The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change was a groundbreaker when it was first published in 1990, and it continues to be a business bestseller with more than 10 million copies sold. Stephen Covey, an internationally respected leadership authority, realizes that true success encompasses a balance of personal and professional effectiveness, so this book is a manual for performing better in both arenas. His anecdotes are as frequently from family situations as from business challenges.

Before you can adopt the seven habits, you'll need to accomplish what Covey calls a "paradigm shift"--a change in perception and interpretation of how the world works. Covey takes you through this change, which affects how you perceive and act regarding productivity, time management, positive thinking, developing your "proactive muscles" (acting with initiative rather than reacting), and much more.

This isn't a quick-tips-start-tomorrow kind of book. The concepts are sometimes intricate, and you'll want to study this book, not skim it. When you finish, you'll probably have Post-it notes or hand-written annotations in every chapter, and you'll feel like you've taken a powerful seminar by Covey. --Joan Price

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Anyone who thinks the audiocassette adaptation of Stephen Covey's bestseller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, is a shortcut to reading the book has another thing coming. As a preview, the cassette is worth every one of its 90 minutes; as a substitute for the original, it will only leave you wishing for the rest. There's a reason 7 Habits has sold more than 5 million copies and been translated into 32 languages. Serious work has obviously gone into it, and serious change can likely come out of it--but only with constant discipline and steadfast commitment. As the densely packed tape makes immediately clear, this is no quick fix for what's ailing us in our personal and professional lives.

The tape opens to the silky-smooth, overtrained voice of the female narrator, who's responsible for tying together audio clips from actual Covey seminars. Leaving aside the occasional attempts at promoting Covey and his institute, her script does a first-rate job of making sense of Covey's own intense, analogy-rich style of explaining his habits. There's nothing simple about his approach to becoming an effective person. The first three habits alone--which have to do with personal responsibility, leadership, and self-management--could take years to master. Yet the last four are unattainable, the narrator insists, if you can't acquire the personal security--the "inner core," says Covey--that presumably comes from a mastery of the foundation.

Throughout our lessons, Covey's presence is both learned and thoroughly appealing. He drops references to the likes of Socrates, T.S. Eliot, and Robert Frost with the aplomb of an English professor. And his knack for mixing everyday stories with abstract concepts manages to clarify difficult issues while respecting our intelligence. You could argue that the cassette is nothing more than a clever marketing tool for selling another few million copies of the book. But, even at that, it's worth the investment in time and concentration: in the end, we're moved to learn more about integrating all seven habits in our struggle to become better and, yes, more effective people. (Running time: 1.5 hours, one cassette) --Ann Senechal

5 out of 5 stars It's hard to argue with real truths.......2007-10-06

I received this book and the audiobook cds from a past employer as one of those condescending, "we believe in enriching our people" gifts to every manager, while unfortunately every principle was broken and twisted regularly. Ironically, this book helped me see that where I was may not have been the best choice for me and my goals. And to think, I may never have known...
It's true that it's almost impossible to argue with the principles Covey lays out. He makes them real with his examples, and he helps the reader to understand how he or she can apply them to absolutely any life, not necessarily the upper-management type I had this book pegged to be for.
If you're really interested in learning about yourself and seriously challenging yourself, I give this book my highest recommendation. It is the hardest work you will ever do to examine yourself, but you will come out a far better and more mature person for it.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring.......2007-10-02

Certainly a great book to read! It points out a lot of common but very important issues in our lives, which I bet everyone's dealing with everyday, and provides solutions to them (soft skills). The book's written in a vivid and engaging manner, with many anecdotes and author's own experinces. I can tell my life has changed after reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars great book, great service.......2007-09-26

the book was a great price and when i thought i was eligible for the free shipping but wasn't the customer service was great and helped me correct my order! and they were fast!

2 out of 5 stars Theoretically sound, but not practical. .......2007-09-25

A bit wordy in spots, a lot of the points in 7 Habits could've been reduced. I was also a bit surprised at how much Mr. Covey uses Judeo-Christian reference to convince the reader of his ideas. I'm always weary of authors who don't beat us down, but tap us on the head with their Christian ideals as a not so subtle conversion tool. And what's with the Anwar Sadat reference? Of course he decided to do things different, he was in jail. Like so many other famous leaders to include Yitzak Rabin, Kennedy, Evers, King, etc, "big symbols, make big targets" and Sadat was eventually assasinated. Therein lies my disagreement with the premise with this book. More often than not, situation dictates action and environments, social, economic and otherwise, have a profound affect on our everyday existence. Although there are several theoretically sound principles throughout theme of the book, I think from a practical point of view, they may be hard; if not impossible, to implement in our no nonsense, capitalistic American society.

