Inspired by Debra Frasier's enormously popular On the Day You Were Born, this charming photo journal invites families to celebrate the arrival of their loved one into the natural world. A star-spangled blue sky, crossed by a swath of sunshine yellow with gold birds, introduces the reader to "the very first day you arrived." Baby's picture and name go right in the middle of all the cheery yellow. Turn the page: "You were born on the round planet Earth. Was it day, or was it night?" is printed with another space for a picture and a line to write the date and time of birth against the backdrop of more starry sky with that old blue and green globe plopped in the middle and a figure of a child frolicking across the ocean. On another page, the jubilant child dances across a beach: "On the day you were born waves washed the beaches clean for your footprints. How little were your fingers? How tiny were your toes?"

By adding eight photographs and filling in a few details, parents can create a very special journal for their child, rejoicing together in all the natural wonders of the universe. Here is an ideal gift for the new parents with a vibrant connection to nature. --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars Lovely!.......2007-09-05

I got this book because it was on sale and I am so glad that I did. Seeing it now I would definitely pay full price for it.

It is well-made, adorable, and will make a great keepsake to share with our son.

5 out of 5 stars Magical! .......2007-09-03

This is a book I've given as a birthday gift many times - to new arrivals and those celebrating more birthdays as well. The text is simple yet beautiful and the illustrations provide a warm, magical layer of feeling when reading this book. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful gift for first time parents!.......2007-08-31

I received this book from a good friend when my baby boy was born (our first). I thought the poetry of birth and the natural world was amazing. And the ending where a circle of loved ones welcomed the new baby whispering "We're so glad you've come," reminded me of all the love our family and friends showed our new baby. I can't read it without tearing up. It's a wonderful reminder that all life is sacred and beautiful.
While the art is tribal, not fluffy, and some of the language is advanced for a developing child, I still love this book. Not every board book should be pastels and one syllable words. But I hope this book will be a keepsake that we can read together and remember what a miracle it was that he was born. I want to foster in him the spirit of this book... that all life is connected and we need to try to live in balance with the environment that sustains our lives.

5 out of 5 stars On The Day You Were Born.......2007-07-27

This is a wonderful book to give to any new child or to the grandparent of a new child. I was given one for our new grandson and immediately bought three to give as gifts. The book is something that can become a family tradition to be read on each child's birthday!

5 out of 5 stars Book is AMAZING, CD is so-so.......2007-05-15

I bought this for my son before he was born, and I read it to him all the time - and never with a dry eye! I always buy it as a baby gift for anyone I know who's having a baby of their own. However, unless you find this set for a good price, I might just get the book. My husband calls the CD "hippie music" and he's right - the music is a little, um, groovy and repetitive. Though if you have a sappy friend, get it - books like this and the Giving Tree always make me cry, and if I can have the CD finish the story for me when I get choked up, so much the better.

Sniffling and coughing through a week at home with a cold, Sage (one who shows wisdom, experience, judgment") misunderstands one of Mrs. Page's vocabulary words in the homework assignment, and the resulting embarrassment in front of her fifth-grade class leaves her "devastated: wasted, ravaged. Ruined: destroyed. Finished: brought to an end." Miss Alaineus is not, as Sage determined in her "defective and delirious" mind, "the woman on green spaghetti boxes whose hair is the color of uncooked pasta and turns into spaghetti at the ends." Sage slumps home after the vocabulary bee fiasco, to her mom's comforting, if seemingly impossible words: "There's gold in every mistake." Fortunately, and as always, mothers know best.

Debra Frasier (author-illustrator of On the Day You Were Born) has created a masterpiece of clever wordplay in her hilarious and poignant story of the exquisite pain of schoolgirl mortification. One sentence using vocabulary words from A to Z runs along the bottom or side of each page ("Obliterate me, send me to oblivion--no one could outdo my stupidity"). Not just for word-worms, virtually any kid will identify with the occasionally confusing world of learning, and be reassured by the happy conclusion. Frasier's youthful artwork was inspired by her daughter's fifth-grade desk. "No fancy art supplies; just markers, notebook paper, pencils, glue, and scissors." The result is eminently inviting for grade-school children. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Sage has misheard and misunderstood one of Mrs. Page's weekly vocabulary words. Her error leads to a humbling catastrophe: a momentous tragedy, in front of the entire class. Can Sage turn her vocabulary disaster: an event bringing great misfortune, into a triumph: a true success?
Anyone who has ever been daunted: discouraged or disheartened, by a mere word in the dictionary will cheer wildly: in a manner lacking all restraint, as Sage transforms embarrassment into victory in Debra Frasier's touching story of loving--and mistaking--our glorious language.

