Practical, Simple and Powerful Self-Help.......2007-09-30
Since I was nineteen, I have perused, studied, analyzed, and read dozens of self-help books. I am now fifty which gives you an indication of my interest(obssession?) in this subject. Most of the books "talked at" me, telling me I should do this, that, and the other. In most cases, I always felt a rebellion against someone "telling me what to do" rather than helping me find my own inner knowledge, strength and courage. That is, until I read Taming Your Gremlin. In this slim book, I've learned how to identify and deal with my own gremlins and avoid as much as possible with "shoulds" and "oughts" and "needs". Rick Carson's down to earth style is entertaining and has taught me to bring out my genuine, self-honest self. Becoming self-aware and not self condemning makes the changes easier, much more of an adventure than forcing it. It is a work of True Love!
Lauren Lagergren, South Bend, WA
A useful resource.......2007-07-28
Carson has written an excellent self-help guide, with a wealth of useful suggestions for taming the negative effects of your 'gremlin' (your internal sense of self-doubt). The book is explained in a suitably direct manner with a simple, user-friendly tone. There are a number of different exercises that will be sure to keep the gremlin on a leash (subject to regular practise) and stop him from pissing on your bonfire. The chief criticism would be that he goes a little over the top with whole gremlin metaphor at times. Still, some of the tips are extremely useful, such as 'never expose your gremlin to bright light', 'never get your gremlin wet' and (apparently by far the most important) 'NEVER feed it after midnight'. Wise words indeed.
Taming your Gremlin.......2007-05-22
For those of us fighting depression, this book along with Dr. Burn's book.
"Feeling Good," continue to be my reads of choice even with my meds.
This is a great book if you have voices in your head telling you what a horrible person you are. It's of the same genre of "Who Moved My Cheese," and just as entertaining with a powerful message.
s
therapeutic.......2007-04-02
This interesting and simple little book helped me grapple successfully with the psychological fallout of a divorce. I was sorry I had not read it before I had created big problems for myself by listening to my gremlin.
Terrific Book!.......2007-03-25
This is a great book for anyone trying to tame the doubtful, critical voice that lives inside all of us. It is an easy, enjoyable read and very insightful. I use the book regularly in my life coaching practice and all of my clients have found it helpful.
Book Description
Leadership expert Dr. John C. Maxwell knows that people are never successful by talent alone, and in this book he outlines the 13 crucial things you can do to maximize your natural talents and become a "Talent-plus" person.
Customer Reviews:
Strength Approach Fans.......2007-08-23
Not so many "management gurus" believe in "strength approach" like John C Maxwell and even some of his ways are included in the Cliffton's Talents, this book show us the ways how to use our Talents.
If you can change your paradigm from Deficit Approach to Strength Approach, which is more productive, more simple and better communication, I recomend you to read this book.
Life Changing book for those who have raw talent.......2007-08-06
I have just finished one of the greatest books written for people with talent by John Maxwell. "Talent is never enough." I want to encourage all of you to read this book. This has been one of the best reads of my life. Here is a great quote and then a summary of the 13 areas that add to our talent.
I challenge each of you to do this exercise, it will build the team you are a part of. "For the next two weeks, make a commitment to yourself to take no credit for anything that goes right. Praise your employees, co-workers, colleagues, and family members for their contributions. Note the difference it makes in their performance and your relationship with them. I believe that once you've tired it, you will enjoy giving the credit away so much that it will become a regular part of your life."
1. Belief lifts my talent.
2. Passion energizes my talent.
3. Initiative activates my talent
4. Focus directs my talent.
5. Preparation positions my talent.
6. Practice sharpens my talent.
7. Perseverance sustains my talent.
8. Courage tests my talent.
9. Teachability expands my talent.
10. Character protects my talent.
11. Relationships influence my talent.
12. Responsibility strengthens my talent.
13. Teamwork multiplies my talent.
As a team, my hope is that we can help each other grow to new heights daily. Adopt one of these and work on them daily. For me, courage and Perseverance have been a weakness of mine, however, after reading this book I feel like these two weaknesses will turn into great strengths.