1 out of 5 stars Horrifying.......2007-09-25

This may be the very worst book I have read in my 37 years. Stuffed with linguistic fluff and stylistic errors, and short on ideas and evidence, the book reads like a map of the capitalist, Christian fundamentalist, anti-intellectual U.S. mind. Covey claims to base his book on "objective" principles that transcend all time and places, yet these principles, whose universality he fails to document, are little more than figments of his personal worldview--"potential," "growth," "quality," and so on. Most telling is Covey's terminology and ranking of "private victory" before "public victory." This happens to be the same rhetoric that has justified U.S. and European conquests of "uncivilized" peoples over the last few hundred years. No, this is no Bible of leadership or management. Anyone looking for a well-written work on these topics should check out Kouzes and Posner's Leadership Challenge. Covey doesn't deserve a dime of the millions he's made by pimping this cultural trash.

Book Description

From Stephen R. Covey's eldest son comes a revolutionary new path towards productivity and satisfaction. Trust, says Stephen M.R. Covey, is the very basis of the new global economy, and he shows how trust—and the speed at which it is established with clients, employees and constituents—is the essential ingredient for any high-performance, successful organization.

For business leaders and public figures in any arena, The Speed of Trust offers an unprecedented and eminently practical look at exactly how trust functions in our every transaction and relationship—from the most personal to the broadest, most indirect interaction—and how to establish trust immediately so that you and your organization can forego the time-killing, bureaucratic check-and-balance processes so often deployed in lieu of actual trust.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars All hype, no protein.......2007-09-19

Lots of anecdotes about the author's years in the business world. The author testifies that trust is great and makes things work. Little of substance in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Trust is Fundamental in Relational Management.......2007-08-24

Trust may be the missing ingredient for the relational management model to succeed, but Trust (confidence + credibility) is an outcome, not an input. To get a Trust outcome requires the right inputs and in this book, the next generation's spokesperson for the Covey dynasty, Stephen M. R. Covey, tells us what trust means as well as provides plenty of examples of how important trust is when it comes to delivering business performance.

M.R. uses the "ripple effect" metaphor with Self at the center and waves rippling from the inside out to describe the "5 Waves of Trust." Using this metaphor, the first trust wave is Self-Trust (credibility driven), then comes the Relationship-Trust (consistent behavior driven) wave, an Organizational-Trust (alignment driven) wave, a Market-Trust (reputation driven) wave, and finally a Societal-Trust (giving back or contribution driven) wave.

Staying with the emphasis on managing `Self' first, Covey then provides the substance of the Self-Trust wave; the 4 cores of Credibility - integrity, intent, capability, and results. For the Relationship-Trust wave he identifies 13 critical behaviors. With the remaining trust waves, the dialogue continues the book's main theme - understanding the cost of mistrust and the value of trust - as it discusses organizational alignment, market reputation, and societal contribution. As M.R. says, "the dividends of trust can significantly enhance the quality of every relationship on every level of your life". If you doubt that, read this book.

Stephen gives you insights that anyone can use in their quest to excel at building trust in business relationships.

The Speed of Trust gets to the core roots of integrity and how 'trusted' leaders and organizations thrive.

Everyone should make the time to read this book."

1 out of 5 stars Author Lost My Trust Immediately, So Why Would I Listen To Anything He Has To Say?.......2007-08-01

I checked out this book from the library, read the 1st chapter - then immediately put it by the door so I could return it the next day. Why? Mr. Covey has no credibility himself. At least not with me. Here's why.

The 1st Chapter is basically his How I Learned About The Importance Of Trust saga. The problem is that it's an unintentional unmasking of a narcissist. His only admitted mistake in establishing trust with the Franklin side of the Franklin-Covey merger is his assumption that all the Franklin people were as well-informed on how great he is as the Covey people.

Mr. Covey then proceeds to take things further by showing how stricken he is with Rich Offspring Disease. He expresses shock that anyone assumed he was in top position at Covey just because of his name. Apparently Mr. Covey wants us to believe that he was interviewed for his job at Covey by people who had No Idea he was related to THE Covey family. Please.

Mr. Covey is one more person who has been handed the keys to the corner office without having to earn it first. His family is free to do that if they like. However, swallowing his insistence that he would've had the job even if he hadn't been related is too much to swallow.

