Book Description

When Savannah Lynn Curtis comes into his life, John Tyree knows he is ready to turn over a new leaf. An angry rebel, he had enlisted in the army after high school, not knowing what else to do. Then, during a furlough, he meets the girl of his dreams. Savannah Lynn Curtis is attending college in North Carolina, working for Habitat for Humanity, and totally unprepared for the passionate attraction she feels for John Tyree. The attraction is mutual and quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah vowing to wait for John while he finishes his tour of duty, and John realizing that he's ready to settle down with the young woman who has captured his heart. Neither can foresee that 9/11 is about to change the world and will force John to risk every hope and dream that he's ever had. Like so many proud men and women, John must choose between love and country. And like all those left behind, Savannah must decide to wait or move on. How do we choose wisely? How can we face loss-without giving up on love? Now, when he finally returns to North Carolina, John will discover that loving Savannah will force him to make the hardest decision of his life. An extraordinary, moving story, Dear John explores the complexities of love -- how it survives time and heartbreak, and how it transforms us forever.

4 out of 5 stars DO NOT READ REVIEWS.......2007-10-03

#1 I read reviews to see if people with similar taste in reading liked or disliked a book. I read the reviews of Dear John and realized that about every third review gives away an important plot detail. Kind of like people telling you parts of a movie before you see it. Please don't ruin the experience for others.

#2 Nicholas Sparks is an amazing author. He is the king of romance, however he is not a soldier. He does not know the military, and while I praise him for the dedication of the book, his lack of knowledge is painfully obvious to the 3 military guys who read his books. It isn't that bad, and if you aren't in the Army or haven't been to Iraq, his descriptions are just fine. Above all, the story is incredible. It's a heart wrenching, tear-inducing, smile provoking, unconditional love type romance that he is famous for and does so well. It does leave you wanting a part two. The end is bittersweet and you don't know weather to be happy, sad, or both.

5 out of 5 stars Sparks does it again.......2007-10-01

In this book there is a love like no other. This love goes above and beyond The Notebook. This shows there is a such a thing as unconditional love no matter how unlikely it may be. Not many people at all can be so unselfish. I couldn't put this book down. The story is so well written and the characters kept you involved in the story. There were times you want to scream, laugh and of course i cried at the end. To anyone who is a Sparks fan you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down! .......2007-10-01

I can honestly say this is one of my favorite books (and I don't say that about many). It made me laugh and cry but mostly cry. It makes you think about love and life and the choices me make. I would recommend this book to anyone. It's a beautifully told story!!

5 out of 5 stars Dear John.......2007-09-20

The book was great I could not put it down. Nicholas Sparks did it again, another great love stories.

4 out of 5 stars more the same.......2007-09-16

I title this "more the same", that's exactly what it is. If you've read Nicholas Spark's other novels chances are you found this one as predictable as I. don't get me wrong Sparks is my favorite author. I look forward to each new book he has out. He has a talent for really making charaters come alive. However, unfortunaely for those of uswho do read all his books his writing style is becoming a lttle too transparent. I knew Svannah would end up with Tim from chaper one when they intorduced his character. Still worth reading, especially if you haven't read many of his books yet!

Book Description

Spiritual leader and peace activist John Dear guides readers on the path to finding peace within, and bringing harmony to a world torn by hatred and violence, through following in the footsteps of Jesus.
John Dear’s efforts on behalf of social justice and world peace have won him international admiration and spurred features in the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR’s All Things Considered, USA TODAY, and the National Catholic Reporter. Seen by many to be the spiritual heir to the Berrigan brothers, Dear believes that the key to the spiritual life is not just finding inner peace, but also bringing that peace to bear on the outside world. In his latest work, Dear uses the Gospel account of the Transfiguration, inviting readers to shape their lives along the story of Jesus and to continue his mission of love and peace. These practices have sustained him through his work with the homeless in Washington, D.C., and New York City, as a human-rights advocate in Northern Ireland and Iraq, and on his many missions for peace in war-torn places around the world. Dividing the lifelong pursuit of peace into three distinct parts—an inner journey, a public journey, and the journey of all humanity—he delves into the challenges of learning to love ourselves as we are, diffusing the hatred we feel toward others, and embracing the choice to live in peace.