Great Book .......2007-05-21
This book is great especially for those who may feel that they can solely get by on just talent. The book is well written and details what how important it is not to just rely on the talent you have.
This book is a good choice.......2007-05-14
John Maxwell has written dozens of books, and I was told by a friend who follows the author that this might be his best. Strong praise for someone who has written some great books.
I was not disappointed. While I have only read two other books by Mr. Maxwell, this one is fantastic. It was inspiring and motivational and is the type of book that couples advice with actions steps.
I keep a list of all books I read each year. Those that are exceptional get a star next to them. Talent Is Never Enough got two stars.
enlightening.......2007-05-12
Gives an outstanding insight into a topic that most people never truly understand. An incredible point of view mixed with great quotes and interesting stories.

Customer Reviews:
So-so for 2007, Great for 2004.......2007-10-02
Well maybe great for pre-World Wide Web. Most, if not all, the information about the schools is available from online resources. If the author was to compile and update this information yearly and post it on a web site using the book with a key number, he would have a winning combination. Alas, that isn't the case.
Having little or no access to counseling resources, the most difficult part of the PA application process was writing the narrative which for the 2007 application cycle, at least, was to address the statement: Please describe your motivation towards becoming a PA. Looking at the sample essays in the text, I put together a 2000 word statement to somewhat match the sample essay's length. Only one small problem, CASPA now restricts applicants to 2,970 characters which in my case was 519 words. One just doesn't have the luxury of explanations and developing ideas that is shown in the text.
At this stage, I have submitted my CASPA application and am now in the waiting game to hear about interviews. In skimming the interview information, it appears to be a rehash of standard interview hints. Whom would think that one should be well groomed at a professional interview? Whom would to think to have a strong confident posture in interviewing for a medical position. While these hints may be valuable to someone whom has not gone through an interview process, they are standard for most people that have been involved in health care which the majority of Master's level PA applicants have been.
With a minimum of updating to discuss CASPA and how to write an effective 2,970 application essay, this text could be a great help. Until then, at best a so-so use of the dead trees used to create the paper it is printed on.
Great Book!.......2007-09-24
If you are serious about getting into the P.A. profession you NEED this book. Extremely informative. It's been a huge help to me while putting my application together. It was actually recommended to me by the director of the program I'm trying to get into.
goody but oldy.......2007-03-30
I'm contemplating applying to a PA program, and my impression of the book is pretty consistent with the positive reviews here. My only concern is that this 2nd edition from 2003 may be getting out of date, what with all the newsmag articles and whatnot in the last few years about how PAs are going to be one the best job fields to enter over the next decade. This book could really stand to have another edition printed soon.
Excellent. Goal-oriented, methodical, challenging........2007-03-19
Followed the steps in this book, got accepted by both PA schools that I interviewed with.
What more should I write?
Physician Assistant School.......2007-02-19
Very informative. Highlights information in a logical sequence to assist with adequate preparation for the application process. Highly recommend this book.
Customer Reviews:
Good for Examples.......2007-06-12
I rated this book a 3 for two reasons. First many of the essays are from people with extraordinary circumstances or experiences that inspired them to apply to grad school. Secondly I thought many of the examples were longer than the 1 page max allowed by some graduate schools.
Like Having Your Own Personal Advisor.......2007-02-17
When I was thinking about writing my personal statement, I didn't even know where to begin so I picked up this book and I'm glad that I did. It guided me through the essay writing process from brainstorming to final draft. This book also discusses what to look for in a graduate program, financial aid options, how to follow up on an application and more. Using the advice in this book, along with having a good academic record, I was able to get into my first choice school. Reading this book is like having your own personal advisor to guide you through the application process. It's also easy to read and very engaging. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about applying to graduate school.
