Book Description

"There's a treat in store for you all, as the new Justina Robson is out. Lila Black is a spy, and a bodyguard, and every so often she breaks into the sheer joy of the toys she carries within her. It's good to see that almost naïve geek love you see among born techies translated into a character so beautifully. The only truly bad thing about this book is that it isn't stand-alone and now I've got to wait until she's finished writing the next one, wanting much, much more." --Starburst (Five Star review)

The Quantum Bomb of 2015 changed everything. The fabric that kept the universe's different dimensions apart was torn and now, six years later, the people of earth exist in uneasy company with the inhabitants of, amongst others, the elfin, elemental, and demonic realms. Magic is real and can be even more dangerous than technology. Elves are exotic, erotic, dangerous, and really bored with the constant Lord of the Rings references. Elementals are a law unto themselves and demons are best left well to themselves.

Special agent Lila Black used to be pretty, but now she's not so sure. Her body is more than half restless carbon and metal alloy machinery, a machine she's barely in control of. It goes into combat mode, enough weapons for a small army springing from within itself, at the merest provocation. As for her heart, well, ever since being drawn into a game by the elfin rockstar Zal (lead singer of the No Shows), who she's been assigned to protect, she's not even sure she can trust that any more either.

1 out of 5 stars It's Chick lit. not cyberpunk.......2007-09-15

First off, this is not a cyberpunk novel. Indeed, it is quite the contrary: a chick lit. novel posing as a work of science fiction. Personally, I do not have a problem with chick lit.; but when a book is marketed as science fiction/cyberpunk, I want it to be cyberpunk.

Reading the back cover, I was intrigued; a combination of cyberpunk and Tolkien fantasy leaves open a lot of possibilities for a fun little story line. Unfortunately, Robson takes this interesting kernel of an idea and writes a Mary Jane story. I.e. the heroine has a disturbed past, thinks she is ugly (i.e. cyborg), has godly power (ridiculously so), and everything around her with male bits wants to shag her. It's an old and tired story line that has been put in a slightly different setting.

I wouldn't have been so upset if the writing was at least good. My impression is that Robson wanted to write a Chick lit. version of 'Snow Crash'. Sadly, her writing isn't as clever or as intriguing as Stephenson's was in that book. Really, all that is interesting is this core idea of sci-fi fused with fantasy constructs like elves, demons and whatnot as the setting. Robson pulls from this general construct any specifics she needs to move her chick lit. plot forward. I.e. deus ex machina is employed too frequently to even note here. The story reads like it was conceived as it was written with almost nothing in the way of a global coherence across the book. Indeed, some sub plots are left totally hanging with no apparent point in the overall scheme of things. This book could have shed a 100 pages and still been exactly as it is. Things that should have been elaborated upon weren't, and ideas that were trivial were drawn out.

I'll point out some specifics. We have this diplomat who gets turned into a one-of-a-kind cyborg NSA agent after being tortured to the point of death by elves. Ok, the cyborg bit is fine with me; but if I were the government WHY THE %*#! would I invest several billion dollars into making a cyborg out of a traumatized diplomat?! Why her? Why not some hardened soldier with SOME %*#!ING COMBAT TRAINING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STABILITY?! This makes absolutely no sense what so ever; i.e. her being a cyborg is JUST a plot device and nothing more. Yes, I can suspend disbelief like anyone else; but the story has to make sense within itself for it to hold weight in my mind. If there were some underlying reason why she was chosen to be THE ONLY ONE with this opportunity, I would say it was something more than a plot device. It isn't. So, even though ideas like this are left unexplained/unjustified; Robson has no problem betraying the fact that she has a fetish for elves. I.e. the story digresses to elf-cyborg porn in the final few pages. Sorry, if I wanted to read porn; I would have picked up a Romance novel. Her going down on the elf rock star added nothing to the story or characters; it's just porn in a 'cyberpunk' novel.