5 out of 5 stars John Dear's guidelines for following the non-violent Jesus........2007-07-01

In following the non-violent Jesus it is helpful
and also very comforting to connect with those who have been traveling the
path for a long time and know it well. John Dear knows the way and
shares it with us in TRANSFIGURATION. He's been studying Jesus for
years and is convinced that Jesus is totally non-violent but never passive.
And so, John lives his life focused on fitting his life story into that of
Christ's. He invites us to do the same. He's a man of prayer and
contemplation and he publicly stands up for peace and justice and risks
arrest. He knows that Jesus does not bless war and nuclear weapons or
killing anyone for any reason. He knows that Jesus really did command
his followers to put down the sword and that he meant it.
Don't miss the opportunity to read TRANSFIGURATION and to reflect upon
the questions and comments John offers. Following his recommendations for studying Jesus' life, along with daily prayer and meditation, will surely lead to personal transfiguration and contribute to the transfiguration of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart!.......2007-05-03

John Dear's book of Transfiguration is not for those faint of heart.

The chapters lead the reader up the mountain to "eavesdrop" on Jesus' encounter with Moses and Elijah. Like Peter, the reader cannot settle into comfort and ease. One is challenged to surrender to being disturbed by the God who speaks "cloud talk" and

desires us to listen to Jesus. John's words call us all to live a life of nonviolence through commitment to contemplative prayer. The book is interspersed with questions for personal reflection and steps for pondering one's journey on the road to nonviolence.

Encountering this book, you will never be the same if you are an "observer" of life.

John says it well when he writes: "To follow Jesus on the path of transfiguring nonviolence, we have to leave our lofty heights, comfortable safety, and private spiritualities and go with him down the mountain into the world of war, where we must confront the structures of violence head-on. The real discipleship journey beings now, after the Transfiguration, as we follow Jesus on the road to Jerusalem."

