5 out of 5 stars Excellent guided meditations..........2002-03-29

Anna Wise has basically taken her guided meditations from her books and saved you the trouble of making your own tapes, a boon to those of us who don't own tape players in this cd age. I think the guided meditations make a great change from Zen type awareness meditation and Qigong guided meditations.

There are a wide variety of meditations available on the cd's that cover the gamut of brainwaves and "destinations". Her voice is well suited to the task (after all, she does for her job) and I thought the music and vocals are mixed appropriately. That is, you don't need to worry about her voice booming over top of the music nor do you need to worry you'll just be listening to music to catch the instructions.

I didn't note any sound quality issues, perhaps the other reviewer has a bad sound system or, more likely, has it turned up way too high.

I listened to the 4 CD's in Anna Wise's High Performance Mind collection. Bravo Kit Walker...the music is absolutely wonderful!
The talking on the other hand is not. It sounds like two audio streams were CARELESSLY mixed together. 1-2 seconds prior to when Anna speaks, there is an annoying hum from her microphone that is readily audible over the wonderful background music. There are a few times when you can hear the microphone get bumped and noise in the background when Anna speaks. I know some may say that there is supposed to be a humming (frequency) sound in the background...yes I hear that and know why that is there. This sounds like the sound you'd hear on the high school PA system "before the principal addresses the masses". IMHO takes away from the spirit of the exercise.
Technically, the engineer (?) who created these recordings needs to filter out the hum of Anna's microphone also use a sponge- type cover on the mic so if it's bumped, you don't hear it!

Sorry Anna, I give it 2 stars only because of the lovely music playing in the background.

Forget everything else your looking at right now and buy this! This program includes four CDs drawing on the four essential categories of brain waves and their diverse contributions to wellness and wholeness of mind. The final product is based upon modern research, considering the various strengths of ancient techniques. Relax and do the entire program! Time requirements are very reasonable.

Something good is clearly going on here. I listen to these tapes while walking; and the effect on my well being is stunning. The authors method is simple: brain waves profoundly affect outlook and brainwaves respond easily to simple meditation technicques.

Book Description

Each moment of our lives, from birth to death, our brains are engaged in an endless symphony of patterns. In Awakening the Mind, Anna Wise reveals how a careful understanding of the four types of brain waves, and the practice of carefully designed meditation exercises that lead to a mastery of each type, can vastly improve everyday focus, memory, concentration, and overall mental awareness.

Over the past three decades, Wise has measured the brain-wave patterns of spiritual teachers, artists, high-performing businessmen, athletes, and other highly creative and productive individuals. She discovered that, during periods of peak mental awareness and clarity, they all exhibited a specific brain-wave pattern in which the four categories of brain waves-alpha, beta, theta, and delta-combined in a distinct configuration. In this book, Wise provides meditation exercises specially developed to lead readers to achieve that heightened mental state referred to as the Awakened Mind.

If the phrase "aligning your chakra" sets your teeth on edge, don't buy this book. There is science behind what she is saying, but it's hard to dig out from underneath all the metaphysical garbage.

2 out of 5 stars insight for meditation . . . not brainwaves.......2002-06-04

In the "enlighted" state I've achieved after reading Wise's Awakening the Mind, brainwaves are still good for one and only one reason: I can monitor them using an external device to more quickly and accurately recognize nuances of my own cognition.

Though the waves emanating from regions of my brain might have some influence over other regions within my brain or even more distant phenomena (e.g. people) - that is, though they might carry some intrinsic quality of power as the subtitle suggests - Wise fails to make a clear point of it. She does, however, convince me that she has studied the recorded brainwaves of many people widely recognized as "spiritually enlightened" and that she has uncovered a pattern or "signature" for the cognitive state most people call "enlightenment". From those observations, and many years teaching techniques in meditation, she has refined her meditative "induction scripts" (to borrow from the lexicon of hypnotherapy) to quickly achieve the various modes of cognition associated with each pattern.

Before you get too excited, let me explain that the patterns, as she describes them, aren't sophisticated. Our brains generate four quite distinct brain waves (in varying combination) corresponding to four modes or qualities of consciousness that we experience in four distinct spatial regions of the brain. Beta, alpha, theta, and delta map to linguistic, sensory, and the emotive subconscious, which map to the cortex, etc. Anna doesn't get much beyond this simplicity except to say that brainwave recordings of enlightened people tend to show equal participation of each wave and thus each mode of thought in the mind.

