An Entertaining Read for ELR Fans.......2007-06-12
I think this book would appeal to fans of "Everybody Loves Raymond". For some parts it talks about the struggles of Phil Rosenthal's early days as an aspiring actor cum writer. His experiences before he found success are recorded with humor and insight. However the most entertaining parts were when he recounted how some of my favorite episodes came about. It is like a keepsake for an ELR fan.

Haven't read a book in years I am ashamed to say. However, a portion of this book was in the Reader's Digest recently and was fascinating, if you are a devotee of "Everyone Loves Raymond," Thought I would get it and it would collect dust, like the other books I purchase. Nope, I read it in 3 nites. Not sure why this book didn't soar, or at least I never heard about it. Phil Rosenthal permeates every episode of the Raymond series....you can see that clearly here.

I thought a humor book would have an edge as a book on CD, but the cadence of the author's voice is off-putting. It's like listening to Jackie Mason Lite. Good stories about the behind-the-scenes life of a comedy writer if you can get past the voice of Phil Rosenthal.

Save your money and for sure don't buy this book! The only funny thing stated in this book was from Groucho Marx. He said, "From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it." In respect for Groucho, I would have this to say to him, I read the book and there was nothing funny or laughable except for your quote.

Mediocre Bio on Fascinating Subject.......2007-07-10
While Parish appears to have done some research (a lengthy bibliography is included), he apparently did little more than read books/articles/reviews and listen to DVD commentaries. The result is an OK clip job that could have been much more---for example, why no interviews with Brooks' living colleagues? And hardly any mention is made of Brooks' three children from his first marriage, although several pages are devoted to his son from his marriage to Anne Bancroft.
The writing is workmanlike at best and at times much less than that (e.g., Sid Caesar is referred to as "powerfully built" on multiple occasions in the space of several pages). And some of the facts are wrong---for instance, Parish writes that the stage version of "The Producers" tried out in Detroit prior to Broadway---the tryout was in Chicago.
Brooks, a major creative force in American humor, deserves better.

He is properly appreciative of Brooks' most wonderful work, but not indifferent to his creative slumps (also known as the eighties). I agree with most of his assertions, but wish he'd credited them more specifically.
Especially since, having no original interviews with his subject, he relies on previously published works. To such an extent I couldn't help but feel a collection of interviews with the hardly press-shy humorist might have served just as well or better for his fans.
The King is Crowned.......2007-06-04
Admittedly, Mel Brooks is an acquired taste, because so much of his humor is of the "hit or miss" variety. (Confessed: I'm a Brooks fan - but he can occasionally "miss" even me.) Parish has turned out another one of his excellent books with this biography of funmeister Brooks. Mel's path to fame is an interesting one, and Parish tracks it well. He's one of the rare Hollywood writers - and more experienced ones, too - who doesn't delve into sensationalism in his books. Parish writes "biography" and relates stories, all in an informative, easy to read manner. This is an enoyable read from beginning to end. I was particularly intrigued with the "love story" aspect to Mel's life: namely, the romance and marriage of Brooks and Bancroft. Over the years, aside from their marriage being mentioned in the press, very little has been written about it. Parish does an encellent job of detailing it. Brooks didn't participate in the writing the book, but he should be very pleased with how it turned out. Parish does a superb job with this book on Mel's life. A most enjoyable book about one of the funniest men in the latter half of the twentieth-century.
I always knew he was a genius........2007-05-13
This book proves that nutty people are simply covering up their underlying genius. Mel can succeed in any endeavor he tries because beneath it all, he has a brilliant mind. A very enjoyable, fast-paced read.
Seriously Good Reading.......2007-03-27
The life of Mel Brooks reads like a history of comedy of the last 60 years - from his humble beginnings in Brooklyn, through summers at the Jewish resorts in the Catskills Borscht Belt, through recordings, T.V. theater and movies Mel Brooks did it all and worked with many of the comedy greats of the past half century (sometimes for better or worse). Brooks worked with Sid Ceaser, Jerry Lewis, Carl Reiner and countless others and married one of the great Hollywood actresses. This is a colorful look at his many triumphs and low points in between. And just when many would have written him off - he has roared back with the huge success of the musical Producers on Broadway. As with all his books, Mr. Parish has done extensive research and wonderfully describes the life of Mel Brooks.

