Another basic book that concentrates on business is worth considering........2007-05-02
Business Basics Bestseller 1: The Easy, Interesting, Open-book Look at the Game of Business Numbers! 2nd Edition
I've read several books from the "Idiot" series and found they did a nice job of dishing out the basics in an easy-to-understand way. If you would like an alternative from a less known, but equally clear and concise publisher, then check out "Business Basics Bestseller 1".
It will introduce you to the basics of business including the jargon behind the numbers and where all the formulas come from before you plow into a true "finance and accounting text," search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. If you have never had this stuff 'splained' to you before, you will like it. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this text, just that you check it out as well. This book is for normal people who want an easy starting point, so you can get the same basic start without dragging around a title labelling you as an idiot.
GIVE ME A BREAK YOU PEOPLE!!!.......2004-11-05
OK...lets get this straight.. who is going to tell me that accounts payable and accounts recievable is NOT a part of accounting??? who is going to tell me that doing taxes is NOT part of accounting.. COME ON PEOPLE.. this is probably the best accounting book with finance info there could be.. sure it doesn't get into CALCULUS.. but thats not what its suppose to do.. it is suppose to be for NON-FINANCIAL-MANAGERS!!! the people who wrote bad reviews should LOOK UP the term before saying crap..the book has got alot more accoutning stuff than the just 4 chapters... (they probably left the review thinking about a different book which would explain most of this drama) but anyways.. thats all i gotta say.......
4 Chapters on Accounting and The Rest Is All Finance.......2004-02-11
I am writing this review from an Accounting perspective, and I agree with the other review that if you want to learn Finance then this book might be for you since, its HEAVILY weighted for Finance with a side order of Accounting. I totally disagree that using this book as your primary source of information will get you an "A". And even if you did get an "A", and brag that you aren't that smart, then that "A" is just a letter on a piece of paper. In the real world you would get burned. This book barely scratches the surface on Accounting, in fact its buried in a small section in the middle of the book with Finacnce before and after it.
Bottom line, if you know someone in your life that is an Accountant and you want to know a FEW of the jargain words, then check this book out at the library. If you need it for school, or to give yourself a clear understanding of the language, this book will give you a major false sense of security, and then you will feel like (as the title says), "The Complete Idiot"
Where was the Accounting?.......2001-08-27
This book seemed to be 98% about Finance with 2% brushing very lightly over double entry accounting with very vague explainations of how a credit increases liability, etc. I was very disappointed in it as I had hoped to get some grounding so I could at least figure out where to post numbers in an accounting program like MYOB. All four or five pages on accounting were inadequate and very confusing. To paraphrase the text, "you can get this, if you work at it." Unfortunately, I found very little to work with.
Accounting Guide - I fear not !!.......2001-05-29
If it's an ACCOUNTING guide you want, then this book is not for you. If it's a FINANCE guide you want, then buy it. I was hoping it would have more strictly accounting advice like how to read a balance sheet, what a profit and loss statement is, what is a liability, etc. It hardy touches accounting, concentrating more on the finance side of starting up & running a business, eg. business plans, cash flows, types of companies, tax, etc. The book however is easy to read & understand but I feel should get rid of the "accounting" term in the title.

A Title for your review........2007-01-24
I read this book because the title intrigued me. Why would I hire an idiot to invest for me? I was disappointed to discover that the text is instruction on how to do my own investing. Am I idiot enough to invest for myself? You be the judge.
Good bye loneliness........2002-08-02
I got this book from my friend Bernie who recently purchased it.
What a GREAT book! I never imagined that, in these days of political correctness, that anyone would have the nerve to address this issue publicly but here it is and all I can say is thank you it's about time.
Previous to this book I was just shoving money into my mattress hoping to have enough one day to get a woman. Not much of a plan really. Now with this book I have a structured plan and I hope to meet my objective with in the year.
Thanks Bernie!