I would definately recommend this book to teachers and parents of children in at least 3rd grade. This narrative book has unique and wonderful way of introducing so many vocabulary words. You can find something new each time you read it. Also it addresses quite well dealing with embarrassment. Sage is a great tool to start a discussion about how we can deal with making mistakes in a graceful mannor. Brush up on your vocabulary today!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was excited to share it with my fifth grade class, and they were mesmerized from the very first words...and I began with the Extra Credit Assignment! Anyone who could have watched the enjoyment on the faces of those students would have already ordered their copy of this book. I can tell it was a hit because every student has requested to read it again themselves.

Buy this book! You will not be disappointed!

I bought this book because I wanted to read something related to spelling to my 2nd graded daughter, but it was too difficult for her, and made her loose interest. Maybe in 1 or 2 years will be better.

Book Description

Her USA Today bestseller, Sleep Tight, was called "compelling and real-a great read" by Andrea Kane. "Guaranteed to keep you awake at night," raved Lisa Jackson. Now, Anne Frasier takes readers to the dark side of Savannah, where a female homicide detective must confront the truth about her own past in order to stop a twisted serial killer...

2 out of 5 stars Trying a new author - didn't pan out this time.......2007-06-08

Where were the twists and turns the other reviewers mentioned? The premise of the story sounded very cool when I bought the book. I was disappointed, though, upon reading a few chapters, to find Ms. Frasier's writing amateurish at best.

I was also annoyed to find that Ms. Frasier's publisher apparently failed to have the book fact-checked, as I noted a few glaring errors: cold-turkey withdrawal from Paxil is not as Ms. Frasier describes, and there is no clinical evidence that cold-turkey withdrawal from ANY anti-depressant causes people to "go nuts" or "even kill." Come on, Ms. Frasier - I understand that you're trying to enhance the drama in your story and point out the seriousness of what your character David Gould is going through, and the words "nuts" and "kill" are appropriately inflammatory - problem is, your facts are just plain wrong.

The above and other examples ("every color makes black . . ." - actually every color produces white, and the absence of color produces black) I found laughable at first, but I grew more annoyed as I read further - annoyed enough to give this book and the other Anne Frasier book I have (unread) to my rabbit, who loves to shred books and occasionally eat the pages. I just hope she doesn't get a tummy-ache.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-05-04

This has got to be the most brilliant thriller since "Silence of the Lambs." Frasier, now one of my must-have authors, ropes you in with an ingenious premise that includes modern forensics, local Savannah color that incorporates voodoo, along with fascinating characters haunted by pasts that, like the mounting body-count, seem unwilling to die. I count Frasier among my most favorite authors at this point, having read two of her novels. She's that good.

4 out of 5 stars Great Zombie Book.......2007-03-10

Someone is turning young boys into zombie-prostitutes. Yup, sounds silly, but I assure you that it is a great book. The dark underbelly of Savannah is exposed in this disturbing tale. Young homicide detective Elise is determined to get to the bottom of these strange deaths, and to find out more about her late mother's special powers. To add to the difficulties is Elise
A must for all Zombie fans!

5 out of 5 stars This was just a terrific piece of work.......2006-11-27

Every now and then a book comes along that just grabs you from page one and does not let you down for the entire experience. They are few in number, but his is one of them. This book had great characters, worthy of a sequel. David was well thought out and had demons to deal with. Elise was a terrific heroine with her own shadowy past and messed up relationships to deal with, but never let her personal life get in the way of her professional life as a detective. Elise was extremely capable and did not have to have a clue bite her in the butt to see it. Here were some characters you could really relate to put into very scary situations and they handled them the way a real person might actually handle them. I don't give out many 5 star ratings to books but this one deserves it. The third work I've read by Anne Frasier. All were very good...This was the best, at least I think so.

4 out of 5 stars Walking Dead.......2006-05-07

This is my second time reading Anne Frasier's work. She tends to specialize in the macabre & really creepy crime thrillers. This is no exception bringing in a drug that mimics death & characters who practise voodoo magic to keep readers glued to the plot.

I think its the potent power of the mimic death drug on victims that is the main draw here, you get the creeps on how it entraps victims with paralysis but with their minds remaining active.

Somehow all the talk about Strata Luna's or the voodoo priestess power and the aura she creates fell rather flat as you don't see the effects of it fall on anyone in the plotline. Its just talk about this & that type of spells that you can put a curse on people. In short, it all kind of ended up like folklore rather than adding to the mystery factor.

