Flexibility and tolerance are learned skills, as any parent knows if they've seen an irascible 2-year-old grow into a pleasant, thoughtful, and considerate older child. Unfortunately, for reasons that are poorly understood, a few children don't "get" this part of socialization. Years after toddler tantrums should have become an unpleasant memory, a few unlucky parents find themselves battling with sudden, inexplicable, disturbingly violent rages--along with crushing guilt about what they "did wrong." Medical experts haven't helped much: the flurry of acronyms and labels (Tourette's, ADHD, ADD, etc.) seems to proffer new discoveries about the causes of such explosions, when in fact the only new development is alternative vocabulary to describe the effects. Ross Greene, a pediatric psychologist who also teaches at Harvard Medical School, makes a bold and humane attempt in this book to cut through the blather and speak directly to the (usually desperate) parents of explosive children. His text is long and serious, and has the advantage of covering an enormous amount of ground with nuance, detail, and sympathy, but also perhaps the disadvantage that only those parents who are not chronically tired and time-deprived are likely to get through the entire book. Quoted dialogue from actual sessions with parents and children is interspersed with analysis that is always oriented toward understanding the origins of "meltdowns" and developing workable strategies for avoidance. Although pharmacological treatment is not the book's focus, there is a chapter on drug therapies. --Richard Farr
Book Description
A groundbreaking approach to understanding and parenting children who frequently exhibit severe fits of temper and other intractable behaviours, from a distinguished clinician and pioneer in this field, now updated to include the most recent research.
Almost everyone knows an explosive child, one whose frequent, severe fits of temper leave his or her parents standing helpless in their fear, frustration, and guilt. Most of these parents have tried everything –– reasoning, behaviour modification, therapy, medication –– but to no avail. They wonder if their child is deviant or just plain bad.
Dr. Ross Greene has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: these kids aren't bad, and neither are their parents. Rather, explosive children suffer from a physiological deficiency in frustration tolerance and flexibility. Throughout this compassionate book, Dr. Greene demonstrates why traditional treatments don't work for these kids and offers a new conceptual framework for understanding their behaviour, along with new language to describe it. He explains the latest neuroscience findings about the importance of flexibility, and, most important, he shows parents specific, practical ways they can recognize the signs of an impending explosion, defuse tension, and reduce frustration levels for the entire family.
o For parents, psychologists, educators and ADHD groups.
o In addition to the scientific foundation of the book, Greene addresses parents in practical ways that will help show results in difficult children and their effect on families.

A Must-Read for Parents of Challenging Children.......2007-10-05
Ross Greene has written an incredibly insightful book about the kids for whom traditional parenting techniques just don't work. He explains well why kids who yell, scream, and generally melt down over what seem to be -- to parents and others -- inconsequential things can't just "be flexible." And he explains well why the traditional carrot-and-stick approach of rewards and consequences just doesn't work with these kids. As a parent of a child who went from colic as an infant to tantrums as a toddler to explosions and melt downs as a child, I know what he's talking about, and I've tried all those other techniques that haven't worked. Greene lets parents see that kids who lack frustration tolerance and flexibility need extra support and a different approach to learning those skills, the way a kid with a reading disability needs extra support and a different approach to reading. It all makes so much sense, but is a great departure from the typical limit-setting approaches. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It's really helping me to become the parent I want to be!
A great guide for parents struggling with an explosive child!.......2007-08-14
I was pleasantly surprised by the straightforward approach to this book. Instead of a psychobabble, Dr. Greene explains potential reasons your child may be struggling to control his/her outbursts in language a layperson can understand. More importantly, we found very practical, effective help for dealing with these frustrating explosions that have become very disruptive to our family. I feel hopeful after reading this book that we can finally help our child deal with the frustrations of life in a healthy, appropriate manner. If you are looking for solutions without thousands of dollars in therapy and medication that may not be warranted for your child (although sometimes it certainly is), I would highly recommend this book.
Review on the book Explosive Child.......2007-08-13
I think it is a very didatic book for both parents with this type of problems in their families or for professionals.
not a cure all, but the most helpful approach yet .......2007-07-26
Last year my 16 year old stepdaughter moved in with us. She has ADHD and ODD. I had never even HEARD of ODD at that time. I could not believe that a 16 year old could throw TANTRUMS but she has my 4 year old nephew beat. She could melt down over the smallest things! This book confirmed what I knew in my heart - that she doesn't WANT to be a bad kid and she DOES want our LOVE. Learning to negotiate with her in a positive way has been incredibly helpful and there have been much fewer meltdowns since my husband and I read this book.
Can relate to so much.......2007-07-17
I was amazed when I began reading the book The Explosive Child. I am about half-way through the book so far and I have learned much already on proactive ways to approach different situations involving my difficult 4 year old son. This is extremely important. Although he has not had an official diagnosis at this time, I can relate to much of what these other families encountered while raising their chilren. I highly recommend this book to any parent who is trying to raise a child who has difficulties with change (especially), constructive criticism, and many other roadblocks in the life of a parent/child relationship. I am looking forward to continuing to study this book.

