Book Description
Tracy Kidder is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the author of the bestsellers
The Soul of a New Machine,
House,
Among
Schoolchildren, and
Home
Town. He has been described by the Baltimore Sun as the “master of the non-fiction narrative.” This powerful and inspiring new book shows how one person can make a difference, as Kidder tells the true story of a gifted man who is in love with the world and has set out to do all he can to cure it.
At the center of
Mountains Beyond Mountains stands Paul Farmer. Doctor, Harvard professor, renowned infectious-disease specialist, anthropologist, the recipient of a MacArthur “genius” grant, world-class Robin Hood, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat, and in medical school found his life’s calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. This magnificent book shows how radical change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and it also shows how a meaningful life can be created, as Farmer—brilliant, charismatic, charming, both a leader in international health and a doctor who finds time to make house calls in Boston and the mountains of Haiti—blasts through convention to get results.
Mountains Beyond Mountains takes us from Harvard to Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia as Farmer changes minds and practices through his dedication to the philosophy that "the only real nation is humanity" - a philosophy that is embodied in the small public charity he founded, Partners In Health. He enlists the help of the Gates Foundation, George Soros, the U.N.’s World Health Organization, and others in his quest to cure the world. At the heart of this book is the example of a life based on hope, and on an understanding of the truth of the Haitian proverb “Beyond mountains there are mountains”: as you solve one problem, another problem presents itself, and so you go on and try to solve that one too.
“
Mountains Beyond Mountains unfolds with the force of a gathering revelation,” says Annie Dillard, and Jonathan Harr says, “[Farmer] wants to change the world. Certainly this luminous and powerful book will change the way you see it.”

An Amazing Man.......2007-10-04
This book is inspiring but troubling as well. I am a nurse and find his ideas of medicine/poverty to be right on target. Fighting the system is what is hard, he manages to do so at least in his areas of clinical work. His take on poverty and the world economic systems while not new, is seen through the eyes of a scientist and an anthropoligist which gives it a slightly new twist. For anyone interested in a larger world view I would recommend this book. Dr. Farmer is a unique man and his efforts, where ever he is, to change the world's systems is a challenge to us all.
Very Good.......2007-09-25
Although I had to read this book for a mandatory assignment, it was not a labored read. The author writes in a way that allows the reader to continue reading easily and endlessly until the book is finished, or stop whenever the reader needs a break. The story is eye-opening and enlightening while arousing feelings of anger towards the governments overseas conduct with "democracy" and aiding big business. The tale is capturing and the read is light. The only reason it wasn't a five star is because I wasn't very fond of the assignment.
Awesome.......2007-09-15
Kidder's biographical account of the life and work of Dr. Paul Farmer is moving and munumental and reads like a novel---a compliment from me. The determination of one man supported by competent and trusted colleagues is an awesome monument to the power of the human spirit. Also opens American minds and hearts to the povery lying just off our borders in Haiti. Kidder's narrative is superbly told and presented most effectively with a plot line that moves in and out between past and present. Compact, concise and compelling.
Inspirational.......2007-09-05
It's wonderful that one man can turn his passion into something that benefits so many!
Tracy Kidder does it again.......2007-08-28
Tracy Kidder writes with real understanding of his subjects. From "Soul of the New Machine" to "Old Friends", his ability to understand his subjects at a very deep level comes through. Mounts Beyond Mountains is Tracy's best yet. I'd never heard of Paul Farmer when I started this book. Now I feel like I know and really understand him.

