Book Description
Originally published in 1955, As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me has seen international success ever since. It has been translated into fifteen languages, sold more than 12 million copies, and is the basis for an award-winning German entry at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. Recounting an incredible real-life adventure, it tracks the destiny of German soldier Clemens Forrell who, in the aftermath of WWII, was sentenced to twenty-five years of forced labor in a lead mine in the barren eastern reaches of Siberia. Subjected to the brutality of the camp and the climate, Forrell dreamed continuously of escape—and then daringly effected it. From East Cape across the vast trackless wastes of Siberia, for thousands of miles and three years, with fear as his most intimate companion, Forrell fled treachery and endured some of the most inhospitable conditions on earth. In a long series of taped interviews with esteemed German author Josef M. Bauer, Forrell unfolded his remarkable story of survival. Bauer not only reconstructs Forrell’s arduous journey to the Iranian frontier and freedom; he also poignantly evokes the emotional content of Forrell’s brave quest—emerging as an affecting portrait of a man who strove and triumphed against all odds.

Don't even think of buying this junk.......2007-09-22
I was very, very dissapointed with this book. After having read the amazing story of Theodor Kröger (a German who survived not only the Tsarist prisons but also the communist gulags) I wanted more of this and so I ordered this book. But what I got was a kind of telegram-style book with so much ommisions in the story, that you wonder why did somebody write it at all. If you can't get the story right, then don't tell it. Also, this is supposed to be a non-fiction story, but the dialogues between the lead character and his captors and/or fellow-prisoners are put on paper like they were held yesterday. If you're looking for a Papillon story, you better look somewhere else. I didn't even finish the book, it was a waste of my time.
a wild ride.......2007-07-26
I found this book to be inspiring and motivational. It is the amazing tale of a daring escape and a treacherous journey across the frozen Siberian north. They only thing that disappointed me was that the ending was anti-climactic in my opinion. Just a simply amazing book, there is a reason why it has been translated in to 15 languages and sold more then 12 millon copies.
Amazing .......2007-05-07
All the superlatives belong to this tale: remarkable, daring, unbelievable, amazing, incredible, beyond belief, extraordinary. That a person could 1. escape from a Soviet labor camp, 2. in the dead of winter, 3. from the farthest eastern point of Siberia, 4. after suffering from hunger and brutal treatment for three years, and still 5. make it home to Germany safely after another three years is a story for all lovers of survival dramas. The author expertly and faithfully chronicles Josef Bauer's account without glossing over the details of what it took to survive. I didn't come to like Mr. Bauer from this telling, however, I did feel a deep respect for his perseverance and stamina. Two other books of escape and survival that I recommend even more highly are: The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz and We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance by David Howarth.
As Far as my Feet will Carry me.......2007-01-29
Incredible story of survival and the will to live.
This book was excellent, I couldn't put it down........2006-04-28
As for the other half negative reviews, like it being for a young reader, don't pay any attention to that. Obviously those reviews are written by people that can't look or think beyond their own egos nor actually try to imagine what it must have been like, what the permanent affects were after such an altering event, and obvious emotional scars that must have continued on and on... After I finished the book, I re-read the preface and understood why there seemed to be pieces "I" wanted answers to, but understood why they weren't there.
I recommend this book to anyone of all ages. It's absolutely an amazing account of someone accomplishing a journey home with EVERYTHING against him and the beckoning door of death at every turn. How he survived? It's beyond me....
Now, I will hunt for the DVD....if anyone knows where I can find the DVD, please find a way of letting me know. Thanks!

Book Description
"Reading Anthony Tognazzini is like having a surprise party thrown in your honor on every page.
I Carry A Hammer In My Pocket For Occasions Such As These turns cartwheels, plants daisies, and sings love songs in honor of all that is strange, sad, serious, and sublime about being alive."-Myla Goldberg, author of
Bee Season
I Carry A Hammer In My Pocket For Occasions Such As These is a collection of fifty-seven pieces that range in length from compressed paragraphs to ten-page stories. Characters, voices, and surreal scenarios are unified in a playful vision of the world sustained by metaphor, memory, cartoon, tragedy, love story, and song.