A man who can't admit he's gotten breaks in life is not a man who can be trusted. Nor is he a man who knows much about trust. At least that's my opinion.

I guess we're also intended to believe that Mr. Covey got his book deal the hard way - soliciting agents and publishing houses with an unsolicited manuscript, with no help from or trading on the connections of his famous author father. Just like J.K. Rowling.

Does someone who trades in these delusions sound like he understands real, lasting trust and credibility?

5 out of 5 stars The Speed of Trust.......2007-07-17

Incredible! Knowing what incredible work Stephen R Covey has produced led me to purchase this book authored by his son The book exceeded my expectations. Stephen MR Covey (Dr Covey's son) does an incredible job of using real examples on how TRUST will either move a relationship on quickly or the lack of TRUST will slow it down or kill it altogether.

In my 10+ years of selling for a fortune 500 company, the instances when I was able to build a great deal of trust with my clients, were the times the sales process moved along quickly.

This is a MUST read for everyone, from business people to husbands and wifes, all will benefit from the insight this author has

5 out of 5 stars A classic life enhancer.......2007-09-21

Covey's book is a classic that I frequently pull off my shelf to review. This CD set is a convenient way to review the timeless principles Covey teaches and to trigger thoughts about new applications in my own life while I'm on the road.

I'm a big supporter of listening to self development and training material while you drive/ride. Currently in my car's CD player: Dave Lakhani's "Making Marketing Work" (a guide for successful sales/marketing in today's world), Kevin Hogan's "Time for Love, Time for Money" (rock solid set on time, energy and financial creation) . . . and High School Musical 2 soundtrack (for my girls, not me - really!).

Your life will be richer - way beyond finances - for reading Covey's book and frequently reinforcing with this set of CDs. Even if you have not read the book and don't intend to, you will still benefit from these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a Classic.......2007-09-16

I have read the book and I now faciliate 7-Habits Seminars using the 3-CD Audio version which is simply fantastic. After absorbing a plethera of thse types of books, I recommend that Dale Carnegies' How to Win Friends and Influence People be used as a pre-requisite to the teachings of Dr. Covey. DC focus is on very basic human relationships which is a great primer and reinforcement for the first 3 of Stephen Habits whick comprise his concept of the private victory. Too many companies make the mistake of promoting their technically competent to the position of leader without an accurate assessment of their basic character and leadership potential. They usually assume that basic great character is already there sometimes based on just a high likability factor. You really have to have these character base concepts down before you move on to the public victory which is the path to true leadership.

5 out of 5 stars A Realistic Look in the Mirror.......2007-08-13

It's been around awhile, but this publication is at the top of the list. It makes you take stock in yourself and others.

3 out of 5 stars It is better to take time to read this material instead.......2007-08-10

The author just seems to be reading the book at his pace. It is lacking artistic touch. Although he understands the material very well, he has not taken time to illustrate the material using extra examples. A role playing of several people could be more effective to make it more interesting. The material is too intense to just hear and go to the next step without thinking through. On the other hand, it works out much better just reading the book and understanding the material, making notes and see how I can relate to the material.

5 out of 5 stars Truly effective!.......2007-05-17

My first audio book. Truly an effective use of time as a commuter. Great principle based habits to live by presented in an easily digestible format.

Book Description

This book is about success ... how to achieve it, keep it, and enjoy it ... by making better choices.

David Cottrell has spent much of his career seeking answers to what separates the successful from those who fail to reach their level of success and has incorporated his findings in 12 Choices.

"Success is ultimately realized by people who make more right choices and recover from their wrong choices," said Cottrell. "This book outlines the choices successful people make most often and how others can learn to make the same choices to be successful in their careers and personal lives."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidance for managing your goals.......2007-05-29

12 Choices is an easy read which provides common sense guidance for achieving your goals, whether they be personal or career. It is a MUST READ for people of all ages. Adopting the choices expounded in this book will positively lead to success in any endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars I made the right "Choice" picking up this book - Outstanding!!!.......2005-10-30

I picked this book up because of the word choices in the title. Making right choices and taking responsibility for one's decisions and attitudes is essential for success. David Cottrell does a good job giving bite size nuggets of information in each chapter on how to make character, action, and investment choices. The stories, illustrations, and quotes are fresh and encouraging in helping to enhance my chance for success.