Book Description
*The Culture Clash is special. Written in Jean's inimitably informal yet precise lecture style, the book races along on par with a good thriller. *The Culture Clash depicts dogs as they really are - stripped of their Hollywood fluff, with their loveable 'can I eat it, chew it, urinate on it, what's in it for me' philosophy. Jean's tremendous affection for dogs shines through at all times, as does her keen insight into the dog's mind. Relentlessly she champions the dog's point of view, always showing concern for their education and well being. Without a doubt, Jean's book is the hottest doggy item on the market. Best Training Book Of The Year! (Maxwell Award)
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books on positive dog training.......2007-09-20
I see lots of controversy in the reviews, but I think many of the negative reviewers have missed some important points in this volume, or perhaps have reacted emotionally to them. This is an excellent book on positive dog training - one of the best. If you want a close, mutually-respectful relationship with a well-behaved dog, this is really the way to go.
Jean Donaldson fully acknowledges that we can build close relationships with our animals and that the use of classical and operant conditioning are not the only methods that can be used for training. She simply shows that these approaches are the most effective ways, and the most scientifically-validated approaches for socializing and training dogs using positive methods. If you want to teach your dog good behavior or new behaviors, socialize it well and use positive behavior methods. You can still be emotionally close with your dog, but don't use your (or your dog's) emotions as the primary TRAINING tool--we all tend to respond more readily to consequences when we're learning. When applied properly, Donaldson's methods really do work with a very wide range of dogs and problems. Some reviewers may be unhappy because the currently-popular "pack theory" is not supported in this book. In my reading of it, however, I did not see Donaldson "slamming" pack theory, but merely stating that there's a lack of scientific evidence that it really works, and she offers a noncoercive method that DOES have solid science behind it. Through effective use of behavioral methods, as explained in this book, you can create a most satisfying relationship with your dog, and your dog will respect you. But at the same time, the training takes into account the unique characteristics of dogs. Dogs do not need to be subjugated in order to follow our leadership. (Actually, when you watch some of the "leader of the pack" trainers work, you'll also see them using a LOT of what Donaldson talks about. What Donaldson avoids are the aversive control measures that are sometimes employed by others.)
As a psychologist, I thought Donaldson's explanations of behavioral methods were very good, although they might be a bit technical or detailed for some. I train therapy dogs to work with children, and I also train children to interact positively with therapy dogs, and I really have no choice but to use positive methods. The kids learn how to be the leader for the dog, but we do it via all-positive methods, such as defined in this book.
I've trained a lot of dogs through the years using a variety of methods, and I've recently reviewed many training books in preparation for a book I've written about using dogs in play therapy, and I wholeheartedly endorse positive training methods as the means of training dogs for a wide range of roles: well-behaved pets, obedience, therapy work, and traditional working dogs (such as herding or hunting). Donaldson makes it clear how and why this works.
Some may want an easy manual of the "10 steps to training a dog," and this book is not organized that way. I think its aim is to educate the owner or trainer in a process, and how to apply that process to a wide range of situations and behaviors. Ultimately, understanding the material in this book permits owners/trainers much more versatility in the work they do with dogs.
I strongly recommend this book. To get the most out of it, put your preconceived notions on a back burner and really try to see what she is saying. She provides the most effective way of helping dogs learn our human ways (by requiring us to learn about their canine ways!), and ultimately, having a well-socialized and well-mannered dog can only deepen the loving relationships we have with our pets. We have 4 dogs (2 are rescues who came with some problems), and I'm as attached as ever to all of them, and a lot less frustrated when I'm trying to teach them something new!
It helped me tremendously.......2007-08-18
The most important thing to know is this: I like dogs, but I'm not a dog lover. I don't go to shows, I refuse to cook for dogs, and it disturbs me when people refer to dogs as their children. I live, however, with a partner who loves dogs and does all 3 things... We have two large, intelligent dogs from two different notoriously "willful" breeds. My partner's dog training coach loaned us a copy and I read it.
The book did a tremendous job of showing me how I was creating much of my own stress through my interactions with the dogs. The author's largest point is to not anthropomorphize dogs and assign motives to their behavior consistent with primate, rather than canine, drives and intelligence. It helped me tremedously understanding what was reasonable to expect and its helping us both in getting our dogs more consistently obedient.
It's a great book and since finishing it, I've realized that virtually everyone out there in the dog world (including me) romanticizes the behavior of dogs to the point that I'm amazed any dogs are successful as pets. If you decide to read this book, please give it a fair shot and read past the first time the author disagrees with one of your deeply held beliefs about dogs. I promise you that even if you disagree with the book, you will take away things worth considering.
Very detailed! Excellent book for beginning dog trainers.......2007-07-07
This book is very well-written. It gives LOTS of insight into the dog world. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it is a little too detailed. People who are just wanting some basic information for why Spot won't come when he's called should not get this book. I found it very insightful as I begin to train my pugs in obedience.
Some Good Info But Too Much Clutter.......2007-06-25
Frankly I wasn't able to read the book all the way through, I had trouble with the author spending a lot of effort unnecessarily slamming other training methods and theories, and in some instances talking down to the reader. Her theories should be able to stand on their own merits without bashing other theories. Organization is also lacking, often introducing things and then noting that follow up of the will occur later in the book. I tend to prefer starting on a subject and completing it within a given section. The chapters could generally stand some editing to allow the book to be used for easier reference by issue, given that this is for the most part a training guide.
While I agree with most of the author's training methods I also see the validity in other methods since there truly appears to no given method that out shines all of the others. I do like the positive reinforcement approach to dog training that most people are now practicing, and while the method presented is a good sound method of training dogs I don't see it being heads and shoulders above the rest. All in all this book could be a very good guide if it were made to be more positive, reorganized by content, and overall cut back by about 30%.
Great Book!.......2007-06-12
Chock full of great ideas for working with your dog. Best dog training book I've read (and I've read a lot of them)! Creative, effective solutions to your dog behavior problems.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