To make the point, Anna beats quite a few horses to death after torturing them with her writing and straining to turn brainwaves into something more than they are. For example, when describing theta waves, Anna writes:

Theta is where we hold our "stuff." If you have any "stuff" (and who doesn't), you know what I'm talking about-the unclear emotional material that each of us collects over the course of our lifetime, sometimes called "baggage" or "garbage." -- pg. 11

From this and passages like it, Anna leads us to believe that she considers brainwaves actual "regions" of the brain . . . "repositories." It gets worse. And this passage isn't the only one in which she reveals a bias toward psychtherapeutic techniques for personal change and healing. If only she could stick to brainwaves.

In fairness, she has probably worked with the concepts so long that, for her, they have become a bit blurry. But this quality of thought - fuzzy mental categories and hyperbole - smacks of a smart person that failed to get over the novelty of an experience . . . or just bad marketing.

I've yet to spend time with her exercises. And maybe only then will I understand. So I will keep this text around, if only on the faith that what Anna's learned about brainwaves make the meditation all the better. Better yet, I'll get an EEG machine for myself.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Exploring States of Consciousness.......2002-04-09

Anna Wise's book is a treasure. I have been a student of meditation and transpersonal psychology for over 30 years. I have experienced many workshops, teachers, meditation retreats, and also have read innumerable books on spiritual subjects. "Awakening the Mind" is one of the best guide books I have ever found for gaining mastery over states of consciousness.

It suggests many effective techniques for taming the "monkey mind" and deepening meditation. It shows ways to access healing energy, personal insight, and greater creativity. It is filled with meditations that help one lead a richer every day life.

At the same time, it is much more than a "how to" book. "Awakening the Mind" also provides many guided meditations that are poetic and revelatory. When practiced with care, they can lead to profoundly meaningful and transcendent experiences.

For several years I have had the privilege of studying with Anna Wise in person, participating in her workshops, working with her individually, and training to do her work using biofeedback to help gain mastery of states of consciousness. I have also used Anna Wise's excellent set of CD's, entitled "High Performance Mind", along with her previous book of the same title. I cannot begin to express how much my life has been enriched by this work and by knowing her.

I highly recommend "Awakening the Mind" and the CD set to anyone interested in exploring the further reaches of consciousness and in awakening to their full potential.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Class Act!.......2002-04-07

I cannot praise this book enough! I am 55 years young and have been serious about the pursuit of inner exploration and the search of something (I already have) but lost in the quagmire of living...my true essence. For the past 20 years,I have doggedly read all manner of books, listened to countless audio-neuro tapes, engaged in seminars, lectures, and other spiritual and "so-called" consciousness endeavors, and even "brain machines"! After awhile, I realized I was spinning my wheels, something vital was missing.

Undaunted and still in search, I later happened upon an excellent book, The High Performance Mind by Anna Wise 1995. That book changed my life! Then I purchased her very professional companion guided meditations CD package based on the same book. My point is that Anna Wise's superb research deals with the one essential factor that, from my point of view, most, if not all other researchers in the consciousness field of science do not address, and that is that our consciousness, in any form, is not based on any ONE dominant brainwave frequency. Our states of mind and their contents consists of a SYMPHONY of finely woven and intricate interrelationships of brainwave frequencies and to reach the really deep meditational states, you have to be able to open the CHANNELS from the subconscious to the conscious in order to gain any meaningful experience! Anna showed me how!

My meditations have over the last 6 years have not only become real to me, but thanks to Anna's realistic approach to this fascinating field emplementing the Mind Mirror EEG which registers the WHOLE brain for real-time biofeedback which she fundamentally bases her work on, has given me the capability to empower myself in taking control of my brainwaves (and consequently my mind states) from my mundane affairs to my spiritual quests. Anna writes with warmth and unparallel clearness and logic, her meditations and excercises really gave me a handle on my personal meditations and ways of thinking.

