5 out of 5 stars Stretch Your Body, Mind and Spirit.......2007-07-30

I picked up this book while wandering through the bookstore one day. I looked at the cover and my intuition told me that this book was going to dramatically change my life. I have been using the Meridian Flexibility System for 3 years now and every stretch is still an adventure. I would say this book is but a brief overview when you contrast it with the transformational possiblites it brings to your life. The personality aspects have given me another tool to understand how we "be" in this world and has brought a new level of compassion and understanding for myself and humanity. My only complaint is that Bob is not releasing the sequel fast enough! I have benefited athletically, physiologically and spiritually from this book. It does require you to expand your mind in ways you haven't before and to really get to know and feel your body at a deep level. This is different from a "core" concept because you bring emotionality to the experience-something those from the "physical" world might have a more challenging time tapping into. I work in the field of natural medicine and have used this system with my clients...for athletic rehab, sport training, psychological and physiological therapy. While the system can at first seem difficult to understand you can intuitively and with a little common sense see life altering results. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to do this per se. Many people don't know about meridians or muscle groups the beauty of this system is that you don't need to know. Just start resisting and watch the beautiful transformations that will occur to your whole being. So here's a tip for those that are scratching their heads about the pics, muscles, meridians etc...start with an area of your body that you know to be tight start moving in the direction that FEELS the tightest and RESIST-use your own body, someone elses or a door, floor or anything else that you can leverage to create resistance, have fun and be creative-the key is to RESIST during the entire motion whereever it is on your body that is tight. For all of you in the "mental/thinking" world-you will receive the benefits whether you UNDERSTAND all of it or none of it. Once you try this "free-form", where you don't rely on the book or diagrams but just get down on the floor and start resisting where you are tight you will then be able to go back to the book, if you want and the pieces of the puzzle will start to fit together because you will have already EXPERIENCED what he is talking about! Most of the MF trainers will do inexpensive workshops for small/large groups some will even travel to your area. Bob does an amazing job of tying together lots of persoanl experiences, systems and methods for personal growth and transformation in a short book. It's a STARTING point for something that is largely experiential and unique to each person and that is the beauty of what he is trying to convey. Much of the book's concepts are ideas that we have been trying to implement and understand universally for a lifetime. I think Bob has made huge strides in tying it all together into a comprehensive system. I can only hope that he will continue to document and release his findings so that we can all share in the many possibilites of our own multifaceted transformation. If you are looking for a technical manual on anatomy and muscle groups and want to stick with traditional fitness only concepts this book doesn't fit in that box. If you want to explore more possibilities for powerfully STRETCHING yourself physically, emotionally and spiritually than this is the book for you!!!
Much love and respect to Bob and the whole Meridian Flexibility Family.

1 out of 5 stars Rehashed hype.......2007-07-26

There is no "genius" to this system except getting an endorsement from an Olympic swimmer.
The author contends that he healed himself through stretching. In the process, he also seems
to have found the answer to Life. Just do his program and you will become enlightened in the
process. As a former gymnast and professional dancer who has experienced many systems of stretching and bodywork, I find the book terribly tedious and difficult to follow.
Mr. Cooley does not name the muscles of the body and shows no diagrams for people to
follow. Almost all his stretches come from yoga. A lot of them need partner assistance. That stretching assists meridian flow is obvious to anyone who has studied yoga and hardly a new concept. The book seems geared to selling his rather expensive sessions and getting people to
sign up for his workshops. When I checked his website I found his associates do not seem to
have formal training or degrees other than what Mr. Cooley himself offers. His training seems
to be limited to his own healing which we are to take on faith. If you really want to learn about flexibility check out Pavel Tsatsouline's work. He's funny, down to earth,no-nonsense and has solid credentials. Other great books: Kit Laughlin's Stretching and Flexibility and Sang Kim'sUltimate Flexibility. These are people with solid backgrounds and their books show clear and concise ways of stretching without any snake oil promises of metaphysical rapture. And you don't have to go organic either.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2007-07-19

I read the book and found nothing new in this book that you wouldn't find in the book Accu-Yoga by Michael Reed Gach which came out in the late 70's or early 80's. Accu-Yoga broke down the effects of Yoga on the physical body and the meridians which are expounded in the TCM system. A lot of the exercises in Mr. Cooley's book are straight from Hatha yoga, although from what I understand the way Hatha yoga is taught today is much more physical, and outward than in the time I came to yoga. Most yoga asanas[poses, postures], naturally have the stretch and resistance aspect built in to them, if you practice them in an concious way. Paying attention to the breath and the inner movement of the body, is the way that I thought yoga was suppose to be. Nothing New!

