Book Description
Blending his riveting personal story with innovative ideas about how to win the war on terror, former marine turned Al Jazeera reporter Josh Rushing addresses all the issues he was not allowed to talk about when he was in uniform. If we are to win the war on terror, Rushing explains, we have to interact with the media at home and abroad in order to control the way we are perceived. By refusing to appear on Al Jazeera, Western leaders allow people who disagree with the current administration to represent the West to the Arab world in a skewed, negative way. By taking readers inside Al Jazeera, Rushing offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at the controversial news channel and shows how the West can harness it to its advantage, relay a positive message to the Arab public, and hear what it has to say in return.

Al Jazeera hires a Marine.......2007-09-15
Those who have seen the fine documentary "Control Room" will recall Josh Rushing: an attractive, earnest, young Marine officer struggling to tell the US side of the Iraq war to the enemy: Al Jazeera news. The documentary ruined his military career; he was called a traitor by his peers. So, in in the best American tradition he left the Marines and went to work for Al Jazeera -- doubtless making far more money than he did as a Marine -- and now instead of being a junior officer who serves coffee to Generals at Pentagon meetings he lectures them on the Arab world and media. Kinda gives you a warm feeling in your heart to see him triumph.
Now, Josh has written a book. It's a bit short on content -- for which reason it only gets 4 stars from me. You can skip though it in an hour. He tells the story of his marine career and his role in selling the Iraqi war. He was assigned to liase with Al Jazeera because nobody else wanted the job and he was the most junior officer around. He also tells of being ordered to go on the Web, identify himself as a Marine officer, and argue with anti-war posters -- apparently without any intimation at that time that the job of the military is to fight a war, not sell it or that he might come across as "Big Brother." (his words, not mine)
Part two of the book describes working at Al Jazeera and pleads for Americans to broaden their vision beyond biased American opinion and media and attempt to understand the Arabs and Muslims everywhere. Nothing he says could offend anybody except a super patriot. Rushing makes his case well.

