1 out of 5 stars No Code Included With Purchse Of "New" Text From Amazon.......2007-08-30

Potential Buyers,

If you are a student who is taking an accounting course and your instructor requires you to use the accompanying Wiley Plus website, do not expect to get a Wiley Plus, registration code with this product.

I purchased the text "new" directly from Amazon for an accounting class I am taking and I assumed that I would recieve the registration code I needed; I assumed wrong as there was no registration code included with my book.

If you do need the code for class and you do choose to buy this book from Amazon, you'll be best off buying the cheapest, used edition and going to the Wiley Plus site directly to get a standard registration code for around $60 dollars. Of Course keep in mind shipping costs may eat up any savings you'd get buying from Amazon in the first place!

The 1 star review actually reflects my dissatisfaction with the description of this product on Amazon's site, and not the quality of the text.

Happy Shopping!

4 out of 5 stars accounting.......2007-07-17

the book arrived a little later than i expected; but, it's a very helpful book if you want to go for accounting. the book's website is extremely useful.

4 out of 5 stars Good for its purpose -- learning.......2007-05-28

The authors have put together a text that is long on examples. It might seem redundant to some, but I think this is the right way to teach a process discipline like accounting.

Much of the book is problem sets, in fact.

Let's see, the chapters begin with study objectives. Then there are highlighted "key points." Then at the end of each lesson, there are demonstration problems, self-study questions, questions, a set of brief exercises, exercises, then problem sets A and B.

I bought the 3rd edition, although the 4th is now available. The fourth edition has different problems in the first two chapters. In many instances, only the names of the company and an occasional number are different. It would matter if you are taking this for a class where the homework is graded. If your purpose is to learn the principles that underly financial accounting, though, you are as well served by the 3rd edition.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Non-Finance Managers.......2007-02-24

This was a textbook used in my Managerial Finance class. It was easy to understand, aside from just a few concepts not explained as clearly as I would've liked. My background is engineering, however, I learned a great deal from this book. Great job Kimmel.

5 out of 5 stars simple and easy understanding.......2007-01-05

the book provides examples and graphs to help demonstrate the text.

it has a lot of details and online reviews if u want to learn more and deeper

4 out of 5 stars Nice Handbook for Accounting students.......2007-02-20

The book is a nice handbook for students majoring in Finance and Accounting students. It has all the necessary explanations of the formulas along with good examples. As a person with some exposure to Finance and Accounting,I found the book to be extremely useful for students and pros in this field.

5 out of 5 stars Effective refresher ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07

I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!

5 out of 5 stars Not just for students.......2002-05-28

This is a reprint of "McGraw-Hill Pocket Guide to Business Finance: 201 Decision-Making Tools for Managers" with a single difference. The now out-or-print book came with a runtime version of MathCAD and formulas for using each of the tools, while this new version does not. Also, don't let the title fool you - this book is as useful to working professionals as it is to students.

The 201 tools contained in this small, highly useful book range from Acid Test (doing a quick ratio of financials) to Z-Scores. Each tool is listed alphabetically, its use explained, and instructions on how to use it is provided. What I particularly liked is the worked examples that accompany each tool.

As an IT consultant who specializes in service delivery this book is not one I would normally include in my professional library. I was introduced to it when a colleague and I were writing a white paper on recovery management. We were searching for a way to link business imperatives to justification for investment in recovery strategies. We found one piece of the puzzle in this book - the Altman Z-Score. This tool predicts whether or not a company is likely to enter into bankruptcy within one or two years. This led to the development of a copyrighted model that addressed survival level objectives, and also became a key part of the Tarrani-Zarate Information Technologies Management Model. All this from a single entry in a small book!

Aside from discovering a relatively obscure, but important, tool I also found other useful tools in this book. Because I am not a business consultant or financial expert the tools were like a cram course in financial management for non-financial people. For example, I was able to apply some of the tools to personal financial matters - the real costs of a loan become quickly apparent when you compute them. I was also able to employ some of the tools to conduct realistic cost/benefit analyses, examine trade-offs supporting approaches to projects, etc. In this respect this small book has significantly improved my professional skills and has inspired me to read other books on financial management.

