5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-09-30

this was a very good book. i like all of the suspense and excitment in the story. i don't like what happens to Stonefur, but i like the end and how everything turns out. i don't want the original series to end. It will be hard to see Fireheart as the leader, and not having him be the main character. the next book that is abuot him is firestar's quest, which comes after the new prophecy #6. I am reading book #2 in the new prophecy. i can tell you that all of the warrios books are good

5 out of 5 stars The dark book.......2007-08-26

This book was, as the title implies, a darker read. It was sad and at times hard to read but it was still a good page turner and I really liked it though at times it was hard to see my favorite characters in such bad situations. But that is perhaps the charm of the book. There is no skimping on the bad things that can happen in life, but somehow things always do work out in the end and perhaps I read this one faster than usual so I could get the characters to a better place in their lives. A great finish to a wonderful first series.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book In The Series.......2007-07-23

5 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this series........2007-06-05

I think warrior cats is a very good series. Most of it is not predictable until the very end, but it is still good. It is about a house cat called Rusty who journeys into the forest and joins ThunderClan, to help them survive. In the end he becomes clan leader with the name Firestar. I also think it has brilliant description. I recommend this series to people who like fighting and cats!

5 out of 5 stars Great, Surprising, and Suspencefull.......2007-06-04

In this book of Hunter's amazing series, Warriors, Fireheart becomes Firestar after Bluestar's death. He learns of a dangerous Clan outside of the four Clan's that rule the forest. It could mean the distruction of all the Clans or it could mean another treachery of Tigerclaw's. Or both.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

The last Magic Tree House that I read was Hour of the Olympics. I liked it because it had a lot of interesting facts about the early olympics. I thought it was funny that some people wore armor when they ran in races! I suggest that you read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Take An Hour And Read This Book.......2003-11-12

The book you are going to read about is called Hour of the Olympics. Mary Pope Osborne wrote it and she is a great writer. This story is about the first Olympic game. The two main characters are named Jack and Annie. This book comes from a series of books, so this is only one adventure. The problem in this story is that Jack and Annie are at the first Olympics and no girls are allowed. Annie sneaks in and gets caught. Can Jack get her out of this mess? To find out you will have to read Hour of the Olympics.

My 8 year old grandson loves this book that we got him for Christmas. He works on it all the time. Would like more Canadian stuff in it but not really a huge problem. Would buy this for the others when they are older.

The Secret Hour is a compelling tale of dark secrets, midnight romance, eerie creatures, courage, destiny, and unexpected peril.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Midnighters: The Secret Hour.......2007-10-04

Scott Westerfeld has a pretty interesting mind, coming up with unique books. I adore the Uglies series, and I like the first book of this trilogy too. It's really interesting to see a time that nobody else knows of, even if it's completely fictional. It seems like this book has all the elements of a good YA novel. But to me it was lacking. Maybe I had high expectations because of how much I loved Uglies. Either way, I'm not in too big of a hurry to read the second one. Maybe if I can get ahold of it easily I will, but I'm not going to go out of my way to read it.

3 out of 5 stars another interesting concept from scott westerfield.......2007-07-12

Not as good as the Uglies trilogy, but a new unique concept. INteresting unusual plot line, fast-paced, good characters. I'll definitely be reading the next one in the series

3 out of 5 stars Midnighters.......2007-05-18

Being born at midnight changed the rest of her life more than she could've ever imagined. Jessica Day, who recently moved to Bixby, Oklahoma, started having weird "dreams" when she came. Her first one happened when she woke up at the stroke of midnight and everything was frozen still. She ventures outside and the raindrops looked like diamonds in the sky until she touched it and they fell. She felt as if this experience was magical, but didn't know whether it was a dream or reality. The thing that let her know it was real was when she woke up and her sweatshirt that she had been wearing was soaking wet. The next day at school she found out that there were three others in her school that had this power to: Rex, Dess, and Melissa. And they had found out that she had because they had felt someone else while they were venturing around. They called themselves the midnighters. The time that took place during midnight was called blue time and it was an hour long that time was stopped and only people who were born at midnight could experience it. But also in blue time there were things that the midnighters had to overcome such as darklings and slithers. While on a trip in midnight she see's Jonathan, a boy from he school, and he tells her that he is a midnighter too and that the others don't really like him. In the end, they all had to come together and help Jessica find her power, which is something that each of them has, and she finds out that she is the flame bringer and the one who beings new technology to the blue time which scares the slithers and darklings away. I would recommend this book to middle school students who enjoy reading sci-fi genre books with a everyday, relatable, twist to them.