4 out of 5 stars Stretching Breakthrough!.......2007-06-28

Bob Cooley's, The Genius of Flexibility: The Smart Way to Stretch and Strengthen Your Body, has been a "breakthrough" manual for myself and my patient/clients. As a doctor of chiropractic, I have integrated neuromuscular therapy techniques with chiropractic adjustments for over 30 years. The past 5 years I have added yoga to my own fitness routine and encouraged others to take it up in their's. Stretching has always been in the mix as well, yet I never could "see" how to get past or through the stretch reflex of contraction we all seem to arrive at. Bob Cooley's "aha" during his own journey to health, spoke to me immediately. As I put his technique of "The Principle of Resistance",(contracting the muscle you are lengthening while stretching it) to work, the "aha" happened in me as well! His basic 16 stretches are as far as I've been able to comfortably go during this 1st month, however I look forward to the greater flexibility I know I am moving into. Yes, he does go in a multitude of directions in his book, yet I've never encountered anyone who has experienced life altering experiences not to rebound in ever expanding directions during and following their recovery.
So, for anyone who has a basic knowledge of their body and is led to the concepts of stretching, this is a must read! By the way, page 255 will help one focus on muscles and any specific areas of injury.

5 out of 5 stars this book was the key to recovering from knee injuries/pain.......2007-06-01

This book introduces stretches and strengthening exercises unlike any other I've come across. It is easy to follow, a delight to read and apply. Filled with anecdotes, pictures and a lifetime of research this is a gem for anyone in any shape/size body! It has been the key to heal my knees (from mulitiple injuries), and has helped me recover without needing surgery. The book is practical, eye opening and useful. Truly genius!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best for new readers.......2007-09-22

These books are my first choice for new readers. They don't have dynamic pictures so the children stay focused on the words and they keep to simple sounds and short vowels.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for Beginning Readers!.......2007-09-16

The entire series is wonderful! It was awesome to see my 5 year old boy read the entire first book all by himself! So far, it has also come up along side the reading program we're currently using, Teach Your Child to Read In 100 Easy Lessons, by Siegfried Engelmann, Phyllis Haddox, and Elaine Bruner. These really are a must have for homeschoolers, and even children who are having a difficult time learning to read in public schools. My mother-in-law is currently using them with my 12 year old sister-in-law who has down syndrome. The books rely heavily on phonics, and are in small bite-size pieces, so young children aren't overwhelmed. It reinforces word families and uses word rhyming to create familiarity with those word families.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful beginning readers!.......2007-09-06

What a fantastic set! My child loves the books. They are so cute and the progression logical. Highly recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars Builds confidence and encourages independence.......2007-08-31

I bought these a few weeks for my daughter who turns 3 tomorrow. She is already reading the first book entirely by herself. Initially I was disappointed. I thought the books were small and flimsy, until I gave them to her. It turns out they're just the right size for her little hands and the paperback style allows me to fold the book so she only sees the page she's reading. Better yet, they're easy to take places. These books haven't left her side, in the car, to the grocery store and even to bed. She's so proud of herself when she spells out a word and then tries to sound it out. The repative nature of the books allows her to sound out a word on the first page and then recognize it on all the following pages, buiding confidence and sight recognition. Each box contains 12 books with graduating difficulty. It will take a while to master all the books in this box so at the price, its an incredible value.

5 out of 5 stars Slow, easy progression .......2007-08-18

My son is 3 1/2 and just finished the first set of Bob Books and can't wait for more. This series is perfect for him because they stay at a beginner level for so long (silent "e" is finally introduced in the 5th set). I love that the set uses some words that might not be familiar to small children ("keg", "nip") as well as names of characters to encourage reading instead of guessing. As you would expect, there are some awkward sentences, but my son doesn't seem overly bothered by them. And the pictures aren't perfect, but they're cute enough that I can't keep my 18-month-old away from them. I'm very pleased that we chose this series.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good continuation of series 1 and 2.......2007-06-08

If you have already tried the Bob's books 1 & 2 you already know that this is an excellent starter series for begining readers who know a series of sight words that they have been taught. These sight words are used in amusing but uncomplicated sentences that give a new reader a sense of accomplishment.

