This unbelievable autobiography explores the rebellious lives of four of the most influential icons in American rock history.

rico. Their scuffles involved everyone from Axl Rose to 2LiveCrew. Their hobbies have included collecting automatic weapons, cultivating long arrest records, pushing the envelope of conceivable drug abuse, and dreaming up backstage antics that would make Ozzy Osbourne blanch with modesty.
Provocatively written and brilliantly designed, this book includes over 100 photos, many never before published, for the most exciting and insightful look ever into the Crue.

Best book I've ever read!!!.......2007-09-30
Art is a piece of work that moves you & this book did. I laughed, I was disgusted, I even cried. This is twenty years of a band strugling though fights, overdoses, suicide attempts, mariages, deaths, prison (it's all here!). I love how the story is told by different people so you can hearing everybody's version of what happened (crazy how everybody remebers things differently). You get to hear what happened behind closed doors & what wasn't in the tabloids. It truly was an awesome read - very hard to put down!
Great book.......2007-09-18
From page one your are on a journey, as told by each memeber of the band, from the worst part of L.A. and Motley Crue's beginnings, to their rise to super stardom in the world of rock and roll. I was never much of a Crue fan when they were in their prime, but as I got older, I started to like their music and enjoyed reading about their beginning and the typical crazy road that most rock stars take.
Anazing !!.......2007-09-18
I loved the book the most amazing thing i have ever read inmy life !!!
Suprisingly great book.......2007-09-17
You will wet your pants laughing within the first 5 pages. I am half way through the book and learning alot about the band and Nikki Sixx himself. There is alot people do not know. Can't wait to finish the rest.
Great book, but just a little over-embelished........2007-09-13
This book is a FUN read and I have no doubt that for the most part things went down exactly as described. However I've also read Neil Strauss' other books and while a brilliant writer, he tend to make things larger than life and more polished than they really were (read the Game especially for examples of this.) Some things in the book seem a little too "neatly" described and he glosses over some of the more negative aspects of Motley Crue (And I grew up with them and obsessively followed their press since I was in middle school.)
But definitely a thumbs up. Look forward to reading Nikki's new book for comparison.

THE Who's TOMMY.......2005-09-30
Admitting I'm a bit biased is putting it lightly. This was one of the first albums I purchased as a child and one of the first CD's I purchased as a young adult.
Paul McCartney becomes a Knight!
John Lennon's a National (or international) Hero!
And then The Who's Tommy becomes a Tony Award winning Show!
Even with Bush as our President, I still have faith in mankind.
The book is awsome! It not only is a script, but a great photo album and documentery. If I had one dissapointment, it was that the free CD with in it had only one song. But, there was a reason for that, and it was free!
I not only read it immediatly, but Tommy as entered my travelling discs once again. And I am listening to it regularly.
On a side note... I coach the local High Schools Speech Team and talk to the student regularly about music and not just literature. I was shocked how many music lovers that know all classic rock and modern rock that had never heard on Tommy.
Pete Townshend wrote over 35 years ago about a child who was verbally abused by his parents, sexually abused by a close relative and phycially abused by a cousin. Sound like most books, songs, movies and TV shows of today!
Sorry to rambel.
John M. Verteramo
What a show!!.......2003-11-05
This showis one amazing show and the book just make you love it even more! Unlike other shows, Tommy is just so real and is just an amzing thing to see. I saw it when a Summer Stock did it and wow, I saw every show! You have to get this book if you love Tommy! If you are young you better get your parents permission cause this show is preatty inapporpriate!!
A wonderful compaion to a spectacular theater experience.......1999-03-20
Although not currently in print, this is a must find for "Tommy" fans. Like the broadway soundtrak CD, it transports you to the magic behind the memory of a great broadway musical.
Big and Beautiful :Like queen Latifah!.......1996-11-16
It holds its own in a sea of musical theatre books:
"Phantom," "Les Miz," B&Beast" all have their own books;
none compare to this. The extra CD is a great bonus:
wonderful interviews w/ cast and crew (Not,like, the guy who
pulls the rope) If you're a Who fan, great sections on them, as well as a generally beautiful layout and wonderful pics. (I mean it, kids) It's woth the $$$ and is a great coffe table compliment!

