If you're a fan or student of American TV, you must have this book, which provides descriptions of 5,400 series and their major participants from 1948 to 1995. The information is presented in alphabetical order in entries up to several pages long. Special broadcasts are also listed chronologically in an appendix. Thankfully, the index is comprehensive, so you can easily trace the mayfly-like flitting of stars, personalities, and lesser deities from show to show. And, I don't usually say this, but it's really a heck of a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Total Television.......2007-01-11

This reference is superb in it's completeness. Anything you want to know about any program broadcast from 1948-1996 is in this 1251 page book. The 88 page index of names of performers appearing during those years is unbelievable. It includes specials, miniseries and the top 20 rated shows for each of those years. I use this reference at least 2 to 3 times a week.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative.......2005-08-25

First, we might note that "... To the Present," in the book's title, means through late 1995. So nothing in the last ten years is included. For years, I have enjoyed "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1946-Present" by Brooks and Marsh. I prefer the format of the Brooks and Marsh book to that of the NcNeil book--e.g., the cast is in list form, which makes for easier and quicker reading; the showing time is also included. The chief advantage of the McNeil book is that it includes daytime TV, which the Brooks and Marsh book does not.

4 out of 5 stars Exhaustive and necessary.......2005-06-02

Where this book is not as easy to use as Brooks and Marsh's "Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows"(see my review for this one), it offers more-as far as the addition of daytime shows and more explanation of the entries. I like the other guide mainly because it's a good quick reference for prime time. However, if I'm really interested in detail or, again, a daytime program-like some Saturday morning cartoon of my childhood-then this is the one to get. I have both books, actually-for reasons specified here.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate TV Reference.......2004-01-24

Alex McNeil's "Total Television" is the Mother of all TV reference volumes. If you can't find it here, it ain't worth knowin' about. How he was able to compile all this information covering 50+ years of TV is beyond me. Crack open this book at any page and you will be reading for hours, probably days.

5 out of 5 stars An impressive panorama of the TV era.......2000-12-19

Alex McNeill's "Total Television" is one of those reference works which is useful both for settling trivia arguments at parties and for helping those engaged in serious scholarly study of television programs and their impact upon popular culture. As of this review, "Total Television" is in its fourth edition.

The book is basically an alphabetical encyclopedia of thousands of television programs in every possible genre: dramas, sitcoms, game shows, cartoons, and more. Each entry lists the series' air dates, principal performers, and other relevant data.

In addition to the main body of encyclopedic entries, the book includes a wealth of supplemental features: lists of Emmy winners, a chronological gathering of one-shot specials, and more. Particularly interesting are the programming grids, which show the nightly lineups on each network for each night of the week. You can turn to a season (say, 1951-52) and see what choices the American TV viewer had each night! This feature is great for historians.

Although most of the entries on each series are brief, McNeill spends more time and space on certain series of outstanding impact. These extended articles on "All in the Family," "CBS Evening News," "Dallas," "The Ed Sullivan Show," and more are truly fascinating.

TV has been derided by many with such epithets as "the Boob Tube" and "The Idiot Box." On the other hand, it was praised in an episode of "The Simpsons" as "teacher, mother. . . secret lover." McNeill captures TV in all of its facets: from the depths of inanity to the heights of cultural significance. This book is a great achievement whose reputation, I believe, will increase with future editions.

2 out of 5 stars Out of date info.......2005-11-27

I should have paid attention to the date of publication as there was no info on triple-head multi-satellite LNB dish reflectors. The book has some useful information but mostly, it is a hodge-podge of fact sheets and PR photos from manufacturers. Not worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars Not a too much technical literature.......2002-09-11

When I decided to purchase this book , I was looking for a technical one , where I could learn about system characteristics , how does it work , installation , maintenance , etc. Chapter 6 , for example , has a lot of menu descriptions .Chapter 8 has around 40 pages describing DSS available programing. Those information are more suitable for the owner manual . This book is not updated , it mentions service providers that don't exist any more.Repeated information appears in different chapters .

1 out of 5 stars A waste of money-just republished manufacturer sheets.......1999-02-23

Chock-full of worthless promotional drivel, the author has the temerity to not only copy manufacturer spec sheets, but to copy them multiple times. Grab some DSS promo literature at the local Radio Shack... it'll be more up to date and free.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best of the 1960s autobiographies.......2001-01-21

It's a shame that this book is out of print, because it tells the story of one man's adventures in a unique time and place in a way that is less successfully done in other such books. Mungo was there at the creation, and he (usually) doesn't gloss over the failings of the hippies' original vision. The book is witty and opinionated, well-written and amusing - and if you're interested in the 1960s you should seek out copies in your nearby library or other such repository.