What are We to Make of Computers, and Computers Make of Us.......2002-04-20
Winograd and Flores' `Understanding Computers and Cognition' proposes that the rationalist tradition in AI must be replaced by a hermeneutic approach. Associating the rationalist tradition with the goal of building a human mind, the authors propose that a hermeneutic approach must adopt the goal of constructing prostheses which magnify the human mind. This paper argues that what AI needs is not so much a hermeneutic approach as a better appreciation of biology and psychology. Understanding Computers and Cognition is a groundbreaking book that presents an important new approach to understanding what computers do and how their functioning is related to human language, thought and action. Byte Magazine has recognized Understanding Computers and Cognition as one of the all-time 20 most influential books on information technology.
Thank you!
Not Just Another Pretty Face.......2001-07-24
A few years ago Byte Magazine named this one of the 10 most important books in the history of the computer industry. Flores was asked to keynote the 50th anniversary meeting of the ACM on the strength of the work he has done, some of which is shown here.
I am a little surprised not to find a review here that shows awareness of what this book is and was intended to do -- to turn those concerned with the design of the role of computers in society into a new direction. The book offers a fundamental enrichment and extension to the traditional engineering-based foundations that are used for designing computer systems that is drawn from philosophy and biology. It opens the development of a rigorous new design milleau to the reader. This is NOT yet another multi-disciplinary rumination.
I would say this is not a "helpful" book, and it was never intended as an easy read. It is a book to turn to when one has learned enough about what is really at issue in putting computers to work in human life to discover that the likes of input, process, output, "friendly" interfaces, attractive graphical presentations, and logical flow charts are vastly insufficient distinctions for doing work that really makes a contribution to your clients and colleagues. The book challenges the reader strongly, and is not simple to read. I guess that the best way to read it is with someone else, having discussions as you go along.
This is a book to engage and grow with -- a must-read for those serious about designing and building systems that will affect the lives of those who engage with them.
A little disappointed.......2000-03-24
I read the 1986 or 87 version of this book and am of a software/AI background. I didn't follow the biological material that well - either I was being dense or it just wasn't clearly written. I thought the book was repetitious (my chief complaint). Some of the concepts discussed include: "breakdown" (humans become aware of thing X only when something goes awry in which the X is involved), "thrownness" (humans don't rationally consider all possibilities and make perfect decisions because situations they are put in don't permit such cognition and/or we simply we aren't capable of it), "blindness" (we are always somewhat blind to the prejudicies/assumptions that guide our thinking...and we can't totally escape this predicament. Also discusses the co-routine effect (per the software world) of human affects environment and environment affects world circularity.
Illuminates the concept of a user-system system.......1999-03-31
The authors' theme is that we each react to and are changed by our environment which in turn reacts to and is changed by each of us. In the end, one can design computers only within a particular consensual domain that entails at least some commonly understood rules and concepts. The authors rely heavily on the philosophical works of Maturana and Heidegger. Difficult to read as some word meanings are developed through usage and demonstration (e.g., "throwness"). Also, quotes from references are used endlessly to substantiate their theme. This is nice but I wonder after all is done, what contributions the authors' have made and how much is simply a rehash.
Biological dependencies for cognition.......1997-11-14
This is an excellent text which describes an approach to using computers to perform an enabling role within corporate enterprises by using their ability to allow clearer understanding between participants in the workplace. The other aspect of this book looks at current methods of creating AI systems and their fundamental weaknesses. Having read this as part of my MSc. in Information Technology I have re-read it several times and I would recommend it to all those involved in complex system design, implementation and support. In addition a book such as Checklands Soft Systems Methodolgy will give a good introduction to how the systems described in Understanding Computers and Cognition can be designed to meet the demands of "real world" environments.

Truth About Addiction and Recovery

It may be time for a closer look at some of our assumptions about addiction. Between the predominance of 12-step programs and incorrect information issued by the press, thousands of people are getting misinformation instead of the help they need. Lance Dodes, in his book The Heart of Addiction, reexamines common myths and provides a world of new recommendations aimed at helping anyone with an addiction, be it to gambling, alcohol, or prescription medications. Rather than focusing on the specific object of addiction, he chooses instead to look at the common desires and emotions present in anyone with addiction issues.
Through years of private practice and work in substance-abuse clinics, Dodes has noticed a pattern behind addiction--a pattern of anger, helplessness, and shame, coupled with a desire for immediate escape from these feelings. In presenting multiple composite cases, he shows us repeatedly that addiction is more than an uncontrollable desire for the substances; it is a behavior pattern with deeply emotional roots. Included are detailed explanations of differences between physical tolerance, abuse, and addiction, as well as an unusual questionnaire that focuses on the underlying reasons for drinking, rather than the more traditional one that covers specific amounts, methods, and results of imbibing. Separate chapters discuss particular issues of teens and couples, and special recommendations for seeking treatment are also included. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Nobody has had an answer for why people with addictions continue to repeat them -- until now.
For more than twenty years, distinguished psychiatrist Dr. Lance Dodes has been successfully helping people master their addictions -- alcoholism, compulsive gambling, smoking, sexual addiction, and more with a radical approach. Dr. Dodes describes how all addictions have, at their heart, unrecognized emotional factors that explain:
- Why we feel the impulse
- Why we feel it when we do
- What alternatives (really) work in that critical moment
In this refreshing book filled with compelling case studies, Dr. Dodes debunks several such widely accepted myths as:
- Addictions are fundamentally a physical problem.
- People with addictions are different from other people.
- You have to hit bottom before you can get well.
- You are wasting your time if you ask "why" you have an addiction.

