Book Description

The bleak wilderness of America's 49th state challenges three women in different eras: Julie, a nurse, who must serve victims of a 1925 diphtheria epidemic; Beth, whose Canadian-born husband is killed in World War II; and Rita, who takes on the ultimate test of endurance, the Iditarod dog sled race. Each must surmount the obstacles of her life, and perhaps, with God's help, find true love as well. As a special bonus, 'Alaska' also includes Tracie Peterson's novella 'Christmas Dream.'

2 out of 5 stars Too much of the happy, sappy, goody-goody to be realistic........2007-08-31

I picked this book up because I'm going to Alaska and wanted to get myself excited for the trip; unfortunately, this book really didn't help much. Although it did get into the Iditarod, dog sledding, and blizzards, it really did not cover the culture of living in Alaska like I thought it would--and let's not even talk about the characters. As a Christian woman, some parts of the book (such as Rita Eriksson's fight to be independent of God) were definitely realistic; however, in the end it seemed as if every single character, even the less important ones, were model Christian citizens, and because of that these stories lost much of their [realistic] appeal.

5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Tale.......2002-11-15

I found this collection of novelas to be magnificent. I didn't want to put it down. At one point I acutally cried. The characters become so real to you that you are moved with their pain and elated in their victories. I also found them spiritually uplifting. Now I just wish I could go see the places that were so wonderfully discribed.

5 out of 5 stars Alaska.......2001-01-19

I do not read alot but I could not put this book down. I live in Alaska and have been in the same place as the charcter in the book. I liked the spiritual content too. Differently better than the trashy love novels you can buy.

5 out of 5 stars IDENTIFY WITH THE CHARACTERS.......2000-03-14

I liked the second story the best, because it really made me ask myself "What would I have done if I were in her situation? Would I have put God first? Would I have denied myself a strong opportunity like that because God said NO?" But I liked all four of them. They were realistic romance but not mushy or improper. A MUST-READ...YOU WON'T FORGET THIS BOOK AND (HOPEFULLY) THE LESSONS YOU LEARNED THROUGH PRACTICAL EXAMPLES OF SUBMISSION TO GOD.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......1999-12-02

This book seems to have all the love that the author has known in her heart. ..I really liked it and it made me think of my own life and loves. If you want to read a book that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift! This book was edited by Lupus specialist Dr. Matt Morrow too, and has the latest information on that disease. ..A perfect gift for someone who started college late in life, fell in love too late in life, is living with any illness, or trying to understand a loved one who is. . .A gift to be cherished forever.

Madeline Baker can write Native American romance better than anyone I
have ever read, because to her the story and the Indian hero are more
important than the sex. Hope to see a lot more from her.

Yuma Prison - Arizona Territory.
What a nasty Hell hole.
How does one survive the brutish mentality of the guards, especially when you know that you are not guilty of the crime for which you are incarcerated?

Four and a half years have led Nathan Chasing Elk to the point of trying to excape one last time. He has to find his daughter, he has not heard of her in almost 3 years.

Catherine Lyons is struggling to protect herself from Marteen the Apache who wants her for his woman while waiting for her brother, Mark to return. Well she has had it. She decides to strike out for Finley's Crossing and head east.

Marteen seems to bring Chasing Elk and Catherine together.
Catherine takes Nathan back to her ranch house. As time passes they are both under survalience by the Apaches and decide it is time to move out.

Chasing Elk can't leave Catherine behind as she seems to fascinate him. We get to follow them on a dirty, dusty trek across the Territory in search of Leah, Nathan's daughter.

Oh, oh Marteen is back.
Then a broken leg holds them up until there is danger of Nathan being recognized. There is another long trek to the Dakotas in search of Nathan's mother and her People.

This leads to a very important education for Cate and Leah when they finally find and make a summer home [after marriage]with Macawi and her family. Ah, but there is one more desperate rescue that Nathan must perform with the help of his step-father.