Closest thing to "secrets" of Grad/Professional school admissions.......2007-01-23
I read this book many times in preparation for my own grad school (social science Ph.D.) applications. I've got my degree, and I'm an Assistant Professor at a large research university. I've now read many graduate admissions essays. From my experience, it seems most essays are not as effective as they could be. Most are just poorly conceived, and the authors seem to misunderstand the point of a personal statement. This book will help you not only to write and revise your essay, but to do so with a clear understanding of the essay's purpose and its intended audience. This book really is a must read for anyone applying to grad school. I recommend it to all my undergraduate students who ask me for a grad school letter of recommendation.
GREAT!.......2007-01-10
This book got me started when I was having trouble writing my statement of puprose for Grad School. I recommend it highly!
A good choice for anyone applying to graduate school.......2007-01-04
This book helped me get started and to organize my thoughts. I used it as a jumping off point and it really helped. I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to get thier essay written and needs some help getting thoughts organized. There are lots of essays from other students that help give you an idea on how to write your own.
Book Description
Building on her successful series of small books about big ideas (Choosing Happiness, Things I Want My Daughters to Know, Time Alive), Alexandra Stoddard's new book focuses on taking charge of your life––your way. In brief essays filled with the optimism, ideas, and examples her readers love, she shares 50 choices you can make to live joyfully in pursuit of what is true, good and beautiful. Her essays remind us to trust ourselves (Information Is Not Inspiration), to stay steady in a storm (Your Choices Count Most in a Crisis), to take risks (Leave the Safe Harbor), to finish unfinished business (Have As Few Regrets as Possible), to surround ourselves with delights (Redefine What Is Beautiful), and to have fun (Cheap Thrills Are Thrilling) This will be Alexandra's 25th book, with publication timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the publication of her classic book on inspired lifestyle Living a Beautiful Life.
Customer Reviews:
It's All About Her.......2007-07-31
I ordered this book looking for inspiration during a down time. I didn't find it. Stoddard does nothing but quote Western philosophers and brag about her own experiences living the good life. The book is, literally, all about her. We hear about her trips to various resorts, how she and her husband (an attorney)treat themselves to a hedonistic dessert every day, and about her design business. We hear about what type finial one customer requested and about the maple bed another client fussed over. I have no idea what any of the Aristotle quotes, Barbados trips, ice creams, or design customers have to do with me learning to live the good life, but Stoddard spends the entire book sprinkling mindless rhetoric with these unremarkable bits of news.
If you want to help yourself live the good life, save a few bucks by avoiding this book.
A dose of healthy inspiration!.......2007-07-04
I believe it is so beneficial to read something inspirational every day, and especially before bedtime. This is a great book for inspirational reading.
Alexandra encourages you to "read these fifty essays in any order you choose-just dive in and muse." -from the book
I first thought that's just what I'd do, -being one who doesn't do well with rules and the 'proper' way of doing things. I love books of essays because you get to skip around and read just what you want, when you want. Well, after I read the introduction, which is actually labeled: "An Invitation", I thought I'd go ahead and read a few pages in and then look around in different places in the book and read whatever looked appealing to me. Well, I guess I got sucked into reading it in chronological order because the 'invitation' was so non-demanding that I couldn't help but keep reading it in order!
Once again, as happens so often with me, the right book at the precise time I needed it. Sometimes it's almost scary how that seems to work out. I recently (the same day I got this book!)was faced with making a decision about something that was pretty important to me. I was struggling with how to pick the right one, because isn't that what we all really want when faced with big decisions -To choose the right one? The second chapter is "Be True to All Your Choices" I LOVED that one as it made me feel confident and reassured in the decision I had made. Then, I just kept reading and trying to absorb all the healthy inspiration I just came across.
The nice thing is that you can dive in anywhere in the book and get a lot of great advice no matter what you're reading about. The chapters (essays) are only a couple of pages each. The point is made in a pleasant short and sweet style. There are quotes and references from many inspiring philosophical sources throughout the book.
I very much enjoyed this book and highly recommend it! Really great gift idea!
You are your choices.......2007-05-30
I enjoy Alexandra Stoddards books. This book was also very good. You can pick it up and read a small section at a time which is very nice if you are busy. Its just a short pick me up to get the day going on a positive note.