5 out of 5 stars great books to learn by!.......2007-05-09

A great set of beginning books- allows the child to learn the basics of reading with repetitive sounds and words- pictures to help with the association of the words.
Great for the Pre-K and K student~!

5 out of 5 stars Bobs Books encourage confidence and pride.......2007-05-02

Our 5-yr-old LOVES reading these books all on his own and showing off his skills. Definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for beginning readers.......2007-04-05

I looked everywhere for some books that my 5 year old could read as a beginning reader and nothing worked until we found the Bob Books. He loves them. Dr. Seuss was too hard and so was Sandra Boynton. He wanted to feel successful and I wanted him to practice reading. The Bob Books helped in all of these areas. They are fun books too!

5 out of 5 stars The greatness continues..........2007-03-15

We are so pleased with these books. My son started with set one and could read tentatively through that set. By the time we got to set two, his confidence increased so much that he zoomed right through this set with hardly any problems. We love the consistent sound patterns and consistent level of difficulty. And we both really get a kick out of the simple picutures that go along with the stories!

4 out of 5 stars very good, i recommend it.......2007-03-20

i consider it a good idea for studing to OCA exam test. Even if you have not experience with Oracle databae, it is recommended for beginers.

i recommend to read it more than one time, because there are so much details to know at the exam... practice a lot

the book cover all the topics presented by the Exam

4 out of 5 stars almost complete for oca+ocp .......2007-02-06

i have got my oca last year and my ocp just last month, utilizing these two books and the ocp 10g all-in-one exam guide from john & damir. these two books have a quite complete coverage of the materials in oca and ocp 10g exams, which means it sometimes covers more than needed to pass the exam. in one way it is good for our knowledge, but it sometimes could be frustating because of the long chapters (need two books to pass ocp instead of one book with john/damir book). i would suggest however to still get the john/damir book in addition to this one to pass the oca/ocp exam (like i did), for the sake of completeness and chapter organizations. these two books have rather unique chapter structures (not aligned with oracle admin I and admin II training materials), for instance there are three chapters in the admin II training that combined into one chapter of the second book. overall it is still a good reference not just for 10g oca/ocp exam, but also for your oracle 10g knowledge in general.

5 out of 5 stars 10g certification.......2007-01-10

Well written, clear and easy to read.
Sample tests are accurate and helpful in preparing for the real thing.

When Bob Anderson first published Stretching in 1980, the fitness movement was new to most Americans. The term aerobics had just been coined in 1968, and few people outside bodybuilding circles had heard of Arnold Schwarzenegger yet.

Now, fitness is such old hat that it's even had a backlash or two. Lots of the original ideas have been called into question, including the preeminence of aerobic exercise. But flexibility is bigger than ever; Pilates and yoga are two of the fastest-growing fitness programs in the U.S. in the early 2000s. The type of stretching Anderson recommends--called "static," meaning you sit in one place and hold the stretch for a specified amount of time--isn't exactly trendy, but it remains the most accessible way for entry-level exercisers to improve their flexibility. (Or, perhaps more important, to keep from losing whatever flexibility they have as they get older.)

Those who already have the version of the book that's been put out by Shelter Publications since 1980 won't find a whole lot that's new in this 20th-anniversary version. Some of the simple drawings by Anderson's wife, Jean, have been updated to show athletes in sport-specific outfits doing stretching routines, and there are more routines than before. The new edition includes routines for children, stretches to do in front of the TV, and some exercises to do before and after gardening. Plus, the old staples remain--stretching routines for all muscle groups, and pre- and postplay sequences for common sports (football, baseball, basketball) and a few uncommon ones (equestrian, motocross, rodeo). He's also created routines for sports that barely existed in 1980, such as snowboarding, triathloning, and inline skating.