But, oh boy, Nathan finds out that Jim Buckner is in the vicinity and he decides to wreak his vengence on the man. Even bringing him in to the sheriff does not stop the miscarriage of justice once again. Will Nathan ever get to see Catherine and Leah again?

DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED [hey, no premarital sex and the story is still great.]

4 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2006-07-23

I couldn't put this book down. It is the first Madeline Baker book I have read, but it won't be the last. I really liked the way she tied in geographic history with a very exciting plot and a very sensual love story. I really appreciated that the characters had high morals and showed that you can have desires and control them until the proper time!! and find REAL love.

4 out of 5 stars tense Indian romance .......2006-01-03

It has been four years six months and counting since Jim Buckner arranged for Chasing Elk to be sent to Yuma Prison, a hell hole of abuse from the likes of guard Fat Tom. Only revenge and seeing his daughter Leah keeps Chasing Elk going. When an opportunity arrives to escape, he takes it, but is severely injured in the process.

With her parents recently dead and Apache Marteen wanting rancher Catharine Lyons as his woman, she so far she has refused him using the excuse that her man is coming for her though she knows she will not have much time left to say no. She either must return to Boston or he will take her as her brother Mark is no protection. When a near dead Chasing Elk reaches her ranch at about the same time as Marteen and his retinue of braves, she claims he is her husband. The stranger agrees. As Catharine nurses Chasing Elk back to physical health and he begins to work the ranch, an attraction between them arises. However, Marten wants him dead; the law wants him in prison; Chasing Elk wants his daughter; Catharine wants his love. However, first his mind must heal if he lives long enough.

DAKOTA DREAMS is a tense Indian romance starring a courageous heroine and a battered male with demons screaming at him to avenge the death of his wife and to bring his daughter home, which he wants to believe, is at Catharine's ranch. The character driven tale is loaded with plenty of action as the key players will converge in a showdown. Though the support cast seems somewhat one dimensional, Madeline Baker's latest nineteenth century star-crossed romance contains a fresh fun story line.

4 out of 5 stars Oh I love this series!.......2007-05-30

Lacy Brown grabbed this series and took off and I've been along for the ride every since. "Dream and Little Dream" finally brings us to Molly the reporter on the outskirts of the madness, but contributor to, nonetheless, and the elusive cowboy Bob. This was a fun one to read, as are all in this Mule Hollow series.

5 out of 5 stars Where there is no dream...........2007-05-02

I smiled, I chuckled, I laughed out loud at the antics of the heroine, Molly Popp, and the responses of hero, Bob Jacobs. I loved it when the cows drooled all over the front of her new VW convertible and when the lady with the van load of day care kids showed up I gut laughed. Bob ranted, "I was the field trip. Did you get that? I was the field trip!" He glared at her and held up a finger in salute. "With parental consent."

Oh this was such a good read. I read late into the night, sitting on the side of the bathtub so the light wouldn't bother hubby, and chewed my fingernails when Bob was trampled by that crazed bull. Oh my goodness, I'm ready to move to Mule Hollow myself.

You did good, Ms. Clopton. One question. Why didn't you call your heroine, Lori? Lol, just wondering.

3 out of 5 stars Girl Bikers, Reporters and Bulls - Oh My.......2007-04-20

"Dream a Little Dream" follows up the storyline from "The Trouble With Lacy Brown." I'd suggest reading the first book in the series as I had a little trouble putting the pieces together in "Dream a Little Dream."

Once I figured out the cast of characters I sailed right through "Dream." If you loved "Trouble"or like your romance full of cute humor and descriptions of a beefcake (pun intended - Bob's a rancher) I think you might enjoy "Dream."

If you've always wanted to be a reporter but haven't done anything about it, or love the idea of bottle feeding a baby calf, or are interested in rodeo, ditto.

Debra Clopton fan? I imagine you'll find much to like. I've not read her before but if you like sassy southern girls, yellow bugs, puppies and men with navy blue eyes, dark curls and dimples, well you might want to look into grabbing a few Clopton romances.

