4 out of 5 stars Worth a read..........2007-07-15

I would recommend this book to anybody who needs a survey level knowledge of MMS/SMS. I think it also has value for developers who want to better understand the whole ecosystem and not just their more narrow area of expertise. The quality of the descriptions were excellent, particulary when tables were used to simplify and contrast the relevant messaging profiles and specifications. If I had one complaint, it was that a bit too much detail was provided on the evolution of the standards, rather than using those pages to provide more use cases and detailed flow charts.

5 out of 5 stars The reference book in mobile messaging technologies.......2003-02-07

Don't know what mobile messaging is about ? Read the first chapter and you will feel more comfortable about it ! You're an engineer in mobile communications but you lack expertise in EMS and MMS ? Go for this book !

To put it shortly, Le Bodic's book is first an excellent introduction to mobile messaging and then turns into a great reference manual for all those who work in this promising field. It is a must have !

I particularly liked the way he turned the boring "standardization" stuff into clear figures and tables. Le Bodic made 3GPP litterature accessible and that was quite a challenge !!

5 out of 5 stars Fair good knowledge base for mobile networks.......2005-10-02

A simple, easy yet complete overview of the most important mobile network architectures. Can be used at the university as teaching material or as studying text.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2001-12-12

I found the book to be very informative and well laid out for use as a reference. It has been a life saver in giving a good background on each technology. I have been asked by several of my wireless networking peers about the book and all have found it an excellent reference.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent wireless and mobile networks text book for CS.......2001-09-10

I used this book as the textbook for an undergraduate course in our computer enginnering department last semester. Unlike its alternatives, this book does not require a signal and systems background which makes it the ideal choice for departments such as ours. If you are teaching a group of CS or mixed EE/CS undergraduate students, I strongly recommend the book. In general, the book is easy to read and gives the reader a broad understanding of the topic. Chapters are organized in a manner that the book will be useful for the North American, European or Far Eastern community as examplified in the inclusion of different signalling systems from different regions. Another property of the book which makes it attractive is the inclusion of very hot topics such as VoIP,GPRS,WAP, 3G services, wireless local loop which makes the book timely and complete.

2 out of 5 stars Full of unexplained terms and confusing descriptions.......2001-04-02

The typesetting makes this book unpleasant to read. However, it is the writing style that makes the reading a frustrating experience: The author throws you piles of technical terms without clearly explaining their meaning, or the relation to and difference from related acronyms. It might be a book for you only if you are already a telecom expert. Otherwise, you would probably find yourself in a similar situation to mine--hoping someone can help you with tons of questions you cannot find answers for from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for system aspects of wireless networks.......2001-03-27

It is the personal opinion of the current reviewer that in order to understand the inside and out of wireless networking, you have to know not only the physical layer but also the high layer networking aspects. Some books do cover both physical layer and high layer, however, most of them lack the deepth on either one aspects or both. The reviewer understands the difficult task for both coverages, in the process of developing his new course on wireless networks, he took the following approach: use the best part on physical layer in one book, and switch to another book on high layer. The current reviewer chose this book to cover the high layer wireless networking aspects, this book provides most fundamental elements of wireless networking.

The nice thing about this book is that it is written by two individuals who have been extensively involved in developing the wireless networking technologies. It starts with the most important issue in wireless mobile networks: the mobility management in the general setting, detailing what call processes are involved, how handoff strategies are designed, how channel assignments affect the performance, how the control signaling among the commuincations entities are accomplished (IS-41 and GSM MAP). Then the authors shift their focus on the specific wireless systems: PACS, CDPD, GSM, GPRS and other applications. In distinction to other books, this book attempts to present the main ideas, and is a very good book for those who really want to know what is going on in wireless networking area, yet do not have time to figure out (do not care about) the details. It is also very excellent reference book for those technical experts who want to broad their horizon. The current reviewer finds the book very useful in his research when he wants to clear some doubts on certain topics.

