Book Description

When Jeffrey Stepakoff was graduating with an MFA in playwriting, he imagined a life in the New York theater, wearing a beret and smoking clove cigarettes. Writing for the "boob tube" didn't even cross his mind. But he ended up in L.A. in the late 80's, when television writers were experiencing their equivalent of a gold rush. After the billion- dollar syndication of Seinfeld, when studios were paying astronomical amounts of money to writers to create the next Friends or ER, the sudden mania for scripted entertainment made the TV writer a hot commodity. He found himself meeting with big agents, inside primetime story rooms, pitch meetings, and on the set of some of TVs most popular shows, and making more money than he'd ever thought possible.

Weaving his personal story with television's, Stepakoff takes us behind the scenes to show what it's like to have a story idea one week and see it come to life and be seen by millions of people just a week later. Stepakoff also takes us inside the industry to explain what we're watching and why by exploring the growing problems of media consolidation, the effects of interference from executives, the lack of diversity, and what reality television is doing to quality scripted television.

When the market crashed and the dust settled, TV executives and the media conglomerates they worked for were sitting on a broken business model. Slowly, a new programming idea began to take hold—what if the writer and their salaries were removed from the equation? Reality TV was born and the TV writer suddenly became obsolete— at least temporarily.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST behind-the-scenes book about television writing!.......2007-08-01

Having written and produced over 250 hours of television drama, I lived nearly every scenario in Jeffrey Stepakoff's book. Now, as a Professor of Television Writing, this is the ONLY book my students will be required to read. From process to production, history to reality, "Billion Dollar Kiss" is the most complete guide to the business of writing for television. Plus, with Stepakoff's light and humorous touch, it's a kick to read.

5 out of 5 stars "Kiss" the author for writing this book!.......2007-07-06

A tell-all insiders look into the "real" world of television from TV writing, making, producing, and all the eccentric characters that are involved along the way...Jeffrey Stepakoff describes the television industry from soup to nuts, through its glory (and not so glory) days. As a huge fan of Dawson's Creek, and an avid watcher of television, and lover of quality writing in general, this book was truly a non-stop treat. Thank you Jeffrey for opening our world to this crazy, fun, and certainly unpredictable biz!

2 out of 5 stars Good, but not about Dawson's Creek!.......2007-06-27

I bought this book being a huge fan of Dawson's Creek and looking forward to the behind-the-scenes of that show. I was sorely disappointed! There are maybe 20 pages of Dawson's creek in the 300+ pages of the book. Because of this, I find that the title of the book is highly misleading.

I can definitely appreciate the TV industry scoop and insider perspective of the book. It was easy to read and entertaining, although I did spend the entire time reading waiting to get to the part where he worked on Dawson's. However, as someone who would not have read the book if it had been more appropriately billed as "An Insider's Perspective at the History and Workings of the TV Industry," I feel somewhat cheated.

Don't get me wrong, if TV history insider is what you are looking for, this book is great. But if it's Dawson's you are looking for, look somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Could Not Put it Down!!.......2007-06-13

I highly recomend this book to anyone who wants an insight into how Hollywood works. Amazing read!

4 out of 5 stars great story, fresh style, honest information about notoriously superficial and opaque world of entertainment writing.......2007-06-09

Having just this week seen a "news" story about the "CREAKY-ness" (oh, please!) of Dawson's Creek, I was reminded of how Jeff Stepakoff's book about Hollywood and TV writing rockets along with a payload of facts and smoothly-feeding fuel tank of wit. What a pleasure, to see taste, insight, and actual rhetorical skill streaming from what is far too often a trashy industry.

4 out of 5 stars Dawsons creek scrap book.......2007-04-15

Its cool if you like dawsons creek. Its about the cast and characters, their history and life, behind the scenes, best catchphrases and some scripts from the show.

4 out of 5 stars The real thing, straight from the show, by its own admission.......2003-05-28

I made my way to the WB as a result of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," so while I knew that "Dawson's Creek" was their teen soap opera but when a SNL skit made reference to Pacey I thought that was a different name for a girl. But when my students in Popular Culture begged to be able to write about this show for their television papers I started watching it (the gang was graduating from Capeside High in that episode). Last month when the show went into syndication and was available on DVD I was able to go back and watch the show all the way from the beginning and on through the grand finale (For the record, no, I was not surprised by who died or who Joey picked, not that I necessarily approved of either decision). In that context it is interesting to check out "Dawson's Creek: The Official Scrapbook" and relive the beginning once more.