An Important Perspective.......2007-08-04
The field of addiction counseling has struggled with how to understand and treat addiction for decades. For some, addiction is best understood as a disease that can respond to the standardized treatment of detox, group work and self-help programs, AA in particular, that focus primarily on addictive behavior. For others, addiction is a behavior driven by underlying conflicts and issues that need to be addressed in a treatment process designed for each individual, one that addresses his/her specific underlying psychological dynamics. This book is a comprehensive presentation of that second perspective. It is a thorough discussion of the psychology of addiction. Whether one agrees fully with the perspecitve is less important than the importance of understanding what it contributes to efforts to develop effective intervention with persons struggling with addictive disease. This book does provides the reader with an opportunity to make that assessment.
An enlightening and straight forward examination of addiction.......2007-04-04
A respectable service to addiction by questioning tradition thoughts and treatments. Without trashing other systems, the author transers years of insight and research from his own practice into a framework that is logical, consistent and practical. He deftly removes the overtones of religion, shame and isolation that can (and has) resulted in what I call 'orphaned addicts'. His content inspires rethinking of the addictive process and yields to constructive self-examination without 'preachiness'. A safe-read for anyone who may be questioning their own addictive behavior and a must-read for those familiar with traditional addiction methods.
Swimming Upstream Against the Lords of the New Church.......2007-03-30
I stumbled onto "learned helplessness" and "empowerment seeking" years ago, well before Dodes's book was published, and found them to be useful ideas for my own recovery as well as for -some- of those I work with. The two ideas are bedrock nowadays in most of the more evidence-based (as opposed to purely AA- or bible-based or Synanon-model) treatment programs like those at the Betty Ford Center, Sierra Tucson and The Meadows.
-I- don't see THoA as anathemic or oppostional to Wilson's or "God's" work, but those who call themselves "traditionalists" in AA or bible-based recovery probably will. Absolutist, perfectionistic, black-and-white, either/or, all-or-nothing thinking is pretty much what our families of origin taught us that disempowered us and convinced us of our (learned) helplessness in the first place. Jesus of Nazareth and Bill Wilson addressed this sort of absolutism again and again in -their- work, but did so in such oblique fashion that few can (or do) wrap their minds around it as stated. I rarely see the topic (or anything much about "errors of logic" or "logical fallacies") discussed in AA meetings, even if more experienced "old timers" have picked it up somewhere and cite it in private discussions.
My own examination of Ernest Kurtz's very worthwhile writing on AA's treatment of shame and guilt at SighKoBlahGrr on Google's blogsite takes certain elements of AA and NA to task for this type of absolutism and narrowmindedness. After 29 years of involvement with AA, I see the positives there clearly outweighing the punishments, but not without som dismay. Many quote (or "parrot?") the notion that "lack of power is our dilemma" and "we drank to try to get our power back," but the concepts are usually left set in the firm concrete of quotation rather than the more useful consideration or examination of such ideas in light of our own experience.
Club AA and bible-based recovery tend to dominated by charismatic figures who appeal to such (or issue their own) unexamined, concrete edicts. In the authoritarian world of those who devised their own views from such role models in early life without (heaven forbid!) testing such theories in the real world, what the authority -says- is The Way It Is.
Dodes tackles the issue but does so more adroitly than I have managed to do, and may be able to reach some who continue to experience shame and guilt around the church rooms or the AA clubs because they have bought firmly into the notion that they should continue to "smash their egos" and -remain- powerless in a world that just doesn't work that way.
i liked it..........2006-07-25
I've been sober for 5 years thanks in part to AA, however, while this is good, i still switched my addiction to other harmful activities (gambling). Why, I wondered, could I seem to repress one addiction and another pops up in its place. Ridiculous, who am I fooling, I thought? I need something more.
I see addiction switching as a prevalent occurrence among AA members. - Sometimes less obvious but still there in attitude or action. When the "new" addiction still inhibits growth then what? That's where I was at until I said, "OK I can keep fooling myself or I can look deeper. As such I went to psychiatrist who gave me this book to read. It offered insight and thats what I need that it isn't and hasn't been just a character issue. Never thought it was deep inside.
Believe it or not I was trying to "help" myself overcome "helplessness" by drinking. ADD, recently diagnosed, has made the most sense to me as to why I drank. I couldn't and still don't buy into this business of powerlessness (I'm not an automoton) and I rebelled everytime I was told that's what was needed. - When I entered AA, I kind of said to myself "OK you believe what you want but I just need to talk to people". This is what most helped me to open up. - AA is good for that at least. And it still offers that for me.
Addiction isn't a simple matter and it doesn't go away just because you stop one type. This book offered me a flashlight to see what can be done.
I understand the powerless business advocated in AA but its not good enough for me at least. I am a thinking person for pete sakes. I have free-will.
3 stars because it didn't solve all my issues. Expect a lot, huh?
extremely helpful.......2006-04-13
I consider this book a must-read for anybody involved in this instant-gratification society. I abused alcohol in my 20s to the point of 100 beers a week, plus booze. A few years ago I kicked it by myself - no books, no meetings, no AA. Doctors told me it would be impossible to do without AA. I could never walk into a bar again. Well I do go to bars - for association, occasional fried, greasy food, and to shoot darts. I drink Pepsi. I guess it's just easy for me. When I found and read this book I was astonished how I felt exactly as the author did. Maybe AA works for some people but I find it to be a cult I wish to have nothing to do with. I simply don't agree that people must admit being powerless over their addiction. Why hand your power over to intangible gobbledegook? Dodes is to be commended for his research and well-written prose that can be understood by anyone from 16-96.

