This book was an all-time favorite with my sons when they were ages 3-7. From unexpected adventures to everyday routine, Alfie meets life with good-natured friendliness, honesty, and quick thinking. The stories emphasize the multi-dimensioned personality of every human, no matter his/her age! I wish there were more books like Hughes writes.

Nails it on the Head.......2007-07-10

I have 2 daughters and found this book while searching for a new story about sisters. The reviews were so good, and the pictures I could see so sweet that I ordered it. When it arrived I read it to myself and indeed my eyes did smart towards the end. But instead of thinking about my daughters I found myself thinking of myself and my 2 older sisters. I related perfectly to the conflicting feelings of the little sister, and to the conclusion in which love for her big sister won out, but she still kept her afternoon alone to herself, something that's hers alone. I adore the illustrations and feel the story is perfectly told for about 3-7 year olds - just enough repetition for new readers, too. I'm impressed with the way it addresses the topic of conflict between sisters, without making anyone the bad guy, or without being obnoxious or shallow. My daughters are still a little too young for this book but I expect it will become a classic in our family. My highest compliments to this author.

The value of sisters.......2007-05-28

This is a lovely story about two sisters looking out for one another - the older one naturally doing it and telling little sister what to do, and the younger one learning that her big sister also had vulnerabilities, and that she too (the little sister) could look after her big sister. It was a favorite of my sister and mine when we were growing up. I highly recommend it.

i got this book for my little sister for her 18th birthday, and my mom cried when she read it because it was so sweet and perfect for the two of us. its a very sentimental book with lovely illustrations. Perfect for two sisters!

This is the cutest story- my girls love it but they don't understand why it makes me cry every time we read it, or when I talk about it! I am getting it for all my friends who have little girls, and I think it would be a sweet gift for grown up sisters too! Sweet simple illustrations but the store is great.

I grabbed this from the store shelf on a whim, because we have a Big Sister and a Little Sister. Turns out the story is a real tear-jerker; be prepared.

Looking for perfection?.......2007-09-12

The work of Berk Breathed is hauntingly beautiful and heartbreakingly insightful...it is also dead-on hilarious when he wants it to be. Please don't reject this book because of a "dedication" remark that is not so much a political statement as it is a reflection of the fact that somewhere out there, right now, someone is trying to raise future-President Fudwupper. Let us pray that they have purchased this book!

I used this book with primary grades to cover the topic of telling the truth. I found it works best with second graders because they can understand the secondary message of family loyalty. I also purchased "A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue" and this works great with K-1. Both great additions to my collection!

There is no higher upper............2005-11-25

.... than Edwurd and Fanny Fudwupper. One of Berkeley's best. A favorite of my 4 year old. I had the distinct pleasure of reading it to the 15 kids in her preschool class and captivated everyone of them! A little goofey, a great little lesson. Have fun with this one and your younger child. They certainly will enjoy it.

This book flows beautifully, it's so fun to read. My 2 year old son loves the book--mostly the well illustrated pictures, but for the cadence as well. I highly recommend Fudwupper to readers of all ages!

My 4-year-old fell in love with this book, and others in the series. Short, repetitive sentences, humorous stories, and appealing animal characters made it a hit; it's also helping her learn to read. Good choice for toddlers as well as preschoolers and early readers.

This is a fun book for new siblings (there's a sister version, too). I've given several as new baby gifts to the siblings. My son has one now that he's a big brother, too. The personalization makes it really special for the kids. Especially appropriate for ages 3-8, but will work for younger siblings, too.

This is actually a wonderful book for older sibs. However, I purchased it without realizing its religious bent. As I am not a Christian, it was not suitable for our household. I wish the author would publish a similar book, minus the bible verses.

Great for teaching about another baby.......2007-04-14

Even though my son is still young, we wanted to start introducing the fact that he was going to be a big brother. I was impressed with this book once i read the first few pages. The best part about this book was that it referred to the new baby as "baby," and this is exactly what i wanted since right now I do not know the sex of the new baby. It also demonstrates how the baby will grow, from sleeping all the time to learning to sit up, and finally to the point where the new baby can play with his big brother. My family greatly enjoys this book.

Snipp, Snapp, and Snurr are brothers who's mother is going away for a vacation as they are in the care of thier Nanny. While thier mother is away they want to make her a special surprise present for her homecoming so they set out to get it. However, having no money, they offer thier labor services in trade for services needed from craftsmen to make thier mother a nice chair.

Sometimes Being Small is Okay (A review of D.W. Thinks Big).......2005-07-16

This is a variation of the 'sometimes little is just right' plot.

In this case, DW is feeling bad because she feels left out of her aunt's wedding. Arthur gets to be ring bearer and her cousin Cora gets to be flower girl; both because they are older.

But fear not, DW gets to save the day when Arthur accidentally looses the ring down an air conditioning vent. While Arthur valiantly tries to retrieve the ring, he is just too large. Enter DW, who is just the right size.

As thanks for her saving the day, DW gets to march down the aisle carrying the ring.

Three Stars. Okay story of popular characters. Minus two stars for being a re-hash of similar plots.

Great journal and activity book for a new big brother/sister.......2007-07-14

I bought this book for my 5 year old and she loves it! We had a great time doing the "pre-baby" activities and she can hardly wait for the baby to come so that she can finish the other activities that are about the baby. Be sure to get this book well before the baby arrives, since the first 3 chapters are based on preparing the child for the new sibling. Based on the amount of journaling, experiments, and projects, I would recommend this book for 5 year olds and older. For younger children, I would recommend My New Baby and Me, also availble at Amazon.

Nice book with lots of ideas on how to explain to your child about the upcoming arrival of a new sibling and activities to do with your child etc. Only problem is that your child would have to be pretty old to be able to use this book. I think 4 years old but maybe as young as 3. Certainly not appropriate for under 3. So if you've spaced your kids 2 years apart or so then this would not work for you.
