In depth book on what the cast pursued after the airing & how the experience was for them. A break down section of each castmember telling how they got cast on the show. On the first four casts when the show was still experimental. Also includes section on NY season female castmembers on the vacation trip to Jamiaca. A Puck vs Judd section funny stuff & where are they now section. Entertaining book for fans of the first four seasons NY-London.

This book is good for the Real World fanatic or just the average fan. It summarizes everything that happened in each episode at the beginning of each cast section. The Real Real World has some wonderful pictures of the cast and is a great way to learn more about the cast even if you watched each and every show.

This book offers little in the way of things you always wanted to know. I found the layout quite annoying. I had to keep flipping the book on it's side to read what was written on the sides. I got a headache after reading it.
If you're a fan of the Real World you should skip this book and get the "Ultimate Insiders Guide." It has more information and is better on the eyes!

Each persons life was described and feelings you never heard were shared. The book is great for someone who watches the show regularly or for someone who just watches it sometimes and wants to get to know the characters better

Loved Learning About The Real World.......2004-11-22
In the spirit of those who have already posted reviews on this book, I too confess my guilty pleasure is reality TV. While I have not taken too much to many of the new shows, I have been an avid and loyal fan of The Real World way back to the first New York season.
I have had the fortunate opporutnity to meet Joe, in person, twice now. Once, a few years back at the National Inventors Hall of Fame's Collegiate Inventors Awards, and again on the subway in Manhattan just a few weeks ago. Joe was kind enough to let me know of his book after I told him how much I enjoy The Real World. He promised a great read that would provide new perspective on what I considered to be great television.
Boy, was he right!
Joe's retrospective on The Real World - from the process of getting on the show to what life was like during the filming and post production - proves highly enlightening. While I still tune in weekly to the new seasons of The Real World, I watch through totally different eyes. I now notice how footage is edited out of sequence to create larger drama and storylines that are not necessarily accurate. I also pay closer attention to each individual and watch how they are stereotyped into a certain role. We all may think we now each of the "seven strangers" by the time the season wraps, however; I now feel almost cheated that we really don't. We have our perceptions - they own the reality.
Joe's anecdotes, tidbits, shared sorrows, triumphs and debaucles all shed a bright new light on a phenomenon that will continue to entertain. But in a new way for this reader.

this is a really good book. I have read it a couple of times it is an easy read. and very interesting.I thought that the Miami cast was the best real world that I have seen. this book is very hard to put down once you start reading it. if you love the real world you will love this book! great job Joe you really know how to write.

I've been a fan of 'The Real World' for years and I had no idea it wasn't all it's cracked up to be until I read Joe's book. He has a gift for writing and his book showed everyone just what a reality tv show can do to someone's private life. After reading his book, I realized there's no way I'd be able to be in the same situation he was but I give him credit for making through it and coming out on top. I love the Real World and I always try and buy the books that come out after the show has ended. I was disappointed with this one because it came out in the middle of the series and gave away stuff that happened in the latter part of the series. I know that it's not a movie, where the ending matters, but I was bummed to learn the Keri and Kyle ended up leaving on bad terms. After watching the show it made more sense to me, but while reading the book I learned that they weren't talking and didn't know if they could ever be friends again. I was bummed to get information from the book that I hadn't yet seen on the show. It seems like some of the earlier Real World books tell more secrets and off-camera stuff. Get it from the library!

This book was the perfect addition to the Real World legacy. Its such a great show but even though MTV shows it about 600 hundred times you can't see and understand everypart of it so this book explains all the things that are completely over your head. It also gives further insight into the cast members' personalities that sometimes aren't shown in the confessionals.

Not a bad book at all. It's a nice insight on what they really thought. Ever wondered what really happened between Kevin and Lori? What did the roommates think of Nicole's Bobby? What castmembers felt left out? Why did the Jisela and Malik relationship go sour? It's all in there with a lot more. Each castmember has a section in which they narrate, then they have casting exceprts. In each cast member's section, they are critiqued by their roommates and the crew. There is a section dedicated to all the drama that went down. If you liked the New Orleans season, you can catch up with that group. All in all, it's a good book. I'd definitely say it's a must-have for any "Real World" fan.
It's Back!.......2001-12-27
I recieved this as a gift for Christmas. Being the big Real World fan I am, I read the book within a short period of time. Wow, I didn't know how much tension there was between them. Ofcorse, watching the show, you could see there were several arguments. The book goes into great detail so you can really understand what everything was about.
This book gives you everything. Cast Bios, Cast Opinions, and tells you things that you would have least expected! The only thing I wish is that it was longer, or they'd release another book on this season because I'm left wanting to know more and more.
They also included information on The New Orleans cast. Man, it seems like they all hate each other now. However, there still are some friendships still happening. Danny remains loyal to everybody. Julie and Melissa are friends. Everybody HATES David and thinks Matt is a little full of himself.
All in all, this is the #1 item for a typical Real World fan. Get it!

