4 out of 5 stars A NICE WORK AND INTERESTING - FUN TO HAVE AROUND.......2007-05-25

If you are interested in TV, then this is a very interesting work to have around the house. It is the type of book that I like to pick up now and again and just scan through it picking out bits of trivia. As the book says, there are over 6,000 complete listings of winners in prime time, day time, et al. I do have to agree with another reviewer here in that the indexing leaves a bit to be desired, ergo, the four stars rather than the five. This is a nice reference book, and to my knowledge, the only one out there that is this complete.

5 out of 5 stars THE EMMYS deserves an AWARD.......2001-11-12

I really enjoy Tom O'Neil's other two books -- "Movie Awards" and "The Grammys" -- and now that I have "The Emmys," too, I'm THRILLED. All three books are full of really really interesting info, lists, trivia, photos, all that -- but JUICY DISH. WOW. Some of the stories he tells are OUTRAGEOUS! Hilarious! The best part: Every one of O'Neil's books is superbly written. They're a joy to read and full of laughs. I cannot recommend these books stronger to you guys. I'm addicted to them. Get all three -- you'll thank me. (...) Get these books and follow along

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but lacking quite a bit.......2001-08-21

You can see a list of most every nominee and winner of any TV award ever bestowed, including sports, news, and daytime Emmys. That much is certain. But what you can't find is anything close to a complete index. Apparently, only the "big" winners and nominees are listed in the index. Even if a performer was nominated for a writing award, you'll find only his or her performance nominations indexed.

It's a good bathroom or coffee table book, but if you hope to use this book for research, you'll end up creating your own crossreferences, so what's the use? The only reason to purchase this one is because there isn't an alternative.

    5 out of 5 stars This Book's a Winner!.......2000-07-13

It's full of lots of nifty trivia (Mary Tyler Moore and Ed Asner are tied for the most Emmys--7 each), curious facts (poor Jackie Gleason never won an Emmy! Angela Lansbury's the biggest loser among current stars now that Susan Lucci finally got one), thorough listings and gazillion photos. Nice surprise about this book: it's sassily written. The text chapters are full of dish, fascinating history and bitchy humor. O'Neil REALLY tells you what goes on BEHIND the scenes. O'Neil's that guy on TV on the red carpet at all those award shows: Emmys, Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys. Turns out that he's a smart writer in addition to being a pretty good awards guru. (I remember that he predicted Lucci would finally win just before she did.) Loved his book on the Grammys. This one's even better -- or maybe I just think so because I like TV more than music?

5 out of 5 stars It's the best of 50 years of TV!.......1998-10-25

Great! All the winners are here plus nominees in top categories and year-by-year essays that give you all the Hollywood dirt and are fun to read. Best part: the HUGE trivia section in the back of the book is broken down into easy bits that make you an Emmy expert fast.

      Book Description

Paradox and Passion in Psychotherapy an existential approach to therapy and counselling Emmy van Deurzen Schiller International University, London, UK This book confronts the taboo of the psychotherapist's personal history and emotions being involved in the therapeutic process. Emmy van Deurzen shows that therapists can draw on the full richness of their own experience in order to be truly credible and inspiring mentors to their clients. Paradox and dilemmas in human life-such as loneliness versus social integration, safety versus adventure, and confidence versus humility-are discussed clearly and directly, and related to a broad spectrum of questions that psychotherapists and their clients would do well to ask themselves. Throughout the book the author reveals her personal struggles with the same predicaments that her clients seek to understand and resolve. This process of disclosure, and the weaving of vivid client cases and issues together with more general philosophical issues, make this a practical and inspiring book that demonstrates the reality and passion of psychotherapy. "Passion and Paradox will become a classic celebration of the sheer power of existential thinking, living, being, and doing. Existentialism comes to bristling life as you walk with Professor van Deurzen through the world of psychotherapy, the world of psychotherapy professionalism, and the deeply personal world of the person who is a psychotherapist." Alvin R. Mahrer, PhD, author of The Complete Guide to Experiential Psychotherapy "Of the vast number of books written on psychotherapy this is one of the very few that are really worth reading. Emmy van Deurzen has the essential attributes of the truly gifted psychotherapist: experience, intelligence, cultural breadth and-above all-the courage to strive after truth. There is much to be learned about psychotherapy and psychotherapists from what she has to say." David Smail, Nottingham, UK