As if that wasn't enough, she comes up with another masterpiece with a capital "M"!! Awakening the Mind has been a long awaited treasure for me because I know Anna has been working all over the world gathering more knowledge and experience dealing with some of the best minds in all walks of life. Not only does she review the core theme of her research which stabilizes the integrity of it and makes it accessible to anyone new to this work, but she embellishes it with exciting new knowledge based on her latest findings, including, new meditations and very useful tips!!! In keeping with her emaculate style, she is consistent with her authoratative, precise, clear no-nonsense, but warm and spiritual presentation of information that provides the tools for anyone who wants to get "down to business" in his or hers quest for consciousness work be it whatever you want to do in life, healing, self mastery, creativity, problem solving, the universe is the limit.

We owe alot of gratitude to the dedication of people like Anna Wise in these interesting and exciting new times as our global consciousness undergoes the next levels of evolution. We can walk this earth as sleeping zombies or WAKE UP and really live as WHOLE people. I URGE everybody to read this book because EVERYBODY WILL BENEFIT!!! And you will not lose in getting her other book and audio CDs too. Thanks again Anna!! You're the BEST!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent start..........2002-03-29

Well, Anna Wise has basically taken her previous book "The High Performance Mind", polished all the rough spots, added some more information and, thankfully, come up with a relatively good title. This book uses the previous as its core and adds a number of additional meditations, more examples and references to other disciplines.

She has removed some of the material found in the previous book, notably the graphs about brainwaves which, although they are a bit useful from a theoretical point of view, are mostly useless to those who don't own an EEG. In their place are a lot more guided meditations and many more personal stories. In particular, I think the addition of the anecdotes rather good since they help show that there are many possible paths besides just EEG; this should be obvious since many of the other disciplines (Zen and Taoism/Qigong for instance) have been around for a very long time.

This is a great advancement in the continuing quest to start to reconcile the differences between Western medicine/scientific method and Eastern disciplines. Wise notes that some Qigong masters she monitored during healing exhibited Delta brainwaves in excess of 50 times a "normal" person; she takes this as further evidence of great movements of energy since this could not likely be produced by the brain alone. Wow, well, this is what the Qigong masters have been saying for thousands of years!

The only weak points of the book concern holistic views. That is, Wise focuses on the brainwaves only when no solution is going to come only from work in one area. That is, meditation based on a diet of softdrinks, chips and other junk is probably not going to help you that much; you need a holistic view and methodology. Of course, this has been preached by many Eastern traditions for quite a while and I think Wise probably should have commented on this aspect.

Anyway, despite a couple of weak points this is an excellent place to start for anyone starting to work on his/her lifestyle. Check out the old classics "Mindfulness in Plain English", "Zen Training" and perhaps "Scholar Warrior" and start on the road to centering yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Brainwave Entrainment.......2007-10-01

I have several of Dr. Thompson's CD programs, and this is one of my favorites. These CDs are great for creativity, inner peace and relaxation. The music is great, relaxing yet entrancing.

4 out of 5 stars These CD's can change your life!.......2004-01-20

Since listening to Dr. Thompson's work, I am no longer stressed and angry in traffic; I'm more effective at work and calmer at home. I listen to Insight & Intuiton at work, Awakened Mind when I wake, Rejuvenation when I'm ill, and Relaxation, well, of course, to relax. I also use his Brainwaves Journey for self-hypnosis. The music was not what I expected at first, and I was even a bit disappointed, but when I felt them working every day, I kept using them and now I find them indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars Drifting into a Dream State.......2003-08-20

Dr. Jeffrey Thompson has been researching the effect of sound since 1981. He has since established a sound research center in San Diego. He believes in the stress reduction benefits of sound and has proven the effects through clinical research in universities, hospitals and private practices over a period of many years.

This music is based on nature sounds and is very relaxing and beautiful. I also noticed that my creativity increased. Probably because I am sleeping so well and am well rested and more alert. I feel that these CDs almost clear the fog in your brain. It is like a vacation for your brain.

What does this music sound like? It is all different. I loved two of the CDs the most. I will review those.

If sounds swirl around you in the dance of spinning mermaids, that is the best description for what happens when I listen to the Alpha Meditation selection. There is a certain musical spinning which surrounds you and then there are notes that swirl about independently as they also rotate around you like planets. It is fascinating and addictive.

There are sounds of waves crawling up beaches mingled with singing bowls, birds, raindrops, flutes, echoes from beyond time and space. I see flowers blooming in gardens filled with orchids and even sea creatures playing out in a huge ocean. It is a mixture of deep rainforest and coastal escapes.