Book Description
I am Tommy Lee, born Thomas Lee Bass in Athens, Greece, on October 3, 1962, and raised in a suburb of California by an American father and a Greek mother. At seventeen, I joined Mötley Crüe and we became one of the baddest-ass rock bands in history. We sold over 40 million albums, we wreaked havoc, we scared parents, and we titillated too many fathers' daughters. I've been married three times: once for just a few days to a Penthouse Pet, for seven years to Heather Locklear, and then for five years to Pamela Anderson, with whom I have two beautiful sons. I've gotten into a lot of fights and I've been to jail a few times.
But this book isn't your typical journey in a straight line from day one to day now. I'm more interested in revealing what's most important about my life, like how I cook my steaks; what I think of the tabloids, the truth, my ex-wives, my ex-band, my music; and what an innocent observer might find hanging around my house any given Sunday. You'll get plenty of facts and I'll tell you a story, but my real mission here is to paint you a picture of my life. I want to show you how my memories smell.
I'd like to get into it now, so please take your seats. I advise you to keep your arms and legs inside the car at all times. If you have a pacemaker, a heart condition, or if you are pregnant or too damn short to reach the safety bar, I ask that you turn back immediately. Those with weak stomachs, strict morals, or chronic indigestion should put the book down now. For the rest of you, there's one truth that's real across the board: What you send out is what you get back. Send out the good, people, and it will come back to you. There's another thing I've learned over the years, in court, in fights, and in arguments with people I love: There isn't one truth, there are many. This book is my truth.

Tommy Lee down to the knee.......2007-07-17
As it says in Chapter one, when his johnson is speaking to him, the only thing anyone really wants to know is how long it is and he doesn't tell. He does tell movingly about the day a little boy died in his pool but mostly to blame others. Lucky for him, the jury believed him, but he couldn't afford a lifeguard? Seems a litle easy for him, as does everything else in this book, like his affinity for "big girls," his luck at getting pilots who were coked out to land safely and generally, worshipping his Greek family, particularly his mom who must have loved the video and allegations from "Pamela" that he gave her hepatitis. As he's coaching people how to have sex while driving, you gotta love how the Lord protects drunks, as they always walk away from accident scenes. Tommy walks out of jail, head high, missing his friends, the cockroaches.

I bought this book for my girlfriend and she loved it, she read it super fast and loved every minute. She isn't the biggest Tommy fan but she really enjoyed the way the book was structured and Tommy's writing style. She is now making me and all her friends read it.

I am a big Motley Crue and Tommy Lee fan and I love to read. Unfortunately I only made it through the first few chapters---just not my thing, I guess!!! There is a few nice color pics which is why I am giving this book 2 stars.

