Book Description

Junior would like to get a few things off his chest. He does not know how to write a book. (Except [maybe] for this one.) He does not like books with introductions. (So this book has six of them.) His therapist says he has issues with closure. (Granted, this book has seven endings.) This is not a novel. (Everything in it is entirely true - except for the large portions that are completely fictional.) And finally, Junior has no issues with his father. (Nope, really, not a single one.) In a dizzying kaleidoscope of words and images, actor and writer Macaulay Culkin takes readers on a twisted tour to the darkest corners of his fertile imagination. Part memoir, part rant, part comedic tour de force, Junior is full of the hard-won wisdom of Culkin's quest to come to terms with the awesome pressures of childhood mega-stardom and family dysfunction. He understands that "having fun and being happy are two totally different things," yet at the same time he warns, "the end of the world is coming - and Im going to have unfinished business." Searingly honest and brain- teasingly inventive, Junior is breathtaking proof that Culkin has found his own utterly original voice.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Minute.......2007-06-27

I couldn't put this book down. Yes, I'll admitt I've been intrigued and cheering on Macaulay Culkin since I was 10. I'm now 26. My husband says I'm biased. However, I think it teaches all of us that celebrities, "Child Star's" are just like everyone else. They fall in love, get arrested, pick up bad habits, and watch too much T.V. I found this book so refreshing and honest. It allowed me inside the world of someone I thought I knew. I feel like a stronger person for having read this book.

5 out of 5 stars CULKIN OFFERS A FRESH LOOK AT WHAT IS A BOOK.......2007-04-30

Culkin offers a fresh look at what is a novel- hats off to the author. When the Generation Xer anthologies came out, I loved them for their short stories and off-avenues; Culkin's book is so reminiscent of this style. Hard thought not necessary and should you have any issues keeping your attention on-stream for any length of time, this book pulls you in and keeps you. Love it, read it, and keep it. Macaulay has issues with his father....

1 out of 5 stars I'm so glad I didn't spend full price for this book!.......2007-04-20

I'll give it credit in that it is original, but I'm sorry I wasted the hour-and-a-half it took me to read through it!

1 out of 5 stars Disapointing.......2007-04-14

This book contains lots of profanity. Seems like it was written like foolish doodling on a computer and was published that way. It is original; but my opinion is that only is 10% worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Something Different.......2007-01-10

Different. Unique. Inspiring. Those are the three words I use to describe Junior. Yes it is different in that there is really no structure, yes it is Unique due to its lack of plot or storyline, but yet it is very Inspiring in that he allows you to get a glimpse into one of America's greatest child actors and the problems he faced and I'm sure many actors faced growing up in front of the camera. In writing Junior, Culkin truly opened himself up to readers and into his life of chaos, loneliness, and tribulation, but I believe it made him a stronger and better person. I admire him much more now than I ever could have before, because in him many of us have gone through the same issues of being lost, being abused, and somewhat left out of living normal lives. I thought the mix of drawings, poems, and short stories very really cool and showed a different view of what writing can be. Writing can be anything a writer chooses it to be, there are no rules and there shouldn't be, and Culkin proved that very well in Junior. As a college student I admire Culkin for writing such a deep book on his life as a younger person still lost and constantly trying to find himself.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining & revealing.......2007-02-22

Like with most public figures, reading about the growth path of this talented star was enjoyable. Written by her brother, a public figure himself, was well done and informative. The perspective is unique and comes across as "telling it like it was".

3 out of 5 stars sibling rivalties.......2006-06-03

Like most people, i initially thought, "oh great, i want to read about jodie, but this guy's going to spend most of the book talking about himself." the irony is, as the book went on, i realized, his life seemed a lot more interesting than hers, and if anything, i wanted to know more about his life. Jodie's life seems more cut and dry, boring, and conservative.
The first half of the book is interesting as it details how much resentment buddy holds for his mother, and colours in what we dont know about jodie's upbringing. The 2nd half of the book was slower going as it was clear buddy didnt have much interaction with his sister since the late 70's, and most of the information is filler gleaned from interviews.
I spent a lot of the book thinking, man, this guy does seem to love his family, and he did seem to go out of his way to be fair and honest, but boy oh boy, for a who wants his family to be closer together, you gotta figure this book just might blow it further apart than ever.