Insightfully clarifying!.......2007-09-07
I found this perspective to be solid and sensible. I am blessed by it.
It was in Hebrew not Aramaic, stupid........2007-08-27
The book is based on the premise that Jesus spoke in Hebrew, not Aramaic, and that his words had been first recorded in Hebrew before they were translated into Greek. The authors justify their position by pointing to many expressions in the gospels, which don't make sense either in English or in the original Greek, but which make perfect sense when they are traced back to idiomatic Hebrew. They argue that their translation into Greek, and later into other languages, caused them to lose their original meaning and to become incomprehensible.
They explain away the famous Aramaic "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani," that Jesus supposedly uttered from the cross in Mark's Gospel as having been misheard or misquoted. It should have been "Eli, Eli..." they insist, which is Hebrew for "God, God..." but could also have been understood as a diminutive for Elija. Their opinions are in some agreement with the more recent belief that in Jesus' day Judeans spoke in Hebrew to each other, in Aramaic to people in more distant parts of the Middle East, and in Greek to gentiles in general. On the other hand, each gospel places different words in Jesus' mouth while on the cross, from which we can conclude that all these words are creations of the evangelists, not history. So why did Mark think that Jesus would have spoken in Aramaic? The authors neither ask nor answer this question. In any case, according to them, the strange syntax of the gospels resulted from the translations of earlier Hebrew writings into Greek. But again the authors miss the point that the syntax would have been no different had the gospels been written directly in Greek by people whose mother tongue was Hebrew.
Perhaps a third of this short book is directed to proving the Hebrew origin of the gospels. The rest, and far more interesting part, examines some of the more difficult-to-explain sayings of Jesus, and how they make sense when translated back into the alleged original idiomatic Hebrew.
This short book should be read by all who are interested in what Jesus may have actually said and meant. It could also form the basis of short Bible Study group discussions.
(The writer is the author of "Christianity Without Fairy Tales: When Science And Religion Merge," and of the forthcoming "The Way of the Butterfly: A Scientific Speculation on God and the Hereafter.")
Good Start.......2007-07-20
This is a good start for those just learning that Jesus needs to be seen as a Jew and Hebrew. Bivin's other book on Jesus's Words is better because it goes into fuirther detail regarding what is in this book.
Eye-Opener.......2007-03-08
Truely a work based on historic facts that opens your eyes to understanding who Jesus is.
Bold and Insightful.......2006-04-11
This book is a persuasive argument for the Hebraic background to the gospel writings.
The preliminary argument actually defends the claim that the gospels themselves were written in Hebrew, not Aramaic, and only later translated into Greek. The argument against Aramaic is detailed, and I am not at all versed in Aramaic so as to respond to it. At some points it seems forced, as when the authors argue that Jesus' words on the cross, "Eloi," (Aramaic) were actually "Eli" (Hebrew), leading to the claim that he was calling Elijah (p. 10). It would be just as reasonable to assume that his hearers mistook what he was saying and assumed he was calling Elijah.
Furthermore, the two-page response to the Greek theory (p. 14-16), seems absurd, given that our only extant manuscripts are Greek. That only one counter-argument is given seems like the authors are avoiding the obvious. Furthermore, there are obvious plays on Greek words in the gospels, as with Peter's conversation with Jesus after the resurrection and the play on varying forms of the word "love," only true in Greek. The authors are not arguing merely that the authors were from a Hebrew context, but that their writings themselves were Hebrew. Given that Greek was the standard language of diplomacy in the first century, this seems ridiculous.
Still, the Hebraic background to the texts was clearly in the minds of the authors. Even if they wrote in Greek, that they were translating Hebrew idioms still seems likely (even if not in print). The first few chapters simply belabor an unnecessary argument, while Chapter 5 (p. 53-65), is the most valuable. Here, the Hebrew idioms are exposed and translated. The meaning of offering your peace to a house (p. 57) is infinitely more clear given the Judaic context of the text.
Chapter 6, an analysis of a couple of potential theological errors that can stem from misunderstanding the nature of the text, is fascinating. I like the argument that Jesus was not intending a strict pacifism (p. 67-72) and that he didn't intend an unwise generosity when he talked about giving (p. 72-75).
The appendix is a wealth of sermon material for the particular texts addressed. It plunges into the possible Hebrew intentions to verses which seem senseless in English and even in Greek. Sometimes I am not entirely compelled by their exegesis, since, for instance, the phrase "cast out your bad name" (p. 115) is not radically different than what we assume it meant in the English. Nonetheless, there are some priceless revelations here, such as the meaning of the tittle on the jot, the mark on the top of the yod.
All considered, I like the direction of the book, though it would be more compelling if they had spent more time on theological ramifications and less time arguing for an implausible nature of non-extant texts. In the end, I found myself simply wishing the book was longer.

If you are a mother and many of your conversations with your teenage daughter begin with a rolling of eyes, move into shrieked insults, and end with a door slam, I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You! could save you both. As Roni Cohen-Sandler and Michelle Silver illustrate, even if you often seem to be living on two different planets, conflict does not have to define your relationship.
Cohen-Sandler, a clinical psychologist specializing in issues of women and adolescent girls, and Silver, senior editor of Girls' Life magazine, have done mothers a great service with this thoroughly researched book. Their main point is simple: arguments are bound to occur, but if approached correctly, confrontation can actually lead to deeper mutual understanding and a stronger mother-daughter bond. Consistently working through battles also demonstrates a sense of constancy that will offer good lessons for future relationships. Through case studies, exercises, and detailed scenarios, the authors describe the most effective ways to communicate about such loaded topics as dating, sexuality, drugs and alcohol, and peer pressure, paying particular attention to the "classic battle starters": the state of her bedroom, her clothing, and her makeup and jewelry choices. Other in-depth chapters focus on the right and wrong ways to respond to verbal attacks and the importance of choosing battles wisely. Some of their advice will not be easy to follow, especially when the fight is on, but if some effort is exerted, these tips should help mothers and daughters not only survive, but even enjoy, the teen years.
Book Description
Almost without exception, the teen years are tumultuous for both girls and their mothers. Teen girls, who are socialized to stifle their anger and avoid confrontation, frequently take out their frustration on their mothers as the only safe and available targets. The good news is that with patience and the right guidance, mothers can transform the teenage years into positive ones and enrich the mother- daughter relationship. "I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You!" combines the expertise of a clinical psychologist (who has worked with women and adolescent girls for more than twenty years) with that of a senior editor at a leading teen magazine. The book demonstrates how mother-daughter friction during adolescence, managed creatively, empowers girls by teaching them invaluable skills and can even foster intimacy. Discussion of social, emotional, cultural, and psychological issues is interwoven with the voices of mothers and daughters in case studies that are illuminating and reassuring. In the wake of widely popular books exposing the perils adolescent girls face, "I'm Not Mad, I Just Hate You!" provides mothers with much-needed practical strategies to help their daughters grow into emotionally healthy and capable adults. At the same time, women will encourage loving and lifelong connections with their daughters.