Anyway, those are just two examples; but you should get the idea of the writing going on here. I would not be nearly so harsh if this book was forthcoming about what it is: Chick lit. written by an author with a fetish for metal and elves. It's not cyberpunk. I'm sorry but a story about an insecure cyborg-goddess who can't understand that everything around her wants to score with her doesn't qualify as the construct of the cyberpunk anti-hero in my book. She's just too emo and Mary Jane to be a true cyberpunk heroine. The fact that she does so many idiotic things in the book doesn't help; Lilia (the cyborg) is a weak and stupid character with the ultimate goal of shagging the one person she's guarding. That is what the book is about; her getting the elf. The other ideas about her saving the elf kingdom, blah blah is secondary to getting the elf. The book doesn't end with her actually destroying the bad guy or accomplishing her missions; it ends when she gets to shag the elf.

Really a deceitfully-marketed and disappointing book. 'Keeping it Real' my #@!

5 out of 5 stars Justina Robson returns to form.......2007-08-29

In this kicky and splendidly written blend of sf and fantasy, Justina Robson returns to the form of her brilliant "Natural History." This time out she invents a world of fascist elves and predatory faeries. Demons also appear, and so do dungeons and dragons.

Unlike in her previous, and far less successful, novel "Living Next Door to the God of Love," here Ms. Robinson establishes the rules of her world in the introduction, and she sticks to them. Readers who need a refresher course when the plot thickens need only turn back to that introduction, and they'll be up to speed.

The author sets the scene in her opening paragraphs of that introduction: in 2015 an explosion at a "superconducting supercollider" (gotta love it!) has torn a hole in the fabric of space time, which has in turn opened the paths to other realms. Old Earth, now known as Otopia, is visited by fantasy creatures, and trade routes have been established between the realms.

Lila Black, a semi-cyborg government agent (she's been rehabbed with cybernetic and mechanical add-ons after a previous caper), is assigned to duty as bodyguard for Zal, an Elf who's the lead singer of the Rock Band "The No Shows." His own people are trying to kill him. Our guys want to learn why the elven land (Alfheim) has closed its borders, and use the threats against Zal's life to bring Lila in.

The action starts quickly and builds to a fine, logical conclusion. Along the way the author has fun (you'll probably laugh in places) with fantasy conventions--she stretches them to the limits without breaking them--and she has a great time contrasting the flowery speech of the Elves' leader, Arie, with Lisa's street-gal patter.

Ms. Robson also has some fun with gender, too. The proactive female bodyguard falls (with the aid of some magic) for the relatively passive male diva (divo?) Their scenes together are hot--great fun.

The book (handsomely designed large-sized paperback on good paper) is billed as "Quantum Gravity, Book 1," but it's complete in itself. It won't leave you hanging from a cliff, but you'll probably be anxious for the followup, which is to be called "Selling Out."

3 out of 5 stars Like Candy.......2007-08-07

There's no denying that Keeping it Real is a fun book-- whether because of or despite the odd amalgamation of cyborg and fairy fiction, Robson presents an entertaining adventure. But I was never fully able to sink my teeth into frothy confection and I was left hungry for something more. It's not a bad book by any means, but it didn't pull me in enough to want to read its followups.

this is quite possibly the most fun you can have with an object made of paper and ink. ever. do it.

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-08-01

Cyborging bodyguard girl gets to blow up the odd elf while protecting the only rockstar said pretty boys have managed to produce.

This is basically an urban fantasy, so fans of that sort of thing with the female arse-kicker dealing with (and shagging) the pretty boy supernatural should like this. Or, for basic SF fans, this is very SF light. Just a light adventure romance, really.

Maybe, Kim Harrison meets Shadowrun with a small touch of Ghost in the Shell, for a bit of the manga feel. That is, it is not slow, dull, or overly girlie, so a definite plus from that point of view, and a goodly amount of action, whether, shooting, spells, or whatever.

A big Quantum accident gives access to supernatural realms, Elves, who are scammer scumbag nancy-boy magic types who can't rock, demons, elementals, and the dead realm, which is necromancer (brave ones) only.

