Book Description

From one of the most acclaimed crime writers in America comes her most astonishing novel: a story of love, loss, death-and discovery.

Over the course of eight novels, Carol O'Connell and her protagonist, New York detective Kathy Mallory, have carved out a unique place for themselves. But all that has been prelude to the remarkable story told in Find Me.

A mutilated body is found lying on the ground in Chicago, a dead hand pointing down Adams Street, also known as Route 66, a road of many names. And now of many deaths. A silent caravan of cars, dozens of them, drives down that road, each passenger bearing a photograph, but none of them the same. They are the parents of missing children, some recently disappeared, some gone a decade or more-all brought together by word that childrens' grave sites are being discovered along the Mother Road.

Kathy Mallory drives with them. The child she seeks, though, is not like the others'. It is herself-the feral child adopted off the streets, her father a blank, her mother dead and full of mysteries. During the next few extraordinary days, Mallory will find herself hunting a killer like none she has ever known, and will undergo a series of revelations not only of stunning intensity- but stunning effect.

I am a huge fan of the Mallory books, but this story became a little obscure at times.

Still, as always, a good read

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read.......2007-08-08

I have been keeping up with the Mallory series since they began. I buy each new book as it becomes available. I absolutely loved this book. It had the right amount of intrigue and anticipation. I loved the epilogue. I was not expecting the outcome so it was a surprise. The only thing wrong with the book is that the epilogue kind of makes me worry that this may be the last Mallory book. I hope not.

5 out of 5 stars Love all this author has to offer.......2007-07-17

I have been digesting all of Ms. O'Connell's books this summer. "Find Me" is another exceptional book. She reminds me of a female James Lee Burke. I don't think this signals the end of a series but the beginning of another chapter in Mallory's life. I find her character very layered and I love this about Mallory. "Find Me" is just one of her latest journeys toward healing her past. I hope Ms. O'Connell keeps writing her Mallory books and I wish she would team up with James Lee and introduce Mallory to Dave Robicheaux.

5 out of 5 stars Number 9 and getting better all the time.......2007-07-01

For those who love Kathleen Mallory, and who doesn't, this is the natural progression of excellent mystery, interpersonal relationships and the psychological growth of the main character. There is plenty of police work and lots of information about what to many of us is a classic landmark, Route 66.

I've read them all and they just keep getting better.

5 out of 5 stars Mallory Rocks in Find Me !.......2007-06-12

I have read all of the Mallory books by Carol O'Connell. My favorites are Mallory's Oracle, Stone Angel and now, Find Me. Given her rough life between "almost 7" and 10 years old, it is amazing that Mallory even survived so that the Markowitz's could take her in and nurture her.

The stress of living her rigid life and being a Special Crimes Detective have taken their toll on Mallory. She had her supporters in Charles and Riker, even when they thought she was being bizarre. There were other supporters, friends of Markowitz, who cut her lots of slack because she is so brilliant at her job. I was getting worn down by Mallory fighting everyone in her life. In Find Me, Mallory "plays nicer".

I realized early that Mallory was on an exploration of Route 66 (because of her father's letters) that just happenned to coincide with the serial killer's life. "Sentimental" would be a difficult word to use for those who know Mallory. Being the great detective that she is, she modified her trip to help solve the Chicago murder mystery that she stumbled upon. No crimes like the little graves along Route 66 could go unpunished in her code of living. I had to take my time and read carefully, but still managed to finish the book in 2 1/2 days.

In Find Me, it looks as if Mallory may now have a life worth living. I would love to read more. There are so many possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2007-10-02

Germs Make Me Sick by Melvin Berger is one of the best books I've seen to educate primary grade children about viruses and bacteria and how they can make you sick -- and how you can make yourself well again. Sometimes, your Doctor will have to send a swab or a drop of your blood to a lab to see just the right way to make you well if your illness is caused by a bacteria or protect you from some diseases caused by a virus.

I am amazed at how well this scientific information is presented for young readers, and the follow-up with a section on The Rules for Good Health make this a must buy for parents.

4 out of 5 stars Love the cartoons, and I learned something too.......2007-03-25

Every illustration in this book is a cartoon, and in many of the illustrations a cat, dog, lion, or some other animal will make some kind of random comment. This was pretty funny, but not quite as funny as the cartoons in another Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book called Digging Up Dinosaurs.

