Book Description
Who was Rita Hayworth? Born Margarita Carmen Cansino, she spent her life subjected to others' definitions of her, no matter how hard she worked to claim her own identity. Although there have been many "revelations" about her life and career, Adrienne McLean's book is the first to show that such disclosures were part of a constructed image from the outset.
McLean explores Hayworth's participation in the creation of her star persona, particularly through her work as a dancera subject ignored by most film scholars. The passive love goddess, as it turns out, had a unique appeal to other women who, like her, found it extraordinarily difficult to negotiate the competing demands of family, domesticity, and professional work outside the home. Being Rita Hayworth also considers the ways in which the actress has been treated by film scholarship over the years to accomplish its own goals, sometimes at her expense. Several of Hayworth's best-known star vehiclesamong them Gilda (1946), Down to Earth (1947), The Lady from Shanghai (1948), and Affair in Trinidad (1952) are discussed in depth.

Exploring the creation of this popular movie star's persona.......2005-01-12
Being Rita Hayworth: Labor, Identity And Hollywood Stardom by Adrienne L. McLean (Assistant Professor of Film Studies, University of Texas-Dallas) strives to answer the question "Who was Rita Hayworth?" Exploring the creation of this popular movie star's persona, beloved in movies such as "The Lady from Shanghai" (1948) and "Affair in Trinidad" (1952), Being Rita Hayworth takes an especial interest in her appeal to other women of the day who were struggling to navigate the demands of family and work outside the home. Careful research of Hayworth's life frames the chapters, which meticulously pick apart fabricated image and propaganda from what can be verified as truth. An excellent read for anyone with an especial interest in not only Hayworth's career, but the ripple effect her star persona had on the hearts and minds of a female generation.

Arranged in an encyclopedic approach by manner of death, these well-researched accounts include details of celebrities' colorful lives and unusual deaths, their funerals, and the intriguing aftermath. Bizarre Read.......2006-03-16
This had all the bizarre, and perverse stories I have read in a long time. I have read accounts of some of these deaths but they weren't quite as sordid as these.
Not all that impressive.......2006-02-05
I like this book, but felt it left out so many interesting cases.
Most of the entries were not sordid or bizarre as the cover states but simply sad.

Skin is In!!!.......2007-05-29
From cover to cover this book is full of usefull knowledge. You can search by actress, movie, or tv show. I purchased this book for my brothers birthday. I even had to buy my own copy.
Decent book, but the website is incredible!.......2006-04-10
This book is decent enough, but not the Skincyclopedia it claims to be. As others have said, it is not kept up to date, and doesn't have complete listings including times. Mr. Skin's website, however, is the absolute ultimate! For simple reference, it's absolutely free and complete resource constantly updated. For a fee, it will give you film clips and still photos of all the scenes mentioned!
So, this is a very basic reference, but the website is the ultimate guide.

Easy to read,concise resource.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!.......2005-11-19
Not sure where to start and I don't want to write to see how i write. Mr. Skin must be getting commissions on the orders readers make per his recos. He and his group don't see "naked" with the same criteria. Some descriptions are understated, most are overstated.

Customer Reviews:
A nice book but...........2007-09-13
I received this book as a gift and starting reading it right away. An interesting little book, but there should have been other actresses added and better editing done. For example on page 95 there is a photo of Susan Hayward and Richard Conte. The caption on the photo is 'I Want to Live! 1958) unfortunatly, Richard Conte was NOT in that film, the photo is actually from 'I'll Cry Tomorrow'. A mistake like this especially from the folks in connection with Turner Classic Movies is really an insult to movie buffs! This makes the rest of the book suspect. Shame on them!
FOR THE ELITE.......2007-07-27
where are my favorites. any book with WITHOUT joan blondell and deanna durbin is lame. the authors are bullies to frame their top 50 as any where close to the top 50 of the average joe.
Great Reference for Movie Buffs.......2007-07-12
This book is a fine reference for classic movie fans -- I know when I am watching a film and an actor or actress looks familiar, I want to know where else I might have seen them. Additionally, when I see a "new" face in a classic film (well, new to me, anyway), I want to know where else to see them. This book is a good source. Each actress is represented by a full-page head shot -- and they look their best here -- a short bio, more pictures, some trivia and quotes. This all works to create a portrait of the actress. And I have to admit, as someone who came of age while the Farrah Fawcett poster was all the rage, I have come to discover how beautiful these leading ladies in their prime really were.
