never received it.......2005-09-18
Ordered this book a few weeks ago. Never received it. Had to go purchase a new copy at much greater expense.
Book Description
* Each character is shown in both simplified and traditional form, along with its pronunciation and meaning. Information is given about the radical (essential for finding it in a Chinese dictionary) and other components. The character configuration and stroke order are clearly shown, along with other tips to help form it correctly. A grid of practice squares for each character page allows the user to build confidence in writing Chinese.
* Several compounds are also listed for each character. Each of these is likewise accompanied by its pronunciation, meaning and an example sentence (also transliterated and translated). These compounds and sentences build vocabulary and give extra practice in reading Chinese. All compounds are listed in an alphabetical index at the end of the book for ready reference.
* Each set of 10 characters is followed by a quiz containing a variety of imaginative exercises to review and practice the recently learned characters.
* Each set of 50 characters is followed by a "Character Building" section designed to build familiarity with identifying radicals within characters, a Review of vocabulary learned, and a Word Puzzle as an enjoyable way of revising the material covered to that point.

Buy it if you want to learn Mandarin characters.......2007-05-13
This book will give you a very good start to character literacy. It should be used in conjunction with a program that gives you practice in pronunciation. (I've not found one shoe that fits all.) I'd recommend buying this book and v.2 along with the separately published Pimsleur CD's.
Excellent.......2007-05-13
This book is absolutely one of the two keys to learning Mandarin. (The other is the Pimsleur programs.) I never thought I'd learn this challenging language, even though I'm conversant in three LOTE already; but this book is helping me learn how to write in Mandarin. It also has each new character or word in various contexts to show shades of meaning, which is really important in a tonal language.
I highly recommend this and its companion volume, 1, along with the Pimsleur program, which I'm sure you can get on Amazon.
Get the flash cards instead.......2007-03-09
My only issue with this book is that it is almost completely redundant with the flash cards (Chinese In A Flash) offered by the same author and publisher. I have found the flash cards to be a much more effective way to learn Chinese characters, and so am disappointed about having also purchased the book. Although the book does sometimes include a sentence or two about a character's origin, which could in principle be useful for remembering that character, these sentences usually refer to the traditional character rather than the simplified one, and are usually too brief and simplistic to be of much use anyway. So my advice would be to buy the flashcards instead of the book - they contain the identical information, but in a more compact, easy-to-use format.
A fine way to learn Chinese Characters.......2007-01-31
I love this book. If you're looking to get started on the written Chinese language, I really can't think of a better source of instruction. Each page consists of one single character. For each character every stroke is broken down, the character is explained and half the page is empty squares of practice space. You can also buy flash cards that go along with the book. Writing in Chinese is the best thing ever and if you've wanted a good starting spot then here it is. After you finish this one there is another book of 250 more characters. I like this, it's good and it does me well.
Highly recommended for people at right stage of study........2007-01-21
I love this book.
I am learning conversational Chinese and pinyin, and even gaining a basic knowledge of the Hanzi adds a whole new dimension.
Not only do I find learning the charaters fun - they really are quite beautiful things - but quite often I have 'penny dropping' moments where something about a character fills a gap in my understanding and things make more sense. As an aside, I am amazed at how logically Chinese works, and am so glad I don't have to learn English.
To be clear, I would not recommend this to someone with NO knowledge of Chinese. You need to HEAR the language and pronunciation first and foremost.
But even at my basic stage (around a 450 word vocab), starting the Hanzi is wonderful. I had actually picked up the 'first' 100 or so just by studying pinyin and looking at the Hanzi supplied, but being given the stroke order is a major help.
One small suggestion for the author or editors if they ever read this: Adding some arrows on the diagrams to make it 100% clear which way some of the smaller strokes should be drawn would make it even more helpful.

Book Description
VICE AND VIRTUE IN EVERYDAY LIFE has been a bestseller in college ethics for more than two decades because it is well-liked by both instructors and students. Instructors appreciate it for its philosophical breadth and seriousness. Students welcome the engaging topics and irresistible readings. VICE AND VIRTUE IN EVERYDAY LIFE provides students with a lively selection of classical and contemporary readings on pressing matters of personal and social morality. The text includes an overview of seminal ethical theories, as well as a unique set of stimulating articles on matters of social responsibility, personal integrity and individual virtue. While the readings consistently represent different points of view, the book maintains a strong sense of the importance of avoiding cruelty and practicing kindness in a well-lived life.

