Clever title for a book revue (pun intended), convincing you to buy it..........2007-09-03
Just finished this book a few days ago, read at a leisurely yet studious pace. Wow! There are so many insightful observations presented in an anecdotal and conversational nature, as opposed to a thesis type structure. This will help me immensely as I segue career-wise into the animation field. Great illustrations throughout too. The author is that rare combination, a gentleman and a scholar. Your Career In Animation will cause you to have many imaginary lightbulbs (ideas) floating over your head in rapid succession. My only complaint is that this book does not come with a highlighter marker. All kidding aside...a great read. Highly reccomended!!!
A guide like this has been long overdue........2007-08-14
Don't let the simplicity of the title fool you. For once it is just what it says. Not only written by an animation insider but a very knowledgeable one. I am an Art School Student, and while animation isn't my major, it is my goal and this book helps in getting one's head screwed on the right way so that regardless of major, you can have some goals in art school and beyond.
I love that he pulls no punches as to how difficult careers in animation and commercial art can be, but there are also strategies to make it all happen.
I picked it up by accident, but had to get it after flipping through it.
Definitely get it. There is no fluff here.
Your Career in Animation: How to Survive and Thrive.......2007-04-04
interesting and informational, I love it
A preview of your career..........2007-03-02
This book seems to be a good preview of many events that will come to pass during your education and career as an animator. To go to school or not? Check. Finding a job? Check. Keeping your job? Check again. The book covers all these topics and more, providing an overview of the animation industry and how it works, chock full of advice, insight, and common sense. Being only a student, I haven't yet put this book fully to the test, but it's gotten me much more informed, and information is power. I would recommend this book to anyone hoping to be, or already in the animation industry.
Things I Wish I Knew 10 Years Ago.......2007-01-10
Yup, it's all here. Having worked in the Animation industry, I highly recommend this book to anyone considering a career in Animation, or those who want to get more out of their existing Animation career. David Levy's book gives you insight that normally takes years to learn.

Helps explain all those exotic filmworld terms like best boy, gaffer, and grip.......2005-07-20
This book was fun to read. Written in an upbeat fashion primarily for young people contemplating working in the movie industry in production-related jobs, the book describes these jobs in a direct and breezy way, taking care to define the terms I noted in the title of this review (and many others). So the book also can be interesting to anyone who has a general interest in movies, movie making, and the movie business.
I was especially impressed about the job descriptions in the "special effects" area because the techniques themselves are also described, adding to my knowledge of them.
Quick!!.......2004-11-26
This book was started and finished in one day. A very easy read full of good information on a lot of film career types. I was disappointed in the book, however, because I was hoping (as per the review) for a basic pay scale on each job, but only a couple even mentioned it. It was slightly upsetting, but was an okay worth while read.
Great for anyone interested in movies.......2004-02-21
When you're looking for a way into what you know will be a competitive career, it's good to know there's so many options available. With this book, I was able to line up my background to find the right point of entry. Additionally, it really helped with learning all the jargon of the film industry. It gives you a real insiders feel. The writing breezes along with humor, insight and lots of practical advice. I'm always buying copies for my friends and I go back to it often just to refresh.
The Most helpful book I have ever read.......2001-01-16
This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn about all the jobs that are found on a film set. It gave me more options and helped me find what job is right for me. It helped me realize that you can start small and end big, and I recomend it to everyone.
An awesome reference and fun to read........1999-10-29
When I first read the book, I was in my last year of college and didn't know which directions to head towards the career I wanted in film. I found many books, but this one definitely stood out form the others. It gave me a list of every career opportunity in the film business and how to get started. I am now working my way up the ladder to a successful career. I highly recommend this to every one that expects to achieve their goals in film.