According to this book, the sticky saliva in your mouth catches germs and prevents them from going inside your body to cause further damage. I didn't know that. Hope all the information is correct.

5 out of 5 stars When my kids were sick, this was one of two books we always read..........2006-06-23

My children, now 19 and 17, loved this book. I guess they were about 6 and 4 when I got it. Whenever they were sick, we read this book and a Sesame Street book called "It's No Fun to be Sick." Reading these books became a comforting ritual, as well as an easy way to learn some basic science.

3 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity to teach about hygiene.......2000-11-27

Although this book is thorough in describing the differences between viruses and bacteria, I think it misses an important opportunity to reinforce hygiene...wash your hands, cover your mouth etc. These are given a cursory review on the last page, with no accompanying illustration. I had hoped that this book would help my almost-4-year-old to understand how people get sick, how they get well, and how they can help prevent communicable disease to reinforce what I teach at home. I do not think that the authors did a very good job of meeting those expectations.

4 out of 5 stars An untimidating, practical account of germs for young reader.......1998-11-20

My three-year old son really enjoys this book. The book's fairly simple, yet informative account of how viruses and bacteria can make us sick helps to make the abstract concept of germs more concrete for him. As an added bonus, the book gives a plug for handwashing, covering mouths when sneezing or coughing, and not sharing cups that most preschoolers can benefit from. I must also confess that, despite having read the Times Science section for years, I learned quite a bit about viruses and bacteria from this simple, well-illustrated book. A good buy, especially for parents who field a lot of factual queries every day. The Let's Read and Find Out series is a great way to let someone else do the explaining for a change.

Book Description

In Katie Estill's beautifully written and riveting first novel, the young American protagonist, Sylvia, grieving over the death of her mother, flees to Greece to begin a new life. In Athens, in a vividly described cityscape, she meets a seductive Greek couple, the painter Ari and his beautiful, though schizophrenic young wife, Althea. Sylvia and Ari eventually become lovers. For Sylvia, the affair brings one revelation after another and draws her into a relationship with her lover's wife, whom she alternatively resents, loves, and attempts to protect. In a powerful and haunting climax, the three become irrevocably bound together in death and in life. Evening Would Find Me is both a love story and a portrait of the artist as a young woman.

5 out of 5 stars Those red triangles they put on trucks carrying..........2007-02-15

explosive material indicate that friction may cause an explosion. It is an old symbol and and old story, the love triangle. There is friction aplenty in this gorgeously written first novel set in Greece of the 60's and 70's. Images are drawn out so that the setting becomes character, and the narrator explodes from her hazy grief back into a vivid new life.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting plot, but had a few too many shortcomings.......2001-10-17

One might think that a love triangle between a young American woman, a Grecian painter, and his gorgeous wife would make too common a theme for a romance novel. Well, it does. Love triangles have been around since early writing, and are with us to this day all over television. Even so, author Katie Estill makes a decent attempt at producing an interesting story in her first novel, "Evening Would Find Me." Unfortunately, too many faults keep me from raving about this book. [Sorry to break the string of stellar reviews]

By telling the story in the first person, I can't help but think that the author has thrown herself into the character of Sylvia, a woman who flees to Greece after her mother dies. By page 16, she's falling in love with Ari, a painter who happens to be married to a goddess-like (of course), but schizophrenic woman, Althea. I won't go into details, but lots of juicy, emotional events follow, some with tragic consequences. Overall, it's an okay story that held my interest, but didn't move me very much in the end.

That Ms. Estill is enamored of Greece is obvious. Aside from having lived and traveled there for five years, she over-seasons her novel with as many Greek phrases, names of places, and food items as will fit in a little book. That may sound picky, but I would have prefered instead that the space be used for describing the Greek culture and/or developing characters. ESPECIALLY developing characters. In my opinion, the author shrouded the principal figures (and even the country) in so much mystery and enchantment that it was hard for me to know them. What about Ari's sister-in-law, Elena? She had an absolutely intriguing demeanor and could have been a fascinating force in this plot, but alas, there was more to be said about the quirky way Greeks like their coffee than about this interesting woman. Same for Sylvia's elderly neighbor, Mr. Lapidus.