3 out of 5 stars a brother loves his sister.......2003-02-15

Well, Buddy Foster may or may not have written this book for the $$, but after reading it, despite the fact that he probably made his sister really mad at him for disclosing all the family foibles, secrets, etc., it so so apparent that this is a brother who geniunely loves his sister. I like seeing that. As a baby sister myself, I know how terrific it feels for your siblings to adore you. It's a sweet deal. I hope that by now (what is it? five years later; today is 2/14/03), Jodie fully realizes that and has forgiven Buddy. He seems like a pretty nice fellow despite his admitted faults.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2002-10-05

i thought the book was pretty good. i agree with what someone said earlier. we want to hear about jodie not about buddy and all of his complaints, but i thought he did a pretty good job. jodie seems like such an interesting person. its funny b/c everytime i see her, even in her recent movies, she will make some facial expression and it will remind me of freaky friday. i love that movie. anyway, this is the only "jodie" book that i have read but i'm reading another one so i'll have something to compare it to. i wish that she would write and autobiography. that would be cool.

5 out of 5 stars Far better than what the first two reviews say.......2002-03-08

I read this book, and I read "The Royals" by Kitty Kelly. There is all the difference in the world between the two books. The first is an unpleasant book written by an unpleasant woman, which uses second and third hand gossip who has nothing but contempt for its subject matter. "Foster Child," on the other hand, has a great deal of respect for the woman at its core, which does not stop it from dwelling on her weaknesses, as any good biography should.

Those familiar with what is known about Jodie Foster will find few real surprises. It is generally known, for instance, that she is frightenly intelligent; and that she has, with one or two exceptions, never acted in or directed a movie she didn't really want to do, but once committed devotes herself wholeheartedly. It also been surmised that in terms of a love life, she looks at the person and not the gender; a common trait with highly educated, irreligious people. That she is understandably guarded with her privacy, that she does not suffer fools gladly, or that she has something of a cold streak personally, do not come as a surprise either. All of these are elaborated on in this book.

What is particularly germaine in the book is Buddy's revelations of the Foster family, a high strung, tumultuous family if there ever was one. Speaking first hand, we have his account of the wars between the ambitious mother of the Foster brood, Brandy, and their USAF officer father Lucius. They divorced while Brandy was pregnant with Jodie, but they had several break-and-smash reunions afterward.

Buddy's respect for his sister particularly shines in the analysis he gives her movies, notably her directorial efforts "Little Man Tate" and "Home for the Holidays." He comes out understanding the latter film better than most of the critics did.

While reading this, I could feel the disapproving eyes of Ms. Foster over my shoulder, and I'm sure Buddy is to this day subject to his sister's shunning. I'm sure, as well, that the onetime Mayberry actor wrote the book for some needed money. (Buddy fesses up well to his own professional and personal failings.) But the resultant book is by no means a tabloid effort, and due to it I have come to a better appreciation of this unique lady and talent his sister is.

With three steamy books by the women in Elvis's life already published (1997's Elvis: In the Twilight of Memory by June Juanico; Priscilla Beaulieu Presley's 1991 tell-all, Elvis and Me; and Joyce Bova's Don't Ask Forever: My Love Affair with Elvis), can the world absorb another? Suzanne Finstad, author of Child Bride: The Untold Story of Priscilla Beaulieu Presley, certainly hopes so.

With as many darkly intriguing details as the chambers of Graceland, Finstad--journalist, lawyer, and author of two true-crime books--defends her own theories on the complexity and grit of the former Mrs. Presley. Why did she conspire with her mother to keep her paternity a secret? How old was she when she took up with the King? Suzanne Finstad treats us to her own exhaustively researched version of the facts.

Book Description

Child Bride is the untold story of Elvis Presley's love affair with Priscilla Beaulieu, the only woman he ever married. Includes such revelations as:
* The catalyst for Elvis's long-awaited proposal to Priscilla * The reasons for Elvis's fascination with teenage girls and other sexual secrets * The real reason Priscilla left Elvis * How Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie really met, and why they became involved * And much more!

3 out of 5 stars Child Bride: The Untold Story of Priscilla Beaulieu Presley.......2007-10-05

This was a well written book but it made me wonder how much was actually true. I have read several books lately and each one of them tells the same story in different ways and views.

