This new version of the Star Trek Encyclopedia is a reissue of the 1997 edition, plus a 128-page supplement of additional material that updates Deep Space Nine to the end of its run and Voyager to midway through season five. It also covers the movie Star Trek: Insurrection. The supplement is as meticulously detailed as the rest of the volume, listing such fascinating trivia as chadre kab (Seven of Nine's first meal), 'Kahless and Lukara' (a Klingon opera), and voraxna (a Cardassian poison), as well as all the new characters and species. Appendices include illustrations of starships, cast and crew listings, a historical timeline, and a bibliography. All photographs and illustrations (except for a few historical shots) are in color. The encyclopedia was devised in part to help production staff on the various Star Trek TV series to keep up with the ever-increasing level of detail generated by over 30 years of creative effort. It is an excellent reference volume and, whether you want to settle an argument or write a novel, this book will answer your questions. But beware: the extensive cross-referencing leads to curious time-distortion effects, in which the unwary reader, dipping in to settle a single query, encounters an irresistible urge to browse further, during which hours of normal time can pass in the wink of an eye. --Elizabeth Sourbut

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, but an update is overdue!.......2007-06-17

I bought this book in 2003, and it covered most of the bases then, but only the movies through 1998 ("Insurrection" IIRC; "Nemesis" is not covered.), and the 5th season of Voyager. It just covered the last season of DS9. And of course it has none of the "Enterprise" series.

There have also been events such as the Paramount auction of all the series and movie paraphernalia since then, and that could be a chapter all by itself.

I came on Amazon today expecting to see a new and updated version for sale, and was disappointed that the old edition is still all that's available.

Michael and Denise Okuda know everything there is to know about ST, and are the perfect people to update this. If I were shopping today for the first time I would say wait for the new edition, but buy a used paperback 1999 just to see what it's all about.

Keeping my fingers crossed that someone sees the demand for an updated version!

2 out of 5 stars OK if you ignore obsolecence.......2007-04-19

Nothing on the end of Voyager's Delta Quadrant wanderings? Nothing on Enterprise's backstory additions and newly-created anachronisms? Both this book and the related Star Trek Chronology need serious revamping. I appreciate the Okuda's insider Trekker style, but this reeks of willful blindness!

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Star Trek fans.......2007-03-04

The COMPLETE encyclopedia of Star Trek info. A must for those fans who want to ensure an exhaustive Star Trek knowledge base.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2007-02-08

Hi! I am from Italy. I have bought "Star Trek Encyclopedia" and I like it very much, but this book stops at 1999: it is not updated whith last Voyager's seasons (fifth, sixth and seventh), the whole Enterprise's cycle and "Star Trek: Nemesis".

Since 1977, the Star Wars universe, conceived by George Lucas, has been explored by authors and artists eager to build on the foundation laid by the blockbuster movies. The Star Wars Encyclopedia is the essential guide to every detail of the history, planets, vehicles, politics, aliens, and weapons described in countless books, comics, stories, and (of course) movies. You'll find extraordinary details about old favorites here--for instance, did you know that Luke Skywalker helped rescue Han and Leia's children from the dark side of the Force? Or that the primary food of Jawas is the hubba gourd? Endless hours of browsing pleasure await you, from A-1 Deluxe Floater (a luxury air speeder) to ZZ-4Z (Han Solo's housekeeping droid). Each item is cross-referenced to the book, movie, or comic in which it appears, but fans looking for "real-life" information about the Star Wars phenomenon won't find it here--this is strictly a resource for those who want to keep track of how all the stories and characters fit together, the clothes they wear, the foods they eat, and the planets they call home. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

Its vast history and environs have been explored, studied, and chronicled extensively for more than twenty years. Now, this landmark volume--a definitive reference devoted exclusively to the Star Wars milieu--draws together data from films, radio dramas, novels, short stories, computer games, and more, running the full gamut of this extraordinary galaxy.

From science and technology to history and geography; from culture and biography to ecology and cosmology; from "abo" and "Abrax" to "zwil" and "Zirtran's Anchor," this all-encompassing, fully illustrated, alphabetical reference covers all the elements which have developed and expanded the Star Wars universe, creating a rich and diverse history that spans millennia. Its scope ranges from the renowned and infamous ("Luke Skywalker," "Darth Vader") to the obscure and enigmatic ("Tnun Bdu"); from the history of the Sith Wars to the Galactic Civil War that pit the Rebel Alliance against the Empire. It introduces us to the natives and customs of planets as diverse as Tatooine and Dagobah, and even to the secrets and beliefs of the Jedi Knights.

