    Download Description

Professional media corporations have discovered streaming is a cheap and easy way to broadcast content, as a fee-based service or as a marketing and advertising vehicle for traditional media distribution outlets. Other industries have tapped its potential for distance learning, corporate communications or on-line media events, like a shareholder's meeting. Today's challenge is not can you build a system to deliver audio and video over the Internet, but should you. The Business of Streaming and Digital Media gives readers a concise and direct analysis of the successes to capture and the pitfalls to avoid as they build the internet-focused portion of their distribution system.

2 out of 5 stars Not useful for businesses with a general consumer focus.......2006-08-28

This book had one welcome feature that I have never seen before - the email, personal web site, and phone number of the author, Dan Rayburn. Unfortunately, while I read this book in order to better understand the business models involved with selling media online the content is almost entirely focused on companies that wish to use streaming media for internal purposes such as training videos.

While this is of course a perfectly legitimate application of streaming media, it is not useful if you are planning to serve a consumer market. Moreover, there are disconcerting moments within the text where a survey done by Rayburn's company is discussed at length, only to conclude that it was not definitive, and more work needs to be done to draw conclusions. That sort of prevaricating makes the entire book seem more like an extended white paper or MBA student report than a definitive guide by a knowledgeable expert. The common-sense advice of later chapters (know your customer, calculate an ROI, etc) does nothing to dispell this impression.

Overall, this book would be moderately useful for a neophyte looking to manage the implementation of an internal video streaming service. But if you are looking at the consumer market or you have basic business and technology experience, it provides little new knowledge.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2005-09-30

As President/CEO of my own company, I found this book invaluable. I've read other streaming video books and this roadmap for efficient and effective video delivery is the best I've read. The emphasis on ROI in the context of "cutting edge" technologies was perhaps the most beneficial attribute of the book to my company. That said, the A-Z mechanics of implimenting streaming video or improving one's existing streaming video business model were extremely informative. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering digital media or to those currently using the technology with thoughts of streamlining and economizing their existing video delivery process. Dan Rayburn a guy worth listening to!

I really liked this book. This book is very easy-to-use and has an easy-to-understand style. It provides Account Managers & Media Planners a working knowledge of the tools and analyses for which these technologies will affect running a new media department. The real world examples are priceless.

I found that it makes all the proper recommendations and that this book is a must-read for anyone in the Streaming or Web conferencing space.

I make it required reading for anyone on my sales or account management teams.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to the business of streaming media.......2005-09-19

There are far too few books out on the subject of streaming media, especially ones that are up to date after "the dot bomb" of a couple years back. Dan Rayburn's book is an excellent introduction to the industry for anyone trying to get his or her bearings. The study included in the appendix is also quite helpful and timely.

    5 out of 5 stars DRSULO.......2005-09-18

This is a must read for anyone evaluating whether or not streaming is right for their business regardless of their organizations size. It gives you examples, backed by case studies, what has worked and more importantly what hasn't. Knowing what to avoid while considering your options, in many cases is as important as how to go to market. Understanding that will enable businesses to deploy that much faster and begin taking advantage of this technology, enabling them to begin to monitize on their strategy. I look forward to future publications.

              Book Description

Digital television is transforming both broadcasting and, as a result of convergence, the larger world of communications. The impending analogue switch-off will have a major impact on households all over the developed world. Digital Broadcasting considers the effects of digital television on the availability, price and nature of broadcast services in the Americas, Europe and Japan. It shows how this depends upon what platforms - cable, satellite, fixed or wireless broadband - countries have available for use and also upon government policies and regulatory interventions.

The authors show how policies towards digital television are also closely linked with spectrum - for example, whether to use spectrum released from analogue broadcasting for mobile communications or for broadcasting, including the newly developed mobile broadcasting. This is one of the key technological changes of the early 21st century and its development will affect many countries' economies and societies. The book has an invaluably broad coverage of the economic and commercial issues involved in digital television in major regions and countries around the world.

Regulators, executives and consultants in the broadcasting and communications sector will find much to engage them within the book. Researchers and academics of industrial and public sector economics will also find the book of great interest. Students in media studies or business courses can also use the book as additional reading.

              Book Description

Until recently, profit in the television industry went to the owners of the conduit, the distributors of content. As the industry enters the digital age, the distribution bottleneck will disappear and be replaced by the content creators themselves. This book explains patterns of profitability from the golden age of television to the emerging digital age. Television today is not just 500 channels: it is countless millions of hours of programming stored on video servers around the world. For media companies wanting to create value in this new era, including the major networks, digital branding is key. Just as consumers manage to make their way in 30 seconds through a 100-foot aisle jammed with hundreds of boxes of cereal by reaching for a box of whatever name brand product they know and love, viewers will also navigate through the "vast wasteland" of content by returning to their favorite digital brand. This book provides detailed historical data, financial models, and informed discussion of profitability trends in the industry. It offers a framework for understanding and predicting profitability and describes the nature of branding as it applies to the television industry. It shows how a handful of dominant brands will emerge as sought-after organizers of content. Investors, industry consultants and executives, policy makers, students and academics will all find this book fascinating and informative.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must for understanding the future of television.......2001-01-17

Having spent much of my career in the television industry I found this book fascinating. I would be surprised if it did not, over time, become a secret playbook for those in the industry interested in getting a leg up on their competition -- or at least in understanding what the future holds. My only minor complaint is that some of the forays into high-level MBA-type analysis were hard to follow for someone without a background in economics. Yet those occasions were rare (two actually) and did not detract much from this otherwise thought provoking and well written book.

              5 out of 5 stars A concise and clearly-written analysis........1999-11-02

Mr. Todreas brilliantly slices through the mountain of speculative bunk written about convergent media. The author concisely argues that value in the Digital Television Era will shift from distributors to certain branded content creators and established packagers. Supported by easy to read tables and a relaxed writing style, Mr. Todreas scores solid hits up and down his analysis.

I recommend that all television and media professionals, as well as consultants, read VALUE CREATION to better understand their opportunities as we begin to break free of the distribution bottlenecks of the Cable Era.

5 out of 5 stars Explosive! This guy knows what's going on!.......1999-10-27

I normally choose books written by well-known authors. Timothy M. Todreas is not one of them.

What made me buy this book was the title, and its content: Just as mp3 and the Internet have revolutionized music and information, digital television will revolutionize the whole TV experience as well as the industry.

This book held me captive from page one to the end, because it holds the answers to so many questions in my line of work, which is a consultancy services for digital television!

I recommend it to anyone who is interested in where television is coming from, where it's going and what the h_ll you should do about it!