My favorite author..........2007-03-15
I have every one of Alexandra's books and just got this one and I am loving it....I look forward to all her new books and get some new inspiration from every one. Love all her grace note and tips throughout and all the quotes.I treasure every one of her books and keep them all seperate in a special place.
uplifting read.......2007-02-22
I loved this book.It is about making the most of your life through every day choices and seeing beauty in the simple things. I know most people could benefit from reading this!

Book Description
Articles in Time and US News and World Reports have cited alternative medicine as the fastest-growing area in veterinary care. More than ever, pet owners are demanding facts on using these non-invasive healing methods for their pets. Author Amy Shojai has interviewed top vets across the country, including members of the Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and noted veterinarian Susan Wynn. Pet owners will learn why some vets moved away from mainstream medicine, how the "Healing Instinct" leads animals to their own natural cures, and how alternative therapies actually work. Readers will find tips for treating problems like aggression, fleas, and heart problems with accupressure, homeopathy, nutrition, herbs, exercise and traditional home remedies. Sidebars give "Alternative Success" stories and warning signs for when to call the vet. Now pet owners can be sure their pets have the same practical, holistic healing options as humans do.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-06-17
This book is absolutely awesome! It begins by explaining what alternative medicine is, why pets get sick, and making the switch from allopathic to holistic medicine. It also describes, from A to Z, common ailments and how various vets treat them. There are snippets about how pets treat themselves for certain diseases, when to call the vet, and anecdotes pertaining to the ailment. It also has an extensive alternative healing resource guide.
Natural Healing.......2007-05-26
This book is full of several remedies for many different illnesses, problems, etc...
Highly recommended.
Another winner from Amy.......2005-07-22
Amy has written yet another good book for pet owners. As the trend in natural healing continues, good resources such as this book, The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats, 8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, and The Allergy Solution for Dogs serve as important sources of information for pet owners. Read this book and start learning how you can work with your doctor to keep your pet happy and healthy.
Saving my dog's life.......2005-07-06
A friend knew how my aging dog, Nina, was quite ill and that my family was not planning a second surgery, as she might not survive the operation and, besides, the mass on her liver had grown back in a year. She gave me a copy of this wonderful book, which gives options for health care. Impressed with the book, I ordered many copies and have given a copy to others who love their dogs and cats and want an option to drugs or surgery. Here it is! Nina's had extra time with her family and I have a new respect for natural healing, for pets and for people. You should buy several copies of "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats", so you may share the love.
Couldn't Put it Down................2002-06-25
I am in the process of learning about holistic health care for my 2 lhasa apsos and have recently purchased a few books on the subject. I started one book and set it aside to finish later. I picked up "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats" and couldn't put it down until I was finished! I was so impressed with the layout of such a large amount of information. This book is chock-full of great information and it is presented in a terrific format giving the read first the "The Signs" of the condition, then "The Cause" and the "The Solutions". The solutions can be numerous with the author offering different suggestions and not seeming to be biased towards any one particular holistic remedy. Directions are very clear, concise, and easily understood. Some choices mentioned are natural diet (which seems to be the first and obvious step towards better health care for an animal), natural supplements, herbal remedies, vitamins, aroma-therapy, magnet therapy, accupressure with diagrams shown, and of course, recommendations to call your vet to assist in dosage. Although you feel there is alot to learn, the information is broken down so well, it is easy to retain alot of what you read in the first go around with this book. I am sure I will be picking it up time and time again while working to get my dogs in the best possible health. Also included are some behavior problems. I guarantee you will learn some new and valuable information!
Book Description
From chronic physical pain to deep emotional hurts, we are all, at some level, in need of healing. And healing, writes author Stephen Arterburn, is a choice, although not our choice-it is
God's choice. While that may lead us to understand that healing is out of our hands, there are several things we do or believe that can stand in the way of God's healing in our lives.