Hugo preaches lawlessness.......2007-07-25
The author seems to have made up his own mind Who God is, blantly ignoring Who God has proclaimed Himself to be in the Word, specifically in Isaiah and specifically in chapter 45. In verse 7 God tells us He created light, darkness, prosperity, disaster, and in some versions EVIL. So why does the author claim that humanity and Satan is the source of evil and suffering in the world and that God has no control over what happens? That answer is in 2Thessalonians chapter 2:3&4 "Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for (that day will not come) until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God." God gives us CHOICES, not free will. Seriously, there is no one but God who accomplishes EVERYTHING he or she desires. This guy is full of baloney trying to say humans run the show and God allows it. That's just not true. And that lie that Satan was once an angel but fell: see John 8:44 "He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies," and 2Corinthians 11:14 "Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."
God would not have told us in Genesis 3:22 "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil," if evil exists in opposition to Him. Isaiah 66:2 sets us straight: "Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?" declares the LORD. "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word."
I'm sorry I bought the book. I couldn't get past page 28 for all the nonsense and blasphemy. Thanks for hearing me and God bless!

This book is very well written-I purchased 6 of them for high school graduation gifts-easy to read, throught-provoking, and humor and casual thinking intermixed with very serious issues. A great read!!

Don't let the title fool you! Eric's humor and wit will delight you and, perhaps, make you ponder the questions of life in new and meaningful way. He doesn't shy away from the big questions of life that everyone ponders...and that many in the university wax-on endlessly about...Along the way you may find yourself questioning some of your own ideas about God, the Bible and everyday Christians you meet on the street.
My husband and I buy this book in lots of ten to hand out to friends! It is definitely worth passing on and discussing among your pals. Or use it to pick up a few jokes to tell at a cocktail party...it'll certainly spark discussions.

I read this book after reading "Getting Old Still Ain't for Wimps" which I found very hilarious and I could see some things through the true stories of things I sometimes do and I'm 27.
After reading " getting Old Still Ain't for Wimps" I thought I'd better get the prequel " Getting Old Ain't for Wimps".

YOU ARE A DOG: Life Through the Eyes of Man's Best Friend by Terry Bain is an entertaining romp with words as they might have been written by the family dog. Mr. Bain reveals to readers that the family dog is quite aware that you have many names for her; but more interesting is the dog's many names for the family members, names such as: He Who Leaves the Seat Up So That You Might Drink (it has been my experience with dogs that it is usually the male dog that drinks out of the toilet, not the female); He Who Smells of Garlic, Tastes of Salt, and Will Let You Lick His Feet (Grandpa?); She Who Does Not Allow Licking Ever (Mother-in-Law?); She Who Drops Food From Her Plate (and always has a diaper full), are but a few of these titles the family dog bestows on its family members.
YOU ARE A DOG informs the reader of the dog's relationship with the household itself, including his relationship with the furniture, the sofa monopolizing much of the spotlight. Terry Bain speaks of the dog's ability to mimic human expressions, especially the smile, which the dog often uses to deflect a scolding when he has been caught sleeping on the sofa. (In my house, it is the love seat, which my Border collie, heeler, and Boxer mix mutt sleeps on every night. I need to share with you here, dear reader, that this mix of mutt is the nuttiest on four legs, sometimes two. Her name is Maggie Peppers; but as crazy as she is, she would never drink out of the toilet: However, the male cat does, every chance he gets.)
Most significant of the household items to the family dog is the vacuum cleaner. While most all threats to the family members arrive from the outside in, the vacuum is already in the house, hiding in the closet, which is quite agitating to the family dog. She can smell the vacuum hiding in the hall closet, just waiting to burst, roaring, from its hiding place, intent on eating everyone and everything in its path. It is the dog's responsibility, therefore, to see to it this monster does not eat the kids, and that any food or nonfood items on the floor are eaten by the dog only. Hence, the vacuum is not only a danger to the family, but also a competitor for food, and must be destroyed, at all cost.
Terry Bain writes humorously about Fido's perception of training, traveling, visits to the vet, health and hygiene, and even doggie politics. If you are a dog lover, you will love this book. Highly recommended.
MAN'S Best Friend?.......2006-03-30
Dogs are not JUST man's best friend. I think the title lacks... obviously. Ladies, if you are feeling a bit offended I would like to suggest reading: "Woman's Best Friend" By Barbara Cohen & Louise Taylor. Ever since I can remember dogs have always been referred to as "Man's Best Friend" so not true.

