2 out of 5 stars Common Sense.......2007-06-09

While Hendricks knows what it takes to teach effectively, I was disappointed with this book. If you are looking for a book to learn how to effectively communicate well with students, this book will be helpful. If you already have good communication skills and common sense in how to connect with students, you'll find this book to be mostly review without any exciting new insights. Please don't let this discredit Dr. Hendricks' other books. Make sure to purchase a copy of Living By the Book by Howard and William Hendricks.

5 out of 5 stars My changed life.......2007-05-09

Dr. Hendricks is a master at taking a rather serious subject and making his book about it irresistible. From beginning to end, his wit and insight to the student made this book an easy read about a very challenging undertaking. I appreciated over and over again his reminiscent writing about when he was a boy and his perspective of teachers and likewise his students and how he interacted with them. This book is now invaluable to me as a teacher. Wish I had known about it sooner. It is worth the effort to discern a person's "learning curve" and engage them accordingly. It's worth the challenge, especially if you're teaching them about the Lord. Thank you, Dr. Hendricks.

5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2007-02-12

I used this book as a training tool for Sunday School teachers in a small church. We found it to be excellent material. It is to the point and doesn't pull any punches about the fact the teaching is a committment. Should be required reading for everyone who wants to teach.

5 out of 5 stars Basal Book from an Evangelical Icon.......2006-12-08

Howard Hendricks is something of a Conservative Evangelical icon, a teacher of teachers, who for more than forty years shaped the teaching ministries of students at Dallas Seminary. Regardless of what one might think of Dispensationalism, it is undeniable that Dallas Grads are formidable teachers. More than any other figure, the credit for that reality goes to Howard Hendricks.

Using the acronym "TEACHER," and basing his approach on Gregory's "Seven Laws of Teaching," Hendricks seeks to outline the basic skills, attitudes and characteristics of good teaching and of the good teacher. Clearly he seeks to transform not only the teaching but also the teacher. He does this by devoting one chapter to each of seven characteristics , in an anecdotally- and wisdom-rich format.

Chapter One - The Law of the Teacher-- Stop growing today and you stop teaching tomorrow. He begins by emphasizing that the teacher can only teach as he/she continues to be a learner. When the learning stops, the well runs dry. In addition, people will become conformed to the image of the teacher. Therefore, a teacher must take care to be worthy of imitation, especially in the area of character. For Hendricks, the best candidates for the role of teacher are faithful, available and teachable. Other people need not apply. The teacher must be developing in the intellectual, physical [practical], and social dimensions.

Chapter Two - The Law of Education--How people learn determines how you teach. People are only candidates for learning when they know they don't know and when they care about that. After Maslow, Hendricks speaks of four levels of learning : unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and unconscious competence. Our job is to help our students to see themselves in this continuum and to get them moving, and this will often involve exposing them to their ignorance in a motivational manner. Then we must be alert to "teachable moments." Then, by precept and example, we must teach people how to think, to learn and to work, and develop in them four master skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. All of the foregoing components help assure that those who sit in our classes will truly learn rather than merely observing.

Chapter Three - The Law of Activity--Maximum learning is always the result of maximum involvement. Over and again in his book, Hendricks decries passivity and dependency: we are working to make our students active and independent or at least interdependent [thank you, Steven Covey]. That being the case, students will learn best as they are most active in the process. They need to be guided in their practice, taught to properly evaluate their experience, and learn not by repeating their mistakes but by doing the right things. Hearing is the most inefficient means of learning--people only retain at the most ten percent of what they hear. But they will retain up to fifty percent of what they see and up to ninety percent of what they do.
In the doing department, one must make sure that the activities are meaningful--providing direction without dictatorship, stressing function and application, having a planned purpose, and concerned with process ["the why"] as well as product ["the what"]. And, as much as possible these activities should involve solving realistic problems, if possible, those arising within the experiences of the student. .