Surely among the most lovable of all Dr. Seuss creations, Horton the Elephant represents kindness, trustworthiness, and perseverance--all wrapped up, thank goodness, in a comical and even absurd package. Horton hears a cry for help from a speck of dust, and spends much of the book trying to protect the infinitesimal creatures who live on it from the derision and trickery of other animals, who think their elephant friend has gone quite nutty. But worse is in store: an eagle carries away the clover in which Horton has placed the life-bearing speck, and "let that small clover drop somewhere inside / of a great patch of clovers a hundred miles wide!" Horton wins in the end, after persuading the "Who's" to make as much noise as possible and prove their existence. This classic is not only fun, but a great way to introduce thoughtful children to essentially philosophical questions. How, after all, are we so sure there aren't invisible civilizations floating by on every mote? (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr
Book Description

I love the way Seuss takes the daily problems puts them to poetry and sends them on their way. It is great
I love Horton!.......2007-06-28
This is a great book - one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books! Besides the fabulous rhymes and rhythm, the story is a great one about loyalty. Great for kids or adults of any age!
We all need this one!.......2007-06-14
More than ever, our culture needs the wisdom of Dr. Seuss. Every child and adult needs to read this story. Perhaps when politicians and journalists are so casual about killing human embryos for spare parts, we'll remember that "a person's a person, no matter how small."
All Life Has Significance.......2007-04-11
Horton, you did it again. This is a wonderful book that illustrates how even the smallest (Who) can make a difference for his whole world and all the lives in it. It gives children and parents alike the encouragement they need to stand up and make a difference even if they are small and considered not to exist. Every voice counts in Who-ville.
As a grandmother, our kids loved the story, recognized the values and were able to verbalize them.
Dr. Seuss so artistically demonstrated how it takes ears to hear, and if those ears are dull then the whole world of little-ones need to call out together - "YOPP!" Please YOPP the distruction of life. May we all have ears to hear the voices of those who need our protection.
CLASSIC.......2007-04-07
THE ONLY THING THAT I CAN SAY IS THAT YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICES ON THESE BOOKS FROM AMAZON. THEY WERE MY FAVORITES AS A KID AND NOW I GET TO ENJOY THEM ALL OVER AGAIN WITH MY OWN CHILDREN.

It is scandalous that this book has not been reprinted. It is hugely expensive as a used item. Who will re-publish it?
Book Description
"About Time" serves as the definitive (albeit unofficial) guide to "Doctor Who" Seasons 12 to 17, the main bulk of the Tom Baker era. Written by Lawrence Miles (Faction Paradox) and Tat Wood (SFX, TV Zone), About Time not only examines the usual continuity concerns (alien races, etc.) in bursting detail, but looks at how the political / social issues of the 1970s affected the show's production. Essays in this volume include: "Where (and When) is Gallifrey?", "Why Couldn't the BBC Just Have Spent More Money?", "Why Does Earth Keep Getting Invaded?" and "'War of the Daleks': Should Anyone Believe a Word of It?"
Customer Reviews:
To Who It Definitely Concerns.......2006-08-10
"About Time" is the best work written so far about Doctor Who. It is incredibly thorough and somewhat witty, and shows connections that would have made James Burke blush.
Besides giving accurate continuity (which tries to be as objective as possible, unlike "Ahistory" or "The Discontinuity Guide"), "About Time" also offers where the ideas for the stories came from, arguments (both pro- and con-) about the merits of the show, and many, many anecdotes which are a lot of fun to read, as well as a plethora of gaffes and plot points that don't make sense (of which there are many in Doctor Who).
The big thing which is missing is of course a proper synopsis or summary of each story. However, it is more likely that if you have bought these books, you have already seen the stories several times over and just want to read more about them, so a summarization would be a waste of paper. (And if you have not seen Doctor Who, the book has no intention on convincing you to see it.)
This fourth volume covers the Tom Baker era from its inception all the way through the untransmitted story "Shada".
Much is said about the problems with and during production, about the ego clashes that were bound to take place, many of the conflicts with scriptwriters, producers and even occasional fanboys, and quite a few interesting tales about why certain stories work and why some do not.
And yes, there are some new anecdotes about Douglas Adams.
I very heartily recommend this book if you want a very intensive and enjoyable romp through the good old days of the mid to late 1970s and how Doctor Who managed to survive the changeover to "The show with the scarf-wearing, jelly baby eating, sonic screwdriving, robodog-owning, cavegirl's best friend", and having done that, to still keep its identity in the wake of increased competition with other, sometimes more sophisticated science fiction.