I strongly recommend this book - collection of tools really - to anyone who deals with finance, anyone who has P&L responsibilities, and business and IT consultants. The latter group will find this book to be invaluable for developing proposals, deliverables and project plans that add value.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2002-01-12

This book saved me through four accounting courses three finance courses and two real estate courses. It is well organized and easy to locate any formula that is needed.

4 out of 5 stars Good but..........2007-03-26

When I placed the order for this book I was looking for the latest edition of this title but in paperback (to cut cost) but unfortunately I rushed in my order and did not notice the word "Working papers" on the cover. When I received the book i was shocked to see it was only a 700+ pages book with only empty tables and place to answer the exercises which were listed in the main text book!!!
so I returned the book the same day! yet I am rating the book 4 star because it looked like a good help and a handy book for collage students to answer the exercises and practice. The tables were well organized and clear.

3 out of 5 stars Handbook for Managers, not investors.......2005-10-22

Although helpful and well written, the book appears more appropriate for executives or managers of operating companies that may be faced with bankruptcy prospects. A good overview of how the process unfolds, players, objectives, legal issues, and procedures is provided. Managers at a financially distressed operation typically carry a different toolbox of experience and skills, and therefore, this book would be well worth the introduction to the topic.

However, for investors this book is somewhat superficial and lacks the roll-up-your-sleeves education neccessary for investing. In most cases, senior management is sacked because creditors understandably have little confidence in those who may have mismanaged or were responsible for the business's failure in the first place. Thus, the audience that I presumed above may not be appropriate nor the majority of individuals who surface after a Plan.

For investors or external parties, I urge you to consider:
"Distressed Debt Analysis: Strategies for Speculative Investors" by Stephen G. Moyer. It is more expensive, but its a much better book on this topic. Moyer is a stronger writer and seems to be more experienced in the matter than G. Newton. Both books do not include the 2005 Bankruptcy Code reforms, so you may wish to brush up on that separately.

4 out of 5 stars Very practical reference, "thin" on theory and case studies.......2004-01-24

Very useful and convenient reference guide for restructuring bankers / distressed debt investors. Probably too generic for experienced bankruptcy attorneys. The text and examples are efficiently presented and the author does a superb job of distilling the bankruptcy code into an easy-to-read format. The chapter on valuation is nothing more than the common stuff you read in any corporate finance book. A case study and a more extensive discussion on bankruptcy term sheets and negotiation tactics would have made this book more praiseworthy.

    Book Description

Now in its Third Edition, Financial Accounting by Kimmel, Weygandt, and Kieso has been tested and approved in the classroom. This best-selling text has helped students hit the road with a practical set of tools, and the confidence they need to use those tools effectively in making business decisions.

Financial Accounting provides students with an understanding of those concepts that are fundamental to the use of accounting. Starting with a "macro" view of accounting information, the authors present real financial statements and establish how a financial statement communicates the financing, investing, and operating activities of a business to users of accounting information. They motivate students by grounding the discussion in the real world, showing them the relevance of the topics covered to their future career.

The authors identify a finite set of tools necessary to make business decisions based on financial information: The Decision Toolkit. This toolkit is consistently re-introduced throughout the text, logically sequenced to take full advantage of the tools presented in earlier chapters, and summarized in the final chapter. This thorough integration of the use of financial statements for decision-making makes this one of the most user-oriented texts available today.

            --Nancy Snow, University of Toledo

"The textbook is well written with good examples and homework problems. This book is easy to understand, but is rigorous in its coverage of accounting issues."
--Paul Brazina, La Salle University, Philadelphia

"Best presentation of material in the industry. In addition, Financial, Managerial and Intermediate all flow together for greater coverage and comprehension."
            --Vince Enslein, Clinton Community College
