Fun Fun Fun.......2007-05-01
Out of the 13 short stories, I enjoyed 10 thoroughly. A great way to discover some authors I was unfamiliar with. A great investment.
Funny and Tender.......2007-04-05
I bought this book because I'm an avid fan of Jennifer Weiner. As a result I have been introduced to the fun and whimsical writing of the other authors who contributed their short stories.
Each short story is engaging and very entertaining.
Fun to read!!.......2006-11-10
The book was great- I dont usually like short stories but it was perfect for when I was working out or just needed a quick break from reality!
Fun read most of the time.......2006-11-06
Most of the short stories were quite good and left me wanting to delve into the characters more; others not so much. Overall a good, light read.
Women Authors.......2006-08-20
This was a great way to "sample" lots of new authors. The stories were well written, and I intend to read books by several of the authors, I enjoyed them so much.

Book Description
Jen Lancaster hates to burst your happy little bubble, but life in the big city isn't all it's cracked up to be. Contrary to what you see on TV and in the movies, most urbanites aren't party-hopping in slinky dresses and strappy stilettos. But lucky for us, Lancaster knows how to make the life of the lower crust mercilessly funny and infinitely entertaining.
Whether she's reporting rude neighbors to Homeland Security, harboring a crush on her grocery store clerk, or fighting-and losing-the Battle of the Stairmaster- Lancaster explores how silly, strange, and not-so-fabulous real city living can be. And if anyone doesn't like it, they can kiss her big, fat, pink, puffy down parka.

So FUNNY it makes being bad look good!.......2007-10-03
Jen takes on temp jobs while waiting for her advance check from selling her first book. To fill the extra hours, she has written a hilarious memoir about her ordinary life experiences. Cross her and you may be the lucky recipient of one of her crafty letters that you wouldn't believe someone would have the nerve to write. (And what a great tool for releasing anger) If your one of her stay at home friends, you may be on the recieving end of funny daily scoops that rival a soap opera drama, and much more interesting by far. -The thing is you never read any e-mails from them, so their lives must be dreadfully boring in comparison.
I've never had a book make me laugh out loud (even in public) like this one did! This girl has lightning quick wit and humor. Actually, reading this made me feel a little more sane. (Thanks Jen:) I thought I had an overactive mind, she's definately got me beat, and her thoughts are way funnier than mine could ever be! Her behavior and mouth are so excusable because she's just hilarious. She really does make being bad look good.
This is a keeper. When I'm feeling low and needing a good laugh, I'll be reaching for this. Reading this will make passing the time (in line or Dr's office or anywhere) much more pleasant. Just know that it is very likely to make you bust out laughing in front of everyone!
Jen Lancaster's world.......2007-09-27
Bitter is the New Black, Jen's first book, was wonderful. This second book is great, but I feel it falls a little short of the fullness of BINB. Not as much of an actual story line, just tons of funny scenarios and banter - which are all great, but I'm not as anxious to find out what happens next (when does Jen find a job, how will they survive the next month, etc). It definitely still keeps me chuckling page after page though. Since there is not much drama in this book, I am enjoying getting to know Fletch a little more.
HILARIOUS!.......2007-09-10
I couldn't put this down, it is so funny! I was laughing and chuckling so hard that I even annoyed my husband (who is not nearly as patient as Jen's husband, Fletch). She writes what the rest of us are thinking, but are now too politically correct to say out loud. Awesome. I check www.Jennsylvania.com every morning in my little cube farm for a chuckle. I can't wait for the next one.
HILARIOUS.......2007-09-06
I loved bitter and didn't know how the author, Jen Lancaster, could create anything funnier and then I read this! While reading it I was reminded of the first time I saw wedding crashers. The whole time I am thinking I have to go back and reread this because there are sooo many funny things going on here! This is a great read and a great gift for friends!!
If you don't get the humor, I'm sorry no one can help you!.......2007-09-03
I loved Jen Lancaster's first book and this follow up was even more brilliant and funny than the first. She is a caustic bitchy broad with a keen ability to throw in enough self deprection to let you know she doesn't take herself to seriously. If you cannot appreciate the humor I'm afraid no one can help you. The only bad part for me was that it had to end. I cannot wait to read the project she is currently working on. I know it will be a great escape just like this one.

Features a 3,000 word Introduction by Stephen King!