Leading Ladies: The 50 Most Unforgettable Actresses of the Studio Era.......2007-05-29
Well written and entertaining. Great gift for Grandma.
some weird choices.......2006-11-03
It's always easy to criticize somebody's personal choises when it comes to the movies and the stars, but this book is dedicated to the most unforgettable ACTRESSES and not STARS of the studio era. So it comes pretty natural to ask : Is Esther Williams such an unforgettable actress that the author had to overlook Margaret Sullavan? Was Grace Kelly's talent so overwhelming to forget that Miriam Hopkins had such an individuality in the acting process that she kept on working with such directors as Lubitsch, Wyler, Mamoulian, Hawks and Vidor to stunning results? What was wrong with Mary Astor's acting and what is right with Kim Novak's ?
Actress to me means Patricia Neal or Shelley Winters - Norma Shearer or Natalie Wood were stars....think about it.

James Dean: At Speed

Book Description
Like a restless ghost, James Dean (1921-1955) continues to haunt us. Though he died nearly 50 years ago, the enigmatic star of East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause, and Giant still symbolizes the mystery and torment of adolescence-an image that his sudden, violent death fixed forever in the public mind.
Magnum photographer Dennis Stock met Dean in Hollywood in 1954 and began to capture him on camera. Shot over a three-month period just as the young actor's star began to rise, these iconic photographs are the greatest pictures ever taken of Dean. Together with Stock's text and an introduction by Dean biographer Joe Hyams, the images provide an extraordinarily intimate view of the cult legend whose brooding good looks captivated fans by illuminating the troubled depths of his character. Published on the 50th anniversary of his death, this is the definitive photographic portrait of James Dean in both his professional and his private worlds-the real man behind the lingering legend. AUTHOR BIO: Dennis Stock has been associated with Magnum Photos since 1951, and his photographs are in the collections of many major museums. Stock is the author of 16 books, including California Trip, on the surrealistic landscape of that state. He lives in Connecticut. Joe Hyams is the noted author of 28 books, among them James Dean: Little Boy Lost, the definitive Dean biography. Immediately after Dean's death, he was the first authorized by the actor's family to write about him.

James Dean is the coolest.......2007-03-09
i will say that this book show you how he star from the small town to the big city and then california
this is a clasic book that is going to be for generation , specially if you like James Dean
BLACK AND WHITE AND COOL.......2007-02-05
My good friend, Carole, sent me a copy of an official publication from a JAMES DEAN fan club. Inside was a lengthy story she had written recounting the 1988 trip that she and six other "die-hard Dean fans" (including Jimmy's boyhood friend, Bob Pulley) made to California, during which I escorted the group to several of the prominent Dean-related sites in Los Angeles. Happily reliving those days through Carole's recollections, I was inspired to lose myself in my copy of Dennis Stock's JAMES DEAN REVISITED. His JAMES DEAN: FIFTY YEARS AGO is essentially a special, retitled hardcover reissue with the photographs beautifully enlarged, and a few splendid ones previously unpublished now included.
My copy - a gift from my employer in 1993 - is inscribed, "To a fellow alien who straddles two worlds...the art is in the living." My magazine-publishing boss bought me the book, but being a major fan, naturally, this essential book for Dean fans was already in my bookcase. I subsequently gave away my older copy and kept his gift.
As a wannabe actor fresh out of high school in 1977 (Santa Monica High, coincidentally also known as Dawson High in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE), I discovered Dean at a Fox Venice Theater showing of what I consider Dean's greatest film, EAST OF EDEN. This was before movies were available for purchase and home viewing. I was mesmerized then knocked out of my boots; everything struck a chord of harmony within me: the sense of youthful alienation; the brooding intensity; the moodiness; the frustration; the quest for meaning. I was hooked, and James Dean became my idol.
In September of 1980, I took my first extensive solo trip, flying into Indianapolis and then driving to Dean's hometown, Fairmount, for the festival honoring the 25th anniversary of his death. Through happenstance (?), I met Carole and her friend Russ (both would remain my very good friends). I'd heard that Martin Sheen was to attend the festival, and when Russ asked if I wanted to accompany them to the Indianapolis airport to pick up "Martin", I said, "Sure" - assuming that the "first name only" implied that this Martin was famous and a last name was unnecessary. It turned out to be Martin, hard-core fan flying in from England. (I'm still in touch with this non-Sheen "Martin", too.) Well, in the days that followed, my disappointment from the "Martin Mix-up" turned to elation when I discovered how well-connected my new friends were, and I found myself meeting Adeline Nall, Jimmy's high school drama teacher, and then getting a private tour of his boyhood farmhouse conducted by the aunt who raised him, Ortense Dean Winslow. I saw his motorcycle and leather motorcycle jacket, his bongo drum sitting quietly in the corner, and his childhood artwork hanging on his old bedroom walls. Very heady stuff for a young fan! (I've experienced so many strange "coincidences" in my 47 years that I'm not at all convinced this life is "real.")