What a relief!.......2007-03-28
This past summer my husband and I were devastated with our 16 yr old daughter's sudden behavior change. It was horrible. I went on Amazon to try and find some books on parenting teens in today's day and found this one. What a relief! As I was reading the case studies I cried, I swore they were some of my experiences word for word. If anything this book gave me comfort in knowing that I was not crazy and I was not alone. It also gave examples of the appropriate way to respond to different situations(in addition to counseling and a lot of praying). I've since recommended this book to our pastor and two other mothers who had sudden similar experiences. This is a must read for any mother with a teenage daughter!
highly recommended for parents of teen girls.......2006-06-03
I really learned alot from this book & plan on reading it again. It helped me adjust my parenting techniques with my 13 year old daughter and also made me feel better about myself. I have told many people to read this book, it is very well written and really helps a parent with the adolecent girl.
Great advice if your kids perfect already!.......2003-02-19
I wouldn't have bought this book if I wasn't dealing with a VERY defiant, and manipulative teenage daughter--so when this book assumes that I can just say the right thing and everything will be fine, is an absolute joke! This advice would be great if it worked as simply as the book says. But if you already have a tough kid, these tips are NOT going to suddenly make her see the logic in my rules. Kids don't care about the explaination of why it's wrong to dress trashy or wear too much makeup...they want what they want. This book assumes that your kid obeys you in the first place! The title really drew me in--I thought that I had finally found a book that understood what I am going through. But it's just another below-average parenting book with a catchy title!
No, I'm not going crazy!.......2000-12-20
I thought I going was nuts, not knowing how to parent my pre-teen. At last, a book to let me know I was not going crazy by myself, that it is perfectly normal what we are going through, why I as the mom am the target and spring board for her growing up. It also gives ideas on how to rethink parenting, your responses to issues. It shows why "I" the mom am the only one, cuz I'm the closest one to her, that she is 'experimenting with life' off of. I don't feel so alone, I'm okay, and can see why I get the backwash, and the testing. I highly recommend this book to other moms and also dads too, so they can understand the battle while they watch from the sidelines.
best book re teenage girls.......2000-03-08
At a time when I was ready to give up on being a mother till my teen "grew up", this book was a godsend. My feelings of desperation, confusion, loss, and wondering where I went wrong were all validated. I have already started trying techniques recommended. Even if it doesn't change my daughter, my perception has changed so that I'm better able to cope. Very readable (not a bunch of jargon) I'd recommend it to any mother of a teenage girl. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because there were no illustrations. Of course, as an adult I don't have to have them, but I like them. Sometimes a well-placed cartoon helps to illustrate a point. It may be the authors thought illustrations are inappropriate for their book.

A Headache in the Pelvis.......2007-08-27
An excellent resource for anyone who suffers with pain due to Pelvic Floor Disfunction. I found this book to be very informative. It is written in layman's terms so you don't have to be a medical professional to understand it. PFD is a syndrome that effects millions of people worldwide, many of whom are at their wits end as to what to do to find relief. This book will help them understand what they have and what they can do to help themselves. I would highly recommend it to anyone with PFD as well as their spouses, partners or caregivers.
A Life-Changing Read for Those with Pelvic Pain.......2007-05-29
To all those suffering with CPPS/Prostatitis: You must give yourself the gift of reading this book. It is the scripture of the new paradigm for treating chronic pelvic pain. Most importantly, it was written by someone who had actually suffered for years with pelvic pain and, by using the techniques introduced in the book, freed himself from chronic pain. For an author to be able to say to a reader, "I have been where you are", creates overwhelming trust and compassion that is felt throughout this book.
I write this review with the utmost confidence because I, too, suffered with pelvic pain for several years, and was misdiagnosed with "prostatitis" over and over again, as many men have been for years. When I read this book, I just knew it was the truth, because it spoke so fully to every aspect of my condition, both physically, mentally, and emotionally. I committed myself to doing the protocol described in the book, and attended one of the monthly clinics that the authors run. In short, all of my pelvic pain symptoms have completed abated after following the protocol, and in many ways I feel that my overall health is even better than before my pain started, as so much of the protocol taught in the book possesses benefits far beyond healing pelvic pain.
The truth taught in a Headache in the Pelvis has now become scientifically validated -- two recent studies using the AHIP protocol have been published in the JOURNAL UROLOGY and show symptom improvement results in patients like no other studies in the field. AHIP has also recently been featured in an article in Best Life magazine, written by an experienced journalist who found amazing relief from his pelvic pain by using the techniques found in AHIP.
In years to come I know the field of urology will look back on this book as the most groundbreaking treatise on how to help patients find relief from all of the pelvic pain conditions. If I could buy this book for every pelvic pain sufferer out there I would because I know intimately how it can change one's life.
Groundbreaking, revolutionary, visionary!.......2007-05-25
This expanded edition is superb! Although mainly aimed at a male audience suffering chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, this edition includes information relevant to females as well. In summary, this 4th edition adds 63 pages to the 3rd edition. It expands the illustrated discussion of trigger point release. It discusses developments in the home treatment and self-trigger point release program. There are more stories of patients who have undergone the Stanford Protocol. There is a discussion of neurogenic inflammation of the bladder, anxiety, inflammation and interstitial cystitis. There is discussion of other conditions of mucosal inflammation paralleling inflammation of the bladder, the healing of the bladder, the usefulness of cystoscopy. The book contains more illustrations of the location of trigger points and offers a comprehensive illustrated discussion of female pelvic floor physical therapy including locations of female pelvic pain related trigger points, discusses pregnancy and pelvic pain. Lastly, this edition investigates the relationship between emotions and pelvic pain, and other related topics.
Sadly, Amazon has "lost" all the glowing comments and 5-star reviews given to the last edition due to a glitch in Amazon's system. I've copied some of the comments on the last edition of this book for your information. Highly recommended!

Their description of this very private pain was DEAD ON. Their analogy of the pain and the cause is DEAD ON. These authors understand my symptoms and one of the authors has suffered them at least as long as I have. If you have Prostititis you would probably travel miles just to hear or read about someone who can simply describe what you are GOING THROUGH!! My doctor didn`t know what it was or what treatment were effective either and I was just given meds to take daily just because. And he was the GOOD GOOD Doctor! One Urologist charged me $500 to tell me that he could not afford to treat me. So far this has been the only ray of hope for me and the pain is leaving. Hey guys it even explains why you have been curled up in fetal position in your bed crying totally uninteresting in going outside, smiling, talking, moving and cursing sex in agony or masturbating furiously for a moment of release or cursing the idea of life because a demon as been eating at your privates 24/7 365 secretly for a decade. Why does stress and depression seem to make your symptoms worse? Why have you been withdrawing? It is all here and WOMEN ARE WELCOME HERE. You are discussed also. This is no way to live. The self hatred is not yours you are ill. Listen to what these 2 have to say to you.
An extraordinary book that really helps !!, January 6, 2007
By Frequent Reader "Frequent Reader" (Northeast, USA)
A Headache in the Pelvis which describes the new treatment for pelvic pain developed at Stanford University is the best book anybody could read who is suffering from pelvic pain. I have read all the editions and just finished the 4th edition which includes treatment for women as well as men. Wise and Anderson are the pioneers in this treatment. I can't praise this book enough!!!
Women need this advice too, November 16, 2006
By E. Edgerton (Syracuse, NY) - (REAL NAME)
Just a quick comment: It is too bad that this book focuses primarily on males. Female pelvic floor problems are also described and occasionally dealt with, but it would be nice if future editions of this book contained diagrams or chapters geared toward women. Women suffering with these problems really need to know about these techniques too.