When I got this book for Christmas, I thought I would treated to a sincere attempt to get inside the mind of my dog to view the world as he might. The jacket cover has this great picture of a deliously happy pup with his head out the car window. How many times haven't I tried to envision what a creature with a dog's sense of smell must be experiencing on our morning rides down to the town park.
What I got, instead, was a series brief vignetts ranging from one paragraph to several pages in length. I have to say some were cute, but many were hard to finish. They were grouped into categories that really don't organize material in any meaningful way.
Although you can certainly read 150 pages over a weekend, that approach doesn t work. But to be fair, the author might well have intended his readers to read one scenario each morning and to reflect on them throughout the day. That's an approach I can appreciate.
Wasn't that what "Dogs Don't Bite When a Growl Will Do" by Matt Weinsteinand and Luke Barker was about?
Let's put it this way, "It worked for them."
Do not underestimate the vacuum.......2005-09-13
I loved this book so much that I bought a half dozen copies to give to my dog-loving friends. The way that Terry Bain twists the everyday world from a dog's point of view is both brilliant and hillarious. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has a dog and ever has wondered what she was thinking.

If you have a dog you will recognize your friend in the humorous pages of this book. If you a know a dog, you will learn to know him better. But, if you want a dog--you will better understand the relationship you are adding to your life by acquiring such a creature.
The book is a warm, insightful and sweet monologue written from the dog's point of view.
A must read for all dog lovers.

I'm a woman who enjoys fishing and hadn't seen many books that covered my favorite topic from both sides of the gender line. I loved this book! Many of the stories could have been pulled from my own experiences they seemed so familiar. I highly recommend this book for a summer read. I love the fact that I can pick it up, read a story and put it down to do some chores, then pick it up again later without missing a beat. My favorite stories are the Bologna Wars by Tanith Tyler, and Tadpoles Triumph by Banjo Bandolas. I've passed the book on to my children now and they seem to enjoy it as much as I have.

The Chicken Soup stories follow a formula, and are too sentimental for me. Some people like them though, and that's okay.

The stories were very well written with the exception of Jennie Martin. I just don't beleive her stories, though she passes them off as the truth. I also heard that the fish she catches are hand offs from guides. She fly fishes irregularily and posts that she doesn't catch many fish either on her own website. I think she should not have been included with the other illustrious fishing writers.

14 Hours'til bedtime was so much fun to read. I am a mom of five year-old twins, and I know all about long and sometimes chaotic days with the kid's (and so does Jen Singer!) She has a great sense of humor with her writing that I think most any mom can relate too!

I have three little ones at home, our oldest is 4 and he has twin brothers that are 19 months younger. I find that when I get together with other parents in similar situations we are always laughing about the things our kids do and the realities of life with little ones. I always find that after one of those sessions I feel recharged as a parent. I was hoping this book would be a similar experience. Some parts really were very nice and funny. But much of it fell into the kind of funny, but angry or sarcastic camp. This sort of jaded or dark humor is easier to write, but it did not give me a refreshing recharge. Instead, many parts leave you wondering when will they grow up and stop being so difficult. Bottom line, I wanted humor to refresh but felt like it created too much of a negative feel. If you are looking for more edgey parenting humor - this book works well and is funny in that way.