It may sound odd, but I would have been happier with this story if it were longer (i.e., a more involved plot and deeper characters) and had flowed better between images and time frames. For fans of romance novels with lots of emotion and interpersonal conflict, this book will probably be to your liking. Better yet, it might actually provide a good basis for a screenplay. As for me, I felt like I was looking at a nice tapestry with too many worn-out spots.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Sizzler.......2000-12-07

Evening Would Find Me--one hot kiss of a tale by Katie Estill--makes a perfect holiday stocking stuffer, or Valentine's Day gift. Estill's first novel brilliantly portrays a young American who settles in Greece, determined to make her own way. Sylvia Harris, a college grad, still has much to sort out from her Ohio childhood--memories of her mother's alcoholism, her parents' divorce, her mother's death from cancer. Bright, passionate, she stumbles into a love triangle with a Greek artist and his lovely, deranged wife. The sensuous tussle, gorgeously orchestrated by Estill, climaxes in a whirlwind of sex, death, guilt, and redemption. The story takes only a few hours to read, but casts a fine, luscious mood that, for me, lingered for weeks.

5 out of 5 stars Great Images.......2000-11-30

The scenes and images in this novel are so vivid that they have stayed in my mind months after reading it-- pictures of a park in Athens, apartments, houses, cafes, the ocean. The story is of an ordinary life slipping almost unnoticed into extraordinary circumstances. There's an unobtrusive poetry in the writing and a keen sense of people as they are-- good and bad mixed together so that the same character is both admirable and wrong-headed at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars A modern Greek tragedy.......2000-11-25

I loved this book, maybe because it caused such an ache. A beautifully written, poetic jewel that uncovers so many of the pains that come with an ill-fated love.

Book Description

Hailed by the Washington Post Book World as "one of our era's most vital masters of the short form," Ann Beattie offers readers unforgettable glimpses of people coming to terms with the world around them. Most of the characters in Where You'll Find Me grew up in the 1960s and 1970s; when we meet them they are in their twenties and thirties and embody a curious, yet familiar, fusion of hope and despair. In finely crafted, often surprising narratives, Beattie writes of women nursing broken hearts, men looking for love, and married couples struggling to stay together.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, insightful and so very real!.......1996-09-05

Ann Beattie's very best ever! Mrs. Beattie has the power to capture the human spirit with words like a child with a butterfly net. Her stories expose a piece of truth that the reader will find lies well hidden within themselves. Each story not only provides insight into the life of a character who appears naked on the page in a brilliant light, but also forces an intraverted look at oneself. Beattie writes what we are afraid to think.

Book Description

Part memoir, part mystery, FIND ME is a compelling tale that will break readers' hearts even as it heals them. Told in Rosie's candid, moving voice, it is the true story of a friendship between a troubled young woman and a celebrity ob-sessed with helping her. As this bizarre relationship unfolds-and unravels-so, too, does Rosie's history, forcing powerful acts of remembering and reckoning. Through it all, we come to know the author on a deeply personal-and sometimes shocking-level as Rosie reveals not only the way the past transforms the present, but how a single stranger can spark irrational longings, profound obsession and, finally, the opportunity to put these forces to work in a healing way.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Strange and Disturbing.......2007-09-06

I like Rosie O'Donnell so I should be inclined to be a little biased, I guess that is what makes it a two star rather than a one.

The parts of the book about her childhood and whatnot are fine, but the story about Stacie is just creepy. I felt very uncomfortable that Rosie could have gone through all of this and actually be sane herself. I usually ignore all the bad things about her but after reading this and seeing what she responded to, I'm sorry to say but, she has deeper issues than those that she publicly admits to.

The book mixes random parts of her life in with the story of Stacie. Maybe I missed the "big picture" about the Stacie story. I found it utterly disturbing and was not left with a pleasant feeling until the very last page of the book. Parker says something that seems to "wake up" Rosie which very might well have saved her sanity because she was inappropriately and irresponsibly wrapped up in something that she should not have been in. She had kids and a partner to confide in and instead confided in a sick person.