The detectives are the usual types with the dysfunctional personalities. Elise Sandberg, the female detective, who eagerly seeks to know her past lineage and her sidekick David Gould who reluctantly needs to confront his past.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!.......2007-05-04

I'm new to Anne Frasier and am beginning to wonder what I've been missing. Okay, I devour Minette Walters, Michael Connolley, Karin Slaughter, Ruth Rendell and Val McDermid novels the instant they're published. I ordered this Amazon paperback with limited expectations. But the plot and characters drive this narrative to heights I'd never expected from an "unknown." Forget Patricia Cornwell, Sandra Brown or Lisa Garnder, even. This author writes compelling thrillers. A lean thriller that keeps you flipping the pages at a furious pace in helpless fascination. Brisk character development enhances the narrative, and these aren't cardboard cutouts. Can readers ask for anything more?

3 out of 5 stars Great Mystery!.......2007-01-02

Anne Frasier's novel "Hush" centers around a set of serial killings dubbed the Madonna Murders. Unwed mothers with newborn infants are stalked and both are murdered. At each scene, the killer leaves a snow globe that plays "Hush, Little Baby." Other than the snow globe, the killer leaves nothing behind and has the police baffled. That is until Ivy Dunlap turns up. Ivy was once an unwed single mother with a newborn baby boy. She was attack and her son murdered, though she managed to survive. She went into hiding and the police reported her as dead in the newspaper. Ivy decides that it is time to resurface and help the police catch the madman that killed her son.

This was my first encounter with Anne Frasier and I really enjoyed her work. The mystery element of this novel was well-developed, as were the characters. The crime, the Madonna Murders, was also very intriguing and engrossing. I had trouble putting this book down and was a little creeped out when I read this book at night (I was jumping at every little noise!). This novel was a quick read and one I really enjoyed. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

4 out of 5 stars Glad I found this author.......2006-10-01

I read my first Lisa Gardner book because of a little blurb on the cover saying that Tess Gerritsen said something good about it. I picked up Hush by Anne Frasier because of a quote on the cover by Lisa Gardner. If it's good enough for Lisa, it's good enough for me. I certainly wasn't disapointed. This was a great book with a truly twisted, sicko bad guy. Other reviewers mentioned that there was no wrap up to the book. I went and re- read the ending thinking I had missed something, because it seemed to me that all the loose ends had been taken care of. It seemed pretty clear what the futures of the main characters held. Anyway, this is the first Anne Frasier book I have read and it will not be the last. I loved it. Borders on being 5 star worthy. I'm kind of hoping we get to see Max Irving and Ivy Dunlap together again to solve another crime. Good job, Anne Frasier.

5 out of 5 stars Page turning- attention getting- fast paced- thriller. Outstanding!.......2006-04-23

Anne Frasier's Hush is the best crime/thriller/suspense novel I've read in a long time. Very tight plot line. All questions are answered at the end, yet like real life not everything can be tied up pretty with a red ribbon. Some things are left open ended, but this talented author leads the reader so that they can definitely read between the lines and come up with their own satisfying solutions. The main characters are complex with the same problems real people have. I found myself relating to some of the same issues that Ivy and Max faced on an emotional level. Of course not on the same twisted psycho level! The Killer is not some cardboard cookie cutout bad guy, this guy has real issues! A very complex and frighting character, but one that at times evokes the readers sympathy. Of course he is really crazy and must be stopped! This is fiction, and fiction at it's best. It will keep you entertained until the very end. Some books just go on and on, blah blah blahing, but this storyline keeps jumping ahead and keeps the readers interest, not easy to do with so much on the bookshelves to choose from in this day and age. You will not be disappointed with Hush. I am currently ready Sleep Tight and that story is just as promising as Hush. Anne Frasier is a welcome and refreshing author to this genre! I will continue to buy and enjoy her novels.

4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-11-23

Ann Frasier does "grizzly" better than just about anyone. Her novel Hush is a study of the evil that lurks in the hearts and minds of the most depraved of those that live and walk among us. The frightening part is that evil often looks just like "everyman."

Ivy Dunlap is a criminal profiler living in Canada. She studies the psyches of the most evil killers alive. Her reason for choosing her profession are deeply personal and if known by the world, might mean her own death at the hands of someone who wants to finish some unfinished business.

The Chicago police need Ivy's help. It appears that a retired serial killer is back on the job. But in order to help the police, she must walk from the past she's lived in for sixteen years, into the present and relive her worst nightmare all over again.

And she must trust herself and her partner, Max Irving, Chief Homicide Detective. But Max doesn't believe Ivy is up to the job. How would he respond if he knew Ivy's secret?

Armchair Interviews says: Warning: Read Hush with the lights on and with someone you really know and trust. But then, do we really ever know anyone?