Describing ten choices we can make, and the corresponding ten lies that we must reject, Arterburn outlines the plan for opening our lives to God's divine touch. For example, to be receptive to God's healing, we must make the choice to
feel; but we often buy into the lie that we need something to help numb the pain. Likewise, we can choose to
embrace reality; but we often falsely believe that if we act as if nothing is wrong, the problem will go away.
Healing on all levels-spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical-is a miraculous gift from God; but it is a function of our own decisions and beliefs as well. When we make the right choices, and reject the lies, we can find the way to wholeness again.

Healing is a Choice.......2007-09-22
Healing is a Choice is the book and workbook my Bible Study Small Group chose this fall. It is a great study for everyone.... A real work on myself what a diffence my outlook on life is now.
Good book........2007-09-17
This book is about getting over the pain of the past and moving into your future. I recommend it to anyone who has a difficult time moving on.
"Healing is a Choice" helps in healing process.......2007-07-21
My counselor suggested I get the book "Healing is a Choice." I haven't finished it yet but it has already helped me to look at areas of my life and understand why I think and feel the way I do. It also helps me to make better choices in the way I think and feel. Healing is a choice ... and also a process and this book really gets to the heart of the matter.
Excellant Book.......2007-05-30
I really enjoy this book. Stephen Auterburn put his heart into it. I am currently in a ladies group setting at the church I attend. and doing a chapter a week in it and the workbook. It has helped me tremendously as well as other people I know. This a book for anyone who really desires to be healed from the strongholds in their life.
If you really want to heal - READ THIS BOOK.......2007-02-11
My therapist asked me to get this book and I have not been able to put it down. If you are serious about getting help in healing with true Christian guidance, this is the book for you. The book is easy to read, non-itimidating - but very practical and no fluff! It works best if you get the handbook that goes with it and do the exercises after every chapter.
Book Description
Vital information for every college applicant. A former Ivy League admissions officer provides tough and funny advice on coming up with the best essay possible.
Customer Reviews:
Grand Slam.......2007-05-27
For the college bound and everyone else, this concise, well-written primer
holds the potential of dramatically improving your writing skills. Writing
with humor, common sense, economy of language, and a wonderfully entertaining
selection of illustrative essays, Harry has gone a long way to help us reach
that goal. This book by itself of course isn't getting anyone into college
with the possible exception of Harry Bauld. Harry can have his pick, though
I don't imagine returning to college offers much allure for a former athlete
who's lost a step and can no longer bend his unforgiving back.
Harry has done several tours in University Admissions and knows whereof he
speaks: The personal essay is how you tell them who you are, how you distinguish
yourself from the ever-multiplying hordes. When your future at the University
of Choice is being weighed, another asset in the plus column couldn't hurt. I
originally bought the book for my college-bound daughter, read it, loved it,
and in a few weeks will be substituting for Harry (I am also bauld) at a family
seminar in our kitchen. At this juncture my wife and I seem much more interested
than our daughter.
Fantastic!.......2005-10-27
Do not apply to college without reading this book! At last something really different yet supremely helpful too on how to get into the best schools. Bravo Mr. Bauld, from far away Greece!
One of the Best of its Type.......2005-08-31
I teach high school juniors, and we have a unit on writing the college admissions essay. This is one of the best on the subject that I've read. It is short, which will appeal to the teenage reader, and it is humorous, which appealed to me and, I am sure, will appeal to them. My daughter, who is in the midst of writing the application essay, read the book. To me, that is high praise. I recommend it.
NOT FOR GRAD SCHOOL APPS.......2005-02-22
I cannot comment on the utility of this book for applying to undergraduate schools. It may be fabulous. The author does use humor and lots of examples to help. However, I was applying to graduate school, and the essay style is completely different (at least it was for all of my applications).
The graduate essay requires a wealth of specific information to be included. Specific, biographical information including past jobs and relevant experiences. This book discourages such broad essays - the very ones required by most graduate programs (at least in psychology). For grad school applicants, I recommend "How to Write a Winning Personal Statement for Graduate and Professional School" by Richard Stelzer. Not only is it thought-provoking and well written, it includes sections for specific programs (medical, law, business, etc.)