Otherwise, this is a very short and quick read. I read it in less than 3 hours one night and the text is very very large so don't be fooled by the page count.

5 out of 5 stars She once was lost, but now she's found.......2007-09-03

"Find Me" is the rocky journey of movie star, talk show host, comedienne, mother, activist and my personal shero; Rosie O'Donnell. This is not the typical celebrity autobiography. Because, I'm sure by now you've figured out that Rosie isn't the typical celebrity. Instead, "Find Me" is a poignant tale of self-acceptance and is a story of both tragedy and triumph.

Rosie discusses intimately how she felt after her mother's devastating death. And how this effected her entire life. After she hit it big you would think that everything ended up happily ever after? Not so. In Rosie's world all that glitters isn't gold. Even after she becomes a big star she still has her crosses to carry.

Along the way, Rosie adopts her first child; a son. She also meets a very troubled woman that parallels Rosie's own life. Rosie ponders why she turned out rich and famous while her friend is battling a serious mental disorder.

"Find Me" like its author is truthful, unconventional, compassionate and incredibly riveting. Rosie is able to bring the reader in to her world, if only for a few moments because she is so fascinating and descriptive in her writings.

I was surprised that this book did not discuss Rosie's sexuality. (There was some vague hints but that was about it.) Because, I remember when the book was released Rosie also "came out" at the same time to her fans and TV audience. But I learned that "Find Me" is not about whom she goes to bed with or chooses to love. Instead, it is a triumphant story that describes how and why she became the sheroic woman of today. "Find Me" taught me a lot more, too. It taught me the importance of love and acceptance of others. And, it also taught me the importance of being and having a good parent because Rosie's childhood was ripped apart with the loss of her mother.

I am ashamed to admit, I used to despise Rosie O'Donnell. I listened to all the garbage cable news programs that were only too eager to drag her name through the mud for their own gain. But after I read Rosie's book and started hearing what she had to say (on her blog and when she was on The View) I learned that the real Ro, as she likes to be called, has zero resemblance to the nut the media tries to portray as her.

I can't wait for Ro's next book, Celebrity Detox: (the fame game). It comes out next month!

Even though I never met Rosie I now have such a familiar fondness and affinity to this warm individual that somehow manages to draw people to her, from all circles and all walks of life. She once was lost, but now she's found.

5 out of 5 stars Ro ROCKS!.......2007-07-13

Rosie O'Donnell is an amazing person and this book was very well written. Hard to put down and big on the WOW factor! Don't miss this read!

My wife and I are planning our vacation to Maine for late Summer '06. We enjoyed the book, pictures, and suggestions for "great pictures."

We followed his book to the letter and a great book with valuable infomation. Would recommend this book for anyone traveling to Maine and who likes Lighthouses. Wonderful and helpful tips.

4 out of 5 stars Good guidebook.......2005-09-07

This is a good guidebook. It has enough detail/description to allow one to rationally select "likely sites" without being overpowering. However, there are an number of annoying editing errors present. (For example, every time the text reads "this place is 0.05 mile beyond that place", what's really meant is "0.5 mile". This is wrong in every place it's mentioned!)

5 out of 5 stars You'll come home with prize winning photos!.......2004-05-30

David Middleton and Bruce Morrison have created a very insightful guide to coastal Maine photographic "hot spots". I am a professional photographer based in Maine, and while I am quite familiar with most of the places mentioned in this book I was pleasantly surprised to find out about others I had overlooked or was not aware of. (I also have a few secret spots of my own that did not crop up in the book..thankfully... but that's what makes this fun - a guidebook is best put to use as a springboard for further exploration.)

Photographers who live in Maine or are planning to visit coastal Maine will find much to enjoy here. You couldn't ask for a better resource. Even non-photographer types would do well to mine the gems of this book for general sightseeing and hiking tips.
Middleton and Morrison put you smack dab in the middle of great photo opportunities. A bit of a warning here: after you get a copy of this book you will feel a sudden and intense urge to be out on the Maine coast with your camera.

PS - Middleton's guide to Vermont photo sites is excellent as well.

Book Description

Do You Need Greater Self-Esteem–Or Something Else Entirely?