This book has assisted me in understanding some of the cause of my discomfort. I found the book a little difficult to follow, but after a few times reading the same thing it made sense.
A Worth Read and an Uplifter, July 13, 2006
By buddah_sack "buddah_sack" (california)
Friends, I suffered from Prostadynia over 10 years ago ( 24 age) and it lasted for two years. The pain was mostly in my right teste and it was very bothersome. I went to a few urologists and they ran the gamet of many different tests on me. In the end, I was told that i had no infection and that it was non-bacterial prostititus. One even told me I had a cyst on the right testicle. Alot of medical talk with no answers. Eventually I started to heal my self using exercise, biking, and just relaxation. I made the effort to heal my self through my own ways and experimentation Mind you my pain use to be so bad that I would be in tears sometimes. But i made myself get through it. This last year, I went through a bunch of bad stuff in my life and the pain came back slightly but enough to bother me. I was so upset and knew i had to relax. However, this time around, my life problems were so different and I felt that I did not have the right tools to deal with my pain. Enter this book. About a week ago, I picked up this book. All i have to say is WOW! MAny times while reading it, I shake my head and go "yup" i know that feeling. It's been about a week now, I have noticed about a 50% cut in my groin pain. The exercises help ALOT and so do the relaxation methods. Breathing, accepting the tension, allowing your body to communicate with you...these are very crucial in getting better. Look, if your going to drop money on Doctors to keep examining you or are contemplating suregery. Give this book a chance.
I found this book to be very useful and great. There is hope. Trust me. This book helped me again and if anything is a good read.
A ray of hope, June 8, 2006

Finally, a book that gives a ray of hope to pelvic pain sufferers.
Thank you Dr. Wise
This book is the first step on the journey to healing pelvic pain, June 3, 2006
By John Bartok "JohnB" (CA)
Drs. Wise and Anderson's "A Headache in The Pelvis" is a remarkable book outlining a pioneering new treatment for a number of widespread forms of pelvic pain. These conditions, which the authors refer to as a "headache in the pelvis", have often been routinely misdiagnosed and ineffectively treated, and have affected millions of men and women from all corners of this good globe. This is a book that describes a method to treat this condition for which the authors have published far better results than conventional treatments. The protocol of "A Headache in the Pelvis" was developed by these Stanford researchers, one of whom suffered from pelvic pain for many years and this method came out of his search to finally help himself. It is very unusual for those in the healing profession to offer a treatment that comes from the ancient injunction for the physician to heal thyself. And this is what makes the book so compelling. The book describes this method in an easy to understand and well outlined format suitable for the least sophisticated reader. It is organized with easily referenced sections that take the reader, step by step, through the origins of the condition, the history of other treatments and finally to details of the treatment. If the journey of healing pelvic pain is a thousand miles long, and begins with a single step, then buying this book is clearly the first.
This is a great book, May 31, 2006

This is a remarkable book. The guys who wrote this book are pioneers in offering any real help for the problem of pelvic pain. Their results speak for themselves. I think most people who suffer from chronic pelvic pain will find this book to be the first thing that makes any sense. Bravo for this book.
Mind/body medicine at its best, May 30, 2006
By C. B. Simmons (Emeryville, CA United States)(REAL NAME)
This is an inspiring book. As a psychiatrist and physician educator interested in the body/mind connection, I have been looking for clinical applications of meditation and awareness training in the field of medicine. Despite very sophisticated studies proving the benefits of meditation and relaxation exercises, very few clinicians seem to be writing about their direct work with patients. This book is an inspiring example of how these new principles can be used for treating chronic pelvic pain syndromes. The success rate reported in the medical literature of these Stanford researchers is very exciting. I was very appreciative of the author's personal disclosure. As healers and clinicians heal themselves, they bring a special sensitivity to their work. These authors' sensitivity and respect for the deep suffering in their clients' lives pervades the book, and makes it unique among mind-body medicine books. I enthusiastically recommend this book for caring clinicians as well as people in pain looking for relief from their suffering.
Unhelpful Freudian approach.......2007-05-24
This book is full of UN-helpful ideas, like pain is caused by being uptight, by sexual shame, or by unfufillment. It is very old-fashioned and unscientific, like it was written by a "quack." Who cares what came first - pain or depression? YOU know you have a physical pain that needs to be addressed. If you want to try trigger point therapy, look for a better book than this one (Clair Davies is good). If you want to try relaxation techniques, look for a better book or take a class. If you want to try medication, I found major relief with the prescription Effexor. This book is not at all helpful.

Product Description
Understanding Wine Technology was originally written for students of the diploma examination of the Wines & Spirits Education Trust in the United Kingdom, and the Master of Wine examination as set by the Institute of Masters of Wine. However, this is the only book to explain the complexities of the science and technology of wine in simple terms, and therefore fills a gap in the large market of wine information by making wines technical mysteries accessible to those with no scientific education. This new edition brings the literature up-to-date, relaying in its plainspoken tradition the recent advances in wine science and technology. The topics covered range from the secrets of the vineyard, the processing of grapes to produce juice, the intricacies of fermentation, stabilization of the resulting wine, treatments, quality control and quality assurance, and bottling.