Chapter Four - The Law of Communication--To truly impart information reguires the building of bridges. This means really knowing one's students, which in itself means spending time with them outside the classroom. Communication will be more effective to the degree that it is something the teacher deeply knows, feels and does. Therefore a breakdown in any of those three components will vitiate the teaching event. Words are important as teaching tools, but cannot be apart from personal investment and example. Then the teacher must prepare, even over prepare, and then guard his delivery from poor enunciation and poor use of the voice [vary your pitch and speak loudly enough to be heard in the back of the room!]. One must also seek to eliminate distractions, as in poor attentiveness to the teaching space and equipment, and provide for feedback that insures that teaching will be on target and ever-improving.

Chapter Five - The Law of the Heart--Teaching that impacts is not head to head, but heart to heart. Referring to Plato's triumvirate of ethos [character/credibility], pathos [compasssion] and logos [content--note the alliteration!], Hendricks treats them like a pyramid, where each is dependent upon the previous. Without the foundation of character/credibility, there will not be the confidence in the teacher which is foundational to the implicit contract between teacher and student. Second, the student needs to know that the teacher cares about him [I question this], and third of course, is content. All learning is in the direction of change, and needs to be motivated by felt need. Finally, to sum up, in order to be a person of impact, a teacher must know his students, earn the right to be heard, and be willing to be vulnerable with his students.

Chapter Six - The Law of Encouragement--Teaching tends to be most effective when the learner is properly motivated. Having hinted at motivation in the earlier chapters, Hendricks treats it more directly here. Primary is developing a strong sense of felt need: people will not learn what they have no felt need for, and will invest themselves in learning that for which they do have a felt need Having created that felt need, the teacher, if administering training, needs to honor the time-honored cylce of telling, showing, supervised doing, and unsupervised doing.

Chapter Seven - The Law of Readiness--The teaching-learning process will be most effective when both student and teacher are adequately prepared. I very much see Bobby Clinton of Fuller Seminary, another master teacher, in this chapter, as he insists on this kind of approach, giving students much work to do to prepare for each class session. In accord with this philosophy, Hendricks believes in giving students the right kind of assignments, since they precipitate thinking, develop a background for class sessions, and help develop habits of independent study. He then concludes this chapter with some practical suggestions for dealing with either unprepared or over-zealous students.

This book should be required reading for all clergy and teachers, especially in the field of Judaeo Christian religion. It provides a foundational orientation to a spiritually significant and competent teaching ministry. Above all, this is a wise book, and as the Book of Proverbs tells us, it is only fools who despise wisdom and instruction.

5 out of 5 stars Hendricks hits a homerun - must read for every teacher.......2006-06-26

The great Dallas Theological Seminary professor Dr. Hendricks shares with others his basic principles for passing on to his students the knowledge and passion for God's Word. Basically the book can be boiled down to one primary principle - you must have passion for what you know to transfer what you know to others. The book was originally released as The Seven Laws of the Teacher, but has since been repackaged and re-released under this new title with a new cover and design - but the truths shared by Hendricks are timeless and powerful - and should be read by EVERY teacher!

The first law of the teacher was the best, in my opinion - if you ever stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow. Dr. Hendricks challenges the teacher to remain a student, to always continue learning, pursuing truth and knowledge - and to pass that thirst on to their students - far more important than any particular lesson or tidbit of information is the thirst for knowledge and truth - and that is something that is modeled for students in the lives of the teacher. If the teacher is stale, the lessons and information can't be fresh!

The Seven Laws of the Teacher are as follows:
* The Law of the Teacher - if you stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow.
* The Law of Education - the way people learn determines how you teach.
* The Law of Activity - maximum learning is always the result of maximum involvement.
* The Law of Communication - to truly impart information requires the building of bridges.
* The Law of the Heart - teaching that impacts is not head to head, but heart to heart.
* The Law of Encouragement - teaching tends to be most effective when the learner is properly motivated.
* The Law of Readiness - the teaching-learning process will be most effective when both student and teacher are adequately prepared.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those entering their 3rd age or their retirement zone.......2006-07-23

I found this book to be a concise, easy to read book about the joys and opportunities to be found in this stage of our life. Howard and Marika explore topics that a near and dear to us, that we must pay attention to if we wish to make this journey look like what we have always hoped for. Sometimes we all need a map to get us where we want to be!