5 out of 5 stars Review of John Dear's Transfiguration.......2007-05-03

Transfiguration
Transfiguration is the latest book from the Jesuit peace activist and spiritual leader John Dear. The entire book is a meditation on the story of the Transfiguration. It is a must read for all Christians, especially those involved in working for peace and justice.
Father Dear speaks of moments of transfiguration in our lives, times when we go up the mountain to be affirmed by the Father and come down ready to take up the cross and live the nonviolent Gospel of Jesus. Our lives are a walk with Jesus. Like Jesus, we proclaim nonviolent peace and justice. At times, we are affirmed and consoled by the Father, "You are my beloved son or daughter." The Father tells us to listen to Jesus.
When we listen to Jesus, we hear, "Love your enemies." "Love one another as I have loved you." "Put away your swords." "Pray for those who persecute you." "Feed the hungry. Give drink to the thirsty. Clothe the naked. Shelter the homeless. Care for the sick. Visit the imprisoned. Declare a year of jubilee for debt relief." When we listen to this and try to make it a reality in our lives and in our world, we take up our crosses, go forth from the mountain, and walk with Jesus to Jerusalem.
Father Dear reminds us that we must be prayerful people. We must contemplate the nonviolent teachings of Jesus every day. Contemplation is not the prayer of the Pharisees--words piled upon words. It is resting in the presence of God and listening to what God is telling us. Action without contemplation is futile. I pray daily for a more peaceful heart because I really need one and that is where it all really begins. I cannot make my heart more peaceful. Only Jesus can gift me with a peaceful heart.
He also reminds us that Jesus was nonviolent but not passive. Jesus actively resisted the evil of the empire and the Temple cult that surrounded him and oppressed him and his fellow Jews. He willingly absorbed the evil of crucifixion rather than retaliate in violence. He showed us that the only way to true peace and justice is by the suffering of the cross. We take up our crosses when we enter into the suffering of the poor and oppressed, the victims of all the structural violence in our world.
One of the main points I got from my first reading of the book (I will ponder this book many times!) is that we must let go of fear as we come down from the moments of transfiguration to work for peace and justice. In 2005, Father Dear personally taught me to let go of fear and cross the line at the Nevada Test Site to protest nuclear proliferation on the sixtieth anniversary of Hiroshima. I will never forget the moment when I walked into the barb wire holding area. Father Dear immediately came up to me and asked me, "Are you doing all right?" He is a powerful activist and a very sensitive, compassionate man. More recently, while I was reading the book, I let go of fear and signed up for a study mission to Israel and Palestine which now has been postponed. But, I will go. In the meantime, I am going to Ireland and to Northern Ireland this summer in order to study peacemaking there.
I also learned from the book that life is a series of transfigurations. That is what energizes us for our work. Each transfiguration brings us to a deeper awareness of the nonviolent Jesus. I am retired now and my wife and I spend a lot of our time working for peace and justice.
I fondly recall the moments of transfiguration in my life where the Father encouraged me to follow his nonviolent Son--a retreat at Agnes Scott College with Father Emmanuel Charles McCarthy over twenty years ago, a retreat with Father John Dear at Kirkridge Retreat Center, and a retreat with Father Daniel Berrigan and Elizabeth McAllister also at Kirkridge. These gentle giants proclaim the nonviolence of Jesus to a world and a country that wants to have nothing to do with what they are proclaiming. However, they have taught me that being faithful to nonviolence is what it is all about. We live with hope beyond hope that Jesus will transform us and our world into the New Heaven and New Earth as promised.
I encourage you to read and reread the book. The Questions for Reflection that are scattered throughout the book give readers ample opportunity to contemplate the truth of Jesus' nonviolence and apply it to their own lives.
As Christians, our "weapons" are the towel and the bowl. We are to wash one another's feet. We are to serve not be served. We are to love one another as Jesus has loved us. We are to love our enemies and pray for our persecutors.
J. Patrick Mahon, Ph.D.

John Dear does not just write a book-he lives what he writes Has the gift of urging us to do the same. He hits the mark for me. Contemplation in action, a burning desire to live the life of one who is Peace. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars John Read is a Great Spiritual Writer.......2007-04-02

When you read John Read, you are reminded of the "madness" of Saint Francis of Assisi and all those powerless holy men and women who believe that Jesus always sides with the poor, the marginalized, the outcast, the "wrong" people. Unlike many arrogant and self-righteous "Christians" of our times who claim they know that Jesus supports war and the persecution of "immoral" people, John Dear insists that Jesus' love is all-inclusive and peaceful. Against the many Christian "prophets" who in their own TV programs support those powerful politicians who are pro-war and pro-capital punishment, John Dear reminds us that to follow Jesus means to question the numerous forms of violence that dominate our times. Dear's "insanity" is like opening a window and smell some fresh air. I highly recommend that you read this and all the other books written by John Dear.

5 out of 5 stars EVER MORE ESSENTIAL READING FOR TRUE AND FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS OF JESUS CHRIST.......2006-10-22

The Rev. Father John Dear as always clearly and concisely presents with great courage the essential message of Jesus Christ and His mission to liberate the captive, comfort and free the oppressed, bring sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf and to declare a year of Jubilee (as Father Dear quotes Jesus quoting Isaiah early on).

The importance of this book for prayerful reading by EVERY Christian grows each year as our various elf-proclaimed Christian Churches appear to lose our way in Christ. Read especially around page twenty of how we service the objectives of the current Empire rather than our one true Lord. Not all who cry Lord Lord will get into the Kingdom.