She plans to write interesting columns for the local newspaper that are so good they'll catch the eye of a prominent editor who will offer her a job on a big city newspaper and she'll be on her way up the ladder to success. Molly determines to help him reach that goal.

Bob Jacobs was upset about seeing his matrimonial ambitions written about in the Mule Hollow morning paper, and to tell the truth, he was a little bit scared by the horde of women stampeding into town bearing baked goodies and searching for love. Particularly when he has to rescue one from a riled bull. He knows exactly who to blame for his troubles too. That interferring Molly Popps who wrote the column destroying his privacy. When city woman, Molly, meets dedicated rancher, Bob, it results in an emotional explosion that threatens to rock Mule Hollow right off its foundation. Dream A Little Dream is a very entertaining story, and a lot of fun, too.

5 out of 5 stars Love's Unfolding Dream.......2007-04-11

In Book 6 of the "Love Comes Softly" series Janette Oke has helped her characters grow with new challenges and decissions to make. She continues to span the years with her characters. A must read.

4 out of 5 stars A Lovely Surprise for this Skeptic........2006-06-03

I have mostly shied away from Christian novels, especially Janette Oke's, but decided to pick this one up and give it a try. Instead of getting a preachy, dry as sandpaper story, I was surprised to get a nice, wholesome story of an incredibly warm and likable family full of strong characters and a good plotline.

I found the rivalry between the girls over the schoolteacher's son both humorous and as frustrating as Marty did, and liked the way Belinda's family subtley reached out to the Simpsons who were too proud to accept charity from any of the neighbors. My favorite characters in this book had to be Marty, Belinda, and her relationship with her older brother Luke as she learned nursing by doing. More than anything, I got Oke's unmistakable message in this book: When you want to win someone over to your beliefs, you don't ram them down their throats, but by patiently waiting as you set an example that will eventually draw them in.

5 out of 5 stars Good Story.......2005-10-24

The last 3 books in the Love comes softly series are my favorites. I can really relate to Belinda. I can remember feeling left out when the cute boy always nocited by friend. Also I often feel like I am not sure what to do next in my life. A very good story with a supprising ending that you wont want to miss.

4 out of 5 stars Belinda is a tenderhearted teenager......with nieces.......2003-08-14

Belinda is a teenager. Her closest friends are Melissa (her niece from the West) and Amy Jo the daughter of Clare. The three girls have very different personalities but all love each other...until....one handsome young man comes to their school. Knowing Jackson threatens their friendship for a time.

Belinda cannot bear anything in pain or dying, so she just naturally rescues whatever is maimed. This leads to her brother Luke asking her to help him in his doctor rounds. Belinda has found her calling even at her very young age.

The Davis family continues to be a Godly influence on their community and it zones in on the Simpson family. Young Drew, 17, is seriously injured in a logging accident and Dr. Luke is forced to amputate his arm. The results provide an exciting book to add to Oke's Love Comes Softly series.

5 out of 5 stars An aunt and two neices.......2001-01-01

Belinda, Clark and Marty Davis' late in life child is soft hearted, hates to see any living creature hurt or dead. Her brother Luke, now a doctor encourages her to become a nurse. He feels she has medical potential. Melissa, Belinda's neice comes from the west to finish high school and then later trains to become a school teacher. Amy Jo, Clare and Kate's daughter, who has a very close friendship with Belinda becomes especially close to Melissa and Belinda feels her and Amy Jo will no longer have the closeness they have once had. All three girls become involved with the sam guy.

5 out of 5 stars delightful and insightful.......2006-05-25

Who doesn't like Dvorak's powerful and heart stirring music. This book tries to show the same impact the man made on his family, colleagues and friends. Each chapter could stand on its own, with the characters voicing their thoughts and feelings about Dvorak in their own unique way, both in style and in feeling. I thought the novel expressed the overall feeling of a man of great humanity, humility and almost too ordinary to pay much attention to, while at the same time celebrating his genius. A subtle and insightful novel.