Speed and brevity are a large part of the collection's design. In a culture where attention spans are shorter and more fractured, the need for a literature for the subway and the waiting room-something to resonate in the smaller gaps of our lives-is emerging. To this end,
I Carry A Hammer In My Pocket For Occasions Such As These is quick, colloquial, and comic, yet challenges readers to think. It offers-at a glance-a journey into a fictional world that is poetic and narrative, fantastic and familiar, accessible and adventurous.
"The Difference"
Although I was never an early riser, my father always counseled me to rise with the sun.
"Early bird gets the worm!" he told me.
"Sure," I said, "but the worm who sleeps late, lives."
Anthony Tognazzini lives in New York City, where he makes his living as a teacher and freelance journalist. His awards include an AWP Award, an Academy of American Poets prize, a Greer Artist Foundation Fellowship, and a Hemingway Fellowship.
Customer Reviews:
Flash fiction at its best.......2007-06-28
I ordered the book after discovering it in "Poets and Writers" and was immediately captivated by the brevity, frankness, honesty of Tognazzini's brilliance on every page. A real treat, must-read, literary gem--underrated.
A Fine Collection of Flash.......2007-06-26
I often long for a simpler life, with fewer complications and distractions, in which my attention span can occasionally linger to enjoy a particular moment. The sun in my life reached its zenith a few years ago and is picking up speed as it drops toward the horizon and so I tend to resent that, as a society, we boast of our superior ability to multi-task even as we sheepishly admit to the negative effect of refusing to take time out to occasionally clear the mechanism. That said, I've resisted "flash fiction" as something that caters to our ever-shortening attention span.
For the uninitiated, flash fiction contains all of the classic story elements: protagonist, conflict, and resolution; but unlike the traditional short story, the limited word length often leaves some of these elements to only be implied in the written storyline, which is perhaps best exemplified by Ernest Hemingway's six-word flash, "For sale: baby shoes, never worn."
Although it can be traced back to Aesop's Fables, with the likes of Chekhov, O. Henry, Kafka, H.P. Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury contributing, flash fiction is enjoying a resurgence on the Internet. Although I sometimes cringe from the niche it fills in our fractured society, despite all of its professed connectivity through cell phones and email, flash is a viable art form that presents a challenge to the writer he or she doesn't normally face when writing a longer piece: strictly meat and bones writing without all of the side dishes.
Anthony Tognazzini seems to have mastered this literary art form with his collection of flash fiction, I Carry a Hammer In My Pocket for Occasions Such as These. Tognazzini understands the concept, in flash fiction, that what is left unsaid is as equally important as what is said. In flash, less is more.
Composed of fifty-seven pieces ranging in length from a single paragraph to several pages, none hit the reader over the head, yet most hit the nail on the head with their brevity, focus and message. From the opening piece, A Primer, in which a naked man paints himself into the landscape, to the title piece about a brief encounter between strangers on the street, to A Telephone Conversation with My Father (yeah, they really do love each other), to The Enigma of Possibility -- how can a man with the longest tongue in the world manage to find a way to pay the rent in the aftermath of having just lost his job? -- to Working Out with Kafka, where Kafka meets himself while riding a bike crossing a bridge, to Old House -- "I know how lonely the house is when there is no one to live there," to Baseball Is Dangerous but Love Is Everything, where love cures a young man's "not-right scramble and his thinking irregular slightly," the result of a childhood beaning on the head with a baseball bat, I Carry a Hammer is a fine collection of flash that ranges from the fantastical to the commonplace, that contains humor and portrays grief and loss, that turns the mundane into the fascinating, and is almost always thought-provoking.
Tognazzini's voice is fresh, his narrative sharp: My stomach jumped like an angry, barking dog and I spun, throwing up in every direction. When I finished, I regarded the abstract, brown-red splashes on the tile. I thought, Pollock, and it seems tailor-made for flash; yet for some reason, perhaps because their text lack a surgeon's precision with a scalpel, the longer pieces, particularly Gainesville, Oregon -- 1962 -- don't work as well. Tognazzini's talent seems to "flash" with brilliance more often in the flash element.
