authors did their best to tackle such a lofty subject in so few pages. I just don't think they were as sucessful as they could have been.

3 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-04-10

Informative simply written and easy to understand for the beginner. Has tips, forms and checklists.

1 out of 5 stars Editing Problems.......2007-04-07

This book is very informative, but some of the information boxes are missing the wording. It cuts off some of the words, so the information is incomplete and makes it hard to follow what is going on.

I want to know who to contact in order to get a better edited copy of this book. I have almost completed reading it, but I would have liked to have received a correctly edited copy of the book that I paid for.

Thank you for listening.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-03-25

This book was very helpful to me as someone who really doesn't have any event planning training, but is looking to start. It had light humorous moments which made it more enjoyable to read. I also loved the side comments. All in all, I would say anyone looking to work in this field should read this book. It will come in very handy and you can read it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Reading, Packed with Information.......2006-02-24

With so many business startup books and specialty books in this industry, I found this book to be informative, easy to read and packed with resources. I would say start here and check the back for references and referrals.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Informative, hard to plod through in places.......2005-03-02

The book has a lot of useful information about setting up and running small corporations.

5 out of 5 stars Never Judge a Book by its Cover.......2005-01-23

This book provides vital information not usually covered in most self-publishing books and is a solid resource guide. Another confirmation that you need to read many books on your subject to familiarize yourself with the business. Areas such as how to protect your inventory by filing a UCC in the state the distributor is based, understanding the ins and outs of how distributors work, how to establish discounts and payment schedules that protect your financial structure, how to properly set-up your Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, taxes, LLC's, S Corporations, etc. Peter Hupalo's only weak area is his cover design. Anyone this intelligent should know their strengths and weakness's, and graphic design/layout is his. His book deserves better and would appeal to more buyers if it was redesigned.

3 out of 5 stars Focus.......2004-12-30

I found the book focused more on C Corporations. A few of the chapters did focus on S Corps and it answered a lot of questions I had, and also raised more questions in the process. I found it did not go into real detail on S Corp deductions, or how to handle tax liability for an owner/employee.

5 out of 5 stars The Book Saved Me Money.......2004-11-25

This book is, to me, misnamed. It's really about how taxes are collected on various types of business structures. It discusses the various business organizations such as sole proprietorships, limited liability companies (LLCs), and corporations. Under corporations both C and S corporations are covered. (I can't think of a catchy title to say that, so I guess the book can stay named as it is.)

Most of the book is on the S corporation. This makes sense as most small business should probably be S corporations. The small business isn't going to attract large numbers of investors. By shifting the income of the business to an S you can often save several thousand dollars in taxes by shifting between salary and dividends or what the IRS calls earned income and passive income.

When I got the book I had a couple of questions in mind like "how much salary should I pay myself." These questions aren't answered in most "how to incorporate" type books. What I wanted was two answers, what does the law say, and what are the real rules. I got both answers quickly and easily.

For me, the information I wanted was covered in about 10% of the book, the rest of the material I either knew or didn't care about. That 10% that I needed saved me many, many times the cost of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it with pre-tax dollars!.......2003-08-24

This is a great read for anybody considering incorporation or investing in an existing business. The author employs dozens of examples to illustrate the key decisions involved in choosing a business structure and how to manage it. Potential downside is given equal weight with potential savings, and often neglected issues affecting minority shareholders like "dilution" and "freeze out" are given a fair hearing.

The section on pre-tax vs. post tax purchases was particularly well illustrated. Find out why a $0.37 stamp may cost you $0.25 when you buy it through your business and $0.56 when you steal it from your personal stationary drawer. The author's conservative approach to accounting was refreshing in a world of books that profess to tell you how to beat the IRS. The strategies for maximizing shareholder income in this book are based on solid, legitimate planning.