5 out of 5 stars Dvorak in love with America.......2002-04-25

Probably the highest compliment I can pay to this amazing book is that right after I finished it I started listening to Dvorak nonstop. So many themes are explored here, and each with disarming subtlety. Skvorecky is a musician with the pen.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely wonderful book.......2000-12-21

This book is told from the point of view of many different narrators, all of whom have some connection with Dvorak and his American sojourn. Some chapters are virtual novellas, others are just funny stories. As ever, Skvorecky's range is prodigious. He can speak with the voice of Czechs and Americans, men and women, blacks and whites, the old and the young. Dvorak himself is glimpsed only from the outside, by those around him, and it is not necessary to know more about him than that he was a great musician in order to enjoy -- and be moved by -- this comic novel.

If the Nobel Prize committee made decisions based on a writer's skill and range and mastery of literary form, Skvorecky would have won years ago. He's without doubt the funniest great writer alive. If you haven't read him yet, you have a treat awaiting you.

People magazine declared that "[Nora Roberts] is at the top of her game," and there's no greater evidence of that than these three novels. From the horse farms of Virginia to the rugged beauty of Montana to an island off the coast of Georgia, these novels showcase Nora Roberts's talents for intense drama, vivid characters, and fast-paced suspense.

You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.

3 out of 5 stars beware small type.......2007-01-15

i haven't finished reading even the first of these three books, but I am struggling to read the small, serifed type. I don't usually have any problems reading normal type, but something about the font and size of the type, combined with the large book is making this read a bit of a struggle for me.

So far, really like the characters and very typical Nora Roberts writing.

2 out of 5 stars If you like to read about a borderline stocker then..............2007-07-03

This story fits the bill. I did not like this story or the main charatcters Melanie and Winston. When the story begins the both notice how attractive the other is at the airport. They are both on their way to Tahiti and on the same plane. Winston is instantly attracted to Melanie and his attraction increases tenfold when he sees her on the same plane that he is on. Melanie thinks he is attractive but because of an abusive past relationship she is not looking for romance.

This is where it gets creepy. Winston sees her going to the bathroom he follows her and lurks near the restroom. He grabs her arm when she comes out and proceeds to come on very strong verbally. Then he kisses her. This was not romantic and frankly I found his intensity creepy. Now if a woman had been mistreated the way Melaine had for five years, she was abused emotionally, verbally and physically, his behavior should have sent her running. However, she takes it in stride. He doesn't tell her that he will be on the cruise with her and "surprises" her when the ship sails. The next day, now keep in mind he onlt met her yesterday he comes on stronger if that's possible. He creeps up on her, invades her personal space and touches her thighs! He is relentless.

Melaine has worked hard to regain herself esteem or so she says. She was angry with him and told him that she doesn't like deception or manipulation but still continues to let him do both. She had no self-esteem because if she did she would have never allowed him to do any of the things that he did. One scene inparticular that I won't spoil would have had any woman with an ounce of sense running scared.

In another scene he actually grabed her when he was angry with her and she was afraid? Nope. After what she had already been through she should have run for her life.

She was weak and still in her I want to please a man mode despite their (necessary part of most romance books) drama. She was willing to put up with too much drama from Winston just because he gave her the Big O.

Winston was a selfish, agressive, manipulator and I didn't find him an atrractive character. He maintained the charactistics through out the book. It was always about what he wanted and what he needed.

When I first received this book in the mail I grumbled about how short it seemed. When I started reading I couldn't wait for it to over. I finshed it because I paid $8.95 but I will never read another story by Ms. Love again.

I gave the book 2 stars only because Ms. Love's description of Tahiti was wonderful. To bad she couldn't put that same skill into her character development.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Fantasy..........2006-11-22

Book Description: First of the 4-part TLC Series of stories focused on love & exotic location.

Avoidance - Melanie McDoe Spent ten years loving a man who could only hate. The last thing she's looking for is intimacy on her research trip to Tahiti.

Denial - Winston Knioght is a pragmatic doctor who believed dreams of love were no longer probable, as evident by the drama causing girlfriend he purposely left behind when he went on a cruise vacation around the Tahitian Islands.