Courageously and clearly, the Rev. Father Dear wrote these words last millenium which grow more relevant each year. Please read them very carefully and prayerfully. Read as well his other volumes, which truly open to us the true meaning of Christ's eternal mission today, and which are available here on amazon very inexpensively. I truly hope some of that goes to support the good work and essential writing of Father Dear.

5 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Book.......2001-07-04

I was amazed at this book, and the impact it has had on my life, and choices I have orignally made. This book tells of the Gospel of Jesus and relates it to everyday modern life, and choices we must all make. I never really understood the messages behind the gospels I read this book. This book relates the Christian message behind the death penalty, civil disobediance, belief in faith, and your sprititual journey in life. The book is well written and easy to understand. Each chapter starts out with a chapter in one of the Gospels and then relates it to modern day life. I will be forever changed by the reading of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Jesus the Rebel.......2000-07-10

If you want to be comfortable and continue to feel all warm and fuzzy with your Christian faith, don't read this book! John Dears read on the Christian message hits home hard and in a big way. It challenged me on many levels, as material consumer, as peace maker, as one person challenging the system, whether it be political or religious. It clearly outlined the mission, as a call to work for justice at every point in our life. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is searching for the deeper meaning of the Christian message. Mary Routh Ankeny, Ia joyfam@dwx.com

Book Description

This illuminating examination of the Gospels reveals how the questions Jesus asks of his followers lead the way to a deeper understanding of the meaning of life and the mystery of God.

The Gospels are filled with stories, parables, miracles, commandments, and dramatic incidents that trace Jesus’ life and recount his teachings. A close reading of the Gospels reveals, however, that they are also filled with questions. As John Dear points out in this remarkable book, Jesus, like any great teacher and rabbi, “has a question for everyone he meets, for every occasion, for every experience, for every potential disciple.” Dear uses these questions as a starting point, an invitation to readers to discover the lessons they contain by searching their own hearts and minds for answers.

Throughout The Questions of Jesus, Dear interweaves insights from ethical and religious teachers ranging from Buddha to Gandhi to Martin Luther King, Jr. Using recent events as powerful and poignant examples, he shows why a renewed commitment to Jesus’ message of nonviolence, compassion, justice, and peace is essential to healing a world torn by violence and war.

1 out of 5 stars Challenging Christology.......2006-11-12

Readers should be aware that the Christology espoused by John Dear is profoundly out of synch with orthodox Catholic teaching. His depiction of Christ is essentially that of a secular messiah who, like Dear, urges followers to "disturb the peace with trouble-making nonviolence."

Politics are never far behind Dear's "questions of Jesus." Here is how he celebrated Christmas 2006 in the pages of the National Catholic Reporter:

"This week, tens of millions of Christians across the country will celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace. Right along with them, Bush and Cheney, and their legions of hawks and warriors, will attend church and make merry around the table. But the very next day they'll resume Herod's imperial project -- the ongoing massacre of the innocents. The U.S. wages war in Iraq, Afghanistan, Colombia and elsewhere. It crushes the hungry and homeless, the imprisoned and the refugee, and maintains upon their feeble backs the world's ultimate terrorist threat -- a huge nuclear arsenal."

If challenging oneself with the spiritual message of Christ is the goal, I suggest readers start with the Vintage Spiritual Classics series, especially their version of St. Francis DeSales's "Introduction to the Devout Life," or even a simple life of Christ by either Frank Sheed or Fulton Sheen. All are available via Amazon.

and you will find every question Jesus asked, and some He even answered.

For like ourselves in every way, Our Lord Jesus Christ did all He could to avoid ansering any questions, including those designed to trip him up at his trial.