So, of course, the human bodyguard with the tech stuff gets involved in something more complicated, inter and intrarealm politics and espionage with a side dish of assassination.

I'd call this a 3.25 I think.

Book Description

Even when life is hectic and harried, every woman has a God-given longing for relationship, and her female friends play an important role in filling that. Oliver and Smalley help women distinguish between self-centered, insecure, childish relationships and other-centered, healthy, "grown-up" relationships. Using personal anecdotes and scriptural principles, they explain ten characteristics of a grown-up friend and offer ideas on how readers can develop these attributes in themselves. Finally, they tackle the tough issues of friendships, such as how to support a friend in crisis, how to work toward forgiveness when a friend has injured you, and how to determine when it is best to let a friendship go.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for sisters, friends, and moms.......2007-07-01

I found this book extrememly helpful as I walk through my "grown up" friendships. This book offers not only concrete ways of being a better friend, but also how to move on from those friendships that are damaging. I appreciated the real stories from both women on their journeys through healthy and unhealthy friendships. I felt like they really said what we as Christian women think, but don't always have the guts to say or do. It really challenged me to look at friendship in a more mature manner. This book would make a great gift for those women close to to you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for your girlfriends.......2007-05-07

1 out of 5 stars DID NOT LIKE BOOK!.......2007-05-07

I was very excited to see the title of this book as an adult I think we all struggle with friendships from time to time. The concept of the book could have been great, however most of the time I felt like the author's were preaching about God. Every other sentence is about God and quotes from the bible. I am a spiritual person but I bought this book to learn about the value of a friendships not how I can incorporate God more into my life. Waste of money!

5 out of 5 stars The PERFECT book to give to your girlfriends!!.......2007-05-05

I absolutely LOVED this book!! Erin Smalley and Carrie Oliver have done an amazing job explaining the different kinds of friendships that women have and how we handle each friendship. I appreciate the fact that they both have shared some very personal stories about both healthy and failed friendships in their lives. I enjoyed this book so much that I have ordered a few more to give to my closest girlfriends. If you have ever been hurt or struggled through a broken friendship, you have got to read this book! It will help you view your friendships differently and possibly bring some healing. It did for me, anyway. It will also make you value and treasure your closest friends all the more. You won't regret purchasing this book. :)

5 out of 5 stars First real-estate investing book with a humble, realistic perspective.......2007-09-27

I've read and reviewed a number of "how to make millions investing in real estate" type of books, and I didn't think I'd ever need to read another one, since they are mostly the same (in varying degrees of quality). However, I was attracted to the Part-Time Real Estate Investor precisely because of the humility of its title -- it seeks to help real people achieve real income from real estate while keeping their feet planted solidly on the ground. Since I know the realities of the current real-estate market precludes the possibility of doing it full time (at least from my starting position), I decided to take a gamble on this book, and I wasn't disappointed.

As with any "how-to" real-estate investment book, the Part-Time Real Estate Investor covers a lot of ground, and thus is skimpy on the details in some areas. Fortunately though, this book focuses on some areas that are ignored by the pie-in-the-sky type of investment books. For example, it spends ample time on subjects like "Buying Your First Home," buying a home with bad credit, "Land Contract and Lease Purchases," etc. The bad credit chapter was particularly informative, I thought, as it examines whether or not you should buy a home with below-average credit, given the higher interest rates you'll incur. Most books are simply rah-rah for homebuying (and selling), but this one is more sensitive to individual's situations.

There is no ONE book that will tell you everything you need to know about being a real-estate investor, but this one is a good place to start, particularly for people with realistic and modest goals. Others, like those from the Rich Dad series or by author William Bronchick, are also helpful, especially from a psychological perspective. But this book contains some of the best pure information of any I've read. I would advise others in my shoes to grab this book as well as two others I recently reviewed, Inspect Before You Buy (by Charlie Rose) and Your Real Estate Closing Explained Simply (by Michelle Blain), which go into those two areas in greater depth than this book is able to. No ONE book will teach you all you need to know, but these three books as a set come pretty close!