excellent, well written, packed full of info. Bought a few Newf-related books, and this is one of my favorites so far. I'd recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful educational book............2006-03-04

This book is not only a history but an encyclopedia of knowledge. Not only is this book for the prospective newf buyer but also for the owner/breeder who wants as much knowledge as they can learn about their breed. Great, great resource!!

      4 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2006-02-24

This has to be one of the best breed-specific books ever written.

      5 out of 5 stars Newefie Lover.......2004-07-15

I purchased this book recently since I was getting a newfie pup for the first time. I have a golden too but I wanted specific information about the breed. I found it to be very informative, easy to read and understand. It has photos (which I like) that are of nice quality. It is a must for those who want to know more about this breed or want to have a good reference on hand.

      5 out of 5 stars couldn't be better.......2004-01-26

I have read, almost cover-to-cover Emmy Brunos book and it is, by far the most comprehensive book about ANY breed I have ever had the pleasure to read. She has lived with and bred these wonderful animals most of her life and shares most of her knowledge with us, the reader. I could care less about the pictures being black and white, get a good calendar if thats what you want, its the information that is so critical that she gives, and her love of the breed which oozes from every page. Her knowledge is vast and she holds nothing back. I have gone back to that book time and time again for many many answers that I have had. I recommend this book highly and a good calendar for pics if neccessary.

        Book Description

`For a book with such a reflective and philosophical element, this is a surprisingly readable and grounded read. This is perhaps the strongest aspect of van Deurzen’s approach - an ability to understand social development and its often profoundly disturbing effects on the psychology of the individual and to remind us of what is really important in living' - Counsellingbooks.com

`There is a lot to be said for the existential approach in counselling and therapy, and the honesty, intelligence and experience that Emmy van Deurzen brings to her account say it very persuasively. This, thankfully, is not a book setting out a system or founding a school of therapy, but one the reader can engage with constructively to elaborate his or her own position on some very fundamental issues' - David Smail

`Existential Counselling in Practice was without doubt one of the classic texts in this field, and of considerable significance for the wider landscape of therapy too. Existential Counselling & Psychotherapy in Practice is bound to ensure that van Deurzen's practical wisdom continues to influence the future development of existential psychotherapy and counselling for many more years to come' - Simon du Plock, Journal of the Society for Existential Analysis

'Van Deurzen's introduction to existential counselling is outstanding and almost entirely devoid of the linguistic contortions which characterize some of the philosophical literature underpinning the field. For those with an interest in the practical side of existential approaches to counselling and psychotherapy - emphasising the challenges of living in the world rather than focusing on personal psychopathology - I can recommend none better' - CounsellingResource.com

Existential Counselling & Psychotherapy in Practice is the Second Edition of the bestselling text, which offers a concrete framework and practical methods for working from an existential perspective. Central to the book is the belief that many of our problems and concerns arise out of the essential paradoxes of human existence, rather than from personal pathology. From this perspective, the purpose of counselling and psychotherapy is not viewed as problem-solving or skill-building, but as a means of enabling people to come to terms with living life as it is, with all its inherent contradictions.

Emmy van Deurzen, a leading existential philosopher and therapist, presents a practical method of working, using systematic observation, clarification and reflection to help clients rediscover their inner strengths. She shows how personal assumptions, values and talents, once acknowledged, can be turned to constructive use. Using wide-ranging case examples the author also demonstrates the effectiveness of the existential approach in many different situations - from crisis work to dealing with chronic unhappiness.

