Book Description
In this "energetic" (Kirkus Reviews) re-creation of Anne Boleyn's tragic life -- and death -- Robin Maxwell offers a pitch-perfect version of a bawdy and exuberant time filled with lust, betrayal, love, and murder.
When the young Queen Elizabeth I is entrusted with Anne Boleyn's secret diary, she discovers a great deal about the much-maligned mother she never knew. And on learning the truth about her lascivious and despotic father, Henry VIII, she vows never to relinquish control to any man. But this avowal doesn't prevent Elizabeth from pursuing a torrid love affair with her horsemaster, Robin Dudley -- described with near-shocking candor -- as too are Anne's graphic trysts with a very persistent and lustful Henry. Blending a historian's attention to accuracy with a novelist's artful rendering, Maxwell weaves compelling descriptions of court life and devastating portraits of actual people into her naughty, page-turning tale. The result is a masterpiece of historical fiction -- so prophetic of our time that one would think it were ripped from today's headlines.
Customer Reviews:
It's ok. Not bad, not great. .......2007-05-19
I thought this book as very slow in parts. The approach of a "diary" I thought was not all that great. Time jumped sometimes 6 months to a year between "entries". I understand that it would be even less interesting if the author had put more in there but sometimes I felt that if I didn't already know the story of Henry VIII/Anne Boleyn/Queen Elizabeth I would be lost. What was interesting to me was the idea that Anne Boleyn was not a manipulating person, that instead she was just strolling along and all of a sudden the King wanted her, without her doing anything. I think it's unlikely true but it was an intersting take on the situation.
If you love the era, it's something to fill time, but I would not rush out to read it. It's ok. Not bad, not great.
GREAT.......2007-01-05
This book was received in good condition and very timely. For anyone who likes history this is a wonderful book to read.
The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn.......2006-11-04
good book, has the feel of an actual historical, non-fiction book. Recommend it for anyone interested in Henry the 8th history, just for a fun diversion.
The characters in this book are how we can only hope the people were in real life.......2006-06-06
The thing that I will always love about this novel, which is the story of when the new Queen Elizabeth I is given her mothers diary which covers her meeting with Henry VIII through her death, is the extremely sweet romance between Elizabeth and Robert Dudley. While Anne's diary entries are interesting and moving, it is the scenes of Elizabeth's childhood with Robert and their subsequent blossoming of love that is the best written part of this book. Truly, the part when Elizabeth is remembering them at about age 9 is so sweet it might make a person cry. I can only imagine and hope for both involved their real life love was as sweet and gentle (though probably it was more power hungry on both their parts.)
Anne's entries range on a scale from being quite boring (the coronation process, the six years she strung Henry along while he tried to get rid of Catherine) to being fascinating and emotional. The entries around Elizabeth's birth are by far the best. So many historical fiction writers portray Anne as being cold and unloving towards her daughter. While it is true that Anne probably was horrified and terrified when she bore a girl and not a boy, I think she probably loved her. Other entries are funny and smart, showing Anne as the real vibrant woman she must have been.
This book isn't perfect, it has its boring moments, and some chapters are just so slow you might Fall asleep during them. Parts of the book, such as Elizabeth's vow at the end, make no sense if you read the next book in this series, "The Queen's Bastard." But for the portrayal of Anne as a real person, with not just a conniving personality, and the wonderful sweet expression of love between Elizabeth and Robert (where most authors simply portray Robert as grasping for power) I can happily rate this book a solid four stars. Having read all but one of this authors books I can tell you her writing becomes less stiff, and she blossoms as a historical fiction author-with a generous dab, always, of romance.
If you want the back story on Elizabeth and Robert check out "Virgin: Prelude to the Throne" also by Robin Maxwell.
Unique approach on the Tudor Queens...........2006-04-09
This was a very good work of historical fiction. The book describes two lives: that of Elizabeth I and her mother Anne Boleyn. Anne's life is depicted through diary entries which Elizabeth reads long after her mother's death. Sometimes books that have two continuous, but disparate story lines become muddled.....however, the use of this device in this novel worked perfectly. Ms. Maxwell does a superb job of keeping the characters and their plots individual, weaving them together effortlessly, and creating an emotional, fascinating product.
I picked up this book because I recently became interested in this historical time period. My only regret is that I didn't know more facts about the era prior to reading the book. I think my comprehension would have been enhanced had I been more aware of the persons of interest that play smaller roles in the book.
Regardless, it is not a pre-requisite to be a history buff to enjoy this work. It is a fresh and unique perspective, well-written, and entertaining. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Maxwell!