5 out of 5 stars A Purpose-Filled Life.......2005-06-14

The book, Too Young to Retire, as well as the Stone's web site and book study groups, is their effort to teach people how to live a life filled with purpose, rather than the emptiness of so many retirees' lives.

The book begins with an introduction to the Stones and how they arrived at the attitude that they did. It then dives right into the largest problem that retirees face - money. If you ask most people approaching retirement age what they fear most about retirement, running out of money is tied with poor health. The Stones tackle the problem face on, correctly stating the "it is much less risky to worry about money than to face the volcanic changes of midlife and beyond." Once the discussion is concluded, they suggest several techniques to put money in its place, including the tried and true method of keeping a daily record of how you spend your money.

Not content with tackling retirement, the Stones next look at the world of work and why work isn't working. They cite many of the same ills that books such as Take Back Your Time discuss: too little vacation, too much pressure, too little fulfillment and more. The book quotes Rutgers University's Heldrich Center for Workforce Development study, "Most workers see their 'retirement' not as a time for leisure and travel, but as an opportunity to do fulfilling work, and find avocation in what they do." The end of the chapter offers methods to work through to who you really are. These are good starting places, but the more hard-core 9-5ers might need a little more work. The Stone's suggestion to hire a personal coach, even for a little while, is a good one.

The book is complete with pages and pages of resources. More can be found at their website.

If retirement is in your future, this book is a great place to begin the process.

2 out of 5 stars Save Your Money and Skip This One.......2004-01-30

Unless you are a far-left political idealist; "open-minded," as Mr. and Mrs. Stone say, their book offers little useful information for retirees.

5 out of 5 stars Especially for anyone over the age of 62.......2003-09-21

Motivational speaker Howard Stone and yoga teacher Marika Stone team up in Too Young To Retire: An Off-The-Road Map To The Rest Of Your Life to present readers with a down-to-earth instructional guide which is drawn from the authors own lives as a couple, their research, and several assorted case histories in order to present practical and effective alternatives to retirement -- including stimulating work and community service. From opportunities to earn money or participate in business, to volunteering one's time, to traveling for fun and profit, Too Young To Retire is an exciting and dynamic self-help instructional guide for charting new possibilities for the future and highly recommended reading -- especially for anyone over the age of 62 and not ready for the rocking chair/nursing home slide into oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars Why Retire when you can Review?.......2003-07-29

"It is already clear the 21st Century will demand more of all of us, young or old. The gifts we are given ? longevity, better health, education and financial resources ? come with responsibility. After all, we have inherited and even helped create a world that needs our wisdom, experience, and compassion now."

I've always thought the idea of retiring to be a strange concept. Why would you just give up your entire life? Even if you gave up your job should there not be other interests you would pursue, perhaps even more aggressively than your previous job.

It has been said that a "hobby" is more the man than his "job." I jest not when I say reviewing can be quite a great job/hobby.

The authors explain how to awaken the inner activist or volunteer. Chapter 5 gives a list of 101 Opportunities you could pursue. I know for sure there is a need for professional people who can keep giving their talents to society. Some of the ideas include:

Relocation Specialist
Personal Coach
Home Tutor
Travel Writer
Yoga Teacher
Massage Therapist
Author
Executive chef
Cabaret Singer

You might be thinking, "Hey, those sound more fun than what I'm doing now!" I personally like the "author" and "massage therapist" idea.

The authors explain how life is uncharted territory. How we live in a culture preoccupied with wealth. Are we not living our lives to find our deepest purpose?

The Contents Include:

Money - The Prose of Life
It's Not Working
It Is Working - Volunteering Revisited
101 Opportunities for the Open-Minded
Toward Wellness
Radical Departures
Resources

After you read this book, you will wonder if retirement really represents the "good life."

Well if you take Chapter 7 into account and start traveling the world, this might be just the bliss your soul has been craving. I also "loved" the idea of becoming a care taker. Who would not want to go live in a beautiful location as a property manager?

This book is about living in the moment and seeing your new freedom as an excuse to do exactly what you love.