The existential approach is a well-respected form of psychotherapy, but most writing on the subject tends to be heavily theoretical. This book offers a practical and accessible alternative, which will be invaluable to those in training as well as to more experienced practitioners.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-26

This is a great book to add to my collection of books to be used in my zoo unit. I teach first grade and I'm always on the lookout for books to add to my classroom library. This one is really a good one to use for teaching fiction/nonfiction since it has a fictional story along with some facts about kangaroos. Thanks!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A return of an old friend.......2006-02-09

This was a surprise when my daughter picked it out. I had forgotten this wonderful story from my childhood.

It's a great story about the troubles of Katy as she can't carry around her kid since she has no pocket. She goes on a quest seeking the advice of other animals and eventually goes to the city to find a pocket.

Surprisingly, my daughter got concerned about the end and what will happen to other animals as Katy put them into her new pockets. The pictures of the kangeroo crying might bother some rather sensitvie children but overall it's a wonderful story that will be requested to be read several times.

        2 out of 5 stars Boring........2005-09-16

I bought this book because it was highly rated by Amazon viewers. I was looking for a children's book about something related to Australia since we are moving there. The mother kanagroo doesn't have a pocket so she asks other animals how they carry their babies. What my children thought was weird was that she asked lions and monkeys, (as opposed to other Australian animals like koalas, etc...) "Kanagroos don't live in Africa, Mom!" (We used to live in Africa.)

My children and I think that the story is boring.

5 out of 5 stars Strange things happen if you read too much into it.......2005-05-14

A children's picture book about a mother kangaroo, predictably named Katy, and her joey, unpredictably named Freddy. Katy is sad because since she hasn't got a pocket like the other mother kangaroos, that when she hops, Freddy can't keep up with her. They realise that other species haven't got pockets, so they explore alternative infant-carrying methods, such as carrying the child on the back, or in the arms. None of these methods are successful. However, the wise old owl tells Katy she can buy a pocket in the city. They go to the city and meet a carpenter, who gives them an apron covered in dozens of pockets. Then Katy has more pockets than any other mother kangaroo in the world, and she carries not only her son, but also any other animals who would like a ride.

It's a charming little story. I was given the book when I was four, but I started to wonder about it when I was older. A female kangaroo's pouch is involved in the birth process, and it's where her teats would be. Joeys are born so small and vulnerable that they wouldn't survive a day after birth. So how could Freddy have been born? Freddy must be adopted.

Katy is an excellent, caring mother, despite how she lacks the physical traits associated with being a mother. Why doesn't Katy have a pouch, anyway, when all female kangaroos have them, especially mother kangaroos? Where is her husband, who is never even mentioned in the story, despite how it's all about the family unit? It eventually struck me that Katy doesn't have a pouch, not due to some rare disability, but because she's not physically female at all. She's transgender. That's part of why there's such a sense of wonderstruck triumph when she finally does get her pockets.

Although this interpretation fits remarkably well, it's highly likely that I'm reading way too much into this children's story. After all, it was published in the 40's, which isn't the time period you'd associate with any sort of gender-identity diversity, certainly not in children's stories about talking kangaroos, and certainly not presented with such whole-heartedly loving acceptance. Since it has old-world lions, tailed monkeys, and kangaroos all living in the same jungle, this book was probably not too concerned with things like how a kangaroo's pouch is involved in the birth process, and it wouldn't expect any children reading it to think of that, either. The story of "Katy No-Pocket" is probably not supposed to be a subtle, wonderful, fable about transgendered parenthood... but it sure makes a mighty fine one!

5 out of 5 stars The absolute best!.......2003-11-04

If I could afford it, I would give this book to all my friends with kids. This book is darling - the absolute best. We love it. The illustrations are gorgeous. The story has true depth and is so sweet and meaningful. A real classic. A gem!