If you need simulation hints this is the book. I really recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars Splendid.......2002-07-01

This book deserves my 5 stars due to its tremendous effort to illustrate how complex digital communications algorithms are actually put into "code" for applied research. Any newcomer to mobile communications will benefit extensively from reading and using this book. For practicing researchers and engineers, it provides a refreshing and often insightful revision of basic concepts, as well as exposure of newer technology such as OFDM and software radio.

I recommend this book to all digital communications engineers.

5 out of 5 stars a good start for communications simulation.......2002-05-31

Harada & Prasad provide a very good working-level
understanding of how to simulate communication systems
using MATLAB. This book will appeal to advanced
      undergraduate and beginning graduate electrical
engineers. It emphasizes nuts&bolts simulation, and
assumes a good working knowledge of communication
system analysis. Professionals who use MATLAB to
analyze communication systems for a living will find
the coverage fairly basic - even shallow - but the
authors well meet their goal of giving beginners a
better leg up on the process. Including their MATLAB
source code on a CD with the book may make the purchase
      worthwhile all by itself.

      3 out of 5 stars The basics.......2002-03-13

If you do not have any technical experience in wireless and you are looking to get a grasp on the basic technology, applications, and market, I would recommend this book. Sit down read it through quickly then move on. If you have moderate wireless experience and are trying to get caught up on 2.5G and 3G technology and standards, this is NOT the book.

Beyond this point, I found that Bates repeated the same information time and time again without any new twist. I can not say that I will forget what he had to say, but he did not enrich the information. He also prognosticates based upon inspiration without any facts. After the latest "hockey stick market" bust, I would be careful basing any demand and penetration projections on historical information.

Finally, do not use the table of contents as an indicator of the depth of this book (like I did).

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for technical and non-technical people........2002-02-19

This book covers broad range of wireless topics in a handbook
format. Naturally there is no deep analysis of any topic and
no mathematics inside. The book is not 500 pages but only 384
pages. Some parts of the book and some figures directly come
from the author's another famous book named "Broadband
Telecommunications Handbook" by the same publisher.

I recommend this book for technical people to refresh their
knowledge and to have updated information on today's wireless
technologies. This book would be suitable also for non-technical
people in telecom field to have a general overview. There are
some errors in the book as usual but can be ignored. Some
descriptions are not cristal clear like the one on CDMA and
could have been better. It is an easy reading good book after
all and wellcomes to any technical library.

      2 out of 5 stars ATROCIOUS!.......2004-06-30

#1 I have visual studio .net 2003 so don't waste my time telling me about hardcoding templates and device specific stuff before you go to the easier way. Please go into the details of the code AFTER the easier way.
#2 The entire chapter on list controls and onwards does NOT make sense and is really hard to understand. I have used j2ee and .net and I should not be having so much trouble understanding your work.
#3 please jump into the book rather than why use .net mobile
#4 Templates chapter is arduous to read.
#5 Openwave sdk 6.2 does not work with examples had to read in chapter 8 that you download updates from MS website before the examples work.
#6 don't take till chapter 11 and page 400 to tell me how to connect to the database! don't waste my time with arrays and list controls as "data collections" before you get to db connectivity etc. the entire lists chapters could have been written better.

Is this is a cultural gap? I went through the GCSE O Levels etc. and I KNOW that British authors and British textbooks are awesome , even better than their american counterparts but for this subject I will have to resort to SAMS books to get the details.

      2 out of 5 stars coolXterior.......2003-06-18

Although the title says .Net "Applications", it fails to
mention they are "Web" applications, meaning ASP.Net & WML Pages! Good thing I got this book from my U's library rather
than wasting my money on it. I was looking for "apps" that run
on mobile platforms, not "apps that run in a IE window"
on mobile platforms! Although, it has good descriptions
of resources like the various dev toolkits from different cell
phone vendors, there's not much else.

      4 out of 5 stars Well Written.......2002-06-30

I find the previous review completely in error.

While I'm only 5 chapters into the book, I'm finding it well organized and well written. Additionally, I'm working the examples and I'm finding that the "Mobile Internet Toolkit" technology works well over a variety of device emulators.

Having said this, you must also understand that I am a Microsoft basher, although my mind is open to the .Net technologies.