When Lorenzo de' Medici seized control of the Florentine Republic in 1512, he summarily fired the Secretary to the Second Chancery of the Signoria and set in motion a fundamental change in the way we think about politics. The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccolò Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." With just a little imagination, readers can discern parallels between a 16th-century principality and a 20th-century presidency. --Tim Hogan

Book Description

The prince has long been both praised and reviled for its message of moral relativism, and political expediency. Although a large part is devoted to the mechanics of gaining and staying in power, Machiavelli's end purpose is to maintain a just and stabile government. He is not ambiguous in stating his belief that committing a small cruelty to avert a larger is not only justifiable, but required of a just ruler.
Machiavelli gives a vivid portrayal of his world in the chaos and tumult of early 16th century Florence, Italy and Europe. He uses both his contemporary political situation, and that of the classical period to illustrate his precepts of statecraft.

Download Description

Here is the world's most famous master plan for seizing and holding power. Astonishing in its candor The Prince even today remains a disturbingly realistic and prophetic work on what it takes to be a prince... a king... a president.

When, in 1512, Machiavelli was removed from his post in his beloved Florence, he resolved to set down a treatise on leadership that was practical, not idealistic. In The Prince he envisioned what would be unencumbered by ordinary ethical and moral values; his prince would be man and beast, fox and lion. Today, this small sixteenth-century masterpiece has become essential reading for every student of government, and is the ultimate book on power politics.

1 out of 5 stars A Truely Overrated Book.......2007-09-19

"The Prince" is essentially a "how-to" guide for royalty durring the 1400's in Italy. I'm not going to make this review very long... a short review for a short book. It gets one star. Why? It's a very out dated classic. The advice and philosophical ramblings handed out in this book is quite specific to its time and place, and unlike, say The Communist Manefesto, for example, are no long relevant to us. In fact, it would probably be downright criminal today to run your country in the way Machiavelli suggests you do. This book would be a good read if you are interested in the history of Italian principalities durring this time period. Other than that, there is really no reason to read it. The morality of the book is actually very objectionable, and on top of that... its REALLLLLY borring.

It's probably considered to be a classic work of literature because it is just old. That's all. If I wrote some crap right now about the mythical underpants gnomes, and it survived for 600 years, people in 2600 BC would probably be saying "FIVE STARS for the Underpants Gnome Chronicals. This a great relic from the year 2007! Such insight into their ideology and beliefs...."

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2007-09-06

This book is for serious philosophical readers.

Machiavelli broke down a raw and ruthless political idea. I read the Art of War before this book, and they are similar. However, Machiavelli is much more aggressive. If you're reading this book for entertainment, it can be dry at times. Nonetheless, the information in this book is timeless, and should be an enjoyment for interested readers only.

4 out of 5 stars Non Fiction.......2007-09-03

How to be in charge, and how to stay that way. At least in an Italian political sense amidst the power structures of the time.

Some of this is of course relevant to a lot of situations. More so if you are a dictator as opposed to being the Minister for Water Supply or the Arts, of course.

An interesting book.

4 out of 5 stars Machiavelli's The Prince.......2007-08-05

This is an interesting book, especially for those involved in social and political issues. In some moments, Machiavelli's words shock us because he suggests some cruel and even evil means for the Prince to achieve success. However, the book's "Introduction" and the "Translator's note" warn us that these ideas were common in the Machiavelli's time (1469-1527). Some parts of the book are a little boring because they refer to several people (princes, kings, popes, etc) and facts which are unknown for the common reader (like me). Nevertheless, the general principles defended by Machiavelli in each chapter are not lost by those aspects, and we can understand them perfectly. There is one especially rich chapter, the one entitled "whether it is better to be loved than feared, or rather feared than loved". I had a great time reading it.

5 out of 5 stars This book will have you in stitches!.......2003-06-06

I just recently got hold of this book and I must say, I'm glad I did. Thorough in every way, witty, and full of Frasier facts, no hardcore fan of the show should be without it. What I especially love about this book is that each actor is interviewed individually and gives their insights on their own characters as well as the other characters of the show. There is also a brief summary of the first 72 episodes as well as the entire script of the pilot "The Good Son" and bios of each leading cast member (even Eddie & his trainer!); not to mention lots of great photos. Frasier is without a doubt one of the most intelligent and hilarious American sit-coms ever aired and this companion book really does the show justice. Highly recommended :)