Well, as the years wore on, I surprisingly lost interest in acting, and a series of spiritual episodes completely changed me and my world-view. I no longer idolize human beings, but I still recognize that James Dean was (and remains) the most imaginative, most innately gifted American actor. The direction hinted at in GIANT gives an indication of where he was pointed as an artist, and ultimately he would have emerged as a "giant" of a film director. He may have started life as a hayseed, ending it with a Turnupseed and with Life's promising highway left unexplored before him, but JAMES DEAN LIVES, both in his three films, and in these beautiful black and white photographs by the fine lensman, Dennis Stock.
Do you wish to see why the name James Dean turns up in the songs of Rock stars? (David Essex, Lou Reed, John Mellencamp, Ian Hunter, and The Eagles, to name but five.) Want to see why all the boys wanted to BE him, and all the girls wanted to BE WITH him? (As a female friend recently wrote regarding his performance in East Of Eden: "I think Dean also aroused a lot of maternal feelings with that performance. You're attracted to him, but you also want to mother him. What's a girl to do?") Well, it's all in these pages:
The Offbeat Humor: Encircled by calves and pigs, Jim sits with his bongo drum on a patch of ground on the family's farm and bangs out a "rhythm to moo and oink to."
The Bizarre Morbidity: Jimmy posing in a coffin at a Fairmount funeral home just 7 months before his corpse would be taken there.
More Bizarre Morbidity: Jim examining the chicken head held by a small, joyful girl loitering on a New York sidewalk, while the girl's older sister holds onto the leash of their disinterested dog.
The Eerily Mysterious: He sits dressed in coat and tie, reading a book in the farm's hayloft while light filtering in reveals him to be surrounded by spider web-sealed old trunks. (A dynamite piece of photography! Absolutely first-rate.)
The Classic Cool: James Dean marches through the city streets, cigarette dangling, and shoulders hunched in his overcoat against a Times Square rain.
The Ultimate Rebellion: An edgy Dean holding a gun point-blank on future president Ronald Reagan on the Hollywood set of the television play, THE DARK, DARK HOUSE.
These and so many more stellar shots - some posed and some candid - await the James Dean fan on thse pages. The decades have whittled down my once massive Dean collection to just a few portrait reproduction post cards sent to me by the late artist, Kenneth Kendall, who sculpted the actor's bust on display at The Griffith Park Observatory in L.A., and to this book of 1955 photographs by Dennis Stock. This should tell you plenty about the quality of these photos. Come and "see" the original Voice of teen angst, the red-jacketed rebel in glorious black and white.
James Dean : Fifty Years Ago.......2006-03-20
Mr. James Dean who is featured in these pictures speaks for himself and what was lost when he was taken to his final resting place in Fairmount and what might have been.
James Dean lives on.......2006-02-01
Was about time this book came out. These are some of the most beautiful JD photos. It's all I've got to say
The Finest Photo Collection on James Dean.......2005-12-07
I owned Dennis Stock's 1980s collection of photos of Dean from his Life magazine days. This books is more than a re-release; Stock has a lot more written about his brief (friendly) relationship with Dean and the affect of Dean's death. Stock included previously unreleased pictures showing more of the young star's spirit and attitude. That is what this coffee table book is about: pictures. Stock's book, combined with George Perry's biography, make for the best written and pictoral chronicle on James Dean.
Book Description
Movie buffs and beefcake fans alike will enjoy delving into Michael Ferguson’s new book IDOL WORSHIP: A Shameless Celebration of Male Beauty in the Movies, a lively, well-researched, and bawdy guide to the careers of 91 hot actors whom readers will want to take to bed…or at least rent for the night.
Customer Reviews:
a celebration of beefcake.......2007-03-13
A walk through history with some of the hottest men ever to grace the silver screen from the silent era through to the present day. Author Michael Ferguson celebrates approximately 90 Hollywood Hunks. Its not meant to be a serious biography of each star represented, rather an irreverent overview of their appeal to gay men and straight women alike.
