My 5 year old son loves Superman and loves this book. He loves to peruse the pages, picking out his favorite characters and sections. This is a fun book for younger kids and not nearly as dark as the DC comic Ultimate Guide.

Fans of the animated series will like this book. It's has info data on every character from the series, good artwork and even photo shots from the series. Being a fan of Superman, other fans may like this book.

Superman Guide --great intro for series........2003-06-23

Being a fan of the Superman animated series, I was thrilled to see some a new book come out on this well-written show.

Regrettably, after a measly 52 episodes, WB decided not to produce any more episodes, and just last year DC also decided not to produce any more comics written in the Superman--Animated Series style.

This text is much more kid friendly than Mr. McCloud's other DC Books on the regular DC DK books (Batman, having a few strong illustrations that might be a bit much for the younger crowd).

I was rather surprised at the smaller size of the text, but loved the well-chosen illustrations and text, culled from both the series and short-lived comic book.

An excellent guide to the series, which hopefully can get some more kids and viewers into the show which will be replayed on the Cartoon Network.

I hope Mr. McCloud can continue to do books on Batman Beyond and in a few years, the Justice League (when that particular series has accumulated more episodes).

Still, I wish a few more pages could have included an episode guide to the series, and to the comic book done in that style

A GREAT COMPLEMENT TO THE FILM.......2006-08-07

Continuing their long line of outstanding Visual film guides DK presents "Superman Returns: The Visual Guide" for perhaps the year's most anticipated film. Superman fans know that the fact that this film has finally come out is nothing short of a miracle. For over a decade now there have been rumors and speculation about a new Superman film and who would play the role with names such as Tom Cruise, Nicholas Cage, and Kevin Smith all attached to various Superman film projects at one time or another. There was even discussion of a "World's Finest" version which would team Superman and Batman in the same film.

But finally we got Superman Returns and as usual, DK is on hand with another of their fantastic guides that takes fans through with spotlights on the story, the plots and sub-plots, the locales, and the characters, all with the same fantastic photography we're used to seeing in these books. Rather than focus on the actors, the book instead focuses on the characters and the story, taking us through Superman's birth on the planet Krypton, to his journey to earth where he would be found as an infant and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. Although not a direct sequel to the Christopher Reeves Superman films, it does start with the premise that Superman has already been on Earth for some time and then abruptly disappeared, only to return six years later, just in the nick of time to rescue a plane from crashing.

Throughout the guide we'll explore things such as Lex Luthor's Yacht Gertrude, Superman's Fortress of Solitude, the city of Metropolis, and the Daily Planet building. And of course we will meet all of the major characters in depth including Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Luthor, and Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent. The photography is brilliant as usual with several two-page spreads including one with Superman performing one of his amazing feats of super strength, and another that closely examines Superman's suit that this time is functional as well as fashionable.

In short, this is a book that perfectly complements the film and a great addition to your own library.

Love It!!!!!.......2006-07-13

The book make some senses out of the film, no offense, the movie was well and carefully directed which leave me satisfaction and looking forward to see more. The details in this book show me tiny details that I could not catch from the film such as superman space suit (I like it better than the blue one, so cool!). I suppose that I will go back to see the film one more time. Anyway, the book is great value for money.

Santa brought this book this year and it's quite the hit. It talks about all the things that Superman does from a first person viewpoint. It's pretty neat because when read out loud, it's as if Superman is talking. The book encourages everyone to look out for others and to help those in need, so it definitely sends out a great message. This book is loved a bunch in our house and I highly recommend it!

One of the best!.......2006-07-15

I saw the movie first in Imax 3-D and it was amazing! This script by Bryan Singer is spectacular. The only downside for me (for the movie & script) was the character of Kitty (Lex's dumb girlfriend). Parker Posey is annoying at best. Her only role I liked was in Scream 3. As for the character of Kitty, expect someone shallow , annoying & completely not needed in this story (or movie).

Overall, though, Superman Returns is one of the best scripts for comic book movies out there. You can tell there is a lot of love and insight into the character of Superman. Unfortunately they treat Clark Kent as a disguise only, unlike Smallville where Clark is the real him and Superman will be the disguise.

The plot is a little out there. Lex wants to get his share of money from the world by creating basically a new Krypton on earth. When Lois says (quote from memory, might be off a little) "but it will kill millions" Lex responds "Wrong. Billions!" well who's going to pay to live on this land if billions die? For an evil genius this is Lex's dumbest comments. Sure he is supposed to have a downfall so Superman can beat him, but something so simple should have been better thought out.

Otherwise, the script is very well done. Even if you don't see the movie first, it is a quick read and well worth the buy.

Simple little book which uses pictures from the movie. My son is 2 years old and brings this book for us to read several times per day. Very bright colorful pictures, large type, and simple sentences for early readers. Entertaining for children.

My three-year-old son AND my six-year-old daughter love this book. They take turns pushing the buttons when we reach the corresponding parts in the story. The book does a good job of including many main points of the "Superman Returns" movie, while leaving out certain parts of the movie that would not be appropriate for little children. We are very happy with this book!

My son is 4 1/2 and we gave this to him for Christmas. He loves look & find type things and also has a strong interest in superheroes as of late. He loves the book because it provides him with two of his fovrite things. I only wish it had a few more pages.

The book as mentioned in other reviews, does a good job exlpaining supes powers from a scientific view. Though the author uses the word "speculation" a lot, it doesn't take away how great it is to know that the entity known as superman could exist. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves superman.

Somewhat Interesting.......2003-11-07

Yes, the title of the book is an oxymoron. In spite of this, the author does a fairly good job of examining Superman's powers from a scientific view. I found the background material a bit more interesting than the explanations of the superpowers, primarily because the explanations gave Superman powers far less super than those he has in the comics. Still, there were a few interesting observations, such as that in order to pick up an object such as a large ship, Superman must not only have the strength to lift the ship, but must also have some power which prevents the ship's mass from breaking it in two. I found the explanation of Kryptonite to be particularly disappointing: it's dangerous to Superman, but even more so to Earthlings. Overall, if you're a comic fan you'll probably enjoy reading the book, but it didn't turn out to be as interesting as I thought it would.

An enjoyable synthesis of real science and real fiction.......2003-01-30

Mark Wolverton takes the techniques he developed from writing science history and fact articles for periodicals like "American Heritage" and applies them to arguably the most well-known character in American popular fiction, Superman. Through research and conversations with real scientists, Mr. Wolverton successfully culls actual data and theories necessary to explain how Superman's powers could (and could not) work. The tone is light but never tongue-in-cheek, and while the subjects discussed would not be out of place in a "Scientific American" article, Mr. Wolverton's style is never dry and will certainly keep even a non-technically oriented reader happy and involved. Also some of the revelations concerning Superman's powers portend interesting actual developments for us ordinary men and women.
The book bears the imprimatur of DC comics, so we can assume that the work will be the official explanation of why and how Superman works. It's not every day that a legend get rewritten, and the book will doubtlessly help serve as the foundation for a whole new set of adventures for the Man of Steel (or perhaps more correctly the Man with a Bioelectric Force Field...?).

Wonderful look at science and super powers!!.......2003-01-28

I rushed out to get this book and was not disappointed. Science of Superman takes a very "real World" look at the scientific theories and laws that would govern superman's abilities. Anyone who complains about the book having "too much science and too little Superman" obviously did not get the point of the title!! The scientific aspect of the book, featuring all the theories, laws etc. was well explained in case you have never heard of any of it before, and it is all applied to Superman and how he would function in real life.
Great Read for any Superman fan :)