The Attractive Clash - The romantic comedy, WHEN DREAMDS FLOAT, plunges Melanie and Winston together and neither is prepared for the tidal wave of pleasure that pulls them together and threatens to wash away their past hurt, enabling them both to realize that dreams do come true

A wonderful fantasy. The author takes you on a beautiful vacation while telling a well written love story involving two people damaged from bad relationship. The is a short, quick, and very satisfying read.

"When Dreams Float" is one of the best books that I've ever read. I love it; it's wonderful... Great setting, great romance, great characters; just a wonderful book. Dorothy is one of the best writers that I know of. She does great work and I wish her so much success. If you haven't read, "Crossing Paths, Tempting Memories" you must read it. All of Dorthy's books are phenomenal!

My hat is off to Dorothy Love. I reveiwed this book for my book club "Avid Readers and Reviewers of Jacksonville", and found it to be very exciting and informative. It has a wonderful story line and is not a sleeper. People who still believe a little in romance will really enjoy it. I can't wait to read other books by Dorothy.

5 out of 5 stars A inspiring collection of light Christian fiction.......2007-02-23

The prologue of this book drew me in immediately. The three stories feature longterm friends who had become jaded about men, and about true love, due to harsh life-changing events of their childhood. The stories are only in the 75 page range, but each is a continuation of the one before it, so collectively they read like a regular full-length novel. That's an amazing feat considering that three different authors created this continuity! What I appreciate most about Love Inspired books is the respectful and communicative way the characters interact with each other (no hostile bickering), and the mature approach they have to resolving their problems (no game-playing). These admirable characteristics had a strong presence in this anthology!

What impressed me about Lyn Cote's story, Wed by a Prayer, is that the romance was secondary to the mentorship of the male protagonist's orphaned pre-teen sister. Jo and Bram fell in love as they worked together to be a positive influence on Tassie. The setting, a floral store in danger of being put out of business by a ruthless competitor, provided a colorful backdrop and a level of intrigue. At times, the dialogue seemed a bit unnatural and unrealistic and it was difficult to warm up to Bram after he had been so haughty in the opening scene. As one who is very disillusioned by trend of children nowadays to address adults by their first name, I was highly impressed that Jo was "Miss Jo" to Tassie! Very classy!

The Dream Man by Lenora Worth is edgier than the other stories. Elizabeth is very uptight; prickly and guarded against interacting with attractive men like Jake. The relationship in this story begins on shaky ground, and unfortunatley Elizabeth inflicts Jake with tense verbal sparring that was pleasantly absent from the other stories. It is difficult to like her or to believe that she deserved Jake. Impressively, Jake shows remarkable patience and good humor thoughout Elizabeth's defensive, and somewhat obnoxious, behavior. When his background is revealed, illustrating the necessity not to rush through life nor place too high a value on monetary success, Elizabeth's bitterness can't help but fade away as her heartened heart softens. This powerful lesson makes the story shine in true Love Inspired fashion!

During the latter half of the previous story, it was easy to guess who Hannah's unlikely soulmate would be in Small-Town Wedding by Penny Richards. Forgiveness, especially of oneself, is a difficult journey for all of us, and this couple illustrated the necessity of letting go of misplaced anger in order to find happiness and peace within. Although Hannah held a lot of resentment towards Griff, he confronted the issue head-on, and they were able to quickly resolve their issues in a compassionate and respectful manner through open dialogue. I am impressed with the maturity Hannah showed in admitting she was wrong and apologizing, not only to Griff, but also to her friends Jo and Elizabeth. Once again, it was very classy that the older generation were addressed by the protagonists as "Mr. Harold", "Miss Margaret", and so forth. This story was "Love Inspired" at its finest!

    5 out of 5 stars Friends Forever.......2005-07-23

Three friends, who remain friends forever. Three heartwarming stories about love and healing. I always know I will be delighted by any story that has the name Lyn Cote on it. My favorite author.
