Porn you can share with the book store clerk.......2007-10-04
The concept of this book I found very funny. However, since you can read the whole thing at the book store AND have a good laugh with the clerk at same time, it's a bit of waste of trees at the price.
Great Gag Gift for Women.......2007-09-29
After seeing this book and being amused page after page by the simple, hilarious photos of men saying all the right things, I bought four of these to give as Christmas gifts to my female friends. The writing is funny, the photos are terrific... I wish the guys had been a bit more attractive-- they're nice looking but nothing to fawn over. My guess is that any woman age 30-60 who's ever been in a relationship will laugh.
Ohhhhhhhh!! My hands are trembling as I type this!.......2007-09-19
Ladies, this is really HOT! No, I mean really, really HOT!
This is a book of men as you've always dreamed you'd see them: vacuuming, doing dishes (WITHOUT being asked) and pumping some real iron, by getting your outfit ready before he takes you out in it!
This book would make an awesome gift for a bridal shower or for any woman you know who just needs a GOOD LAUGH!
this is not a fake review.......2007-09-13
After ordering this book based on the positive reviews it's obvious to me that the reviews are fake. I found the book to be unreadable, devoid of humor, logic and a point of view, sad and pathetic. Oh, and please note the defensive, hostile comments to any negative review for the book. What does that tell you about who is writing these comments? Casual bystanders? I think not. It's pretty obvious there's an abundance of fake reviews for this insipid piece of unfunny garbage.
Really, Too Cute and Not What You Think!.......2007-09-09
I had heard about this little book from friends and it lives up to expectation! This is not your average porn..these guys are hot. Especially if you like a man that cleans the toilet for you, skips the playoffs to go to a craft show, puts the seat down, thinks you are too thin and other risque actions! The men are hunks and the concept is super. Men are really sexy when they do nice and thoughtful things for us!

Book Description
Ron Jeremy is the porn industry's "everyman." Blessed with a large member and average looks, he's starred in over 1700 films, directed 250 of them, and over the last 20 years has become porn's biggest ambassador into the mainstream. He has appeared in 60 mainstream films, was a consultant on Boogie Nights and 9 1/2 Weeks, has appeared in 14 music videos, was on the VH1's Surreal Life, starred in the critically acclaimed Pornstar (a movie about his life), and Being Ron Jeremy (a take–off on Being John Malkovich, co–starring Andy Dick). And that's just the tip of the iceberg...
Ron Jeremy is a born storyteller (funny, considering he doesn't do a lot of talking in his films) and lucky for us, he has stories on every major Hollywood celebrity. If you want to know where all the bodies are buried, he's the guy who can not only show you the grave, but can tell you the back–story on the tombstone. Ron Jeremy will be a great and entertaining read, not just on the history of porn, but on its emergence into the mainstream, and the man everyone wanted to know while it was all happening.
Customer Reviews:
A fun and insightful read.......2007-09-20
Its nice to see the other side of porn and hear the behind the scenes stories. Ron is obviously a legend, and a great story teller as well. He has many stories to tell. Like I said, a fun read. A great biography of a great person mislabeled for his role in pornography. I recommend it!
awful.......2007-09-20
Don't waste your money on this book. It is horribly written. he thinks he is funny, when he isn't. It's crude!
Jenna Jameson's book is ten times better
Ron,you are a loser.You will always be a loser........2007-09-09
Let's stop and think about this "man" for a moment. There have actually been Ron Jeremy clauses written in the contracts for porn starlets stating that they would never have to sleep with him.He is that replusive and disgusting. It's one thing to be fat, balding and have a ton of back hair, but it's another thing to look like you do not bathe.Try using shampoo and maybe trimming that nasty stache that still contains yesterday's breakfast in it.
This is one thing that makes a person a loser.
We have heard time and time again that Ronnie has a big donger.Fine.I'm sure elephants also have big wangs too,but I don't know too many women who would want to sleep with one.Side note;the elephant would be more attractive than Ron,it also wouldn't be able to tell stupid jokes. It probabally wouldn't smell as bad either.
This is something else that makes a person a loser.
Ron constantly justifies everything about his life.Never does he stop to question his integrity,or lack there of.You've slept with and used thousands of women. You take money in exchange for degrading these women over and over.Heads up Ron;most women (at least the ones who haven't already been screwed up psychologicaly) don't like taking a blast of DNA in the face. You may have a masters degree, but you have no common sense.
In the book XXX Portraits 30 Stars revealed,he stated the following in his biography."When I die,I know people will say good things about me. They will say,"He never lied to nobody."Right, except for the Extends Male Enhancment Capsules that you endorsed on the 4 a.m. infomercials.
Again, this is a path that is traveled by the loser.
I have corresponded with and have a friendship with a former adult star who sat next to him at the AVN awards. She told me that the only reason he still has a steady career with the industry,is becuase he is with the Italian Mafia.
