Book Description

A homeless boy who lives in an airport with his father, moving from terminal to terminal trying not to be noticed, is given hope when a trapped bird finally finds its freedom.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fly Away Home.......2007-09-24

This is a wonderful book about homelessness from a child's point of view. The child likens himself to a bird trapped in the busy airport where he and his father live very carefully as to be undetected. A job for his father will free them to fly away from their temporary home like the bird that finally flies away when an automatic door opens one day.

5 out of 5 stars Great, realistic story.........2007-05-30

This book is more true to life then may people would like to a admit. As a school teacher, I have been using this book for years to share the plight of the working homeless. I have also worked in the homeless shelters of Boston and can't tell you how many people are struggling just to get on their feet. This book is sad, however you would been amazed how much empathy and new awareness an older child has after reading is wonderful piece of literature!

5 out of 5 stars Sticks with you.......2007-01-08

I'm now 20, but I remembered reading this book when I was much younger. It's come into my mind more than once, and I'm glad to've finally found the title of the book again. You see, this is the kind of book that'll stick with you for a very long time. You've read the plot summary, so you know that this isn't exactly a regular children's book in its mood, but if it is possible at all for a children's book to truly change the way a child looks at the world in such a way that the impression remains, this is such a book. The illustrations are beautiful and hazy and dreamlike, though the story exists not in a fantasy world, but in a very mature reality. The story is pretty unique, but the feelings of comfort and love are threads that any child could stand to learn from. I highly recommend this as a much needed book for any child's collection.

3 out of 5 stars Bizarre Homeless Tale.......2006-12-21

This story is quite bizarre and depressing. I'm keeping it for the collector's value. Thoughtful and synmpathetic. Problem: Sadly, there's no way a homeless father and son could live in an airport for more than a day or two in the post 9-11 era. Even the most ignorant security guard team would discover them and kick them out.

5 out of 5 stars Fly Away Home.......2006-05-26

This book is great and kind of sad. The way it's sad because it was about the kid and his father being poor and they got to live in an airport and they could be kicked out from there. Also, they are trying everything to get out of there and live a good life. Out of all the way the writing of the book is good.

Book Description

Celebrating Rush’s 30th anniversary, this retrospective of Canada’s most successful music group examines each of the band's approximately 20 lauded records and sold-out tours, eliciting fresh insights into the marriage of Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee’s classic, fearless art rock sound with Neil Peart's celebrated literary prowess. The product of extensive interviews with all three members and corroborating evidence from key insiders and press, this unprecedented examination features previously unpublished candid photographs by official band photographer Andrew MacNaughtan. Musings on playing live and the grind of touring are presented, revealing the trio’s evolution over the past three decades. A critical eye is focused on the band’s vast catalog, resulting in a comprehensive, forward-moving celebration of one of the most respected yet secretive bands in the music business—one that has never been revealed in book form so personally, directly, or so willingly.

It also contains some fantastic pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Just can't get enough .......2007-07-30

What else is there to say. When you are a true fan of an awesome, talented, 3-man group such as Rush, you can't get enough material to read. Always interesting, always a pleasure to read about someone that you love.

4 out of 5 stars Must for Rush Fans.......2007-06-19

Great for all Rush fans only. It's easy to read and enjoyable. Answers some questions but not all. It's still fun! Peace

4 out of 5 stars Good book. Fun read........2007-05-08

I liked it. It's true, what the other reviews say: it's all somewhat superficial and no one ever gets to talking about what color underwear they have on or what they put on their toast in the morning - but so what? There's just a whole lot of information here, and pictures pictures pictures everywhere - you want more? Marry one of the guys! I was perfectly happy. Mind you I don't consider myself a "fan" per se, but I know a whole lotta Rush - and I feel I know a lot more now that I've read the book. An enjoyable read overall!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book!.......2007-04-16

Lots of Info on the Making of Albums and Tours, a nice overview of the Band.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures but damaged.......2007-01-09

I bought this for my father for Christmas. The pictures in the book were beautiful and the layouts were a nice added touch. However, the cover of the book was scratched and torn, like it had been mishandled. Unfortunatly, because it took so long to get to me, I didn't have time to send it back and get a new one. The book its self was beautiful however the condition was disapointing and destracted from the beauty of the book.