Something for everyone (not just Women).......2002-07-26
The title is investing for women. The reality is general investment information that all can use. Like anything else something you don't know or think you do not know is scary. Of course after you have mastered it you say "No big deal"
If you have used other "Complete Idiot's" guides then you know the information is broken-down into small bites and approached with helpful hints. The book comes complete with a reference card. In the computer industry they are known as quick cards. This card gives you:
"Sixteen Basic Topics that must be evaluated"
"Five Reasons Women need to Invest Now"
"Five Important Ingredients for Stock Selection"
"Five Important Things to do Before You Begin"
"Five Common Errors to Avoid"
"Three Questions to Ask an Advisor or Broker"
I am not going through the detail as that is why you are buying the book. However the subjects covered include budgeting and lifestyle. The book can not cover everything however it discuses 401k information with not hit that there are a multitude of other investments like 403B.
Why 401K's exist and other devices to empower the individual are best explained with out all the jargon so after getting the practical from this book go for the theory. "The Capitalist Manifesto" by Louis O. Kelso
Should be called "Women's Guide to Personal Finance".......2001-03-14
I'm a woman, and this is the first book I have ever read on investing, so I guess you could say I'm the book's target audience. It covers a very broad range of topics, which surprised me at first as I was really looking for a guide on how to invest in the stock market. I did find the other chapters useful, but I found that overall, this book offers a cursory glance at many topics, rather than an in-depth guide to how to invest.
The first two chapters are a wake-up call to women. A real kick-in-the-pants is that "Of the category of Americans referred to as the elderly poor, 75% are women." In following chapters they touch on a very broad range of subjects, such as how to sort your mail (no kidding!), why to cut up your credit cards, how to buy a car, how to buy a home, why you need to write a will, etc.
The chapters that are actually on investing and retirement did give me a good introduction to understanding the basics of 401K and the different IRAs. I particularly liked the chapters on Investment Clubs and Stocks. But I found that they tried to cover so much (with not enough real-life examples), that I got rather lost in the terminology sometimes, and found myself reading the same paragraph over and over...for example, on the section about mutual bond funds, if someone can explain this sentence to me I'd be much obliged: "The fund calculates the total resale value of all the bonds then divides that large number by the number of shares in the fund to determine the price you pay for the fund and the price you can get when you sell your shares of the fund someday." Argh!
Anyway, I found this book to be a good "jumping off point" and am now on to reading more, so I would say that Sander and Boutin have accomplished their goal as far as I'm concerned. Thanks, ladies!
Instructive, readable, motivational........1999-05-15
While full of helpful, basic information about managing money, the book is fun to read. On finishing it I felt empowered! I can take charge of money-making decisions in my life. A woman is never too young or two old to learn these skills.

Excellent book for a beginner.......2006-12-16
Recently I decided to try short-term trading. Soon I realise that I need to learn more. What is going on behind bid/ask postings, how to read and interpret Level II quotes, what is Naqdaq TotalView, what advance platforms are available today, etc? So I went to local bookstore and browsed through the section. Didn't find anything satisfactory so bought this book as a temporary solution. After an hour of reading I decided to write my first book review on Amazon.com. This is simply the best book I could hope to find on the subject: precise, structured, brief yet informative, state-of-the-art information. Excellent book overall. I highly recommend this book for beginners and may be even more experienced traders that didn't keep up with the latest advances. My only complain is that the indexing is not detail enough.
MUCH Better than first edition.......2005-11-11
New edition just out. More sensible approach, and updated. Definitely worth the money, especially for new traders.
It does have a few nuggets ... How ever..........2005-09-27
This particular book is fine as a general reference on the stock market, but frankly beginners will need more concrete and to the point strategies to make it as online stock traders.
The reality is that the stock market doesn't care if you are a beginner. It will gladly take your money away if you don't know what your doing. So the bottom line is, you better be PREPARED before you even think about making your first trade.
Stock trading is a very competitive field and in order to succeed you need to FOCUS on a set of simple strategies that you can implement without hesitation.
This game is all about buying and selling according to your set ups. So the clearer your set ups are, the easier for you can be to make a profitable decision.