The most interesting thing is that Kevin Williamson and the producers clearly thought that Michelle Williams as Jen, who had been an alien in "Species" and was about to co-star in "Dick" with Kirsten Dunst, was supposed to be the main female on the show. Of course, it ended up being Katie Holmes as Joey. Then there was the matter of Dawson's hair during that first season, which might not have made James Van Der Beek look five years young, but certainly made him look immature (although the book claims the look is supposed to be "poetic"). Then there are the "More than 80 photos!" promised on the cover, almost all of which are the four main heartthrobs in various combinations (but none of Joey and Pacey, oddly enough), and which easily convince me that Michelle Williams smiling and showing her teeth looks a lot better than smiling with just her lips (you have to pay attention to details like this to really appreciate a show).

The main thing is that this scrapbook is fan friendly. You get short bios of both the four characters and the actors playing them, shots of the locations where the show was filmed, shots of some of the favorite scenes, and the best lines from the first season (e.g., "I just think out emerging hormones are destined to alter our relationship and I'm trying to limit the fallout"). There is also a brief section on "Styles of the Stars" where we learn Pacey is "a D student with a Julius Caesar haircut" and a couple of pages of actual scripts from the show (that is "couple" as in two). The chief attraction remains the inside tidbits, as to who was creator Kevin Williamson's high school sweetheart that served as the model for Joey (Fanny Norwood), the name of Josh Jackson's Rhodesian Ridgeback (Shumba), and where they film the exterior scenes for Capeside High (University of North Carolina at Wilmington). So, what you end up with is not great, but certainly worthwhile at this price.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the 'major' fans!.......2001-03-31

This is good for fans of dawsons creek. Its full of pictures, but most are from the first season. Its not got a story line or anything its, just something to look threw that you would do very quickly and probably never look at again. If you just love the show, your gonna want to get this, but i would recoment getting one of the Dawsons Creek novels instead because they are far more entertaining!

4 out of 5 stars The low down on the lifes of the star's at Dawson's Creek!.......1999-06-11

This book is a must have of any Dawson's Creek fan! The book doesn't have a story line like any other Dawson's Creek book but describe the lifes of the 4 main characters in the Creek and in real life. By reading this book you find out about the star's past , present and future television and film jobs . The book gives you information about which star bring's his dog to work every day , what starsign they are and what there nick-names were ! You also find out about the characters in the creek which is a great help to those people who haven't seen Dawson's Creek and don't know the back grounds of all the characters. If this hasn't grasped you there is a piece by the producer Kevin Wialliamson with his thoughts and comments. The book also has a copy of some of the original T.V script with Kevin Williamson comments . My favourite part of the book is a page full of some of the most famous quotes ever in Dawson's Creek which reminds you of past events in the Creek. Over all I find this book a inspiring guide to the minds of 4 of the most confused teenagers which makes it a perfect guide to Dawson's Creek!

4 out of 5 stars The book is a must have for fans........1998-10-13

The book is a must have even though the true fans probably already know all of this stuff. The book has the best quotes and tells about the characters and the actors. The only thing people don't probably know is about the changes in the piot script. Over all its a pretty good book.

Book Description

"No one is allowed."

Joey, Pacey, Dawson, and Jen shudder at the housekeeper's ominous words. It's dark and gloomy at one end of the Southern plantation where Jen's cousin Monique lives, and nothing's been touched in the off-limits wing since 1870. Isabella Percy, Monique's relative, died there of a broken heart, waiting in vain for her true love to return after the Civil War.

A spooky mansion, a secret tunnel, a romantic love story, and some voodoo: Dawson is convinced the group is in for the adventure of their lives.

But evil is near.

5 out of 5 stars Good Reading.......2005-07-08

This book was totally awsome for a Dawson's Creek book. The characters got to do cool things. And it had a creepy story to it like a thriller movie. I recomend this to all Dawson's Creek fansor even ones who aren't as big fans. Great reading for a book from a tv show.

4 out of 5 stars Bayou Blues.......2001-05-31

Strangely, this book was awesome. I read a couple of the other Dawson's Creek books before, but I liked this one even better because of the suspense. It was really fun and suspenseful. I've read tons and tons of TV-related Young Adult novels, and this one is far away the best. Most are really, really cheesy, but "Bayou Blues" actually reads like an actual novel written by writers with actual talent. It's definitely a fun read.