Vice and Virtue .......2005-09-30
The book was very marked-up and highlites are only helpful if someone highlights well. These highlights were very sloppy and didn't even highlight topics or statements that were useable.
vice and virtue.......2001-09-20
this is a wonderful and enlightening book I recommended to all with an open mind.
Decent Introduction to Ethics.......2001-04-02
I came across this book as required reading for my intro to ethics course. The first chapter was very interesting, but as time passed, I grew somewhat disinterested. While it is a very nice collection of ethics articles, it lacks TRUE diversity.
The readings are fairly diverse, though only within the realm of "common" ethics -- very little space is given to opposition philosophers such as Nietzsche, Crowley, Russell, etc.
Overall, the editors have done a grand job of presenting articles on the more prevalent issues in ethics, both past and present. It could have been more enjoyable (to me) with the inclusion of vastly opposing arguments, but I must say that it does serve the purpose quite well in that it makes you analyze your own beliefs. Highly recommended for those who desire varied readings in "compassionate" ethics; interesting, but not of utmost importance to those looking for more diversity.
This is a great book on ethics, and is a MUST READ.......1999-09-06
This book on ethics is very well-written and its just delightful to read. Don't miss this book, it shou be high on everyone's reading list!

Excellent book alternative to myriad of lame Christian "dating books".......2005-07-11
I bought this book originally looking for a good well-reasoned alternative to the wasteland of pathetic Christian dating/marriage books on the market (e.g. I kissed dating goodbye). Specifically something that shared wisdom from past ages and was well reasoned and articulate.
This book met all of these expectations and more. My (now) wife and I re-read much of this book while we were dating and engaged, and it provided numerous hours for discussions about out thinking on marriage.
This book should be preferred reading for college age or older folks seriously interested in courtship/marriage, and want a larger frame of reference than the current culture. The articles are relavant, thought-provoking, and the best of western literature. It would also make an excellent source for a discussion group.
Alternatives, Not Answers.......2004-11-10
If you don't like reading "classic" literature - that is, literature from another time, place and era, with a perspective utterly distinct (and even contrary) to our own - don't buy this book, as it's an anthology composed solely of excerpts from this literature.
If you do, however, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Not because it will tell you what to think about love, sex, and marriage (as if there is an "answer" to be found!), but because it will give you perspectives other than the one you have for considering your own life.
Propaganda?.......2002-05-03
Natasha pretends to be a stone-hard woman who stands at the crossroads of social change while wondering in aristocratic fashion why so many stand in the way of Herstory; in reality she is an emotionally constipated wallflower and contents herself with feeling superior to those less insecure than herself. "Joe Mama" is a pseudo-intellectual poseur who wants us to wink at his sarcastic, bohemian persona while being silently impressed with his knowing sophistication, which he thinks is demonstrated by some obscure allusion to the writings of "evolutionary psychology" he is too stupid even to be able to parrot.
Ad Hominem attacks are as easy as they are irrelevant, aren't they?
I must have missed class the day they taught us that not only marriage but politeness as well had been dispensed with by the enlightened perspectives of "evolutionary psychology" and "modern sociological studies". Apparently Joe and Natasha were present however, which is why they can advise the rest of us that "Amy and Leon" have "done it again" in promoting "absurd moral values" and thereby "making [Joe] puke" and Natasha "Mmmmmmm" in smug disapproval. Nevertheless I doubt that 630 pages worth of commentary from Darwin (apparently he was not "evolutionary" enough for Joe), Plato (who recommended full equality for women in his "Republic"), Jane Austen (single, female, educated, independently wealthy, and famous--a real doormat, wouldn't you say), and other such fossils can be summed up by the assertion that "women should remain demure, submissive, and concern themselves above all with finding and keeping an attractive husband". Needless to say, such simplistic indoctrination, as opposed to reasoned argument, is far from Leon and Amy Kass as editors and contributors to this volume. For those who want to understand marriage as something more than a futile gesture or the vestigial opiate of slant-browed society, this is your book. To those for whom marriage is not a problematic issue, either through happy circumstance or simple indifference, good luck with being clueless.
The wisdom of the ages...or throwbacks to an earlier time?.......2001-12-05
Some reviewers seem insistent that Amy and Leon Kass are stuck in a cultural and intellectual backwater, still insisting on ideas and values that are badly out of date.
Others say that Leon and Amy Kass have written the best answer to modern misunderstandings and mistakes concerning marriage and sexual relationships.
They are accused of trying to force their narrow, archaic views of the sexual nature of humanity.
They are also accused of depending strangely on ancient writings that have little 'scientific' value.
Leon and Amy Kass admit themselves that most of the writings they draw from are old--but the value of such writings is in finding what the people who wrote them have in common with modern times.
Basic facts of life--like the connection between sexuality and reproduction, the connection between monagomy and stable societies, and the connection between morality and healthy relationships--are the themes that hold this book together.
The book tends to question many modern assumptions--not for the purpose of turning back the clock, but for the purpose of finding a way to improve the future prospects in relationships, marriages, and society in general.
At no point do the editors preach to the reader. Instead, they encourage the reader to think--and to feel--and to explore the meaning of being a human being.
This book is written for college-level reading, although an intelligent high school student (one who has been trained to think for himself) can readily understand it.
Wing to Wing, Oar to Oar: Another Sentence.......2001-08-03
Amy and Leon do quite a job with traditional texts. It is not an accident that the only evidence for such absurd moral values is found in ancient texts. Ancient texts provide excellent material for modern sociological studies. Fantastic, really. If you take your bearings from the Kasses' book, I would suggest to you that you check out First Things "the Journal of Religion and Public Life" and read about the many reasons women should remain demure, submissive and concern themselves above all with finding and keeping an attractive husband. Mmmmmm. God, like Homer works in mysterious ways.
Book Description
Everyday Arguments combines brief argument rhetoric with an anthology of illustrative readings drawn from arguments of everyday life. The anthology of readings is closely tied to the principles and practices introduced in the rhetoric section. The overarching philosophy of the reading selections (and of the book as a whole) is that written argument in all its variety is the most common form of writing and that much can be learned about its practice from the texts we encounter on a daily basis. Ideal for individuals interested in learning to develop argumentative and persuasive writing skills.