Download Description

Swann's Way, the first part of A la recherche de temps perdu, Marcel Proust's seven-part cycle, was published in 1913. In it, Proust introduces the themes that run through the entire work. The narrator recalls his childhood, aided by the famous madeleine; and describes M. Swann's passion for Odette. The work is incomparable. Edmund Wilson said "[Proust] has supplied for the first time in literature an equivalent in the full scale for the new theory of modern physics."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Swann's Way.......2007-07-15

The product and the narration is very well done. Unfortunately, I found that Proust is just not for me.

3 out of 5 stars Hmmm....Will it get any better than this?.......2007-03-07

So i finally made the commitment to reading Proust's In Search of Lost Time. I've been contemplating this for years, and this spring i have the time so i've excitedly decided to forge what will be a memorable relationship with the author and the text.

But geez, am i DISAPPOINTED with the first "installment"!!! I'm usually an avid reader of European classics, and although i wasn't expecting Proust to be thrilling, i guess i didn't realize that the work was completely plotless.

I have to stop and remind myself (lest i give up?) that i am reading for the full experience rather than instant gratification, so i'm going to doggedly push on, and read something "fun" like Waugh or Vonnegut between each of the 6 books of I.S.O.L.T...

On a postive note, Proust's unique style allows the reader's mind to wander with the narrator, so i honestly can't say that i was "bored". It is also interesting that Proust is so often right on target about the human psyche and about society, when he, an invalid, was himself removed from it for much of his life.

Finally, Swann's Way is, let's face it, a moderately thick book. Without plot, you'd think that it would be a slow and dragging read. However, his long sentences somehow propel the reader forward to the next interesting speculation or to the next social event, and once again, his style is such that we become involved in the character's life....what will be the next step in Swann and Odette's relationship?

Although i have mixed feelings about the start of my Proustian journey, I console myself with his notions of time. The way we feel and think about something while we are in the midst of it may differ greatly from the way we feel and think about it once we are removed from it. Perspective is altered by distance (and memory, imagine that...). Perhaps once i finish the work in its entirety the pieces will all come together and there will be a cumulative gain. If nothing else, there will be a sense of accomplishment!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Writing But Not A Novel: A Lengthy Narrative On Life.......2007-02-03

In search of Lost Time is regarded by many as a key work of modern literature, bridging ideas from the 19th and 20th centuries. Proust is often compared to Joyce and Kafka.

This is revised translation of the early Moncrieff translation. That was the primary translation for the first 50 years after the first publication in French. The present work includes the later changes to the original French manuscripts made in 1954. These additions and changes were excluded in the first manuscript from Proust. The manuscript was revised in the Pleiade edit of 1954 to include all of Proust's final edits. Those edits, additions, and changes are now translated and revised by Enright.

There are three parts to Volume I:
- Combray (the town)
- Swann in Love (Swann is the family name of the narrator)
- Place-Names-The Name

Here is a question for the average reader: is this a novel? What is it? The present Volume I is 600 pages, and if you continue on after Volume I, you face another 5000 pages or so. It is not a novel and it is not a play or drama as one sees with Shakespeare; instead, it is a seemingly endless narrative. Should we be concerned with what it is? The answer is yes, because some will find Proust to be a tedious challenge while others will love him.

For example, Madam Bovary is a novel. It has a beginning, an end, clear characters who are good, evil, and indifferent. It takes place in 19th century French countryside as does Proust, and unlike Proust it is a gripping tale. The writing by Flaubert is flawless. The structure is perfect. That is a novel. I read all 500 pages of Madame Bovary in one day and was very entertained and impressed.

Proust's Volume I, by contrast, has taken me 12 months to read. Again, as with Flaubert, the prose is faultless and the details described are done exquisitely, but there is no plot, and it is not gripping. It is a series of memories or short sections. Almost by definition, these short pieces do not carry the drama of a well balanced novel. They are weakly linked together plus the writing is complicated by many characters, often relatives of the narrator. If you put the book down and start again you are momentarily lost. Some readers, and that includes myself, wonder why we continue.