Book Description
January 1
Todd told me earlier he had plans for the evening, and I thought he was going out with another girl. I never guessed the plans were with me!
We finally got to talk about "us," and we both said we wanted to be the kind of friends who were friends forever.
Then Todd stopped at this intersection. He pulled me out of the van, and when we stood in front of the headlights, I realized it was "our" intersection!
I was laughing and telling him this was crazy; and then he gave me this bracelet! It's so beautiful. I love it! It's a gold ID bracelet with the word "Forever" engraved on it. That's when he told me that no matter what happened in the future, we would be friends forever.
I'm smiling so big right now. I've never felt like this before in my whole life-.
A uniquely personal look at the hopes, prayers, and dreams of Christy Miller-

inspiring.......2003-05-20
I can't wait until her next book comes out...I've heard there's going to be another book...I hope there will be the 3rd book in the college series ended so soon...awww What happens when Todd opens his wedding present, huh? and what about Katie and Rick...She has to write another one, she just has too.
Not as Good.......2002-11-30
I didn't like this book as much. I own every Robin Jones Gunn book available and i was sadly disappointed with this book. I found it kind of boring. I read it really quickly and got very little out of it. I also didn't like that this thin little diary had 5 years of her life in it. It missed way too much. The only part i really liked was when she was talking about the meaning of her 'Forever' bracelet
COOLI BOOK!!!.......2002-06-05
This book is about Christy Miller, only deeper. It shows her life over five years in high school and in college. It gives a unique outlook on teen life with a Christian view. I couldn't put this book down! I would reccomend this book for all Chistians and people who are looking to be a Christian. This is a great way to start the Christy Miller series or to read along with it. JUST READ THIS BOOK! IT'S REALLY GOOD!
These are the best books!.......2001-10-25
Hello everyone. Robin Jones Gunn's books on Christy Miller are absolutely the best books I have ever read. When you read them, it's as if you've crawled inside the book and you're there with her everywhere she goes! Todd is such a great character, and he's the exact type I've dreamt of marrying ever since I got book 1. I cry when she cries. I laugh, and trust me, there's plenty to laugh at. I have a smile on my face during every book, and I definitely recommend every single on of them. These books are sweet and romantic, but realistic and give you a Biblical perspective on the way life should be. I have actually grown closer to God through these books. Especially the college series. Thanks, Robin! You're the best!
A READER FOR FLORIDA!.......2001-09-29
Hey ya'll...I think that these books are the most incredible books i have ever read. I have read all 12 of the Christy Miller Series and 1 and 2 of the College Series! I instantly Fell in Love with Todd, and I pray that the guy I marry will be just like him. He has the qualities every guy should have! I wish that my life was just like Christy's and I can't wait to read the 3rd book of the College Series! These Books have helped me in my life more ways than I can count! I love them and I can't wait to read them over! The things todd says to Christy are so sweet and caring, it makes you want to cry. I commend Robin Jones Gunn, she is an amazing writer. I like books that I can sit down in my room, and just get lost in a book. I couldn't put them down. I havne't been able to do that with a book in a long time! I encourage everyone to read these books, every one of them, and open their hearts to learn from them. God spoke to me in so many ways while i was reading the college books the most. I learned so much and my relationship with god was grown immensly. I look up to christy...and I try to be more like her each day!
Book Description
A lovely keepsake book that makes the perfect shower gift! Letters For Tommorow provides a way for expectant moms and dads to document the most exciting nine months in their lives, while they wait for their baby to arrive. The authors, a licensed family therapist and a licensed clinical psychologist, know that this tinie can also be particularly stressful. Structured, guided journal writing could be very helpful for many people, but most just don't know how to begin or what in the world to write about. Letters For Tommorow offers suggested topics, such as "Today I found out I'm pregnant," "We hid a baby shower for you," "I've packed a bag for the hospital," and it will also include many blank pages for topics of the parents' choice. Siblings, grandparents, other relatives, and friends are also encouraged to record their thoughts and feelings in this unique and beautiful book, illustrated throughout in full color. Letters For Tommorow includes writing tips and suggestions for how to use the book, and each section (the book is divided into trimesters) has plenty of space to paste in photographs, ultrasound pictures, and other memorabilia.

A Place to Keep My Heart.......2007-03-15
I originally bought this book in a local store and loved filling it out - the prompts are great and thoughtful. It has many inspiring ideas and I love the sections for grandparents and other relatives. You can write by pregnancy progression, emotions, health or any way you please. Nothing is right or wrong. It has spaces for photos that are well-placed so as not to take over the book - its about your thoughts and feelings as you prepare to welcome baby. I miscarried my first, and immediately came here to order a new copy so that it would be ready when I conceived again. I agree with the other reviewers - get a copy for each pregnancy!
