Book Description
The riotously funny story of one weekend golfer who lived the dreamdevoting a full year to nothing but the quixotic quest to qualify at the PGA Q-School
A lifelong golfer and former caddy, Tom Coyne could drive the ball 300 yards but always struggled against stiff competition; he had often wondered whether the pros won because they were more innately talented or just because they were more obsessed. On the cusp of turning thirty, overweight, and saddled with a 14 handicap, Coyne embarked on a yearlong quest to do everything he could to lift his gameand find out if he could make it through the PGA Tour Qualifying School.
Paper Tiger takes you on a rollicking ride into the beer-gutted underbelly of semipro golf, into a world of crash diets, punishing workout regimens, high-flying sports shrinks, cutting-edge club technology, and obscure tournaments. With his girlfriend as caddy, Coyne traverses from Miami to Chicago to Toronto to see how he stacks up against the competition. Ultimately he takes his game to a new levelor at least a new continenton the links of Australian Q-School, where amidst forty-mile-an-hour winds he must choose between the love of a fickle game and the love of the long-suffering woman who has stood by him throughout all the shanks, hooks, yips, and chili dips.
Brimming with humor and insight about the world's most beautiful and maddening game, Paper Tiger will delight golfers and the sane people who love them. BACKCOVER:

If you like golf you will love this book...if you don't you will also.......2007-09-08
Tom Coyne has a wonderful book here. I ended up laughing more times then I can count reading it. He has such a smooth style about his writing that it will wrap you up and make you want to keep reading. Reading this book you will laugh, be shocked, and amazed at what is going on. I highly recommend this book to any golfers out there or any one who has dared to follow their dreams.
delusional golfer.......2007-07-04
this guys claims to have a plus handicap but shoots plus 40 in every tourney
Paper Tiger.......2007-06-09
Nicely written and an interesting story. It accurately describes how difficult it is to get to the PGA Tour and how GOOD the players truly are. If Tiger Woods had a handicap, his would be a +9. He would give a scratch player a stroke on every other hole.......
A Golfer's Manifesto - Divine!.......2007-04-18
I don't begin to pretend to know the first thing about golf, but Tom Coyne's book is a delight to read. If you have any golfers in your life, this is a must read! It is a delightful account of the trials and tribulations of pursuing a dream, going for a goal - and universally relatable.
Tom's tone is unique - light hearted in the face of adversity and struggle. The novel details everything from weight and handicaps, to relationships with family and friends. As he lives in Philadelphia now, any Philly golf lovers will be able to relate as he details his training and preparation, and it's always nice to know the place that an author is speaking of.
I can't wait until his next book comes out - "A Course Called Ireland" which is in progress now.
Golf and Fun.......2007-04-12
Golf junkies will love this quest for Q-school and the hilarity the author finds in day-to-day situations. You'll find a new respect for professional golfers.
Book Description
At work, people deal with piles of forms, files, folders, and mail but they have no system in place for the non-stop barrage of paper that lands on everyone’s work stations; or if they do have a system, it is one that does not work very well. This book offers solutions to the paper-piling problems that inhibit productivity.

This is it!.......2001-11-16
I have read at least a dozen books on how to get organized, at work or in general. As a professional with a private office, I have found this book the most helpful, inspirational, and practical among those. The language is neither condescending nor folksy; the principles are clearly stated and summarized; and all advice is eminently applicable. Now I have all my office files in half a drawer and I can produce any document within seconds. The author does not require you to clean up your office in one day: you are allowed to start from today's paper piles and work backwards as needed. We procrastinators are now officially out of excuses.
It worked for me.......2001-06-26
It takes time but going through the process outlined for filing information has helped. I have organized my files, both paper and computer, so I can find things in seconds instead of hours or days.
I would have given the book 5 stars but I thought there was a little "fluff" added that wasn't neccesary.
Overall a great book for those who tend to need some help getting organized at work.
Barbara Hemphill helped tame my tiger!.......2000-10-19
I was not near as bad as some of the cases Barbara describes in her books, but I was pretty pathetic! I was over a year behind reconciling my checkbook, paid bills late and my finances were in a mess, because my home papers were in such disarray! I felt so out of control, I didn't know where to start. I finally spent a weekend going through 7 boxes of papers I'd moved around for years, set up files, etc. Then I found Taming the Paper Tiger. Barbara covered things from setting up a workable space to how to organize action and storage files. I now have a terrific credit rating, run the family budget, have NO stacks of unidentifiable papers, mail greeting cards timely, and even get photos mailed out to the inlaws. I have recommended this book to several friends and family members. You simply cannot run your life successfully without managing your papers. God bless Barbara Hemphill!
I would have given it 5, but I misplaced a star........1999-06-18
Some are blessed with amazing organizational abiities.
Some of us are organizationally impaired ... or go through spurts of organization followed by piles of paper and inefficiency.
Hemphill's "Paper Tiger" takes you through the steps of organizing information from the philosophical ("Clutter is postponed decisions") to the practical (setting up filing systems, organizing computer files) to the special circumstances (attending conventions, sharing offices, working on the road or home).
She offers concrete, easy to remember tips for getting started (think F*A*T for each piece of paper), and then provides info on more complex tasks. You can pick up this book, turn to the sections that apply to you, or read it all the way through. Regardless of how you use the book, or the level of your organizational skills, you'll gain valuable tips for getting better organized.
Book Description
At home, people deal with piles of bills, magazines, receipts, and junk mail but they have no system in place for the non-stop barrage of paper that enters the house. This book taps into this problem and offers easy-to-follow guidelines on filing, labeling, recordkeeping, and living clutter-free.