Here is an astoundingly rich and needed addition to spiritual literature. With Sisyphean diligence, Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat have managed to compile an extraordinary array of spiritual passages from writers across time and regardless of religious denomination, from the lyricist Leonard Cohen to the philosopher Jacob Needleman, from the mystic Christian Meister Eckhart to the novelist Annie Dillard, from the Zen master Robert Aitken to the poet Robert Haas. Read this book, contemplate it and learn the ABCs of spiritually, of life.
Book Description
An audiobook that belongs in every seeker's home, Spiritual Literacy answers the universal question, "How can I live a spiritual life every day?" Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, who have been covering contemporary culture and the spiritual renaissance for more than twenty-five years, believe that we can read the texts of our lives and of the world around us for sacred meaning. All we need is spiritual literacy.
To illustrate their point, the Brussats present "readings" about daily life from present-day authors -- spiritual teachers, essayists, novelists, filmmakers, poets, naturalists, and social activists. This collection is unprecedented -- an enthralling treasury of brief "aha!" passages from such writers as Maya Angelou, Thich Nhat Hanh, and many more.
These remarkable readings tutor us in the art of lingering with our and experiences and seeing the world with fresh eyes. Life's meaning and the presence of Spirit are found in the shape of a child's foot, in an encounter with a wild animal, or in the process of preparing a meal.
You will want to create a place in your home for this profound and revelatory resource. It is one audiobook you can share with your children, colleagues, and friends as you explore together the bounties of the spiritual life.