Book Description
The "definitive and invaluable" (Los Angeles Times) biography of the legendary jazz giant Tommy Dorsey
Swing has never gone out of style. It was the music the Greatest Generation danced to--and went to war to. And no musician evokes the Big Band era more strikingly than Tommy Dorsey, whose soaring trombone play and hit tunes influenced popular music for a generation. Tommy Dorsey (1905-1956) led a rich and complex life. Beginning with his childhood in the coal mining towns of Pennsylvania, we follow the young trombonist's journey to fame and fortune during the Jazz Age. Tommy, with his brother Jimmy, created one of the most popular bands of the era and played with such giants as Bing Crosby and Glenn Miller. They also launched the career of a skinny young singer named Frank Sinatra. But Tommy's volcanic personality eventually split the band and Tommy went off on his own.
Drawing on exhaustive new research and scores of interviews with the musicians who knew him best, Levinson delves into Dorsey's famously eccentric lifestyle and his oversize appetite for drink, women, and perfection. The first biography on Dorsey in more than thirty years, Tommy Dorsey is a dazzling portrait of the Big Band's brightest star--his tumultuous life, his turbulent times, and the unforgettable music that made him a legend.
Customer Reviews:
An Eye For Talent, by Drew Savage, Author and Swing Era Enthusiast.......2007-05-31
This is a good book, well written and with excellent content. As an enthusiast of the Swing Era I appreciated the factual content, which gave me far more information than any other source I've read, providing a hitherto unavailable cross-reference to what has been published before.
As a presenter and author, I enjoyed the insights into the man, his music and the period in general, knowing they would enliven and enrich audience participation. I am too young to have been there 'first time around,' or even to have had the good fortune to see most of the performers, even those who enjoyed career longevity. Having facts avaulable from more than one source is therefore crucial to me, and this book does a great job in providing a primary source and information resource.
Finally, I must take issue with one of the comments made in an earlier review, that the R&B and Rock and Roll era passed Tommy Dorsey by. Au contraire, we have 'TD' to thank for first introducing Elvis Presley to the nation on TV, in the Jackie Gleason sponsored 'Stage Show', and weeks before Ed Sullivan apparently 'discovered' Mr. Presley.
When you add to that Dorsey's promotion and nurturing of Frank Sinatra, he was responsible for bringing to the nation's attention two out of four of the most influential singers of the last century. (The other two being Al Jolson and Bing Crosby.)
When you add to this the roster of other great singers (Connie Haines, Jo Stafford, Dick Haymes for example), arrangers (Nelson Riddle, Sy Oliver) and musicians(just too many to list here!!) who passed through the ranks of his Orchestra, the title of 'Talent Spotter Extraordinaire' seems highly appropriate.
Only one mistake.......2007-04-04
I read all nine reviews, & I totally agree that this was the most fascinating book I've ever read about the wonderful days of the "big bands". It seems interesting to learn that most of the successful big band leaders were not the easiest people to get along with. Perhaps being a strict disciplinarian with a short fuse just came with the territory. I read all nine reviews, & no one noticed the bit about Art Linkletter. On page 151, Levinson relates an incident involving Art, something that happened in 1942, saying that Art was a "very active" 93 year old at the time. When I saw & talked to Art at a dinner banquet in 1976, that would make him 127. I believe Art is still alive, though I'm not sure about this, & if so he's still lecturing about how to stay happy & fit as a senior citizen. Nonetheless, I loved this book. Jim O'Neil
A Good Biography.......2006-12-04
Although an icon of the big band era, there hasn't been an updated biography of Tommy Dorsey written in many years. It is based largely on some 180 interviews conducted mostly in the coal country where Dorsey grew up. This is excellent timing, as the people who knew and worked with Dorsey are all now becoming aged. Writers in the future will have to work from sources more distant.
Mr. Levinson has been in the entertainment business as an agent, freelance, writer, personal manager, publicist and more. This is his third book, with the first two being biographies of Harry James and Nelson Riddle. He is an accomplished biographer.
Tommy Dorsey, like many big name entertainers was a tower of strength, developing new forms of music that changed the way people lived. He worked with the big name entertainers of the time including Sinatra, Elvis, and of course his brother Jimmy. At the same time he had serious problems with drinking, drugs, and women which led him to death at the very early age of 51.
Mr. Levinson has done an excellent job of presenting both aspects of Dorsey's life.
TOOTIN' DORSEY'S HORN, GOOD AND BAD.......2006-11-06
Few musicians evoke the Big Band era more than Tommy Dorsey. With his soaring trombone playing and hit tunes, he left an indelible mark on American culture, yet few know that off stage, Dorsey's personal life was as fascinating as the music he created on stage. A man driven by his passion for women and drink as much as for music, Dorsey was a perfectionist who lived on overload. Peter Levinson's bio, drawn on exhaustive new research and scores of interviews with those who knew Dorsey best, takes us center stage and behind the scenes, toppling the swing era's icon sweet and mellow image and replacing it with a more truthful, multi-faceted portrait of a man of extreme excess. All the high and low notes Dorsey achieved are here. Play on!
An American idol, he was a musical Martha Stewart-like perfectionist who out-Trumped Donald when it came to firing people.......2006-04-12
One can have grown up loving Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra without having any idea of what was going on behind the scenes, what the fabled bandleader was really like. In Peter J. Levinson's illuminating and well-sourced book, "Tommy Dorsey: Livin' in a Great Big Way," the subject emerges as a man both with and ahead of his time: an American idol, he was a musical Martha Stewart-like perfectionist who out-Trumped Donald when it came to firing people. Some of the greatest names in jazz and popular music were hired, fired and later re-hired by Dorsey. Levinson does full justice to him, covering his music (danceable was the goal), his movies (MGM quality). his marriages (several, sometimes stormy), and his moods (subject to change without notice) There would be frequent eruptions, most often with his brother, rival and sometimes co-bandleader Jimmy Dorsey, and most significantly with his singing discovery Frank Sinatra. It was Dorsey's amazing breath control as a trombonist that Sinatra modeled his vocal technique after; it was Dorsey's character that he, knowingly or not, emulated. "Livin' in a Great Big Way" tells an engaging, well-rounded story of a complex figure who played beautifully, nurtured careers and largely influenced pop culture for two decades.