The book had an everyday element to it, so it wasn't just being midnight all of the time. It showed how they had just recently moved to the town and how bratty her sister Beth had been acting about the situation. It also told about how Jessica had to make new friends and find a place to sit at lunch and decide who she wanted to be friends with. And it the everyday things also played into the sci-fi elements because when she was invited to a party by a girl named Constanza, she excepted because it put her closer to the spot that she had to be to defeat the darklings at midnight.

I enjoyed the fact that everyone who was a midnighter had their own specific power that they had to come together and help Jessica find hers. Dess was the mathematician, and had all kinds of riddle's, with Bixby, Oklahoma and the number thirteen. Melissa has the power of being able to be a psychic and she was able to read minds throughout blue time. And Rex was the lore reader, he put everything together and figured out why they were actually there and their initial purpose.

Midnighters by Scott Westerfield was a good science fiction book. I liked the fact the that world was to them for an hour out of the day, and that it wasn't just easy, they had to get through trials and tribulations too. And that there were real-life consequences to too. Because in Bixby there is a curfew and it is before blue time so if they don't make it home before it is over, then the police will catch them, which is what happened to Jonathan when he and Jessica were walking home from being out. And also that the scars and things from their battles with the darklings and slithers still remain on their bodies and they have to cover it up or everyone will find out about them.

This book was a sci-fi book that had an everyday, relatable, twist to it and that would be enjoyed by middle school students. I enjoyed that it mixed the element of real life and love life with an totally different element. And the fact that no one but them new about it and it became a world for them and exclusively for them!

4 out of 5 stars The Secret Hour.......2007-05-18

~It was exactly 12 o'clock when Jess woke up after the pouring rain suddenly stopped. She looked outside her window and saw thousands upon thousands of individual little diamonds shimmering in the almost purple moon light. They were all rain droplets that were frozen in the midnight air. Jessica just moved into the little town of Bixby where she finds out that she is a midnighter, a person who has an extra hour at the stroke of midnight because they were born right at the stroke of midnight. Jess also finds out that the very ancient and evil slithers and darklings, the animals that haunt the dark hour, want to kill her. There are some very special things about the secret hour; Bixby is the only known place that there is an extra hour. No human inventions can be used, for example, no cars, no electricity, no nothing. The darklings and the slithers haven't bothered the old midnighters until Jessica moved into town and now they are everywhere. The four other midnighters all have special powers that enable them to defend themselves from the slithers, but the teens can't figure out what Jess's power is, but they do know that the slithers want her dead...very badly. During this whole book Jessica is running from the slithers and the darklings and it isn't till the end that she finds out that she has the power to bring human inventions into the secret hour, when she shines a flashlight onto the slithers and burns them all. This book was very well written and I recommend it to all teens who like science fiction and action.
~This book is packed with action. An example is when Jess leaves her house the second time that she woke up in the secret hour, a very old darkling, deiquised as a slither tried to kill Jessica. For instance, when Jessica and Dess are fighting the slithers at her house, it takes them right before the secret hour was up to finish burning them all. Also when Rex and Dess and Jess go to the sacred spot to find out what Jessicas powers were, millions of slithers were in their way so there was a huge battle then.
~Midnighters is also filled with learning how to make new friends in a new environment. An example is when Jess moves to Bixby she meets a girl named Constance who is very popular and rich, Constance immediately befriends Jess. The realasonship that Jess has with the other midnighters is forced because they have to spend an hour together every day. Also when Jess and her sister fight when she finds Jess getting ready to leave at midnight, but after Jess confides in her they return to the friends that they used to be before they moved to Bixby.
~This book had a lot of suspense. For instance, when Jess is trying to figure out her special power, she tried many different things to find out her power. An example is when Dess tried to find out if Jess was a polymath, but she found out quickly that she wasn't. Also when Rex tried to find out if Jess was a seer, by asking her if any of the arrows had a better focus that another, and she said they didn't.
~I enjoyed this book very much and I recommend it to any teens who like suspense and science fiction. This book made it very easy to relate to Jess because she was taking all advance courses because her mother wanted her too.

5 out of 5 stars Great lit circle book.......2007-05-03

I am a 7th grade reading teacher who doesn't particularly enjoy fantasy or science fiction. I LOVED this book and purchased a set to use in my literature circles with my students. They loved it. What really makes it great is that there are 2 more books in the series, so you've hooked your students, and hopefully, they will continue to read the series. Students at this level relate to being different as being a negative thing. They enjoy seeing these outcasts have an advantage over all the kids who make fun of them and all of the kids that they don't fit in with.

My daughter got me hooked on this series and I was surprised at the great writing.