As a bonus for the intensive researcher, this massive reference includes the complete timeline of major events in Star Wars history.

Every key element that exists in the world of Star Wars is supplied here--in clearly defined entries that have been researched and written by one of the leading authorities on the Star Wars universe.

4 out of 5 stars An Essential for Star Wars Fans.......2007-03-11

This is not a book for casual "Star Wars" fans. It covers things most of them have never heard. By no means complete (the Star Wars universe has new additions on an almost daily basis), it does have plenty of entries that were current up to the publication date.

For die-hards, this tome offers some pictures that have rarely been seen. Most are in color, some are in black and white (and some come from the Dark Horse comics). One glaring omission is the lack of any material from the Marvel Comics series. While that series has many critics, for a long time that was the only extra material "Star Wars" junkies had. Why those characters were omitted seems obvious (they aren't "official" parts of the universe anymore), it still would have been nice to read about our hero's adventures on the Marvel worlds and learn more about the Marvel characters.

5 out of 5 stars star wars encyclopedia.......2006-06-30

i found the content great especially for it being the original trilogy and comic books as well as the mini movies. it was also suprising that it was current up to the modified episodes of 4-6.

1 out of 5 stars Really crummy..........2004-12-12

I am terribly sorry I bought this book. I'm a big fan of George Lucas' Star Wars work, but this is an expensive edition dealing all the novels written on his idea, and doesn't cover anything about Episodes I, II and III. Where is Jar-jar Binks? What about Qi-gon? Nope, not a single line.
I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about the Clone Wars, and about how Luke and Leia were separated when they were kids. There is almost no information about that - on the other hand, there is a lot on Leia and Han Solo's kids!
I hope I can sell this on eBay...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent *THEN*, Not so hot now...........2004-10-16

This was an excellent book when it came out, and just glancing at the other reviews gives you an idea of what the good qualities are- and there are many.
But since then, the prequels have been added to the Star Wars world, the entire NJO series of books has come out, and how many other sources?
If you're looking for a starting place to work on your SW knowledge, this is a great way to go.
If you're looking for a handy reference to everything Star Wars that is as up to date as it can be, well... This book is from 1998. That's *six* years ago.
If this book were to be updated, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. It was excellent when it was new and I had no complaints. Until then, I'll just stick with a borrowed copy for those rare occasions when outdated info might help.

4 out of 5 stars A great Star Wars reference book........2004-09-23

This book is a wonderful reference book for the original Star Wars Trilogy and many of the books. Giving wonderful descriptions , pictures and history of many of the characters in the Star Wars universe. A great book to have at your side when watching the Star Wars movies or reading other Star Wars books.
This will give you a wonderful insight to more of the Star Wars story.

As there's new movies and many additional books having been written about the Star Wars Universe, this needs to be updated. Hopefully this will be done when Episode III is released. I would also reccommend for the die hard Star Wars fan, the book Star Wars Chronicles and the DK Visual Dictionary's. If this book was updated it would be a 5+ stars, however being out of date, it's still a wonderful book at 4.5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable and Inaccurate.......2007-03-14

IF YOU WANT REAL INFORMATION ABOUT TOLKIEN, THE LORD OF THE RINGS, OR ANY OF HIS OTHER BOOKS, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK, OR ANYTHING ELSE BY DAVID DAY!

I was given a copy of this book as a christmas present a number of years ago, and naively perused it, fascinated by the 'insights' into Tolkien's mythos and world. However, once I actually started to study Tolkien, I quickly realized just how completely bogus most of the stuff Day writes is.

One particular example that always strikes me is Day's entry on dragons, where he claims that there are three kinds of dragons: legless, legged, and winged. This is just plain wrong- there is no hint anywhere in any of Tolkien's writings that there were legless dragons. Day just seemed to like the idea, and went with it.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference book!.......2006-09-29

Read every page of it! Great book. I highly recommend reading this book before you read any of this larger works. There are so many characters and information in Tolkien work, reading this book beforehand will definitely help you if you have had trouble remember who is who.

5 out of 5 stars A great book!!!!! But one problem............2005-04-26

This book is very thorough and explains ALMOST everything in the Tolkien universe very well. When I was looking through a bookshelf at my local bookstore, I found and great book. It changed my whole outlook on Lord of the Rings. Now my knowledge is quite extensive and I understand the lord of the rings trilogy a lot better. I would recomend this book for anyone. There is one small problem.. In the maps of middle earth and arda. They really show no detail of tolkien's world except for the bodies of water and the continents. But overall, this is an awesome book.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, BUT!.......2002-09-21

With "The fellowship of the Ring" motion picture coming up, I became interested again in Tolkiens wholly self-invented mythology. Strolling through my local bookshop one day, my eye was caught by a beautiful painting of Smaug attacking Lake Town. This painting turned out to be the cover of a beautifully illustrated and quite complete encyclopedia of Tolkiens World.