I loved every page of it and time and time again agreed with the observations and choices.
great bring on volume 2.
Excellent.......2006-12-08
I really liked this book. As a film historian and writer and as one who has worked as a researcher for many authors, I will say that it is the only - and I mean this - the ONLY book that gives a balanced and accurate view of the highly exaggerated sex lives of some of our stars of the classic era. Ferguson seems to have gone back to the beginning of some of these stories and attempted to verify them rather than just adding on more fabrications as many books have. It's not a book for gay people necessarily, it's not a gossipy book nor written in a gossipy fashion.
A book for everyone.......2004-06-17
While at first glance this book may seem like it is only for the gay market, I have to tell you this is not so. As a hetro male who is into movies this book was everything I could hope for. Bravo to the author for the research done for this book, had to be a labor of love. Love old movies? Not me, until I read this book. Now I want to see Valentino's films. What sets this book apart from others is the authors's comments, always on target and usually funny. The author's own personal relanship with the actors and movies also makes this a great read - and every one will have someone they would rather have seen in this book - such is the joy of any list
A Labor of Love.......2004-04-25
Michael Ferguson's "Matinee Idol," subtitled "A Shameless Celebration of Male Beauty in the Movies," makes a fitting companion to Daniel and Jackson's "Bent Lens," not becuase it's about gay film, or even gays in film--it is not--but because it rewrties Hollywood history from the point of view of a gay (male) voyeur. The journey is fascinating. Along the way, Ferguson offers tantalizing insights into the fantasy side of movies, as well as into the public and private lives of the actors who make them. His choices run the gamut of hunks from Valentino to Tyrone Power, and Jan-Michael Vincent to Gael Garcia Bernal, with occasional forays into such related subjects as musclemen and porn stars. There are extra-long articles on some of Ferguson's favorites, including Matt Dillon, Keanu Reeves, and Brad Pitt, but he also takes the time to pay homage to the occasional wannabe, such as Jack Beutel and Rodney Harvey. The text has a tendency to go on too long, and Ferguson may at times appear overly obsessed with the pubic trail that leads from an actor's belly button into his speedo, but that's a minor quibble, and the kind of thing that will inevitably appeal to some readers. Worse is the writer's frequent misplacement of his modifiers (as here on Bernie Schwarz's metamorphosis into Tony Curtis: "Like virtually every other Jew in town, a name change was mandated and he became Jimmy Curtis") and his problems with parallelism (as in this iconoclastic comment regarding "Some Like It Hot": "The film has been deified as one of the greatest screen comedies ever despite not being very funny and my opinion thankfully won't diminish the love audiences and critics have for it." In addition, as in "Bent Lens," there is no index; there is, however, an appendix of sorts, which offers a credit each for a near-exhaustive list of actors, including many not treated in the main text. One criminal, and puzzling, omission, is George Nader, who was doubly interesting in that he was actually gay, in addition to being a pal of Rock Hudson's and a '50s beefcake favorite. But everyone is bound to have his/her quibbles on the point of omissions, a fact that argues, in true Hollywood fashion, for a sequel to the text. I, for one, would buy it.
ýQueer Eye view of the Movie Guysý.......2004-01-21
It's a fantastic read, a "Queer Eye view of the Movie Guys" for both guys and us gals! There are loads of interesting facts (obviously well researched), great tips on which movies your favorite guy will be found looking particularly sexy AND the book serves as a catalogue of new guys to try! If you love movie stars, gorgeous guys or an entertaining celebrity read that is actually literary, you've got to have this book. It will come in handy when you're trying to decide what video to rent next. It will be a reference book you'll want to keep next to the TV's remote in the bedroom!