Review of book and author.......2007-08-23
A must-read for anyone who thinks this war needs to be fought. Josh Rushings makes the critical case on how the war was sold to us and what we should be doing about it. A very well-written and honest book.
Great read!.......2007-08-23
An excellent book for anyone who thinks they understand Iraq, Al Jazeera or related topics. Lots of inside information on how things really work in a complicated part of our world.
great message, but not a great read.......2007-08-10
The other reviewers have all discussed Rushing's message, which is an important and timely one, and one that can speak to conservatives and liberals alike. The book itself, however, is not as good a vehicle for the message as it could have been-- it's disorganized, very repetitive, and, while Rushing produced it with the help of another author, its rambling nature often makes it feel as though it were transcribed from oral interviews rather than written. The first half is devoted to Rushing's autobiography, with fascinating insights into his experience at CentCom and in the Marines, and his initial encounters with Al-Jazeera. From there, however, he wanders into the history of Al-Jazeera, moving around in chronology, moving in and out of the story himself, and often returning to the same points several times. Important details are simply buried in the text-- the imprisonment of one Al-Jazeera reporter in Gitmo for the last several years without charges, for example, is relegated to a single paragraph-- while large amounts of space in widely separated areas of the book are devoted to describing scenes from the movie Control Room, an odd organizational decision. This eventually weakens parts of the argument; in particular, critiques of Al-Jazeera are scattered and responded to in passing (claims that they are fair and objective in one part of the book, for instance, sit oddly with his description of how manipulated an interview with him to make viewers perceive him as describing a bombing). What is frustrating is that what Rushing has to say IS interesting, and there is a compelling case in here for engaging with Al-Jazeera as a vital part of the Arab world, and for revising American attitudes toward Arab media (and the Arab world in general). The message is important; but I at least was left wishing the book itself had been organized in some way, either chronologically or by topic, had engaged with one point at a time rather than looping through them (occasionally contradicting itself as it went), and that a good editor had either grouped similar things together or had cut out some of the repetitions. Not a good read, but an important one.
If a former Marine can see the light, then there is hope for the rest........2007-07-16
It was an amazing shock to read a few years ago that Josh was joining Al-Jazeera. I saw him in the documentary "Control Room" where his face became so familiar to the Arab World. His arguments were typical of any American who did not have any clue on how the war on Iraq was a farce. So it was so comforting to know that he started to see the light. Best wishes to Josh.
Book Description
Al-Jazeera, the independent, all-Arab television news network based in Qatar, has emerged as a political player in the events following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, and the ensuing war being waged in Afghanistan. More than an agency reporting the news as it happens, Al-Jazeera (Arabic for "the island") has access to the Arab World and is "scooping" the western media conglomerates. It has emerged as a political actor on the world stage with its exclusive access to Osama Bin Laden and members of the Taliban. Its reputation is burnishing quickly through its daily exposure on CNN in the U.S., even as it strives to maintain its independence as an international free press news network.
The objective of this book is to shed light on the background of the Al-Jazeera network, how it started, how it operates, the kinds of programs it broadcasts, its effects on Arab viewers, the reactions of the West and Arab states, and its implications for the future of news broadcasting in the Middle East and its struggle for public opinion in the Arab world.
Customer Reviews:
It is not easy.......2006-10-19
Al Jazeera is giving us a vivid and moving picture of a New Arab World in the making. There is no way to go back in times. This media channel is succeeding to keep one step ahead of many others advancing, foreign or local, TVs.
Live transmissions are notably courageous in their way struggling so hard to persuade local (and influential) governments to let them work into the `heart' of the stories being anchored, against the background of petty local political bickering and futility.
It is not easy, but the beauty about it is that it is also challenging, and a source of pride to millions of Arabs
Very enlightening.......2003-01-25
Al-Jazeera is the all-Arabic TV news channel which burst on to the international scene in the wake of September 11 and the war in Afghanistan. Its unfettered access to that country during the war and its showing of the bin Laden tapes made it an automatic force on the world stage.Based in the Gulf state of Qatar, it came from the remnants of the BBC Arabic TV service. With the help of startup money from the Emir of Qatar, Al-Jazeera was to have complete editorial independence. In a part of the world where the press is usually government controlled, Al-Jazeera is not afraid to get specific and name names. At one time or another, it has been criticized or condemned by seemingly every government in the Arab world, for broadcasting things that the local government would prefer not be broadcast. Every local editorial of condemnation and every denial of press credentials to Al-Jazeera reporters just increases its audience all over the world by satellite. One of the things that Al-Jazeera is most known for is its talk shows, especially a nightly, two-hour show called The Opposite Direction. Two guests appear on the show, with totally opposite opinions on a certain issue, and with help from live phone calls, the sparks fly. Even by American TV standards, things get pretty loud and lively. Arab governments have noticed, and have begun imitating the format on their tame and boring government TV channels.Even though Al-Jazeera is an Arab TV channel, it has tried very hard to be impartial, hosting members of the Bush Administration, after September 11, and government officials from Israel. For those who want to decide for themselves if Al-Jazeera is a legitimate news broadcaster or a terrorist mouthpiece, this book is highly recommended. It's comprehensive, clearly written and is quite enlightening.
Raving Reviews Accurate.......2002-09-10
All the reviews I've read for this book have been unequivocally complimentary. One newspaper said it should be required reading for Bush's entire cabinet! Quite bold, but rightly so. After reading this book, I came to the realization that everything Al-Jazeera is courageous enough to air, my own country's media is petrified of. I wonder why our government is so afraid of a democratic Arab world? While the dozens of titles coming out on the Middle East are regurgitating the same history and concepts, this book is a refreshing new look at a MODERN Middle East, not a primitive and orientalized one.
A modern, independent, entirely Arab television news network.......2002-06-06
Collaboratively written by Egyptian born Middle East journalist Mohammed El-Nawawy and Middle East media expert Adel Iskandar, Al-Jazeera: How The Free Arab News Network Scooped The World And Changed The Middle East is a fascinating and informed history. This is a superbly presented account of Al-Jazeera, a modern, independent, entirely Arab television news network based in Qatar, which since the September 11 attacks, gained high profile prominence through daily exposure on CNN. This is also the compelling story of Al-Jazeera's struggle to keep its independence as an international news network, beholden to none. Overall, Al-Jazeera is an engaging, unique, detailed study of the origin of the Al-Jazeera network, its broadcasts, its effect on Arab viewers, and its struggle for a free press. Al-Jazeera is very highly recommended for Journalism Studies and Mideast Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.
Review from one of Al-Jazeera's audiences.......2002-05-12
This is a great book and I highly recommend it for everyone striving to know about the Arab media from an objective perspective. The book will inform you about the Arabs' struggle for freedom of speech through an unbiased Arab network that is not subject to the control of any government. The authors have succesfully portrayed the true picture of the Arab media scene through Arab eyes.