Western culture increasingly emphasizes the importance of self-love and self-esteem. Many of us believe we must “find” ourselves–and feel good about what we see–before we can experience significant spiritual growth. Focusing so much on ourselves, however, distracts us from pursuing the only source of true fulfillment. Do we, as God’s people, really need to love ourselves more? Or is there a wiser, biblical path that can lead us to joy that is not self-centered and fleeting, but God-focused and lasting?

Challenging the current fascination with self esteem, Leslie Vernick answers these questions and others that trip up Christians today. Offering surprising insights and practical helps that can make a real difference in your life, she shows how you can experience greater personal, relational, and spiritual growth while humbly adoring and glorifying your God.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Counsel.......2003-09-21

At last--an articulate voice of truth in the chaos of our me-first world. Leslie helped adjust my perspective as she took me back to scriptures dealing with "self-fulfillment" and "self-image." Her thoughtful, real-life book is full of sound-bytes. For example, in discussing joy (p. 31), she dismisses the world's definition (temporary pleasures or inner satisfaction of work or family), and says "Those are all wonderful feelings, but they are fleeting, meant only to be tastes of something that points us toward the greatest pleasures and joy of all--knowing the presence of God." The personal applications at the end of each chapter will drive home the changes we need to make in finding true, Biblical joy.

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Prose.......2006-08-08

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. What a pleasure to lose one's self into stories of transformation and transcendence. I felt my heart lifted at the end of each essay and a renewed sense of belief in the triumph of the human spirit. There is so much here. Each essay spoke to so many different areas of experience that are going on in my life. I got chills reading about David's adventures in Peru. I cried as I identified with the longing and honoring of his father, having lost my dad young as well. I gained a new perspective about authentic friendship from his lid illustration and I was thankfully reminded about the necessity of creating balance in my life in his chapter titled Taming the Tempo.
Where Regret Cannot Find Me is a welcomed addition in my classic spiritual library.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Grit and Grins.......2006-03-08

I think this is a gutsy book. Don't usually say that about a spiritual book but I just find this one unique in the way it deals with everyday subjects.
Was really caught up in the stories and found myself getting concrete answers for what I'm going through in my own life.
It was also easy and enjoyable to read. The "grin" part is because I found myself laughing out loud a few times.

5 out of 5 stars *****.......2006-02-17

sigh - not sure what to say but compelled to say something.
I am moved by this book in so many ways. I feel almost like a spy as I read some of these essays because they are so personal. I'm grateful that the writer allowed himself to "go there" because it makes me feel less alone and more hopeful that I'm moving in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2006-01-13

Where Regret....is a terrific, beautifully written spiritual odyssey of sorts. Packed with humor, vulnerability and enticing questions, I found it to be a page turner. Rev. Ault's writing is as charismatic as his live talks. I love reading about other's processes and the invitation extended to make their discoveries your own. I indeed discovered my own self and my own journey juxtaposed with his in so many ways. I love the simple, yet profound message he presents in regards to viewing what is working in the world and placing your energies there. We hear it, we believe it will be of benefit and yet somehow we never really emerse ourselves in the change. Ault's story provided me with TOOLS to keep my focus. I'm loving the process and grateful for this material.
To me it's a real inspirational classic.

5 out of 5 stars Oh my.....a delightful surprise.......2005-10-20

What an unexpected delight. Love the author but never anticipated LOVING the book as much. This book is a testament to how one's own life process, when told with such honesty can effect another and prompt positive change. I learned as much from one read as if I had gone on some vision qwest or sequestered myself on a mountain top. What is it that does it? It's the humor, the raw honesty, the diligent focus on truth and the gentle reminder that ALL IS WELL and will continue to be so if we just accept it and allow it to be our frame of reference.
May sound like a cliche' but it truly is a MUST-READ.

Book Description

The bear cub Teddy is a grumpy bear. Even though he had been a happy baby from a loving family, along the way he had lost his smile. He doesn't enjoy any of the things that usually make children happy, such as baseball, bike riding, rides at Playland, and swimming. Teddy tries real hard to find his smile, but nothing works, until he asks his grandpa for advice. Grandpa tells him that he can only be really happy if he makes others happy. Teddy can't understand how this will help, but he's willing to try. He goes home and starts doing helpful things for his family and for his friends at school. He quickly discovers that Grandpa was right—happiness comes by helping others. In this moving story by Carl Sommer, children will learn about caring, citizenship, and about one of the most important principles of living a happy life: helping others.