Proust is part of our literary education and one can appreciate the interwoven snapshots of life, the beautiful descriptions of rural Combray, the characters of France, and the relatives in his family. It is an endless narrative about a man's life and those pieces of his life. It is a collection of memories. Here in Volume I we see three broad snapshots of one man's life; we escape to 19th century France, and we become part of a seemingly endless tale about the fine details of that life. If that interests you, then you will love Proust.

Only the most patient should read Proust. Be prepared for beautiful prose and French 19th century life.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful but fatiguing.......2007-01-24

Clearly, Proust has a remarkable gift for perception, as if he is able to see human experience, circumstance, and even plain objects, in exploded detail, and distill them for the reader. Particularly in the first and third parts of the book, he frequently drops gems of absolute truth, in much the same way that Shakespearean couplets remarkably capture the essence of love or revenge. To me, this is the reward of reading the book, and what makes the challenge worth undertaking.

At first, you may be overwhelmed by his very complex sentences, as others have noted. It is important to Proust to express an entire thought in one sentence; a lofty objective with sometimes dire consequences, but Proust adheres to it admirably. You soon learn to maintain the subject of the sentence in your head while Proust explores two or three tangents to the original thought before he comes back to it. What works in the reader's favor is that Proust is very regular with his sentence structure, so once you develop a feel for it, it ceases to intimidate.

The book is divided into three parts: The first and third parts recount experiences of Proust's early childhood, while the second part details the love affair of Charles Swann. To me, the first part is the most beautiful, followed by the third part. You will be able to tell within the first 50 or so pages whether or not Proust will suit you. The second part of the book becomes plodding and monotonous, as Proust narrates even a simple set of circumstances in many layers of redundancy, each recounted in exhaustive detail, in his complex style which begins to feel formulaic, wordy, and indulgent. Here's the subject of the sentence, tangent number one, the tangent to tangent number one, tangent number two, and then it ends with yet another metaphor about invalids. The regularity of sentence structure is much easier to tolerate in the first and third parts because Proust flits between several ideas or subjects, whereas in the second part, he drills to the very core of the earth on one or two subjects with a few variations. I found myself feeling pretty burned out, counting down pages to the end of Part 2. My advice is to pick up your reading speed if it starts to become boring or if you lose your concentration.

If Proust were not quite so overly thorough in Part 2, or if he had varied his cadence or sentence structure a bit more, I could recommend this book without hesitation. As it is, it will require an unusual investment of concentration and patience, but I believe it is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-read.......2006-06-21

I have been planning for some years to read IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME, and finally started in March with Lydia Davis' translation of SWANN'S WAY.

Proust is one of the most empathetic authors that I have ever encountered. To tell the story of his youth, to describe his fears and joys and loves, he turns inward, and in doing so, gives a strikingly accurate portrayal of the human heart, and human folly.

SWANN'S WAY is diveded into four sections, too long to be called chapters: Combray, Combray II, Swann in Love, Place-Names:The Name.

Combray and Combray II tell of the summers of Marcel's youth, his grandmother and great-aunt Leonie (who never got out of her bed), Francoise, the maid, walks with his parents, meeting M. Swann, their neighbor, meeting M. Swann's daughter for the first time and falling in love with her. It is very difficult for an author to write from the perspective of a child and do it convicingly, but Proust succeeds here. I loved little Marcel, a sensitive, naive little boy who absorbs everything around him.

'Swann in Love' tells the story of M. Swann and how he fell in love with one Odette d'Crecy, a woman not of his class who seduces him and then breaks his heart.

In 'Place-Names: The Name' we read about a slightly older Marcel, and his first attempts at winning the heart of Gilberte, the daughter of M. Swann. My favorite image in SWANN'S WAY comes from 'Place Names' - an image of Odette d'Crecy strolling down the Avenue of the Acacias alone, which Proust includes in his diatribe against the death of elegance.

As the purpose of writing IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME was to recover his forgotten memories, Proust's tale is not told as a series of interconnected events, but as a collection of interwoven memories - some of them incomplete. [The short novella, 'Swann in Love', that is contained in the novel is an exception - though still told from an internalized perspective, that of M. Swann.]

