YOU CAN BANK ON YOUR VOICE: Your Guide to a Successful Career in Voice-Overs
ASIN: 0823077020 |
Book Description
Aimed at seasoned actors as well as vocal talents who lack show-biz experience, this career manual offers the most complete guide to a lucrative field.
Voices are increasingly in demand for commercials, cartoon characters, announcements, and other voice-over spots. This outstanding handbook explains how to launch a career and find work. Along with sample commercials and script copy, the author gives advice on vocal exercises, on self-promotion, and on business matters, and this expanded edition includes new tips on making a demo CD; vocal modulation and breath techniques; advanced copy-reading techniques; and a section on how copywriters see the job of the voice artists they write for.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-read.......2007-10-04
I'm at the beginning of my career in voice-over and I've read a good handful of books on the topic and taken tons of classes...but rarely has anyone "broken down" the essentials of technique quite as clearly and succinctly as Elaine Clark does in this book. For the first time, I felt like I had some practical tools I could refer to when approaching copy, which not only gave me a promising ground to start from, but also helped build my confidence and desire to "stick-to-it." Rather than give you hollow, abstract phrases about the need to connect emotionally to the copy, she shows you "how" to make it "yours." Obviously she's a great teacher with a lot of experience, as she leaves no stone unturned in this book with regards to what to expect in every aspect of this career and how to be best prepared so that you can succeed.
My Favorite Book on Voiceover.......2007-08-16
Elaine Clark is my guru. I have read this book a number of times since purchasing it in 2001, and I return to a number of specific passages when I need a refresher. Having worked steadily in this business for 20+ years, and having purchased many books on voice acting, I 've found "There's Money Where Your Mouth Is" to be my absolute favorite. The reader is taken from the basics to the multitude of details involved in running your own successful voice-over business.
Thanks to Elaine Clark, I have grown professionally as a voice actor, and enhanced my voice acting and copy interpretation skills.
get this book.......2006-04-21
If you are at all interested in VO, get this book. I read it cover to cover a year ago, and I've been cherry picking those areas that I've needed to focus on ever since. Now that I've marked up my copy at least three times and pages are starting to break loose of their binding, I'm ready to get an agent and start working. If your an actor or improvisor this book will help all areas of your artistic endeavors. The nuances & subtleties of speech are examined in great detail. The bottom line throughout this book is how to stop "acting" and be real. The market is hungry for every day real people. There's a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow, pick it up.
Very helpful.......2005-10-24
This book is very helpful for those new to the industry. It contains information about putting your demo together, about getting an agent, and has sample copy to practice with, and tips for exercising your voice. I definitely reccomend this for anyone who is interested in trying this line of work for the first time.
Great book........2005-09-28
This book can be helpful for actors starting out. I have found that the actors I work with in my private practice need exercises to get them prepared for the biz.

Customer Reviews:
A MUST Read if You Want to Become a Broadcast Journalist.......2001-01-20
I, just like most broadcast journalists, went into the field to expose injustice and make a difference for those who did not have a voice.
What I didnýt know, until I read this groundbreaking book is how TV ratings, the money brought in by advertising dollars as a result of those ratings, and how sensational stories played a much larger role in what stories are aired to the unknowing public.
I was disheartened, as many journalists are today. This book also exposed how unstable broadcast journalism is in terms of a secure job. Linder explains how a network can simply buy out your contract, and replace you. Thatýs why you will see a face on the 6:00 news and three months later theyýre not in your viewing area. They had to find a new position, in a smaller, or sometimes if they are fortunate, a larger market.
This book is crucial to learn about the true ins and outs of this business. What many do not realize, is that News is a BUSINESS.
If you have a voice, and want your opinion heard, become an author, or a commentator, because a journalist cannot get involved in the story. Thatýs the number one rule in ethical journalism. The job is to report both sides of the story, period.