Let us ask Jesus with the rich young man: Good Teacher, what must I do to have eternal life? Let us ask in this time of unjust war: Who is my neighbor? And let us answer the questions Jesus asks of us: Who do you say that I am? (asked of Peter) Why do you look for me? (asked of Mary and Joseph in Jerusalem) and the similar Why have you come? (asked of Judas in the Garden, responded with a kiss)

The Reverend Father John Dear is a well-respected and authoritative member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) as well as past president of the Catholic Organization PAX CHRISTI as well as the International Fellowship of Reconciliation. He is a member of the great Jesuit community which includes the Reverend Father Daniel Berrigan, whose several commentaries on the Old Testament prophets make excellent fuel for contemplation of Catholic theology, especially his thick book on Job, and on Ezekial and especially the ever-necessary Jeremiah. In brief, the Father John Dear is a very orthodox and respected and admired Catholic writer on matters theological in the most important and relevant vein. Even under Ratzinger his views and writings have never been called on any carpet.

Father Dear was breakfasting with his parents the morning of 9/11/01. Upon the news of that morning his parents left town as he ran to the Red Cross to volunteer bravely, putting his beliefs and words and Faith into action, consoling the sick and afflicted selflessly and bravely. Father Dear at personal risk was placed in charge of 500 chaplains, and he personally comforted and prayed with and ministered to thousands of victims, their families and support emergency workers, firemen, etc. I sincerely believe the Reverend Father John Dear deserves our full respect as a man, and as a very Catholic theologian whom our Church cherishes and whom God loves. This being said let us return to our text at hand:

Early in the text, as you can see through amazon's generous Search Inside service, Father Dear declares his belief in the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This belief has always been a cornerstone of Catholicism. This belief denies the opposing idea that Jesus was a mere "secular Messiah" or political figureheadsuch as Judas sought, which Father Dear's strongly expressed and truly felt Catholic Faith denies on each page, as Dear declares his belief in the eternal and Divine Love and Peace, and resurrection, of Our Lord.

This present large volume comprehensively opens for us today the fullness of Jesus Christ's Gospel message of peace, compassion, self-sacrifice and resurrection. We find fully explored each question from His earliest ministry ("Who are my mother and brothers . . .?") to Calvary and beyond, and how we must now receive and answer in our own hearts these same questions in order to follow Jesus the Lord upon the path to peace and compassion in service to God and one another, especially the poor, the afflicted, the oppressed and those unarmed who suffer the present scourge of imperial war.

Hear these questions. Contemplate deeply these questions. Reflect with John Dear these same questions which were put to our Lord.

Once again as for a half century past at least we must thank God for speaking to us through the good work of Image Books, which always with intelligence and grace offers us so profound nourishment for prayer, spiritual growth, and service.

Please notice especially that great Catholic Martin Sheen's endorsement of this prayer book.

There is much to learn here. There is rich soil to grow with here.

You will love the Rev. Father Dear's clear and concise and courageous writing style and content. I strongly recommend you study further his several volumes, in particular his Jesus the Rebel, especially around the twentieth page, which has much to say regarding our complex Church today, some six years after he so propheticallly wrote it. See also in this Advent time his commentary on Mary, Prophet of Peace, etc.

5 out of 5 stars OUR MOST CATHOLIC AND BLESSED PEACEMAKER THE REV FATHER JOHN DEAR PRESENTS GANDHI.......2006-11-14

We are very fortunate to have available this compilation of Gandhi's word collected by the Jsuit Father John Dear in this excellent publication by the longstanding and highly qualified Catholic Publishing House Orbis Books, an organ of the MAryknoll MIssionary Society, for whom my uncle served as priest overseas forty yaers until a debilitating stroke struck him down five years ago.

Father JOhn DEar is best known for not only his actions for peace, including as the head of Pax Christi and the Fellowship of REconciliation, but also for the many works he has written, including Disarming the Heart: Towards a Vow Of Non-Violence (which for a Christian shoudl be redundant anyways!). In this ADvent season we do well to contemplate his Mary of Nazareth: Prophet of Peace. And in the midst of all this activity he found time to compile the writings of Gandhi, in the year 2002 when surely he felt the call to more direct actions.

What more lasting and direct action for peace and Christian love could he possibly take than this collection of Gandhi? Now at this discount how can we afford in this fallen day and age not to take it to heart?