The book asks an outstanding question and provides insight on what makes the difference in someone who is successful and someone who is not. David Cottrell says, "A major difference is that successful people make choices that others don't like to make. If you ask the successful people, they may tell you that they may not want to make the right choices, either, but they also realize that there is often a greater purpose in choosing to do the things they may not want to do."

The book is broken up into three parts:

1) The foundation for success is our character choices.
2) To move towards success I need to make the right "action" choices
3) To profit from success I need to make the right "investments."

The book covers excellent subjects like not having a victim mentality, staying committed, having values, and being someone of integrity. Action needs to say away from "Someday Isle", and be persistent, have the right attitude, and move through adversity. To connect I need to have the right relationships, be teachable, face the truth, and realize the legacy and gifts I have.

I highly recommend this brilliant book and look forward to picking up and reading more of David Cottrell's books.

4 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2005-07-27

12 Choices... That Lead to Your Success is part of a series of fine books by David Cottrell. He is a prolific author and professional speaker on the topics of leadership, personal development and customer service. David Cottrell's writing style is succinct, direct and easy to comprehend.

12 Choices... That Lead to Your Success is based on the principle that our daily choices determine our future and level of success. As Cottrell states in the Introduction, "Our daily challenge is to live our character, action and investment choices so naturally that we make the best choices almost subconsciously. This requires patience, honest reflection, adaptation, and commitment". As is hinted in this sentence, this book divides the 12 Choices into three categories or types of decisions we make...character, action and investment. Each of the 12 choices are discussed in their own chapter within the book.

The four "Character choices" we make are known only to the person making them and are 1) No-Victim, 2) Commitment, 3) Values and 4) Integrity. Cottrell considers these the foundation of success. The four "Action" choices we make are 5) Do-something, 6) Persistence, 7) Attitude and 8) Overcoming Adversity. These choices engage one in movement toward success. The four "Investment" choices include 9) Relationships, 10) Accepting criticism, 11) Accepting reality, and 12) Leaving a legacy. These are the choices that allow one to reap the joys and profit of achieving success.

12 Choices... That Lead to Your Success does not break any new ground or add deeper insight into understanding the individual choices. However, it collects these valuable principles into an easy to read format that gets directly to the heart of decision-making. Attaining success is certainly more complicated than presented in this book, but understanding and appreciating these 12 Choices is an excellent start.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure trove resonating with wisdom.......2005-06-13

12 Choices... That Lead To Your Success is a business self-help book by the president and CEO of CornerStone Leadership Institute. The twelve general principles are especially intended for those striving to be successful in business, yet are so universal to apply to diverse facets of life itself. From making the choice to do something to advance toward one's goals, to understanding that there will always be enemies and the importance of choosing carefully not to align oneself with destructive individuals (including short-tempered types and rebels against authority, who are on a collision course with failure), to remaining crucially aware of the limits of reality, 12 Choices... That Lead To Your Success is a treasure trove resonating with wisdom about the power of the human mind and attitude. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all ages, for all settings, for all reasons.......2005-02-25

I bought 12 Choices for my work -- and additional copies for my coworkers to use...but what I found was information that was useful to my spouse, my kids, my parents and my Sunday School class.

Mr. Cottrell has captured and condensed the most important and the most impactful choices we make throughout our lives. By providing an infrastructure so we can classify our choices, we understand their value and the importance of making the right choices.

After reading this book, I took it home to family and then shared it with friends. We all took away something a little bit different but it was all helpful...and it was written in a way so that even my teenager got the message about the types of choices we make and how to do a better job of choosing the right road.

This little book is worth its weight in gold and is right up there with Stephen Covey's Seven Habits book.

A very interesting and practical workbook, but possession of the 7 Habits book itself is necessary to really appreciate the exercises.

4 out of 5 stars K.I.S.S........2007-01-18

In comparison to the morally toned companion book, the workbook doesn't mess around. The absence of personal anecdotes and reduction in US vocabulary and idioms should make this a more accessible intercultural choice for non native English speakers, particularly those for whom personal life disclosure is culturally inappropriate. Add to that plenty of space for individual input and keeping the explanations short and simple and the result is less of an indoctrinating feel, more of a tool. The workbook stands by itself as a replacement to the book, not simply a companion.

4 out of 5 stars Becoming the ultimate supervisor........2007-01-15

I purchased this book, along with it's workbook, to enhance my supervisory skills. The book not only helps improve my working techniques, but also sharpens my skills at home, as Mother and Friend.