Sit in on "The Dr. Frasier Crane Show" at KACL, and discover the origins of Dr. Crane's calling card, "I'm listening". Take a trip down memory lane with the show's creators and learn how "Frasier" actually came to grace our screens. Get to know the people involved with the show and let them take you through "A Week in the Life of Frasier" - from first draft to final take in just seven days. Could you ask for more? Well, actually, yes you could. You also get a list of the show's "guest callers"; an episode guide to the first, second and third series; a "Frasier" trivia quiz; the entire script of the show's first ever episode, "The Good Son"; colour photographs; full biographies of the characters and the cast and a whole host of other morsels that a true "Frasier" connoisseur would just die for. This book is everything a long-term fan of the show could wish for, as well as a great way to familiarize yourself with the world of "Frasier" if you've only just discovered it. As anyone who loves the show as much as I do will tell you, when you watch "Frasier" you come to recognise and love its characters, its situations. With every episode you learn a little something about life and you grow a little in spite of yourself. And suddenly the world doesn't seem such a bad place after all. So, my advice? Watch "Frasier", read "Frasier", eat, breathe and sleep "Frasier". And save yourself a fortune in therapist's bills.....

5 out of 5 stars A Great book for the Frasier fan or occasional Chef.......2007-01-02

Something that just arrived in the mail is "Cafe' Nervosa: The Connoisseur's Cookbook," an eclectic collection of recipes ostensibly from Frasier, Daphne, and the entire crew. I love to cook and I'm always on the outlook for new recipes and this is a fine collection of some really interesting ones. The picture I've uploaded is one of my favorites, Mocha Nervosa Walnut Bread.

The book is divided into four sections, Man Can Live by Bread Alone (breads and desserts); Let's do Lunch (small, relatively simply meals); Just Bring Two Forks (ornate, you-better-think-about-it meals); and Some Like it Hot (coffees and drinks). Sprinkled throughout the book are quotes and bits from the show. The book also has an index for quick lookup. At 108 pages, it's not a huge book, but well written and just quirky enough to keep your interest. And the recipes are easy enough that almost anyone (that is, me) can do them without getting lost or having to travel to Trader Joe's for some obscure ingredient.

5 out of 5 stars A thorough delight with recipes that really work!.......2005-07-10

If you are a fan of Frasier, the book alone is worth it! If you enjoy good food that anyone can make, this book is for you. I wouldn't miss the chance to own it.

5 out of 5 stars Recipies That Are GREAT & Perfect For ANY Fan Of "Frasier!".......2000-09-11

You cannot go wrong with any cookbook that is published by Oxmoor House; and their cookbooks by Southern Living magazine & are EXCELLENT! I know because we have been using their books for over 21 years for ALL sorts of events, both formal and informal. I was delighted to see that they teamed up with Dr. Frasier Crane, and his brother Dr. Niles Crane to give us these GREAT receipes from the Cafe Nervosa. From the opening pages it will become VERY clear that this NOT a book to be taken lightly! The first color photograph that you see is for Prosciutto-and-Fontina Panini which is delicious! There are recipies for a number of muffins, biscuits and scones. There is a Cappuccino Biscotti that is very easy to make, a Mocha Nervosa Walnut Bread, Buttermilk Pancakes, and a Silken Sour Cream Coffee Cake. You will also find a great section that has recipes for lunch. There are several GOOD dessert Recipes, and yes, COFFEE!! All of this in just 105 pages, containing 12 full page color photographs of several finished recipes. You will also get MANY quotes from Frasier, Niles, Daphnae, Martin and Roz, which are witty and funny!

If you are as big a fan of "Frasier" as I am, and LOVE GOOD food, then this very CLEVER cookbook is bound to please!!

5 out of 5 stars Real recipes that really work!.......1999-07-20

Every recipe I have tried has worked beautifully. Despite the appearances that this is just a novelty book, the ideas and combinations really create tasty foods. The dishes are fun and creative. Delicious!

5 out of 5 stars Seattle has produced a winner!.......1999-06-17

Being from the same city as Frasier and Niles Crane, I must admit that this is a great cookbook with tasty recipes. I feel sorry for Niles that his relationship with Maris hasn't worked out. Still I believe this is the book for anyone who likes the show. Even if you don't watch "Frasier," you should still try their recipes. Keep the faith, Niles! You'll find somebody.