In this format, description trumps plotline and dialogue. His descriptions - of tapestries in cathedrals, of a child's longing for his mother, of the beauty of words and the pain of falling in love - are first rate. I found many times that reading this book was a lot like looking at a great painting, or a sunset - soothing, [also with the exception of 'Swann in Love', where I found myself completely aggravated with M. Swann and hating Odette. An author that can calm you but also create characters capable of arousing passionate anger must be great.]

SWANN'S WAY is highly recommended.

Book Description

Jewish tradition is a gift and a challenge. Living a Jewish Life is your guide to the cultural and spiritual treasures of Judaism, explained in ways that address the choices posed by modern life. From hanging a mezuzah to celebrating a wedding, from lighting Sabbath candles to choosing a synagogue that's right for you and your family, you will find "why-to's" and "how-to's" in these pages, which are tuned to both the realities of the modern world and the timeless, grounding rhythms of Jewish tradition.

Spanning the spectrum of liberal Jewish thought -- Conservative, Reconstructionist and Reform, unaffiliated, new age and secular -- this book provides a sensitive and practical introduction to making Judaism a meaningful part of your life.

Filled with anecdotes, lore, memorable quotations, history, prayers and ceremonies, Living a Jewish Life celebrates the diversity, joy and fulfillment of Jewish life today. This book is filled with your Jewish choices.

5 out of 5 stars Great Progressive resource.......2006-01-08

I got an extra copy of this book at my first meeting with the (Reform) rabbi who did my original conversion. It's really an incredible concise guidebook for establishing a Jewish home and working rituals and traditions into everyday life. Ms. Diamant doesn't operate under any assumptions about the reader's prior experience or lack thereof in living a Jewish life and maintaining a Jewish household, so there isn't any talking down to the reader nor failure to explain something due to falsely assuming this is basic knowledge to everyone. There are chapters and sections on all sorts of subjects, such as the b'rit, Kashrut, Jewish publications, what to look for in a shul, weddings, new traditions (such as marking the arrival of menopause with a special celebration, like one last special visit to the mikveh), how to decorate the home, all of the holidays, and b'nei mitzvah. Ms. Diamant explains what to do and why it is done, though she never preaches to the reader and dictates that this absolutely has to be done, and that it can only be done in this certain way, or else. She acknowledges that within liberal/progressive Judaism, there are many new traditions and ways of doing things, as well as old longstanding traditions that are still widely done, and that there is more than one right way to do these things. For example, in the section on naming a baby, she mentions that it's still common for people to name a baby after a relative, sometimes with the tenuous connection of the first initial, but doesn't say that a baby must only and always be named after a relative the way a lot of (Ashkenazic) North American Jews seem to believe. She also explains that there are multiple ways to observe the laws of Kashrut, with different levels. Some people are going to go whole hog and be glatt kosher, others will only keep kosher at home, others will keep kosher at restaurants but will eat kosher fish and things from the salad bar in non-kosher restaurants, and others will eat meat from the kosher animals (such as cows, chickens, and turkeys) but won't mind if the meat doesn't come from the kosher butcher or doesn't have a hechsher on it at the supermarket.

This book makes plain that it's a guidebook for those in the denominations of Liberal Judaism-Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, Renewal, Humanistic, and New Age. It is not intended to be a guidebook for those in more traditional spheres. I myself have always had strong leanings towards Orthodoxy, and would seriously consider affiliating myself such if ever they resolve some of the pressing issues they've been facing in recent years, particularly the ones relating to womens' roles. But it seems silly to complain about this book for not presenting an Orthodox perspective on anything when it states at the beginning that this isn't that type of book, and why. Someone looking for a more frum perspective would be better-served going elsewhere (such as Blu Greenberg's book 'How to Run a Traditional Jewish Household') instead of going to a guidebook that's intended for those of more liberal persuasions.

2 out of 5 stars Limited.......2005-05-30

When reading the author's mention of driving to synagogue on Shabbat, or cooking on Friday Nights, a voice at the back of my mind told me that such a thing (breaking the Sabbath) would have been abhorrent to my ancestors and 4,000 years of Jewish tradition. Although the author's Judaism fits very well in the context of contemporary American society, for those of us interested in the Religion of our Forefathers.

