Book Description

Maddog Inc. was a loose confederation of Texas writers and "picker poets," as Jay Milner calls them, whose heydey lasted from the late 1950s to about the mid-'70s. This self-conscious gaggle of merrymakers (the group even had an official Maddog membership card) frequently got together to party through the nights and days.

The merry pranksters he fell in with included the likes of Billy Lee Brammer, Bud Shrake, Gary Cartwright, Dan Jenkins, Larry L. King, Pete Gent and (to an extent, though only peripherally, it appears) Larry McMurtry. The singers and songwriters were Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Billy Joe Shaver and others.

I highly recommend Confessions of a Maddog, especially for those such as myself who are a bit younger than the author's generation of Texas writers but have heard tell of their legendary exploits. The Dallas Morning News, Tom Pilkington, January 3, 1999.

In the 1960's and '70s, a number of Texas writers began emerging as significant comers on the literary landscape. They were, for the most part, a rambunctious and talented lot who worked hard and played harder, and before they got too old to socialize till sunrise--among them, Larry L. King, Dan Jenkins, Bud Shrake, Gary Cartwright and Billie Lee Brammer--they left an indelible imprint on the world of letters in Texas and beyond. They and some of their friends called themselves Maddog Inc.--a label that, given the culture of the times, seemed entirely fitting to their unequivocal disregard for restraint.

Fort Worth resident, Jay Milner, a native of West Texas, was one of the Maddogs. A former reporter and writer for the esteemed New York Herald Tribune, he published a well-regarded novel, Incident at Ashton, before returning to Texas in 1961 to teach journalism, including duty at TCU and SMU. In Milner's new book, Confessions of a Maddog, published by the University of North Texas Press, Milner recounts the lives, loves and losses of his good friends and fellow writers. From Editor's Note preceding four page excerpt in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, November 15, 1998.

A writer is someone who puts his thoughts into words. Jay Milner has a way of putting everyone's thoughts into words. He knows where he is, therefore, he is able to position everything around him in relation to himself, which seems to be a good spot. His insight into the mental stumblings of an entertainer are uncanny. Maybe it's because he is also an entertainer. In other words and on the other hand and in addition to it all, out of a possible ten, Jay Milner is a twelve.--Willie Nelson

"When I first met Jay Milner, dinosaurs and the one-and-only original Hank Williams were a long time dead; John F. Kennedy and William Faulkner only recently so. Lyndon Johnson, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, Jackie Gleason, Red Foley, Chet Huntley and a rowdy bunch of hard-drinking, pot-smoking, lady-chasing Texas writers--many of whom make appearances in this book--were alive and semi-well. So were our dreams--collectively and individually--of soon running Norman Mailer out of town, embarrassing Kurt Vonnegut into retirement and reducing Saul Bellow to full-time school teaching. It didn't exactly happen that way, but my-oh-my didn't we have a good time trying?" Larry L. King.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Thoughtful, and Historical.......2001-04-01

I had a fun time reading this book by Jay Milner. It's a really great chronicle of the exploits of a renegade group of Texas writers, musicians, artists, and politicos, as well a chronicle of Milner's own life as a novelist, university professor, and journalist.

Much of the fun in this book takes place in the mid 60s through mid 70s Texas, when Milner's running buddies include folks such as writers Gary Cartwright, Billie Lee Brammer, Larry L. King, and Edwin Shrake, former Texas Governor Ann Richards, Dallas Cowboy wide receiver turned novelist Peter Gent, and country music legends Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Kris Kristofferson.

Since this book is also autobiographical, it would be easy for Milner to embellish the high points of his life, and choose the frames from his internal "home movie" that would be in the book. Yet Milner does no such thing. He describes his life, and the activities surrounding it, with the objectivity of a trained "old school" journalist--either in the middle of a 60s or 70s scene involving sex, drugs, and country rock and roll--or in his honest and thoughtful analysis of what he considered his own inner demons.

Jay Milner's book is more than just a fun read. It is also a reliable history of a modern, creative period when artistic endeavors coming out of Texas began to be taken seriously by the rest of the world.