From 1926 until her death in 1954, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo created striking, often shocking, images that reflected her turbulent life. One of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent, in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacn, Kahlo did not originally plan to become an artist. During her convalescence from a bus accident in her late teens, Kahlo began to paint with oils. Her pictures, mostly self-portraits and still-lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved. At 21, Kahlo fell in love with the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera; their stormy, passionate relationship survived infidelities, the pressures of Rivera's career, a divorce and remarriage, and Kahlo's poor health. The couple traveled to the United States and France, where Kahlo met luminaries from the worlds of art and politics. She had her first solo exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1938 and enjoyed considerable success during the 40s, but her reputation soared posthumously, beginning in the 80s with the publication of numerous books about her work by feminist art historians and others. In the last two decades an explosion of Kahlo-inspired films, plays, calendars, and jewelry has transformed the artist into a veritable cult figure. Portraits of an Icon is not another book featuring Kahlo's beloved, tortured self-portraits. Rather, it offers another kind of portrait of the artist, a means of seeing her through the eyes of those who surrounded her: modern masters of the camera such as Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Martin Munkacsi; leading photojournalists such as Giselle Freund, Bernard Silberstein, and Fritz Henle; and Kahlo's relatives, lovers, and friends, among them Guillermo Kahlo, Nicolas Muray, and Lola Alvarez Bravo. The images span Kahlo's life, beginning with a photograph of a self-possessed chubby four-year-old, her fists full of wilting roses, and ending with the image of an emaciated, wasted figure laying on her deathbed, dressed in pre-Columbian finery. They follow the artist's trajectory from precocious child to famous artist, bringing into focus the painter, the paintings, the patient, the wife, the daughter, the lover, the friend. They permit a look into her bedroom, a seat at her table, a visit to her hospital room, a stroll through her garden, a view into her collections, and some play with her pets. While many of these images provide us with a unique opportunity to glimpse the woman behind the facade, others, though less revealing, are equally fascinating in allowing us to view one of the most intriguing of the artist's creations--the construction of a self-image as carefully crafted and conceived as any of her works of art.

5 out of 5 stars Detour for Emmy by Kally Vorbeck.......2006-09-27

First of all Emmy is a freshman in high school. She lives with her brother and her mother. Her brother is a drug attic who is always in rehad, well most the time. Emmy's mother is always out drinking. Shes only normal half the time. Well while Emmy is in school she meets a guy named Art. She finds out that he likes her too so they start dating. Emmy is constantly sneaks Art in and out of her house while her mother is out drinking. Art is a straight A student and has big plans to go to standford college. Also, Emmy had big plans of attending standford for her college education. Emmy and Art start partying with eachother and become closer and closer everyday. One night Emmy has sex with Art and don't really want to, but she does. Art always tells her that if she loved him she would do it. Art always trys pressuring her to have sex, so one night they have sex on a beach. Emmy forgets to use protection. After awhile, Emmy starts to feel sick and is throwing up often. So Emmy goes to the nurse at school. The nurses gives her a checkup and Emmy finds put that she is pregnant. Emmy is scared, confused, and dont know how to tell Art. So during choir, she trys to explain to him the problem. Art doesnt beileve her until she srarts crying and passes out. Emmy and Arts relationship starts falling apart from there. When Emmy told her mother, she was furiated. She was sure her mother wasnt going to help her, and what she thought was right. Emmy was alone and by herslef for the nine months of her pregnancy. Her mother wouldn't help her and would barely talk to her. When Emmy has the baby her and Art get back together. Emmy and Art took the baby over to Arts house. At first when Emmy and Art told his parents, they didnt beileve them. His father and mother thought that it was just a child Emmy was babysitting for. The baby has the same birthmark as Art and its in the same place. Now they know that its Arts baby for sure. A little later in time, Art and Emmy breakup and Art goes off to Standford like he planned. Before he leaves he visits Emmy and the baby (Rosie). Now Emmy is living at home with her mother, cant go off to standford and live the life she wanted.