1 out of 5 stars UnWorkable Workbook! Cannot Print It! Cannot Write In It!.......2005-06-22

Franklin Covey reps knew nothing about this product when I called them, because they do not offer it in e-book form. It was never designed to be released in this format. Amazon.com had a nice idea but they didn't think it through. They need to 'Synergize' better. Don't waste your time and money on this product.

1 out of 5 stars Adobe E-book version is a TOTAL RIPOFF!.......2005-01-29

Do not purchase this ebook! You can't print it. AND it uses some sort .NET internet validation that stopped working on the laptop I downloaded it on. So, I CAN'T print it and I CAN'T read it. For GOD'S SAKE SOMEBODY TELL ME - WHAT GOOD IS THIS LOAD OF E-BOOK! Unreal. Absolutely unreal.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful!.......2005-05-18

This book as one review most aptly put is "an inspirational recharge that will bring you closer to a holistic sense of personal effectiveness and purpose." Probably the most effective way of absorbing the principles is to see him speak live. I have heard him in his audio version of the seven habits book. He is excellent because he comes across as an average guy, not arrogant, trying to give you the most useful advice possible. He is very much like the fictional character from my book "Stark Contrast" named Dr. Tom Kelstone.

Read this book with Bach's Brandenbergs in the background, it works!

4 out of 5 stars Helps One to Stay Focused.......2004-01-20

In this followup up to the original book by a similar title, Dr. Covey provides insight on how to work the plan. Each day has an inspiring excerpt that is easily grasped. Consider, for example, the December 5 entry where he reminds us of the need for continual rewewal. He writes: "Habit 7: 'Sharpen the Saw' is personal Production Capability. It's preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have--you. It's renewing the four dimensions of your nature--physical, spiritual, mental and social/emotional."

That is the purpose of this book, in essence. It is to remind us of the need to be continually renewed and refreshed. This book is designed to do that mentally. I find it inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Supporting the 7 Habits.......1999-10-10

First, the reviewer from Falls Church, VA makes the statement that Covey makes reference to pages in The 7 habits.... If the person read the sub-title "Living the seven habits" one would expect Covey to refer to his other book.

This book is an excellent guide to to use for your daily life. Yes, it takes time but it is worth it. It is written to support the information from the 7 Habits. Read the 7H first and then use this book.

5 out of 5 stars Covey is useful!.......1998-06-10

In response to another's review, I must rise to Covey's defense. Covey seems well aware of the "mind-numbing" avalanche of tasks and things to do that people have to deal with. Seven Habits stuff is a direct response to that. It offers a good method for really thinking about what's important to you and making time for things that really matter -- WITHOUT the "numbing." I feel the buzzwords and catch phrases are designed to make a complex approach more accessible. I really think it's unfair to ascribe evil intentions to the offer of free items. Covey repeatedly states in his books that any organizer or planner can be adapted to his philosophy, but his stuff costs about the same as any other and if you are interested in using his approach it is way handier than putting adapting another system. This particular book is just OK. If you have the planner, or the original book which is a much better purchase, I don't see the need for this.

That said, there is a lot of marketing around 7H stuff which I don't have any use for. Despitew this, if you're bitter and angry I don't suppose any self-help book will work for you.

1 out of 5 stars Hard sell for Covey's products.......1998-05-09

Despite Stephen Covey's "intentions", the book comes across self serving and superfical. His overbearing, supreme attitude drives me nuts. I try to like his writng, but I continually think about the poor, stressed-out readers, who have mind-numbing schedules/priorites, and are trying to be "good people" as defined by Stephen Covey. He does remind us, and give us permission, to get past the everyday habits that have no meaning and give us no satisifaction. Maybe, just maybe, daily life IS a matter of getting through the day the best you can with as little guilt as possible. Stephen Covey has now added more chores and things to feel guilty about. Thank Stephen.

The book provides daily reflections to muse on and base your day on. Of course each daily reflection referes you to a page in Covey's 7 Habits book (rush out and buy it). Actually this book reminds me of "The Course in Miracle" and "Simple Abundance" combined. On page 246, Covey offers a free one-month supplly of weekly worksheets from the "The Seven Habits Organizer" (let's get you hooked on them so you'll buy, buy, buy). The marketing of Stephen Covey never stops.

So, if you want to add more chores to your day and add to Covey's bank account, buy this book. If you love terms like "emotional bank account", "mission statement", "principle-centered", "lose-win", and "win-win", you'll love this book.