Those who do not wish to buy all six volumes will probably buy "The Discontinuity Guide" or perhaps something else, and will definitely miss out on a lot of gold here. (Always keep gold in mind in case of Cybermen.)
Now it really starts to get good..........2005-07-02
ABOUT TIME 4, the second (don't be fooled by the numbers, Mad Norwegian decided to start in the middle of the series because the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Doctors are the ones most known to viewers of the show, especially in America.) in Mad Norwegian's exhaustive series of guides to the televised adventures of Doctor Who, covers the bulk of the Tom Baker years; the period where the show was first noticed, for the most part, in America; the period with the classic team of producer Philip Hinchcliffe and, as I mentioned in my review of ABOUT TIME 3, my favorite Who writer, script editor Robert Holmes, and the time frame where Douglas Adams was script editor. To most casual fans then, this is the book that will mean most, because it's the Fourth Doctor's book; to myself, the ABOUT TIME series gets interesting because here is where the authors start disagreeing on what is good Who and what isn't, and more importantly actually state the differences. More on this later.
ABOUT TIME 4 details the first six years of Tom Baker's run on Doctor Who in the same sort of insane detail that ABOUT TIME 3 started. Each story is examined by the authors on every level imaginable, from the memorable moments, to the development of the main characters, to the continuity and history of the show, and to the monsters and aliens and other creatures that were staples of the show. Each story has a section about the most glaring of plot holes, continuity errors, or just plain wrong things about the story, as well as background history on what was going on behind the scenes during the filming of each story. The level of detail is mindboggling at times-as I said in my other review, Miles and Wood devote as much space to the Fourth Doctor as other guides do to the entire 26 years of the series run; if anything, perhaps they use too much detail, but one can hardly quibble about the authors spending that much care on a subject, rather than being lazy.
Of interest to many is the coverage of the time Douglas Adams spent on Doctor Who, first as the writer of THE PIRATE PLANET, then later as script editor of Season Seventeen. Fans of the Hitchhiker's Guide who aren't aware of this aspect of Adams' life will be interested in how much of the Guide turned up in Who, and vice versa.
To me though, the most interesting part is that where, in ABOUT TIME 3 the critiques of each story were mostly in agreement over the quality of said episode, as time goes by in ABOUT TIME 4, the critiques are broken down into a defense of the episode and a prosecution of it. It's interesting trying to guess if one author disagrees with the other, or if they're presenting both sides of a controversial story. Given what I know about Lawrence Miles, I would say the former, though I can't be certain; it is interesting though to see a guidebook give more than one opinion on a story, rather than following some sort of editorial party line (and it gets really good in ABOUT TIME 5, when the John Nathan-Turner era gets in full swing, but that's another review.)
ABOUT TIME 4 is an exhaustive, detailed, and moreover honest guide to some of the most crucial years of Doctor Who, and is highly recommended.

Hope and Healing Are at Hand
Extraordinary emotional pain cries out for something more than a Band-Aid, a pat on the shoulder, or a greeting card cliché. When the wounds go deep, real help, honest encouragement, and tangible healing may be hard to locate. But it is there to find, and the search is worth the effort. Compassionate and experienced counselors Dr. Steve Stephens and Pam Vredevelt, LPC, have walked alongside women in pain for yearsâthey’ve heard the stories, seen the tears, felt the pain, and entered into the devastation. They’ve also seen how wounded women can step out of darkness into hope, regain their feet, restart their lives, recover their energy, and even reclaim their joy. Real-life stories and proven, practical counsel serve as powerful tools to help you recover from past and present wounds, moving you into a new season of productive living.