Makes perfect sense to me,because anyone;be it man or woman,
heterosexual or homosexual, would rather watch Jenna Jameson or any attractive woman having sex with someone like Peter North as opposed to the nasueating Jeremy.
Everybody reading this review, make an "L" with your left hand place it on your forehead and repeat after me:"LOSER!"
Just like Asia Carrera,Ron is a trained pianist and veeerrrry intelligent with his master's degree. There is a famous saying;Acts of greatness take 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.
In another words;you can have have all the degrees in the world and be a genius. But unless you actually put that into action;then it's completely worthless.I guess they didn't teach that a Hedgehog High. No,they taught "Take the easy way out, keep making excuses for yourself and make money at the expense of others."
You COULD have helped disabled kids. You COULD have been a talented professional musician. You COULD have been a loyal husband and a great father. You COULD have been a valuble and respected member of society.
But you chose not to.You chose a lifetime of meaningless sex with women who resent you and laugh at you behind your back.
Hugh Hefner doesn't get it.Larry Flint doesn't get it.You don't get it either.
That's why you are and always will be a loser.
A true reflection of Ron Jeremy.......2007-08-20
Ron Jeremy's memoir characterizes his life perfectly. Ron Jeremy is an actor, an adult film superstar, a comedian, and an all-around hard working man. He's been in nearly 2000 films and directed well over 100 himself. He travels the country for appearances year-round. He loves adult conventions and he occasionally performs on the comedy circuit. He's always willing to pose with a fan, always willing to mock himself for a good laugh, and likes to enjoy good food and drink.
It's only natural that Jeremy's memoir is a string of laugh-out-loud funny anecdotes, organized into chapters by subject matter and chronology. Jeremy's had a few struggles with the law (and seen friends have much worse ones with vice squads), but overall, he's a jolly man who loves life, and his memoir reflects that. He doesn't get overly introspective or take an academic look at his life and career, and that's exactly what Jeremy's fans should expect from him. This memoir is Ron Jeremy through-and-through: vulgar with charm, rampantly self-promoting, and celebratory of life. Sure, he name drops, but he usually constrains that to footnotes, and boy did I chuckle at some of those footnotes. He includes plenty of pictures with celebrities, and plenty of pictures of himself in absolutely ridiculous costumes and settings.
The behind-the-scenes tales are too numerous to recount. The food buffet at Plato's Retreat is cited as the cause of Jeremy's body health downfall (nevermind the swinging). He reveals the origins of the chicken soup myth, one that started on an early set when someone asked how he could produce so much output. He credited his grandmother's chicken soup, and the legend lives on today on modern sets. He also talks candidly about discovering his autofellatio skills. Every time he did it on camera was sure to be the last, but the right amount of goading and money could convince him to do it again.
Any porn history buff won't want to miss Ron's version of the controversial careers of Linda Lovelace and Traci Lords. He's got some great stories straight from Linda's first husband, and later discusses Linda's own disagreements with the antiporn feminists who cast her as their pet cause.
If you need one more reason to pick this up, I leave you with this: Who wouldn't want to read a book with the photo caption, "Here I am as Mussolini in an XXX World War II parody?"
Very good, if you don't mind a little sex.......2007-06-26
What else would you expect from a Ron Jeremy book? His life story is very good and an interesting read, even if you're not a "fan". He does get into his sexual life (graphically) but if you can stomach that, it's actually a great read and dare I say, heartwarming. Recommended even for soccer moms!
Just for comparison, the Richard Pryor book was WAY dirtier than this one and he was just a comedian!

Customer Reviews:
Freedom.......2007-08-05
This book was life changing for me. It showed me the origin of my issue and then it outlined the cycle that occurs when I am feeling driven to internet porn. It then gave me the tools to understand how to stop the compulsive behavior that lends itself to the escape. This is really a handbook as much as anything. You can go back to the book on a continuous basis until you have developed the skills to control your behavior. This book works.
A Practical, Working Guide to Breaking the Chain of Addiction.......2007-01-15
I highly recommend this book to counselors or individuals seeking practical methods of dealing with pornography addiction. Dr. Skinner's does a great job of describing the drivers and nature of the problem and his approach outlines doable steps toward recovery. It is the best book on the subject I have seen. We are now recommending it to individuals in our counseling practice with good success.
Simple and Effective Advice .......2006-10-11
I read this book in one evening. Being the wife of an addict, I have read many books on this topic looking for some sort of sanity. This book has simple advice and tools that are easy to apply for anybody willing to take that next step.