Customer Reviews:
Holy crap........2007-09-05
This book next to Stephen King's The Long Walk and Pet Semetary, is the most brutal book I have ever read. No I haven't read many King books so don't start on me about that but anyway the violence in this novel is absolutely horrendous and yet I couldn't stop reading it. It took me 3 hours to read the entire book and I didn't put it down once. It's actually not too long at just about 300 pages. But that didn't take anything away from the story. Basically there are three acts. The first act is about a normal neighborhood with a bunch of kids and about a boy with an innocent crush. The second act is the start of the descent in the insanity of the Chandler family where Ruth verbally trashes the two girls, Meg and Susan. The third act is the real kicker. It is all about the torture, the violence and the brutality that the neighborhood kids and Ruth do to Meg. Now a lot of readers have said that David, whose the entire book is based on his viewpoint, doesn't do anything to help Meg, the girl he loves, until she is pratically at her death. Saying that he could have done something before or could have gone to the cops and tell them what was happening at the Chandler house but he doesn't, he just stands and watches as these disgusting things are unleashed on Meg but my theory is that the kid was tramautized and perhaps also fascinated. Remember at the time of these acts, he was only 12. And what makes it more disturbing that Ruthand her three boys, literally become monsters. They are human beings, not creatures and are far worse scarier than any mythical or fictional beast I've read in any book. And also that this can happen and has happened in any "typical" neighborhood. The story is apparently loosely based on a true story of a girl that was tortured to death by a family. I could feel Meg's pain and in the end, lost her will. I do not recommend this book if you are feeling depressed or suicidal, avoid it like the plague.
Good Read, If you can stomach it.......2007-08-31
I came at this book believing it was just another horror novel I could enjoy one late night. But I was soon to discover the book to be based on a real life Murder that happened in 1965 to a young 16-year old girl named Sylvia Likens. Though this book now shed light on a horrific event it somehow gives it more depth and readability and helps to understand the crime in a more superficial way. This book is horrifying and saddening. But none the less it is a good novel but not for the faint at heart. Read this at your own risk...because it is gruesome and sadistic but it is a lesson in life.
Amazing Read.......2007-08-21
This book was amazing!! I went thru so many emotions! I still have nightmares when I think about the book
True story of the 'Torture Mother'.......2007-08-19
I was happily reading TGND when I happened to do a google search and found the real story behind this horror novel. Then I just couldn't finish it. I like my evil stylistic and confectionary, think Dan Simmons Song of Kali and Poppy Z. Brite's Exquisite Corpse. But this....this evil is so raw and unbridled. And the fact that the neighbors just played along. Lastly, the complete and total innocence of the victim. Names and dates have been changed to protect the wicked...the only innocents in this are dispatched of at the end.
Hardest Read Ever..........2007-08-17
This has to be one of the hardest fiction books to read. What starts as a idyllic 50's childhood story quickly descends into relentless torture and degradation. A mother, her three boys, and the boys neighbor friend visit some very unthinkable torment on a poor young girl. It gets to the point where you may have to put the book down for awhile, and come back to it some time later.
I've seen a few reviews that complain about the lack of motive or that it's implausible that a mother and her children would do these thing. What these people miss is that this book is based on a true story:
When 16yr old Sylvia Marie Likens was found dead, she was covered with bruises and small wounds, later revealed to be cigarette and match burns that numbered over 100. There were also large areas where the outer layer of skin had peeled off. Likens also had a large letter "3" branded on her chest. However, the most remarkable injuries, by far, were the words in block letters that had been burned directly onto her stomach: "I'M A PROSTITUTE AND PROUD OF IT!"
The crime had been committed by an group of teenagers and children, some as young as 11 and 12, led by the 37-year-old woman who's care Sylvia was left in while her parents where away.
There was no reason, no clear motivation for these acts.
This true crime excerpt should speak to the brutality you will find in the book. Not for the weak stomached or easily offended.

IRP REVIEW BY E. PRADO * 5 PERIOD.......2006-11-16
REVIEW
For my IRP, I chose to read 'Lindsay Lohan - The IT Girl Next Door' by Lauren Brown. I chose to do my IRP on Lindsay Lohan because I am a huge fan of her acting. My all-time favorite movie is Mean Girls and Lindsay Lohan plays the main character, Cady Herron, in the film! In this biography, Brown makes sure to keep her overall tone of the book very casual and basic. I learned many details about Lohan in just about every chapter. Did you know that Lindsay was born Lindsay Dee Lohan but later changed her name to Lindsay Morgan Lohan? Brown continues to add quirky, fun facts throughout the entire book. I was amazed at how Lohan always loves to have many things in common with the roles she plays in the movies. Lohan actually states that she "only plays characters" she can "relate to," which definitely seems to be the case so far!