The Marilyn Encyclopedia is, according to its jacket notes, "the most comprehensive book about [Marilyn Monroe's] extraordinary life and legacy ever published." This may easily be true--it is incredibly, insanely detailed. Author Adam Victor has taken every conceivable source of Marilyn information--admittedly including Internet rumors and Hollywood gossip among the more well-documented tidbits--distilled them down to alphabetical entries, and cross-referenced them to within an inch of their lives. While the casual fan can check out Marilyn's Look covers or a list of the screenwriters she worked with, hardcore devotees can look up such vital information as the name of the first restaurant she and Joe DiMaggio ate at on their honeymoon (a controversy--was it the restaurant at the Hot Springs Hotel or at the Clifton Inn?) or the name of Marilyn's poodle (Maf Honey). The meticulous cross-referencing makes The Marilyn Encyclopedia an extremely enjoyable browser's read, allowing the reader to hop from Marilyn's disdain for underwear to her working relationship with John Huston to the fact that she never had much trouble with gambling--all with the flip of a page. This encyclopedia of course contains a rich assortment of photos: posed studio portraits, pinups, and candid shots vie for space throughout the tome. Despite his obvious devotion as a fan, Victor is remarkably evenhanded in his choice of the quotes and anecdotes sprinkled throughout the book. The reader cannot help but be left with the impression that, for all her magical appeal, Monroe may well have been a trying person to deal with on a day-to-day basis. WOW! WOW! WOW! Amazing!.......2007-07-29
After reading the glowing reviews for this book, I just had to get it and see what the fuss was about. I was cynical though, and thought it was probably overrated. How wrong I was! When I went to the mail there was this huge package for me, and I wondered, what did i order that big? When I opened it I was astonished and delighted that "The Marilyn Encyclopedia" was so big. I thought, "a Marilyn book this big?! Boy, this has to have a lot of info and pics!" I was right! I've never seen a MM book like this or a celebrity book like this actually. I praise Mr. Victor for all his hard, hard work. To compile this must have been an an excruciating task (he said this book took 3 yrs to create and he had a lot of help) There's 334 pages of just info (and pics). And you might as well think if it as more than 334 pages; because if this was an average sized book it would have been 600 pages! That's why they had to make the pages so long and the book is so big. Mr. Victor did the impossible. From A-Z you will find how someone, something, or someplace relates to Marilyn Monroe!! For instance, there's "Elizabeth Taylor", "Biography", "Beauty", "Body", e.t.c, e.t.c. Basically you will get all the scoop you can possibly get on MM! With my collection of MM books, I THOUGHT I knew everything, heard all the quotes she said, all the quotes people said about her. But there's SO much more-and you can only find them in this book. If you are a MM fan/book enthusiast you really don't have a collection until you have this!! The ONLY thing that I didn't like a little was there were some great pics and a lot were small. I was like, "oooh that pic should have been bigger." But that couldn't bring me to give this book 4 stars; it's just too good for that! To sum up this book, Victor even has MM's phone number and social security number under "Numbers"! (Too bad it's of no use now) Get this book now! It is the best Marilyn Monroe book!
Most complete look at the legend.......2007-05-29
The Marilyn Encyclopedia is perhaps the most thorough look at Marilyn Monroe available. From A - Z, from her addresses, movies, favorite shops, sex life, marriages- it's all in here. An in depth look at each of her movies, including plot synopsis, reviews, & background. This book is a complete must have for any fan. Tons of pictures, rare facts, and quotes. Completely worth the price.
absolutely no real facts only real facts about marilyn in play here i am mother by nancy miracle.......2005-09-13
it seems to me they could have come up with at least her place of birth not the town but at least the state as donald spoto at least got right nancy miracle's play tells the real story and is available.
Dissapointed.......2005-04-20
i was hoping this book would contain better pictures of marilyn's most famous outfits from her movies. being a costumer
i like to have full shots, that are large enough to see details.
this book didn't have that, most pictures are small, one to two inch. with a few full page pictures thrown in. most are just head shots though. it does list what movie, or event the pictures came from and all sorts of other info. so for a refrence book it's not bad.
AMAZING!.......2003-07-15
As a rather new Marilyn fan/collector, this book is invaluable to me as a resource. It is a huge book, alphabetized and cross-referenced, covering everything from movies, music, books, and biographies to gowns, hotels, cars, cities, and family. There are also, of course, hundreds of gorgeous pictures! What I'm enjoying the most is that as I read other Marilyn books, I can fact-check and look up obscurely mentioned items to learn more, or gain perspective. An objective, fact-filled, exhaustive collection of Marilyn trivia.