"Confessions of a Maddog" is an important work in this regard. I predict that it will be required reading in any college course involving the literature of the southwest for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A heady trot thru the era of great fun loving Texans.......1998-12-14

Milner has exceeded himself with this book. His compassionate record of the exploits and traumas of several of his friends as they hone their writing skills is superb. I refer you to page 222 for the most touching prose regarding one's journey up to and into the abyss of the dark night of one's soul. Billy Lee chose to go into the abyss and stay. Obviously Milner chose to take theever so rickety ladder out. His book is testimony to that choice.

My 9 year old daughter loves this series of books. We got this one through the Scholastic book club at school and she has quickly read through 4 other My Secret Unicorn books. I would recommend reading them in order though as they make more sense that way. The text is in bigger print and the chapters are a good size for kids her age. All in all, we have enjoyed these books and highly recommend them!!

3 out of 5 stars This Book is No Longer Operative.......2007-09-26

Since "Flying High" was published a lot of things at JetBlue have come unstrung, including David Neeleman's hold on the CEO job. The airline's disastrous meltdown at JFK during bad weather in February 2007 demonstrated that its media image wasn't matched by operational prowess -- and proved the validity of a timeless adage in the business world: the qualities needed to conceive and launch a business, which Neeleman has in spades, are not the qualities needed to stabilize and grow a business.

Today JetBlue is retrenching, cautious, slow-growth mode, parking airplanes and struggling to recover from the black eyes it endured in 2007... and Neeleman has been revealed as something less than the Superman this book portrays him as.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-01-09

This is a fascinating and encouraging story.

It's encouraging because it seemed that the odds would have been agains Neeleman in becoming a successful CEO...but his persistence, energy, and creativity (as thoroughly described in the book) allow him to prevail. The most important take-away I got out of the book was the importance of recognizing and admitting your weaknesses - and then acting accordingly by surrounding yourself with talented people to fill those gaps.

For managers looking to get some refreshing ideas, this is a worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-10-25

James Wynbrandt has penned a well-researched, colorful account of the life and guiding principles of commercial aviation pioneer David Neeleman. The book is written in a clear, straightforward style, and offers insights into what made discount carrier JetBlue an unlikely success. The book appears, however, to reflect Neeleman's artful capacity for generating positive publicity for himself. While this is not exactly a hagiography, once you have read it, you may well envision a halo floating above Neeleman's portrait on the book's jacket. Then again, as Muhammad Ali once said, "If you can do it, it ain't braggin'." Certainly, Neeleman's accomplishments rocked the commercial aviation industry, encouraging the major carriers to launch value-based alternatives such as Ted and Song. We recommend this book to professionals seeking useful ideas to help their businesses gain altitude.

5 out of 5 stars Attitude Is Altitude.......2004-08-27

This really isn't a biography of David Neeleman (pronounced "Neel-Mun"). Rather, Wyndbrant carefully integrates relevant information from both Neeleman's life and his career to explain JetBlue's success to date. Neeleman would be the first to point out that, in the airline industry (de-regulated since October 28, 1978), it is a fool's errand to predict which airlines today are totally secure and which are doomed. All airlines have problems which vary only in nature and degree. However, JetBlue is probably in better shape than most others are even as Neeleman explains that how it can become better while becoming larger "is the question that we're wrestling with at JetBlue, and I think it's something that we focus on a lot." He adds, "I believe we are going to be able to...have a thriving, prosperous company, that we're setting the standard in what we're doing in customer service, and that we'll continue to grow in the future."

Of special interest to me is what Wyndbrant reveals about the major influences on Neeleman's life and career, notably his membership in the Church of Latter Day Saints, his career successes (e.g. leadership of WestJet and then Morris Air) as well as career failures (e.g. bankruptcy and liquidation of The Hawaii Express and being fired by Southwest Airlines), the impact of having A.D.D., and his efforts to plan, obtain financing for, and then launch JetBlue.