Wine science for non-winemakers.......2007-09-03
I am a wine professional (non-winemaker) who wanted to understand better the science behind making wine in preparation for the WSET Diploma and possibly MW. This book was perfect! As others have said, it is approachable by a non-scientist, but without being "dumbed-down". I keep it as a reference source for any basic oenology questions that come along.
Understanding Wine Technology: The Science of Wine Explained, New Edition .......2007-08-14
I have been in the sales end of the wine business for nearly 20 years, in restaurants and wholesale / supply end. This is a great tool to take your knowledge a step further than just what you learn from tastings. Easy to understand and well structured format, it gives the wine enthusiast insight into the "whys" of wine.
Wine Technology Made Simple.......2007-01-10
This is a very clear and straightforward description of the winemaking process and the choices winemakers have to make when buying equipment and choosing among alternative process. Anyone who wants to delve into how wine goes from grapes to wine will find this book a valuable read and will clearly understand all the various and many choices winemakers have to make. In addition to interested observers it will also be found useful by the home winemaker.
One of the best winemaking books.......2007-01-09
Exellent introduction to the scientific approach to winemaking. To be recomended. jbroe
well written but not quite comprehensive.......2006-01-27
Clearly written and a quick read, but don't be fooled: there is a lot of solid technical information here, including one of the best published reviews of filtration, and an excellent overview of additives. Clarity here is due to good writing and careful exposition, not by dumbing down the topic. The book was written for classroom use, for instance by students preparing for the WSET Diploma Examination, and also succeeds as a text for someone who understands the basics of winemaking but wants to know the why as well as the what.
However, the chapter on fermentation is a bit brief for its intended role as a textbook, and faults merit only a few pages. A lack of a bibliography (other than a few scattered references to journal articles) also counts against it. I recommend supplementing with another text such as Rankine's "Making Good Wine" (ISBN 140503601X) or a reference work such as Jackson's "Wine Science".
(Note: A newer edition is now available, it might address some of the above criticisms.)
This is a book worth owning and reading, but it will not provide all the answers.

The Last Word. N.T. Wright........2007-03-26
In this volume, N.T. Wright's two anchoring themes are (1) the authority of Christian canon, i.e., as a standard measure, and (2) the imperfection of our understanding of the canon, i.e., the importance of humility in cooperating with scripture's philology in finding its intent. Knowledge of scripture is, in many instances, permanently tentative (as is scientific knowledge) and proceeds along lines that are better recognized as being iterative and partial than immediate or whole. Christian humility and 'teachability' demands as much, as do the ubiquitous exegetical disputes and the inherent subtleties and mysteries of ancient texts whose impulsion was 'beyond' its human penmen. To paraphrase this view in my own clumsy way - "stop pretending you've got it all figured out and start studying so as to be taught, instead of 'studying' to support your delusions of final insights." With apologies to Wright for my paraphrase, I heartily agree with him. It's a bit interesting that Wright chose the title that he did; by it he can only mean that "the Last Word" is the final import of scripture, not that he, or anyone else, can provide a final interpretation or exposition of the Last Word.
Wright on the relationship of Christian scripture and Christian tradition: "The challenge of living with tradition is not so much, as in official Roman Catholic understandings, that one should let tradition and scripture flow together straightforwardly into a single stream, but that tradition should be allowed to be itself; that is, the living voice of the very human church as it struggles with scripture, sometimes misunderstanding it and sometimes gloriously getting it right. That is why the challenge comes fresh to each generation. Traditions tell us where we have come from. Scripture itself is a better guide as to where we should now be going." p 119
It is true that some of Wright's work is a kind of flash-point in some scholarly circles, Christian and otherwise -- too orthodox for some, too liberal for others, not Calvinist enough for the heavy-handed determinists, not Roman enough for the 'one true church' audience, and so forth. But all of this speaks to the level-headed carefulness of his theology and biblical scholarship. If, on some point(s) you find that you disagree with Wright, I hope that you can do so with the intellectual openness and spiritual humility that characterize this author; if you are a Bible-thumping know-it-all, then you need this book more than most of us do. Thank God for N.T. Wright.
A Concise Exposition of Anglican Theological Thinking.......2007-03-09
N. T. Wright continues to be a voice of centrist sense within the roil of contemporary Christian controversies. This clear, concise exposition of the traditional Anglican "via media" is a very useful primer, or refresher, on how Anglicans balance the threads of Scripture, Tradition, and human reason. The objective is to understand how to live out the Christian call, and how to understand timeless lessons in a rapidly changing world. I've loaned my copy to several friends across the Christian belief spectrum as a clear and fairly concise summary of how my branch of Christ's church lives in to our call.
A good but brief treatment on the authority of scripture.......2007-01-30
Tom Wright wrote an article "How can the bible be authoritative" for Vox Evangelica in 1991. This book flushes out the themes in more detail and provides some more historial context. The title might be a bit misleading since a "new understanding" could mean recovering an older understanding. My perspective is that the title is not as alarming as it sounds. What I have always appreciated about Tom Wright is that he is able defend his orthodox christian views using rigorous academic methods. Sure, he is often critized by both sides. So the conservative christians accuse him of not being fully orthodox, while the academics accuse him of compromising his rigor due to his personal faith. Regardless of one's theology position, this book should be a worthwhile read. A more detailed treatment is contained in "NT and the people of god". It is only in my second reading that I am appreciating and starting to understand the book. So for those of you who would like more depth, I would recommend "NT and the people of god". If you are interested in the subject of the authority of scripture, you might also be interested in reading more on narrative theology and the emerging/emergent church movement.
Happy reading.
Wright is Worth the Read!.......2007-01-24
Wright cuts through the noise in the North American biblical scholarship debate. He knocks the legs out from under "conservatives" and "liberals" and offers us a solid foundation of good hermeneutics. He explains why both "sides" are missing the mark and how we can get back on the right track. Good book!
Read Paul: In Fresh Perspective for a better glimpse into N.T. Wright's wonderful contributions and insights into New Testament scholarship.
A Bit Thin.......2007-01-12
Having read his thoroughly naratived approach in Jesus and the Victory of God I was expecting something more substanial. Given that most reading of the scriptures is first devotional and personal the corporate/hierarchical conclusion seemed lopsided.