The only fault I found with the book is that the number of examples led the author to be a little too imaginative with made-up business names. However, that wasn't enough to stop me from reading it from cover to cover in less than 24 hours.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Book if You are a Budding Teenage Entrepreneur.......2006-06-30

Among the numerous books for starting your own business out in the marketplace, this one is pretty good for the right audience; that is, those who do not know the first thing about starting a business. While there is certainly a need for such books, I did not find it useful for me though. This book might make it onto the reading list for a high school business class, but beyond that I cannot see much value. But still, there are worse introductory books for entrepreneurs than this one. I'm still trying to find one that really delivers.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Critical Read .......2006-05-07

This book is entertaining only because it shows different viewpoints. But you won't really learn anything from the book, in terms of real entrepreneurial skills or knowledge. I would say it might be a book to read if you were going to buy 20 others but it certainly is by no means a critical read. It's more like something you would read wihile on a plane.

"The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" (Stathis) is the best book I have found on the topic. If you want to know absolutely everything about the venture capital industry and how to develo the skills and knowledge that successful high-tech entrepreneurs need, get The Startup Company Bible.

3 out of 5 stars A very interesting book.......2006-04-29

When I bought this book I expected to be told a lot and in essence I have but I feel that there is more that the author could have said.
On the whole, I like the book. But I'd also like to recommend that readers pick up a copy of Untapped Wealth Discovered written by Jeff N Marquis and Kerry J Harrison.
This book is refreshing with fresh ideas and two fresh faced authors. It's amust read especially for women.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Secondary Reading For Those Thinking About Or Planning To Start A Business Venture.......2005-12-14

You should definitely go to the largest public library in your area and review the numerous business startup books that are available. If you feel a particular book is worth re-reading or to keep as a future reference, you should buy the latest edition of such a book. (Use the book's ISBN number to search online for the newest edition that is currently available.)

What you will get from this book:

This book will offer you inspirational stories divided into appropriate sections such as planning, funding, marketing and advertising. These are short stories of successful business owners interviewed or researched by the author, which consists of either: what the owners did right, what the owners did wrong, the challenges they had faced, and examples of how they would of had done something differently if given the chance to.

What you will not get from this book:

If you feel that, by reading stories of successful people will kick-start your creative engine, then spend the small amount that it costs to own this book. However, if you want information for "detailed" instructions on how to acquire loans and fundings, then this book will not help you.

With the handful of business startup books that I had borrowed and purchased, most of them do not offer any more information other than the basic explaination of places to request loans from. (Examples of funding resources are the SBA-Small Business Administration, Banks, Angel Investors, and Venture Capital Firms)

I recommend borrowing a copy of SBA Loans: A Step-By-Step Guide. - By Patrick D. O'Hara
ISBN # 0-471-23347-1

5 out of 5 stars Good Wisdom for Aspiring Entrepreneurs.......2005-07-16

As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, there are some great "nuggets" of information in this book. And the value of those nuggets to the reader will depend on how much the reader already knows. For someone just getting started, this book provides a great way to learn from others.

There simply aren't enough business books on the market with real-world advice. And when you compile the advice of many people, different readers will find different parts useful. I read this book several years ago and thought it was a great primer. Too many people jump into business ownership with their eyes closed. If you talk to successful business owners, very few will tell you that they got where they are by figuring it out as they went along. You need mentors and advice from people who have been down the path before you.

This is not a book for someone who has been in business for awhile, however I highly recommend it for anyone who is getting started. The more prepared you are to start a business, the more likely your chances of success. This book is worth your time and could save you from making some mistakes in the process.

2 out of 5 stars not great.......2007-05-17

The estimate for an automatic wash was not accurate. I checked with a national company and the price was double what the book listed, also the book had typos (very unprofessional).

5 out of 5 stars Good basic information.......2007-01-12

This book was just what I was hoping it would be. It covered all the basics in helping me decide if a car wash was the type of business I wanted to pursue including great information to help in writing the business plan.

5 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-01-04

This book had a ton of information on starting a car wash. It elaborated in seperate chapters the information for each type of car wash. It contains websites, groups, and magazines that you can subscribe to to help in starting your business. I would recommend to anyone interested in starting a car wash.

4 out of 5 stars Get a clear picture.......2006-02-27

Prior to reading this book, I had visions of grandeur. I envisioned cars rolling in, dirt being washed away, and my bank account growing exponentially. After reading this book, I know these things can still happen but they require much more work than I expected. This book is very helpful in informing you about what is required of you to open a car wash. Then you can make a better evaluation before you jump into something and regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Car wash book rocks!.......2005-08-21

This book is just awesome. A must read for car and business lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Medical Claims and Transcription.......2007-01-22

The book arrived in excellent condition and in the time it was promised.
I would order from this seller again.