With regard to JetBlue's business model, it clearly indicates what Neeleman learned during his associations with the three airlines (WestJet, Morris, and Southwest Airlines). According to Wyndbrant, as JetBlue was about to be launched at John F. Kennedy International Airport in February of 2000,

"Neeleman promised New Yorkers -- and the world -- a new kind of economy travel aboard planes with wider, all-leather seats, extra leg room, preassigned seats, and more overhead storage space than other carriers delivered. Moreover, all of this would be provided at a price that was up to 65 percent less than the competition. Furthermore, there would be no requirement for staying at destinations over a Saturday night to qualify for the lowest fare, as the major carriers mandated. Even the price of walk-up tickets would be below standard fares many airlines charged for flights of a similar distance. On the ground, JetBlue would offer quick, computerized, touch-screen check-in. Perhaps most notable of all, in the air, passengers would be able to watch 24 channels of live TV displayed on individual monitors mounted in every seatback. JetBlue would be the first airline in the world to make this entertainment amenity available to all its passengers."

This is almost precisely the same business model which enabled JetBlue to attract its senior management team as well as to obtain about $130-million in initial financing. It also explains how JetBlue was able to differentiate itself from various competitors. With all due respect to JetBlue's business plan, leadership, and capital, however, Neeleman insists that JetBlue's crewmembers (NOT "employees" nor even "associates") have established -- and will continue to sustain -- the airline's single most decisive competitive advantage. On this point, he and Southwest Airlines' Herb Kelleher are in total agreement as I shall explain in greater detail later. Wyndbrant devotes substantial attention in this book to how JetBlue recruits, interviews, and evaluates prospective crewmembers. He then explains how they are trained.

There is so much of value in this book which is directly relevant to decision-makers in almost any other organization, regardless of size or nature. Obviously, Neeleman is an uncommonly intelligent, ambitious, talented, principled, and caring CEO. However, the success achieved by JetBlue thus far is the result of teamwork under his leadership. For me, the key point in this book is illustrated by what is certainly not unique to JetBlue: the process by which a visionary can attract and then galvanize so many different but compatible people with comparable skills, decency, and experience to help launch what became a crusade, in this instance (in Neeleman's words) "to bring humanity back to air travel."

Wyndbrant focuses on so many revealing, indeed defining moments in his book. I now conclude this brief commentary with one of them. Kelleher once told Neeleman, "I don't care about my shareholders." Neeleman was shocked. What did he mean? Was Kelleher really serious? "Because I just take care of my employees. I know if I take care of my employees, they'll take care of my customers, and my customers will take care of my shareholders." Long before Neeleman went to work for Southwest Airlines, Kelleher once observed "You can get the same airplane. You can get the same ticket counters.  You can get the same computers. But the hardest thing for a competitor to match is your culture and the spirit of your people and their focus on customer service because that isn't something you can do overnight and it isn't something you can do without a great deal of attention every day in a thousand different ways. That is why I say that our employees are our competitive protection."

What lies ahead for these two uncommonly successful airlines? Since my crystal ball imploded more than 20 years ago, I stopped making predictions. Let's await further developments...and probably not have to wait long.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look into one of the most admired companies.......2004-08-25

This fast moving, well written book provides a detailed insight into the success of JetBlue and its famed CEO. More than just the operating details of the airline, this book explores its very foundation in the life and personality of JetBlue's CEO. You come away from it thinking of all the ways you can improve your own business, and with a strong appreciation of your customers. Flying High is well written and holds your attention from start to finish. This is definitely a must read.

This is a huge, gorgeous book, and a must-have for anyone interested in WWII aircraft. Although the featured pictures were all taken air-to-air, the images of the aircraft are so perfect and so detailed that there is a feeling of unreality about them... I found that I kept looking for the wires that were holding the airplanes up, just because the images are so perfect that it is almost inconceivable that they were taken while the planes were actually flying. Simply stunning... every page takes your breath away.

I just bought this book from our local natural history museum. It has some of the most incredible photographs I have ever seen (all in blazing color and all taken from the air). The book is divided into sections (e.g., mountains, forests, realms of water, deserts, cities, archaic sites like Stonehenge and Petra). There are some essays as well, but I have not read them yet. I'm still trying to take in all the photographs, and there are A LOT. This book is well worth having, just to show us what a wonderful world we really live in.