The only criticism that I have so far is that the examples are tending to be very buggy. This is not a problem for me as I learn lots by fixing them, but some readers will find this frustrating.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Need the Marketing Speak.......2002-06-28

To tell the truth, I didn't read the whole book. I was turned off by the market speak right off the bat in chapter one. There's too many other books out there to explore, so please don't waste my time telling me how good .Net technology is; tell me how to use it. If your looking for a good book on Pocket PC programming, check out "Pocket PC, Handheld PC Developer's Guide with Microsoft Embedded Visual Basic". There's a lot of good, concise info in that book.
As a side note, I'm not a Microsoft basher. I make my bread and butter working with their products. I'm just sick of getting sales pitches everwhere I look.

5 out of 5 stars Just discovered this.........2002-12-04

An interesting find - antennas and propagation from the point of view of the practioner, rather than a rehash of academic generalities.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique collection, some info single sourced..........2002-11-20

Its not quite organized like a college text, but flows like the radio system design itself. From a base, rippling through a cluttered city, to a user, a person. This is an "only source" for the "radio model" of man, detailed if somewhat belabored, but available no where else. At this date [2002] perhaps pagers and paging are not timeless, but the udates from the original edition do touch on wireless telephony -- and always timeless: radios near the body. Worth a 5* for the unique content!

1 out of 5 stars This book is terrible.......2001-02-20

As a graduate student I was fortunate enough to fully experience this book in all its terrible glory. The book is FULL of errors and if you attempt the problems you will realize this. Moreover the conceptual content was very insufficient. Anyone who doesn't already know a lot about this subject, cannot hope this book will explain anything. The instructor told me that even the solution manual had errors. This is the worst textbook I have ever owned.

5 out of 5 stars Personal communications made easy by Siwiak.......1999-02-09

The book is logically organized and well suited to the needs who want to be informed in areas of multipath propagation and antennas as they apply to modern personal communications. "Radiowave Propagation and Antennas for Personal Communications" is thorough and comprehensive enough to meet the needs of experienced practitioners, yet detailed and lucid enough to serve as a textbook for graduate students.

4 out of 5 stars Practical design information rarely found in a single book.......1998-12-01

Some errors not withstanding, a book that will most certainly benefit a practicing engineer! All those who have not studied antennas in their course work, yet need to specify, test and deploy; all those who will never see an antenna, but must understand the path-loss mechanism in a fading environment will find it an invaluable resource. It describes the cellular/PCS propagation phenomena in down to earth terms, and ties them neatly to the handset/base-station requirements.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent Book on IS-41.......2000-06-20

I just read the authentication chapter, and I just left behind all my doubts about authentication. Anyway not just the Auth Chapter is excelent but the whole book.

5 out of 5 stars The book to get for IS-41.......2000-05-18

Highly recommended book for IS-41... the networking standard between AMPS, TDMA and CDMA switches, HLR and VLRs. I'm relieved there's a book out there which explains everything in layman's term, yet goes through enough details to give a great grasp of the important concepts of mobile networking.

The authors give a great background of mobile telecommunications, the making of the IS-41 standard, mobility management, call processing (and most of the important feature procesing), and SMS. Concepts like authentication and mobile roaming are covered quite well.

The basic format of each section remains the same, so it's easy to follow. If you really want the details, like the IS-41 parameters, it's not in this book, but that's when you go to the actual standards document!

Kudos to Michael Gallagher and Randall Snyder for an awesome book!

5 out of 5 stars Excelente libro, fácil de comprender........1999-04-13

Un excelente libro del protocolo IS-41, gradual en su presentación. No entra al detalle de los bytes. Mantiene un muy buen nivel, con claros ejemplos. He preparado un buen curso de este protocolo a partir de este y otros libros

      5 out of 5 stars Great IS-41 Book.......1999-01-06

This is a great IS-41 book. It is very instructional(going over the IS-41 protcol) and also as a reference(to view call flows for different features). This is a must for anyone involved with IS-41.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for wireless communication network professionals.......1998-10-15

The book is an easily understood reference for anyone that works with SS7 and ANSI-41. The book is packed will drawings and pratical examples. It is detailed enough that most people could avoid buying the >$1000 ANSI publication