One for each pregnancy.......2007-01-07
I bought this book for our first pregnancy/child and was told by my cousin (who is the last of 4 children) that I had to be sure to do the same for every subsequent child so as not to neglect anyone! I purchased this for my second (current) pregnancy and am enjoying writing in it again. It has some questions that might be better for a first pregnancy, but overall is a great journal. There are definitely pages/topics that I leave blank because they do not apply, but it doesn't detract from the rest of the journal. There is also plenty of space for adding your own topics. I enjoy reading the journal from my first pregnancy and look forward to sharing stories from both with my children when they are older.
Hard to replace.......2006-09-04
I used this journal with my first pregnancy nearly 5 years ago. Great starters and lots of room for a variety of pictures and entries from other people, family and friends. The illustrations were hilarious and made me feel like I was always a little smaller than the cartoon figure, which was important to my self-esteem. I wish they had a version of a sibling journal. I'm having a tough time finding a second book with the same warm fuzzy non-judgemental topics and illustrations.
Great Journal!.......2006-03-30
I looked at each book in the pregnancy book isle at Barnes and Nobles for the perfect journal. I found that many journals had facts about the different weeks, months or trimesters of the pregnancy but as excited as I've been, I've already bought and read up on what happens on a weekly basis. All the info and facts would be too repetitive. Also, the spaces were so little, I wouldn't be able to write everything I wanted. I was looking for a journal where I can write paragraphs at a time. Something that was organized towards the pregnancy but at the same time gave me room to plan the entries the way I wanted. I almost stopped looking when I saw this one. It was perfect!!
The format of the entries are letters to the baby from myself, my husband, and anyone else that is involved in our lives. The sections toward the front had topics but there was a larger back section for my own topics. Also, I loved reading the sample letters.
I love this journal. I will defintely get one as a gift for a girlfriend, a family member or for myself again for our 2nd baby.
Great way to remember all important events.......2005-02-02
When I found out I was pregnant with my first son I went out in search of a way to remember this event. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! I had plenty of books to read about how my body was changing but this gave me somewhre to put all of my feelings, good and bad.
My husband also liked writing in it because the topics gave him a place to start and help him write about his feelings.
I gave this to my bestfriend for her first son and she loved it. This journal is the best and now I am buying it agin for baby #2.

Years before he became a mythology expert and household name, Joseph Campbell journeyed to India. He was nearly 50, at a career crossroads, and after 10 years studying Indian art and philosophy he was finally going to India seeking the transcendent (Brahman), the mysteries of India. Instead he found the stark realities of baksheesh culture. His journal of those six months is the closest Campbell ever came to an autobiography. It's a diary of his adventures, insights, and ponderings; it's a window into the India of 1954 and the Joseph Campbell of 1954--both are intriguing places to visit.
Book Description
After ten years of intensive study of Indian art and philosophy, Joseph Campbell, at 50, finally embarked on a journey to India. Searching for the transcendent (Brahman), he found instead stark realities: growing nationalism, religious rivalry, poverty, and a prevalent culture of what he called “baksheesh,” or alms. This journal chronicles the disillusionment and revelation that would change the course of Campbell’s life and study, and his transition from professor to counterculture icon. Balancing Campbell’s astute explorations of mythology and history are his often amusing observations of a sometimes frustrating alien culture and his fellow Western travelers. This account also includes personal photographs, specially commissioned maps, and illustrations redrawn from Campbell’s own hand.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating.......2005-10-21
This book comprises Joseph Campbell's private journals during his first visit to India. Before Campbell set off for India, he had already established a worldwide reputation in the field of Indian mythology through translating the works of Heinrich Zimmer. In 1954, he was awarded a fellowship to travel and conduct research in India for future publications on Indian mythology. In this book, which was not written for publication, but intended to be solely Campbell's private record of his journey, Campbell is confronted with the realities of India for the first time, and he is shaken to the core by how different India is from what he had been led to expect.
Campbell's stay in India lasted approximately 6 months, during which time he traveled extensively throughout the country. He started off the journey in the company of Swami Nikhilananda and several female devotees. Together with this troop, Campbell visited various Ramakrishna Missions and temples. Before long, however, he began to lose interest in this party, as he observed that the Ramakrishna Missions seemed to play a much smaller role in Indian society than he had ever imagined. He began to travel independently, visiting temples and talking to people he met along the way (mainly intellectuals, who were able to discuss philosophy in English). He also struggled to book a dance tour for his wife, Jean Erdman, a well-known artist of modern dance.