1 out of 5 stars I'll never trust Finstad again.......2007-08-17

I am a Finstad fan. I have enjoyed her other books but am questioning everything she has professed as truth since reading this book. I had to quit reading it because it is so caustic. I do not care who first suggested that Priscilla meet Elvis and I don't want to read ten pages on speculation of the event! Ms. Finstad has found a good way to make herself appear to be not only a mean-spirited writer, but a complete idiot. She alludes to the fact that Priscilla might have been molested by an alcoholic father. Priscilla's behavior coincides with many girls who are molested at a young age, including mine. However, her speculation concerning Priscilla's motives proves that she knows not of what she speaks. Yes, girls who are molested tend to be a bit promiscuous. In my case, I "numbed out" when with boys and hardly remember some of the things I did. That was a coping mechanism I learned at an early age. The memories of my childhood and teen years and even my first marriage are so full of holes that I don't remember half of what happened. I have a good childhood friend that plugs in those holes with information the best she can. Sometimes I am very surprised at an event she tells me about that I have no memory of. Also the trauma of growing up in an alcoholic, military-type home screws with your head. Having a promiscuous boyfriend and husband is very degrading and causes crazy thoughts and patterns. I am 60 years old and am just getting my life straight after living much of my life as Priscilla did. I did not have a famous husband so I can only imagine what a 14 year old child would think of being dated by such a famous man. Teen agers see things so black and white and are so idealistic. It must have been horrible for him to tell her he loved her and then to see articles in the papers about all his affairs. Still, she obviously loved him and wanted to keep him. On the other hand, she must have thought it all a dream and continued to date others in the absence of his calls and commitment. Her parents obviously acted irresponsibly and were clearly "star struck." People who are star struck try not to believe that that star would do anything untoward. Look at the idiot parents who let their children spend the night with Michael Jackson, even after all the allegations against him. Priscilla's parents were irresponsible and naive.

Currie Grant sounds like a dispicable person but is portrayed as the perveyor of all truth. He is an admitted adulterer and child rapist. As Priscilla was only 14, it is known as rape, whether she consented or not. He was the adult and bears all the responsibility. Finstad proposes that this characterless man speaks the complete truth. Finstad is either naive or is willingly being dupped.

Whatever the circumstances, which we will never really know, Ms. Finstad has lost my respect because she is so hung up on trashing Priscilla that she loses her audience. She tries to turn Priscilla into a monster. She dwells on the most insignificant, idiotic things that few people are interested in if they pick up this book. The tone of the book is mean and hateful. Her information comes from others who seem to want us to think they knew the people involved intimately but are identified as a "classmate" or a "friend of a friend". How insightful can those people be, looking from the outside, speculating on someone they probably barely knew, if at all, and deciding what their behavior and motives were based on gossip and inuendo? I think this book is a disaster.

5 out of 5 stars Priscilla is the reason for Elvis's doom........2006-07-26

After all these years, I still havent reached peace with untimely loss of Elvis. Priscilla was the reason and responsible for Elvis's doom.

Since Priscilla walked out of Elvis at hight of his career for other man who was supposedly Elvis's friend. What a betrayal, cruel and nasty bitch. How could she go on like nothing happened, it's just a life? Hello? Publicly humiliating Elvis was a serious crime. This book only proved that how Priscilla was wrong for Elvis. She still acts as merry widow Mrs. presly that I totally oppose. She was divorced and shouldn't carry his name. It's disturbing to know this sexually active sordid woman to run Elvis estate.

I think Lisa Marie still hasn't reached her peace with loss of her father. Why she appear angry to this day?
At least this book by Ms Finstad did justce and revenge for us.

4 out of 5 stars Fair Treatment by Finstad.......2006-07-11

Suzanne Finstad did exhaustive research for this book as evidenced in the 16 pages of "Sources" listed at the end of her book. I disagree with people who have said the book was malicious or vindictive of Priscilla Presley. Finstad paints the picture of a "Survivor" -- a little girl who had alot of fight and drive and ambition in her. Finstad's various attempts to analyze Priscilla's behavior come off as perhaps amateurish, but all in all, they ring true. Priscilla is described as having the intelligence and assertiveness of something like a great white shark, but it is not described as a negative characteristic in her. Her life hasn't always been pretty, but by the time the reader nears the end of the book, you almost come to the belief that Priscilla Presley probably DESERVES every ounce of happiness she now enjoys. Her life has never been easy, despite her wealth and fame.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-06-29

Before I start off on my review on this book, I want to let it be known how much I love Elvis Presley. So anything that I can read on him is imperative to me.