3 out of 5 stars Vague on Medical Claims Billing/Transcription, but valuable for starting a business in general........2006-09-08

After much anticipation, I received my Start Your Own Medical Claims and Transcription Business book; however, I was sort of disappointed. The aspects of starting a business was outlined beautifully, but what this book was missing was the information that was stated on the title. There are little references throughout the book that go into some detail about medical claims and transcription, but failed to go into any major detail. The money that I spent was not a total loss, there were some very good points in the book. For the money, it is worth it, but do not think that after reading it that you will be ready to quit your day job and start your own.

5 out of 5 stars On my way to self employment.......2006-02-25

This book was just the thing I needed. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who is considering a business venture of their own. It was so helpful.

It is bulleted for you to be able to do a step by step so that you dont get lost or confused when starting your business. It is informative, uplifting, it motivated me, it gave me the incentive and it gave me the courage to know I could do it.

So far Im moving forward and by summer will be employed for ME! MYSELF! and I!

I have dreamed of being a business owner and yes it is happening. Not all the credit goes to the book because you have to have the will and the desire to go after this and you have to really want it, but the book has taken all of that and made it possible. Im very happy with this purchase and can say that if you are thinking about being your own boss. This will be the best investment you make.

3 out of 5 stars Good outline for billing business.......2005-10-24

This book is a good general outline and business reference for anyone considering starting a business. The book focuses on sound general business information applicable to any business and it's owner. What to do and how to market a business, the tasks and research involved. The old adage of fail to plan - plan to fail, comes to mind. The book also has more information for transcription than claims (I think claims was an afterthought), but it discusses process for medical billing and some resources and references that may prove useful. A good general reference book for a claims biller or transcriptionist. However, this book will not give you the training or experience you will need to bill medical claims confidently.

2 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough.......2005-02-13

As founder and developer of a unique medical transcription company, EchoScribe Inc, I know what it takes to start a transcription company. This book comes short intoo many places. Details are lacking and not for the beginner nor the advanced transcriptionists that wants to start their own company. In fact, come to our website directly to see how we may help you start your own company. Our careers section www.echoscribe.com/careers.asp has many interesting options.

5 out of 5 stars Great starter book.......2006-02-27

I will use this book as the go to information source in making my business grow. Love it.

4 out of 5 stars Good book........2004-07-28

This book gives you a lot of great information that a lawn care operator would not think about when starting up a business. It takes a lot more than a push mower and a trimmer to make money in this business and this book lets you know what a professional in this occupation does. This is not a book that tells you how to cut grass, fertilize, ect. It deals with what it takes to run a lawn care business and it has a pricing list, checklists, etc. that helps you calculate your start up costs. Good book.

2 out of 5 stars LESS THAN I EXPECTED.......2003-03-02

THE BOOK WAS VERY SHORT AND DID NOT EXPAND VERY MUCH IN A LOT OF IMPORTANT AREA'S...THIS COULD OF ALMOST BEEN A START UP BOOK FOR ANY TYPE OF SMALL SERVICE BUSINESS. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE FACT THAT SEVERAL OF THE ORGANIZATIONS LISTED WERE EITHER NO LONGER FUNCTIONING OR NEVER DID. THE CONTACT NUMBERS AND WEB ADDRESSES ARE ALL DEAD ENDS. THE BOOK DID HOWEVER HAVE GOOD POINTS ON OUTLINING THE START OF YOUR BUSINESS (HOWEVER GEARED FOR SOMEONE WITH A LOT OF MONEY TO START). I ALSO THINK THE BOOK BARELY TOUCHED UPON THE AREA'S OF HOW TO ATTAIN LICENSE'S AND PERMIT'S. OVERALL I WAS DISAPPOINTED BUT IT WAS NOT A TOTAL LOSS, I LEARNED A FEW THINGS THAT I WILL PROBABLY USE IN THE START UP OF MY BUSINESS.