The constant in Stretching is ease of use. Anderson doesn't need a lot of complex explanations because the drawings are so easy to follow. He makes it clear that stretching should make you feel better, not worse, and that it's not a competition. Any little bit you can do is better than not doing anything. That's a timeless message, which is why his book has been such an valuable reference for the past 20 years. --Lou Schuler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very flexible book........2007-09-29

I liked this book on stretching for several reasons. The first is its simplicity. The pictures and instructions are very straightforward, making it quite easy to do basic stretches. Stretches are given for just about every muscle and limb you'd ever want to stretch and the author has even included some suggested stretching routines for various sports. Whether you're a competetive athlete, business person or housewife, I feel that this is book will have something to offer everyone making it a very handy and "flexible" book. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for anyone looking for more specific rotator cuff and shoulder stretches.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas For Stretchin.......2007-09-26

I got more ideas for stretching from this book, than I thought possible. I am definitely feeling looser from it. Also, it recommended the theracane, which I also got. Cool stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Every family should own a copy.......2007-09-07

I was surprised that stretches are for everyone. The older you are and the poorer your health, the more important stretches are to you. There are also streches for particlular sports and for youngsters.

The stretches are pictured using easy to interpret cartoon drawings with simple descriptions.

Definitely not just for health-care professionals but for everone.

5 out of 5 stars Stretchinng.......2007-06-13

I have had 2 neck surguries and 2 lower back surguries and this book is a life saver, have tried others but none are as clear or simple to understand.

4 out of 5 stars I love this.......2007-06-10

Every time I have a sore muscle or want to stretch a specific area of my body, I look it up in this book and I find what I need nearly every time.

I don't have the revised edition, but I am sure it's mostly the same stuff. I'll probably end up getting it sooner or later. It's a wonderful book for anyone. I highly recommend it.

It's an excelent, faster, complete reference that helps you in your every-day Oracle DBA work, It cover from the basic topics to RAC and high-availability configuration in only 708 pages. Obvious, It's a handbook reference and doesn't give you the complete solution for one problem, but if You had been working for 2 or 3 years as DBA, or if You are and OCA or OCP DBA, the book is a great reference for you.

1 out of 5 stars Forget it - RTFM.......2007-03-13

This book unfortunately does nothing to expand the body of knowledge beyond putting on paper what you can just as easily find in the standard documentation. I'm sorry I put my money down for this when I have the docs just a click away as I type.

I have tried a few times to use this as a reference, but each time it takes me about 3 pages to hit a deadend because of some question or situation that the book fails to address. In each case I have had to figuring it out for myself from the standard documentation/google etc.

The authors consistently fail to deliver the two things I look for in technical books:
(1) provide the insights on "why is it so?" - the explanation, mental models, frameworks that help readers move from just learning syntax to a deeper level of understanding. I want to read and learn from authors who are sufficiently skilled in their field with the powers of introspection and communication, who have put the time and effort to deeply consider a subject before turning their learnings into a book.

(2) supplement the existing body of knowledge with new knowledge or at least a new organisation of knowledge that facilitates learning or understanding.

I have had the same reaction to other titles in the Osborne Oracle Press series; I thought I'd give this a go but now sorry I did. In future there is no place for these books in my shopping cart!

5 out of 5 stars Reference Book!.......2007-01-04

If you are looking to learn Oracle, don't try to do it with this book alone. This book is great for reference, but to try and understand all that is Oracle requires a different book.

1 out of 5 stars Merely regurgitates Oracle's documentation........2006-12-07

This book merely regurgitates the freely available documentation from Oracle. However, this book is even worse since its space limitations means that the author is forced to be even more cryptic than the already difficult to understand product documentation. I could not find anything useful in this book - the book doesn't explain anything. Nothing at all. Aren't books like these supposed to simplify concepts for nonexperts or beginners? Forget about this book. Download the free documentation and use the money to print that out at Kinko's instead.

5 out of 5 stars It is an excellent DBA Handbook.......2005-11-20

The book is excellent in the sense that it went straight to the essential and important topics. I am surprised that they did cover a lot of topic in a few pages. The book does help if you have some experience with oracle and especially with 10g. If you are new to oracle I am pretty sure you pick up the wrong book and you will be shaken by the concepts in the book. Overall I recommend this book if you are already familiar with 10g.

Book Description

“Something big is about to happen….”
–From the Foreword by Don Box, Architect, Microsoft Corporation

“If I were writing a Workflow book, this is what I would have written. The material is very well presented with code examples and explanations. Also, I love how the authors discuss the underlying architecture, enabling me to get a really deep understanding of the technology to efficiently design and build my own projects.”