I bought this as a gift and had a hard time putting it down when I looked at it! Love it...very thick book with such captivating photography that you get lost in it. This is a GREAT gift for a male or female, young or old, for someone who travels by air a lot or for someone who doesn't. It's just great!

5 out of 5 stars Looking down on America.......2005-02-09

I first came across Jim Wark's work in 'A field guide to sprawl' by Dolores Hayden (ISBN 0393731251) where fifty-one of his aerial photos were used to decode the American man-made landscape. This latest work is a glorious celebration of the Nation, man-made and natural, in a thick chunky book and for the price this has to be a bargain.

The nine chapters cover it all, cities, rock formations, rivers, mountains, deserts (hot and cold) farming, coastlines, the land in color and finally, admittedly an unusual choice, mining. This last chapter though provides some amazing color images, it's hard to believe the abstract looking color of the potash evaporation ponds near Moab, Utah or the red of the water created by iron ore in Marquette County, Michigan. I particularly liked the sixty-nines pages devoted to agriculture, plenty of examples of contour farming (more abstract art shapes) and those amazing circular fields that use pivot watering systems, you just can't appreciate these when seen at ground level. Twenty-two cities are covered over 140 pages and even here there is something fresh to see, for instance, an amazing shot of the Chrysler Building (actually worthy of a poster) or the Westin in Atlanta.

If I have a criticism it is that many of the photos could have been bigger. This occurs on many spreads where there is a whole page photo and on the opposite page the captions and a single photo surrounded by just too much white or black space. Apart from that I think this a stunning book of over five hundred aerial photographs by Jim Wark, he clearly has an eye for the floor of the sky.

This photos in this book are a thing of beauty. Jim Wark, who flies an Aviat/Christen Husky and took all his photos from it solo, is a gifted pilot and photographer. As a Husky pilot myself, I have many opportunities to enjoy America from the front seat of this great airplane but I don't have the eye to see the things he does.

The only two wishes I had for the book was that the photos were larger and the binding more sturdy. Neither detracts from the wonderful quality of the photos.

I bought a number of these books to give as Christmas gifts to my aircraft customers and look forward spending more time with it myself over the Christmas holidays.

Book Description

The second in the classic Phryne Fisher series from Kerry Greenwood, featuring the irresistible heroine Phryne. Whether she's foiling kidnappers, seducing beautiful young men or simply deciding what to wear for dinner, Phryne handles everything with her inimitable panache and flair.

Danger, excitement and love--this is how the glamorous Phryne Fisher is determined to live her life in her second enticing adventure.

Walking the wings of a Tiger Moth plane in full flight ought to be enough excitement for most people, but not Phryne Fisher, amateur detective, woman of mystery, as delectable as the finest chocolate and as sharp as razor blades.

In this, the second Phryne Fisher mystery, the 1920s' most talented and glamorous detective flies even higher, handling a murder, a kidnapping and the usual array of beautiful young men with style and consummate ease--and all before it's time to adjourn to the Queenscliff Hotel for breakfast. Whether she's flying planes, clearing a friend of homicide charges or saving a child from kidnapping, she handles everything with the same dash and elan with which she drives her red Hispano-Suiza.

5 out of 5 stars Wing walking.......2007-08-28

The second book in the series takes place only a few months after "Cocaine blues" ends and with it returns its bright and luminous Phryne Fisher. Many of the secondary (if you can call them that) characters return which adds a nice touch. I liked this book even more than the previous one. Phryne seems to have found her grove in this story along with moving into her new, fashionable domicile. She has to solve two cases at once, the murder of a cantankerous, generally disliked husband and father and the kidnapping of a little girl. Phryne handles both cases with her normal aplomb, intuition and style along with a little wing walking and flying. I especially like Greenwood's use of language and how it reflects the times; this adds another layer of fun and effervescence to these stories that makes me look forward to the next one. I recommend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars excellent historical mystery.......2006-08-02

In the three months that the Honorable Phyrne Fisher has lived in Australia, she has made a name for herself as an investigator who always solves her cases. She solved a case for a woman who travels in high society circles and that woman gives Phyrne's business a glowing recommendation to her friends. Her latest client Mrs. McNaughton is afraid that her son will kill her husband because he refuses to lend his son money to go on an airplane adventure. At the airport Phyrne talks to Bill McNaughton and tells her about her mother's fears and he tells he was never intending to kill his father. Bill's friend Jack Lawton is amazed as he watches Phyrne fly Bill's plane with much skill.