This wonderful book got me through a rough time being the mother of small children. It was easy to read in the middle of diapers, naps, and playtime. She makes you laugh and feel good through her escapades as a mother. Jen Singer expresses "Mommy Hood" in a new light. Jen's website is an excellent source for Mommies who need a five minute break to brighten there day. Jen's book helped me realize there are other moms out there going through similar trials. I will forever be a loyal reader to her work. Thank you, Jen!

Some days I wake up and my first thought is, "I can't wait to go back to bed tonight." Jen Singer made me realize I was not the only one cleaning crayons out of toddlers teeth and starving for some adult conversation. I read most of this book sitting in the parking lot of my older kid's school while my two year old twins took the nap that I so desperately needed each day. The parents in the cars around me must have thought I had lost my mind as she had me reduced to tears and uncontrolable laughter at the same time. Thanks Jen.

I run a small church in Selma, Alabama and I'm feeling the sickness of the devil. For any Christian who is tempted to purchase this book believing that it portrays any Christian values as Ms. Eggett suggests, the absolute opposite is true. This book is a dark, mean-spirited mockery of all that Christians hold dear. It is absolutely awful, unfunny, mean and written without heart. Do not fall into temptation by wasting your hard-earned money on this vile excuse for a book. You have every right to read what you wish but this is one of the most anti-Christian tomes that I have ever tried to suffer through.

Admit it... you read all those popular so-called self-help books and put their advices, exercises, recommendations, suggestions, plans, ideas, mantras, meditations, visualizations, affirmations, prayers to work only to find that none of that silliness works, and then you turned to this book and had a NECESSARY GOOD OL' LAUGH!... This was the dumbest book I have ever read. By reading the reviews of this book before I bought it-it sounded like it would be really funny. It is soooo disappointing, I couldn't finish reading it. Wish I could return it! It's going right into the charity box.

There was a lot to like about this book beginning with the concept. A book that rakes self help books over the proverbial coals is a premise you'd think would have been done long ago.
With that concept, the laughs come easy. As an occasional reader of Tony Robbins I found the chapter mocking his "The Giant Within" ("The Behemoth Within") to be hysterical, and the funniest thing I've read in a while. (In the chapter sending up the book, "Tony Robbins" is a giant of a man who lives in a run down tiny apartment so small he has to sleep with his feet extending into the apartment building corridor.) I also liked the scathing send ups of "The Rules" "Who Moved My Cheese", and "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" the latter a sanctimonious, patronizing financial advice book that was ripe for parody. The book correctly portrays self improvement authors as a group of vain men & women who love to put phony "Dr" credentials in front of their name and refer to themselves in first person.
I also loved the parodies of those little "positive affirmations" books with their piffy little positive thought balloons. Also the brilliant, hard hitting mockery of "Maybe He's Just Not That Into You" when all a guy has to do is sneeze for the authors to shout "dump that loser" had me laughing.
The reviews for this book are all over the map, proving how subjective comedy is. But if you're a halfway well read person who has a basic understanding of what a self improvement book is, you will LOVE this book. Also if you're a fan of satire, specifically movies like "Spinal Tap", and "Best of Show" you will love this book.
My only complaint is that some of the diagrams were a little bland. But the text sparkles.

Read lots of reviews before buying this. Cannot believe anyone would think this is a self help book or even a spoof on a self help book. The best thing about this book is the title. If you like real inane humor then this book is for you. Comparing it to the humor of Woody Allen or Gary Larsen is like comparing the Ritz Carlton to Days Inn. The humor is so corny that it brought back memories of the Three Stooges. If anyone wants this book I'd be glad to send it to them free just to get rid of it.