be tide down to a child. Once young Emmy starts to show her pregnant belly the school makes her go to a school that deals with things like pregnant teens. What's unfair about this is she has to leave while art gets to run around care free Emmy has to quit chorus which she loves to do. She even has to give up the one thing she loves the most which is soccer. But the worst is yet to come. The night that Emmy does get to go out after she has her baby Rose her date turns out to be a total jerk. He tries to rape Emmy, but what hurts the most is that he labels her a [...]. I feel this way because he tells her before he force him self on he "it's not like you a virgin". To me this mean that if a girl has sex with one guy that it gives a sign to other guys that she'll have sex with any one. To me this book is stereotyping all teen mothers. But what about the fathers? I would recommend that all young girls who are being pressured into having sex to read this book. This book is the ultimate birth control.

5 out of 5 stars My Review .......2006-05-25

Now in this situation, if you read this story, you would be very shocked. ok it starts out wit emmy, she is a freshman at high school, who lives with her mom, who is drunk half the time, and her brother, who is a drug attic, and is in rehab most of the time. ok and dont you think she has many problems of her own. then she meets Art Rodriguez. who is a straight A student( as well as Emmy) and he has major plans in going to Standford College when he graduates. ok so he meets emmy and like he starts to like her, and emmy feels the same for art. then she has sex one time in her brothers bedroom, and she didnt no how to put the condom on the right way? lol. and when she had sex, she started bleeding, then she did it again at the beach but this time, she didnt use any protection, thinking you know, she believe art n what he says that " he pulled out in time" that right there is such a lie? but anyway.... emmy finds out she's pregant then art doesnt belive her until she passes out at choir class. and then the nurse tells her she might be pregnant. so right there emmy and art's relationship go down hill from there. then Mr. Rodriguez(art's dad) sees art's baby for the first time, and thinks that emmy is babysitting for someone else, then she tells him that its his grndchild, art's baby, her baby. then afterward art's family are happy and upset, just because emmy had a baby that was art's, art's mom doesnt believe that Rosie is art's baby, her birthmark looks exatly like art's and its in the same place, she thinks she got her baby tattooed? now that right there is ridiculous, who in the world would get there baby's birth mark tattoed? but then Emmy and Art break-up,and he gets ready for Standford, but before he goes, he stops by Emmy's every night before he leaves for college. and visits them two. and then they finally break up and then Emmy finally finds someone else.. in the end. so hopefully that they will bring out another story in that one.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book of all time........2005-09-10

I read this book when I was in 8th grade which was a year ago. I first found it online and wanted it so badly and when I finally got it, I was rushing to finishing my work so I could read it some more but, when I finished it, I was sad because that meant that I couldn't read about Emmy anymore. This is a story about a strait-A student who, in her freshmen year of high school, falls in love with Art, also a strait-A student headed for Stanford but when she finds out she's pregnant because of unprotected sex on the beach, Art says it's not his because of the pull-out method which apparently doesn't work(no,duh!). So Emmy, gives up everything for her child while Art goes to Stanford and doesn't even tell his parents about his child. Before, you go and think it's just another teen-pregnacy book, know this: it's not! This book shows sacrafice, love, and how you can discover how strong you can be. A must-read. If I could chose a book to read for my english class, again, I'd choose this even though a teacher proably wouldn't approve it for a class read, but it's perfect for an independent read. This book also shows girls that the only way to not get pregnant, is to not have sex.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Teens.......2004-01-06