Please take advantage of the excellent amazon Search Inside feature to study at least the Table of Contents and you will find everything you have wanted to know. Not only does he provide an excellent summary of the life and impact of Gandhi, but then develops along the essential themes his thought and prayer. There is of course and obviously to many the parallels with the Sermon on the Mount which helps us CAtholics the more to understand our call as Catholics to peaceful action in this violent world.

Especially important to us as Americans as our nation sinks under its exponentially increasing inequities brought on by the current administration is the pages devoted to "Steadfast Resistance", in particular the chapter entitled, "Obeying the Divine Law, Resisting Unjust Laws (pages 152 ff.)" which find echo sixty years later in the COnciliar document Gaudium et Spes, which describes why no Catholic can support our Iraqi involvement directly nor indirectly:

Gaudium et spes gives the specific admonition:

"Every act of war directed to the indiscriminate destruction of whole cities or vast areas with their inhabitants is a crime against God and humanity, which merits firm and unequivocal condemnation."

Thus must we Catholics condemn absolutely our war against Iraq which goes back though the long war of attrition to papa Bush in 1990, which has caused over a million Iraqi deaths, women and children in their bloodied beds, and carpet bombing wiping out the ancient city of Fallujah, etc. all for profiteering privateering petroleum piracy.

Further Gaudium et spes states unequivocally:
"If civil authorities legislate or allow anything that is contrary to the will of God, neither the law made nor the authorization granted can be binding on the conscience of the citizens since God has more right to be obeyed than man."

God commands: Thou shalt not kill.

We cannot kill a million Iraqi citizens, women and children in their beds, for the sake of privateering petroleum piracy. We cannot be involved in this genocide in any way shape or form. We in fact are obligated to work and speak strongly against it. Pope John PAul II was first in condemning the aggressive invasion of Iraq.

I cannot urge you enough to consider this substantial volume for your spiritual and Catholic library, as the Reverend Father John Dear so well and intelligently and spiritually interprets for us directly from the primary sources the life and philosophy, the love and non-violent action of this Great Soul. I can think of no finer book on Gandhi available today. I can think of no more crucial message for us today, who have grown deaf and blind by the brilliance of the Sermon on the Mount and need to see it through refractions from a similar source to find our own Faith and grace-filled Action.

Do unto others what you want them to do to you.
Sounds like something you never have to think about while it is all you need to think about.

Book Description

Eccentric, coldly rational, brilliant, doughty, exacting, lazy—in full bohemian color the world’s most famous literary detective and his loyal companion Dr. John Watson investigate a series of previously unrecorded cases in this new collection of original tales. In the Scottish Highlands and Afghanistan, in the cases of a dying doctor and a mooning sentry, of a black basalt bird and white chalk horse, popular contemporary mystery writers—among them Sharyn McCrumb, Carolyn Wheat, Anne Perry and Malachi Saxon, Jon L. Breen, Bill Crider, Colin Bruce—craftily celebrate the mind, methods, and manners of the peerless Sherlock Holmes. In addition, with one foot in the Victorian age and the other in the computer age, Christopher Redmond illuminates the vast possibilities that new technology offers Sherlockians in “Sherlock Holmes on the Internet,” while in “A Sherlockian Library” editors Jon Lellenberg and Daniel Stashower provide a new list of fifty essential titles on Arthur Conan Doyle and the Holmes canon. Finally, an essay by mystery novelist Philip A. Shreffler explores one of English literature’s most famous friendships in “Holmes and Watson, the Head and the Heart.”