Tiny Houses contains the plans for forty-four houses so small that anyone can afford to have one—and so thoughtfully designed that anyone can build one—each offering the dream of solitude, a place to escape for a weekend of romance, meditation, or whimsy. Award-winning architect Lester Walker shows how, with a little energy and imagination, everyone's dream of owning a home, or having a second home in the country, is within reach.

5 out of 5 stars A great little book.......2004-12-21

This book has whetted my apetite for building small, tiny homes for years. I highly recommend it.

A great idea is simply to make one of these places in the backyard someplace to keep warm while getting away from it all.

5 out of 5 stars Tiny Houses, Big Ideas.......2000-10-03

I've owned Walker's book since I picked it up on a sale table eight or nine years ago. It's probably given me more enjoyable fantasy hours than any other book I own. I hope to build my own office/studio in the woods behind my house, and this book has fueled my dreams. I may never get around to building any of these structures, but I've been rewarded many times over by the inspiration of "Tiny, Tiny Houses."

1 out of 5 stars Coverage dated.......1999-10-28

Who would think 1987 would look so dated? A few of the "dwellings" are amusing but the hippy look and scrap construction makes me think most photos were from the 60's.

5 out of 5 stars Great for any age!.......2007-10-02

This is meant to be a survival guide for living on your own for the first time, but I assure you that it is much, much more. This book is useful for people of any age, even if you've been paying the rent for more years than you'd like to admit.

Everything from the expected info on nutrition and cooking (including microwaving real meals), shopping tips, getting stains out of laundry and a how-to on car repair thrown in for good measure.

I don't know about you, but Mom sure never told me how to recognize the symptoms of STD's, but it's in here, along with millions of other cool and useful things.

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect graduation present.......2007-05-29

This is a must have for high school graduates going off to college or moving away from home. We have given away a dozen copies since we gave our daughters a copy when they went off to college. Every one loved it and our girls still use theirs even though they are now married.

5 out of 5 stars Where's Mom Now that I need her........2007-05-12

I wanted to purchase this book for my son who just finished his first year of college and will be in his own apartment at school next year. A friend had this book that was given to her 20 years ago. I love the updated version, and the fact that the book is in a 3 ring binder is great for adding your own ideas. I also purchased a copy for me and when my daughter goes off to college in 6 years I hope to purchase another one.
GREAT IDEA MOM.

5 out of 5 stars A great book !!!.......2007-04-12

I bought this cookbook for my son, who is away at college and on his own. Not only does it have fast and easy recipes, (now that he is cooking himself...)but it also has grocery shopping tips, first aid, car and home repairs. I heard about this book from a friend and saw how many things it had for information for some one just getting to be on their own. A great reference book for any one!
Check it out. You will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Where's Mom...book review.......2007-01-05

This book is really great from all aspects...I like the helpful hints as well as the recipes...it all applies as we have our young people starting lives of their own out in the world of wonders.

I just happened to just give it to my son yesterday. He is in college several hours from home and moved into an apartment on his own. It was such a bonding moment when I handed it to him...what was his reply? "Mom...you really don't think you can be replaced by a book, do you?" Wow...what a profound moment! Well...as he's learning the lessons of life, this is an excellent resource tool for him to use. I plan on ordering three more for my daughters when they head out on their own as well!

Book Description

Insight into Starbucks's rise to worldwide recognition is given in this tale of marketing success. From three college friends' dreams of coffee beans to the cafés that are open on nearly every street corner, Starbucks has grown immensely with three new shops opening every day across the world. Full of interesting facts about the coffee giant, the book includes a rare interview with CEO Howard Schultz.