Alice Gray, author of Treasures for Women Who Hope
Coauthor of The Worn Out Woman and The Walk Out Woman
Story Behind the Book
The authors are licensed therapists who see an enormous number of women struggling with the same basic issue: wounds that result from living in an imperfect world with imperfect people. âSome are great at hiding their wounds,â they say. âOthers are so overwhelmed by them that they are unable to recover and bounce back. We consistently meet women with incredible potential who are stuck in emotional pain. Unable to move forward, their wounds block them from becoming all they can be. We want to help them work through the process of letting go of this pain and progress in healing. The abundant life Jesus promises will be theirs!â

Powerful and Practical .......2006-02-08
Over the past several months, I have been going through a long, hard and often painful healing process. I have been deeply wounded in a lot of different ways. I still have a long way to go. I have been searching for a book that would offer both hope and practical help. I found what I was looking for when I picked up a copy of "The Wounded Woman" This book is jam packed with practical advice, piercing insights and real help. It doesn't offer a quick fix. But it does help you understand how different attitudes and actions can hinder the healing process. This book was very eye opening. It also hit a lot of nerves. Anyone who has been deeply wounded will not make it through this book without shedding more than a few tears. But feeling is a key part of the healing process. I would highly recommend this book to any woman who is struggling with these types of issues. This is one book you will want to read with a pen or highlighter handy. Read the book through slowly. Take time to digest what you read and when you get through it the first time, read it again. This book has been absolutely life-changing for me. It has taught me to so much. I feel certain it will do the same for anyone who reads it. If you are a woman and you are hurting and wounded. Do yourself a favor. Buy a copy of this book.

For Those Who Hurt.......2007-05-27
This is an excellent gift book, to give to people who are suffering the loss of loved ones, personal health, and other griefs of life. It is easily read, but the theology is sound and helpful.
For Those Who Hurt.......2007-01-10
Excellent book for anyone going through a loss or time of grief - from Christian perspective. Beautiful pictures and layout.
Solid biblical teaching on understanding suffering.......2006-01-31
I read this book 25 years ago, yet the truth rings the same today. I was very depressed at the time and didn't understand what was going on in my Christian life. How could I as a Christian be suffering with depression? Then I read this book, which used II Corithians 1:3-10 as it's basis, and found that the Apostle Paul stated he dispaired even of life. It states, how God is the God of all comfort. So if Paul the Apostle was dispairing of life and looked to the God of all comfort for help, then so should I. Dr. Swindoll goes into much greater detail, and does a very good job of driving the truth home. It helped me tremendously, know that God doesn't look down on us in our struggles, but has compassion. I highly recommend this book. I reference it in my suicide prevention website, (www.bungechord.com/suicide),and a link to purchase it, at Amazon.com of course. If you are stuggling with depression and/or in pain, this is a book for you.
Wonderful book.......2002-05-03
I love this book! I have given copies to many people I know when they are going through something difficult in their lives and I don't have the right words of comfort for them. This book helps to make sense of why we go through some of the things we do in life. I first read it 20 years ago and it helped me through a very difficult time in my life. Everyone should read this book!
One of the best books available on the subject.......1999-08-04
This book is (especially considering its brevity) one of the finest treatments of suffering available. It is sensitive, Biblical, and perfectly suited to pass on to anyone that is going through a difficult time. I highly recommend it.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
It felt like the author lived in my house.......2007-08-31
I left my husband after a year of marriage where everything was my fault. He would have these outbursts of rage, break things, call me names, humiliate me. I was always walking on egg shells and felt so completely confused because he would then cry and say he was sorry. The worst part was that he demanded I forgive him. Which he believes means I have to completely forget the event ever took place. After I left him, I shared with a friend who told me I was being abused. I had no idea. I found this book on Dr. James Dobson's website. As soon as I started reading it I finally had the diagnosis. I felt a lot of relief and complete sadness. During the separation I asked my husband to read it because I had hoped he would understand and get help. He refused to read it because he didn't want to be labeled. It's very sad. I was hoping God would do a miracle because I knew my husband did not like his outbursts. Unfortunately, Dr. Rinck was right when she said that most won't acknowledge and just move on. I was praying that we would be the 5% that would get help, but he moved on within 5 months and is now in a full-blown affair. After I confronted him, he said he would leave her if I came back. OUCH. Once again showed me where his heart is. I filed for divorce the next day. It sucks that this book is so accurate. It's painful to read about the demise of your marriage. But I know God's ways are not my ways. I do pray that there might be some victory stories from this book and that your husband loves you enough to read it and get help. If not, then my heart breaks for you, like it's been breaking for my marriage.