For the first three months of his journey, Campbell is so affected by culture shock that he is practically incapacitated. Although he had traveled widely in Europe, from the descriptions in these journals, he had no experience traveling in the Third World. He had a most un-adventurous palate, so he ate European food where it was available, and then complained mightily about its quality. His attitudes towards hotels and service were inflexible, and he seemed to lack the sense of humor and ability to let things slide that are essential for dealing with a culture that is completely alien to one's own. He is strongly patriotic and greatly dismayed by Indian criticisms of his own country.
The extent of his ignorance concerning Indian art is illuminated by his reactions to Indian dance. At the first Indian dance recital he attended, he was outraged by the fact that only he and another Westerner found the performance at all interesting. But instead of trying to understand why the Indians in the audience were not impressed, he was simply outraged that they didn't react the way he did. At the next recital that he attended, he noted that the Indian members of the audience seemed to have a separate set of values for judging the performance than his own. As he became more familiar with the classical dance forms by attending a few lectures, he gradually began to develop an appreciation for the art. When his wife arrived and began her Western modern dance tour, he seemed to expect Indians to approach this foreign dance form in the same way that New Yorkers or Parisians might, forgetting or being entirely ignorant of the role of dance in Indian society and the different set of aesthetic values associated with dance.
Nonetheless, the notes presented here are fascinating because in them, we can see Campbell coming to terms with Indian culture. Whereas before this trip, he imagined India as drawn for him by Krishnamurti, Nikhilananda, and Zimmer, he finally begins to build his own understanding of the culture during this journey. This understanding is colored not only by his visits to temples and conversations with philosophers, but also by the mundane struggles to book his wife's dance tour.
Campbell in India.......2002-11-07
Before I read Baksheesh and Bramhan, all I knew of Campbell was that he was an author of formidable intellect and also engaging wit (if the print version of Moyers series is to be believed)with a deep understanding of Oriental faiths. Campbells' account of his encounter with the land of these faiths - India - is at once insightful of the man and India in the 1950s. Confronted by the actual India - ancient, prudish, theieving, an emerging nation seeking a semblance of pride, low on self esteem, spiritual - Campbell is all at once the fastidous Westerner at odds with a culture he has admired from afar, charmed by its exoticism and occasionally getting bang on and incisively the actual reality of India. This book is an easy read and essential for anyone who has ever admired Campbell's work. Also a must read for anyone who wants to hold up a mirror to the new Indian nation and how far and how less that nation has travelled in the 50 odd years since. Campbelll's acerbism on fellow American travellers make for marvelous diversions.
One small observation and this must stem from being an Indian - that India is a hospitable nation is clear from this book. I am sure a lot of Indians would attribute it to Campbell being white, but there is something in here of hearts and houses being thrown open to a stranger.

Great Love Story.......2007-05-23
I'm a big GH fan and have watched since I was a child with my babysitter. I was a teenager when Robin and Stone's story was playing out and I loved it so much I bought Robin's Diary to relive it whenever I wanted to. These days soaps are more about violence and shockers than love and it's great to take it out and remember how it used to be.
You don't need to watch General Hospital to read this book and it to make sense. It's a great tale of young love.
Not just for the General Hospital Fan.......2006-03-26
Although based on a storyline from the popular soap opera General Hospital, this is actually a Romeo and Juliet type story teens can relate to. I read this for the first time as a teenager and still love it as an adult. This story looks at how two people on the verge of adulthood have to learn to live when one is HIV + and how that affects everyone in this young man's life, most notably his girlfriend Robin. Robin's courage thoughout is an inspiration.
the best.......2004-01-06
This is my favorite book. The story covers a major crush, first love, a first time and a tragic death. I am the biggest fan of Robin and Stone around, and each time I read this book I still cry at the end. Robin and Stone will always be in my heart.
true love.......2003-05-20
This book has everything you love in a story: friendship, love, drama, vunerabilty, complexity. I could go on and on. This story was truely the best I have ever read. I watched Robin and Stone on t.v when I was younger, but now that I have the book I appriciate it even more. I cried and cried at the end. Love to Robin and Stone forever. Thank you for this wonderful story General Hospital.
I am a huge Robin and Stone fan........2000-10-08
i have read and enjoyed this book many many times. I am also a huge fan of both Stone and Robin. I just have one problem with it. (not the book) i can't seem to find anything on the actor who played Stone, and i am not able to find him real name either. If anyone can help me please let me know. My email is mrs_green_thumbs@yahoo.com.i will be looking forward to more books like these.