Each title in this series features an in-depth, biographical look at one of today's top brands, such as Guinness, Adidas, and Starbucks. The brands included have all established themselves not only as financial successes but also as cultural icons. The storytelling style and eye-catching design of the books make learning about these innovative brands stimulating and enjoyable.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2005-06-09

This book can be finished in a day! I simply couldn't put it down. It's written as a story so you get quickly pulled into the storyline to find out the end. Although, you already know the ending...Starbucks is one of the most admired brands and successful companies ever known.

So how did they do it? This book answers this question and more. What I enjoyed about the book is that it opened the door to the heart and soul of Starbucks to reveal their evolution and foundation. As I prepare my business plan, this book has been more helpful to me than typical business plan books. A lot of times those books provide heartless examples of companies. Sure you've got a great idea for a product or service, but how do you translate that into a brand? What is in the best interest for your customer? After all, Starbucks just sells coffee and coffee related products - nothing extravagant alone, but the mystical & romantic experience surrounding their coffee is a distinctive brand that is difficult to match.

This book answers the Who? Where? When? Why? How? of the Starbucks development - their trials, errors and commitment to their beliefs. The concepts discussed in the book are things that I feel touch every business, yet this book provides consistent examples of how to address them.

Concepts such as:-
-Growth & development
-Branding
-Why you don't have to franchise to be successful brand
-Rewarding customers by first rewarding employees ("partners") and suppliers
-Turning down profitable alternatives if it sacrifices the customer's overall experience or a partner's view of the company

I must admit I have not read "Pour your heart into it" so I can't comment on any similarities/differences between the two books. What I can say is that if you are interested in creating a world-class company and want to learn how to infuse your company with a soul (rather than focusing on your product development) to ensure success, then this is your book!

5 out of 5 stars Almost completely awesome!.......2007-05-22

I was a bit dissappointed with the ending, first because it's the end of the PS series, and the other because it sort of leaves you hanging. What the heck happened with Jake and Sam?!?!?!?!?!?!? I'm so clueless. Jake grabbed her hand and led her away, and then... ? And what's with Darby? Lying down beside a half-wild Mustang doesn't exactly make her a horse whisper. Sam and the Phantom have a much more complicated relationship going on. OK, OK I'll admit it was a brave thing lying in the snow with her, and Darby reminds me of myself, (pale, skinny, horse freak, breathing difficulties, etc.). This book was awesome, I'm just wondering what happens with Sam and Jake.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Ending to An Amazing Series.......2007-03-24

Everything was wrapped up in this final installment of the Phantom Stallion series. Linc Slocum was arrested, the Kenworthy's took over the Gold Dust Ranch with Ryan Slocum and renamed it Harmony Ranch, Brynna had a baby boy named Cody (although the original due date was January 17, but it's not surprising to have had the baby come earlier) and the Phantom can't be captured if he stays near or in the horse valley that he normally keeps his herd in because that land now belongs to the Forsters'!!!!! Whoooooo!!!

I'd also like to tell everyone about an awesome PS Fansite that I am very active on. It's called Wild Horse Valley, and if you go to the Forum, you can find tons of stuff. I go by HorseGirl there! There are also contests around the site, summaries, ect. On the Forum, you can chat about the books, horses, or whatever floats your boat! Go to: [...] Terri Farley's #1 Fansite!

(Please for all of you that have Phantom Stallion fansites, don't take that into offense. It's just a little taste of competition!)

- Wild Horse Valley also has the first Phantom Stallion Newspaper, over the Internet of course! It's called the Phantom Stallion Reader. I am staff, and write the column, Running Free on Wild Horse Island (name credits from me!) and it is all about Terri Farley's brand new horse series, Wild Horse Island! Check out my article, click on one of the two links on the WHV blog, and mine will be the first one to the left. You can find out ALL about Wild Horse Island! Hope everyone joins!