Readers on a true spiritual search or those looking for something more authentic might be interested in Buber's "Tales of the Hasidim" or Heschel's "An Island in Time". Though less 'modern', they impart more meaning and relevance.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2004-12-18

This book is incredible, leaves you always wanting more. The writing style is easy to read and this book covers anything you would need to know in a basic overall summary of jewish life and traditions. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get more in touch with their jewishness or anyone considering converting to judaism or interested in the hows and whys of judaism.

4 out of 5 stars decent, but other books are better.......2003-05-20

This is a good read. But I recomment "to pray as a Jew" and "to be a jew". This book is a good resource. I dont think it really speaks to the reader very well.

4 out of 5 stars Insights into Jewish Life.......2002-04-25

Whether you are a lost Jew, the spouse of a Jew, or just someone who is interested in Jewish observances and traditions, this is a worthwhile book to own. The authors emphasize Judaism as a series of choices that you can make or not make. They discuss, in admitted brevity, the various facets of Jewish life and Jewish customs as they have evolved since the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D. Each chapter concludes with a list of books for further reading. You will be tempted!

5 out of 5 stars Texas Gardening the Natural Way: The Complete Handbook by Howard Garrett .......2006-11-06

This book is an excellent source for anyone wanting to start from scratch on gardening. I am a very visual person, and the pictures of plants and illustrations on how to plant make this book excellent! The book I got is hard-back so I know it will last a long time!

5 out of 5 stars What you need to know to garden in Texas.......2006-11-04

It's a great book as it covers subjects from planting, caring for, and choosing which plants will do well. The book also covers Texas' bugs (which we have plenty of) and pest control. Garrett is my gardening guru in Texas...but if you have his previous books, then this will look like a review.

    Book Description

This book traces the lives of the Snowdens, an African American family of musicians and farmers living in rural Knox County, Ohio. Howard L. Sacks and Judith Rose Sacks examine the Snowdens' musical and social exchanges with rural whites from the 1850s through the early 1920s and provide a detailed exploration of the claim that the Snowden family taught the song "Dixie" to Dan Emmett--the white musician and blackface minstrel credited with writing the song. This edition features a new introduction in which the authors discuss the public response to this controversial claim, and present new information on the Snowdens' musical and social experiences.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great introduction.......2006-05-04

This book is a great introduction into the philosophy of Vernon Howard. If you are new to the idea of self awakening, or acquiring good mental health, this is a good place to start. Compared to his other books, "Mystic Path To Cosmic Consciousness, The Power of Your Supermind, and "Esoteric Mind Power", this book seems on a beginner level. But that's good if you've never read these other books. I could recommend this, then the other books in that order.
The one and only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the "Mental Pictures" didn't appeal to me that much. Some people need analogies and metaphores to help them to grasp a concept, I just tend to want to get to the heart of the teaching. The whole book is based on the idea of visualizing these concepts in this way, and others may find this enjoyable.
That is only a minor point, I do believe this book will ease you into the philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars Works almost subliminally to create change .......2005-03-09

In 2002, I had the most amazing year of my life. I was seeing things in a whole new way; life and everything on the planet looked wonderous; and I allowed myself the privilege of feeling whatever emotion arose - and being okay with them all! "This is the way man was meant to feel," I told myself. "And I've never felt better in my life!"

I've since slipped from that "high" and then wondered what it was I was doing right that created such wonderful emotional states. Only now am I beginning to discover the answer to that question: I read one-third of THIS BOOK in the months prior to my "enlightenment." Perhaps it was Vernon Howard's "Psycho-Pictography" that made the difference! If so, then this book is a little miracle-maker worthy of repeated readings! It must work imperceptibly - almost subliminally - at creating real life-changing results.

Time to read "Psycho-Pictography" again and test my theory. If it can again serve as a catalyst toward wonderful feeling-states, then I'm in for a wonderful 2005... and will never feel depressed or irrationally afraid again!

If you're depressed, lonely, panic-striken, confused about your place in the Universe, or haunted by irrational beliefs about yourself and the world, I recommend giving this book a crack at what it is that ails you. This could very well contain the answer(s) you seek.

