5 out of 5 stars Great for Reference and Fundamental Overview. .......2006-02-25

I've been mixing and Recording music for 15 years and have done a number of major motion pictures now, but always felt slightly in the dark regarding some of the technical jargon and workflow for Film and TV post production. This book is clear, to the point, easy to read, and a constant source of reference for me as more and more work i do is for Film and TV. As someone who has had a lot of experience in audio, I really appreciate that the delivery of detail is not dummied down, but that it's nor over explained either. This is a great launchpad for people needing to grasp a fundamental overview of the whole process. It should be required reading for anyone who considers themselves a TV or Film or Commecial producer.

5 out of 5 stars Definate key text for students of sound and film.......2005-11-11

This is the book I wanted to write! There are many books out there around this subject, but this text is comprhensive AND comprehensible! It covers every area of the post production process ( and a good deal of giudance for the recording of production sound too) in exactly the amount of detail that is needed, with each technical topic supported by useful and informative technique and advice.
The chapters on editing sound give many valuable pointers that will help anyone who is learniung this craft to develop a strong skills base, with really useful practical tips. There is no important technical information missing; all the standards and formats are addressed and explained in easy to read language, so that you're not left with an incomplete picture, and it's up to date with contemporary systems such as Windows XP and Mac OSX, hard disk recording and digital TV, DVD, diffusion systems for broadcast (surround) and more.
So to sum up, this is a really good read, and worth having as a reference book for anyone studying or working in this field who wants to get a a good understanding of the entire process of audio post, and I would also recommend it to film makers as well, as it is a good read and will inform and enlighten.
I have included it my essential reading list for students on our film and sound design courses.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book.......2005-04-11

A modern, up to date and informative guide to audio post production techniques used in todays complex industry.

Hilary describes each step of the audio post production process, from a locked picture edit, through to final mixing and deliverables.

Chapters on editing give the reader a unique insight into how a sountrack is created and prepared for the mix, using techniques that Hilary has acquired from working on many feature films and television programmes.

A must have book for anyone wanting to gain knowledge and understand sound in the modern film and television industry.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars rich metadata inclusion.......2006-06-06

MXF is an ambitious idea that has been long overdue in the film and audio industries. It harks to the common problem of how to compress and store films, and do so digitally. There are tremendous advantages in doing so, including the ability to analyse and manipulate such films with ever more powerful software. The enduring problem has been various different compression and storage standards.

The authors describe how an industry wide effort has produced MXF. It certainly took long enough; 5 years! But perhaps the deal was worth the wait. Thumbing through the book, you can see that provision has been made for very flexible inclusion of metadata. A rich format that permits sophisticated file searching based on that metadata.

Plus, there is aid for transitioning between current encodings and MXF. The aim is clearly for MXF to be a global standard.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Clear, precise introduction to media asset management.......2007-02-20

At first glance, this book resembles a survey course on how to use descriptive metadata to manage digital television assets. Touching on all the basics of metadata from identifiers to schemas to preservation, this comprehensive overview is a must for anyone tasked with implementing a digital asset management project. It offers an introduction to all the emerging standards from the library sciences to industry organizations along with sample metadata sets from several repositories (CNN, UCLA Film and Television Archive to name two).

The real value of this book, however, is in the collaborative efforts of the authors which created this unified whole. This collaboration mirrors the future business partnerships that must solidify in order to realize the promise and potential of metadata: the partnership between engineers, library science/information architects and archivists. As represented by Mike Cox, Linda Tadic and Ellen Mulder, this clearly articulated book itemizes each component necessary to manage the digital representation of a fundamentally collaborative medium.

3 out of 5 stars Good information on an obscure issue.......2006-11-10

If you are trying to justify a digital asset management system to your boss, you will need all the help you can get. If you are trying to rationalize the new system to your coworkers, you will need this book (and much more). If you don't know anything about metadata in the creative arts, this book is a decent place to start. It is practical education and the information is generally accessible. the topic gets esoteric quickly, though; DAM is a narrow field of database development and using DAM for television systems adds another level of specialization.
The authors present valuable lessons in the fundamentals of DAM usage, benefits from real world applications of DAM, metadata creation and entry, and descriptions of existing controlled vocabulary systems and taxonomy structures. However, this is only one piece of the metadata and digital asset management puzzle. You will need much more information and research to design, purchase and build a system that works in your facility or company.
What's missing? In-dpeth product evaluations and suggestions on how to select a decent solution. However, this really is not a not a fault of the work; the marketplace for DAM is not standing still so it's impossible to include timely information.

Check out Peter Krogh's "The DAM Bok" and Jens Jacobsen (et al) "Implementing a Digital Asset Management System for animation computer graphics and Web development." There are thousands of white papaers on the Web.

          Book Description

This lively introduction to television documentaries spotlights their history, production and reception, principal forms and functions and their adaptation to today’s programming needs. What impact has television's growing commercialisation had on the type of documentary broadcast? What has led to the introduction of an increasing number of hybridised forms? These questions are addressed within an examination of the role of institutions, documentary’s 'special relationship' with the real, and an insight into how audiences interpret the documentaries they view. Confronting reality has been written with the requirements of media studies students in mind, yet it is a must for everyone concerned with recording reality in the fast-changing world of television today.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This Intro to Doc Film is superbly researched and relevant.......2003-06-11

This introduction is direct, understandable by the early student, global in its outlook and very strong on context and globality. Its ENTHUSIASTIC ! Not dust dry. Kochberg had a real way with cutting to the point and leting academic buzz words go ... we use this book in conjunction with Nelmes' Intro to Film Studies, now in edition 3rd at June 2003. In the latter Kochberg contributes the critical part 01 and sets the standard for the rest. Well done - this reflects Kochberg's lecture style and infectious enthusiasm.