Rita Hayworth: A Photographic TREASURE!!!.......2002-09-27
Rita Hayworth is one of the most beautiful and glamourous women ever to have lived. Though her life was marked by tragedy, particularly her Alzheimer's affliction and death at a relatively young age. This book, however, is mainly devoted to celebrating Rita's happier times. Her life is viewed chronologically in both popular and rare photographs. There are so many beautiful photos that it is difficult to take in all at once! My favorite pictures (and just a sampling of the pictures you will find in this book) are: Rita (when she was still Margarita) with her dark hair dancing in a beautiful ruffled dress (p.28), glamourous Rita smiling brightly while reclining on a couch (p.87), Rita clowning with Orson Welles (pg. 114), Rita getting her hair touched up (p. 119), Rita tickling her daughter Rebecca (p. 126), Rita walking solitarily on the beach (p. 140), Rita being welcomed home (p. 165), and Rita in 1981, in declining mental health, but still looking every inch a movie star. If you love Rita and her movies, do not hesitate to buy this book!!!
Va-Va-Va VOOM! Hubba-hubba! Wowzer-wowzer! Bong!.......2002-05-18
"Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective" features a zillion photographs, many never before published, of one of Hollywood's most enduring sexual icons.
The book was a labor of love for author, historian and collector Caren Roberts-Frenzel of Minneapolis, who reportedly kept pestering publishers for years to get their attention.
"But you're wrong, Rita has not been forgotten," was her mantra, as skeptical publishers elsewhere wondered aloud if a market remained for a book about one of the great beauties of the 1940s.
Caren's persistence finally paid off, resulting in one of the most luxurious "picture on every page" books ever produced, supplemented by breezy, well-written and information-packed text.
Unlike "been there, done that" books about Hayworth, this one specializes in numerous "candids," that is, unposed photos taken outside of the studio, at work, at play, on the set, whatever.
For once, here's a volume that doesn't feature the same darn publicity photos you've seen a million times for sale on the Internet or at flea markets.
The deal about Rita is man oh man, unlike sexy sirens named Grable or even Monroe, Hayworth's beauty is timeless and undated. Unless someone told you, you'd never know, for example, that her world famous pinup shot -- taken on the bed by Life Magazine photographer Bob Landry -- was shot more than 60 years ago!
The same holds true for the nearly 300 other photos that grace this book, some recaptured in all of their Technicolor glory.
Get "Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective," before it disappears! I understand only a few thousand were printed and yet the reviews in the papers and in places like People Magazine have been terrific.
I fell in love with Rita all over again!.......2002-03-19
Caren Roberts-Frenzel is the president of the Rita Hayworth Fan Club and this book is her dream project come to life. Caren's appreciation of every facet of The Love Goddess is evident on every page. It was so good to see someone who knows and cares about Rita create such a labor of love. Caren doesn't whitewash the blemishes in Rita's often tragic life but rather allows them to complete an honest and ultimately loving portrait of this gentle woman.
Like its subject, this book is breathtaking in its beauty. It contains scores of genuinely rare photos and they are a treasure. I own many books on Rita but "A Photographic Retrospective" is easily my favorite.
Beautiful Photo Tribute to Rita Hayworth!.......2002-01-24
I have collected all the books ever written about Rita Hayworth. I have to say that this is the BEST photobook I have seen to date. Who else but a Rita Hayworth fan can put their heart in such a big project and create such a lovely photo tribute to Hollywood's most glamourous movie star of the classic era. Not only is there a collection of rare photographs, but there is lots of interesting information on Rita's life, trivia and more. If you're a fan of Rita Hayworth, then this is the book you must buy! Simply beautifully done!
Excellent photographs balanced with thorough narration.......2002-01-11
When I picked up this book, I excpected it to have a good amount of photos, many of which I had already seen. But, I was hoping for a few I hadn't and a decent narrations. However, this book blew me away. I have purchased photograph-focused books on celebritites before and been disappointed by their flimsy commentary. This book does an excellent job of conecting the photos to Ms. Hayworth's life. It's not just a collection of pictures, it's a pictorial biography. Admittedly, a traditional bio would get into greater detail, but this book is a great intro to her life. Not everyone wants a tell-all book filled with intimate details. This book delivers impeccably reproduced photos and a satisfactory bio. At first I was a little put-off by the price, but I feel it was well worth it, after reading it. A great read for anyone interested in this arrestingly beautiful and glamourous woman.
Product Description
Olive Thomas was one of Hollywood's first true movie stars. Born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, in 1894, she moved to New York at age sixteen and began to pursue an acting career. By 1915, she had landed a job as one of Ziegfeld's famous "Follies" girls. Before long her beauty was discovered by Hollywood, where she quickly became one of the biggest names in motion pictures. Her marriage to film star Jack Pickford further enhanced her popularity. Olive's death by poison on September 10, 1920, created a media circus. This biography begins with Olive's birth, follows her trip to stardom, and covers in detail the circumstances surrounding her mysterious death at age 25. Rare and beautiful photographs and a complete filmography are included.