Additionally, this insightful book teaches you exactly what you need to do to get a broadcasting job to begin with. Ken Linder did such an outstanding job explaining the true gist of the business, that I became an author instead. I am deeply grateful to him for writing this book. It is packed with information that is difficult to find at best. Thank you Ken, your book deserves 10 stars!
Barbara Rose, Ph.D. author of Stop Being the String Along: A Relationship Guide to Being THE ONE and If God Was Like Man
Editor, inspire! magazine
Great insight into the tv news biz.......1999-07-24
This book presents insights into the world of how tv stations make decisions on news coverage, talent, how bad those decisions can be, and sheds light on how few stations there are that actually do a good job of it.
It is also interesting to find out how many unhappy tv journalists there are out there.
He offers solutions as to how to make your tv career more fulfilling, and that was valuable. I would recommend it for people in the tv industry, but for the average person who doesn't know the ins and outs of tv, it's not very useful.
THE MASTER OF EXPLAINING WHAT THE BROADCAST WORLD IS ABOUT........1999-06-15
There's The Master of the Universe, The Master of the Dance, The Master Class, and I'm not comparing Ken Lindner and his book to either - but, if broadcasting is your arena, and you're looking for a master agent/consultant/expert - no book and agent could be any more the master.

Customer Reviews:
Single-best book about TV writing.......2004-07-02
I collect books about TV writing, from way back in the '50s (Paddy Chayefsky, et al.) through today, and Masello's is the funniest, most informative, most well-written, most encouraging and most useful of them all. I hope he continues to revise and update A FRIEND IN THE BUSINESS as the years pass, in order to keep it current, because it really is an invaluable reference.
A pleasant read, but something was slightly "off".......2002-09-24
I enjoyed reading this book, and found it interesting to hear the trench stories of one man's journey into Hollywood. However, there is something about the book that I didn't like, and I can't quite pinpoint it....there is a feel that the author was not as successful in Hollywood as he wanted to be, and decided to at least leverage his limited experiences by writing a book about them (versus some books out there that seem to be driven by a true desire to impart hard-earned wisdom), while settling some scores in the process. Kind of like, "I'll show them...." (more subtle, but still there).
I'll give one example, and perhaps it's not the best one. He mentions that he was always hip-pocketed by the agencies, not signed, and tells us that info as if that is a good thing, like phew, he beat the system. OK, yes, being hip-pocketed is better than nothing at all, especially at the beginning, but let's face it, if an agent never wants to sign you, you did not pull one over on them. It just felt like he was trying to justify a lot of this kind of stuff. There are so many books out there that after reading, I am dying to have lunch with the author to meet him in person....whereas here, I found myself not having that experience at all.
But, the book was funny and had some good intro-to-the-business info.
a great combination of job facts and street smarts.......2001-11-11
This is both a fun book, and also a very infomative book, about the screenwriting business. It is full of academic truths about screenwriting, and it also contains alot of street smart realities that the writer (and author) learned over time. It has alot of good stories about the authors trials and tribulations, and shows how he approached the business, and then made alot of necessary corrections. I would give it a 4.5 without any hesitation. Very fun and informative.
TV is a Byzantine and Paramoid Business..........2001-09-10
..and this book creates a brilliant, candid portrait of this madness. "Friend in the Business" was recommended to me by someone when I told them I was thinking about breaking into TV, and this book has told me everything I need to know to hold onto both my sanity and my soul while doing so.
Great Read.......2001-02-14
I work in a college career services office & bought this book for our resource center. It arrived last week and has not yet made it onto the shelf--because I can't put it down! Many career books are dry "how to" manuals which may have valuable information, but lose the readers' interest before it can be imparted. Not this book. Mr. Masello's engaging, witty writing keeps the reader riveted. And while being entertained, you also learn a good deal about succeeding in TV writing. (Which, granted, appears to be much like its cousins in radio/movies etc...somewhat dependent upon luck, timing and perseverence).
At any rate, if you are contemplating a career in TV writing or looking for a good book to add to your career library, this is a must have. Note: I see he has another coming out in April on getting books published...I plan to order it as well!