The Art of War is the Swiss army knife of military theory--pop out a different tool for any situation. Folded into this small package are compact views on resourcefulness, momentum, cunning, the profit motive, flexibility, integrity, secrecy, speed, positioning, surprise, deception, manipulation, responsibility, and practicality. Thomas Cleary's translation keeps the package tight, with crisp language and short sections. Commentaries from the Chinese tradition trail Sun-tzu's words, elaborating and picking up on puzzling lines. Take the solitary passage: "Do not eat food for their soldiers." Elsewhere, Sun-tzu has told us to plunder the enemy's stores, but now we're not supposed to eat the food? The Tang dynasty commentator Du Mu solves the puzzle nicely, "If the enemy suddenly abandons their food supplies, they should be tested first before eating, lest they be poisoned." Most passages, however, are the pinnacle of succinct clarity: "Lure them in with the prospect of gain, take them by confusion" or "Invincibility is in oneself, vulnerability is in the opponent." Sun-tzu's maxims are widely applicable beyond the military because they speak directly to the exigencies of survival. Your new tools will serve you well, but don't flaunt them. Remember Sun-tzu's advice: "Though effective, appear to be ineffective." --Brian Bruya

Book Description

"All warfare is based on deception. Thus, when able to attack, we must seem unable. Hold out bait to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is quick to anger, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant."
Written before Alexander the Great was born, this Chinese treatise on war has become one of the most influential works on the subject. Read widely in the east since its appearance 2500 years ago, The Art of War first came to the west with a French Jesuit in1782. It has been studied by generals from Napoleon to Rommel and it is still required reading in most military academies of the world.
Although it was meant to be a practical guide to warfare in the age of chariots, many corporate and government leaders have successfully applied its lessons to battles in the modern dog-eat-dog world. Sun Tzu covers all aspects of war in his time, from strategy and tactics to the proper use of terrain and spies. In this version, Sun Tzu's lessons are brought to life with commentaries from ancient Chinese history, which illustrate both the philosophy and the principles of his teachings.

Sun Tzu's classic treatise on the art of warfare

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Oldest Treatise on Game Theory.......2007-09-30

There are many translations of this work which has long been in the public domain. This is the popular translation by Lionel Giles made even more popular by the introduction from the best-selling author of Japan epics, James Clavell. It contains Giles' commentary along with the translation. The annotations give historical examples of the strategies in action.

Game theory is calculated strategy. The Art of War by Sun Tzu is probably the oldest and most important book on game theory ever written. It is the culmination of the development of the best warfare tactics prior to the 5th century BC. It is considered the foundation for all military plans and is still used to this day. It is most popular for its ability to win wars without fighting one. Its application has shaped the world as we know it.

The Art of War can be understood as a breakdown of the chaos of warfare into components that can be analyzed and understood. The tactics are mostly about controlled organization, recognizing environments and situations and the correct response to each one. Organization is subject to change in competition. The Art of War is essentially the strategy of responding to changing environments. Response is thus relative to evolving conditions.

1 - "Laying Plans"
The core message of this chapter is to calculate as much as possible before committing yourself. Important themes include discipline, ethics, environmental conditions and assessing the competition. It's about setting up the mission and evaluating the competition.

2 - "Waging War"
The important detail of this chapter is to win as quickly and as economically as possible. Prolonged struggle means wasting resources and undermining confidence. When winning, use the spoils as rewards and capital. It's about making war pay.

3 - "Attack by Stratagem"
This chapter is about deployment of the previous two chapters. The central message is to know thyself and know thy enemy. This stage indicates problems such as sieges, bad management and interior anarchy or legal/government interference. Advantages such as good management, exploiting opportunities and attacking tactics are covered. Strength is about cohesiveness and is independent of size.

4 - "Tactical Dispositions"
This one stresses putting yourself in a position where you cannot be defeated and waiting for the opportunity to defeat the enemy. It is about recognizing the breaks and taking them as opposed to creating the breaks.

5 - "Energy"
This part focuses on the power of deception to lull the enemy into a false sense of security and the use of spies to learn the enemy's moves. It also stresses the need to evolve in battle. It's about building up war capability.

6 - "Weak Points and Strong"
This chapter encapsulates all the previous five chapters into an advanced war strategy producing outcomes, calculating and responding to events as they unfold. The strategies are developed here. It is about creating breaks.

7 - "Maneuvering"
This deals with managing units and the internal problems they face on top of how to respond during movement to various circumstances. It is a chapter based on types of situations and responses.

8 - "Variation of tactics"
This section expands on the evolution of tactics and strategies based on situations and responses but concentrates on what causes failure.

9 - "The Army on the March"
This is advanced maneuvering especially across long distances with different terrains and how to deal with encounters. It is about interpretation.

10 - "Terrain"
This describes the various terrains that an army can encounter and when and how to occupy them. It talks about distances, potential dangers and obstructions. Positioning is important.

11 - "The Nine Situations"
This piece explains the condition of each terrain in terms of its tactical advantages and disadvantages and how to deal with both. It is a very intensive chapter because of the number of complex conditions dealt with.