- Poor you, K. Rogers. Darby is the main character of the next horse series! I hope you read the books anyway!

5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-23

I was sort of sad when I got this book, since I knew it was the last one but it is great! The ending is wonderful and it's filled with adventure and action right to the end. I don't want to give it anyway for anyone but it's great. Brynna has her baby and the Phantom is at risk of being captured through most of the book. The only part that kind of annoyed me was Darby, I didn't care for her.
But all in all this was awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Thanks, Terri .......2006-12-21

dreams aren't just things that happen in the dark and in your mind. they can happen for real--- and if you go to Terri's website you'll see what i mean.
terri helped me understand that real life, honest to goodness, not so special people can do good things too. you don't have to be a rock star or something, you just have to dream hard enough, love more than is practical, and believe in the unbelievable.
the phantom does exist. she proved it!!! i believe in him. God worked a miracle, and he can do many more.
my dream is to own an honest to goodness black arabian stallion named Shetan, aka the Black, and i don't really care if he takes me to the top or not.
he'll be there--- that's all that will matter.
and terri, if you read this, i hope it makes you smile
thanks so much--- and do us a favor--- don't stop writing about mustangs and crazy dreams.

this is the best book ever!! it's sad that this is the last book in the series, although this is a great ending. my favorite part is at the end, when everything works just comes together. the author didn't leave anything hanging for you to wonder about. everyone should but this book, including the rest of the series!

For me, this book did nothing but waste my money. This book should have been entitled The Everything Destination RESORT Wedding Book because most of the information said "your resort should include..." I am not planning a resort wedding, and this book did NOTHING to help me. Save yourself the money, hit up the internet and do the research yourself. This book has nothing that you can't - and won't - find anywhere else. If you feel you need some book or magazine on destination weddings, pick up one of the many wedding magazines that are focusing on them rather than chucking out the cash for this. This book is especially unhelpful for those planning weddings within the continental US - just because it is still in the same country doesn't mean it still can't be a destination.

5 out of 5 stars Motel Mania - Next Exit.......2004-10-01

I have read several of this author's books and they have never let me down. Sure, it's light reading. But there were lots of info that I found very entertaining (I am in the travel/tourist business). What I liked most was the way the author pointed out the different eras of the motels in the USA. He discussed the big chain motels as well as the small mom and pop operations. This book will bring back memories to anyone who stayed in a motel that boasted of having "air conditioned" rooms.

      3 out of 5 stars A Colorful Lightweight.......2001-10-25

I've been a fan of Margolies since his first book, and I ordered this with high expectations.

Unfortunately, this book is almost completely advertisements and memorabia. There is very little narrative. Like another reviewer, I was quite disappointed that there was only a sketchy outlining of the various transitions that motels have progressed through over the generations. I got the impression that Mr. Margolies probably had most of these old brochures, cards, maps, etc., and simply assembled these in a chronological format.

On the other hand, if you are a fan of Margolies's photography, his own photographs in the book match his earlier photographic achievements.

This book is probably worth the price of admission, but I'd like to see a more comprehensive history of twentieth-century hospitality industry.

      5 out of 5 stars Fun reading.......2000-08-18

Anyone who enjoys reading about roadside culture will enjoy this book. It brings back great memories of those family roadtrips and how exciting it was as a kid to stay in a motel. It also entices you to seek out the quirky and fun motels next time you're in need of an overnight stay. John Margolies is an excellent author and photographer. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Spectacular photography and good historical summary.......1999-08-05

For all of us who stayed at the one and two story roadside motels of the 1960s and 1970s, this book will bring back great travel memories as well as educate us on the precurser to these lodging establishments. Fascinating and fast reading and it made me go out and locate some of the motels near my residence. The only down side is that it could have used a little more history on the early motel chains and the history of their demise. A section on motel bilboards would also have been entertaining. Otherwise, a great historical book.