Still, the overall effect of reading I Carry a Hammer is addicting: you never know what you're going to get when you turn the next page, but you can't refrain from taking a peek.
Recommended.

"I'm going to be brave in ways you won't recognize.".......2007-05-23
Anthony Tognazzini is more than a brilliant writer; he is an extraordinarily gifted cartographer. He has created a relief map of the human psyche in its gorgeous flawed glory--the meandering browns and bottomless blues and twisting greens that define our dizzy spirit; the mountains and valleys of dense loneliness that surround our mortal coil. All the beauty and all the blemishes are manifest in his magnificent prose.
"I Carry A Hammer In My Pocket For Occasions Such As These" is intellectual, innovative, insightful, incisive, intuitive, intense, and, FUNNY! Tognazzini infuses his slick, saucy wit on every page. Every day I identify a new favorite among these spectacular shorts. Today I have two: the allusively absurd "The Reason We Were So Afraid," and the vibrant snapshot "Many Fine Marriages Begin at Friends' Parties." The header of this review is a line from "Same Game" that swallowed me whole.
This omnibus is for all of us--those of us with questions and those who have the answers. Those who think and those who feel. Those who are lost and those who've been found. This book is a gift. So, to Anthony Tognazzini, I say, THANK YOU.
Daringly Original..........2007-05-11
(Anthony read as part of my visiting authors series at the West Side YMCA on April 27, 2007. This is from my introduction to the event).
Anthony Tognazzini's stories show an acceptance of calamity, a knowledge that what we prepare for may never come, but something shockingly unexpected very well might. And throughout his stories, sometimes very much coming as a surprise, there are moments of pure empathetic humanity, where Anthony gives us characters simply longing for a better life.
His stories explode the artificiality of social graces and the necessity of violating them to get at the rich, rewarding or scary stuff that life offers us. There's a desire to not be caught in automatic action and reaction, but to be vividly present, awake. Sometimes he does it by having his characters react tangentially to their prompts, never quite meeting the situation head-on, but finding novel ways of engaging their fellow actors, their surroundings.
There's a mounting sense of desperation at the heart of many of the stories in "I Carry a Hammer for Occasions Such As These" Anthony's vivid imagery and twists of language and meaning reflect the fracturing of personalities; the breaks in communication between neighbors, lovers, family members. His well-honed sense of the absurd serves both to heighten the emotional blows when they come, and also to highlight the preposterous and ridiculous moments that life constantly presents us. The stories, written with the economy and force of poetry, are both dream-state and hard-reality, and much of the joy in reading them is the constant subtle shifting between one and the other. But no matter how unusual the image--and I prefer the term original--Anthony always keeps us in the physical realm, rooted in sensation.
Most of the stories are short, some shockingly so. But whether they be a three-sentence story like the clear and utterly concise "The Difference," or rich, extended stories like the violent, erotic and heartbreaking `Gainesville, Oregon--1962," Anthony shows a skill and ability to take us along for whatever the length of the story, like a jazz musician who can play a pithy, classic melody, or can stretch out and blow, always riveting our attention.
Reading Anthony Tognazzini's bracingly original work is a complete pleasure, both an escape and an opportunity to dig in deep to something worthwhile. In one of the last pieces in "I Carry a Hammer..." "Found Story," he writes "I found this gift...and I so much want you to have it."
When reading is like flying... .......2007-04-07
Reading Anthony Tognazzini's stories is like fishing in your underwear in someone else's dream. It is like dunking with your left hand over Shaquille O'Neal while playing a cello with your right. It is like going into Baskin-Robbins, eating one scoop of all 31 flavors, and magically emerging, VICTORIOUSLY, with no stomach ache.
If April is the cruellest month, then you should read this book this April and it will be just like a summer day, or Christmas Day, or any time in life before algebra.
If you like stories, if you like words, or if you like waking up on Sunday morning, rolling back over, and going back to sleep again because the dreams are so good and the bed is so warm... then you will love this book like a refreshing swim in a shark-free ocean.