From a Dude, who learned from this book, thank God.......2006-08-03
I was a Type I kind of misogynist, very subtle but controlling husband, and I was horrified to realize I had this issue, lucky for my wife someone got her this book because of course, I was always "right" in our "christian couseling" and someone finally saw my lack of feelings, and all that junk and fingered me out, and when i realized what was going on, this subtle thing, I went to PROFESSIONAL counseling for quite a while and had to really "come out" of my shell and be a REAL man, this book was the begining, and a super life saver, that was 8 years into my marriage, now, 11 years later, on my 19th year of marriage I am the true man my wife always dreamed of an I like myself better too. I would say in this sad day where fathers are wimps and mohters are controlling (for good reason) that there is an epidemic and will continue to be an epidemic of young men who have no idea what real manhood is about and this book is before it's time, so sad to see, but if you search, the truth is out there, you gotta just really want it, this book provides some amazing truth, should be re-printed a zillion times for people.
A Wake Up Call .......2006-01-24
So many Christian wives believe they are not being abused. The women view the abuse as being taught a wifely lesson. The husband
will twist anything, the Bible or experiences from a men's groups meeting to justify his abuse of his wife.Christian
counselors can also extend the abuse when they tell a wife to
stay with the husband because "divorce is unBiblical"Now how
many times have we heard that?I can't count the times women have told me the councelor makes them feel guilty enough to
endure more physical and emotional pain. You see, pain as seen
as payment for sin.The sin being lack of submission and
surrendering of will to the husband.Among the men there will
even be a boys will be boys attitude and all sin from a man is
looked at as less serious than sin from a woman.Woman suffer from the extra sin of not being submissive enough.More marks
against the woman then the man.Another red alert are men who
view women as either saints or [prostitutes].Watch out for any strace
of this because the husband will limit a wife's sexual expression. Many women don't want to seem to interested in sex
for fear their husband will think of them as a [prostitute].Rinck
gives all great advice for getting out of an abusive relationship and to not feel guilty it you leave your husband.
Every Church Should Have On Their Shelf.......2004-12-04
Dr. Rinck has put together a wonderful book to help as a stepping stone for women who have been, or are currently caught in an abusive misogynist relationship.
Dr. Rinck's book, not only raises awareness, but educates and defines the misogynist relationship. For many women who marry religous men, feeling they will have a long lasting and loving marital relationship, only to later find their hopes, dreams and futures spinning in a downward nightmare, this book will be invaluable to them.
I applaud Zondervan Publishing Company for printing Dr. Rinck's book and reaching religous communities, who may have spurn the topic, had it been published by other secular companies. The Christian community has much to be grateful to Zondervan for providing material to enrich and guide the lives of many people.
Thank you both for the book.

Killng Me Softly with His Song.......2004-08-20
Roberta Flack once did a signature song that is surely to come to mind as soon as the reader picks up this book and finds many true stories spread among its pages. Not epic, but perhaps epidemic, it causes one to question if there should not be "self help and gripe" groups in every church and community to help those men, women and children cope with the harm that misogyny does, and how if manifests itself in people's lives. The authors should consider franchising the help groups since they surely would have the impact that the AAA form has had in the area of alcohol, and the conduct that arises from both personal and public acceptance of misogyny reaches far into most communities with no one to whom victims can turn. Unfortunatey, the emotional harm to self esteem and productivity that misogynistic behavior produces is not so soft, but has hard ramifications in society that last, often for lifetimes. This attempt to properly put misogynistic behavior and people in perspective is a must read for anyone experiencing it, and a should read for those who seek to understand what it is, and how it manifests itself in human relations. Not limited to spousal relations or to one gender alone, (since reverse discrimination can and does operate similarly for some men by women), it is a good review of tactics used by people haters who happen to fall into a narrow category of character - in this case, women.