Help for Paper Overload.......2006-01-31
I'd read Barbara Hemphill's earlier book and was glad to see she's expanded it into two books now with the focus on work and home. Being a chronic paper hoarder means rereading this book occasionally before the paper overwhelms me.
She really understands what needs organizing and streamlined, from messages to catalogs, recipes, photos, bills, tax records and the endless stream of paper that flows through our lives. Setting up the systems to handle our troublesome paper clutter brings relief. Some of it you know already, and just need a reminder, but other tips give new ways to handle the growing piles of paper.
Very practical.
New Hope for my Cluttered Desk.......2005-03-13
As a pastor, husband, father and caregiver to an ailing mother, I have more than my share of paperwork to manage at home. Hemphill has given me new hope that I can tame the paper tiger stalking on my increasingly cluttered desk! Her techniques are simple, easy to use and to understand. For anyone who is dealing with mountains of paperwork and is frustrated as a result, this title is a must-read!
Thank you.......2004-01-29
I really appreciate any good book on organization. I would like to thank the author for her great advice on how to divide and conquer your "action" papers. This book is a nice complement to "File, Don't Pile" which gives much more detail on how to organize your other paper mess which is your reference files. I recommend both.
On and Organizational Kick..........2002-07-22
I would have rated this book higher if it had been the first book I read about organization. However, I purchased 5 at the same time while on a work space organizational kick. I read Organizing Your Workspace by Odette Pollar first as it states it's a quick read. Paper Tiger gave the same basic organization structure as Pollar's book, but with a more interesting and real tone than Pollar. However, Paper Tiger spent the second half of the book on the big picture of organizational organization, the home office, computer files, and long term maintenance of the filing system. Things I'm not interested in right now that I am in the overwhelming start of a new organizational process. This info may be helpful to me in a few months when I have established a routine and can concentrate on long term maintenance. I would have found more practical time saver tips and starting advise a better help.
Excellent.......2000-03-08
I first borrowed this book from the library then went out an bought it for future reference. I was already using many of the processes explained but it has reinforced what I was doing and aided in clearing out the last of the paper mess in my life.

Jane Frank examines all aspects of BerkeyÂ's work, with more than 100 color illustrations drawn from all periods of his career-including personal illustrations painted for his own artistic satisfaction. Berkey himself contributes an autobiographical introduction. ÂHis wonderfully facile style is the perfect balance between painterly impressionism and hard-edged realism.ÂÂVincent Di Fate, Infinite Worlds.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent artwork.......2006-08-25
I used to think of John Berkey as just a sci-fi artist. But after viewing this book its clear Berkey is quite simply an excellent artist on all levels. What I find masterful about his work is that upon close viewing you see that he uses simple brush strokes for his approach. Yet, when viewed from a distance his art appears as detailed as any photograph I've seen. This is what it means to be a true artist: Being able to convey a clearly conceived and well-executed idea while maintaining an original sense of style and technique. Mr Berkey's work should be viewed by all, whether sci-fi fan or not.
An excellent chronicle.......2004-02-29
For those of you who were inspired by John Berkey's fantastic visions of the future decades ago, you will find continued inspiration in Jane Frank's new book, The Art of John Berkey. This book complements the earlier Painted Space book well, but stands on its own as a serious work about John Berkey. Several pages of autobiographical notes from Mr. Berkey himself followed by several chapters chronicling the many phases of Berkey's remarkable career. Back before computers, Berkey mastered the brush, inferring technological complexity with only minimal strokes in a way few other artists can. He ranks high along with legendary futurist artists like Syd Mead and Ralph McQuarrie. The book is beautifully printed, with lush colorful pages that bring Berkey's paintings to life. I recommend you purchase this book-it will take you on a fantastical journey you will want to come back to time and again.