The notes spin from one side of my headphones to the other. It makes me blissfully dizzy. You literally feel you are being pulled down into a whirlpool of sleep. I have been listening to this CD every night to fall asleep fast.

When none of my other CDs help me sleep, this is the one I reach for. At times I am unable to sleep after listening to three other CDs, then I put this one in and
I am completely asleep in minutes.

Yes, when in bed, it can help you fall asleep. When listening while typing, it just becomes a relaxing escape. I seem to be able to leave the Bass Boost on with this CD.

I prefer Disc 4 (Emotional Openness and Intimate Communication) without as much depth and they sound more clear with my DBB turned off. Otherwise it has a roar and you can not hear the more delicate sounds. Turn off your Dynamic Bass Boost and the music becomes much more delicate and relaxing.

This CD sounds like beautiful notes of pure sounds that dance around your mind or water dripping from the inside of a cave into deep pools of sound. Fall asleep floating away on a river that seems to be endless.

    Also Recommended:

Steven Halpern: Ancient Echoes, Music for Sound Healing, Enhancing Intimacy, Self-Esteem and the Sacred Chorde. I also have enjoyed falling asleep to: Keith Jarett: the Melody at Night.

If you are looking for emotional healing, a great CD is called: Giving Love Away by Robert Shahidi. It is amazing, I fall completely asleep just as the last words are playing and always remember myself being half aware and then I?m blissfully asleep. This CD heals my emotions like nothing I have experienced before. I highly recommend it.

Another great way to get into a relaxed state is by doing the "Yoga Zone: Flexibility and Stress Release" DVD or Video. It is amazing. It knocks me out because when I'm done exercising, all I want to do is climb into my soft warm bed.

Entrainment process is explained best by the way that when two pendulum clocks are kept in proximity, they synchronize together and start moving in similar rhythms. These CD's are meant to do the same. Some CD's lock you on whether you want or not and in some CD's you have to lock on yourslef by relaxing and switching of concious brain. Although it is not clear in the manual supporting the CD's whether these Cd's use the Harmonic Matrix technology (where all frequencies are present and only one is dominant like Theta , this is how brain normally works) , still the
CD's are a good start if you are new to Hemsiphere Synchrnozation technology. These CD's can have a profound effect on your personal transfromation and growht and initally after listening if you listen to them quite often , your dusfunctional emotions will surface and then vanish giving you a lot of freedom . Personally I have tried many other CD's of the same sort and there are defiately better Cd's available than these but the cost being exorbent , these are a good start.
Also if you know breathwork or yoga basic execises and can relax yourself before starting listening to these Cd's then , these can have a profound effects. Some Cd's like Track 2 in Delta
seemingly sounds like normal music and you can buy these CD's thinking that you are buying Cd's for relaxation.
Also remember that hemispheric synchronization does wonders when you have a positive intent, of course there are other CD's in the market which are better at the job whether your intent is there.
An Honest overall review will be that incase you have already started medidation in other forms and need no time to get into Alpha state then dont Buy this set . But incase you are newcomer to medidation and dont have time to go the traiditonal way, this is really a good start. So go for it, and then move on to more powerful CD's. In any cae the music is soothing and even if it does not have much effect on you, the music itself is a good collection.

    1 out of 5 stars Delta Sleep.......2003-03-24

I bought the 4 discs in Brainwave Suite. I was most interested in the Delta disc, as I have difficulty letting down and going to sleep. It gave me a really bad time. I gave it a 3 nite trial. The very deepest tones are just too deep. They are bone ratteling deep. Result was my muscles tensed up. I tried with head phones, low volume. I had to slip the head phones up over the tips of my ears - still the deep tones were too heavy. Vibrated thru my skull. I tried just using my speakers- which are about 16' apart with me in the middle. Low volume. And BTW I have the settings on my amplifier with the base as off as it will go. It vibrated my air bed. I had to turn it off. I was tense, my head hurt and I was angry. The little dog yipped to go out, and I felt like stepping on him - flat! I didn't get to sleep till I took 2 Tylenol, 2 Gaba, and 2 Ativan. Then it was not a restful sleep. Those deep tones rumbled in my body and my head for hours and here almost 24 hours later I am still up tight, my head is fogged and I still feel angry.
I hate this record. I have yet to test the others. This form says I have to fill in the spaces, so you will see one star, which is a lie. If there were black stars I'd give it 5 of them.