This book was on my teenage daughter's recommended reading list at school. My daughter is not an avid reader but after giving this book accolades, I decided to read it myself. I found this book very well written and the message was conveyed clearly and realistically. After reading this book, I had a discussion with my daughter and was amazed and delighted to see that the book had reinforced all the things I have been teaching her about the consequences of teenage sex that had seemed to be going in one ear and out the other for years. Peer pressure in high school is overwhelming enough as it is, and this book accomplished in a much better way, what I, as a mother, have been trying to accomplish on my own. Written from a teenage viewpoint, this book helped my daughter relate in a much better way than I or any other than any parent could strive for. The only thing my daughter complained about after reading this was that she felt the author should have stressed more on the difficulty in caring for a baby on a day to day basis, especially for a teenager (i.e. the everyday trials and tribulations you go through from the incessant crying, walking the floors all night, teething crankiness, chasing after them, dealing with illness and the extensive patience (and maturity) one needs in order to cope with a baby every single day). This book should be on every required reading list in schools across the United States. It should be viewed as an excellent aid in teaching teens across America the importance of safe sex and abstinence. Kudo's to the author on this accomplishment.

Twelve-year-old May Amelia is too busy chasing sheep, fishing for salmon, and keeping pace with the antics of her seven Finnish brothers to bother wearing a dress or scrubbing behind her ears. Unfortunately, she's being pressured to clean up her act. "It seems like everyone is conspiring to make me a Proper Young Lady," she observes in frustration. "I do not think being a proper Young Lady sounds like any fun at all."

The old-fashioned language in this historical novel seems strained at times, and the quirky use of capital letters is an unnecessary distraction, but this book is still a lot of fun. Why? For one thing, the story is set in the far, untamed reaches of the West at the turn of the 20th century, and offers encounters with Chinook Indians, dark forests, and the twists and turns of the Nasel River. And then there is May Amelia--as headstrong as rushing water, and the only female born on this stretch of the river since her family can remember. She is known (when she's not deep into trouble) as the Miracle. Will this feisty female ever settle down and become the little lady everyone expects her to be? Will her pregnant mother give birth to another girl so May Amelia can finally have a sister? You'll have to read the whole story to find out. (Ages 10 and older) --Maria Dolan

It isn't easy being a pioneer in the state of Washington in 1899 --particularly when you are the only girl ever born to the new settlement.  With seven older brothers and a love of adventure, May Amelia Jackson just can't seem to abide her family's insistence that she behave like a Proper Young Lady.  Not when there's fishing to be done, sheep to be hearded, and real live murderers to be captured!  All May needs is at least one other girl living along the banks of the Nasel River.  And now that Mama's going to have a baby, maybe there's hope.

1 out of 5 stars this is a boring book.......2007-07-21

Hi well to start This is a very boring book. I can't believe it got a newberry cause it really stinks bad. And well it was fun at first but there wasn't good grammer or punctuation. (I enjoyed that part.) But it was boring (as I've said before.) But May got treated bad by her Dad and brother and a bunch of other stuff happened. I didn't finish it cause I didn't like it. Well gotta go hope this was helpful Brooke.

4 out of 5 stars One of Eight.......2007-01-31

May Amelia was a girl was the only girl in her Washington farm. She had seven brothers and her mother and father with her. May Amelia was their one and only. She was no proper young lady. She wanted to be just like any of her other brothers. Fishing on the Nasel and getting messy with her brothers was what she treasured most. She had a very harsh life, and Jennifer Holm had a very superior way of expressing the calamity and pain of her life. May had her hardships and the twilights of her life. Being the lone girl on the Nasel was tough for May; since she would do anything, and everything to be like one her own brothers. She had done so many outrageous and extreme things just to do the things a boy was allowed to do. May had an Uncle in Astoria, which was a city down along the end of the Nasel. When he would come to visit his Finnish family on the shore of the Nasel it was then a very extraordinary occasion. He was a sailor, just like one of May Amelia's brothers wanted to be. When he left, which wasn't exceptionally time-consuming after he had just arrived. While May does a great deal to be like one of her brothers, nothing seems to be actually effective. May was a wonderful girl, who everyone knew, even though there were not that many people that lived along the Nasel River. There especially were no other girls.

