5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginners book.......2007-08-28

As a newby and complete beginner in TA, I found this to be a near perfect book for getting your feet wet. The style is simple and straight forward with large print and easy to read charts. While there are a few typos, I did not find the excessive amount stated in the reviews of his second edition. I found the CD to be as valuable as the book. It's one thing to read a book, but actually knowing the material is what counts if you are going to apply it to trading. The CD is in multiple choice quiz format. After choosing your answer, Pring tells you in audio, not text, if you got it right or wrong and why. This way you can see if you actually understand the principals before you start risking money. Think back to your college days- how much did you learn from classes you only audited compared with those that had exams!! I dont own Murphy's book, but apparently it lacks this feature. While there is plenty of free info on the internet now, I would rather know I'm getting it from a known expert in the field. Prings book is compact and concise and can easily be read in 8-12 hours, depending on your style. While I plan to buy Murphy's book as a more comprehensive reference (over 500 pages is alot of reading), another must-have book I found is Elder's "Trading for a Living" (a psychiatrist and trader), with its psychology of crowd theory, very true of the market and an excellent supplement to anyone's collection.

    4 out of 5 stars Useful information........2007-01-26

I am just getting started into the world of technical analysis and trading stocks. This book is really helping me to understand some of the things I have been observing in the market. The best thing about the CD is the quizes. The reader's voice can put you to sleep - especially if you read the chapters first - he covers the exact same text.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner.......2006-07-02

The book does not have a glossary in the back of the book so we can look up words that the author failed to tell us the meaning. I emailed the author and asked him what certain trading terms meant in his book and I received an email back from somebody named "Lisa" that told me to look it up in the dictionary if you can't find the answer in the book. I think this person "lisa" was very unprofessional in the way she handled this email and her customer service skills need improving. There are better books than this one. This man is from another country other than America and he uses weird words to describe his examples. It's hard to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction for the beginner or as a refresher........2005-12-29

Pring does an excellent job of providing the beginner with all of the basics of technical analysis (TA). I have traded stocks for over 15 years and have been trading the spot Forex market. I learned quite a bit about TA several years ago, but thought I would like to continue my education in this area. My only problem with this particular book/CD is that the CD presentation could/should have been more polished. However, the information is all there if you take the time to look, listen, AND USE it!

4 out of 5 stars View from the beginning trader.......2005-11-29

As a beginning trader I have no previous experience with which to determine the value of this book. But I'm glad that I purchased it. First off it is easy to understand and through some repetition it actually drives home the basic ideas. The CD-ROM could be a little more interactive, but having the quizzes included helps the process of self-learning. I'm sure the material can be found online, but to have it all in one book is wonderful. The basic concepts are probably academic to more sophisticated traders, but are easily applied (eg. I predicted the Intel pull-back in Aug 05 and correctly sold out my position). Whether you aspire to be a technician or a fundamentalist (Or if you're like me, you don't care) this book is a great place to start.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A resource for producers new and old.......2000-06-09

How helpful this book is depends on how "green" you are about the film industry. Those with little to no knowledge about film production will find the book resourceful, informative and very "to-the-point" about the different types of financing available. The advantage/disadvantage sections are especially concise--it's always good to see both sides when it comes to deals potentially worth millions. The "further reading" sections at the end of chapter are also handy, if you want to do extra research on your own.

For those who are experienced film producers (or even those who have finished rigorous film producing and/or entertainment business academic programs, such as myself), the information may repeat many things you already know. Many of the strategies in this book I've learned about in producing classes and film financing seminars--and I'm just starting my career. So I'm sure that some seasoned producers may think this book is reinventing the wheel. However, I did think that the sections dealing with the different securities and corporation options were very informative as far as how they impact your tax status, the difference between active and passive investors, how your autonomy as a filmmaker/producer may be affected, etc. It breaks down a lot of tax legalese into layman's terms.

Overall, I recommend the book--as a primer for new producers and students, and as a great reference guide to those with experience.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use and multiple learning methods.......2006-11-27

I used this textbook for a Macroecon class in college and it has got to be one of the best textbooks I've ever used. Not only is the textbook itself well written and easily explains complex theories, but it also comes with a DVD and online component. The online DiscoverEcon site gives you access to self-quizzes and further examples to help study. The DVD is basically lectures done in an easy to follow and entertaining (as entertaining as economics can be anyway) format.