Brain Wave describes what happens when an astromonical phenomenon passes Earth, and elevates the intelligence of a sizable proportion of the planet's population.

This causes plenty of changes, as super geniuses have to keep busy and keep from getting bored, somehow.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good book from one of the stars of the Campbellian Golden Age of SF.......2007-04-29

The title on the cover of the paperback is, "Brainwave / His Enduring Masterpiece". The title that appears at the top of the Amazon listing is, "Brainwave: The Greatest Masterpiece by the Science Fiction Grandmaster". I have real problems with both versions. I am fairly sure that Anderson would be dismayed to find that "Brain Wave" actually was regarded as his enduring masterpiece, let alone his greatest.

Poul Anderson was distinguished in two ways from his peers among John W. Campbell's hand-picked corps of science fiction luminaries. Of them all, he was the most likely to work out all the permutations and ramifications arising from any initial premise. Among other things, that led to entertaining and informative essays on such things as how to construct an alien world for literary purposes and how not to write heroic fantasies ("On Thud and Blunder".) The other way in which he differed from Asimov, De Camp, Van Vogt and Heinlein was his inclination toward the downbeat. There are precious few heroic triumphs in the collected works of Poul Anderson and even less true joy.

As an author, I don't think he had much of a sense of humor. That may be why the earlier tales of the Hokas, the ones contained in "Earthman's Burden," are so wildly hilarious. Given the premise--which I'd be willing to bet originated with his collaborator, Randall Garrett--Anderson worked out exactly what would happen when space-faring humans smacked into a race of intelligent, infinitely suggestible, role-playing teddy bears. The first stories were wonderful. The later entries in the series were simply variants on the early ones and burdened with an increasing sub-text of Andersonian gloom.

"Brain Wave" is a classic type of Anderson book. In the beginning is the premise: over a period of a few months every thinking mind on earth becomes more intelligent by an unspecified but quite large factor. A rabbit calmly sits down and reasons out how to escape from a trap. A man born with subnormal intelligence begins functioning in the high-normal range. A woman rejects the burden of super-genius. Transcendent humans exploring the universe accidently find themselves deprived of their new-found transcendence and become helpless before their own meant-to-be self-explanatory technologies. And so on, through all the permutations and ramifications.

The point of the book is the working out of the consequences of the initial, quite arbitrary and wholly unexplained premise. Well-developed characterizations and memorable uses of language are irrelevant to such a point and in such a book; you will find neither here. What you will find is Poul Anderson manipulating his human puppets by use of competent, if not especially memorable prose along a series of very, very cleverly thought-out paths to a satisfactory and self-consistent ending.

Worse books than this have been cited as mid-Twentieth Century science fiction classics. It's well worth reading, but "Brain Wave" is neither Poul Anderson's "enduring" nor his "greatest" masterpiece.

    Four suddenly much brighter stars.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Poul! .......2007-02-14

On a whim I was digging through a libraries box of books for sale and found "Brainwave" in a late 50's hardback collection of science fiction novels.
I just finished reading it and I still have a smile on my face. Truly vintage Anderson. No, he's no eloquent wordsmith but that's not why you read him - it's his ideas you read him for, fascinating! What an amazing mind he had...and this was a chance to walk with him through it once again for me. It reminded me of reading Clarke's "Childhood's End" the first time, I put it down and thought for a while and looked at things differently for days. There's the love- ideas, concepts and realities that make you THINK.
The plot is given by others, so I won't go into it but a look at the potential of man going beyond his bounds that I'd not imagined. This is more of the serious vein of "Boat of a 1,000 Years" than his more fun writings like Time Patrol. Friends and I have noted that his books have a tendency to climax, then you look and there's still a third of the book to read :) Well, this one only does it a chapter or two ahead. That's my only criticism, a well recommended read for those who enjoy reading beyond a star trek quickvella.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful piece of classic science fiction.......2007-01-03

A book based on an intriguing idea: we have been moving through a region of space where a field damped neural speed. When we move out of that field, human IQ sky-rockets. Animals also become much smarter. Horses refuse to work, pigs plot clever escapes, chimps learn simple speech.