The tools to help me progress in life.......2006-04-15
Dr. Skinner wrote the keys to overcoming pornography addiction and very helpful exercises to self-evaluate your addiction status. If you do the things asked in this book you will find yourself looking back at memories in your life that have effected you but you did not realize it. It helped me find key insights on why I was drawn to pornography, that it was a synthetic negative replacement of what I was really looking for and that I would be far happier in life pursuing other fulfilling endeavorer.
so so.......2006-03-14
this book is great if you or your spouse has a serious addiction to pornography. it helped me to understand what it is men go through. however my husband didn't fit into any of the 7 levels the book presents. so i was a little disappointed because we both felt like he couldn't really relate to what the book was talking about. the questions that they have you ask are great though. my husband has a hard time talking about his feelings and the questions really helped open up some doors. overall, it was worth the price, and does have some great information.

Book Description
Sexual icon Jenna Jameson, the most famous female adult entertainment star in history, steps further into the mainstream spotlight with this beautifully written, designed, and photographed tell–all sexual autobiography.
With the help of writer Neil Strauss, porn superstar turned mainstream sex goddess Jenna Jameson has created an unforgettable autobiography that is many things at once: a titillating sexual history, an insider's guide to the secret workings of the billion–dollar adult–film industry, and a gripping thriller that probes deep into Jenna's dark past.
The tales begin in the underbelly of Las Vegas, a cesspool of strip clubs, tattoo parlours, murder and shoot–outs that turned the gawky brace–faced Jenna Masolli into the bombshell Jenna Jameson, one of the most recognised women in the world. Most of these stories Jenna has never told before, for fear of having to spend the rest of her life living in their shadow.
Jameson rebounds in the adult–film business, where she encounters sadistic directors, experienced lovers of both sexes, rock–star lovers, bitter rival starlets, and, finally, glory when as a relative unknown she seduces the international media at the Cannes Film Festival and goes on to become the biggest star the porn world has ever seen.
Along the way, Jenna provides insight into the closed world of the adult entertainment business.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-09-29
This book was wonderful! I couldn't put it down. It kept my attention from start to finish, which is rare. Im not a big reader, but it pulled me in. It is basically Jenna Jameson's biography. What a dark and crazy life she led. Working her way from the bottom to the top of the porn industry. Learning about life as she went along. I would recommend this to anyone who would read on such a taboo subject. It was a great find for me.
Jenna's Misadventures.......2007-09-28
I don't remember tips on how to make love like a porn star, but I do remember this book detailing Jenna's life's journey. Her adolescent years may have been dysfunctional, but her teenage years were the real mess. She got into trouble with boys b/c of sexy clothes and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. She got into drugs, she dated the wrong men, she made poor career choices...or did she. After reading her book you realize this young woman may have gone through a whole hell of a lot but she's actually quite strong and smart enough to recognize an opportunity staring her in the face...like running her own porn empire. It's a big book with loads of color pictures and excerpts from her journals that will keep you engaged for hours. Oh Jenna.
Honest Account.......2007-08-12
Although the title is provocative and misleading, this is an autobiography of the leading actress of the adult-film industry. We are treated to an honest account of her ups and downs, and an insider's guide to the secret workings of the industry. Often, her intelligence is surprising. The book closes with the very happy prospect for her husband, her pregnancy and motherhood. But we all know better. After this, she micarried and filed for divorce. It was then a replay of the sad events recounted here.
So, here is a girl who desperately needs to be happy but is somehow fated to fail. This is tragic.
Amazing Book!!.......2007-08-11
This is an amazing book to read. Jenna Jameson went through a rough life. I really would encourage people to read it!
JENNA.......2007-08-06
THERE'S SO MUCH GOING ON IN THIS BOOK,AND SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT-I CAN'T NARROW IT DOWN.EVER SINCE SHE WAS A TEENAGER,SHE'S WORKED SO HARD TO GET TO WHERE SHE IS TODAY.SHE DID EVERYTHING ON HER OWN.SHE'S HER OWN PERSON.HER LIFE FROM CHILDHOOD TIL NOW IS VERY EXCITING,AND INTERESTING!SHE TALKS ABOUT THE DIFFERENT MEN IN HER LIFE THAT SHE HAD RELATIONSHIPS WITH.SHE TALKS ABOUT HER FRIENDS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK.SHE TALKS ABOUT HER FEELINGS ON DIFFERENT SUBJECTS.THERE ARE PAGES THROUGHOUT THE BOOK THAT SHE'S IN THE COMICS.THEY'RE VERY UNIQUE!THE PICTURES IN THIS BOOK ARE SO VIVID!THE PICTURE OF HER AND HER MOM IS SO SPECIAL!THEY LOOK SO MUCH
ALIKE!JENNA DOESN'T TAKE HER FAME,AND FANS FOR GRANTED.I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT AS BEAUTIFUL AS SHE IS,AND HOW FAMOUS SHE IS-THAT SHE'S NOT A STUCK UP,OR THAT SHE DOESN'T SAY TO HECK WITH EVERYBODY.SHE'S SUCH A SPIRITUAL,THANKFUL,AND APPRECIATIVE PERSON OF EVERYTHING SHE HAS,AND OF ALL HER FANS.DEFINITELY GET THIS BOOK!I CAN'T PUT INTO WORDS HOW GREAT THIS BOOK IS,AND HOW GREAT JENNA IS!JENNA HAD ALOT OF HARDSHIPS IN HER LIFE IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS-BUT NO MATTER WHAT,SHE DID WHAT IT TOOK TO GET TO WHERE SHE IS TODAY.

