I bought 3 books as give aways in my Curves Clubs. The ladies love the books and we have Desperate Housewives tasting days. It is easy to use and has many different tastes and styles from which to choose.

I received a copy of this cookbook for Christmas (Thank you, Santa.) The book was all that I was expecting it to be and then some. Cookbook fans and Desperate Housewives fans alike will enjoy this book, and if you are both, even better! It is an honest-to-goodness cookbook, with a twist. It's also like a Desperate Housewives "scrapbook", with photos, snippets from the show and some cooking history for each of the "Housewives."

Obviously, the five "Housewives" of Wisteria Lane did not write these recipes, although they are presented as though they did. Christopher Styler is the creator of these wonderful recipes, capturing the style of each "Housewife". From Bree's perfectly fancy treats to Susan's fool-proof, simple dishes, there are a variety of cooking styles presented and a number of dishes available for each style. The photos of the dishes are great and reflect the appropriate housewife style even in presentation. (Check out photos of Lynette's dishes and you'll see a pacifier and plastic dinosaurs in the background.)

I like the fact that the cookbook is arranged in six different "Housewife" sections, one section for each of the five principal "Housewives" of the show and one section for the "neighbors" of Wisteria Lane. As a result, this cookbook is effectively grouped by style, rather than by course or food category. You want something fancy and intricate? Go to Bree's section. You want basic family fare? Check out Lynnette's. You're looking for a seductive, romantic meal? Go straight to Edie's section. (By the way, if you do want to see a list of all the salads in the cookbook, just go to the index in the back and look under Salad.)

Included in the collection are also recipes for dishes that have been either featured or implicated on the show, such as Susan's famous Macaroni and Cheese, Bree's muffins, Felicia's Macaroons and even Mrs. Huber's Smoothie (remember the blender?).

I do have to tell you that the first time I used the cookbook; I decided to do a three-course DH meal, with each course from a different section. I used Bree's Boston Lettuce & Chili-Toasted Walnut Salad (everyone loved the walnuts!), Susan's Shopping Bag Chicken (which I doubled) and Felicia's Wisteria Lane Icebox Napoleon dessert (with which I took a "Lynnette shortcut" and used a pudding mix). My family and guests loved it all!

The highlight was when I was cooking Susan's Shopping Bag Chicken. As I went to stir the chicken and veggies in the roasting pan after the first 15 minutes, my roasting pan (which is still very new) started to slide off the oven rack as I pulled out the rack. The whole thing started coming at me...and it was hot! I quickly said a couple of unprintable things, dropped my spoon, grabbed the other hot pad and managed to stop the roasting pan before it hit the floor. I pushed the pan back onto the rack, picked up two pieces of chicken off the floor, rinsed them, tossed them into the pan and with as much dignity as I could muster, closed the oven door. I then turned to my startled guests and said "Well, that wasn't in the recipe." And then without missing a beat, "but then, it WAS Susan's recipe!"

While I can't "guarantee" the same exciting results I had, I can say the food was great and I would love to make it again (with less drama, I hope). Whether you actually make any of the dishes from this cookbook or not, you'll enjoy looking at it.

I received this cookbook as a gift, and I absolutely love it! I'm a huge fan of the show, plus I'm a cookbook junkie. This cookbook really suprised me with how many good recipes is has. It includes foods and ideas that everyone can make and eat: family meals, comfort foods, healthy dishes, fancy feasts, and more.

I bought this book as a fan of Desperate Housewives. It is, however, inappropriate for most fans. It is a collection of 17 essays on DH, primarily feminist writings. I slogged through three essays and gave up. They seem to be well-written, but they were just too academic and dry for me.

The chapters are (1) Culture, (2) Sexual Politics, (3) Genre, Gender, and Cultural Myths, (4) Narrative, Confssion and Intimacy. All of these topics are of interest to me, but I still couldn't handle the writing style and content---just too dry and frankly, boring. If you are looking for very serious, academic writing, and are a DH fan, you could potentially enjoy this book.

The book includes an episode guide for seasons one and two, an extensive bibliography, an index, and a film and tv guide. The authors are all distinguished writers and critics. It seems to me that it would be a great resource for a graduate level media class. I would not ever recommend it for regular fans, however, even committed ones like me.

If you are a fan of Desperate Houswives, then this is for you. It's choc-full of various bits and pieces all relating to the show.
With chapters such as The Tangled Wisteria Lane, The Housewives, Desperate Husbands, The Houseguests and Episode Guide to name a few, there is something for everyone here of interest. There are great pictures (mostly stills from the show), quotes from various characters and information regarding the way the program is made. There are in-depth interviews with the cast and their profiles and on and on.
I was given this today as a gift and it's so ideal because I'm a fan. So if you are looking for a gift too, or just a treat for yourself, then pick this up because it's very good and there is a lot of fun reading to do.