–Jeffrey Richter (http://Wintellect.com)

“Explicit support for workflows in a lightweight framework is a major contribution. Many tough problems traditionally faced by application authors, such as state management in the presence of long-running activities (think weeks or months!), can be addressed systematically by adopting

a workflow approach. Dharma Shukla and Bob Schmidt present the workflow technology under and made accessible by the new workflow foundation in the .NET 3.0 framework, and they do so in an approachable and yet authoritative way that is truly enjoyable.”

–Clemens Szyperski, software architect, Microsoft Corporation

“The Windows Workflow technology combines declarative programming and state machines in a very rich and powerful way, one that is bound to have a profound influence on the way we program in the coming years. In the style of the classic Essential COM by Don Box, Dharma and Bob have done a great job making this technology accessible to any developer already versed in C#, VB, and the .NET Framework, and who wants to achieve declarative enlightenment. Don’t miss out.”

–Joe Duffy, program manager, Common Language Runtime (CLR) team, Microsoft Corporation

“I think WF should and will be used as the main application model for web service applications. Developers working on web services will want to learn about this technology from this book; it comes straight from the source and explains the technology well and in depth.”

–Krzysztof Cwalina, program manager, Microsoft Corporation

“This book provides an enlightening exploration of Windows Workflow Foundation for both the novice and the veteran alike.”

–Nate Talbert, software design engineer, Microsoft Corporation

Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is a groundbreaking approach to writing and executing programs. WF programs are assembled out of resumable program statements called activities, which provide encapsulation of both domainspecific logic and control flow patterns reflective of real-world processes.

In Essential Windows Workflow Foundation, two WF lead architects–Dharma Shukla and Bob Schmidt–offer an under-the-hood look at the technology, explaining the why and not just the how of WF’s key concepts and architecture. Serious WF developers seeking details about how to effectively utilize and extend the framework by writing activities will find cogent explanations and answers here. With simple and illustrative examples, the authors demonstrate exactly how to leverage WF’s extensible programming model to craft domain-specific programs. Drawing on their unique vantage point in designing and developing WF, Shukla and Schmidt deliver authoritative coverage of

Essential Windows Workflow Foundation is the definitive resource for developers seeking an in-depth understanding of this novel technology.

Dharma Shukla is an architect at Microsoft working on next-generation programming models. A founding member of the Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) team, Dharma played a key role in defining the architecture of WF. Bob Schmidt is a senior program manager at Microsoft working on next-generation programming models. Since 2003, his primary focus has been on the design of WF. Both authors have been involved with the WF project since its inception, and have been responsible for specifying, designing, and developing large portions of the technology.

2 out of 5 stars Spare me the vocabulary.......2007-09-24

Look, there are enough buzzwords that are ill-used in our "profession domain".

Passivate? Pedagogical? Episodic execution? Thread and process agility?

Enough. Enough. Enough.

When a book starts as oddly as this one did, the editors are using the wrong ruler to measure what valuable content should look like.

Essential (absolutely necessary; indispensable) information should not be "decorated" with such a mish-mash of terms stolen from other disciplines or made up for the sake of being unique.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best insider book.......2007-04-29

This is one of the best books I have read. It shows the real internal workings of WF and does so vividly. This is not a work-by-example book but a book everyone must own to learn the fundamentals. I didn't want to get spoiled by the Visual Designer in DevStudio simply because I wanted to know what's going on behind the curtain and this book definitely hit the spot. I would buy other books (probably Scott Allen's) for practical usages/learning by examples.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed the MOST ESSENTIAL book on WF.......2007-04-27

Just as Kernighan-Ritchie wrote the book about "C" which laid the foundation to that language, this book is the "starting point" to learn the new paradigm of Workflow Programming. This book examines the WF "concepts" in a manner that build in steps, one concept at a time.

Most books try to give "everything" in "how to implement applications" fashion. But unless one gets a "conceptual understanding" of what the technology is, and why it is like that, it would be hard to "think with" that technology. One can "copy" other examples for rapid implementations, but one cannot "invent" solutions that apply to their own domain.

