3 out of 5 stars Unfortunately badly written, but absolutely necessary.......2007-10-01

This book is absolutely mandatory to get a PMP certification, which is nearly a mandatory requirement for being a project manager. These days, it is difficult to get a PM job without this certification. And the only way to get it is by knowing this book from cover to cover no matter how dry and 'dictionary-like' it is.

That being said, it is not *that* bad. It is better than, for example, the CMMI 1.2 book. What is missing is why these practices are the "best practices" and why you would implement them - what the benefits would be. Also missing is any kind of comprehensible memorable writing style.

You're not going to pass the certification test by reading this book, but you can't pass without it either.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-09-28

A very good book for PMs, since it is from PMI, they have covered most aspects of PM, however, no that much in detail, so not that good for early career PMs.

5 out of 5 stars Very good Book - - Un libro muy bueno, se los recomiendo........2007-09-24

This is a very good book, you should read it if you want to know more about project management.
Es un libro muy bueno, se los recomiendo si estan interesados en la administracion de proyectos.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book!!!.......2007-09-24

I really, really wish I would have read through the amazon reviews before buying this book. It looks like a good idea and that it will an informative read. It's a piece of summary junk that provides no real value whatsoever.

Instead of actually trying to teach concepts in detail, the objective of this book appears to be the mere identification of concepts. If you're content learning about the concepts that exist, maybe this book is for you. If you want to actually know how things work and be able to do them yourself, go elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Extensive.......2007-09-24

This book is pretty much the field manual. I had been working as a project manager for two years and learned a great deal just from the first few chapters of the book. Definately worth the investment.

    Book Description

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)- 2000 Edition is your basic reference and the world's de facto standard for the project management profession. It was designated an American National Standard (ANSI/PMI 99-001-2000) by the American National Standards Institute in March 2001.

The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) is an inclusive term that describes the sum of knowledge within the profession of project management. The PMBOK® Guide identifies and describes the subset of principles and practices within the PMBOK® that are generally accepted and applicable to most projects most of the time. The guide also provides a common lexicon for talking about project management. Project management is a relatively young profession, and while there is substantial commonality around what is done, there is relatively little commonality in the terms used. An extensive glossary further aids in standardizing definitions of the most important concepts, terms, and phrases.

The Project Management Institute (PMI®) uses the PMBOK® Guide as one of the references for the Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification Examination. Major revisions and expansions of this edition include:

    • Aligned newly added processes, tools, and techniques with the five project processes and nine knowledge areas. For example, reserve time, variance analysis, and activity attributes were added to Chapter 6 (Project Time Management); estimating publications and earned value were added to Chapter 7 (Project Cost Management); and project reports, project presentations, and project closure were added to Chapter 10 (Project Communications Management).

    • Added a section in Chapter 2 to acknowledge the role of the Project Office; expanded the treatment of earned value management in Chapter 4 and Chapter 10; and added a brief discussion of the Theory of Constraints in Chapter 6.

    • Expanded Chapter 11 (Project Risk Management) to include six processes instead of the previous four: Risk Management Planning, Risk Identification, Risk Assessment, Risk Quantification, Risk Response Planning, and Risk Monitoring and Control.

    • Strengthened the linkage between organizational strategy and project management throughout.

The PMBOK® Guide is one of those indispensable tools that you will want at your fingertips, both at work and in your home office. Selected as a suggested resource for CAPM®, CAQ® Automotive Product Development, CAQ Capital Projects, CAQ Information Technology Systems, CAQ Information Technology Networking, and CAQ Project Management Office exam preparation.

3 out of 5 stars Outdated as of September 2005.......2005-10-05

I feel that it is important to mention that I have had little project management experience. I purchased the CD-ROM version of this book in preparation to take the CAPM exam given by PMI. The 2000 version of the PMBOK guide is obsolete as of September 2005. The PMI exams are now based on the Third edition of this guide.

I found this book to be as exciting to read as the Yellow Pages, though I will admit that if I were an experienced project manager, I would find the book much better reading. The book has a simple layout, with three sections.