Anyone who loves "Desperate Housewives" and wants to get as much of the inside scoop as possible should be getting the DVD and this book. While the interviews and profiles of the ensemble cast detailed in the book make reading about the "Desperate Housewives" experience gratifying, it is so much more as it takes us on the joyride of reliving much of the show's endearing moments by capturing all the crazy one-liners and quotable quotes. From Edie's infamous "FYI" to Susan in retort; to Karl's "The Heart Wants What It Wants"; to Julie's advice to Susan, "I always assumed I'd have sex for the first time before you had it again"; to Rex's indignance to Bree, "You're in the NRA. You own, like, four guns. If somebody broke in, I'd expect you to protect me"; to Bree's sarcastic snap-back, "Do me a favor, Rex.     As a committed fan of Desperate Housewives, I enjoyed this collection of 17 fun essays probing various ideas, opinions, and critiques about DH. The topics were diverse and thought provoking. For example, one essay was entirely about DH homes, called "Oh Give Me a Home: Deconstructing the Houses of Desperate Housewives". Another essay was "Why I Hate Lynette and Why That Could Be a Compliment"; yet another was identifying with Lynette. It was indeed a type of psychoanalysis of the characters, the episodes, the themes, etc. But for a fan, this type of analysis is far from dull.

    The writing style is interesting, often tongue-in-cheek, with about half of the writers having previously been attorneys, and the other half professional writers. I would call the writing style in between an academic tome and a fan book---for me a perfect, thought-provoking, intelligent adventure of a book.

    I found this book online and I could not put it down! I am a geek for feminism and pop culture pieces so it made this a fun read before reading academic literature. Being really into gender studies I find the TV show desperate housewives addicting because there is a lot of fascinating depictions in the show about the lives of suburbian women.
    The book is probably better with cultural criticism from a literary light. However I must admit that it would have been nice though to have some connections with Feminine Mystique or to be looking at more of the social science patterns that Desperate Houswives does or does not reflect. Some of the levels of thinking seemed more like essays from an introductary college class than some detailed cultural analysis. However it does give you a spring board for some of the many things that seemed wrapped up in the TV show desperate houswives and could use more depth and detail for making the cases about what is going on with it.
    Also, in the end, I still love the show!!!! If you are a desperate housewives fan learning to think criticially about the show is not a bad idea because it helps us grapple with the question "why are we so engrossed by this show" from a critical light instead of just and adoring perspective on the brillinat show.

    If the intention of "Welcome to Wisteria Lane" was to capitalize on the (now waning) popularity of Desperate Housewives, they could have produced another fact book; full of pictures, biographies, timelines, and really nothing the average regularly-viewing fan didn't already know. How "Welcome to Wisteria Lane" differs from this kind of "quick buck" is that it is comprised of thoughtful essays that go beyond Bree is So Uptight! and GASP, Gabby's Sleeping With Her Gardener.

    The writing techniques of the various contributors vary. Some (mostly near the beginning of the book) relate their own lives to that of the Desperate Houswife they feel most closely resembles them. While the first few essays are admittedly of the standard variety (Go Lynette, the only "real" housewife! and the like), drawing parallels between the lives of the housewives and the lives of the authors is a valid method of exploring and relating to the show. Part of Desperate Housewives appeal lies in the title: there are many housewives, and quite a few of them are desperate. Affairs with gardeners, vehicular homicide and suicides aside, the reason many viewers tune in to Desperate Housewives is to try and catch glimpses of their own lives in that of Susan, Bree, Lynette, and Gabrielle's experiences. An author exploring their own relation to the show is no more self-serving than any viewer who sits in front of their television screen and reacts approvingly or disapprovingly to the housewives' decisions.

    In the middle of the book, the collection begins to pick up steam, with essays exploring sex in the suburban settings of classic television shows in relation to it's use in Desperate Houswives. Another delves into Edie Britt's role as the outsider perspective on Wisteria Lane that the show's narrative tropes and character-building revolves around. Yet another interprets the show as a morality play, with each character representing a traditional vice.

    If a potential buyer is interested in another factbook on Desperate Housewives, or an expose on the backstage secrets of the show, or a simple recap of the plot to date, this is not the book for you. If the potential buyer is interested in a decent collection of scholarly essays exploring topics both directly and indirectly related to the show, "Welcome to Wisteria Lane" is worth the purchase.

      In this engaging reflection on the popular American television comedy-drama show 'Desperate Housewives', the American pastor Shawnthea Monroe offers an entertaining analysis of life in suburbia, as portrayed through the show, from a Christian perspective. Monroe's work is indeed a talented one, capturing and sustaining the attention of the lay Desperate Housewives fanatic, whilst also offering a compelling treatise on the relationship between Desperate Housewives and Christian theology for the serious academic. Hence, this book will appeal to various readers. I used the book alongside my undergraduate theology module in religion and popular culture, for which I based my essay on the religious functions of Desperate Housewives, and it has proved useful. Some chapters indeed have a more serious tone than others. One chapter, for instance, is titled, 'Is Zero Even a Size?' Of course, this is hardly compelling for the desperate academic of religion and popular culture. On the other hand, the last two chapters are indeed enlightening for the scholar in this field, and are the most insightful. Here, Monroe reflects on the portrayal of Christians within the show, and the spiritual significance of Mary Alice Young, before finally considering how the show ought to be viewed and the experiences it can provide for viewers. This is what makes the book so interesting - it is sometimes funny (for the lay reader) and sometimes academic (for the serious scholar.) Laced with relevant Bible quotes, this book will be attractive reading for any open-minded Christian. It certainly helped me with my undergraduate essay and opened up new ways of viewing the show. On the other hand, I thought the academic analysis was a little vague at times and could have been expanded. For instance, during the last chapter, Monroe raises the issue of whether watching Desperate Housewives is a cathartic or mimetic experience, but this is merely glossed over and not written about in any significant depth. Having said that, the fact that Monroe raises the issue is original and thought-provoking. On the whole, this book is well recommended.