5 out of 5 stars the best of the series ... so far.......2006-07-12

I love this book , and I love the character Jesse. This book is nothing but nonstop action and thrills , and some parts are so sad , and how Suze does to get Jesse back is certainly is unexpected. Although the new character Paul is very intriguing and I like his character , I can't wait to read the next book to find out about him.And I love the ending . Meg cabot really undone herself this time!

5 out of 5 stars The Mediator .......2006-04-24

The fourth book of the series The Mediator did not fail to deliver a great and wonderful thrill. Susannah is still trying to live a normal teenage life without any ghosts interfering, besides Jesse her ghost friend that haunts her room. Susannah soon finds out its going to be harder than she thought, when she discovers a young boy who is a mediator just like herself. Things also get worse when she discovers that the young kid's brother Paul has a crush on Susannah.
While she is trying to deal with all this stuff, her stepbrothers accidentally dig up Jesse's dead body in their backyard. Since Jesse's body was discovered Jesse has no reason to stick around in the real world and gets sent to the ghost world. Now Susannah wants to bring Jesse back to the real world, but when Susannah finds out that Jesse was killed by his girlfriend many years ago, Jesse's girlfriend comes back from the dead to try to stop Susannah from finding out anything else. How is Susannah going to get Jesse back and deal with everything that's going on at the same time? Read the book to find out
I loved this book this was the best book of the series so far, because it added new enemies that Susannah has to worry about. I liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes mystery and action books. I would also tell them to read the whole series first because they are all good books.

Reading The Eleventh Hour is like running a marathon: one finishes exhausted but satisfied. Graeme Base, creator of the popular Animalia, has crafted another intricately wrought, gorgeously illustrated picture book, this time a mystery in verse. When Horace the Elephant decides to throw himself a party for his 11th birthday, he never suspects a crime will be committed by lunchtime. Who has stolen the birthday feast? As with any good mystery, everyone is guilty until proven innocent. The proof lies in the myriad clues embedded in each glorious illustration. Young sleuths will delight in decoding the complex messages that pop up in unexpected places.

Graeme Base used the buildings he saw during his travels through Africa, Asia, and Europe to design and decorate Horace's fantastic house. Astute readers may recognize Roman cathedrals, Scottish palaces, and stone carvings from India. Best of all, secreted in these walls are cryptic messages in Egyptian hieroglyphics, anagrams, and even Morse code to challenge the perceptive and deductive abilities of any reader "of tender years or long in tooth." The Eleventh Hour is a brilliant, rigorous, creative romp that no child (or adult) should miss. (All Ages)

5 out of 5 stars Truly amazing and so much fun!.......2007-09-17

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend. I say that I read it, but really this is more like a book you do. What do you do? You solve the mystery of the poetic story by searching the detailed illustrations for clues. Some clues are more obvious than others, but most clues take real sleuthing to discover. I had so much fun with it, and after about two days of study, I came up with the answer, but there was still so much that I had overlooked. Thankfully, the author reveals all to you in a sealed section at the back of the book. I encourage you to resist seeking the answers until you've tried your hardest to find as many clues as you can. Even if you can't figure out the who dunnit, you will be exited with every clue you find, and will likely hear yourself exclaim, "Ah-ha!". This book is marketed to children but it takes a sharp mind to solve the mystery and discover the clues, so it is really better suited for teens and adults, but even small children will enjoy the story and the amazing pictures. I would give this book as a gift to anyone who enjoys a good brain teaser. So get out your magnifying glass, a notepad and pencil, and have fun!

5 out of 5 stars This is for Kids and Adults.......2007-07-02

The story is about Horace the elephant who has decided to celebrate his eleventh birthday, with 10 of his friends in the eleventh month (November) on the eleventh day. After all have arrived the eleven characters participate in eleven games in anticipation of a birthday feast at the eleventh hour of the day. Thus the title of the book - The Eleventh Hour. The day is filled with musical activities, indoor/outdoor games, board games, cards, party games and more. The eleventh hour arrives disappointing the guests with the unexpected disappearance of their birthday feast. Apparently a theft perpetrated by one of the invited guests. Horace saves the day by serving healthy whole wheat sandwiches to all and the birthday cake remains because it had been stored away from the feast. With everyone enjoying the birthday cake, the story closes with a happy ending.

However, this is where one story ends and other mysteries begin. On each page of the book there are puzzles to be solved and clues to lead a more intrepid reader along the trail to the thief of the birthday feast.

I'm a freshman in college and I still love this book. My third grade class room had a set but we were NOT allowed to open the pages in the back! The entire class spent lots of time pouring over the sumptuous pictures and trying to spot each and every hidden...well, I won't give it away. I came across the book in a bookstore recently and bought it immediately because I had such fond memories. Do yourself or your kid a huge favor and buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing graphics, imaginative rhymes, compelling overall --.......2007-03-01

-- And it's a "kids book"!!!