Laura Kipnis, who teaches film at Northwestern University, adopts an unpopular stance: that of speaking for those whose sexual tendencies stray from the acceptable path. As such, she adds a different perspective in the always-raging debate on the role of pornography in America. Among her arguments is that pornography is often overlooked as a class issue, couched instead almost always as a morality matter. Realizing that many of those employed by the sex industry and those who support it are separated by class from those who deem it so unsavory, provides a particular insight into the perspective of those sitting in judgment.
Book Description
In a book that completely changes the terms of the pornography debate, Laura Kipnis challenges the position that porn perpetuates misogyny and sex crimes. First published in 1996, Bound and Gagged opens with the chilling case of Daniel DePew, a man convictedâin the first computer bulletin board entrapment caseâof conspiring to make a snuff film and sentenced to thirty-three years in prison for merely trading kinky fantasies with two undercover cops.
Using this textbook example of social hysteria as a springboard, Kipnis argues that criminalizing fantasyâeven perverse and unacceptable fantasyâhas dire social consequences. Exploring the entire spectrum of pornography, she declares that porn isn’t just about gender and that fantasy doesn’t necessarily constitute intent. She reveals Larry Flynt’s Hustler to be one of the most politically outspoken and class-antagonistic magazine in the country and shows how fetishes such as fat admiration challenge our aesthetic prejudices and socially sanctioned disgust. Kipnis demonstrates that the porn industryâwhose multibillion-dollar annual revenues rival those of the three major television networks combinedâknow precisely how to tap into our culture’s deepest anxieties and desires, and that this knowledge, more than all the naked bodies, is what guarantees its vast popularity.
Bound and Gagged challenges our most basic assumptions about America’s relationship with pornography and questions what the calls to eliminate it are really attempting to protect.
Customer Reviews:
This is the future of porn studies.......1999-06-19
The author of the Kirkus Review (above) states that Kipnis's work would be "more at home at an MLA conference," while at the same time he contends her work is "not likely to inspire the dawning of a new era of pornography studies." But what could signal the dawning of such an era as well as a presentation by Kipnis at an MLA conference? You can't have it both ways, Kirkus.
Besides, Kipnis's essays are not written in the complicated intellectual prose of typical MLA fare. They are very accessible, and due to this fact they were able to open my mind to thinking about pornography in a way I never had before: Why, among all commodities, is porn singled out (as are few others) for specific questions about its moral value and societal worth? And what are the class issues embedded in the porn industry?
Although this chapter strayed a bit from the porn theme, the most enlightening in the piece for me was the chapter on how our culture views fat and fat people. Kipnis talks about cultural taboos and reasons for the demonization of the fat in a way that I've never seen done before. She makes the reader understand why people hate you if you're fat, and why prejudice against fat people is one of the few remaining culturally-sanctioned prejudices, even for the politically-correct, along with classism and prejudice against the mentally ill.
Contrary to Kirkus's view, Kipnis's work is definitely groundbreaking and may lead to further intellectual investigations, into porn, on a level never seen before.
An eye-opening, mind-expanding look at "filth".......1996-11-26
Kipnis adds her distinctive study to the growing chorus of books by women that have defended and explored pornography dispassionately in the last five years. (See, for example, Nadine Strossen's _Defending Pornography_ and Wendy McElroy's _XXX:A Woman's Right to Pornography_.) Kipnis takes as her jumping-off point the case of a gentle, well-behaved gay man who was given a long jail sentence for responding to fantasy bait concocted by the FBI on the Internet; somehow, discussion (read: Orwellian "thought crime") of sex and murder of children translated to hard time in jail. Mere ideas are NOT innocent in this country, after all. [But why don't we jail authors and fans of murder mysteries and true crime books, or at least TRACK them?) She goes on to study the odd byways of pornography: magazines of nude and copulating fat people, geriatric porn, transvestite pornography. If you've never seen such material and tend to assume it must connect to mental illness and criminality, Kipnis will give you much to think about. Her discussion of the ideology and techniques of Hustler magazine is nothing short of brilliant, even for the men -- and we are legion -- who have always found the magazine disgusting or beneath notice. A welcome addition to the public debate over durdy peek-chures

Customer Reviews:
This book covers it all.......2007-08-25
As the spouse of an internet-porn addict, this book explained exactly how I felt and helped me to understand how my spouse felt when he was trapped in the Net. The best part about this book is the explanation of how the difficult journey to freedom will be worth more than the temporary and ultimately devastating "high" that users are addicted to. It also shows users how this seemingly harmless pastime can lead users to become someone they don't know or never thought they could become-doing things that stand against their own moral standards. It is brilliant.