    5 out of 5 stars Truth.......2004-05-13

I found this book in a used bookstore and have been carrying it around ever since. I usually dont get into self help type books. But this book is different. Ive since bought more products by Vernon Howard. This book describes the human dillema perfectly. Truth has never been spoken so clearly, Ive found nothing that equals this masterpiece. And if you give it a chance, you'll forever be changed.

5 out of 5 stars I recommend this constantly to my friends........2001-06-12

I first read this book about five years ago, and I can't count the number of people I've recommended it to. Some of the writing style seems a bit corny or outdated, but the content is amazingly powerful.

I don't think much of most self help books, but this one really does teach us to meditate on the way our minds work, and the resulting increased awareness really can bring about lasting change. It does take a lot of work, but obsessive thoughts can be brought under control with this awareness, leading to a lessening of chronic anger and depression, which in turn allows a brighter outlook and a more optimistic future.

    Vernon really knew his stuff.

5 out of 5 stars this book will change your life!!.......2001-03-05

HI!Psycho-Pictography came into my possession in a very strange way. I was in a need for growth, and it came to me thru a bizarre circumstance and answered ALL my questions and showed me ALL the answers. People always said i was positive and i thought so as well, until i read this book and saw the little negative blocks that i and others put up for ourselves keeping us from reaching our goals and obtaining inner peace. people don't realize how these little negative blocks can build into a giant wall.i wasn't even finished with the book when i got my dream job on my favorite tv show! and my life has steadily improved from there. but it's not about money and jobs, it's about being at peace and finding your true self! learning to deal with people and things that arise in a whole new way. he said, things that made you mad will now make you laugh! when i first read this i was skeptical, but it is SO TRUE!!!i laugh all the time! i can cry for others, but i can no longer cry for myself, if i get sad about myself i start to laugh cause i realize how silly i am being, i have nothing to be sad about and nothing to fear! all thanks to vernon howard!READ THIS BOOK!

4 out of 5 stars This is a must read for anyone involved with traditional archery........2006-11-03

If you are involved with archery, this book belongs in your library. Howard Hill posessed skills that are nothing short of incredible when it came to hunting and target archery. This book will inspire you to pick up your bow and go out and shoot. It might even inspire someone to but down his compound and pick up a real bow. This book is a compilation of accounts from Howards career that would be written off as fantasy if so many people hadn't witnessed what Howard was able to accomplish with a longbow. Howard attempts to describe making bows and other archery tackle. I wouldn't buy the book for these reasons. There are other sources such as the bowyer's bible series that do a much better job.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Archery Book I've Ever Read!.......2005-02-21

Hunting the Hard Way is the best book I have ever read. This book is about the adventures of Howard Hill and others that accompanied him on his hunting trips. Howard Hill used a laminated bamboo longbow that he made in his archery shop. He was an excellent shot with the bow also. He took some amazing shots at animals in this book. The most amazing shot in my opinion was at an elk at over 150 yards! He also went hunting with his bow and arrow.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Traditional Point of View.......2001-07-28

The first 2 chapters of this book locked this reader to the pages like an arrow nocked to the string. The thoughts and feelings expressed by Howard Hill as he came to full draw on each of his adventures put me in the saddle or atop the mountain looking through his eyes. Any archer's heart will race at the reaccounting of each hunt, but only archers of traditional caliber will be able to appreciate the flight of the arrow as it's loosed and hits its intended mark. The bond between fellow hunters is well expressed and gives proper account to the knowledge and wisdom passed down at the campfire by older more experienced hunters. But for the fact that Howard Hill has accomplished things with his bow that I wouldn't begin to consider, I found it difficult to associate with some of his underwater adventures.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GIFT FOR ANY TRADITIONAL ARCHER.......2001-05-01

I received my book on a friday and read it cover to cover in two days. I loved it. Howard Hill was not only the greatest archer in the world, but an excellent story teller. He does everything from shooting a buffalo while riding a horse, to bowfishing under water and shooting a large shark. He even has a technical chapter on bowmaking, and his style of shooting. Any archer will enjoy reading this book.
