"Mobile Messaging Technologies and Services provides an in-depth description of existing and forthcoming messaging services and underlying technologies. The Short Message Service (SMS) has been a tremendous success in the messaging roadmap and the recently introduced Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS), an application-level extension of SMS, is expected to offer a smooth transition to the forthcoming Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). Identified as the most important service for 3GPP, MMS provides the potential for the realization of future-proof services by meeting the requirements of various business models as the Internet and the mobile telecommunications environment merges. Person-to-person messaging constitutes the principal reason for the introduction of MMS to the market and it will also provide the opportunity to carry out user trials in the machine-to-person scenarios. In this context, value-added service providers will take advantage of MMS to promote multimedia contents to a wide range of mobile devices (location-based services, mobile commerce, online photo albums, etc.). The provision of MMS value-added services will undoubtedly offer appealing business opportunities for content providers and service developers. Explains and illustrates existing services including the Short Message Service (SMS) and the Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) Offers a complete description of the forthcoming Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) Illustrates the most common examples of messaging applications usage and covers advanced topics for operators involved in the deployment and configuration of mobile messaging systems Describes the processes involved in standardizing telecommunications services and technologies (3GPP, WAP Forum, IETF and W3C) This volume represents a stimulating practical reference book for operators, content providers, manufacturers and developers of messaging applications and will also appeal to researchers and students. Worth a read..........2007-07-15
The reference book in mobile messaging technologies.......2003-02-07
To put it shortly, Le Bodic's book is first an excellent introduction to mobile messaging and then turns into a great reference manual for all those who work in this promising field. It is a must have !
I particularly liked the way he turned the boring "standardization" stuff into clear figures and tables. Le Bodic made 3GPP litterature accessible and that was quite a challenge !!

Fair good knowledge base for mobile networks.......2005-10-02
Excellent Resource.......2001-12-12
An excellent wireless and mobile networks text book for CS.......2001-09-10
Full of unexplained terms and confusing descriptions.......2001-04-02
Excellent book for system aspects of wireless networks.......2001-03-27
The nice thing about this book is that it is written by two individuals who have been extensively involved in developing the wireless networking technologies. It starts with the most important issue in wireless mobile networks: the mobility management in the general setting, detailing what call processes are involved, how handoff strategies are designed, how channel assignments affect the performance, how the control signaling among the commuincations entities are accomplished (IS-41 and GSM MAP). Then the authors shift their focus on the specific wireless systems: PACS, CDPD, GSM, GPRS and other applications. In distinction to other books, this book attempts to present the main ideas, and is a very good book for those who really want to know what is going on in wireless networking area, yet do not have time to figure out (do not care about) the details. It is also very excellent reference book for those technical experts who want to broad their horizon. The current reviewer finds the book very useful in his research when he wants to clear some doubts on certain topics.

Wireless Ad Hoc Networking: Personal-Area, Local-Area, and the Sensory-Area Networks (Wireless Networks and Mobile Communications)
Manufacturer: AUERBACH ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0849392543 |
Book Description
The rapid progress of mobile, wireless communication and embedded micro-sensing MEMS technologies has brought about the rise of pervasive computing. Wireless local-area networks (WLANs) and wireless personal-area networks (WPANs) are now common tools for many people, and it is predicted that wearable sensor networks will greatly improve everyday life as we know it. By integrating these technologies into a pervasive system, we can access information and use computing resources anytime, anywhere, and with any device. Wireless Ad Hoc Networking: Personal-Area, Local-Area, and the Sensory-Area Networks covers these key technologies used in wireless ad hoc networks. The book is divided into three parts, each providing self-contained chapters written by international experts. Topics include networking architectures and protocols, cross-layer architectures, localization and location tracking, time synchronization, QoS and real-time, security and dependability, applications, modeling and performance evaluation, implementation and experience, and much more. The book is novel in its single source presentation of ad hoc networking and related key technologies and applications over the platforms of personal area, sensory area, and local area networks. It is a valuable resource for those who work in or are interested in learning about the pervasive computing environment.

Wireless Broadband Handbook
Regis "Bud" J. Bates Manufacturer: McGraw-Hill Professional ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0071371613 |
Book Description
Translate broadband wireless mumbo-jumbo into clear business termsNo guide tackles and clarifies the chaotic acronym-ridden world of broadband wireless better than Wireless Broadband Handbook. Best-selling telecom author Regis "Bud" Bates has the formula to give you the "instant expertise" you need to compete and win in this rapidly advancing area. He asks the logical, business-based questions that are important to you about this hot new technology, and he provides the answers-- minus the techspeak. You’ll find product photos and descriptions and analysis of key systems and options for profitable business, technical, and career decision making. You get lucid information on:
* Applications and implementations of technologies
* Regulatory and standards developments
* Generic pricing and business models
* LMDS/MMDS/WAP/GPRS
* Wireless IP
* GSM around the world
* What’s going on with WAP
* What changes to expect from 3G (and why it is sometimes called UMTS)
Customer Reviews:
The basics.......2002-03-13
Beyond this point, I found that Bates repeated the same information time and time again without any new twist. I can not say that I will forget what he had to say, but he did not enrich the information. He also prognosticates based upon inspiration without any facts. After the latest "hockey stick market" bust, I would be careful basing any demand and penetration projections on historical information.
Finally, do not use the table of contents as an indicator of the depth of this book (like I did).
Recommended for technical and non-technical people........2002-02-19
I recommend this book for technical people to refresh their
knowledge and to have updated information on today's wireless
technologies. This book would be suitable also for non-technical
people in telecom field to have a general overview. There are
some errors in the book as usual but can be ignored. Some
descriptions are not cristal clear like the one on CDMA and
could have been better. It is an easy reading good book after
all and wellcomes to any technical library.

ATROCIOUS!.......2004-06-30
Is this is a cultural gap? I went through the GCSE O Levels etc. and I KNOW that British authors and British textbooks are awesome , even better than their american counterparts but for this subject I will have to resort to SAMS books to get the details.

Well Written.......2002-06-30
While I'm only 5 chapters into the book, I'm finding it well organized and well written. Additionally, I'm working the examples and I'm finding that the "Mobile Internet Toolkit" technology works well over a variety of device emulators.
Having said this, you must also understand that I am a Microsoft basher, although my mind is open to the .Net technologies.
The only criticism that I have so far is that the examples are tending to be very buggy. This is not a problem for me as I learn lots by fixing them, but some readers will find this frustrating.

The book to get for IS-41.......2000-05-18
The authors give a great background of mobile telecommunications, the making of the IS-41 standard, mobility management, call processing (and most of the important feature procesing), and SMS. Concepts like authentication and mobile roaming are covered quite well.
The basic format of each section remains the same, so it's easy to follow. If you really want the details, like the IS-41 parameters, it's not in this book, but that's when you go to the actual standards document!
Kudos to Michael Gallagher and Randall Snyder for an awesome book!