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-29
This is a great resource for people dealing with online sexual compulsive addictions. Whether its you or someone you love, this book helps navigate through the confusion associated with the addictive behaviors. Many books just touch on the subject, but this one really focuses solely on the topic. It covers everything from diagnosis to recovery. Patrick Carnes is a straight forward, no nonsense Dr. The book is well written and a fast read, no need for a PhD in order to understand it. Finally a book that offers hope and relief! I'm greatful to have found it.
Excellent information; not enough to fight addiction.......2007-03-09
This is a fantastic book that takes the reader into a detailed explanatation of what this addiction really is. Mr. Carnes explains the factors and processes that affect the addict by also giving examples of behavior and describing patient's stories. For those trying to get a more comprehensive understanding of the addiction as well as the issues that prevent an addict from freeing him or herself of it, this book is excellent.
Just one note of caution: As much as this book as well as others by the same author are great resources, they are not enough. As with every addiction, there is a "cleansing" process that must be followed, and should be guided under the supervision of an experienced professional. Also, people in this addiction should seek a support group, such as the SLAA.
Help With Online Pornography Addiction.......2007-01-21
This book is up-to-date on a topic that until more recently went unrecognized as problematic. It can be beneficial for professionals working with a client population that participates in a variety of compulsive or addictive online sexual behaviors and who would like to reduce or eliminate these compulsions and addictive behaviors. It can also be recommended to clients for their own use. It helps in determining if a problem exists with use of a screening test, how to set up healthy boundaries, and help with relapse prevention. It can be especially beneficial when paired with a workbook on breaking free of compulsive online sexual behaviors. This book, by reputable authors, provides information & help designed especially for this population and for professionals attempting to help.
Good book, terrible problem........2005-11-18
This is a very useful book if you have a problem, or even think you might, with regard to compulsively searching for and/or using internet porn, chat rooms, etc.
I would also like to mention, in light of the fact that one of the authors, David Delmonico,Ph.D., lives here in Pittsburgh, that there is an active SLAA (Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous) that can help individuals break this addiction and find a new, happier, healthier way of living. It can be contacted through http://www.wpa-slaa.org

To everyone reading this now, I'd just like to leave with the thought that life CAN get better. And you don't have to try and change for the rest of your life. You only have to try to do better for today....

Book Description
This collection of essays seeks to expand the parameters of the debate on pornography. In an effort to move away from the divisive frameworks of which side are you on? and who counts as women worthy to be listened to? in feminist debates on pornography, this volume seeks to understand what pornography means to those who consume it, fight against it, work within it, and to those engaged in changing its meaning. By opening up a space for divergent points of view to address the complexity of sexual material, this volume seeks to forge solidarity amongst a diverse array of constituencies, including academics, activists, and sex workers from diverse socio-political contexts. Through seeking to address the relationship between imperialism, the exotic, and the pornographic, the collection moves away from Eurocentric perspectives on pornography, by including the perspectives of women involved in struggles for national liberation in the South. This volume explores a wide range of issues, such as, how the meaning of pornography is shaped by changing historical and political realities; the role law should play, if any, in the sex industry; whether union organizing can change the working conditions in the sex industry; kinds of representational politics available for redefining pornography; and how sexually explicity literature, videos, art, and music can serve the purpose of sexual freedom. Contributors to the volume include Diana Russell, Catharine MacKinnon, Andrea Dworkin, Wendy Brown, Becki Ross, Mallek Alloula, M. Jacqui Alexander, Victoria Ortiz, bell hooks, Rey Chow, Judith Butler, Candida Royalle, Zoraida Ramirez Rodriguez, amongst others.

Knowledge-raising, questioning and problematising.......2005-12-27
Drucilla Cornell has gathered immense quantities of essays in order to cover the relationship between feminism (as academic discipline and political theory) and pornography. The essays cover a very broad aspect of pornography, which for many can only be pictures/films containing explicit sexual acts. The essays give the following aspects of pornography:
1) prostitution (V. Ortiz' essay about Cuban policy)
2) lesbian and gay erotic art and literature (A. Hollibaugh on Christian extremists and vaginal fisting and B L Ross' on the erotic magazine Bad Attitude and its closing down by law)
3) the issue of ethnicity (K. Mercer on Mapplethorpe's exhibition on black men and homosexuality, L. Loots on South African policy and pornography or P. Esterházy on Hungarian pornographic industry)
4) radical feminism (a whole part is devoted to the Dworkin & co and their antagonism towards pornography, more than 154 pages. From another part in the book, W. Brown's evaluation of the Dworkin's argumentation is worth reading! )
5) Obscene language and subordination in literature (K. Grenshaw on 2 Live Crew and their music or R. Chow analysing a story about a Chinese girl)
6) Female sexuality and pornography's role (a whole part is devoted to this issue, among others A. Lorde about erotica and power)
7) Pornogaphy as phenomeon in our sexuality (see 6), D. Cornell writes here about its temptation)
The list can go on. As you can see I have chosen another way of categorise the book. It is divided in five parts and my division above can be seen as a cross section. I will present the five parts and describe how they tackle pornography. Two disclaimers though for those who buy this book:
1) It is a highly academic and philosophical work and some essays do need to be re-read, like Mercer's and Brown's
2) It DOES NOT contain any sort of pictures depicting sexual acts. There are some examples of 19th century photos of North African women and some excerpts from the Bad Attitude magazine (bondage). So there is nudity and semi-nudity of women only.