Book Description
In the acclaimed Counterpoints series of books contrasting multiple views, this book explores four different models of church government--their history, foundations, and practical implications.
Customer Reviews:
Four views of church polity and the basis for each.......2004-12-28
One of the divisive matters in many churches today is the subject of church polity. In particular, what is the appropriate form of church government? In Who Runs the Church?: 4 Views on Church Government the editors compile the views of representatives of the four predominant types of church government. Just about every form of church government is some variation of one of these four. The four views discussed are Episcopalianism, Presbyterianism, Single-Elder Congregationalism, and Plural-Elder Congregationalism.
Arguing for Episcopalianism is Dr. Peter Toon, rector of Christ Church, Biddulph Moor, Diocese of Lichfield, in the Church of England. Arguing the position of Presbyterianism is Dr. L. Roy Taylor the clerk/coordinator of administration of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America. Presenting the position of Single-Elder Congregationalism is Dr. Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. And presenting the case for Plural-Elder Congregationalism is Samuel E. Waldron, Ph.D. candidate in systematic theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
A typical chapter starts with one of them presenting their position on their chosen form of church government and why it is the most appropriate one. This presentation is then followed by commentary by each of the people with differing views.
Each presents their case with passion and argues it well. If you want to understand why some churches choose one form of government or why others feel that position is wrong you will find excellent explanations in this book. Who Runs the Church? 4 Views on Church Government is highly recommended to anyone interested in this area.

Book Description
Fifteen years ago, this groundbreaking book provided new hope for those whose lives were devastated by moodswings and depression. Now, in this newly revised and updated edition, Dr. Ronald R. Fieve, the pioneer in the treatment of depression in America, offers an even brighter prognosis. Major advances in drug therapy have provided dramatic chemical "cures" that alleviate symptoms faster, more efficiently, and at a lower cost that ever before.
In this revised and expanded Moodswing, Dr. Fieve sheds new light on the causes and symptoms of specific mood disorders, including manic depression, seasonal depression, and PMS. Then, through case studies, he illustrates the effective use of the latest diagnostic methods and drug treatments. He also provides fascinating information on:
Why creative types are often prone to manic-depressive disorders--the results of a fifteen-year follow-up study.
How manic depression, alcoholism, and substance abuse go hand in hand.
How presidents, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights, and Wall Street wizards can benefit from "manic advantage," but crumble when their moods crash.
The revolutionary uses of one of psychiatry's greatest wonder drugs: lithium, as well as new material on the latest antidepressant drugs.
Why teenage and adult suicide is on the upswing and what friends and family can do to prevent it.
Why traditional psychoanalysis in the treatment of depression is, in many cases, no longer necessary.

Ups and downs.......2006-07-04
I love it, I hate it , I love it, I hate it, ... all right I love it!
Perhaps I need to be more serious, but if you are serious about taking bipolar disoder seriously then this is a good book to get you started.
My Life.......2006-03-02
I was diagnosed as Bipolar back when the disorder was called plain old Manic-Depression. I had known something was wrong for about three years, but the lows weren't all that bad, and with a loving wife and four wonderful children, working fifty hours a week, and attending college full time, the non-stop stretches of 22 hour days were certainly very helpful. When I got to the point of being suicidal, at the pleading of some dear friends I finally sought help and I was put on Lithium. My shrink suggested I read Moodswing, and as I read it is was like reading "this is your life." The author is brilliant.
This book is not an academic tome, the author does not get overly technical, and is easy to read and understand. If a statistic is off in some spot or the editing isn't perfect, that's life and it does not detract from the great value of this book. My point is simple - this is an excellent book for someone with bipolar disorder, or for someone with a loved one or family member who is bipolar, that is if they cares enough to try to understand.