Karen Casey has been a part of my life since '83 through her daily meditation book, "Each Day a New Beginning". She has inspired me to laugh, cry and to ponder the possibilities. Her newest book, "The Miracle of Sponsorship", is an inspiration! She has encouraged me again to grow and stretch myself even further on my road to recovery. The insight of her collection of stories reminds me there are many paths I can take to achieve a balance in my life. There are many people out there struggling same as myself. Each one with stories of how they survived. All I have to do is to reach out. Sponsors have been a significant part of my life, whether I was aware of them or not. Karen has helped me to appreciate their importance in my life. I will never be alone on this road again. Thanks Karen for being one of those people. For giving me the hope that I need every day of my life!
Book Description
Curious George, a favorite of millions of children all over the world, became Jorge el Curioso when translated into Spanish more than ten years ago. Now, for the first time, this Spanish edition is available as a book on tape.
Jorge el Curioso is the perfect choice for English-speaking readers to learn Spanish and for Spanish speakers to learn to read English.
Side one of the tape features a Spanish reading, side two features a reading in English (both sides have page-turn signals).
Customer Reviews:
Jorge el Curioso.......2007-05-26
This is Curious George in Spanish. My grandson who just turned six loves Curious George. I want him to love and learn Spanish; hence, the buying of the book. Since he practically has the book memorized in English, I felt it would be easy for him to pick up words and phrases in Spanish.
Not quite as educational as advertised.......2007-01-20
The dust jacket for this book, which you can view here on amazon by clicking "Search inside this book" advertises: "This translation has been made especially for American children who want to learn Spanish. They will find a complete vocabulary at the end of the book. In addition, some Spanish phrases and expressions that may be unknown to the beginner are translated at the foot of each page."
Strangely, the book itself does not have those features. While it is a charming book, and my children will certainly enjoy it, there is no vocabulary at the end of the book, and there are no footnotes.
Great book.......2007-01-05
There are so few of these, especially from an English original. Buy it for your kids to learn more Spanish.
Spanish Speakers Delight.......2006-03-11
My husband and I are both fluent in Spanish and we love this book for our two year old son. I speak only Spanish to him, hubby speaks to him in both English and Spanish. We are always looking for good books in Spanish.
This one has great, colourful pictures (there are two pictures with pipe smokers in them, but come on! It is a classic and if you can't teach your children not to smoke, is this really going to influence them that much!ha ha)and lots of good vocabulary for every day things written into a simple, fun story. It is beyond the "board book level" and yet not so complicated that a 22 month old gets bored. On the weekend, he asks his dad to read it 4 or 5 times a day, AND he will happily sit through the whole thing, especially the zoo animals at the end. (That is my only problem...the suggestion that the zoo is the greatest place to live!! in Captivity!!)
Note that there is not an English translation included, but if you are learning Spanish (and especially if you know the English story already) and want a bit of a challenge for yourself, the pictures will help you with YOUR vocabulary development, too.
Great to add to any Spanish Library.......2005-12-27
If you'd like to teach your child Spanish, reading meaningful books is a great way to do it. As other reviewers have noted, this story is easy enough to give hints for vocabulary memorization - and the child will retain the story as well as the words. If you're worried about pronunciation, you can get something with a CD like Flip Flop Spanish to help you and your child gain more confidence as well as to be able to talk ABOUT the story in Spanish.
My weekly Spanish classes (ages 4 to 40) all love it when I read aloud to them, and this is a book I use often. It keeps them laughing and increases vocabulary.

Customer Reviews:
My kids love this book.......2007-05-26
While not as cute and creative as the original Curious George books, this one is decent. My kids don't mind at all and they love to read it over & over again.
Fraud.......2006-03-22
Buyer beware--this is written "in the style of HA Ray," i.e. by a faceless corporation and is illustrated by "Vipah Interactive" and was apparently written in the mid-90s. In other words, it's a scam. The story and illustrations both lack the charm and creativity of the original Curious George books--please avoid this attempt to cash in on the original.
Fun story.......2005-12-29
My 18 month old loves to have this book read to her. She enjoys seeing George make pancakes, and especially loves when he adds blueberries. It is a cute book, and reminds me of those I read as a child.