Cornell has chosen to start with radical feminism and its anti-pornography stand. For most of the people in the industry or in general radical feminism has overshadowed all the rest of the feminismS, such as socialist, liberal etc. The first part essays, mostly by Dworkin and McKinnon are about the freedom of speech aspect and how it cannot be used for protecting pornography. It is also about the causality issue: that pornography leads to rape, abuse and killings. This part is very revolutionary, sombre and pessimistic about women's future, men's role and of course the society's responsibility. The solution is only to ban. The essays illuminate very well this standpoint. In Sweden pornography is legal and is sold in many stands. Prostiution is lega but not buying sex. In Sweden we believe that it is the DEMAND that is the problem and when that DEMAND has vanished, prostitution dies of itself. We have also laws against people dealing with trafficking - which today exists in minor scale in Sweden, because of the anti-buy law.
The second part is the moralistc perspective, ie. moral conscious human beings cannot use pornography and of course the "popular" Christian ethic shines thru this discussion, in many ways restricting "art". And the essays here are examples of this restriction, one of those is the Bad Attitude essay and 2 Live Crew. Brown's philosophical evaluation of Dworkins & co:s world view is a strong voice in this debate.
The third part is more historical and societal. It is about the mentioned Cuban policy and also M. Alloulas chronicle about 19th century pictures of North African women - what do they really tell. The remarkable English of Alloula made me read the chapter again. A picture does say a lot - about the object, the invisible subject and its context.
The fourth part focuses more about art and literature. The Mapplethorp's exhibition becomes in both Mercer's and Butler's essay a massive package confirming racial prejudices and male power. It says a lot about how we as artists re-create tendencies, bad and good, and call it art - which it also becomes.
The fifth part is perhaps what most of first time readers would have expected of this anthology - pornography's interaction with humans, what it promotes about women's sexuality and what women should promote about their own sexuality. As always different authors come into picture, the Hungarian and US industry are in focus - also the Thailandese.
What these essay illuminate is the difficulty of the subject - its more grayish tones, and not so much its either-or standpoints. The fact that the authors are from different parts of the world, and cover all aspects of pornography makes the book holistic and worth reading. The normal Hollywood film or the ad about soaps and schampoos becomes a part of the pornographic system -and not only the typical nakedness. What is art - who decides what sexual expression is the right one and me owning my body - what does that mean?
The following conclusions can be drawn:
1) the discussion of a broader definition of pornography is needed
2) the change should be made in the industry today
3) we, as passive or active consumers of pornography, should be aware of its complexity and not only take sides, against or for it.
4) We, as passive or active consumers of pornography, should be aware of the system behind pornography, our view of what is women and men, what is normal and abnormal, all becomes the device of the director, becomes the money of the women trafficker and of course ....
Good luck reading it!
Great for a survey course or just getting started..........2002-02-07
This was the textbook for a graduate course, "Issues Surrounding Pornography" at my university. I found it to be a thorough, multi-faceted exploration of the adult industry, feminist theory (both anti-porn and anti-censorship) and the wide range of opinions and thinking on this hot-button issue. This book also includes writings on the politics of sex work. Were I the editor, I would have included Laura Mulvey and I would have included more writings about sex workers lives from the point of view of the sex worker herself/himself, as well as more pro-sex work writings. The book seems to have mainly anti-sex work writings. I would have balanced it out more. This is easily corrected by a savvy professor who can assign extra readings from a book such as "Global Sex Workers" or "Whores and Other Feminists." Overall, it's a excellent resource, one I refer to again and again as I write on the subject.
A great collection about feminist views on porn........2000-09-05
This is the best collection of its kind, and perhaps the only one to deal directly with the issue of pornography from a feminist view-point. Sure, some of the same issues and perhaps even the same essays can be found in other feminist studies anthologies, but this 600 page book has everything written to date of importance on the subject in one neat package. Drucilla Cornell is a great writer, and its good to see an inclusion of Catharine MacKinnon-who started the whole idea of feminist inquiry into porn-in her anthology, despite epistemological differences between MacKinnon and Cornell (see Cornell's book Transformations for more about that).