I hope that my professor in my Microeconomics class uses the textbook from the same author.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid if you can.......2006-03-27

I think this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It uses 14 different sentences to say the same thing, and makes basic concepts seem complicated by overstating/analyzing them. This book could be significantly shorter...maybe the author was getting paid by the word?
If you have any choice of textbooks for macroeconomics class, I recommend you choose one other than this. If you're the professor of the class, I beg you to not make your students endure this book. :) Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Economics made interesting - how about that?.......2005-09-19

I've never before been interested in economics, so what do I know about econ text books? Not much. But I know a good text book when I use one, and this is a very good one. It is well written and easy to follow. It makes an otherwise dull subject both learnable and enjoyable. Yes, even interesting. It is also very up-to-date, with some very current examples that really resonate with the 21st Century Economics student. All in all - first rate!

    1 out of 5 stars terrible book.......2005-12-09

I think this book is terrible - it seems to be full of inconsistencies to me. When I was preparing for my lectures I felt like rewriting this book completely, or rather writing my own principals of micro book. Robert Frank's book is so much better, even though some would say that is an intermediate micro book. I am just emerging from my PhD program and planning to teach - this book is used by our department and I wonder why they use it and how come this book survived 6 editions? I am sure there should be a better book among hundreds of titles I can see. I can't believe all principal micro books are so bad and I don't believe that making it simple means making it inconsistent!

    5 out of 5 stars MAH-velous!.......2000-09-01

David Colander's Microeconomics is possibly the best introductory book to Microeconomics. He provides practical examples, as well as allows his own personal quirks and the like to show through, thus avoiding the monotony of traditional textbooks. Also contains color illustrations to help in the understanding (and the illustrations ARE helpful!).

    4 out of 5 stars its great.......2000-08-21

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to microeconomics.......2000-05-27

This is a great text for an intro to Microeconomics (I used this book when I was student). It was written clearly by stating the points that the author hopes you learn, followed by the reading and then exercises and problems to make sure the student understood the concepts from the chapter. The many graphs in this book make the concepts easy to understand and the fact that most of the graphs are in color helps out alot.

    Book Description

Herbert Zettl draws on his expertise and field experience to bring you the new edition of VIDEO BASICS, the handiest and most authoritative, current, and technically accurate student guide to video production. Meeting the need for a briefer book, this text distills comprehensive video instruction so that it can be covered in a single semester. The book moves students from video concepts and processes to production tools and techniques, and finally, to the production environment (studio and field, inside and outside) and its effects. A more conceptual framework leads the student from the idea (what to create) to the image (how to create) on video.

This book is a must for anyone getting into video production. Full of basic information that is conveyed in an intuitive and concise way, plus there is plenty of advanced knowledge to keep you referring back for years to come. Definitely a staple for all video people.

i am an electronic media communications major and this book has been used for a number of years in my school's communications program. video basics 3 has everything you need to know and everything is explained in much detail, yet not too complicated. there are great illustrations throughout the book that are very helpful as well.
i bought this book used from my campus bookstore and i gotta wonder, why would someone return this book at the end of the semester? i still have mine and have re-read it through quite a few times, most definately something worth holding on to!

    5 out of 5 stars Superlative.......2002-04-24

This book gives a broad overview of the field of video. It is intended as a textbook for students in a university video course, however, the information that it contains will be valuable for anyone interested in improving their video skills, especially in professional contexts. Since the book is a textbook, each chapter begins with a list of key terms and definitions, and key concepts are highlighted in the text and repeated at the end of the chapter. Each chapter also contains instructions for a lesson in Zettl's Video Lab on CD (not included). The book covers many topics related to professional video production, including the video production process, the video team, video cameras, lighting, sound, editing, and the studio. I found the language to be very straightforward and highly informative.