Brilliant and inspiring.......2004-09-21
This is not only the best book on writing the college application essay, but one of the best books about writing, period. With amazingly fresh and funny examples throughout, it shows how bored admissions officers are by the pompous, self-congratulatory essays that students often think they're supposed to write--and how those students can do much, much better. It literally changed my daughter's life, not only because she got into the very competitive college of her choice, but because she now is a sharper, more interesting writer.
Book Description
With so many qualified applicants, competition for college admissions is fiercer than ever. Now you can put yourself ahead of the pack by making your application flawless!
When applying for college, good grades and high standardized test scores are not always enough to guarantee admission. What sets you apart, argues Michele Hernández, is the way you describe yourself in your application. But how do you present yourself with flair, and highlight all your talents, skills, and passions, in just a few pages?
A former assistant director of admissions at Dartmouth College, Dr. Hernández takes you step-by-step through the entire application process, revealing the details that make or break an applicant. From the multitude of short and longer essays to the myriad of charts, lists, and personal data sections, she offers essential advice, useful anecdotes, and vivid examples. Included are:
• A line-by-line look at the common application
• The truth about the essays, with samples of those that made the grade
• The best way to ask for teacher and guidance counselor recommendations
• When to provide colleges with optional essays and peer evaluations
• The ten common myths and misconceptions of the on-campus interview
• The most meaningful academic subjects, work experience, and extracurricular activities to mention
• Early action versus early decision—the trade offs
With this helpful, savvy book, prospective college students—and their parents and counselors—can now vastly improve their chances of getting into the college of their choice.
“Want to scale the Ivy wall? Michele Hernández gives you the tools to do it. This brisk, no-nonsense book is built on inside dope, and Hernández’s experience allows her to challenge conventional admissions thinking.”

Got me Into The Ivy League.......2007-06-20
I used this book when helping me fill out my college application to Cornell University. Cornell recently just had their lowest admission year at 20%. I have only a 1280/2000 on the SAT (710M 570V) and got accepted.
I did everything the book asked me too. Highlighting my advantages and writing descriptions to EC's the exemplified leadership.
This is tailored to the Common Application. However it can definitely be applicable to all applications. I do credit this book with getting me into all the schools I applied to except one. This is the only book I used in the application process. I recommend it.
Michele Hernandez is a goddess.......2007-01-13
this book and her other, A for admission, are really the only ones you need for the college admissions process. Hernandez is thorough and straight forward. her other book is better than this one and some of the stuff in this is repetitive of her first, but i bought this one as a Thank you for all the help i received from her first book.
Geared toward extraordinary students.......2006-12-01
My son is bright but not brilliant - gets A's and B's in Honors courses but hasn't taken any AP or IB courses. He loves to play sports but isn't good enough to be on his high school teams. He tried a few clubs but nothing interested him enough to get involved. He's your average kid who spends his free time with a group of friends, playing pickup games of different sports, video games and poker. He's never had a unique passion or hobby. After reading this book, I became depressed.
Lots of Good Information.......2006-11-11
Much of what is in this book is common sense, but during the busy senior year of high school many students may not pay enough attention to the quality and care they put into their college applications.
From this book, a student can gain an understanding of the college admission process and be able to put his or her best foot forward in the application.
Excellent guide!!!.......2006-09-01
As I was reading the other reviews of this book, I could already see the success this book's advice is giving to high school students, especially to seniors. My mom suggested this book to me, and I could have never imagined what a gift it would turn out to be. Applications are all about how you look on paper, and this book gives any student who follows its suggestions a leg up on the competition, especially in the crucial essay-writing phase. So many college prospects find themselves hampered by essays and struggle with them. Taking suggestions such as these into consideration can certainly make or break an application. I also applied to Princeton University early, and I was also accepted. I truthfully do not know what my life would be like now without this book. Thank you Dr. Hernandez for your insights and solid advice.