Mungo's life during those intense years covered in the book (which is circa 1965 through about 1971) traced nearly the entire stereotpical path of the 1960s hippie: from the Haight to political action in Washington and elsewhere (as a member of the Liberation News Service), to a comically unsuccessful stand as a back-to-the-lander communitarian, to a wandering journey to the 'sources of enlightenment' in Asia. The book shows just how it was possible to become entirely burnt out with innovation in just a six or seven year period, and illustrates well the trajectory of the 1960s, from ideal to disillusion to acceptance.

And it's well-written.

very effective, simple, but interesting the book gives a complete insight in directing. It is really difficult to find such a complete book, I found it a great book.

5 out of 5 stars What a director needs to know besides "attitude" and how to yell, "Action!".......2006-09-07

There's nothing wrong with reading interviews with master film directors, but they rarely give you the practical, hands-on information you need for becoming a professional director. Tom Kingdon's book is one of the only books that guides you through the steps and skills a director needs to know to take a script through to the final cut. I'm a professional documentary filmmaker, script writer and production teacher in a major media arts college, and in over twenty years of teaching, this is the first time I've assigned a directing text.

So by all means, study the words and works of Hitchcock, Kazan, Scorcese et al, but don't expect them to teach you how to break down a script or rehearse actors or many of the myriad tasks and procedures essential to being a real director.

2 out of 5 stars ...wow.......2006-07-11

It is my opinion that the only books on filmmaking that should be read and utilised are the books which are written by people who know what they're talking about. This is a book on filmmaking by a man who has never made a film! I've always found that to be ridiculous. The types of film books I read are mostly interview books, because you are getting the information straight from the source. Also, there are many books wwritten by actual award-winning, famous directors. For example, MAKING MOVIES, by Sidney Lumet. As far as interview books, you have what I call the "big four," being CONVERSATIONS WITH WILDER (Cameron Crowe), HITCHCOCK (Francois Truffaut), THIS IS ORSON WELLES (Peter Bogdonavich) and, in my opinion the best, KAZAN: THE MASTER DIRECTOR DISCUSSES HIS FILMS (Jeff Young). These are actual directors speaking about the craft. Wouldn't it be better to read books on directing from actual directors? But, its up to you. It's your choice. Learn the craft from masters like Hitchcock, Kazan, Welles, or Wilder, or you can learn from Tom Kingdon.

2 out of 5 stars Not an extremly good book.......2003-01-14

For people who have seen the japanese version of dbz/gt they wont be very pleased with this book nice try but needs a lot more work.

2 out of 5 stars A nice try, but much work is needed........2002-11-19

As a previous viewer stated, this really is nothing more than a glorified magazine.I've gone throuh it, cover-to-cover, and I'm wondering if these people have actually SEEN dragonball z. There are numerous problems with it. Errors, mispellings, innaccurate information.

Let's start with the errors. I'm convinced that the authors are little more than American DBZ viewers who have seen a Japanese episode once or twice. The information looks like it was copied directly from a website, complete with mispellings and all. The "biographies" are short, and rarely state anything meaningful or interesting ("Bra is the daughter of Vegeta and Bulma"). Yet another problem : Is it just me, or do poser magazines struggle to get real images? Numerous (100+) of the images in this book are terrible screenshots that are blurry, fuzzy, or grainy (Many so terrible you can hardly make out what it's a picture of).

The synopsis of Dragonball/Dragonball Z/Dragonball GT is not very good either. The author's have a rather snobby view of American fans and a high view of themselves who have, quote, "Seen the REAL version [of DBZ]". Pojo, get off of it. Not even the card game guide is good, with poor strategies and being very outdated. I'm not even gonna start on the pathetic 3-D images thing.

That said, I really do praise Pojo for trying. It's much better than anything Becket or some other magazine company has tried to put out. However, hopefully they will revise it, knowing that DBZ fans are one of the most difficult to please.

Here's the bottom line, for the type of people who would spend $9 on a magazine, I think they will be very pleased. Kids/Teens who are fans of the English version of Dragon Ball Z and are not picky about tiny details will be satisfied. I'm just warning those would consider this a valid source for information. In short, information accurate enough to satisfy those who don't know better, but not on par with some of the stuff that can be found on the internet.

5 out of 5 stars I'm now know Every Thing About DragonBall Z!.......2002-10-16

I thought I knew a lot about DBZ before I bought this book, Boy was I wrong! This book has over 300 Biographies! I now know every one from Unreleased DBZ movies and Characters from DBGT! I knew who Majin Buu was before two years ago! My friends were jealous! Get this book! Make your friends green (like Piccolo!)With Envy! I paid the hefty price from a local book store. Buy it, you won't be disapointed! Oh Yeah there's a funny section about who would should do a DBZ live action movie, about wich Actors should play them!