A Terrific Resource in this Field!.......2003-12-18

Book Description
A life in the movies has been an American dream for a century. Many people dream of becoming Hollywood professionals, but either aim too high (by trying to produce their own feature film) or too low (by hanging around restaurants frequented by movie stars) and end up frustrated. Wouldn't it be great if someone who knew what to do, someone who had achieved acclaim in the field, would walk us through the steps to success? At last, here is a book by a seasoned movie and television professional, Emmy winner Sandra Gordon, that is filled with practical, yet highly effective ways to build a career in entertainment. Gordon calls upon her own experience working on the television series PARTY OF FIVE, the movie RUDY and many more. There are many books that teach job-seekers how to write resumes or ace interviews, but not many books like ACTION! Uniquely designed for individuals who are interested in a career in the entertainment industry, whether they are recent college graduates or middle-aged career changers, ACTION! takes the formula out of the job-hunting book to the next step, telling its readers not only how to write their resumes, but where to send them, how to keep their jobs once they are hired, and how to advance in their career.
Customer Reviews:
WHERE was this book when i graduated college 4 years ago!.......2006-12-14
This book is an excellent over-view of the television & film world. If you've got your production goals set higher than local broadcast news, than I HIGHLY recommend this book. There's a great section on putting together your production resume, great real-world advice from Sandra & her production colleagues, detailed descriptions of what every position on a Film & TV set does, valuable info on how to work in various markets (Chicago, New York, LA, etc). I bought the book a few months ago and had the fortunate chance of meeting the author, and she is genuinely a wonderful woman who truly wants to help those interested in getting into & succeeding in "the business".
This book is also an easy & quick read, I read most of the book on a flight out to LA from Chicago. "Action! Establishing your Career..." is an ESSENTIAL read if you plan on moving out to LA and you don't have many production contacts there...I'm looking at you recent college grads! I've even recommended this book to friends who are actors on their way out to the coasts so they are educated about sets, crews, etiquette, etc.
"Action!" is a much easier & faster read than "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide" (which is itself a great book, but more of a legal resource, basically saves you from asking your entertainment lawyer dumb questions).
I'm not a newbie to production and this isn't a fake review, I'm a freelance Commercial Producer who is also very active in Chicago independent film; having served as producer on 4 features in the past two years, negotiated distribution deals for features, and I remain active in the scene via a Chicago based non-profit indie-sponsorship company. I find that I continue to pull "Action! Establishing your Career" off my bookshelf to use as a reference on projects.
A handy and practical guide.......2003-01-06
Action!: Establishing Your Career In Film & Television Production by Emmy award winning Sandra R. Gordon is a handy and practical guide specifically written for people who are interested in a career in one or more segments of the entertainment industry. From internship tips, to the ins and outs of the production department, to crafting a production resume, to the value of adopting a solid work ethic, Action! is a first-rate and highly readable resource intended and enthusiastically recommended for job seekers of all backgrounds seeking a position with film and/or television production careers.

Book Description
Director of some of the most controversial films of the twentieth century, Stanley Kubrick created a reputation as a Hollywood outsider as well as a cinematic genius. His diverse yet relatively small oeuvre—he directed only thirteen films during a career that spanned more than four decades—covers a broad range of the themes that shaped his century and continues to shape the twenty-first: war and crime, gender relations and class conflict, racism, and the fate of individual agency in a world of increasing social surveillance and control.
In Depth of Field, leading screenwriters and scholars analyze Kubrick's films from a variety of perspectives. They examine such groundbreaking classics as Dr. Strangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey and later films whose critical reputations are still in flux. Depth of Field ends with three viewpoints on Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut, placing it in the contexts of film history, the history and theory of psychoanalysis, and the sociology of sex and power. Probing Kubrick's whole body of work, Depth of Field is the first truly multidisciplinary study of one of the most innovative and controversial filmmakers of the twentieth century.

Irish Film: The Emergence of a Contemporary Cinema

Book Description
John B. Keane's popular play The Field (1965), based on a boundary dispute and murder in County Kerry, inspired the 1990 film scripted and directed by Jim Sheridan. Both works address the impact of dislocating social change on agricultural communities while insisting on darker power struggles within traditional life. To Keane's acute portrayal of the mid-century dismantling of rural society, Sheridan adds not only his characteristic attention to the varieties of social injustice spawned by modernization, but also liberal allusions to Irish myth, literature, and cinema. Drawing on fresh interviews, archival research, and new directions in the philosophy of film studies, Cheryl Herr grounds this reading of The Field in the conflict between embodied communal practices and the eternal threat of the outsider.