I'm 26 now, but I remember the astonishment and awe I first felt borrowing this book from my 5th grade class's "library" when I was 10 years old. Back then, I gave up after 4 hours of not being able to figure anything at all out and had to look in the Sooper Sikret Section, but this time around, I got a few more of the clues on my own before having to look up the Section :P

A great book to sate the inquisitive mind of a bright child, honestly. Highly recommended!

Horace the elephant is inviting his animal friends over for his
eleventh birthday. Horace has prepared a magnificent feast for he and his friends to enjoy. But while they are romping outside, Horace's food has mysteriously disappeared. Which animal stole the food? Base's lush artwork contains cleverly hidden clues to help the reader solve this mystery. An excellent choice for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars simply the best .......2007-06-12

I bought four Kumon workbooks for my 5 year old's kindergarten. This will be our first year homeschooling. I totally love the Kumon method. The workbooks introduce the information in a highly incremental way. The layout of the pages is very simple and consistant. I just love this workbook and am confident that it will work really well for us.

5 out of 5 stars Great workbooks! .......2006-11-07

This is a great work book to help your preschooler or young learner to start understanding the concepts of telling time. It focuses on learning the numbers, hours, and hand placement on the clock as well as learning about half-hours. It's a great workbook to take to an appt. (waiting room), or for a few minutes before dinner. My children have enjoyed many of the KUMON books.

5 out of 5 stars An Intricate Tale of Lies and Tragic Fate.......2007-02-22

"The Children's Hour" is an excellent play and very poignantly demonstrates how one simple little lie can escalate into something much more severe. I highly recommend this play to any production company which is seeking to put on a play with timeless themes that will captivate the audience. From the second you meet the characters, you identify with them, either personally or because you have meet people like these characters in your own life. The play echoes the real-life scenario of how things spiral out of control, and how sometimes we are too late to fix the damage that has been done. All in all, "The Children's Hour," though not appropriate for younger audiences, is an excellent example of the quintessential themes of theatrical drama.

5 out of 5 stars A play that will never get old..........2007-02-21

Lillian Hellman's play is as good as new.

Treating subjects as old as time, if read or perfomed smartly, it can be a huge success.

Better than the film versions, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in issues like lies, treason and power. Specially power: the part that gives it all the sense.

Lesbianism isn't a principal factor of the play, so I wouldn't define it as the important part of it all.

A great read, a great play.

1 out of 5 stars Stupid book.......2005-04-25

and mostly stupid dialogue!

people do not then or now deal that way with people,

nor do they not have any idea why people might take kids out of school, at that time after ww2.

example "why must I not marry..." "how could a girl..."

5 out of 5 stars "Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbor".......2004-06-13

Lillian Hellman's magnificent, heart-wrenching, ground breaking and beautiful 1934 play takes the aforementioned commandment and creates a stunning cautionary tale that is not for the weak of heart. The perniciousness of lying and the often tragic consequences therein form the spine of this, Hellman's first major success on the Broadway stage.

Concerning a scandal at a private girl's school, Hellman bravely dramatizes the scars and cycles of abuse which result not only from lying but also from ignorance and cowardice. As I prepare this script for production in the fall of 2004, I find its themes timeless and as hard hitting as any contemporary work.

In Mary Tilford, Hellman has created one of the American Theatre's great villians. She serves as the literary model for "Rhoda" in THE BAD SEED as well as "Abigail" in THE CRUCIBLE. She is the embodiment of souless evil, intent on destroying all around her in order to advance her own status. She is the type of character that can truly, to quote RICHARD III, "Smile and murder whilst I smile". As my cast staged a rough read through, the hisses and rage she inspires is frightening.

Poetic without being obscure or pretentious, the dialouge is crisp and direct. Hellman's characters are three-dimensional and her pacing and story-telling is impeccable. I hope our production will do this great play justice.

As for any potential readers of this play: don't hestitate. Add this to you theatre library immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully infuriating........2002-12-04

I recently saw a production of this at a local high school. It is one of the most dramatic, engaging, and infuriating plays I have ever seen. If you cant stand to watch supreme injustice, this play is not for you. The accuser of Wright and Dobie has to be the one of the most despichable characters ever devised. all of the characters, from Wright and Dobie down to the Delivery Boy, are engaging and realistic. this is a play that shows perfectly the serious harm that can be caused by "little white lies", and how prejudice effects everyone, even if they arent a member of the victim group. An enlightening, depressing, beautiful play.