While staying off of the bandwagon, I am writing this review to point out something specific. I took Lithium for eleven years, and found it to be very effective. The book details how Dr. Fieve went to great extremes to find someone to market Lithium, for which I am thankful. Why was there a problem getting it to market, since it is helpful in approximately 70% of the people who use it? Lithium is a mineral salt, and as such even though there were clinical trials before it was approved by the FDA, Dr. Fieve found it difficult finding a company to market it, since it is rather difficult getting a patent on a naturally occurring mineral salt. I am not what some would consider a "health nut," and I don't believe "they" are out to get us, whoever "they" may be. Also, I do not reject conventional western medicine, and this is not a slam against the FDA or the pharmaceutical companies, just an acknowledgement that there are naturally occurring substances in nature that can help with medical conditions, and that without the protection of a patent there lacks a degree of willingness to market a helpful product when protection and a large profit margin are lacking. I know first hand that there are other naturally occurring nutrients that can help with Depression or Manic-Depression, but that's another story.
Bottom line - this is a wonderful and helpful book. Enjoy life!
A classic - worth owning.......2002-04-15
This is a nice little book on bipolar illness that won't choke you to death with scientific terminology or bore you silly. It's cheap and it won't take you months to read. Make it part of your library! Dr. Fieve opened the door for many people to take control of their lives and their healing. There are newer and more technical books available, but this one it very good.
Understanding Bi-Polar Illness Begins with Reading Moodswing.......2000-05-08
When my mother's psychiatrist said, "Your mother is bipolar," I remember being dumbfounded and confused. Although I was vaguely familiar with the terms manic-depressive and bipolar (same disease) I didn't have any real understanding of the illness. The psychiatrist recommended that I read Moodswing, by Dr. Ronald Fieve. Immediately I bought a copy of the book - my hunger for the truth caused me to devour the book like a starving child - it was so well written and had such helpful information I consumed each page as if my life depended on it. To my amazement, I recognized my mother in almost every chapter, sometimes feeling as if Dr. Fieve was actually writing about her! Reading Moodswing gave me comfort and hope because my mother's erratic behavior suddenly had a name and a treatment. After reading Moodswing I understood, for the first time, why Mom behaves the way she does and what causes the "different" behavior. If you or someone you love is bipolar, you must read this book. It could save a life - it will most definitely change yours for the better.
I THINK THAT THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK ON MOOD DISORDERS........2000-03-30
It was published in 1997 so it isn't the most recent of books however it is a good resourse. I didn't find it to "techy" to read. Also it is so important to understand your illness that if you run across concepts or words that you aren't familier with it is really important to familierize yourself with them for your own knowledge. Knowledge is power in managing your own health (and your own healthcare)

Customer Reviews:
Great voices!.......2007-01-04
These stories are really well read! I play them in the car for my 4 and 3 year olds and I even enjoy listening along. I like that they don't have the page turn dings.
Wonderful for Early Readers.......2006-02-26
My son listens to these over and over with or without the book. He enjoys the narrators and has almost memorized the books.
Old favorites, familier voices........2005-08-21
The children enjoy hearing their favorite Dr. Suess read by the familiar voices we all know.
Absolutely Wonderful Readings!.......2004-04-19
As a homeschooling Mom of 2 small girls, we do A LOT of reading together. What a treat to have someone else do the reading for me every once in a while! Kelsey Grammer, John Lithgow, Walter Matthau, Ted Danson, Billy Crystal and other famous voices certainly do an OUTSTANDING job! The stories are unabridged, which makes it easy to follow along with your own Dr Seuss library. Between the talented author and the unquestionably talented actors, you just can't go wrong...what a great gift to any child or Dr. Seuss fan of any age! My daughters love this CD, and are always asking for one more story or the other disc. SO...we purchased the Green Eggs and Ham CD set today, and are very eager to see how it compares to this fun compilation!