12 - "The Attack by Fire"
Arson in war is probably the single most troubling weapon that an army could have inflicted on the enemy around 500 BC. This chapter is obviously based on the most advanced weapons of the time which have since been developed. It is about using the principle of creating disorder and chaos to win.

13 - "The Use of Spies"
Without spies don't war. War is won based on foreknowledge not by calculation but by direct information about the plans of the other side from spies. Spies are managed in this chapter.

Even though the work is quite short (about 100 pages or less with commentary) it is complex enough to warrant several readings. It is the equivalent to learning how to play advanced chess, a game which compliments this study. There is a lifetime of thought within the pages. Napoleon was said to have used it and lost when he didn't follow it.

The Art of War has become one of the most important self help books of this century popularized in big business as many executives have had recourse to this material because it offers a sound winning strategy. Most readers come away believing that the book's message finds it adaptable to many environments because it is all about adjusting to variations and so can be applied to anything and everything.

The Art of War is not supposed to be an exciting read. It is a strategy book, a step by step guide to how battles are won and why they are lost. It is more to be memorized as a set of responses, including when not to respond, than to be understood. The combinations of the responses are unlimited. There is enough on the plate without asking why. Understanding why would come later and the answers to these questions would come from a very sophisticated understanding of the theory. It is an endeavor that remains open to the reader if they can come to terms first with the information that is here.

Even if the book is not followed up on by subsequent study it can still leave a long lasting impression with its tips on discipline and achieving goals. It is great value for the amount of information contained in such a short burst. It will get you thinking strategically and that is more or less its claim to fame.

5 out of 5 stars A well thought out treatise, all in a little book.......2007-09-12

A very good treatise on the Taoist perspective on war. It carries so many parallels to today's modern combat, and is required reading in Asian businesses and for Asian military officers, especially the Chinese People's Liberation Army. It's a fairly easy read and very good to understand as well. Compare it to the Machiavelli book of the same name and you'd see a stark contrast to it. Recommended for those who want to learn what would be good military strategy and tactics, especially if those support a military with greater autonomy than many countries have now.

5 out of 5 stars The Optimistic Jew.......2007-08-31

B.H. Liddell Hart's favorite military thinker even though he lived 2,000 years earlier. Like Liddell Hart his thought transcends the military sphere and influenced me in my writing of "The Optimistic Jew". Worthwhile reading even today.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading at many military colleges around the world.......2007-08-21

Written in approximately 470 BC, The Art of War is a Taoist treatise on martial and political philosophy ... one of the most famous ever written, and one of the most often quoted. The fact that it is still popular and well quoted, after more than 2,000 years, should say something about its timeless qualities.

It's composed as a list of terse, keen and ingenious observations, sayings, and maxims ... with various translators over the centuries each adding their own interpretations and commentary. There's something on almost every topic ... from siege planning, use of formations & maneuvering, the virtues of adaptability and cunning, speed, the use of positioning & terrain, disinformation and the use of spies, etc.

The author's advice spans both low level tactics ["do not stop an army on its way home" {Brad: because they'll be more likely to fight to the death} ... "a surrounded army must be given a way out" {Brad: channel their retreat into a killing zone of your own creation}] ... and high level strategic thinking ["a superior militarist foils enemy plots without the need to fight; the next best {strategy} is to ruin their alliances; next {best strategy} after that is to attack their armed forces; worst {strategy} is to beseige their cities"]

It's required reading at many military colleges around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Human Nature.......2007-05-24

The reason this book is a timeless classic is because it analyzes all aspects of war from the standpoint of human nature, and makes a solid case that any endeavor that fails to take into account human nature is doomed to failure. Because the subject is warfare, including its causes, and the analysis is solid, one is left with not only the first order result (how to handle a war situation effectively) but also a life changing understanding of the humbling constraints of human existence and the pragmatics of applied psychology. Anyone who is bored by this book (and this particular one is excellent) is not yet ready to learn basic lessons about human existence. Anyone who is capable of humility will be changed by this book. It should be read by everyone, several times throughout life.

Book Description

With her national bestselling debut, Hush, Anne Frasier joined the ranks of Tami Hoag, Lisa Gardner, and Kay Hooper as a strong new voice in blockbuster suspense fiction. Now she pits a female FBI profiler against a serial killer whose violent history has ties to her own tragic past.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Soooo Disappointing.......2007-04-28

Minneapolis police have a serial killer on their hands, one who is targeting blonde women, removing their eyes, and grafting flowers onto their fingers. Police immediately suspect a recently released convict of the crimes, but once the man is jailed and the murders continue to happen, police must scramble to find the real killer before more women die.