By reading this book one can really "invent" solutions to "any" domain one works in. Very well written book. I suspect Don Box played an important role in guiding the style of this book. Other subjects should also have such "essential" books available.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to more than just use activities to build workflows..........2007-04-10

...then get this book. This is an excellent book by the creators of WF. I had been working on WF for a long time, not just by using activities, but building them. However, I never was really confident because while I understood the concepts of activitiy, designer, validator, persistence, I was unaware of many other concepts like what is the threading model (should I make my data structures used in my custom activities thread safe?), scheduler, xoml vs xaml, etc. I used to hit these concepts while designing activities and some runtime extensions and since I didn't completely know, I did not enjoy my work as much. Then this book is released. This book is exactly what I was looking for. Concisely written, but loaded in information. More importantly, it is comprehensive. As I read from chapter to chapter, all my fears about the concepts I only half-understood were replaced by the power of a holistic knowledge of WF I was gaining. There are other books out there which tell you what a CAG activity is and how to use it, but when you are done with that kind of stuff and you don't know where to look further, read this book. With zero exaggeration, I can say that after I read the book, my confidence increased so much that I look forward to work everyday more than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent discussion of WF architecture.......2007-03-23

This book is one of the best written technical books I've read in the last several years. It is not a book to teach WF programming so much as a discussion of the architectural foundations of WF. The greatest benefit I gained from this book was that, even when I can't use WF itself, I can use some of the patterns that make WF possible. If you're an architect looking to gain a clear understanding of what WF is, and from that, what it can do, there is no better book than this one.

Book Description

Tim LaHaye’s most exciting series ever, Babylon Rising, continues with this explosive new installment, including more revelations than ever before. In The Edge of Darkness, LaHaye reveals the meaning behind some of the most carefully guarded Biblical prophecies to expose a conspiracy with terrifying consequences for our modern world.

This time Michael Murphy sets off in search of the Lost Temple of Dagon and the dark secrets of the strange god once worshipped by the ancient Philistines. His quest will lead to a final confrontation with an old enemy and uncover one of the Bible’s most feared warnings–a prophecy of false miracles, false messiahs, and ultimate evil that will be fulfilled in our time...and that not even Murphy can stop once it’s begun.

Once again Tim LaHaye combines his unmatched insight into Biblical prophecy with his unique skills as a master storyteller to deliver a suspense thriller of nonstop action with a thought-provoking message for our troubled times.

5 out of 5 stars Tim LaHaye does it again.......2007-09-05

Tim LaHaye has a way with blending fiction into biblical prophecy. His stories are fast-paced, and hard to put down.
"The Edge of Darkness" tells of the fast approaching time of the anti-christ. This series is a must read for everybody.

5 out of 5 stars When will book 5 be out?.......2007-08-30

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book but as with the others it did not conclude. The way scripture is woven into the story line makes it interesting and I believe will lead to further investigation by those not familiar with the themes. A good thing.

1 out of 5 stars Unable to Review .......2007-08-28

I do not have a review as I did not receive the book. The order was cancelled by Amazon stating that they could not deliver the item to the address listed. This is strange as I have received other books at the same address. I was not very happy about it. I will now have to go and purchase it at the Barnes & Noble store.

2 out of 5 stars This series keeps getting more and more disappointing..........2007-06-13

I was a huge fan of the first book in the Babylon Rising series, but I feel that the subsequent novels--including and especially this one--have slowly but surely been going downhill. The Edge of Darkness and the third book, The Europa Conspiracy, have lacked the action of the first book, and even of the second book, The Secret on Ararat. This novel also consisted mainly of lackluster dialogue and ridiculously simple thoughts on the part of its characters, along with childish comparisons (such as toward the end of the book, when the Seven are comparing their actions to fountains etc. at the Chateau de Versailles) that served as a constant annoyance.

Also, Tim Lahaye kills off many important characters in this Babylon Rising installation. I won't name names because I don't want to spoil things for anyone who hasn't read this book yet, but I feel that it's a bit late for the authors to start introducing new MAIN characters into the series, which is what they will have to do now that all but a couple of its main characters are dead. The authors need to go back to the basics of what made the first Babylon Rising book, and even the second one, the hits that they were.

5 out of 5 stars "Edge of Darkness" keeps you on Edge of Seat.......2007-05-08

As with this whole series this an excellent book. I look forward to any more that this serious might produce.