5 out of 5 stars Simple thoughts........2004-03-02

In my opinion and after reading reviews everybody misunderstood the film and what it really wanted to say.It was not about DiCaprio and his beautiful face, nor about pure art but 2 poets who were nothing but "true messangers".If you remember Rimbaud did not care about sharing his poetry, took it seriously though but just as long as his heart felt it was necessery. This film that I have seen was magnificent.A total love story between 2 people who lived in an era that did not accept same sex relationships, nor desertion and again 2 people who did not care about the rest of the world.Rimbaud was born a genius knowing what he wanted.I loved the way DiCaprio inpersonated him.It took me back right in the 18th.century.Also I consider it an excellent piece of work.Never thought that anyone would complain about it.Especially because we can't ask them how it all happned.:-))))

4 out of 5 stars Stunning Screenplay.......2001-06-29

Without seeing the actual film, I was stunned by the screenplay. Not only are the words captivating and true to poets Rimbaud and Verlaine but the actual film directions are provocative and insightful. The entire piece is beautifully complex. "The only unbearable thing is that nothing is unbearable" I'll be honest, I find it a damn shame to have DiCaprio playing the role only because I feel that the movie will be taken less seriously and Rimbaud will forever be a teen dream in the minds of many.

1 out of 5 stars Redundant Bordom.......2000-09-10

Anyone who idolizes Dicaprio should not be allowed to read Rimbaud. In all actuallity, this book(like the movie) was uninformitive and dull. It focuses more on Verlaines psychology than Rimbauds--and as we all know, Verlaine was an ugly man. Im sick of hearing about this piece, it was lame. I only pray that all the teenie boppers of the world don't start reading Rimbaud since they love Dicaprio so much---it might actually give them a glimpse of what real life is like, and we wouldn't want to upset there little minds...now would we?

1 out of 5 stars Sheesh!.......1999-08-14

What a pretentious piece of garbage, both the screenplay and the movie itself. One is better served by reading Rimbaud's poems themselves. If you've never read Rimbaud, please do yourself a favor and stay away from the movie and screenplay. Stick with the poems.

5 out of 5 stars Love has to be reinvented........1998-07-21

As a matter of fact I did not read this book, but I watch the movie and loved it. The only thing that drove me to watch the movie is only because Leo is my idol, BUT!--after the movie I was very curious about Arthur Rimbaud and I found some information about him and tried to read "A season in Hell", and I was totally FASCINATED by his works! He truly IS the defination of a genius!!!!!!! I love his writing style, his thoughts, and his intelligence.......At 18 he wrote his last piece of work, "A Season in Hell", and I think it's the BEST one of all...It's perhaps the most rebelious, thought-provoking work I've ever read.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars I really liked it........2002-11-27

I think some of the people reviewing this book are being overly mean.

What are you looking for out of a book on Gundam Wing?

    Me?

    I was looking for:

Bios of character w/photos - Yep. They're there. One photo's wrong but who cares? That's the artists fault. ;)

Bios of Gundams w/photos - they are here too

History & Info on Gundam. Yep, that's here. There's a very cool Timeline with great information about all the Gundam series. Colin Liu wrote a really cool story about "20 Years of Gundam". It's over 30 pages long, and tells you about all the Gundam Storylines.

Gundam Wing Episode Guide - Got it.

Modeling?? - CT Chin has a nice piece on Gundam Modeling with images of models. This is like 15 pages.

And there's a lot of other stuff in this book too. The 3D is kind of cheesy, but the rest of the book is fun.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the G Wing newbie! Unless you just want the pics.......2002-08-11

I bought it mostly for the pics, even though Sally Po really is listed as being Noin in 1 pic with a real Noin pic on the next page. They have lots of typos, incorrect spelling of names & relationships. I think Dorothy is a distant cousin of some sort to Treize & if Dermail was Treize's brother well Dermail's parents must have been very fertile geriatrics to have a son old enough to be Dorothy's grandfather & also be the parents of a 20 to 23 year old man [I forget if Treize was 20, 21 or 23 in the series, but even the older characters were usually in their late teens]. I found Wufei's bio to be very incorrect & the other pilots data wasn't always correct either. If you want accurate Gundam Wing info buy something else or surf fan sites, the fan sites are usually obsessively correct if at all possible. It's a very good thing that they labelled this as an Unofficial GW book, because if this was an official book they could probably be repremanded for falsehoods or something. If you don't expect to much get it, otherwise save your money & get something else on GW instead, the GW: Tech Manual isn't too bad although that has a few goofs too, doesn't anyone know how to correctly spell Tsubarov's name for heaven's sake?!?!