This is the last Anne Frasier book I will be reading. The plot was just dull. There was no excitement or thrill to this supposed thriller. There was a sibling rivalry aspect to this novel, between police officers, that was just silly. And the murdered friend angle was a giant yawn. Overall, I find Anne Frasier's novels to disappointing. I would not recommend them to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but the last chapter...welllll...........2006-10-12

I think this would have rated 5 stars from me had the last chapter been just a little different in some way, and I really can't say how. I kind of guessed earlier in the book where this second plot was going and thought it might be resolved in some way, which it was, but after the intensity of the main plot, the last chapter just sort of let me down. I agree with anyone who is calling for a Mary Cantrell sequel...Even a Gillian Cantrell sequel, one in which Gillian has a little more luck. The bottom line though is that this is one very good book, with some terrific characters and police agencies who actually get over their personal lives when police work needs to be done and they do some investigating. Anne Frasier did a great job of showing characters who have personal lives and professional lives and how they interact but don't interfere. Truly a page turner. This is the second book by her that I have read. Can't wait to start the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Blonde High School Girls Beware.......2006-03-26

I was able to solve the sub-plot murder but could not nail the murderer for the major plot. My score 1 out of 2, not bad. This does not mean that the story lacks depth of intrigue and plot turning angles to stall you. It is not a dead give away.

The writing is incredible as it lifts you away breathlessly with a seamless flow from how the murderer thinks to how FBI detective, Mary, conducts a methodical analysis of the murderer as she is a trained behavioral scientist to scenes of cosy family atmoshphere that Mary's mother Blythe has created for her two daughters. Past and present are cleverly interwined with no abrupt beginnings or endings to jolt you out of the blue.

Family tensions also stews between Mary & her sister, Gillian, due to an unresolved murder of Mary's high school friend, Fiona that happened more than ten years ago. Romantic tension for Mary comes in the form of her FBI partner, Anthony.

Somehow the resolution for the main plot's murder was rather contrived. I thought the ending would be more in step with what happened to the rest of the victims rather than making an exception.

A very good read that scores very high in the crime thriller category!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-02-16

Anne Frasier really knows how to churn them out. Her books always leave you with a feeling of not being able to put them down once you've started them. After finishing them, you can't wait to pick up her next one.

Sleep Tight is true to form. Every time I put this book down, I had to pick it up to read some more. I must have guessed wrong, on "who did it" several times. Her characters are so real they jump out of the page at you.

I recommend this book highly.

"My mother says you can ask the ocean to bring you something. If you look, she says, you might find it." So begins the child narrator in Debra Frasier's Out of the Ocean, a loving tribute to the sea. For over 35 years, Frasier's family lived just north of Vero Beach, Florida, in a house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. During that time, she combed the shore, took many pictures, and finally wrote this beachy paean. Close-up photographs of sand allow readers to see every raspy grain, and cut-paper collages splash across the sandy, shell-strewn background to form incoming surf or dune plants such as periwinkle and hibiscus. As readers walk along the shore with the author, we find beach glass, flotsam, a little jetsam, pelican feathers, black skate egg pouches, and other shore-side marvels. The little girl asks the ocean to show her treasures like these, but her mother asks for things that are too big to carry home--water, the sun, the moon, the sound of waves. A glossary in the back provides more information on shells, finding messages in bottles, and egg pouches, and plants and trees, in addition to things too big to carry home. If you've ever wanted to introduce the ocean to a child who's never seen it, this book captures the dreamy sights, smells, sounds, and textures. (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Open this book and you'll be walking along the ocean shore, looking for all kinds of special things. Some will be small enough to fit in your hand--like shells and sea glass. Others--like the sun and the sky and the waves--will be too big to carry home. But no matter what your journey holds, you'll soon learn that looking for the ocean's treasures can be as important as finding them.
Debra Frasier, author-illustrator of the bestselling On the Day You Were Born, invites you along on this beach journey of discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written.......2007-09-28

I read this book for the first time when a toddler that I watch picked it out of her stack of books. I didn't know what to expect, but found that I was captivated from the very first sentence. The words are like poetry. The conversation between mother and daughter about the ocean flows beautifully, and actually caused me choke up a bit. I ran out buy it for MY child's literature collection!

In a time of mushrooming materialism and tearing technomania, this delightful book for all ages pays homage to life's precious treasures that can be so easily taken for granted if we are not careful to notice them. Debra Frasier's enchanting collages combine cutouts, photographs, and words to eloquently remind us of the simple pleasures that are right under our noses if we remain open and take a moment to appreciate them.