For me, the buying of this book turned out to be the starting point of a massive inquiry in Tolkiens world which I have far from ended today. And even after all that supplementary reading The Illustrated Encyclopaedia remains today one of my favorite books.

However. Getting nowadays more at home in Tolkiens mythology I am beginning to see the wholes in the text. I'm not saying that the "Encyclopaedia" errs, but I do believe that if the author had taken his research even further it would have turned out to be an even better, if not brilliant book. I give two examples.

First, the books chapters are about history, geography, sociology, natural history and biografies. Why not add a chapter about important objects, discussing for example the Rings of Power and/or the various magical swords wielded by the great heroes of Middle Earth? Such a chapter, I am sure, would prove very interesting. But by letting this stuff out, people are left with an alltogether beautiful, but essentially incomplete encyclopaedia.

Second, when one takes into consideration the subjects that did make the book, it is all to obvious that some of the information that should have been there was simply left out. Considering the history of Arda, for example, I was astonished to find no reference at all regarding the Dagor Dagorath, the final battle of the Gods, when Morgoth the Dark Enemy returns and Arda will be laid to waste...

My final word on the subject : I love this book, but what if...

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud FUNNY.......2005-01-10

This is one of the few books that I have laughed out loud until tears streamed down my face!!! When trying to share the funniest entries, I can't even read them without laughing again. From analyzing the famous "Yeti on the lou" Pertwee phrase to including a table of contents containing only the letters of the alphabet, this is humor and wit at its best. I have never found a funnier Doctor Who book and I am hard pressed to name a funnier novel in general. If you do not have this book you don't know what you're missing!!! A++++

5 out of 5 stars Irreverent worship!.......2002-01-13

This book is an incredible collection of phrases and Whoisms that have appeared throughout Doctor Who's many years on the air. The authors have managed to poke fun at the good Doctor while assuring the reader that they're really on our side. It's a lot like making fun of your family - only another family memeber can get away with it. If you're not family, watch out! From "AAH" to "ZORG AND ORG," it's all there - every last tasty fun morsel that makes Doctor Who a worldwide institution.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Perfect.......1999-02-22

This text is the funniest book I have ever read... Poking fun at not only Doctor Who, but the fandom of Doctor Who, this book is a laugh-riot from the introductory debate over stories' names, to the final index page which lists simply the letters of the alphabet and the Dedication to Godzilla. My favorite parts: the description of Season Eighteen as an "amusing omission from The Doctors: Thirty Years of Time Travel" and the description of Lazar's Disease as a syndrome whose main symptom is removing one's clothing... Lyons & Howarth are to be commended for such a devistatingly funny work.

5 out of 5 stars Fanboy delight! If you're a true fan, you WILL laugh........1997-09-29

Hilarious & irreverent, the useless encyclopedia looks unflinchingly at the schitzophrenic british fan base, the shoddy "classic" episodes, the ludicrous "new adventures", and just about everything and anything "Who" and useless. Written by fans for fans.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite reference works.......2001-06-28

"The Sci-Fi Channel Encyclopedia of TV Science Fiction" is an impressive achievement by co-authors Roger Fulton and John Betancourt. The book is a guide to dozens of science fiction TV series dating from the 1950s to the late 1990s. The authors include British and U.S. series (as well as a few productions from elsewhere). A nice touch is the inclusion of children's series and short-lived series (such as TV's "Planet of the Apes" and "The Fantastic Journey"). Fantasy, as well as sci-fi, series are included.

For the main series profiled, the authors provide an introductory article as well as a complete episode guide. For each episode, they give a plot summary, as well as writing, directing, and guest-starring credits.

Not all the series are given such detailed attention; some only have the episode titles listed, and some don't even get that. In general, shows that get less comprehensive attention are shows that are primarily thought of as representatives of another genre: "Bewitched" (sitcom), "The Six Million Dollar Man" (action/adventure), etc.

Despite its sometimes incomplete nature, this is a wonderfully informative and entertaining book. Sci-fi staples and cult favorites are well represented: "Babylon 5," "Blake's 7," "Quantum Leap," "Star Trek" and its various sequels, "The X-Files," etc. I particularly liked the ample attention given to short-lived shows that were nonetheless loved by devoted circles of viewers.