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK ISNT WORTH IT!.......2002-07-14

Please dont think for a second that you might want this book! Its information is tottally wrong! Names are [messed] up, family relations dont even make sense, the episode guide was 44% wrong, very biast and inncorrect character reveiws. Dont belive the other reviews on this page saying [stuff] like ''I know every character like someone in my family!'' or the really funny one ''this book was really helpfull.'' If you wanna learn something correct and really cool go to some fan sites .... Then you'll find some helpfull info.

    1 out of 5 stars HAHA..........2002-03-14

Easily put, this book IS NOT WORTH ANYTHING!!! All the information is wrong, and they even mistaken Noir's picture with Sally! Umm....EXCUSE ME?!?! Isn't there enough different between the two to realize they're two different people? Everything about this book is ENTIRELY made up!!! The people who wrote this book either never watched the anime or just decided to pick an anime off the top of their heads and start lying about it...Other than that, DO NOT, AND I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Hahahaha!.......2002-03-06

The only reason I got this book is for the many pictures. Most of the information is incorrect as a 12 year old reader from Millbury, OH said. When it says "Unofficial", they really mean "We made this up". The only nice stuff about this book is the pictures from Universal Century and the modeling section written by C.T. (Core) Chin of www.newtype-asylum.com. Definatly a site to check out. Anyways, I am gonna wrap this up with: If your new to Gundam Wing and looking for some great information, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. But if your looking for some nice pictures from UC then I would pick this book up...

1 out of 5 stars The Downfall Of Western Civilization........2005-08-01

Well, maybe that's taking it a little far, but I think you catch my drift.

Ah, 1999. I was coming of age, preparing to graduate eighth grade that coming June and to start high school. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was ABC's cash cow, the no-talent neanderthal Fred Durst was still popular, and, of course, millions of giggly kids tuned in to a popular MTV show called "Total Request Live". The premise of the show would be to allow the aforementioned giggly kids to vote for a certain music video, and try to get it to the coveted #1 spot. Sounds good, right? Well... the videos were mostly of the brainless pop genre. The clientele were mostly over-excitable pre-teen girls. And the host, Carson "Carsick" Daly, was about as exciting and interesting as a sack of wet diapers.

Did I watch? Okay, you got me, I'll admit I watched on occasion, hoping that the Beastie Boys, Korn, or Limp Bizkit would be on (I was 13 too... I still kinda like the Beasties though, and Korn's "Word Up" is cool). Even in retrospect, it wasn't that cool. I remember one time they literally showed about seven seconds of "Intergalactic". It then cut to Carsick, prompting me to yell to the TV, "I HATE YOU CARSON!" I never watched another god-forsaken TRL episode, and my brain cells still thank me for that to this very day!

But the real problem lay in the usual TRL fare. Most of it, as you all probably know, consisted of boy bands and pop tarts getting tons of airtime, and, of course, the less-than-intellegent kids on the street, screaming their lungs out just because "OMGOMGOMG!!! IT'S CARSON!!!!! I'M GONNA BE ON TV FOR TWO SECONDS!!! EEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" Lest we forget the geniuses paraded on camera during the actual videos' run. "OH MY GOD, okay, like I wanna like request the BACKSTREET BOYS because they are like SOOO CUUUUUUUTEEEE!! EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" Oh yeah, and the e-mails scrolled across the bottom of the screen. "OMGO)MMGOMG, lyk,i wanna reqwezt nsync bcz justin ais lyk ssoooo HAWTT!!!! - Buffy, 14" Talk about lowest common denominator... (Hey, you wanna hear something funny? I heard some moron from my high school was crying because she couldn't get on the show! HAHAHA! Sad or what?)

Sure, there was an option to request your OWN video, but I don't think one vote for Pantera would make it because it would simply get lost in a sea of the votes of shrieking tweens for their fluffy pop "muzik".

I think this stupid show is still on, but thankfully it's no longer popular. Even Carsick was smart enough to jump ship! Yes, folks, this was surely a very low point of an already dismal period (1999-2001ish). But thankfully, we can pretty much put this one behind us.

All the former teenyboppers who love Carson can now bombadeer me with unhelpful votes. Thanks for reading my wacky diatribe.

TRL makes you feel like you're right there on the set with Carson. Makes you realize how cool and smart (but totally normal) everyone on the show is. It all looks so easy, but this book made me realize how much work goes into TRL, but also how much fun they have making it.