A valuable collection.......2007-08-12
This is such a great book to pick up at any time and feel some inspiration! There are so many different topics. Read one or read for an hour. Stop and start wherever you want. Makes a nice gift for a friend in good times or bad.
Spiritual Literacy: Reading the Sacred in Everyday Life.......2007-04-06
This is an amazing book. I've given three away and finally decided I had to own one myself. I learned of the book on the show New Morning on the Hallmark Channel. The show would often include quotes which were credited to this book. I found myself often jotting down the quotes and finally decided that owning the book might be the way to go. It is written in a way that you can read even a portion of a page at a sitting if you don't have a great deal of time, and you can open the book anywhere and read. I totally recommend it.
God is in the details of daily life.......2006-12-31
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat are the Directors of SpiritualityandPractice.com. Both
are journalists who have spent more than thirty years identifying and reviewing resources for people on spiritual journeys. They also write a monthly column on "Spiritual Practices" for The Lutheran magazine and their book is on the recommended reading list of Luther Seminary.
Spiritual Literacy is a collection of 650 spiritual vignettes culled from a vast array of literary and religious sources and held together with personal commentaries and anecdotes. Each is designed to cultivate our ability to listen deeply--to hear "with the ear of our hearts." As one of the top spiritual books in print today, it is a wonderful source of wisdom and insight into the spiritual life we all try to hone. The editors have included passages of poetry, prose, every conceivable vantage point and different religious orientations ranging from lyricist Leonard Cohen to philosopher Jacob Needleman; Christian mystic Meister Eckhart to writers Maya Angelou, Annie Dillard, Wendell Berry, Ram Dass, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Robert Fulghum, Thich Nhat Hanh, Barbara Kingsolver, Kathleen Norris, Henri J. M. Nouwen, Anne Tyler, and many more.
With such diversity there is much to inspire us to "read the signs that point to the active presence of Spirit in the world around us" --signs written in the very texts of our own experiences. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of spirituality: objects, places, animals, nature, leisure, creativity, service, relationships, community and more. At the end of each section, the authors provide suggestions for activities, exercises, and rituals.
Here is a timely selection that G. K. Chesterton wrote about Santa Claus:
What has happened to me has been the very reverse of what appears to be the experiences of most of my friends. Instead of dwindling to a point, Santa Claus has grown larger and larger in my life. It happened in this way. As a child I was faced with a phenomenon requiring explanation. I hung up at the end of my bed an empty stocking, which in the morning became a full stocking. I had done nothing to produce those things that filled it. I had not worked for them, or made them or helped to make them. And the explanation was that a certain being people called Santa Claus was favorably disposed toward me. What we believed was that a certain benevolent agency did give us those toys for nothing. And, as I say, I believe it still. I have merely extended the idea. Then I only wondered who put the toys in the stocking. Now I wonder who put the stocking by the bed, and the bed in the room and the room in the house, and the house on this planet, and the great planet in the void. (p. 267)
As one of your New Year's resolutions make Spiritual Literacy a part of each day and you will see that the world is alive and moving toward you with rare epiphanies and wonderful surprises. Pay attention to the rhythms of life not just the ripples, the currents and not the waves. Remember when you put a seashell to your ear it is not the ocean that you hear but the flowing of our own blood, the pulsations of your inner ocean. "For lack of attention," wrote the English mystic Evelyn Underhill, "a thousand forms of loveliness elude us every day."
A Must-Have, Inspiring Resource!.......2006-11-10
When a friend gave me "Spiritual Literacy," I had no idea what a treasure I was holding in my hands. I love this book so much, I have gifted many copies to other friends, and it is among my top favorite spiritual books in my permanent nightstand collection. No matter your religious faith, one cannot help but be deeply moved, inspired, enlightened and comforted by reading one short story or "reading" after another, being reminded that the sacred truly is in the every day and the ordinary. Every page is a full of the gifts of wisdom and pleasure. "Spiritual Literacy" is a book I'll read and cherish throughout my entire life. And, I'll continue to gift it to as many people as I can. That's how wonderful it is!
spiritual intelligence is a skill.......2005-05-10
The editors of this enriching collection quote a broad spectrum of spiritual passages and shorter comments from writers throughout history, with different religious orientations, ranging from lyricist Leonard Cohen to philosopher Jacob Needleman; Christian mystic Meister Eckhart to writers Maya Angelou and Annie Dillard. With its diverse prose and poetry, there is much to inspire readers to "read the signs that point to the active presence of Spirit in the world around us."
In the introduction, the editors comment, "Do you need to have reached some state of enlightenment to be able to decode the world? Some traditions do see such understanding as a gift or 'awakening', but we believe it is a skill that can be developed." This cornucopia of readings can be a guiding and enriching way to help do just that.

i have purchased this item twice in my life time for various reasons. each purchase is so worth it.
Good.......2007-01-05
Not bad...again repeats itself a bit from the other books in the series, although DOES have its own theme...the extra notes and stuff are things the author has already mentioned
sweet little book for fortune telling.......2006-03-29
This book is nice and compact. It has all kinds of ideas on how to tell your fortune. I got this book to help my son develope his skills and for me to try other forms of divination. I would recommend this book to someone who is interested in learning more about fortune telling.
Outstanding , Exceeding My Expectations!.......2005-09-23
Coming from the well renowned author, gillian kemp, this book has various techniqes to help you read your future and even the present and past. As always in this series of books, the ingrediants area fairly easy to manage and the instruction can be followed by even a gold fish! The wonderful look of this book is very attractive, with old looking pages, some handwritten spells, and things that make it look like an antique. So if you've been looking for a good, small but very reliable divination book, look no further than this special treasure!
EXCELLENT!!!.......2005-07-23
I have always wanted a sweet small book that explained several fortune telling techniques in a 'simple' & 'understandable' manner. This book is it!! It's small, adorable and complete for the novice. It's unfortunate amazon no longer carries it. The contents: crystal ball reading, hydromancy, apple divinations, playing cards-cartomancy, candle majic, dice, marriage folklore, tea leaves, bay leaf. Absolutely everything is to the point and well presented. It is so easy to apply. It feels majical holding this beautiful little book. Lovely and talky as the author writes in after thoughts by hand. It also gives the history of playing cards (description of every card and spread) and dice (ditto). It's full of tidbits of knowledge to apply immediately - no heavy study and not so complex it ends up on your shelf. All inclusive and wonderful! A big thank you to the author!