After May has so many things to have the privileges and the honors of being a boy, some one comes into her home and life that no one wanted within a million years; Grandmother Patience. Grandmother Patience was the meanest person that May's family had ever met. She had treated May with no respect, and had abused her as if she had no feelings and could feel no pain at all. Jennifer L. Holm had described May and her life with her father's mother with such a deep passion; with all the things that had happened to her from the things that Grandmother Patience had done to her. May was tortured inside and out, with her having no control. Since she was just a girl, she had to be a proper young lady. She couldn't say anything that would disrespect her elder, no matter how much she wanted to. It was tearing her up inside. This book was such a spectacular thriller/drama that it kept me reading and always interested. Every time you have to stop reading, it is like having to read an ongoing cliffhanger. It would always keep you interested, and having very depressing feelings for May Amelia. It makes you wonder if you could handle what she was going through, and how much more of it you wanted to read it to see what her decision to do is next. I would recommend "Our Only May Amelia" to everyone to see how suspenseful someone's life could be.

          4 out of 5 stars A Parent's Perspective.......2006-12-05

My family and I listened to this book on tape as we traveled last week. As adults, my husband and I found the story fascinating and touching. As parents, we were shocked. Why is there swearing in a book that's labeled "for ages 9 and up"? Also, why is there a gruesome and graphic description of a murdered woman's remains and what happened to them? If that scene had appeared, as written, in a movie, it surely would have been rated PG-13 or R. We really did enjoy the book very much, we were just horrified that it is considered "children's literature." When I was a child, May Amelia would have been in the young adult dept at the library, not the children's. Just my two cents.

4 out of 5 stars An Awesome Story With A Different View.......2006-11-22

I would have never even known this book even existed unless my reading teacher had handed them out to the class. This book is about a fun-loving girl that unlike everybody else, doesn't want to be a "proper young lady." May goes through troubles that are unimaginable and through it all has to learn that everyone's life has to end and that for some of us, our lives end sooner. All May wants is a loving little sister to play because she is stuck with six older brothers and an onery cousin. May has a strict father that yells at her even on her birthday. May meets new people on her journey and has to say good-bye to others. Overall, this book was a very well-written fun story.

4 out of 5 stars Our only May Amelia, a pretty amazing book........2006-09-27

This award winning book, Our only May Amelia ,is pretty much like its title. May is the one and only May Amelia. Born in Nasel,Washington taking place in the year of 1899,she comes upon a family of seven brothers, and she is the only girl in her family. Imagine that. There is a baby on the way, and she only dreams of it being a girl, but unfortunatley, thats not too likely to happen. On with the story, May thinks her dad favors her brothers, and does not want her. I quote something he said in the book about the new baby coming, "I sure to hope we have another boy, because I don't think I can put up with another May Amelia." He said that on her own birthday, twelve years of age. How horrible he treated her that day. Anyways these are all of her brothers: Matti is eighteen, Kaarlo is seventeen, Wendell is fifteen, Alvin is fourteen, Along with Ivan, and Wilbert is thirteen. May goes through alot of action, thrilling, scary, and wonderful experiences and adventures in this book. Two deaths had happened, sadly. She was visiting her Aunt, but sadly, shes one of the people who had died. They still visited their uncle, fortunatley. May's grandmother is absalutley terrible, not ONE thing did May do to her and she says shes no good for this family, and she wacks her so hard with her cane, May has an enormous bruise on her. Poor, Poor May. Later on in the story she dies, even though she was a terrible women, she is still May's grandmother. Also, Wendell was very ill, and he was just about as close (as two cars about crash into eachother) to dying. Luckily he did not. Piles of bad come crashing down, when you have deaths, close TO dying, being the only girl, and being called "worthless". May has went through BUNCHES of that, but still held through. And in the end, she relized she was the only girl, she was happily, a MIRACLE.