Curious George breaks out a spatula.......2004-06-30
Curious George goes to a pancake breakfast (actually, it's more like a county fair). Then, he makes pancakes while the cook is away. He makes them quicker and better than the cook. Then the cook chases him away. As usual, George gets in a little bit of trouble. Then all is well, and everyone praises George.
This book has part of the charm of CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO AN ICE CREAM SHOP, with almost exactly the same plot. There's nothing surprising here-- kids and adults will see Curious George in another formulaic plot. This book was adapted from the Curious George film series, and it is based on characters created by H.A. Rey. It is NOT one of the George books written by H.A. Rey.
Some readers are delighted by Curious George, and the plot doesn't matter. In that case, choose CURIOUS GEORGE MAKES PANCAKES.
If you want a better story, try CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO AN ICE CREAM SHOP, or, better still, one of the H.A. Rey-authored original Curious George stories, such as CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO THE HOSPITAL or CURIOUS GEORGE GETS A MEDAL.
Brings back memories.......2003-11-25
Everytime I see a Curious George book I remember how much I loved reading them as a kid, I must confess that nothing has changed. This is a funny, entertaining book for both adults reading to children and for children themselves.

Toy Story Carry Along Treasury.......2007-01-05
My daughter loves the Toy Story movies. This book follows the story closely and has great photos. Since it is a board book the pages won't get ripped and it will last a long time.
Great take-along!.......2006-11-15
This book has been a favorite to bring along in the car, whether it is for long trips or even short ones. The children get to read about their favorite movie, instead of watching the whole movie! It's been great! And the handle means they can carry it, one less thing for me to carry!
FABULOUS!.......2006-03-20
My son loves this book. The handle makes it super easy for him to carry and he loves to take it with him everywhere.
A beyond treasure.......2005-06-14
This book is great for the rough and tumble child. My son loves this book and since its super sturdy, I don't worry about him destroying it. The illustrations are incredible and the book is constructed really well. A great find for the buzz lightyear fan.
Great carry along book!.......2004-06-27
Whoever thought of the idea of putting a handle on a hard cover book is a genius. It's perfect for a 2-3 year old to tote the book everywhere with them. My 3 year old son loves Buzz & Woody and this was a great gift. He carries it to him to bed, and carries it with him when he gets up. Wished they had more Disney books with the handle!

Three Billy Goats Gruff - Listen and learn with carry along books and cassette favorites
Customer Reviews:
A current favorite.......2007-10-02
This has fast become one of my 2 year old's favorites. She can already recite the book almost word for word using different voices for each Billy Goat Gruff. We get a real kick out of listening to her "read" to herself!
Three Billy Goats-GREAT.......2007-04-04
I was just reminded of this teriffic retelling of Three Billy Goats Gruff. The suspense and pacing are brilliant. The illustrations are gorgeous AND funny. It was one of my all-time favorite read-alouds when I was a children's librarian. Galdone never failed in capturing the kids' imagination and story hour was always the better with one of his books. A MUST HAVE!
The illustrations are priceless!.......2007-01-23
A delightful retelling of the old story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. This particular book stands out from all the others because of the illustrations, which are priceless! E.g., for the trip across the bridge, the bigger goats dress up the littlest one in a diaper; the biggest goat suits up in a black leather motorcycle jacket and dark glasses!
The book is as much fun for grownups as it is for children!
Two naaahs up for the Billy Goats Gruff.......2007-01-19
I used the book for a class I'm teaching on goats to 3-4 year olds. The story was a great success with group. The children were able to take what they learned about goats and see it pictured in the story. Example, goats have beards, horns and hooves. All of these features are beautifuuly illustrated on each page.
F.Y.I. Many of the children were happy to see the troll wasn't killed only pushed off the bridge. It is sonething to mention if it goes unnoticed.
Overall I highly recommend this version over any other I have seen out there because of the illustrations, simple text and story flow.