    1 out of 5 stars Bad Copies.......2002-01-30

      Book Description

Brad Schiller's text, The Microeconomy Today, 10/e, is noted for three great strengths: readability, policy orientation, and pedagogy. His accessible writing style engages students and brings some of the excitement of domestic and global economic news into the classroom. Schiller emphasizes how policymakers must choose between government intervention and market reliance to resolve the core issues of what, how, and for whom to produce. This strategic choice is highlighted throughout the full range of micro, macro, and international issues. Every chapter ends with a policy issue that emphasizes the markets vs. government dilemma. And Schiller packs his chapters with the facts of economic life—real stories and applications, not fables. This is a book that teaches economics in a relevant context with careful pedagogy. Schiller 10e is for students motivated by real-world policy issues who want to become economically literate. This is a book students actually READ. Schiller is also known for its cutting-edge and current coverage of today’s issues.

      Book Description

This completely updated second edition illustrates the mathematical concepts that a game programmer would need to develop a professional-quality 3D engine. Although the book is geared toward applications in game development, many of the topics appeal to general interests in 3D graphics. It starts at a fairly basic level in areas such as vector geometry and linear algebra, and then progresses to more advanced topics in 3D game programming such as illumination and visibility determination. Particular attention is given to derivations of key results, ensuring that the reader is not forced to endure gaps in the theory. The book assumes a working knowledge of trigonometry and calculus, but also includes sections that review the important tools used from these disciplines, such as trigonometric identities, differential equations, and Taylor series.

      5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2007-03-23

As a professional 3D graphics programmer, I can not stress enough the quality of this book. This book covers 3D math fundamentals, algorithms, and it is complete with easy to understand (!) proofs. The math is difficult because there is so many problems to be solved in 3D (and they draw from many different branches of mathematics), but it is written in such a clear way that every topic is made approachable. Unlike esoteric Ph. D papers, you aren't assumed to have any specific knowledge of math idioms or jargon. You simply need a decent grasp of college calculus and trigonometry to make the most of it. There are a few samples too to test your knowledge.

Expect to spend at least a solid year to really make the use of this book. Treat it as you would a two - three semester course in college. During this process, you'll find yourself occasionally wanting to get more practice and referring to a respective book on it.

If you could only own two books for 3D programming, buy this first and buy Ericson's book on collision detection next.

In summary, Eric Lengyel's attention to detail and mastery of 3D math / algorithms really shines and this book is an example of it.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-08

This book is great for anyone interested in computer graphics. Even for people who do not have a lot of math/graphics experience, this book starts you off with the basics of vectors and matrices and has exercises/solutions for each chapter. It saves you the time of looking through your old linear algebra and differential equation math books and contains the must know information you will use as a graphics programmer.

3 out of 5 stars Math majors rejoice.......2007-03-02

To be honest, while I find this book to be a decent reference, I find it to be pretty inaccessible in terms of sitting down and reading through it in an attempt to learn the concepts. As a non-math major (I'm actually an engineer and software developer) these math concepts are by no means beyond me. But rather than simply being presented with equation after equation, proof after proof, what I find a lot more valuable is more discussion on the usage of these equations. Specifically I'd like to see examples, diagrams, and code, and there is precious little of any of that in this book.

In other words, this book is very much like what you expect to find in a very dry upper devision college math text for the consumption of math majors who are used to such things. But for a non math major just trying to make use of these concepts in order to get the job done and make games? eh, not so much.

Still, I do think this book is useful as a reference when I want to look up an equation as there are a ton of them crammed into this book, but for me, I just don't find this book to be very good as a learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on the math needed for 3D games and graphics.......2006-11-27

This book illustrates the mathematics that a game programmer would need to develop a professional-quality 3D engine. Although the book is geared toward applications in game development, many of the topics appeal to general interests in 3D graphics. 5 out of 5 stars An Essential Source for Robust 3D Graphics Engine Design.......2004-11-21

I have not yet been able to purchase the second edition of this book. However, since it is a refinement of the first edition, I feel that I am somewhat competent to review this later version of Lengyel's text on this knowledge of the fundamental chapters which are included in both editions.

Definitely, the subject of 3D Computer Graphics draws programmers and gamers inward like a bug lamp draws insects inward. The ability to express one's own inspiring representation of the world seems to attract the deepest longings of the subcreative nature of the human person. However, the coder quickly realizes that the realization of this dream is extremely difficult due to the complexities of visualization in nature. Lengyel's text helps to break through many of these complexities.