Hopefully some sites on the web do offer more relevant and updated stock trading information. One of those sites is Sharp Trades ( SharpTrades com )
They focus mainly on short term momentum stock trading strategies, that in my opinion are easier to implement than many other technical systems outhere.
Stock trading doesn't have to be complicated as many people perceive. But you do need to follow a well organized set of rules and tactics, that once you master them, you can aspire to replicate profitable trades with consistency.
Good first book on day trading.......2005-03-09
If your stock market experience is limited, this book will serve as a good introduction. The material is basic and presented in an easily understood format.
0 stars if allowed.......2004-12-21
Sorry, but this book appears to have been written by a wanna be writer whose style---if you can call it that---is so blatantly irritating, condescending, and ridiculous that its facetiouseness distracts from any worth the book might otherwise provide which is minimal at best. Almost every paragraph contains a silly lead in to the next as if the writer is trying to hold your hand and help you 'get through' the material. Stuff like, 'ok, we're almost there now!' and 'I know you probably want to get right to the good stuff, but first, let's get a few of the harder points over with!....' Still with me? Both the writer and publisher should be pilloried for presuming the public is THAT dumb. You guessed it: don't buy this rubbish. And while we're at it, probably the only other book that's just as bad as this one for silliness is Toni Turner's.

A Good Investment!.......2000-08-14
Sarah Young Fisher provides excellent value for your $18.95 spent - 325 pages of useful information plus Glossary and Resources. Her thesis is important, even if it is more subtle than explicit: running an investment club is a bit more difficult than it looks. The best proof of this resides in the now famous Beardstown Ladies who thought they were earning 23 percent on their money, only to learn that the true figure was 9 percent. Put another way, as good as they thought they were, the ladies lacked the technical expertise to calculate their rate of return. Sarah is very clear about the start up costs (about $1200) and monthly costs (about $150) paid to lawyers, accountants, and book keepers - no small consideration. Then, of course, there are taxes to consider .... This is a good deal more complex than organizing a hiking club, and yet it is supposed to be FUN! Her most valuable piece of advice is: not even a good financial advisor has the same stake in your money as you do. Her most futile piece of advice is: don't get emotionally attached to a stock - a bit like asking humans not to be human. The contention that most clubs probably need a professional financial advisor to get started almost seems to take some fun out of the group adventure. Essentially, however, the book is very comprehensive, easy to read and understand, and an invaluable guide to any club starting up. Indeed, the book itself is a good investment!
A Good Start.......2000-07-17
I was hesistant to purchase any book that in its title makes reference to the reader being an "idiot," but this book gives the fledgling investment club a good head start in organizing itself. The chapters progress logically from the history of investment clubs, to tax considerations, to keeping records of investments. Some sections are necessarily abridged, and the author points the reader to other, more robust sources (you should consult sources dedicated to the topic of stocks/mutual funds/bonds rather than rely on the section in this book). Each chapter gives good tips and warnings on how to run the club.
One topic that the author seemed to treat lightly is online brokerages and trading. The author advocates seeking the advice of a full-service broker -- something that fledgling investment clubs may not be able to afford -- to handle the club's trading. Our investment club extensively uses online brokerage services and online resources to keep the monthly club contribution low.
Book Description
More personal finance than home improvement, this book will teach readers the art of finding the right kinds of homes to purchase; how to determine what kinds of repairs will translate into high returns; how to work with contractors or subcontractors to get the work done; and how to sell properties for a profit.

ACHIEVES ITS AIM - INTRODUCTION.......2006-02-12
This book achieves what it sets out to do: provide a simple introduction to the topic of real estate fixer-uppers and give the beginner a guidemap of a first deal.
It walks the potential investor through the main steps, from finding and choosing a house, to inspecting it, to purchasing it, to doing the basic fixes, to putting it in the market for sale. Being a "Complete Idiots Guide", one knows what to expect, and this book does exactly what it sets out to do. It is particularly useful in giving small tips that would likely only be known by someone with much experience that has fallen into many traps.