A favorite rendition of the classic fairy tale. .......2006-10-23
The kids just hoot when they see the biggest and meanest billy goat gruff dressed like a motorcyle dude in his leather jacket and sunglasses. The three billy goats (personified) have a problem and put their heads together to hatch a plan. They outsmart the ugly troll who lives under the bridge and finally enjoy a picnic of fresh green grass (checkered blanket, plates and all) on the other side of the bridge.

Curious George.......2007-07-06
Both my boys love curious george. And you can never go wrong with a book.
not good.......2007-05-22
My daughter got tired of this book while reading it. If you're looking for a book about a chocolate factory, then this is it. If however you're looking for a fun book about a mischievous monkey, then this is not it.
Great Classic Gift.......2007-04-11
My 5 year old daughter just loves Curious George. Ever since the new movie came out she has been hooked on the older adventures of George. She is easily able to listen to the tape on her personal tape player and read along with the book. With the tapes I don't have to worry about her scratching them or ruining them after just a few uses. I would recommend this to anyone considering it for their child.
My Favorite Curious George Book Thus Far.......2006-07-20
Written in the spirit of the classic books by Margaret and H.A. Rey, Curious George Goes to a Chocolate Factory features the clean, simple illustrations of Vipah Interactive. (Other George stories are written/illustrated by Mary Weston, who gets enthusiastic with the black charcoal--resulting in dirty looking illustrations.)
One day, the man with the yellow hat and George go to tour a chocolate factory. George is enthralled to learn that there is a special coding system used to indicate various types of chocolate or fillings. For example, the chocolate with a squiggle is a truffle, the one with a little swirl on top is fudge, and the one with the N on it is for nougat.
In a scene reminiscent of the classic I Love Lucy episode, George accidentally turns a machine on "very fast"--sending chocolates speeding down a conveyor belt. He then helps the workers box up the chocolates (eating while he works!), and ends up saving the day.
George doesn't even accept a box of chocolates as a reward--because he has a tummy ache!
This delightful book also has a neat game on the back, with the different chocolates as game squares. All you need is two coins to play the simple game--three if you're playing with a friend.
Maybe it's because I'm a chocolate lover, but this is my favorite Curious George book! My son seems to love it, too.
I am a happy customer.......2006-03-20
My kids, boys 5 and 8 both love the book on tape and have listened to it several times. But really, can you go wrong with Curious George? I am a happy customer

Learn letters with Curious George.......2004-09-15
In H. A. Rey's Curious George Learns the Alphabet, the man in the yellow hat teaches George how to read. George learns each of the letters of the alphabet as the man in the yellow hat relates both the upper- and lower-case letters to an object it resembles, starting with the letter. So, "A" is the open mouth of an alligator, while "a" is a piece of an apple; "M" is a mailman and "m" is a mouse; "R" is a rabbit and "r" is a rooster. Each letter receives a two-page spread. The illustrations are typical Rey drawings with a great deal of personality; within the object representing the letter, the form of the letter is easily recognizable, superimposed on the object with thick black lines. Some of the letter-objects are a little peculiar, but children who are just learning that letters represent sounds and objects will delight in the wacky illustrations of a spotted "J"-bodied jaguar, a man with an "n" for a nose, and the "q"-headed quarterback. The narrative lessons on letters are interrupted a few times with interludes for George to play football and buy doughnuts. Beneath the illustrations, each time the featured letter appears in the text (whether at the beginning, middle, or end of the word), it is highlighted with color. In the story, George and the man in the yellow hat helpfully model the instructional process. Although focused on letters and their shapes, because this book also tells a story, Curious George Learns the Alphabet offers a good way to first introduce the concept of letters, sounds, and words to children who are not yet focused directly on the alphabet. More advanced readers will also be able to focus on letter sounds and letters in the context of words and sentences.
H.A. Rey uses good learning skills.......1998-10-08
H.A. Rey uses good learning skills to teach children the alphabet. He uses visual education by making the letters into animals and people that the letter resembles. And he also uses good repetition after introducing the letter by using phrases that have the perticular letter in it and he highlights the letter used to make it stand out for the child. This book makes learning the alphabet fun and easy. It is original and playful, but what book with curious george isn't?