The first section is on project management framework. This section is comprised of three chapters that discuss appropriate definitions, parts of a project, and processes used in project management.

The second section is the main portion of the book. Section 2 covers the project management knowledge area. Comprised of 9 chapters, each chapter covers a knowledge area. These knowledge areas are Project Integration Management, Project Scope Management, Project Time Management, Project Cost Management, Project Quality Management, Project Human Resources Management, Project Risk Management, and Project Procurement Management.

The final section is a series of appendices that I did not find applicable to the passing the PMP or CAPM exam.

Unfortunately, everything that is on the certification exams is not in this book. While the PMBOK creates an excellent framework for the proper techniques to use in project management, this book alone is not sufficient to pass the certification exams. I would highly recommend the "PMP Exam Prep by Rita Mulcahy" if you are going to take either of the certification exams.

This book was an incredibly painful read. The information provided is in a very uninteresting list format similar to an outline used to write speeches and papers. If you are new to the world of project management and are looking for a guide, while this book is necessary to manage projects effectively, there are probably better books to get started with. I would recommend this book to experienced project managers or people going for the PMP or CAPM certifications.

3 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, 2000 Edition.......2005-09-16

The "official" body of knowledge from PMI is shrinking, rather than growing. Older editions of the PMBOK include more substance and may be useful in preparing for your PMP certification exam. However, don't rely on the PMBok alone. The exam touches many topics not included in this, or older versions.

5 out of 5 stars Do not panic.......2005-07-19

For those new to this book it is pretty much the project manager's bible in the same sense that "The C Programming Language" by Brian W Kernighan, Dennis M. Ritchie is to programming. That is to say this is the one to get off the ground with. It is also the basis of the PMP (Project Management Professional) test given by the PMI® (Project Management Institute.)

It comes in both paper, and CD-ROM using Adobe Reader. I have seen the paper book but bought the CD version it includes a tutorial on how to use the CD-ROM media. The media is a mater of preference. There are 425 pages and a good index and references.

Be aware that there are earlier versions. At the time of this review this is the latest version; however as The Body of Knowledge advances so will the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide ®.) There for it is advisable for people that have read the earlier version to now read this version as a few terms have changed and some emphases have shifted.

As with any institutional book this is a good starting place or a solid foundation. However it may not cover concentrating on the waterfall concept of project management many instances such as the Unified method among others. They also do not take in many external influences as FDA requirements. And it is up to the reader to reconcile the two institutions.

Some changes to the Third Edition:

    * Differences in Project life cycle and product life cycle are better explained.

    * The number of process changed from 39 to 44.

    * A greater emphasis is placed on the importance of Process Groups.

    * Chapter three "Project Management Process for a Project" is moved and renamed "The Standard for Project Management of a Project."

    * The project management processes now show process integration.

5 out of 5 stars Good for the PMP exam until September 2005.......2005-06-01

There is not much to say about the PMBOK's content. It was the de facto standard for project management from 2000 to 2004. The content is simply excellent.

If you intend to take the PMP exam before September 2005, you simply must buy it. If you intend to take the test after that date, though, you should buy the 2004 version.

This is book not for amateurs. If you have no experience whatsoever or knowledge of project management, this will not be an easy reading.

4 out of 5 stars Essential reference fo PMP.......2004-06-13

This book is a good reference and should be used as a reference book. You need to know the content of this book to pass the PMP. However, don't use thie book at the only source of study. Get a copy of Andy Crowe's "The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try" and "The Ultimate PMP Study Aid" (from ebay).

By the way, when your join the PMI memnbership, they will send a CDROM verson of the book free.

    3 out of 5 stars A beginner's view of the PMBoK.......2001-10-30

This book is a useful textbook; it certainly is not light reading and I would not recommend it to anyone wanting a quick overview of Project Management in order to impress their boss.

It does provide a foundation for further study and when read thoroughly and methodically, as a textbook should be, it gives a reasonable understanding of the process of Project Management.