I read Elvis and Me about a year ago, and I had some very mixed feelings about the book. I had some unanswered questions that I feel this book got to the root of.

I try not to pass judgment on people, and I thought before I even started to read this book that it would be a smear campaign. I was wrong. I believe this book got to the "root" of a lot of questions that people have been asking for a very long time.

Reading some of the reviews on here I would like to "touch" on the Currie Grant topic. I wonder if most people know anything ab out the military. If she told her parents she was raped by this man, and Priscilla's father was a captain, he would have been under the brig--still. So do I believe he raped her. Not at all. As a matter of fact, I dont believe anything she says about him. I believe that as a military man at his age, yes he was nasty, but it happens all the time. These young girls go on base and get themselves into all sorts of trouble. Now do I think what happened (in his version of the story) is sad? Yes! I think she really wanted to meet Elvis and would do just about anything to get there. He even says he was wrong, but wrong doesnt mean it didn't happen.

I think Priscilla was very grown for her age. I think she wanted to be something, groomed into something she was not. I actually feel kind of sorry for her. I think her mother pushed her, and I believe she pushed herself. She pushed herself into something she wasn't ready for.

As to the Author, Mrs. Finstad, I think she did a wonderful job researching this project. She went to a lot of different people and I feel that everyone can't be wrong. Her school friends seem to have the same opinion of her--albiet not so "fluffy" it is their opinion.

With books such as these you have to realize that the point of view you are reading are coming from people who are allowed to feel that way. If Priscilla doesnt remember things that way so be it. However you have to wonder a couple of things. One, Why would anyone's parents agree to let their 14 year old daughter go out with a grown man (Mr. Grant) in the first place? Second, why would they let thier 14 year old daughter go to the house of a known sex idol without supervision? These questions beg one to ask, did they have this thing planned for a while? I think the author answers all these questions in the book and in reality, all her answers make sense.

One last thing before I close, why would they not allow her to know about her real father as well as his family? I think they should be bitter. They did nothing wrong. They had a right to know and love a member of their family.

I think this is a must read. If nothing more then to get the other side of the story.

4 out of 5 stars Happy Motherýs Day.......2003-06-28

Little Bill can hardly contain his excitement. It is Mother's Day and he is determined to make it a wonderful day for his mom. Little Bill leads his mother on a scavenger hunt to find the five gifts that he has for her. Throughout the search, Little Bill reiterates the love he has for his mother and how thankful he is for all that she does for the family.

Author Catherine Lukas has done an excellent job with this book. It is a tribute to mothers, seen through the eyes of a child. Children will enjoy the bright and colorful illustrations, and will be able to relate to the gifts that Little Bill gives his mother. They learn the valuable lesson that gift giving is not about how much money you spend, but that the best gift one can give is the gift of love.

        Book Description

There is much controversy about the dangers of a free media when it comes to children and adolescents. Many believe that this constitutional right should be amended, altered, or revoked entirely to prevent the young from being negatively influenced. Graphic violence, sexual content, and the depiction of cigarette smoking have all come under fire as being unacceptable in media that is geared toward adolescents, from television and movies to magazines and advertising. Yet not much has been written about the developmental science behind these ideas, and what effects a free media really has on adolescents. This book presents a synthesis of all current knowledge about the developmental effects of a free media on adolescents. Levesque first presents a full analysis of research studies into the media's effects on adolescents in four key areas: sexuality, violence, smoking, and body image. All findings are assessed within the context of normal adolescent development. Levesque then discusses how this knowledge can be used to inform current standards for the regulation of free speech with regard to adolescents. Both legal restrictions and less formal regulatory bodies (schools, parent groups, etc.) are reviewed to present a full picture of the ways in which a free media is constrained to protect adolescent's development.

        5 out of 5 stars A SHARING OF EXPERIENCE.......2005-08-21

This second book by Dirk Benedict touches on some deeply personal experiences of his life that he shares with the reader. It interchanges between the tale of his father's death and his first child's birth, each unique experiences.
He and his wife had elected to have a homebirth way before they became fashoinable, and the endless parade of misfit Midwives makes for humorous reading.
the personal tradgedy of his father's murder, and the state of the family during that time give depth to the pages.
As well as he touches on subtle aspects of his life that may haunt him later, such as his head injuries that kept him out of the Army and his suggestion Natural birth should be required by law for at least two children per family. (Do we really want the government making this personal decision for us? How could anyone make such a suggestion!)
One point of note is chapter 9. A rant against birth-control and a disticntly male-sided view of free love and yuppies, (These views only are valid with one generation and don't seem to apply to us younger then baby boomers) which is typical of his style but totally seems out of place with the rest of the book.
A deeply moving recounting of past experiences with an ironic climax.
But a suggestion to a would-be-buyer: Get it off of Amazon. It's much cheaper. [...]