    Book Description

Not since that famous Beverly Hills area code was etched into our minds has teen life been given such loving attention. TV's newest hit, A smart, articulate, sexy program showing "real" kids at the very top of their intellectual game, Dawson's Creek set exciting new standards for how television portrays young America. Created by Hollywood sensation Kevin Williamson, it does for the small-screen teen soap opera what his metafilmic Scream did for the slasher flick. In the small town of Capeside, a close-knit group of teenagers hang together and fall apart. Their rites of passage are familiar, classically adolescent, and as we follow Dawson, Pacey, Jen, and Joey through their exciting years we learn that life has everything to do with misbehaving. Covered in They Don't Wanna Wait are the stars: a compelling, captivating, talented bunch who leave the set each day, shaking their heads, marveling at the emotional and intellectual accuracy of the scenes they play. Revealed is what makes the show a nearly sacred experience for its participants and much Dawson Leary has in common with his creator, Kevin Williamson.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Actually there is more analysis than gossip in this book.......2003-07-27

"They Don't Wanna Wait: The Stars of Dawson's Creek" came out after the first two seasons of the recently departed signature show of the WB network. The title, of course, is inspired by the Paula Cole song that served as the theme song for the series and while this book clearly uses the young stars of the show a selling point, it actually provides a lot more insights into the series than you would expect. The first two seasons takes us through the Pacey and Ms. Jacobs, Jen and Dawson, Dawson and Joey, Joey and Jack, Pacey and Andie stages of the series. Authors Kathe Tibbs and Biff L. Peterson offer up standard cast bios of the six principles (the youngsters, not Dawson's parents or Grams), covering how each got involved in acting and was hired for the show, along with various movies in which they had appeared by that point in their careers.

However, despite the fact that "They Don't Wanna Wait" offers up the stars of "Dawson's Creek" as its selling point, these profiles are the second smallest part of the book. The second chapter is devoted to rather a detailed look at the Hollywood writing career creator of "Dawson's Creek," Kevin Williamson. "The Importance of Being Earnest," the third chapter, consists of a pair of critical essays. The first looks at "TV Teens in the 1990s," making the case for how the idyllic teen world of John Hughes films gave way to the demographic spurred youth boom of "My So-Called Life," "Party of Five," "Dawson's Creek," and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." The second, "Up the Creek: The 'Dawson's' Formula," refutes the dismissal of the series as simply a teenage version of "Melrose Place" ("Payton Place" is you are my age).

The final section of the book is an Episode Guide covering the episodes from the first two seasons. For each Tibbs and Peterson provide the title, writer, director, original airdate, and list of guest stars (Note: Williamson originally used movie titles as the titles for first season episodes but had to change them because of copyright problems; both titles are provided here). They do not simply provide a synopsis of the storyline for each episode, but a running commentary and analysis of what is happening (e.g., arguing Joey is the show's voyeur) that will make these sections of considerably more interest to those who have seen the show rather than the neophyte. When the authors claim that Episode 8, "Road Trip" is to Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" the way "Clueless" is to Jane Austen's "Emma," you have to admit that Tibbs and Peterson are going for more that mere summaries.

Most of the information provided about the cast and creator of "Dawson's Creek" is apparently culled from secondary sources, and each of the first three chapters concludes with a list of references. If Tibbs and Peterson ever actually interviewed Williamson or anybody else associated with the show there is no way of knowing from what is in this book (unless I missed something). I bring this up only because if this is indeed cobbled together completely from other sources you cannot find the seams. Besides, there is more than enough originality in the insights and analysis they provide in the last second chapters of the book. Those who pick up this book because they want to know more about what "Greek God" James Van Der Beek was like growing up or want another color photograph of Katie Holmes or Michelle Williams might be disappointed that the authors move on to more substantive issues than how Meredith Monroe got this acting gig, but I was pretty impressed they went for so much more in this volume. The only serious complaint is that "They Don't Wanna Wait" does not even get the gang out of Capeside High School.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! This Book Is Totally Awesome!.......1999-12-10

It was so cool to read all the interesting background information on James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams! And I never knew that Kevin Williamson was really gay--he really is! Know I know why Dawson stands alone in the boat like that--he's a truth-seeker in an ocean of lies! This book tells you all the facts about the most important television show ever filmed. Yeah!

Meanwhile, Pacey hits the weights and his newly toned physique is turning heads. Andie is clearly impressed but so are all the beautiful models he's meeting....

5 out of 5 stars love the idea.......2003-07-29

i thought this book was one of the best in the series. the story brought joey and pacey closer which was great, although it would have been better had they let that story develop a little more. The ony bad thing was that jack was in the book for about two seconds, either he should have had more lines or they should have left him out. But all in all this one is worth the read.

    4 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2000-11-24

I liked this it had a good story line but the hole book seemed to be about joey. It is definatley worth reading if your a dawsons creek fan though. I would also definatley recomend major meltdown as i think thats the best in the series.