4 out of 5 stars Engrossing tales.......2007-03-24

"Murder, My Dear Watson" is one of the annual anthologies published by Carrol & Graf in their `New Tales of Sherlock Holmes' series. Most of these anthologies contain a few attractive stories with mediocre to bad stuff being presented generously. Fortunately, this particular collection scores significant points in terms of stories that involve Holmes' (albeit apocryphal) singular tales with certain `matters of interest'. Now for a very brief description of these tales:
1. "The Adventure of the Dying Doctor" by Colin Bruce is a very humane story where Watson (surprise!) is the main character, with a cameo by James Moriarty and Mycroft Holmes.
2. "The Adventure of the Young British Soldier" by Bill Crider is another story where Watson and his erstwhile orderly Murray take centre-stage. Of course Holmes is there, sharp as ever, poetic as well.
3. "The Vale of the White Horse" by Sharyn McCrumb is a complex tale with hints of bizarre hereditary traits and the consequences. It was a brilliant story with depths that are rarely aimed at.
4. "The Adventure of the Mooning Sentry" by Jon L. Breen is a mediocre story about one of Holmes' post-retirement `missions'.
5. "The Adventure of the Rara Avis" by Carolyn Wheat is a rather sensationalistic attempt to develop the tantalizing hints left by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle regarding the affair of the Addleton-Barrow' into a story about the Maltese Falcon.
6. "The Adventure of the Agitated Actress" by Daniel Stashower is a brilliant story about white might have happened on the stage before William Gillette's play "Sherlock Holmes" opened in London.
7. "The Case of the Highland Hoax" by Anne Perry and Malachi Saxon is an improbable, wild and poor story set in the Scottish Highlands.
8. ""The Case of the Golden Monkeys" by Loren D. Estleman is an almost Wold-Newton story involving Sax Rohmer and his Fu-Manchu model.
9. "The Adventure of the Curious Canary" by Barry Day is a good retelling of "The Speckled Band".
10. "Before the Adventures" by Lenore Carroll is a brilliant story about what could have happened to Watson before the entry of Holmes in his life.
The non-fiction writings included in this book contain a plethora of information about the world of Sherlock Holmes and how a Sherlockian may enrich his knowledge in these matters. Overall, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Plums.......2004-11-24

Within the past three months I've read a dozen collections of Holmes pastiches, and found this to be the best. It includes several quotable "plums." Such plums were one of the key features of the original Holmes stories; they'd be a raisinless rice pudding without them. Here are a few:

P. 13: The best way to tell a lie effectively is to tell the truth badly.

P. 18: The moral, Watson, is that while life contains its hazards, it is the man who does not know how to calculate the risks who is in real danger.

P. 67: An amateur. Which means he is either a genius or a dilettante. There is no in-between in such cases.

P. 69: Swamp gas can only explain so much, sir, so much and no more.

P. 154-55: I saw the small twitch of irony catch the corner of his mouth. The next moment the face had regained its classically sculpted lines, something poised between Roman senator and an American Indian.

P. 161: He acted as though he expected to have the fatted calf killed daily on his behalf.

2 out of 5 stars Slim pickings again.......2002-11-25

I went ahead and invested in this follow-up to last year's "Murder in Baker Street", hoping that the stories would be better. Well, they weren't. The tales are just flat and unexciting. What happened to the good stories some of these authors used to contribute to previous anthologies? Out of this batch, maybe two are worth reading. Other than that, I would recommend saving $$ and renting it from the library.

    Book Description

Many biographies of John D. Rockefeller and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. have been compiled- some have used bits of the original correspondence presented here and tried to show opposing interests between John D. Rockefeller and his son. Still others were written without correspondence at all. This collection of never-before-published letters traces the history of the transfer of the Rockefeller fortune over the course of fifty years. It illustrates how the endowment was bestowed from Senior to Junior with respect, sound advice, and with a mutual trust between father and son. The letters also reveal far more than the business side of entrusting the Rockefeller fortune to the younger generation. The misives are filled with news of family matters and personal wishes constituting a record of the Rockefeller family values which, in turn, sponsored the philantrophies of Junior. Outlined in these letters is the conception for the Rockefeller Foundation, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, and the General Education Board. Later would follow the realization of the Fort Tryon Park, the Rockefeller Center, Riverside Church, and the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. Junior's holdings peaked in 1928 at 5 million and his dedication to public parks, and institutions around the world absorbed a considerable portion of his wealth. Ernst's introduction reflects on five themes which run continuously throughout the letters: the respect and love among the members of the family, a father's precautions to his maturing son, the son's willingness to accept his father's precepts and examples, the son's conscious assumption of the responsibilities of the bequeathed fortune, and overriding faith in a benevolent God. These themes continually come together to form the outline of a philosophy of life behind the Rockefeller legacy, as when Senior writes: "I am indeed blessed beyond measure in having a son whom I can trust to do this most particular and most important work. Go carefully. Be conservative. Be sure you are right- and then do not be afraid to give out, as your heart prompts you, and as the Lord inspires you."