In order to make sure that the reader is "up to speed" on the essentials in mathematics which are necessary for a 3D engine, Lengyel gives a quick, but thorough, review of Vector and Matrix operations. I was indeed impressed by the amount that he condensed into the beginning of the text. While this is far from a complete treatise on Linear Algebra, this material gives the reader the basics which will be necessary for all the other chapters. This is further augmented by his treatment of 3D geometry, its representations, and calculations relevant to it.
Using this, he treats on various subjects that are extremely important for making a lean, mean, and beautiful rendering machine.

His treatment of transformations gives the reader a base in this knowledge that is independent of the rendering context. This is an excellent approach because knowledge of how something works allows for one to use it more fully. He also goes further in introducing Quaternions and deriving rotations around any arbitrary axis.

The chapter on Ray Tracing gives the necessary background for the work done in the following chapter on illumination. While the latter is often implemented by the graphics environment that the coder is using, the full knowledge of this allows for further application in subjects such as bump mapping (which he treats) as well as reflective surface simulation.

Perhaps the most interesting and important subject covered in the text, however, is the chapter on visibility determination. Since this is critical to the speed of rendering, this topic is central to game engine design. Lengyel works through the various methods for bounding box construction as well as bounding spheres, ellipsoids, and cylinders and then explains how these can be tested against the view frustrum in order to determine if an object should even be rendered. Another chapter on various techniques which can be applied to polygons outlines procedures for reducing the complexity of meshes, without compromising quality.

The remaining chapters touch on collision detection, linear and rotational physics, and fluid simulation. These topics allow for the addion of various levels of realism to be added to 3D engines and are of importance once the rendering environment has been established. Furthermore, his appendices are a nice addition for those times when our memories fail to recall various facts.

And so, I give this book my definite approval. It is hard to come by a text so compact, yet thorough, on the foundations truly needed for 3D Graphics. These mathematical foundations allow for greater things to be explored and should interest any 3D programmer as well as individuals with a general interest in mathematics, especially in the applications of linear algebra and calculus.

      Book Description

From the writer acclaimed as "our hot link to the intricacies of cyberspace"--a wild ride to the outer limits of the virtual world, where real money meets fantasy gaming (Kit Reed, author of Weird Women, Wired Women)
Play Money explores a remarkable new phenomenon that's just beginning to enter public consciousness: MMORPGs, or Massively MultiPlayer Online Role-Playing Games, in which hundreds of thousands of players operate fantasy characters in virtual environments the size of continents. With city-sized populations of nearly full-time players, these games generate their own cultures, governments, and social systems and, inevitably, their own economies, which spill over into the real world.
The desire for virtual goods--magic swords, enchanted breastplates, and special, hard-to-get elixirs--has spawned a cottage industry of "virtual loot farmers": People who play the games just to obtain fantasy goods that they can sell in the real world. The best loot farmers can make between six figures a year and six figures a month.
Play Money is an extended walk on the weird side: a vivid snapshot of a subculture whose denizens were once the stuff of mere sociological spectacle but now--with computer gaming poised to eclipse all other entertainments in dollar volume, and with the lines between play and work, virtual and real increasingly blurred--look more and more like the future.

5 out of 5 stars Playing Video Games for MONEY -- REEL FUN!.......2007-04-24

What if you could spend your day playing video games and still make a fortune? Wll, now it's possible for the best of what is called the 'gold farmers' to play games and buy and sell fantasy goods in the virtual world and make between 6 and 7 figures a year! Yes, and this author Julian Dibbell did just that -- quit his day job as a writer and became a virtual mogul. Along the way in 12 chapters he looks at the virtual marketplace for virtual loot and the growing economy online in multiplayer online role playing gams MORPGS and Virtual worlds like SecondLife.com to buy and sell virtual real estate, avatars, islands, services and even real life objects in virtual stores. From Ultima Online to paying the IRS -- it's an amazing new world online and whether it's reel or real is still to be determined by the players in the newest game in town.

      5 out of 5 stars Serious Play.......2007-03-05

I read this book because I had begun to hear about the world it describes and wanted to learn more. I was REALLY happy with my purchase! Dibbell combines personal experience, interesting interviews, and a broad intellectual reach to make comprehensible the "brave" "new" world of massive multi-user gaming and the way it is making us rethink a variety of taken for granted forms of common sense.