5 out of 5 stars MY Favorite one! RECOMMENDED!.......2000-06-30

Out of all the Dawson's Creek books , this one is my favorite! I really liked the idea of everything! I'm glad she got closer to Pacey... cuz i like them together :)

    5 out of 5 stars Joey's got props.......2000-05-25

I enjoyed this book because it focused a lot on Joey. She is my favorite character on Dawson's Creek. This book was spectacular. With Pacey in it, it added humor. Joey's dilemma was the plot of the book, and I could not put it down.

4 out of 5 stars missing the Kevin Williamson touch.......1999-05-05

This attempt at a good Dawson's Creek story was achieved. It is certainly the best out of the books that are out there on the show. But all the books are missing the Kevin Williamson touch that only he can bring to the characters. And where was Andie's brother Jack.He only said about two things the whole story.

4 out of 5 stars The creekers hit new york!.......2000-08-28

I liked this book i thought the Jen and Joey story line was great but the dawson story line wasnt vewry interesting and the Pacy one was non existant! He was just thrown in here and there. But this was made up by the Jen and Joey one. This book has a different atmosphere to the other dawsons creek ones i think thats because its set in new york so it goes from quiet Capeside with the usuall dawson and Joey solemates story lines which are still there but there not the whole story, to all new ones. I think thats wg=hat makes this book good.

    5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......2000-05-17

God,this book was awesome. It would be great for an episode.

5 out of 5 stars It would be a great episode!.......1999-06-29

This book would make a great episode! Joey was almost happy! It was the first time that you could really see how desperate Dawson is, and how persistant Jen is to win Joey as a friend. Tihs book provides all of the usual conficts of a "too old" group of teens. I would recomend it!

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this book........1999-05-05

1 out of 5 stars POSSIBLY THE WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO RE.......2001-02-05

i WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS ARRIVING IN THE POST, BUT DISAPPOINTMENT DOES NOT EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE MY FEELINGS WHEN IT CAME. THE BOOK ITSELF IS FLIMSY, PRINTED ON CHEAP, NASTY PAPER AND BARELY WORTH 50P. ALTMEN WRITES WITH A DISTURBINGLY GIDDY, CHILDISH APPROACH, CONSIDERING SHE GIVES YOU THE IMPRESSION SHE IS A GROWN, MARRIED WOMAN. PLUS SHE HAS NO IDEA WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT. STATEMENTS SUCH AS 'YOU NEVER SEE TOMBOY JOEY IN A SKIRT OR DRESS' ARE BOUND TO IRRITATE FANS WHO WATCH EVERY WEEK,AND HAVE SEEN JOEY PROGRESS FROM A TOMBOY TO HAVING A WARDROBE WHICH A MODEL WOULD BE ENVIOUS OF. UNFORTUNEATELY, STATEMENTS SUCH AS THIS ARE FREQUENT AND ANNOYING, THIS WOMAN DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE. DON'T BE TEMPTED BY THE DECEPTIVELY CHEAP PRICE OF THIS, BUY A PROPER GUIDE. THIS IS A WASTE OF TIME, EFFORT AND MONEY.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book to read!!.......1999-07-15

This is an excellent book to read if you love the tv show Dawson`s Creek. You will know all of the info about the characters and all of the actresses and actors who play them. This is the best chance to know more than your friends about your favorite tv show!! Put this book on your list of books to read this summer. Trust me, this is coming from a Dawson`s Creek fanatic, you have to get this book and read it now!! Hope you enjoy it!!

1 out of 5 stars This Book Could Have Been Written By An Illiterate Child.......1999-01-03

I am pretty new to DC, but I still know a lot about it. I thought this book might have good info, but I was terribly mistaken and it was a waste of my $4.50. Sheryl Altman writes like a giddy teenybopper and obviously has no clue what the hell shes talking about. This book could've might as well been a 6th grade writing assignment. If you want to read a guide to a television show, you want someone who knows what they're talking about. I mean, the author spends a whole chapter discussing Dawson's interest for Steven Spielberg! Ms. Altman, i have five words for you: DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB.

3 out of 5 stars Not too much information.......1998-09-07

It was short compared to the other Dawson's Creek books and had the same information. The only original thing in this book was the episode analysis with grades for romance.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for research on the television show........1998-06-23

The book is pretty good, it's more for elementry school, Jr. High School level though. It has lots of great information on the cast, a episode guide, pictures of the cast from the show and previous things they've done. All in all it's actually pretty good.