5 out of 5 stars Homeschool Mom.......2001-05-27

Everything about this book is terrific. The story line captures the attention of the children as well as teach them a most important life lesson. Children can be very self-centered and this book teaches that we can find happiness when we give to others in many different ways. Life shouldn't always be about what we can get, but about what we can give.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about values.......2000-10-09

What a super book to teach the values of helping, serving and respecting elders. Today, when kids seem too preoccupied with being entertained, this teaches that joy comes from helping others. I loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Can You Help Me Find My Smile.......2000-10-08

Can You Help Me Find My Smile was another one of my Carl Sommer favorites. The story is about Teddy the young bear who is grumpy and no matter how hard he tries he can't seem to find his smile. The help and advise from friends, even a new bicycle on his birthday doesn't seem to make him happy for long. After searching he finally seeks the advise of his grandfather. As Teddy discovers he finds his smile again by helping others. I would definitely recommend this book for elementary school children. This is a good lesson in wisdom, kindness and giving.

4 out of 5 stars I Found My Smile When I Read This Book.......2000-09-22

Can You Help Me Find My Smile? Is a wonderful way to get others to smile when it's read. Again, like Sommer's other books, the picture illustrations are so adorable and colorful. The detail is superb. It made me so glad to read that Grandpa helped his grandson, by teaching him the valuable lesson of helping others. It's the law of sowing and reaping that makes this book so true.

5 out of 5 stars Will warm the heart of a child!.......2000-09-15

This wonderful story has a valuable message for young and old alike. It is delightfully illustrated and will captivate any young child. In todays variety of high-tech toys and games kids often quickly lose interest and want something new. What a wonderful world it would be if they could learn the joy in helping others like Teddy did. A book you and your child will love.

5 out of 5 stars Book Description.......2001-02-07

From the ranks of some of America's most passive people, the Mennonites, sprang the intrepid Union general, Samuel K. Zook. Raised in the very cradle of freedom, Valley Forge, Sam Zook was a good friend and subordinate to another area hero, Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. While these two men came from similar and tolerant religious backgrounds, Hancock out of the Quaker tradition, they also enjoyed an uncommon areligious talent with their verbal oaths. Zook was a citizen soldier who found military strictures to be virtually second nature to his personality. Afforded only a modest education and raised in an agrarian atmosphere, he was introduced to the military by the local militia, which he joined as a young man. From his rich Teutonic heritage, Zook was inculcated with a strong dedication to detail and discipline, which aided his impressive technical ability, as witnessed by his noted accomplishments in the budding telegraph field. These were demanding traits that he carried directly into his ranks and onto the battlefield. But some aspects of his life, both civilian and military, were frequently dotted with important and consuming controversies which continued well after his untimely death. Zook's contribution to the Union cause was as great as anyone could demand or expect from any soldier. Leading the 57th New York and later, the Third Brigade, First Division of Hancock's Second Corps, his crowning military moments were at Fredericksburg, where the record lets us vividly relieve his horrible agonies of battle with all of their cruelties and passions. Then to Gettysburg with its ironies, confusion and human madness. Despite all of those trying conditions, there never was a finer moment for Sam Zook. Decisively defying orders on the second day of Gettysburg, he led his exhausted brigade across the open farmlands to aid the suffering ranks of the Third Corps, onto a small patch of lonely ground known only as the Wheatfield. While standing tall in his stirrups and positioning his men amidst a hail of shot and shell, Zook was brought down by a single bullet that would close the book on his brief life of only 41 years. Laid to rest in Montgomery Cemetery in Norristown, where he would ultimately be joined by Generals Hancock, Hartranft, McClellan and Slemmer, Zook was regrettably lost to the annals of history and the hearts of the nation. Today, our responsibility is to save the memory of all those who fought that horrible war and paid the sad, ultimate price. To further the knowledge of his contributions and to the impressive memory of Brigadier-General Samuel K. Zook, this volume is solemnly devoted.
