Customer Reviews:
Standard for Broadcast News.......2007-03-05
If you're trying to break into news on the AM/FM dial, this is a book that you must read and follow. It helps you format the way most of Radio Broadcasting does it today.
If you're a serious journalist, this book is a must........2005-08-10
This is the bible of broadcast news writing. Well organized. I'm a 25 year veteran of broadcast news and I still find information in this book that improves my writing and reporting.
Broadcast newswriting for the professional.......2002-07-16
Merv Block was himself a newswriter. He wrote for Cronkite and others; his experience is unquestioned.
Block's book, and Bliss's book(Writing News for Broadcast, Columbia University Press) are, in effect, the bibles of broadcast newswriting.
Block gives his own tips, and also shows how it's done by taking broadcast scripts apart and correcting them.
There is no better book for the professional newswriter.
can't live without it!.......2000-03-27
Ten years ago, I had the privilege of taking introductory radio writing from Mr. Block while earning my master's degree in journalism at Columbia University. If memory serves, Mr. Block also revisited my spring semester radio news course as a guest editor and instructor. He was a tough and fair instructor -- one of the many highlights of my year at 116th and Broadway.
Mr. Block's book has been indispensible to me ever since. Every so often, I reread a chapter to keep my writing fresh, and to jolt me out of the workaday rut so many reporters and anchors inhabit. Television news works on two levels, the words and the pictures, and it is a challenge and an art to make the two levels work together!
Whether you're a journalism 101 student or a seasoned professional, it never hurts to have this book on your desk (and occasionally at home!). Your viewers, producers, photographers, and managers will thank you!
Broadcast Newswriters: You Need This Book.......1999-07-14
To paraphrase Mr. Block, "if newswriting is easy, then you're doing something wrong." This book is for the lover of action verbs and simple words. You're taught to think and to see the beauty of simple writing. And if you want to be GOOD, you must learn to TELL a story. After you read this book, the news will likely not sound the same.

Customer Reviews:
High price, good information but not worth it!.......2007-03-08
This was not worth the cost!!! It should be in hard cover for the price. Outrageous! One of the first times I felt like sending a book back.
Writing for Television, Radio, and New Media.......2000-06-20
This is the seventh edition of this book which, although apparently written as a text for use in college courses, actually serves very well for those of us who are interested in writing for special audiences, i.e., electronic media and video productions, etc. It's completely up to date and even a little ahead of itself, which is no mean feat in this age of rapid technology. I'm impressed with the way the writing principles and techniques are put across, but mostly with all the examples of what this kind of script should actually look like, on paper. Included are chapters on interviews and talk shows, corporate and children's programs, plays, everything. The book is quite expensive, but when I think about how much it will be referred to and constantly skimmed for new information, I can certainly justify the price. I am a creative writing teacher sometimes and a freelance writer all the time. As the author of The Complete Guide to Writers Groups, Conferences and Workshops (Wiley), I write the subsequent spin-off Ask Eileen column for iUniverse and America Online's Writers Club. I get tons of inquiries about how to write for the new interactive media and find this book a marvelous resource. It covers every aspect, leaves no stone unturned. I'm always referring to books on writers and writing and this one stands more than a cut above the rest. Oh, and one more thing,it's responsible. It doesn't pretend to be a quick-fix to making tons of money; it emphasizes professionalism in the best sense of the word. It's a fine investment, a fine, fine piece of work.

Great Companion for the Broadcast Journalist.......2002-03-21
Most journalists would be familiar with the Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law, better known as the "AP Stylebook". Well, this is the broadcast version.
The back half of this book will look very familiar to those of us who have seen the stylebook, but the front half is all new, giving good tips on how to write good broadcast stories. As a broadcast journalism student myself, I would especially recommend this for broadcast journalism students, it will REALLY help you out.

The Broadcast Journalism Handbook: A Television News Survival Guide
ASIN: 0742540278 |
Book Description
Writing for Broadcast News makes the storytelling elements that comprise a broadcast news story for radio or TV accessible to beginning broadcast writers. Its step-by-step approach shows how to structure a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end through a framework that ties together the anchor lead, reporter narrative, and actualities or sound bites. Emphasizing that people are interested in people, this handbook highlights the human element and putting a face on the story. It gives practical advice to aspiring broadcast reporters and writers toward becoming effective storytellers.
Customer Reviews:
Mixed Bag.......2007-09-16
A strength of this book is the last chapter which discusses convergence and online journalism. Students need to be prepared for the reality of preparing copy for myriad delivery systems. Each medium has unique requrements for writers seeking to get their messages across. Some media forms are more visually oriented than others, for example.
The beginning of the book is another strong area as he discusses writing in conversational style and goes on to identify key terms in the industry. Chapter three on "people-izing" gets to the essence of what broadcast journalism is all about. If it isn't relevant to people there's no point.
While the book has a lot of valid things to say about the subject matter, the author has a blind spot. He's biased. This comes out in his examples. This illustrates how bias enters news when instructors and textbook writers are unaware of their own prejudices. I don't think it's intentional, but it's there nonetheless.

The Broadcast Journalism Handbook: A Television News Survival Guide
ASIN: 0231079737 |
Book Description
-- Choice
Writing News for Broadcast is the Strunk and White of broadcast newswriting books. Long considered the gold standard of broadcast journalism textbooks, this guide for the student and the professional has inspired generations of newscasters through its eloquent examples and emphasis on the writer's responsibility, commitment, and integrity. It is written in a conversational style reflecting years of professional and teaching experience in radio and television newswriting.
This new edition is fully revised with examples throughout, drawn from fine writing by journalists at networks and local stations. It includes updated chapters covering use of the wire services and special formats that have become popular in recent years such as the newsmagazine. But the third edition retains the inspirational quality that has for years made this text so widely respected. In this process of providing clear, succinct instruction in the basics of the trade, it conveys to students and practicing newswriters a sense of the extraordinary tradition within which they work. The authors' emphasis on skill and creativity, responsibility to the listener, and appreciation of the profession's finest hours and finest writers make this book unique.
Customer Reviews:
Broadcast Newswriting Made Simple.......2007-08-28
Ed Bliss wrote for Ed Murrow and for Walter Cronkite - both of them broadcast news legends.
Later, he served as dean of American University's School of Communications.
Bliss has written a short, simple book that explains the basics of broadcast newswriting. He uses as examples stories written by well-known broadcasters. He covers common mistakes and how to avoid them.
This is a fine book for beginners, and a useful reminder for experienced pros.
The Gold Standard For Broadcast Newswriting.......2004-01-05
Although there are many fine books on the craft of broadcast newswriting (the works of Mervin Block come to mind) there are none that surpass this book. Whether you are a beginning student or a long-time veteran of the field, this book has something to offer you. Bliss and Hoyt teach you the basics and the fine points of the craft, but they give you something more, namely an understanding of the significance of this work and why aspiring to the highest standards of professionalism is important. Their wise guidance is supplemented by numerous examples of outstanding work. Bliss worked with Murrow and Cronkite, just to drop a couple of names. This is your chance to learn from the best.--William C. Hall