This book was every thing you wanted to know about the show Real World. It gave all the details of the number one show on MTV. It was interesting and very informitive. It even had an application for the show. I recommend this book if your in to reality tv. I mean it's the show that started it all. You will be amazed by what all happened in this crazy house in Hawaii.

well i loved the real world hawaaii season. i thought it was one of the best seasons. i loved the cast except for kaia. the book goes into depth of all the romances,the trip to india, the cast, and the incident of some guy breaking into the real world house and taking matt's daily planner. this is a great book and i recommend it to both people who watched rw8 and people who didnt watch.

I would rather stick needles in my eyes than to watch the real world or read their books. Im sure that the 14-year-old giggly-girl demographic will probably love reading and watching a show about boring college students, but the average 18-40 year old will not find this interesting. For anyone out there who hasn't seen the real world and is thinking about purchasing this book, I will sum up the real world for you. It is about 7 spoiled brats, under the age of 25, who live in a million dollar mansion and tell every boring detail about their lives to the cameras. Sound interesting? Then buy this book.

The book gives a relly good insight on the Hawaii cast! It has sections written by each cast member (including Justin) about the experience of the show. Then, all the other cast members share their thoughts on each other! Colin comes with some really good info! There is a section that tells about the house they lived in, w/ an intersesting article about a theif who broke into the house. There are sections written by Becky (N.Y), Jason (Boston), and Neil (London). There is another section that tells the favorite hang-outs of the cast. There are parts that talk about major events that happened. It is cool, because each cast member narrats the section. There is an update on the Seattle cast to! The Seattle cast (Irene isn't in it) narrates their section, and they tell about their embarassing moments, fashion flops, who the stayed in touch w/, and etc. There is an application for the show to! There are tons of nice pictures!

Poor Layout for my favorite RW Season.......2003-09-01
New Orleans is my favorite season of Real World thus far, and i am a little disappointed in the contents and layout of this book in comparison to editions for later seasons (ie, chicago and las vegas). Instead of putting cast member information in an orderly fashion, they throw around the facts over various pages. castmember david's fact sheet is also suspiciously missing. I didn't like the rw reunion junk at the back of the book to pad its length. they should have included the floor plans of the house and more photos taken by the cast instead of this.

If you watched the Real World New Orleans, this is a great guide to what you didn't see. If you DIDN'T watch the show, well, then there's no reason to buy the book!
My favorite part about the book was the information about the Kelley/Danny and Melissa/Jamie "feud." With quotes from the sources themselves, it adds even more drama than was on the show! VERY interesting!

I liked this Real world book a lot in fact I like most of them, all except Seattle which was incredibly boring . But this book gives you a lot of insight into what the camera didn't show. Some of the things mentioned don't seem to make sense b/c when you see the reunions on tv they don't act towards each other they way that you would think w/some of the comments that they have made about each other in this book. Besides that it is well worth your money and time to read it.
The Truth Be Told.......2001-04-16
It's amazing how much is told in this book that wasn't revealed on the show. This book gives the show and the cast (which I think is the most interesting cast yet) more depth. The thing dealt with most in the book is something that wasn't hardly dealt with on the show, and that's Kelley and Danny's dislike of Melissa and Jamie. There's way more content than that, but that is what's focused on a bit. 'Unmasked' also put to rest the answer of some questions, such as "Why was Kelley not in the house a lot?" and "What did Matt really think of Julie the whole time she crushed on him?". All the cast members let out what they really thought about each other, and some of the results could be surprising. All in all, I found that this season and this book is the best ever. Can't wait until next season!

A well written and organized collection of information on the Seattle season. There is a nice in-depth chapter for each of the cast members. There is a chapter on the departure of Irene, the challenge against "Road Rules", and a chapter on relationships in the house. The book reveals some Seattle hot spots, and a in-depth look at Pier 70. Also featured, is an update from the Boston roommates. They update us and share some retrospective comments. Overall, it is a good book. It has really good pictures. I would say that it is a must for any "Real World" fan.

This book is a MUST for anyone who watched the series. It's packed with loads of info on the cast, and it's full of text and pictures. Plus there's comments from the producers, and they tell you why they casted each cast member. If you liked the series, then you'll love this book. A must for any Real World fan.

Wow! What a Homerian epic of literature! This really made me think! I may even revise my personal eschatology in light of the depth and sincerity I find here. Gosh, it rivals Proust!

This was an awesome way to end one of my favorite Real World casts. Seattle is the best. Tons of behind-the-scenes info. Including the entire Irene/Stephen incident, the Kira/David romance (Romeo and Juliet style), and tons of photos of the guys and gals of our fav cast. Definitely worth the money.

a guide to life for the MTV generation.......2003-11-23
For those kids whose substitute parents were the television and mainly MTV, this book picks up where the broadcast leaves off and further parents the child in the ways of the world. Getting a job, keeping a job, putting up the crap from co-workers, managing money, paying bills and more.
Supposedly a guide for the "real world," this tough-love guide tries to tell you how it is and how to get by after you manage to leave college and your parents finally kick you out of the house.
Like the pop-generation TV network and its programs, the book is matter of fact about ups and downs in life and offers no guidance in morals or even a pat on the back. No love, just self-affirmation and a perpetuation of the feeling of entitlement that this "lost" generation is so often encouraged to foster.
The book does have some valuable, useful information, but it is in many ways in a vacuum... peppered with photos of pop icons does not make this a warm, fuzzy guide and it can be coma-inducing if you try to read it cover to cover.