Book Description
This collection of essays addresses whether all nations will actively participate in building the information superhighway or whether the Internet will reflect global technological inequalities. The writings are grouped in four major sections, which examine theoretical issues on cyberglobalization, politics in the electronic global village, global economic issues in cyberspace, and national identities and grassroots movements in cyberspace. Contributing scholars represent a wide spectrum of disciplines from political science, economics, and communications to sociology, anthropology, and philosophy. A number of methodological and theoretical perspectives direct the writings. Collectively, the essays point toward an emerging technology that exhibits innate qualities characteristic of the classic notion of cultural imperialism. This edited collection, with its timely approach to the implications of the Internet for global relations, will appeal to communication, sociology, and political science scholars. The interdisciplinary approach will also attract students and educators from such fields as anthropology, philosophy and economics. To aid in further research, select bibliographies follow each essay.

Book Description
Written by a CNN correspondent, "The End of Revolution" takes readers all over the world, from the Amazon to Tibet, and dozens of places in between. It describes the crises that have made news in the world in ways that make real sense.
Customer Reviews:
A superb book.......2002-03-10
As a journalist witnessing the historic fall of the Soviet Union and the events shaping the New Era after the Cold War, Ghitis analizes with remarkable clarity the actions of the key players in the political world arena. She lashes out at the U.S. arrogance for proclaiming itself "the indispensable nation", but also recognizes that much in the world depends now on Washington and what it considers its national interests. Ghitis exposes the inhumanity of the movers and shakers for inaction in tragic places like Rwanda, Bosnia and Haiti. "The End of Revolution" covers the world at large having as a common thread the big issues like the global economy in the New Era. But Ghitis also reminds us constantly about the effects of the big events and the global economy on the poor of the world. Like the elderly woman begging Frida for help in the streets of Moscow... the same streets used by the "new Russian capitalists" to show off their shiny new BMWs... A superb book.
An Adventure of Mind and Soul.......2002-03-10
What an unbelievable voyage!
Ghitis took me on a guided tour of the world, showing me places I'd never seen. Making me care about what goes on, and showing me why it matters.
The world makes more sense after reading this book. It was an incredible adventure. Read this book.
Excellent and dead-on read!.......2002-03-03
This book provides the insight only a woman with Ghitis's experience could write. Great insights on the state of the world and the impact of mass media. A must read for journalists and travelers alike.
Relevant and Meaningful.......2002-01-04
Ms Ghitis tied together the seemingly unrelated events of the last twenty years and gave me a much broader perspective of recent history. I'd followed most of the news stories when they were current, but I lacked the ability to really comprehend any meaning behind them. Not only is it relevant and meaningful, but smart and funny.
Insightful and Thrilling -- Moscow, Tibet, Cuba...the World.......2001-12-11
I must agree with Wolf Blitzer's opinion of this book: What a treat! Reading the End of Revolution is like sitting down to talk with a fascinating journalist who has seen amazing events and can describe them and explain them in such a way that you are mesmerized and fascinated.
The author takes you all over the world, from the Amazon to Tibet, and dozens of places in between. It describes the crises that have made news in the world in ways that at last make real sense.
After years of watching CNN and others, this book gave me the perspective I had always hoped to find. The book explains our world while entertaining and offering insightful commentary and an unusual look behind the scenes at the world of television news. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
THE INTERNATIONAL WORLD OF ELECTRONIC MEDIA offers a fresh, contemporary look at electronic media systems around the world. Each chapter focuses on a specific country, from Saudi Arabia to Russia to Japan, and is written by an "expert"--who has lived, worked in and/or taught courses on the media in the country about which he or she writes. These chapter authors include such noted international communication scholars as Douglas Boyd and Joseph Straubhaar. The book follows a consistent structure throughout, making it particularly easy for students and instructors to compare and contrast key countries and their media systems. In addition, regional overviews, written by the book's editor, offer a broader perspective on each country discussed and how similar or different that country is from others in its geographical area.

You must understand the media inorder to live in the media.......2000-11-10
It goes into how the business uses the media for its own desires or the desires of its patrons. I even heard Dr. Baran himself lecutre about this too. His lecutres and his books ask you hard questions about how the business serve the democratic world in which we live in. The book doesn't favor any side, it telling you what to think about. The book is like a key that is opening the world to our media and how we chose to use it. This book is another item to have in the quest of understanding media.