Book Description
When Ayn Carrillo-Gailey confronted her boyfriend about his porn habit, he pronounced her "pornophobic." Determined to prove she wasn't phobic, simply more enlightened, Ayn set out to learn all she could about this phenomenon. Like any good researcher, she added her new quest to her daily To-Do list:
1. Drop off dry cleaning
2. Call Mom
3. Visit sex toy store on Melrose
Acting as an amateur anthropologist introduced Ayn to a world populated by everyday people. Her quest aroused the curiosity of her female friends: her knitting group quickly turned into informal information sessions, as the womensingle or married, involved or notwere desperate for information.
What does XXX mean vs. un-rated?
What's the difference between topless dancers and strip clubs?
Why is some of it actually not that stimulating? And why are men obsessed with it?
Along the way, Ayn ditched the porn-obsessed boyfriend, and learned that one should not try to make change from a stripper's G-string tips, nor is the Hustler store the best place to make a first impression on a hot guy. Pornology is the result of one woman's quest to pierce the veil that modestly covers something many women actually want to know about. Suprising, hilarious, informative, and ultimately non-judgmental, this narrative is one readers won't put downonce they admit they're curious enough to pick it up!
Customer Reviews:
I laughed out loud!.......2007-09-11
I truly laughed out loud while reading parts of this book. I wouldn't say it groundbreaking, but it's an enjoyable read.
Entertaining and easy to read.......2007-08-30
This is an excellent summer read, with elements of laughter and disaster. It seems like a lot of the situations are real, but I can imagine that they are overdrawn to make the reader laugh.
All in all, it's a light-hearted and funny book, not master literature, but nobody is expecting that.
Hilarious and happy-making!.......2007-08-23
I really enjoyed this book much more than I expected. I found it by chance while browsing in the library and didn't realize how funny it was going to be! I laughed out loud several times, so hard I could barely keep reading the rest of the scene sometimes. It was in the non-fiction section, but in the small type behind the title page, it said that certain situations were altered for dramatic effect, so it's hard to know what was really true. It seems like the overall storyline and characters' relationships were probably close to the truth, which made me smile at the end. As a Chinese American, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the writer was also (half) Chinese.
Hilarious!.......2007-08-22
When Ayn Carrillo-Gailey's boyfriend accuses her of being pornophobic, she sits down and creates a "porn to do list." It includes visiting a strip club, testing vibrators, and ten other items she, as a self-described "good girl", is curious about but has never experienced. The result is this book; a laugh-out-loud memoir of her journey through the adult entertainment industry.
Her writing is honest and she, along with her always entertaining friends the Naughty Knitters, hold nothing back as they explore subjects that are sometimes taboo and always interesting. You'll learn what goes on behind the scenes at a brothel, how much you should tip for a lap dance, and that laughing during sex is a good thing!
One chapter worth mentioning is when she was inspired by Morgan Spurlock's documentary "Super Size Me" and decides to consume nothing but porn for two weeks. She turns off NPR and tunes into Howard Stern. She is coaxed into eating lunch at Hooters by a friend who insists she should eat at "porn-related food venues." Finally, she receives over 100 porn videos from her supportive friends with imaginative titles like Clitty Clitty Gang Bang and A Clockwork Orgy, that are playing almost constantly. In the end, she's a little burnt out and a box of porn has crashed down on top of her latest crush, but she's found out a lot more about her own desires. She's also inspired by her latest experiment, and invites the aforementioned crush to a viewing where she is greatly rewarded.
Overall, the book is a quick, entertaining read that I would recommend to anyone who is curious about the sex industry or just looking for a good time!
LOVED this book.......2007-07-31
What a great read. I laughed aloud so many times my husband demanded to read the book the second I finished. I will never think wheat-free waffles or porn in the same way again!

Book Description
In this now-classic study, Linda Williams moves beyond the impasse of the anti-porn/anti-censorship debate to analyze what hard-core film pornography is and does--as a genre with a history, as a specific cinematic form, and as part of contemporary discourse on sexuality. For the 1999 edition, Williams has written a new preface and a new epilogue, "On/scenities," illustrated with 25 photographs. She has also added a supplementary bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
an ok read.......2007-03-19
Hardcores author like to use big words and confusing dialog to get her point across. This is a good book if you can get through all the muddle and crap to get to her point. The book definetly reads like a college textbook and it does get tediouse at times. A good book if you have patience
It's not a monolith, it's a muddle.......2005-11-17
Williams' claim is that all porn is not the same, but her book title is very specific which would lead one to believe she will make claims about only hard core and not about the attendant debates over all of porn's place in society.
You have to be suspicious when the majority of reviewers of an academic book have not graduated high school. I can barely get my university students to read academic writing.
blah blah blah.......2005-04-06
The writing is jagged, superfluous and constantly filled with statements on what the author is intending to say in the book without actually saying it. This book is boring, hard to get through and organized in a questionable fashion. Unless you need to read it for a college course I strongly recommend against it. Frankly I don't understand the other reviews on this page praising the book.