        5 out of 5 stars Bravo! Bravo!.......2003-10-25

I loved Dirk's Second book, and it was so wonderfully written by a honest man, not by a celebrity, and I actually felt for the man what he went through for the birth of his first son, George, by reading the pages, and I love the ending, and I hope that he would actually write more for the happiness, and the being of his fans, because we would want more, who wouldn't agree with me?

5 out of 5 stars A TAPESTRY OF THE HEART.......2002-05-20

In case you didn't know, Dirk Benedict is that good looking actor who endeared himself to millions by playing the loveable scam artist, "Face" on the A-Team. In addition to this and numerous other acting credits, Mr. Benedict has to rank as one of the finest yet most under-rated writers of non-fiction in America. Believe it! He is THAT good!

In, "And Then We Went Fishing", he delicately intertwines the story of the birth of his son with the tragic murder of his father. And he throws in a little bit of Shakespeare for company. But the English bard is not needed here as Mr. Benedict's smooth and thoughtful prose can easily stand on it's own merits.

The author does not play it safe with this book. It's not just that he chooses to show us his heart and share his intimate thoughts. He risks compromising this by using flash backs. Lesser word smiths can mess up their stories when they use this style by confusing their readers with the "back and forth" technique. Not Dirk Benedict. He has masterful control of his prose and manages to captivate his reading audience. The result is a beautiful tapestry of 2 different stories that occured decades apart.

The only criticism I have of this work is the occasional use of cuss words. Not to be prudish, but most of them were really not necessary. I would recommend that those who teach others how to write prose, put this book on their students required reading list. The tome will not only teach them technique but it will give them a clear example of what putting one's heart into their writing is truly about.

Dirk Benedict, you're not only a talented actor but a great author. Encore.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a pretty "face"!.......2000-09-24

From the guy who brought so many cliches to the screen, to a writer with an honest and traditional background, came "And then we went fishing". I cannot describe the underlying sense or feeling one receives when reading this book. Then comes a story from out of the blue that confirms to you inside that there are good people in the world, moreover, there are people who can be honest with those they know not. To me that is the sign of a true writer, more importantly of a good man. Good Luck.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story.......2000-07-12

I was deeply moved by Dirk Benedict's honesty and daring to reveal and share such a personal tale. For me, the Shakespearean references to Hamlet added to the story as he gradually revealed the details. It was a powerful book for me, and gave me more respect for the inner strength of the author.

        Book Description

Big World, Small Screen assesses the influence of television on the lives of the most vulnerable and powerless in American society: children, ethnic and sexual minorities, and women. Many in these groups are addicted to television, although they are not the principal audiences sought by commercial TV distributors because they are not the most lucrative markets for advertisers.

This important book illustrates the power of television in stereotyping the elderly, ethnic groups, gays and lesbians, and the institutionalized and, thus, in contributing to the self-image of many viewers. They go on to consider how television affects social interaction, intellectual functioning, emotional development, and attitudes (toward family life, sexuality, and mental and physical health, for example). They illustrate the medium's potential to teach and inform, to communicate across nations and cultures—and to induce violence, callousness, and amorality. Parents will be especially interested in what they say about television viewing and children. Finally, they offer suggestions for research and public policy with the aim of producing programming that will enrich the lives of citizens all across the spectrum.

Nine psychologists, members of the Task Force on Television and Society appointed by the American Psychological Association, have collaborated on Big World, Small Screen.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Science About the Effects of TV.......2002-04-21

After reading this book, you'll have solid proof that television actually molds human behavior. The irresponsible mantra by the Hollywood elite that their movies simply reflect life, and are in no way responsible for violence in our society, is roundly disproven with solid, scientific evidence. Besides directly being responsible for increasing senseless violence, irresponsible television producers have also caused increased racism in America. This is a must read for anyone who wants to decrease violence and racism in our world.