5 out of 5 stars From a dear young friend..........2006-04-16

I went on a retreat and was given this book at the end. Over the past few months and months I have read this book and gone through it. John Paul II was my hero and therefore this book especially struck with me.

Each week there is a quotation from both Pope John Paul II and the bible. Then there is a small reflection which reads like he is actually talking to you. Then, following the reflection is a prayer, and a suggestion on how to live out the faith in the comming week.

This book has really helped to change my perspectives on certain things. It is very uplifting and inspires young people, such as myself, to live the words JPII spoke when he said 'be not afraid'.

Every phrase of Henri Nouwen's life expressed his conviction that intimacy with Christ requires active involvement with powerless people in the world. This conviction is the organizing theme of The Road to Peace, edited by John Dear, which contains dozens of essays, interviews, and occasional writings. His reflections on the March on Selma in 1965, the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr., the legacy of Oscar Romero, and his work with handicapped people at the L'Arche communities are especially affecting. Because this book so thoroughly integrates Nouwen's spiritual beliefs and social concerns, The Road to Peace may be the best one-volume introduction to his work available. --Michael Joseph Gross

4 out of 5 stars Revealing new dimensions of Henri Nouwen.......1998-04-15

In 1989, Jesuit activist John Dear was demonstrating in Washington with a group of homeless people when he was arrested. While waiting in jail he discovered that he had a slim volume by Henri Nouwen, recently given to him by a Trappist monk friend, in his coat pocket. Dear began reading it and was hooked. He subsequently wrote to Nouwen and so began a correspondence of faith and friendship that lasted until Nouwen's death in 1996.

In `The Road to Peace', Dear presents an under-appreciated aspect of Henri Nouwen, the dimension of social responsibility that Dear sees as underpinning all of his writings, and was a significant part of his life. Dear's collection gathers for the first time nearly all of Nouwen's writings on peace, social justice, and disarmament.

We learn enough about Dear in his 25-page introduction to know that he himself is a deeply committed and experienced social activist. (Following an anti-nuclear Ploughshare demonstration, for instance, he spent eight months in a US jail, and a further five months under house arrest.) So when Dear says that social justice is a key dimension of Nouwen's spirituality and that he is an inspiring and challenging writer for social activists, he believe him.

A key part of Dear's introduction is a well-composed account of Nouwen's life, which also reveals the extent to which social concerns were a part of his life as well as his thought. To give one example, following an impromptu visit to Nicaragua, Nouwen undertook a six-week tour of the US denouncing the nation's involvement in the contra-war, which culminated in a bomb threat against the writer.

Nouwen's writings challenge his readers to recognize that solidarity with, and action on behalf of, our wounded world is an essential part of spirituality, while activists are challenged to deepen their inner contemplative life, without which they are vulnerable to despair.

`The Road to Peace' includes a number of previously unpublished texts, most notably a 50-page `Spirituality of Peacemaking', a! s well as a talk on AIDS, interviews with the writer, his reflections on the legacies of Thomas Merton and Oscar Romero, and writings on his life with handicapped persons at L'Arche.

`The Road to Peace' is a substantial, significant and original addition to the Nouwen corpus that will be widely welcomed. [Book of the Month Selection, John Garratt Catholic Book Club.]