Of course, a book of this nature is generally out of date by the time it hits the bookshelves, so I am already anticipating a new edition. But until then, this book remains in an honored position in my library.

4 out of 5 stars If you love SF, especially TV SF, you will enjoy this book........1999-07-28

I'm a life-long fan of Science Fiction who was raised with TV as my primary grow light, and as such, I gotta tell you that THE SCI-FI CHANNEL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TV SCIENCE FICTION, by Roger Fulton & John Betancourt, it is pretty cool. It contains lots of information about all those great--and even not-so-great--Science Fiction, horror, and fantasy TV shows that we SF fans all love and cherish, including some stuff on obscure, nearly forgotten shows like NBC's short-lived SF comedy QUARK. There are also program guides for a lot of the shows listed, with air dates and short episode synopses.

While I really like the book and think it is a must for any serious fan of SF, there are, alas, a few shortcomings--but only a few. For one, it does not contain an entry for BORIS KARLOFF'S THRILLER, which is surprising not only because the show is an American classic, but also because the show itself is currently broadcast on the very network that is sanctioning this book. Also, fans of certain less-popular but relatively recent shows may be disappointed to find that the entry for those shows do not include an episode guide (e.g., THE FLASH or THE ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTY, JR.). I must also mention that there are a few mistakes in the book's Table of Contents, but this is only a minor annoyance and is easy to surmount.

In short, if you love SF, especially Television SF, you will enjoy this book.

2 out of 5 stars An incomplete "complete guide".......1999-05-16

While the book jacket calls this "The SCI-FI Channel Encyclopedia of TV Science Fiction," it is more a product of England's TVTimes. It is a very good resource for British SciFi and, for the price, is worth owning for that reason alone. However it is more notable for what it omits than what it includes. Space limits a point by point critique, but two things became apparent almost immediately. First, it does not have an index. While, like most encyclopedias, it is in alphabetical order, with out a comprehensive index it is impossible to cross reference information. Second, It has many glaring omissions. No work can be total, but the history of TV Sci-Fi is not that long. In the whole realm of TV shows, few are Sci-Fi, so a complete list should not be that hard to assemble. The authors have made a good try, but where they fall short is questionable. If "Journey to the Unknown" is classified as Sci-Fi, why is "Thriller" omited? If Sci-Fi comedy such as "Captian Nice" and "Holmes and Yoyo" listed, where is "My Living Doll," "Mr. Terrific," or "It's About Time"? Why didn't the "Star Lost" make it to the "41 obscure Shows. . ." list at the end of the book? The inside jacket says that, "no true SF fan should be without this up-to-date reference guide." In reality, any true SF fan will find this book cute but annoying. And any casual TV fan looking to add to their reference library would do better buying "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network TV Shows." It tends more to deliver what is promised

2 out of 5 stars This book has too many omissions........1999-04-10

A hastily-updated version of an older book originally published in Britain, it lacks guides for dozens of shows such as Beyond Reality, Tales from the Darkside, Goosebumps, Friday the 13th, Probe, Starman, Misfits of Science, etc. Even when shows are covered, they often consist only of a list of episode titles, e.g. Tekwar, Forever Knight, Captain Power, Wild Wild West, VR.5, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Hercules and Xena. Sometimes the listing is woefully incomplete: the book covers only 10 of the 65 episodes of Ray Bradbury Theater and only 13 of the 96 episodes of One Step Beyond. And you can forget it if you're looking for episode info on old shows such as Space Patrol, Rocky Jones Space Ranger, Flash Gordon, World of Giants, Commando Cody, or Way Out. Even some shows currently running on the Sci-Fi Channel, such as Boris Karloff's Thriller, are not covered. If you're willing to spend a little more, get Alan Morton's "Complete Directory" instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - really nice episode guides. Useful........1999-03-12

I really like this book - I keep it next to my TV and use it to note down which shows I have in my collection, just a checkmark and a tape number next to the episode guides.

I understand it's an update of a British book -- seems very current, it even has shows like The Burning Zone and Homeboys in Outer Space.

2 out of 5 stars Omissions and errors decrease the value of this book.......2000-05-27

This book is badly edited, sloppily written, and unreliable. Major characters from The Original Series and the movies (Saavik, for instance) are left out while even the most minor character from The Next Generation receives full coverage. It's also too dated to be of much use to the Deep Space Nine or Voyager fan.

      I don't recommend this book.