The next day Phyrne learns that Mr. McNaughton has been murdered and Bill has been arrested. When he is released on bail he hires Phyrne to find the real killer. While she works that case Candida Maldon is kidnapped and held for ransom. Jack convinces the family to hire Phyrne, who she devises a plan using Bill's plane to find and retrieve the kidnapped girl. Solving Bill's problem is a piece of cake in comparison.

Kerry Greenwood is one of Australia's most talented mystery writers. Her heroine is a woman who would be at home in the twenty-first century but since she lives in the 1920's she is careful to project a proper image while still doing what she wants. The wily, spunky heroine somehow makes the audience believe she is smart enough to easily solve two cases in a matter of days while the exotic locale will please armchair travelers.

5 out of 5 stars takes your breath away.......2006-01-12

this second in the series is even better than the first. and it features airplanes.

the characterizations are first rate, the plot is nicely paced, the resolution satisfying, the information about bi-planes enough to send anyone out to find and fly one.

phyne's situation develops and characters who will continue in the series are introduced. this book could still be read without reference to the first, as there is enough backstory to bring a reader up to date.

this series is a must for any mystery lover, but any read could enjoy them for the writing, the humor, the history of australia, and, of course, for phyrne.

4 out of 5 stars fun adventure.......2004-11-19

When we borrowed it from the library, this was the 1st Bill Peet book my daughter & I read. We thoroughly enjoyed it & donated a copy to her school library. Merle longs to see the world beyond his neighborhood & sets out on adventure. The trip turns out to be more than he expected, but he achieves his goal & enjoys much scenery on the way.

My daughter was 4 when I wrote my initial review; now she is almost 7. The tale of Merle's journey is just as appropriate for a preschooler as a new reader in elementary school. This book inspired us to look for Bill Peet whenever we are shopping for bks at stores or libraries. We have donated several titles to her school library. The children love the stories themselves, & the sometimes rhyming. I love the humor & the sometimes morals.

Book Description

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is widely acknowledged as one of the leading airlines, if not the best airline, globally. This book provides insights into a simple but intriguing question: How has SIA managed to outperform other flag-carriers for decades, in an industry where it is notoriously difficult to succeed consistently?

Flying High in a Competitive Industry begins with an analysis of the airline industry and its key trends, moving on to a broad outline of SIA's strategic drivers of success. Empirical research was conducted at SIA to gain a deeper understanding of its strategy, core competencies and internal organization, innovation processes, and human resource practices, in order to distill strategy lessons that can inform the strategies of any organization competing in intensely competitive industries.

The book ends with some strategic lessons that we believe apply to any organization that aims to achieve sustainable success in hyper-competitive markets.

5 out of 5 stars Answer to Your Case Studies on SQ.......2006-03-19

This is the best reference for students doing Tourism Studies or Service Marketing!

I have done many case studies on SQ when I was taking my Tourism Management degree; it's HRM, finance, marketing strategies, service quality... and now, after 4 years, most of the answers I needed is in this book!

Great airline! Although many people are clueless of where Singapore is (some even thought it is a part of Japan or China or Vietnam), they sure know Singapore Airlines is the Best Airline in the World.

I hope SQ continues to revolutionalize its strategy in achieving peak service performance.

5 out of 5 stars The business secrets of Singapore Airlines - revealled!.......2005-12-20

Since 1990 I have flown more than one million miles on Singapore Airlines. The quality of service is consistently outstanding. Where else can you find such warm, professional, and responsive service in a brutally challenging industry?

Singapore Airlines knows the secrets to delivering spectacular service and superior profits. Finally, a well-researched and thoughtful book reveals the inside secrets of Singapore Airlines's "Cost Effective Service Excellence".

Great reading, great business lessons, great service!