Tommy Tedesco was the most-recorded guitarist in the history of the music business. His four-decade career earned him a reputation among his peers as one of the world's best musicians, and his contributions have been instrumental in shaping the sound of popular music. This autobiography traces his career and includes many studio photos and quotes from some of the world's most famous musicians.
Customer Reviews:
good stories, poor editing.......2007-03-22
Lots of spelling errors mar this otherwise interesting collection of studio stories. Lenny Bruce's name is spelled Lennie and then once sentence later it's spelled properly. Mike Nesmith of the Monkees is constantly referred to as "Nesbett". Maybe that's what Tedesco remember's his name as, yet it would be better if there was a 'sic' after the name.
Good if you lived thru the 1960's.......2007-01-10
If you're a guitar player, it's an excellent book about a very interesting guy.

Womack's Knack for Storytelling Made This a Great Ride.......2007-01-29
Cheese Chronicles is a faced paced, funny, and event-driven journey through the life of a rock band. The story, on its own, pales in comparison with similar stories such as Rock Scully's 'Living With the Dead.' Womack doesn't show us Government Cheese as a hedonistic troupe by detailing sexual exploits or bragging about the volume of drugs ingested. In fact, no one even dies in the story. Therefore, unlike comparable books, the greatness of this one isn't attributed to the incredibility of the band's adventures. Instead, the book is a great read because of Womack's unique writing style, which allows us to feel the intensity of his experience.
Womack is always willing to sacrifice his ego for the sake of getting the story across accurately. He is brutally honest, self deprecating, and throughout, he's insistent on making the reader aware of the lousy state of the human condition. It is funny to read that Womack's apartment was broken into, but the burglars didn't take anything and in a sense that was insulting to him.
Also notable, is that Womack has a skill for being completely frank but yet still being a southern gentleman. In the book, most of the judgements he passes are on himself. If he has a beef with someone or something they did, he is quick to defend that person or try to offset his disclosures by mentioning something good about that person. He creates almost no villians in a book packed full of nights gone wrong.
At the time of this review, Womack's web site had a collection of songs on it in mp3 format available for download for free. Among those are some songs that are mentioned throughout the book and hearing them (while I was about half way through the book) enriched the stories.
I wish this book hadn't ended but that's part of the story's theme.
Amazing Cheese.......2002-06-27
Tommy Womack is a great writer! I too was a Cheesefan back in the day, but this book would be amazing even if I hadn't heard of them. I laughed, I cried...I could not put it down! Facinating and definitely a must read for any young bands out there.
Recommended for anyone with a rock & roll soul.......2001-12-11
This is the story representing the 1,000 bands who didn't make it for every one that did -- and I'd MUCH rather read about Government Cheese's failures than N'Sync's successes.
Tommy is a fabulous musician, a clever writer and funny as hell. I grew up near where he did and have never read a more accurate expression of wanting to be a rocker soooo badly in a place that has NO desire to be rocked, thank you very much. Tommy has never grown out of the pure fun of jumping on your bed playing your tennis racket to "Surrender" or air-drumming Peter Criss' "God of Thunder" solo on Alive II. (Try it, I don't care if you're a 42-year-old accountant with a minivan. It will keep you young.)
I once chased Tommy across a bar to praise his book with beer-induced enthusiasm. The next day I sent a letter apologizing and received a reply that still hangs on my wall: "I'll accept no apologies for drunken behavior. I heartily endorse it."
You could read this book 50 times and never tire of it.
You had to be there..........2001-06-13
I used to go see this rock and roll band you've never heard of when they played my Middle Tennessee college town. Although none of them would ever remember me, I've actually met and spoken with them on a couple of different occasions. So, reading this book was like getting in on all the shows I missed. For me, it was a funny bit of nostalgia. For those of you who've never heard of Government Cheese or heard their music...well, that's a real shame.
An essential read for anyone and everyone!.......1999-07-21
Tommy Womack's excellent book, Cheese Chronicles, is an essential read for anyone interested in the music business. The book is hilarious and at the same time, it provides a gritty look at what it's really like to be in a rock band. I cannot say enough good things about this book. BUY IT AND READ IT!