This book was very inspirational in many different ways. There are tons of tips from Lohan and Brown given to the reader during the book on steps Lohan took to becoming the huge movie star that she is today. My favorite parts of the book were mainly all of the new things I learned during the book. `Lindsay's Lohan - The IT Girl Next Door' was broken up into eighteen chapters, all filled with great detail and zest! The beginning of the book talks mainly about her childhood, pastimes, modeling, and acting. I loved how they gave me distinctive facts about Lohan that just stuck in my head. Did you know Lindsay Lohan was the first redheaded model with the Ford Modeling Agency? Each chapter also focuses on main things during Lohan's life. There is even an entire chapter dedicated to the ever so popular `Huff with Hilary Duff' about the allegations that both girls were dating pop star Aaron Carter.
There were a few things I disliked about the book but the main thing was definitely the reading level of the book. I did not feel like I was being challenged throughout the story at all. I felt like the biography was meant for a middle school student, not a high school. I also thought that I was tricked into reading the book because the reading level clearly stated eighth through twelfth grade. There were also a lot of things that I think should have been left out, like the last four chapters could have been turned into one chapter. The fifteenth chapter talks about astrology and Lohan being a cancer (just like me!), and the sixteenth talks about numerology. The seventeenth chapter is a thirty question `pop quiz' on Lohan and the eighteenth and final chapter is just a list of websites to surf.
Overall, I think that book was mediocre. I felt that they could have used better words, but would be, once again, perfect for a middle school aged child. I recommend this book despite not receiving its full 5 stars to anyone. It is a great book to educate people on celebrities and also to help people get a better point of view of how life really is in the lime-light twenty-four seven.
Lindsay Lohan The "It" Girl Next Door By: Lauren Brown [2004].......2005-08-21
This is a great Lindsay biography It is a lengthy read that gives the right information on how Lindsay started her career. It gives cool facts on "The Parent Trap" and ends her movie coverage with "Mean Girls". This really shows that Lindsay has feelings about the tabloids and she can really get hurt. Get to know the real Lindsay not the partying Red Bull guzzling singer and actress robot type person in Hollywood. It has some pages of really glossy photos. Again you get to know the real Lindsay with this book. Buy This today!
ULTIMATE FOR LINDSAY FANS.......2005-02-12
THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR ALL LINDSAY FANS! If you don't have this on your book shelf, you're missing out. And the author, Lauren Brown, is a very talented writer!

Customer Reviews:
Amazing book!!.......2006-10-25
I have been a mystery/thriller junkie for some time now, really soaking up and enjoying the work of John Sanford, Mary Higgins Clark and others. I just "stumbled" upon the author's book, "The Girl Next door" one night while exiting a local bookstore, and I shamefully admit I have never read this author's work before, even though I may have given it a cursory glance. Given the fact that I enjoyed this book immensely, I have a lot of catching up to do in regards to reading her past novels.
I took a chance and bought the book, and it's definitley a page turner and one that is hard to put down. As mentioned, the story revolves around Nina Avery, a strong willed and somewhat independent aspiring New York actress who seeks justice for her father, Duncan Avery , who was wrongfully accused and imprisoned for the horrific murder of his wife. Nina must unravel a web of deceit, lies and brutality that will eventually lead her to the truth.
While I hated for the book to come to an end, the author skillfully gets to the point and keeps the reader interested throughout the entire book. I also like the fact that the book was not cluttered with filler and useless dialouge, but maintains a steady course to the final chapter and stunning conclusion.
I will definitely seek out the rest of Ms. Mac Donald's work and look forward to future novels by her. A must have in the collection of anyone who enjoys the mystery genre.
Feels like Mary Higgins Clark.......2005-11-29
which is a good thing in my opinion. The mystery is well plotted and the characters are likeable. However, the pace could have been better. I find the beginning to be a bit slow, and there are not much happening for the first half of the book, except introducing the characters, which makes is less suspenseful.
Like............WOW!.......2004-10-15
I have read all of Patricia MacDonald's book, but this was the best. I read it in two days. You have to really admire Nina for having so much faith in her Dad with all the evidence against him. Especially since it is her Mom that he is convicted of killing. And, it had a touch of romance without all the sexual dancing that so many books have. I am not a prude, I just rather have a good book with a good story and this one delivered just that.
Good Book.......2004-09-22
I thought this book was great. It just keeps you going. And the ending is something you would never expect. Very hard to put it down.