5 out of 5 stars Real estate investing using common sense!.......2007-09-26

I found it an incredibly hard book to put down. The author offers a solid, common sense approach to investing in real estate. Essentially blows away the get rich quick schemes touted by many popular real estate investment books and seminars today. The author discussed at length, the many different types of real estate investing and what works better given certain situations. He also listed types of contacts to make and how to get investments leads. The information provided gave sound advice that was realistic in scope and ideas. The case studies and bonus tips sprinkled throughout the book add an extra measure of "you-can-do-it-too."

Even includes an exhaustive glossary listing of real estate and investment need-to-know terminology and definitions. This is definitely a very informative and necessary book to read before and while embarking on the journey of real estate investment. Avoid the pricy seminars and read this book first.

4 out of 5 stars Great product!.......2007-08-14

I found this book very easy to read and very informative. It made no "get rich quick" promises while presenting the methods that can be used to do so. I will likely read it again soon.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas and info!.......2007-03-21

With this book, Dan Blacharski has done a terrific job of de-mystifying the world of real estate "flipping" and investment strategies. An easy read, his nearly 300 page manuscript is chock full of useful tips for the first time investor. The glossary of real estate terms in the back of the book is not only helpful, but necessary in order to navigate the often tricky world of realty contracts and laws.

Mr. Blancharski shows how an initial investment of only $10,000 can pay off in millions in the long term, and how it's possible to invest without any seed money at all. At the same time he warns about how over-extending yourself can lead to financial disaster, especially for those who want to "get rich quick".

I can't wait for my husband and I to buy our first property.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, full of exellent information.......2007-03-20

With only knowing the very basics of real estate and being interested in learning more about "flipping" houses, this book was wonderful. Dan covers everything from figuring out how to handle all the paperwork to each step of the process from looking for houses, to selling or renting them.

Dan covers the whole process in great detail focusing on almost every possible situation and telling you how to use it to your advantage or how to get out of a tough spot. He gives plenty of resources and examples by using other's stories as well as his own experiences. He uses these to explain the important points of investing in real estate and to make sure that the reader understands the real estate and banking lingo.

I borrowed this book from a friend, now I will definitely have to go out and get a copy for myself. This book would be great for people of all ages and financial status. He has a way to "dummy down" all the fancy terms and phrases and puts them in a light where anyone can understand them. He also covers all sorts of options to cover any situation no matter the financial status. I think the thing I liked the most besides all the info in a format that is easy to understand and access is that he tells you the truth. When you should and should not use a certain strategy, he doesn't sugar coat anything at all like most sales people do.

Book Description

Blending kitchen table wisdom and her own experience in losing her sister to gastric bypass surgery, author Robyn McGee explores the historical and cultural roots of obesity among black women, offering practical guidelines to weight loss and living a more healthy and balanced life.
Though she advocates a slow and steady approach to weight loss under a doctor’s supervision and a commitment to exercise, healthy eating, support groups, and therapy, she also understands that many black women, like her sister, will still choose the option of gastric bypass surgery despite the fact that 1 in 200 patients die from the surgeries.
McGee argues that a range of factors often lead to obesity in black women, including the problem of fat acceptance in the black community, historically negative images of black women, compulsive bingeing and purging, childhood sexual abuse, and a lack of attention to black women in the medical community.
With the memory of her sister’s lifelong struggle with weight firmly in mind, McGee conveys to readers the importance of honoring themselves by making healthy choices, starting slow and being patient, seeking help when they need it, and finally, remembering that they are much more than a number on a scale.