Nine Inch Nails are the forerunners of the nu metal genre, having defined industrial rock in the 1990s. From the release of the acclaimed Pretty Hate Machine through its darker, multi-platinum sequels, they have sold over 10 million albums worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
Parts of it may bug the hell out of you.......2007-01-03
Nine Inch Nails is Tommy Udo's biography about the band with the same name and its founder Trent Reznor, beginning with the birth of electronic music long before Mr. Reznor came along, his musical trials and errors before the release of Pretty Hate Machine, all the way up to double album The Fragile and DVD And All That Might Have Been which came out a few years ago. Udo himself is a fan, which isn't much of a surprise, I guess. Still, he's not a fanatic, but rather is of the opinion that Reznor and his ideas have had such an important part in the history of music that he deserves to have a book written about him.
And he's right, of course. One may love or hate Reznor's contributions to the world of music, but no one can dispute the fact that he's had an enormous impact and has been, and still is, a huge influence on countless musicians all over the world.
Still, Nine Inch Nails feels more like a summary than a biography.
Reznor isn't the one with the longest career in the music business, but throughout the 232 pages of the book Udo nonetheless fails to get into any kind of depth when it comes to Reznor and his music. In all fairness it should be mentioned that Udo never claims to have written the ultimate biography, which is quite fortunate, because then the end result would have been truly horrible, instead of how it is right now: semi-bad.
A freakishly large part of the text is made up of quotes from different magazines, and more or less every single one of these quotes have one or more errors or typos that not even an apprentice proof-reader should ever have missed. The continuous use of various quotes do result in one getting the feeling that Udo really doesn't have any personal opinions about Reznor and his music and instead simply relies on what other believe. It really does give the appearance of being the easy way out, and the innumerable typos and grammatical errors soon become a massive nuisance.
Udo might be the most passionate fan out there, but passion doesn't always automatically lead to great results.
is a book that many fans might appreciate, but the lack of depth is sure to piss many people off, too. I wasn't looking for anything but an overview, so to me it was OK. But still far from great.
Horrible...just simple horrible........2004-11-12
Do not read this book at all. It is very horrible and within the first couple chapters I felt like burning it. It is very in accurate and is not worth a single dollar.
More about things NIN related, then actually about NIN.......2003-04-02
I bought this book in my continual search for information on my favorite band, Nine Inch Nails. And this book certainly had a lot of information to provide me with. However, the format used almost got to the point of being annoying.
What this book does it introduce a subject (the production of Pretty Hate Machine for example), mention that it heavily used synthesizers, then go into the history of synthesizers. After 2 pages, then it gets back to the topic at hand. And while sometimes I was intrigued by the information provided (say, for FLOOD), most times it was something that either didn't need to be mentioned in a book about Trent Reznor, or could be in a book about the industrial music movement.
I used the same method in my senior composition class to pad papers, but in this case it wasn't warranted.
Come to think of it, the book tries at times to be an all encompassing encyclopedia of industrial music, which isn't why I bought it at all. I suppose I'm more knowledgeable about it because of the information provided, but it wasn't by choice.
The information about NIN is fascinating, and ends with the recording of their live album "And All That Could Have Been." Overall, I liked the book, but could have lived without the extraneous information about everything under the sun.
Good, yet get more information.......2003-03-04
I wouldn't say I am a fanatic Nin fan but a really really big fan. Tommy Udo wrote a great book it gives a lot of good information and goes over the history pretty well. But He made a mistake. There is a part in one of the first chapters where he is explaing the albums. And he said that the Live Album was called And All That Might Have Been. When in fact it is titled And All That Could Have Been. And he takes quotes out of context. Where one time he says that Trent Said. "I see that I am saving Rock n' Roll. billy Corgan failed, now it's all up to me." He said that in this context "people are saying that I see that I am saving Rock n' Roll, Billy Corgan Failed, so it's up to me whenI really don't ever like Rock that much". Great book though, he just needs to leave thigns the way they are.