It is not really suitable for anyone who does not have a reasonable grounding in the the principles and practices of general management, particularly people-related issues.

3 out of 5 stars A must for future PMPs..........2001-10-11

If you are studying for the PMP exam, this book is a must read. Although some feel that if they have several years of project management experience they shouldn't have to read the book - I disagree. PMI has the goal to provide consistency in project management methodology and terminology. It is very important to read the book and understand PMI's philosophy and terminology for project management.

This book provide a good overview of the PMI project management methodology - for each knowledge area the book provides the various steps along with the inputs, tools and outputs. For people studying for the PMP...this is only one source for studying. The exam requires you to interpret the PMBOK and have a broader knowledge of various PM philosophies.

5 out of 5 stars Still valid even with the 2000 edition available.......2001-06-28

Why purchase the 1996 edition when the 2000 edition is out? Two reasons: (1) according to the Project Management Institute the PMP examinations conducted in 2001 will use the 1996 edition as one of the principal references, and (2) the 1996 edition is an Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) standard, designated as Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge IEEE 1490-1998.

This book is nearly identical to the 2000 edition with the following exceptions:

Chapter 2 (2000 edition) adds a brief piece on the role of project offices. Chapter 3 (2000 edition) appears to have taken a few ideas from the British PM standard, PRINCE 2 (PRojects IN a Controlled Environment) because more attention appears to be given to phases and interactions among phases. The 2000 edition also briefly addresses iterative development. Chapters 4 and 11 (2000 edition) more fully address earned value with a lot more material on this topic. Chapter 6 (2000 edition) briefly covers theory of constraints.

I have compared the 1996 and 2000 editions and cannot find any substantial differences between the two other than what I've cited above. However, since the PMI has stated that the 1996 edition is a resource for the 2001 examinations you need to go over this book carefully if you are a PMP candidate in 2001.

4 out of 5 stars This is really a guide, almost an index........2000-05-06

Project Management is not easy stuff, even though many people think all they need is to get a computer package and start using it in order to be project managers. This book is almost an index of the topics you should cover when managing a project, as well as a guide to the Project Management Institute Certification (PMP).

The book does not try to be fun, it is very technical. If you want to get serious about project management, or show off somebody who thinks he/she knows it all about project management, this is a good start point. As I said before, this is almost an index: covers a lot of topics, does not get into the details of almost anything. I would have liked it to includean example of how to put all the techniques together. Nevertheless, I would not say this books is not useful at all, I think it is really meant to be exclusively a guide.

Like the other reviewer, I read this book for a Project Management Course.

If you want to learn how to manage people on projects, and you think they should love their jobs, you should get "Peopleware", by Tom de Marco and Timothy Lister.

For a quick, basic introduction, I think "Fundamentals of Project Management", by Lewis, is almost a "Quick Guide", but you can give this one to busy people, since it is very thin and fun.

For a book that covers human and technical abilities on project management, try "A Survival Guide for Project Managers", by James Taylor.

3 out of 5 stars very dry and academic.......2000-04-13

I got this book for a course I took on Project Management. It definitely covers all of the technical aspects of project management, although in a very dry and uninteresting manner.

There is no coverage for specific types of projects, only the principles of project management that cover most projects most of the time and the PMI says as much in the book.

The book also doesn't cover anything about handling difficult people or manageing different personality types on a project, that's too much of a soft area for this book.

I would recomment this only as a text book for a course on PM. In that roll, it fits very nicely and makes sure that nothing gets missed, while the teacher can fill in the softer material that is absolutely necessary.

If you're looking for a book that will tell you interesting anecdotes and statistics on projects done well versus those done poorly and general pertinent guidlines for people on a software/construction/human resources project, this isn't what you want.

4 out of 5 stars Appreciate of the french version of the PMBOK.......2007-07-27

This book provides an exhaustive conceptual approach to Project Management. People who wish to pass their CAPM or PMP are advised to go through the book and learn the concept.

The book could, however, be of more value if it contained more illustrations of the application of these concepts in day to day business life.