Well Worth A Read.......2007-08-24
I certainly enjoyed this book. The vicious reviewers love to hack up other people's style of writing and research. They miss the point. That being said, kudos to Vogel for her great book. Olive Thomas was a very enigmatic figure in silent movies and her tragic end worth reading about. I love how Vogel leaves the reader the chance to decide how it all really ended. The book is focused and very in depth. Really enjoyed it. It's not a long read and that's better for stars of the silent era that fans don't remember. When they are not too long, readers really do get a better fix on them. If I could give Vogel and this book more than 5 Stars I would!
Worthwhile.......2007-07-25
As being pretty much the ONLY Olive Thomas biography out there, I can't really say anything bad about it. The book is well written, and there are some very lovely pictures of Olive. But the magazine article quoting got to be too much because it was on every page.
AT LAST! Regaining an almost lost star........2007-06-12
There are so many interesting actors and actresses who have been among the most famous people and have been called great stars at their time which are now almost forgotten in the sands of time.
One of them is beautiful Olive Thomas (1894-1920)- the original Flapper-girl. Her name would probably be completely unknown had not fate provided an early death for her at the young age of 25. Yet most of her films are indeed forgotten or actually lost and have hardly been watched by anybody for more than 85 years.
This book helps to trace the life and career of the charming Follies-girl, the highly gifted movie actress and wife to Mary Pickford's little brother Jack. It gives insight into her life and tries to sketch her personality. Her mysterious death is extensively dealt with as well and you may find an answer for yourself among all the different stories offered regarding what really had happened in that fatal night in Paris when Olive Thomas met her fate.
A very well researched and well written biography with many photos and interesting anecdotes. A biography that has been overdue for decades. Now at last there is a book about this outstanding silent star. And hopefully it will help to keep her name and face from falling into oblivion or being merely remembered for her tragic early death.
Not Worth the Price.......2007-05-01
Olive Thomas is a mystery in modern times to those who are familiar with her story. She began on the Ziegfeld stage as one of the most talked about beauties. Her looks led her to the silver screen where she was hailed as the princess of Selznick Studios. She married into Hollywood royalty when she wed rambunctious Jack Pickford who eventually was the only source for clues to her demise. Thomas died at age 25 thanks to swallowing mercury bichloride pills in a Paris hotel during their second honeymoon. Whether this was a suicide, a murder, or an accident is left to history.
Also included at the end of Olive's story is a filmography for her career including synopsis, cast lists, and the status of the film today.
One major flaw with this book is that Vogel seems unfocused. There is a lot of information about Jack Pickford and Marilyn Miller, information that really has little to do with Thomas. The story jumps around chronologically and suggests many different conclusions to Thomas' death, but no solid explanation. Also, her early life is barely touched upon; her stage and screen career and early death are the focus. Granted, the information is valuable because so little is available, but the format of the book is disappointing, especially for its price. Vogel seemingly did not intend to create the definitive biography on Thomas as she often isolates her information to a time period. She references the "recent" release of The Flapper on DVD and has a fascination with translating dollar amounts into modern prices.
This book is certainly entertaining, though brief, but hardly stands as a worthy evaluation of Olive Thomas' career.
Terrific Tribute To A Forgotten Star.......2007-04-07
Olive Thomas must be thrilled that 87 years after her death there is finally such a wonderful tribute to her. This biography tells you everything you need to know about her rise to fame, her sad marriage to Jack Pickford, her mysterious final hours, and even where you can catch a glimpse of her ghost! After you have finished reading it you feel like you got to know the real Olive. Her fans won't be disappointed and classic movie buffs will love learning about this tragic star. It's an easy book to read filled with rare photos and a very detailed filmography. It's worth every penny of the price.

Book Description
Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977), an immortal of the silver screen, was perhaps the greatest comic genius the world has known. To this day his beloved creation the Tramp remains the most universal representation of humanity in the history of film. Noted film historian and silent-comedy authority Jeffrey Vance has drawn on exhaustive research and interviews with those who knew Chaplin to produce this definitive illustrated account. Composed with full access to the Chaplin family archives, the book chronicles his entire complex life story and his creative process in 500 photographs, many of them rare and recently discovered, newly printed from the original negatives especially for this volume.