Get a copy for yourself and anyone else who needs wise financial advise........2007-07-30
Great book. It emphasizes the importance of saving and then goes on the give good investing advise. A novice all the way to a sophisticated investor will learn a lot from this book. I bought 3 copies and am loaning them out to family and friends.
Silly Title With Good Information.......2006-11-13
This contains a lot of good advice about how to begin accumulating wealth and increase the same.
It has good information about investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. It also has a lot of advice for those who are starting or building a business.
Although it is good, I think that there are other books on building wealth that are far better. I would particularly recommend 'The Total Money Makeover' by Dave Ramsey. It is written in a more user friendly style and has a great plan that is workable for virtually everyone.
Great book! Common sense, easy to comprehend!.......2006-11-11
This book works! I bought the first edition years ago and just bought the 3rd edition as a gift for a freind. The advice works! It is written in clear language. The author does not try to intimidate the beginner. He is trying to make the reader feel confident that they can do this too!
This was my first investment book. Many more have followed but this one influenced my life the most. Great book!
Suzie Orman, Your Fired.......2004-09-21
I purchased this book based on the reviews of other readers, and must admit I was very skeptical about it. But nothing ventured, nothing gained... This ventured really paid off.
I haven't even read the entire book at the time of this review, but I have to give it 5 stars. This book takes away the smoke & mirrors about investing, and the author's enthusiasm about investing in contagious.
I was a Suzie Orman fan and I'm sure she's a great person, but she comes off kind of arrogant: it's her way, or no way at all. Every couple of years Suzie has to repackage her advice into a new book. I've read most of her books: same song, maybe a different tune.
Larry's book straight plain English with no BS: here's what you need to do, displicine is needed if you're serious, stay way of these investments, when you reach these milestones here are the considerations needed, etc.
The book changed my outlook on investing. You don't need a full service broker. Buy this book, and forget paying commissions. A little research and you can just as good as the pros, provided you do your homework.
Best investment.......2004-03-15
The book lays out in simple, easy-to-understand terms, the ways you achieve wealth. The writing is not preachy nor circuitous like Rich Dad, Poor Dad. What we have here is a clear, easy-to-follow roadmap to financial independence. There are loads of insights and mind-opening concepts here, so I recommend buying this book. It's money well spent.
Book Description

Month- and year-end accounting tasks and procedures
Customer Reviews:
There are better accounting books.......2007-01-05
I wasn't impressed with the over-all organization of this book, though almost every accounting issue is approached the overiding narrative is not in a logical order, in my opinion.
Definitely buy it, but get some other sources too.......2006-02-10
This book was one of the ones recommended to me by a friend who's a CPA. It does a good job of explaining the principles of accounting, but if you use it by itself you'll still have a few questions. I would recommend supplementing it with Alpha Teach Yourself Accounting in 24 Hours, as well as online research.
Great If You're Starting a New Business.......2004-01-14
This book does an excellent job of taking you through the steps of setting up your accounting system. Starting with business structure, then on to developing your chart of accounts, and then teaching you how to work with dual entry accounting for all aspects of your business - sales, expenses, employees and benefits, and taxes. It also teaches you how to close the books monthly, develop financial statements and finanlize your year-end close. Great stuff! Easy to read and understand.
Small Business Accounting Made Easy.......2004-01-14
The review by mrbigbeast seriously misrepresents what is presented in this book. In Chapter 4, following chapters that explain how to set up the initial chart of accounts, a section entitled, "Working with Debits and Credits" explains the dual-entry accounting system. There are two full chapters on setting up accounts - one relating to the accounts for balance sheet items and one relating to the accounts for income statement items. The first chapter talks about structuring the business and how this impacts your accounting system.
Most parts of the book reinforce the explanation of debits and credits and how to work with the dual-entry accounting system including examples of how to make dual-entry accounting entries for topics such as tracking sales, determining costs and expenses, adjusting sales and expenses, cashing out, hiring and paying employees, taxes, and employee benefits. There is also an extensive section on how to close the books and another on preparing financial reports. The final section of the book talks about year-end close and the final chapter talks about computerized accounting.