Written in 1954, it long predates Vernor Vinge's ideas of the different regions of space: the Slow Zone, the Beyond, the Transcend. It is slightly later than Arthur C Clarke's Childhood's End, which has some of the same themes, although I think Poul Anderson pulls off the transition much more convincingly.

In general the transition from normality to beyond-genius is intriguing, but it is hard for Anderson to convince us of the consequences. For example, I tend to doubt that many people would immediately refuse to perform mundane jobs, thus crashing the economy.

The beginning pages of the book are definitely the best, where the world wakes up to find itself curiously smarter as the transformation process begins.

    5 out of 5 stars age old Utopia/distopia question!.......2006-04-16

this is a great book. I actually learned about through reading stephen king's the Tommyknockers, which actually pretty much robbed the storyline from brain wave, and had one of its characters make a reference to this sci fi classic! I found it in a used book store by accident. It was FATE! I loved this book, great story. It really belongs in a category of utopian novels, as well as science fiction. If you like this, you might also like Brave new world, 1984, etc. also if you can stand his writing check out stephen king's the Tommyknockers which actually is fascinating in its own way, but not as original as I had thought after reading brain wave.

5 out of 5 stars Highs and lows.......2007-08-02

This set of CDs has really high points, and few low spots. The music is wonderful. The brainwave entrainment is powerful. The added guided meditations are a great idea...

But Owen Morrison misses the proverbial boat too often. In "Journey of the Heart" in particular, the guided meditation moves so fast I have found it difficult to keep up with him. At times, it's hard to understand what he is saying, as his voice often drones and he uses "big" words that seem to inhibit my ability to follow him. When I'm in that relaxed meditative state, my brain just doesn't want to keep flowing when it runs into a word like "effervescent"... especially when the tone of the speaker's voice sounds more like he is talking about a muddy bog than a beautiful mist.

The other journeys are better paced. Much slower, and the instructions are often repeated enough that my mind has time to absorb them, process them, and roll on before being given the next set of instructions. ("Journey of the Spirit" is my favorite, because it uses the Awakened Mind pattern of brainwaves.) Still, I find it difficult to follow him all of the time. I've learned to just sit back and observe. It seems that my mind is capable of following the spoken guidance much better if I just let go and stop hanging on his every word. I find it's easier to meditate when I can move at my own pace, and in my own direction. Although, it may be easier for others to have more specific guidance, I don't know.

What I'm saying is: my "gripes" about these CDs could very well be my own fault.

Overall, the music is splendid, and the results are phenomenal. I always feel much better after listening, just as I do with all of Dr. Thompson's CDs. I haven't tried any of his music that I don't like! I don't regret buying this set, and I still use it on a regular basis.

My advice to anyone would be this: If you only plan to buy one CD set of Dr. Thompson's, this is probably not the best one. And, if you have never listened to his music before, this is probably not the best to start out with. Still, I doubt you will regret the money and time you've invested in it, either way.

    5 out of 5 stars BUY IT!.......2002-03-18

It is a journey that will be very difficult to forget.Even if you never tried meditation before listen to this. All you have to do is close your eyes and relax very soon you are going to find yourself in a world of sounds combined with colorfull pictures.
I believe it is worthy to eperience it.

5 out of 5 stars Truly an incredible journey - or four!.......1998-12-18

A friend of mine had this 4-CD set and we used them together. I really do not know the words to accurately describe the experience - and I have a considerable vocabulary! Any one of these CDs alone leads the listener into fantastic levels of awareness; taken all together, they co-integrate and create amazing results in all four facets of the consciousness: Mind, Body, Heart, and Spirit. In retrospect I think that Brainwave Journey was instrumental in a unique and fulfilling creative project I was undertaking with the aforementioned friend, though I was not fully aware of so much influence at the time. In short, it would appear that Brainwave Journey contributed immensely to the inspiration and personal well-being that made our project so successful. Specifically I recall one occasion when the Journey of the Body CD led me into an extremely profound state of cellular consciousness - I felt like I was "IN" my tissue, or was a blood cell floating and rushing through my bloodstream. It's truly awesome and I highly recommend this set to any avid explorers of the higher levels of awareness.