Good read if you need a book in a pinch.......2004-09-05
I ordered The Girl Next Door based on the description. While the book was a moderately good read, (I had no expectations of the book so to say i was dissapointed is not right because I was not.) it just didn't satisfy my reading need. Of course, all readers need to experience books for themselves and if they like thrillers (though this lacks a bit of thriller), you may wanna try this one. The story unfolds as most, with small speed bumps, and i can say i did not guess the bad guy. She did a good job with that one. I gave it two based on my reading standards.
Book Description
What Tom Wolfe did for astronauts and Roger Angell did for baseball, journalists Lindsy Van Gelder and Pamela Robin Brandt do for lesbians in this landmark book. Long misperceived as a separatist coven, a default option, or a sort of ladies' auxiliary to the gay men's movement, lesbian life has achieved a new visibility in the past few years. But for all the interest in who's out and who's not (yet), there's been surprisingly little understanding of the diversity and richness of lesbian experience. This funny, lively, and perceptive book will change all that. Drawing on more than a hundred interviews with women around the country, and on their own keen wits and eyes, Van Gelder and Brandt have composed an unprecedented portrait of how gay women today -- "born" and "made," lipsticked and flannel-shirted alike -- think, feel, love, and live. Three major "tribal" events -- the long-running Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, "Dinah" (the annual Dinah Shore Golf Tournament and party circuit, a mecca for upwardly mobile luppies), and a cross-country trek with the activist Lesbian Avengers en route to the 1994 Stonewall commemoration -- provide points of entry into an exploration of lesbian identity, social dynamics, and politics that's as entertaining as it is revealing. The result is a kaleidoscopic portrait that will resonate with lesbians themselves and reveal to their "neighbors" a world of unsuspected vibrancy and depth.
Customer Reviews:
Great book that is easy and fun to read........2002-12-05
This book is an excellent resource for the burning question "how do i meet people like me?" It is an excellent look at the lesbian/gay lifestyle in the US today, while being both very entertaining and educational. Many of the stories and places mentioned seem to center around the Southern California area, with specific club names and local contributors. I loved this book and all of the stories that these two intelligent women had the courage and humor to tell. I would recommend this book to anyone hoping to learn more about themselves or loved ones.
Enlightening and entertaining.......2000-12-20
This is a clever, informative book that attempts to explore the lesbian experience in the US without taking itself too seriously. The authors' breezy, almost conversational tone makes this a fun and educational read. Far from being elitist, the authors have attempted (and succeeded, IMO) to portray to vast diversity within our culture, from the Birkenstock-clad Michigan womyn to the lipstick crowd at Dinah, and everything in between. They sometimes poke gentle fun at some of the absurdities of lesbian society, without being critical or judgmental. I highly recommend this book for anyone, gay or straight, who wants to learn something about lesbian life and culture.
Elitest Garbage.......2000-12-07
As the carefully selected cover might infer this book gives much homage to lesbians of the lipstick variety (a worthy subject no doubt). However, on their trip to the "heart of lesbian america" physical beauty is singled out as the most important way to these women's hearts. Initially they do a good round-up of lesbian culture and hotspots. But they fluctuate between humor that touches all of us at one time or another and humor that is at the expense of lesbians that didn't make the Miss America cut. One woman's appearance is compared with a gorilla. On another occasion they go on a bender about "hefty bag ladies." On top of this the interviews are carefully worded so that we can be constantly reminded that none of the interviewees hate men (as if that should be such a focal point in a book about culture by and for women). Just to figure out where these ladies were coming from I picked up an issue of Allure (van gelder is an editor for the mag). Well the only thing I could find that she wrote was a nice little piece about how to make eyeshadow work with your complexion. Low blow? Maybe but these women hit below the belt everytime. If you want an interesting and smart look at lesbian culture and history take a look at Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers by Lillian Faderman.
Funny yet thought-provoking.......1999-03-14
Most people associate non-fiction with "dry and boring." This book is not dry or boring in any way. There are parts that had me laughing so hard tears were rolling down my cheeks. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival and the Lesbian Avengers. Funny and insightful stuff. It isn't intended to be purely comedic and there are some serious parts. (It isn't fluff writing). The authors just have a witty writing style and they aren't afraid to poke fun at dyke culture. They interviewed over 100 women in preparation for this book (sex shop owners, ex-nuns, political activists, closeted teachers, sex workers, divorced lesbians, long-term couples, etc).
Highly educational, comedic review of lesbian existance.......1998-10-15
When I started reading this book, I could hardly set it down but for a moment. This book tells of a realistic lesbian existance in this world, much to many people's dismay. It is a multi-faceted approach that deals with a community of women--their lives, interests, and pasttimes. It is also a good book for resources of various sorts: musical, social, environmental, political, etc.