Interesting.......2004-05-08
This is an easy to read, comprehensive analysis of visual pornography. Williams is thorough and openminded, and clearly shows that this isn't a homogenous and stereotypical genre. On the contrary, she maintains that all trends visible in other types of movies exist in pornography as well. An interesting read.
eXXXtremely provocative.......2001-07-20
I should probably look more closely at the covers of the books that I am ordering online. Any reasonable individual might naturally assume a book entitled "Hard Core" would contain information regarding the apple harvesting industry; however, such is most clearly not the case with Doctor William's book.
Despite the initial mix-up, I found this work to be quite titilating. Prior to reading Hard Core, I was only familiar with pornographic films (or "pornos") as an avid viewer. Hubby Rick and I now devote a significant amount of money and time on pornos in the hopes that we might one day fully appreciate, as does Linda Williams, the pornographic film. And our marriage has never been better!

Book Description
Dr. Ted Roberts found Christ in the skies over Vietnam, where he flew life-and-death missions as a Marine fighter pilot. Unbeknownst to his wife, however, he also brought home from the war an addiction to pornography. Since his recovery, Dr. Roberts has spoken to thousands of men about similar problems, and he has reached an inescapable conclusion: Hell is using sexual bondage to tear the Church apart! Our world, our homes, our churches have become raging battlefields over this issue, and the Internet a stealth bomber from hell with pornography as its payload. More and more men-even Christian leaders-are fighting for their spiritual lives. Now churches can counterattack the enemy's assault with this effective battle plan and strategy for dealing with sexual addiction. It's a matter of spiritual life or death.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book on Sex Addiction.......2007-01-10
I have been using Dr. Ted Roberts book Pure Desire every since the first week we started sex addiction ministry. Dr. Roberts through his own experience and expertise wrote a book that explains exactly what is going on in a sex addicts life. I've heard remarks like: "It's like he is reading my mail when I read this book" or "this book has help me understand I'm not crazy or alone in my struggle". We require this book for all of our men who attend our recovery groups and I highly recommend it to everyone who thinks they may have a problem with sex addiction.
Spiritual healing for Sexual Addiction.......2007-01-09
This book is more than just about sex. It is very rich for men and women to read. It addresses issues of relationships with family and with God and how that relates to disfunction in sex and other addictions. We have read quite a few books like this and it is by far the best.
Pure Desire.......2006-10-29
Much needed information to help men and women to get out from under the bondage of pornography. A real problem in the family, husband & wife relationship, in the community, and in the individuals own moral, character, and mental health issues. A must read for everyone. For those trapped and for those who can help the trapped. It is written well. Informative, funny, interesting, and easy to read. It's hard to put down. Ted's transparentcy is the center of the success of this book. His openness is healing to those who need it most.
Reality.......2006-05-05
I love it when an author addresses issues that are rarely talked about, especially issued that are rarely talked about in church.
The thought life is the most private and secret area in our entire being. Unless you decide to reveal all that is in your mind, no one is going to know what lies behind the curtain. Yet it is right behind that curtain where most of the pain and damage begins.
Roberts boldly reveals the struggles he has had with sexual immorality, laying the foundation of his connectedness with more than half of the rest world. He does a great job at introducing possible ways of dealing with the skeletons in our closests and help bring them to the light of God for deliverence and healing.
Also recommend: "I'm Bored with Christianity" by Derrick Engoy
Compassionate, passionate, humorous, on-target.......2006-03-06
Ted's personal experiences both in his struggle with sex addiction and in his career as a pilot provide a compelling unity to this book. He has a passion for helping the many people who struggle with this problem, but who are not receiving the help where they should be receiving it -- from their churches, who have the truth of the Bible, but often don't focus it in this area.
The book has a dual-fold purpose. Foremost, to help the person caught in the bondage of sex addiction. Secondly, to sound a "wake-up call" to churches who are letting these persons slip through the cracks. It is effective on both counts, though I think Roberts sometimes tries to address both simultaneously, and would be better off focusing on the sex addicts as his primary audience, then addressing the churches in dedicated chapters toward the end.
It is an easy read -- he writes in a conversational and "story telling" manner. He uses humor frequently and in good taste to help break the tension of a tough subject. There are also some helpful chapters from his wife offering her perspective on what it's like to heal along with her husband.
I've read many books on the subject, starting with SLAA's big book, the SA white book, and Christian books such as Every Man's Battle (Arterburn and Stoecker), Faithful and Tree (Laaser), Not Even a Hint (Harris), and the Purity Principle (Alcorn). I found something helpful in all of them, but Roberts' is one of the best. It has the "empathy" of the secular 12-step "big book" literature on sex addiction, but goes beyond self-defined bottom lines and "God as I understand him" to a much more Biblically grounded faith and vision.