"With "fascinating forensics and insider insights"(People), Leonard Goldberg has become a new master of the medical thriller. Now he reunites forensic pathologist Joanna Blalock and homicide detective Jake Sinclair in a cutting-edge novel about the mysteries of the mind-and the dangers of unraveling them. The discovery would have made Dr. Karen Crandell the most renowned neurologist in history. Using brain probes, she was attempting to recapture the aural and visual memories of her patients and unlock the final visions of the dying. It would have changed the face of medical science and criminal justice, had Dr. Crandell not apparently taken her own life in a suicidal plunge from Memorial Medical Center. But Joanna Blalock and Jake Sinclair suspect murder. To track the killer, they must delve into the victim's revolutionary research and go where they never imagined they could-into the dark recesses of the human brain."

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you reading.......2006-06-16

Brainwaves by Leonard Goldberg is a medical thriller that shows you various moods when reading it. A renowned neurologist Karen Crandell is found dead at the hospital, and the suspects may be frighteningly close to her. Who would want the patency of her work? It doesn't hit personal until another one is hit off at the hospital, but this one lives to talk about the case. This is another series where Jake and Joanna are partners again in. If you want to find the motives, and the answers to Karen Crandell's murder and problems, then pick up a copy of Brainwaves by Leonard Goldberg, and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Long and drawn out........2004-04-26

Although it isn't in the list of the Joanna Blalock series, Brainwaves is the 8th book in the series. Dr. Karen Crendall, a noted neurologist was found dead in Memorial Hospital. Simon Murdock is convinced it was a suicide. Jake & Joanna disagree. Dr. Crandall was on the verge of a medical breakthrough using brain tissue DNA to recapture aural and visual memories. Joanna and Jake are convinced it was murder. But to prove their case they have to use the victim's revolutionary research and enter the recesses of Dr. Crandall's mind to unveil a killer hidden in memory's darkest realm.
Lately, the books by Leonard Goldberg have been either really good or really bad. Unfortunately, the bad ones have outweighed the good. Brainwaves was just too long and drawn out. The very beginning was great and I thought I had another thriller in my hands but it wasn't to be. It was ok, but I wouldn't rush out to read it.

1 out of 5 stars More of the same poor plot and writing.......2003-04-13

One wonders what the LAPD did to the author Leonard Goldberg, that the author continues having his LAPD "premier homicide detective," Jake Sinclair, and his civilian girlfriend/partner Joanna Blalock, continue to act like Neanderthals, as they did in Goldberg's Fatal Care. When a doctor refuses to answer Jake's question about a national security matter, Joanna warns the doctor of "big trouble," and Jake tells the doctor that if helpful information were omitted, the doctor would be arrested, put in handcuffs, paraded down the hospital corridor and displayed to reporters. "You can answer their questions and show them your handcuffs at the same time."
In explaining the "NYPD Blue" show to Joanna's five-year-old nephew, Jake says that "nobody will care" if police officers hit suspects, so long as the suspect isn't shot. Jake tells Joanna he plans to handle two suspects "the old-fashioned way.... I'm going to shove them in a corner and scare the hell out of them."
When a suspect implies Jake is stupid, Jake lifts the suspect into the air by his shirt.
When an attorney objects to Jake questioning his client, Jake threatens to take the attorney and his client to jail, where they'll sit in the cold interrogation room.
When an intern refuses Jake admittance to the doctor's lounge, Jake threatens, "the last thing you want to do is get in the way of [an angry and upset] cop." Jake then picks the intern up by his armpits and moves him aside. Jake also misrepresents himself as "an officer of the court."
There's a misogynist thread to the book. A "middle aged" female neurosurgeon can't get anyone to sleep with her unless she pays them money. Women are continually described, and judged, depending on whether they have a "great body." Women are excluded from the list of murder suspects because women "kill with knives or poison or sometimes guns. But they don't bash people over the head.... And it would take a man to lift a dead body and lug it down the corridor...."
Goldberg's characters repeatedly define "nanotechnology" as meaning "where everything is scaled down a billion times." Although a nanometer is a billionth of a meter, it does NOT follow that nanotechnology is technology scaled down a billion times. Instead, nanotechnology is technology with dimensions of, usually, less than 100 nanometers. In a broader definition, nanotechnology can mean any sub-micron technology. Human hair is about 40,000 nanometers, or 40 microns, wide.
Goldberg finally puts his own previous book, Deadly Exposure, in the nightstand of one of this book's characters. That's just too cutesy.
This book is formulaic, Neanderthal, and lacking any elementary fact-checking. Skip this one -- hold out for the next one where, hopefully, Jake will be arrested for assault and rightfully thrown off the force and into jail.