5 out of 5 stars Informative!.......2006-11-10

Hungry for More serves as a guide to help African American women make informed choices when deciding to loose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. Robyn gives us a reality check when she tells us about her sister, Cathy, who underwent gastric bypass surgery, but died when her heart was not strong enough to handle this type of quick weight-loss surgery. The book is chock full of medical facts and plenty of resources and references. There is a very informative discussion on obesity in minorities and raising obese children that really makes you think about the issues. The book also has many personal stories from people Robyn interviewed. Obese women must realize that the weight did not go on overnight and cannot be removed over night. Robyn advocates loosing weight slowly and exercising, while changing eating habits and behavioral modification. Most of the information is what we have heard before--it just needs to sink in. I especially enjoyed "Rob's Recommendations" at the end of each chapter. When it comes to loosing weight, Robyn definitely wants us to keep it real!

5 out of 5 stars hungry for more.......2006-08-26

All I can say is wow, wow, wow. I just finished Hungry. You spoke to a problem that is huge, no pun intended. Unfortunately we, as a society, focus on the outside manifestation of the inside pain.

One in four women are sexually abused or traumatized, or currently in an unsafe relationship. Health care providers who themselves have not dealt with their own issues can make the problem worse.

If there is no understanding of self, it's hard to promote self care for patients. I appreciate working in the atmosphere I work in at the Health Department where I don't have to rush with my patients. It's always interesting what is revealed behind closed doors. I will be recommending your book as reading for some of my patients. Even if weight is not an issue, love and acceptance of self usually is for most women. It's an on going daily process. Keep spreading the information and take care of yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A Sista Keeps It Real.......2006-03-02

Wow! I really enjoyed reading this book. It is wonderful! Having gone from chubby to obese more than once, I was particularly interested in how this author would handle the subject and to her credit she never hit a false or patronizing note. The advice was solid but never condescending. What I particularly liked was the fact that there was no "one size fits all" reason for being fat, overweight, obese etc. It is my personal belief that with most people it involves a varying combination of factors with each person having their own particular mix. Ms. McGee delineated each "reason" with skill, knowledge and compassion and gave excellent advice as to where to go to get help and counsel. Plus it's a good read to boot! Any way it got me to thinking about some long overdue changes that I needed to make personally and after hemming and hawing mightily, I have lost 15lbs. It's a good start.. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!!!.......2006-01-06

I just couldn't put this book down! From start to finish, this book is captivating, informative, and also entertaining. It reveals the weight-loss struggles that many ethnic women of today are faced with and what we can do to overcome them and love ourselves and our bodies without having to seek many drastic and often fatal measures. Any and all women can benefit from reading this work of genius!

4 out of 5 stars Love yourself.......2005-12-31

Robyn McGee's HUNGRY FOR MORE is a guide to help African-American women make informed choices when deciding to live healthy and lose weight. Ms. McGee's book begins by telling readers about her sister, Cathy, who underwent gastric bypass surgery, but whose heart wasn't strong enough for this type of surgery and she died trying to find a quick and surefire method to lose weight. Cathy is one of many African-American women who are opting to have gastric bypass after many years of yo-yo dieting and trying everything imaginable to lose weight. Ms. McGee advocates losing weight in a slow manner with changes in eating habits, behavioral modification and exercise. She wants to give African-American women and women of color options for long-term weight loss and this book is a testament for her sister.

With nine chapters, an introduction, forward and afterword, the author covers many phases on living healthy and weight loss. In Chapter Two, "From the Motherland to Mickey D's", discusses how African-Americans have gradually become obese over time, especially in a culture of sedentary life. Chapter Four, "Digging Our Graves With Our Forks", examines the ways depression, racism and sexual abuse have contributed to obesity and how important dealing with these issues can change the continuum. And the final chapter, "Generation Triple XL", looks at the overweight problems of African-American children. Although I only highlighted a few of the chapters, this book has a wealth of usable information.

HUNGRY FOR MORE is informative and gives us the history of obesity in the African-American community as well as statistical information to validate the author's findings. With several case studies, she is able to convey her information from an individual and emotional standpoint. She makes her findings easily relatable and the options are fully explained. She also includes other reading materials to review as well as movies that feature each topic she explains in her book. One message made very clear in this book is that readers must learn to love themselves and they are more than just a number on a scale. Even if you choose or gastric bypass is your only option, this book gives you enough information for you to research this surgery so you know enough to ask the right questions and make an educated and informed decision. However, she offers so much more in ways of losing and maintaining weight loss that can easily be incorporated into anyone's lifestyle, if that is what he or she wants to do.