Brom’s potent brand of sinister, disturbing imagery comes to life through a selection of his very best work of recent years. In addition to covers from best-selling novels by Terry Brooks and Anne McCaffrey, there are illustrations for comic books (Batman); movies (Galaxy Quest and Sleepy Hollow); computer games (Doom II), and collectible cards (ICE’s Lord of the Rings). More than 120 haunting images.

A Brilliant Showcase of a Modern Master's Work.......2007-08-08
Brom stacks up as one of the most brilliant fantasy artists working today, and this book shows why. Within you will find beautiful maidens, dastardly villains, valiant heroes, vile beasts, and all manner of other characters fair and foul - each and every one of them marked with the twisted vision of Brom. Brom's art has the ability to send a chill down your spine no matter what image you might happen to be looking at - there is almost always an element of the unsettling in a Brom painting, of impending doom or contagion, and every painting yields something new to look at with each viewing. Another quality inherent in Brom's work is his ability to make the viewer wonder about his images, and construct stories around his characters in his head - you may find yourself engrossed as you construct motivations, origins, and storylines as you flip through this book. Those looking for an excellent book of fantasy art with just the right twinge of horror would well to pick up "Offerings."
Great Collection - but not as good as Darkwerks.......2005-03-06
This is a good collection of Brom's art... but if you are thinking of buying a Brom book... buy 'Darkwerks' before you buy this book.
The art in this collection is more mature and refined in comparison with Brom's Darkwerks collection, but is lacking in quantity and the spontaniety of his card art.
He is one of the few artists who rarely uses reference material whilst painting. This approach is evident due to the fact that a lot of the figures have comic-book figure proportions -- which is admirable in this day in age where painters trace from photos.
Verdict: Buy Brom's Darkwerks first, buy this after.

Offering is Appropriate.......2002-06-05
This book is truly amazing and Brom has outdone himself again. The paintings are very interesting and depict situations that my mind would have never discovered on its own. One word of caution... though this is great art, it is women unfriendly. What I mean by this is that the females are generally depicted in painful situations that seem to take away from their beauty. I would highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to view dark and powerful fantasy settings and people/creatures. Amazing work!
Darkness incarnate.......2001-11-06
This is Broms second book, his artwork is more mature than that in Darkwerks and perhaps a little less immediate, but never take a Brom picture at face value, even the classically beautiful images have something unpleasant lurking in the background. Fans of Brom will be glad to know that is more of the excellent, if somewhat disturbed work of perhaps the best fantasy illustrator working today. BUY IT !!

Book Description
“More than any individual author, Richard Powers showed the public that science fiction could be written by intelligent adults, for intelligent adults. His superior aesthetics...still overshadow most rivals....I am delighted his talent is again on splendid display!”—Michael Moorcock. “I am happy to see this collection of outstanding work.”—Sir Arthur C. Clarke. “Enlightening....Valuable.... Capable of evoking that fabled sense of wonder.”—SFRA Review.
Customer Reviews:
Shamefully underrated.......2003-05-22
The best cover artist of all time. No exaggeration. Some of the later work becomes, unfortunately, exceedingly literal--it's as if someone forced Powers to put Boris-Vallejo-like human figures into his abstract scenes in order to satisfy some PR/marketing goal. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
120 of the artist's fantasy images.......2001-11-11
This highly recommended introduction covering the life of the artist Richard Power opens to a full-page color-embellished survey of 120 of the artist's fantasy images and contributions to the world of paperback illustrative art. An outstanding survey of images is created in an excellent keepsake edition for fans of science fiction and fantasy art.
Great artist, great book, great price!.......2001-06-21
Finally, a book dedicated solely to the works of the late Richard Powers... a dream come true. I was tired of always seeing him presented as one of many entries in books of sci-fi artists, shoved between others who were obviously not as talented as he. This is a true deal.... page after page of his beautiful/haunting/otherworldly art (yes, all 3 adjectives, and more, exist in each painting!). The reproductions are of a very high quality and clarity, some taking up 2 pages, allowing you to see the textures within the images. The text gives some very good insight on Powers' inspirations and personality, with some very funny stories. My only objections are - 1. There are a number of works produced in a fairly small format (4" x 4" or less) , and I would've gladly paid more if the publisher had enlarged them and expanded the page count. 2. No photos of Powers at work, just two self-portraits. 3. The text tends to ramble a bit, especially the first chapter, and I would have loved to see more art in place of it.