The result is a lot of fun to read and highly educational at the same time.

2 out of 5 stars Pseudo-intellectual stuff ruins this book.......2007-03-04

I had high hopes for this book to be informative and fun but it turned out to be a disappointment. I am not sure if the author had to justify the scholastic grant he received for writing about the topic so he felt he had to interject the fun topic with a lot of pseudo-intellectual analogies/comparisons or personal reflections. Who cares if this game reminds anyone of the Turing Test, or if this is work or play? Everything is work to someone but play to another. His relentless (but failed) attempt to attach significance to this work just makes the book boring and haphazard. Whenever he writes about the intellectual meanings of this "phenomenon", his writing style changes -- a bunch of words that don't really mean anything...just string them together so they sound smart.

4 out of 5 stars Dibble Gets it Right - Both Play AND Money.......2007-01-25

My career is computing, and much of my free time and hobbies are taken up by the subject. So, perhaps predictably, I tend to enjoy reading literature about the topic. Computer gaming is a particular favorite of mine, and Julian Dibble's "Play Money" is a great exploration of how gaming is integrating into our society, and the impact they have on each other.

As other reviews have noted, Dibble tends to get a bit scholastic and philosophical in his treatment of the subject. And while I'm not opposed to adding a little intellectual depth to the coverage of the subject, I think he perhaps goes further than absolutely necessary - sometimes to the detriment of the readability of the text. However, readers who are able to slog through some of the slower bits towards the beginning of the book will find a thoughtful and personal (intimate, even) narrative. I found myself cheering Julian on, and empathizing with him - even identifying with him.

While not the best book of this genre (can this be called a genre?) that I've ever read, it was a competent discussion of the subject, and a quick, enjoyable read. It takes some real effort, and a labor of love to treat the topic of computer gaming with the seriousness it deserves, but not losing track of the joy that makes it what it is. Julian Dibble succeeds at it, and so I can easily recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Economic Study for Gamers.......2007-01-10

I don't play video games but I do work in finance and I couldn't put the book down. For young people into gaming, it effectively explains supply and demand. For those of us outside of the gaming world, it's a fascinating glimpse into it. Dibbell also illustrates and discloses the affects on his personal life.

4 out of 5 stars Went in a skeptic, came out a believer.......2003-06-20

Being a skeptic, I tested Mark's capsule exercises on a script I was preparing for the IFP Spotlight Award. The results were unnerving - I discovered buried treasure I didn't know I had within my story and eliminated an entire subplot that didn't service the STORY. Mark demystifies the concept of marketing, asking simple, direct questions. By asking "why would anyone want to see your film?" Mark goes past just marketing and addresses the issues that draw people to filmmaking in the first place. When I put the book down, I had a clear vision of the kind of filmmaker I want to be - and a great set of tools to get there.

5 out of 5 stars Helped sell my film.......2003-06-13

This book is so great! I got a copy after reading a review and it lived up to every claim. The techniques in the book's "Self-Distribution" section showed me how to set up regional sales for a film that otherwise has not made any money up until this point! I can now proudly say that my DVD is available in 17 video stores in Pennslyvania and New York thanks to the tips in this book! Get Bosko's book if you want to sell your film - it is that simple.

      5 out of 5 stars Must-Have Movie Marketing Magic.......2003-06-06

A lot of people throw the title "guru" around, but Bosko's the real deal. As a filmmaker, if you've ever wondered how to: get press coverage, create a media kit, find an attractive title; identify your movie's hooks, locate distributors, exploit the power of the web, get audiences and distribution and actually sell your movie or video...then GET THIS BOOK! Bosko "tells all" in an easy-to-read style that gets the creative juices flowing. No filmmaker should go anywhere near a camera without reading the hard-core, straight-up instruction and advice in this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute MUST!.......2003-05-15

Outstanding! Mark's style of writing is so engaging, down-to-earth, and motivating --I couldn't pull myself away! I've been behind the scenes on several film projects and can't believe they had the audacity to shoot without knowing what Mark shares in this book. My highlighter is nearly empty! When it comes to marketing a project, ignorance is certainly not bliss! Mark's book is an absolute MUST HAVE if you plan to DO something with your film other than show your parents!