Describing the appeal of the Tramp, Chaplin wrote: "This fellow is many-sided-a tramp, a gentleman, a poet, a dreamer, a lonely fellow, always hopeful of romance and adventure." The description also befits the artist himself, who endured a deprived childhood in late-Victorian London, numerous romances and four marriages, and political persecution during the anticommunist witch hunts, while leaving a legacy of 75 remarkable years of creative accomplishment. This third Abrams book by Jeffrey Vance on silent-film comedians coincides with the major international video/DVD release of newly restored Chaplin films.

Chaplin: Genius of the Cinema.......2007-02-17
I thought the photographs of Charlie Chaplin captured his hilarious personality. I learned many things I had not known about him in this very detailed book. Things about his several marriages, the money he made, the house he designed. His innerself being serious instead of his funny personality he potrayed. I actually got this book for a great friend of mine who dabbles in acting. It was very hard for me to part with it. I was happy he had a true love in his life and she felt the same way. I highly recommend it!
Amazing life of Chaplin.......2005-09-24
Charlie Chaplin apparently had one of the most intersting lives I've ever heard of. This book does a great job describing the good and the bad about Chaplin and his entire life and career in the cinematic spotlight. There are tons and tons of pictures. A must read for any Chaplin or silent film fan.
Magnificent.......2005-06-25
This is a gorgeous volume that's so much more than just a mere coffeetable book. There are 500 photos, many of them never seen before, from both Chaplin's private life and stills from his many movies, both famous pictures and lesser-known ones. It goes to show that black and white photography can be just as stunning, if not more so, than color pictures. And though it's mainly a study of the shorts and features he made over his incredibly long career, offering insights into filming techniques, storylines, cast and crew, and dates, it also has a fair amount of biographical information as well, with chapters on events such as his exile, his politics, his four marriages, and his final years. One might personally disagree with a negative or positive assessment of a certain film or short (I for example don't find 'A Woman of Paris' to be the groundbreaking fantastic masterpiece many film critics hold it up as), but there's no denying Mr. Vance really did his homework. And I too find it confusing as to why some people find it a bad thing that Mr. Vance wrote this book and other books on comedic legends from the era through collaborating with the subject's family and friends and why it's supposed to be a bad thing that this is an authorised biography. Wouldn't you rather get a more objective picture that was created with help from people who actually knew the person instead of the shoddy negative untruthful hackjob that a lot of unauthorised biographies are?
Charlie Chaplin.......2005-06-01
Charlie Chaplin's Full Filled Life
Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in April 16, 1889 in London, England to talented parents who both did well in creative arts. Charlie got his parents ability to sing and act, but he later extended his list of talents to writing, dance, production, and even sports. At age ten, his father died and was forced to take care of his ill mother.
At early age he already joined the show business and joined a group called "The Eight Lancashire Lads". As he became more and more known, he sang a motion picture and became famous and as a celebrity. At the end of his career he ended up writing four books, learned how to play several instruments, and even composed and wrote several songs. Charlie lived a long, full life, and died on Christmas Day of 1977 to being eighty-eight years old.
I have a very high recommendation on this book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired and can learned by his mistakes. If you want to be interested from the beginning to the end then I recommend this book.
Chaplin: Genius of the Cinema - a feast for the eyes.......2004-08-05
Having received this book as a gift for Xmas, I immediately packed it up into a box without so much as cracking the shrinkwrap (I moved on January 1 2004). I just unpacked the box in which this book has lain for the last 7 months! I can only state, a real pity I did not get to this box sooner! This book is an absolute feast for the eyes. Of the books Vance has done this is now my favorite. The text is crisp and the accompanying photos are incredible, culled from many sources. This is a fantastic reference for anyone with an interest in Chaplin. I must now offer big KUDOS to Manoah Bowman who worked on the photo end on this book (as well as the others). His work is superb, the images are crisp, clear and reproduced beautifully. I love the photography of this era, and his photos just make me weep, they are wonderful! I am not a Chaplin expert, but I think you can match this book with David Robinson's excellent biography and you will be pretty well covered! The days of the decadent coffee table books seems to be running dry, and I would suggest you snap this up, it's a stunner! As for the negative comments of other reviewers, I fail to understand their complaint, the is nothing wrong with a family sanctioned tome or going to the source (if one can be found) for material. I'm glad I have this book and all the others, they are rich a gorgeous and a wonderful reference for one of my favorite periods of film. My only regret will be if there are no more to come!