2 out of 5 stars Pedestrian and predictable medical thriller........2003-02-11

Leonard Goldberg has been writing medical thrillers for a number of years, and they usually range from fair to good. His latest, "Brainwaves," is at the lower end of the spectrum. Joanna Blalock, chief forensic pathologist at Memorial Hospital and her live-in lover, homicide detective Jake Sinclair, are again the main characters. Joanna and Jake are putting their heads together to solve the mysterious murder of Karen Crandell, a brilliant neurologist who was conducting cutting edge research in the area of the human brain. Who wanted Karen dead? Was it one of her colleagues at the hospital, jealous of her success and perhaps anxious to take credit for her accomplishments?

"Brainwaves" does not succeed for a number of reasons. The dialogue is forced and stilted and the characters are one-dimensional. The book has a minimum of suspense, since there are only a few possible suspects. The science offers nothing new that has not been covered in other similar novels. I recommend that you skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars cutting edge medical thriller.......2002-11-16

Forensic pathologist Dr. Joanna Blalock is highly regarded in her field and frequently works with the police when their jobs overlap. Her favorite homicide detective to work with is her friend and live-in lover Jake Sinclair. They are now working together on the case of Dr. Karen Crandell, a neurologist who was found dead in her office. At first all signs point to a suicide, but Jake and Joanna soon figure out that somebody killed her but made it look like a realistic suicide.

Dr. Crandell was working on some cutting edge research that has mysteriously disappeared. Jake and Joanna are able to trace the theft and the killing to her colleague at the Brain Research Institution at Memorial Hospital but from there the trail goes cold. Joanna and Jake set a trap to catch a murderer, but can only hope he takes the bait.

Fans of Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs are going to like BRAINWAVES, a cutting edge medical thriller based on actual ongoing research. The mystery itself is fast paced and exciting but what makes this novel a scalpel cut above the rest is the way current technology is interposed throughout the story line, giving it a futuristic feel without slowing down the pace.

My wife was privileged to work under Pat Moffit Cook and we were thrilled to see Brainwave Symphony on the shelves when it was released. We have heard many CD sets, and none of them have met our expectations until now! If you have sleep problems, I can't recommend this set highly enough! The "Delta" CD worked wonders for our sleep patterns, and I often run the "Beta" CD all day long as I work. It really helps with focus and clarity. I am really looking forward to seeing what is next for Pat Moffit Cook!

4 out of 5 stars A refreshingly different kind of brain teaser book.......2004-01-27

Being a life-long lover of puzzles and mind games, I've collected lots of brain teaser books over the years. The title of this book really caught my eye. After all, aren't all brain teaser books "left-brained" by definition? Not necessarily so with this book.

The format is quite simple: each page shows a house-hold invention from the 18th or 19th century, along with the real life dimensions of the object written at the bottom of the page. Your challenge is to find out what exactly the device was used for. This forces you to think about things creatively, not just in a linearly logical way. Each answer also includes some very interesting history on how the tool was put into overall practice, and other related customs for the times.

There are countless puzzle books in print, most of them dealing with the same old word problems and lateral thinking problems. But this one offers something creatively different than the rest.

1 out of 5 stars Little discernible purpose behind the selection.......2002-12-05

This volume contains a large selection of photographs of primarily Victorian artefacts. Readers are invited to discern the purpose of each oddity - hence the claim to 'right brain' strengthening. I could not discern themes, trends or any guiding cognitive theory holding the assembly together. What the reader gets is a mish-mash of images more suited to an antique store fetishist. If poring over images of Victorian apple corers. toasters and other assorted early industrial artefacts, is your hobby, then this book is right up your alley. On the other hand, if you expected this book (which I bought on the assumption that it might have something interesting to say about right brain visualisation and cognition)to be of some intellectual value, you will be sadly disappointed. Ironically it is a book largely about rubbish; the rubbish of a bygone age. Happily, this book, a testimonial to that age, I suspect will soon be numbered among its ranks.