3 out of 5 stars Not insightful.......2007-05-24

This a book that's not terribly insightful about CRM. It's a broad brush overview of commercial applications in the space and some conventional wisdom. Found it to have much repetitious pedantic pages. Wished that there were more discussion on business process and best practices.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-05-14

Great resource! Filled with lots of statistics for CRM industry and great insite into the challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Reading - even for small business crm interest.......2003-11-04

This is an excellent book for those interested in understanding the strategy behind CRM.

5 out of 5 stars Great tehnology review.......2003-06-14

This is the bible for defining what CRM is, and is not, as well as categorizing all the technology offerings and giving good advice as to how to choose the right technology. I also read "CRM For The Common Man" by Russ Lombardo and thought it was a great precursor to CRM at the Speed of Light. CRM For The Common Man describes how to plan your CRM strategy up front, while Greenberg's book takes you to the next steps involving the technology. A great pair.

5 out of 5 stars What a great education!.......2002-03-15

This book was truly one of the greatest educational books I've read. Whether it was intended for this or not, I don't know but what a great business overview of what CRM is as a whole. Paul's ability to simplify and his great sense of humour makes this book easy to read, easy to understand and was actually one of the most fun and informative books I've read in awhile. If your looking for a great understanding of CRM with a book that is hard to put down, this is the one. I can't wait for his second edition!

5 out of 5 stars Young people should read all of Moesha's books........1998-04-06

People who love to read should read all of Moesha's books, and people who are in relationships could take hold of this book as well. It gives you tips on what to do and not to do in a relationship. Ex. Writing a nasty letter to your boyfriend, and sending it E-mail. That could cost you your man and friend at the same time. Don't do it unless you want your heart broken into lots of pieces all over again. I really enjoyed reading this book over and over again. Please send me some more of the Moesha books to read and enjoy. I love to read and could read the whole day away. Stefaine, keep on writing books. It is something that you will sore in as the years go by.

      5 out of 5 stars Adorable!!!.......1998-01-12

I loved it! I see that this is a very realistic series. I enjoyed this book big time! How Moesha starts believing the rumors about her Q, but really he's secretly writing her a song called "Shorty". It is so cute!!!!!! Read it, enjoy it! I did!

          Book Description

Beware the Weighty Curse of Campus Life!

Congratulations—you’ve just started college, and it’s an exciting time. New friends, no curfew—and the freedom to eat what you want, when you want it. But watch out! These newfound freedoms can lead to the notorious weight gain known as the “freshman fifteen”—the all-too-common rite of passage that adds up to an average weight gain of fifteen pounds for your first semester. You do the math: That’s almost a pound a week! Chances are, if you’re not aware of the temptations of campus life (late-night pizza, all-you-can-eat choices in the cafeteria—not to mention weekend parties and exam stress), then you’ll come home for Thanksgiving wondering how you ever fit into your senior prom dress.

But as they say, “Knowledge is power,” and Fighting the Freshman Fifteen should be your first required reading. Written by a leading dietitian, along with two college-age women who have battled the “fifteen” themselves, this easy-to-ace guide will arm you with the information you need to make intelligent nutritional and lifestyle choices, including:

          • Tips on using the cafeteria wisely • Getting real about portion sizes and calorie intake • Handling midnight study sessions (and other excuses for ordering pepperoni pizza) • Managing PMS, stress, and emotional reasons for bingeing • The lowdown on “liquid calories” and other dieting dangers • Finding the time for fitness • Fifty easy, no-mess recipes that can be prepared in any dorm room

Complete with handy checklists and charts that will help you stay on track, this is an essential course that every college woman should take. The objective? It will help you look terrific, while giving you more energy to keep you at the top of your game.