Consonant blends, endings, and a few sight words advance reading skills and create more complex stories. Use of word families make longer stories more manageable. 5 out of 5 stars Bob Books are excellent!.......2007-08-13

Bob Books Set 1-Beginning ReadersI purchased sets 1 through 5 for my Kindergartener, and he loved them! It has helped to build his confidence in reading. The illustrations are simple. The sentences are simple. The stories provide adequate word recognition reinforcement, and then a slight challenge toward the end of the book. Once my son started with set 1, he could not put the books down. I would recommend these books to anyone for their children who are starting to read!

5 out of 5 stars Great for learning Word familes.......2007-05-18

I have been using the Bob books for one of my studens last 7 months. He loves them. For children who have challenge to learn reading, the Bob books are perfect. Their very simple stories are not intimidating, but give just right amount of new challenge to move up. In this set 3, there are two activities books to review and enforce comprehension of all previous stories through fun activities.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, layered, structured fun.......2007-05-13

great sets for home...my K-G son took these in small doses (2 to 3 times a week) and got thru the first three sets in a few months...when he starts on a new set he likes to go back to the old set and see how fast and mistake free he can read the older sets...looking forward to the 4th set...

5 out of 5 stars We love BOB books.......2007-04-10

BOB books are great. They're simple but they build on eachother and really strengthen the childs ability to read. I have a day care and when a child finishes one book, they get an .88 cent toy from Wal Mart or sometimes a sugar free popsicle. When they finish a whole set they get to pick a bigger toy. The big kids read a BOB book they've already mastered to the little kids before their nap. Then I read a big kids book to the big kids.

5 out of 5 stars Still Wonderful.......2007-03-09

Another wonderful set of Bob books. Nothing makes my 5 year old prouder than being able to read these books to everyone who comes over to visit. He's turning into a person who loves to read and these books have certainly helped a lot.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty decent study guide.......2007-09-12

Getting Oracle certifications is not easy. The material is difficult and extensive not matter how you approach it. The Sybex study guide does a good job of presenting the material in an organized manner.

3 out of 5 stars Good to give you the basics but the test has changed.......2007-09-04

I used this book to study for the OCA test for a month and thought I would pass with my SQL & limited Oracle experience. I did not pass the test because the test has changed to Senario Driven with Multiple Choice & Multiple answers. You would receive a long paragraph about a user's needs. You would need to select two answers out of five; 1 would be easy to pick, 2 would seem wrong and 2 would seem almost identical and right. That is where the test has gotten harder.

Where this book gives you the foundation of all the "What's" involved, the test needs the "Whys".

I recommend SELFTEST software Oracle pushes on thier site. I find the questions and style are very similar to what I had experienced.

I still recommend this book if would like to understand the concepts and have an oracle DB at your disposal
If you then need or want the cert buy the selftest software because I'm positive half of my questions came from that product. By spending your money on both of those products you will still make out very well because the Live course for this subject is around $2,500.

My experience with Oracle has been from the Healthcare IT environment where the database is already set up and just needs tuneing and Reports. If you are an Oracle Finanicials person you may only need the SelfTest software to practice from.

3 out of 5 stars BAD PAPER STOCK USED.......2006-12-13

I just received the book and it looks like it has the content. But I must say that the paper stock used is appalling. I have seen toilet paper thicker than this paper and its already yellowing. You can see the print on the other side of the page! The print and screen shots are so small, maybe they are trying to save paper? I almost considered returning it, but it does have the content. I don't think after the exam you can use this book for a reference since it should have deteriorated by then.

4 out of 5 stars good if you have oracle preknowledge.......2006-05-26

this is the first book i read to prepare for my OCA exam. at first i was a bit overwhelmed because the chapters are quite long and the languages are not very easy to understand (sometimes i have to reread a sentence two or three times before it clicks). but i guess it was also because by then oracle was still rather new for me. if you are an experienced dba (maybe a 9i oca or ocp) then i guess this book alone should be enough to get you a 10g oca. but if you are new to oracle, i would suggest you to study John & Damir book first (OCP All-in-one exam prep guide), it's easier to absorb and the chapters are shorter (although there are more chapters). then, if you still have the time (and the money) get this book to wrap up your preparation for the oca. i'm sure you will pass the exam like i did.
