4 out of 5 stars great for art/"Pocahontas" fans in general.......1998-08-24

I love flipping through this book once in a while just to be in awe of Disney animators all over again, but I agree w/ some of the other reviewers who say that there isn't enough about the actual people behind this artwork. I'd like to find out more about how the artists & voices influenced different aspects of the story, reacted to deadlines, etc. too--but the art almost makes up for it. The book also provides some more insight into the personalities of the characters in "Pocahontas," which I found enlightening. Overall, it's a beautiful accompaniment to the movie, and very inspiring as well--makes me want to learn how to draw a little better.

5 out of 5 stars A book as beautiful as its main character.......1997-12-27

The art of Pocahontas is, to my mind, one of the most beautiful books about animation art. Its composition following the making of the film step by step helps the reader to understand how a huge production such as Pocahontas is made and all the production aeras are represented. The pictures taken from the film and the artist's sketches shown in it are so great they could make anyone that did not like the design of Pocahontas ( and god knows they are a lot in France ) loves it. The only thing that could be improved is about photos of the artists in their work environment, there should be more.

4 out of 5 stars Weak parts, but worth taking a look at........1997-11-30

The only thing holding this book together is the easy way it flows. In the tradition of other Disney "Making of..." books, it follows the format of each animation process from concept to script to storyboard to animation. Its interesting, but at times bogs down some nice visuals. Not all the visuals are great, though. The pre-production art seems weak and cliche like the drawings of pilgrims and Indians you remember as a kid. Only in the animation chapters does it pick up, particularly the work of Glen Keane. As chief animator of the title character, his storyboards and animation seem the most inspired and studied. Other character designs seem less bold against Disney's first eco-feminist heroine who paved the way for post-feminist heroines like Esmeralda from Hunchback and Meg from Hercules. The book not unnique in its execution or format, but its worth taking a look at to compare with other films and books and to see the evolution of the thought process of great Disney animators like Keane and Ruben Aquino. And of course it has its share of Disney we-are-doing-this-and-no-one-else-can attitude.

5 out of 5 stars Very beautiful!.......1997-11-26

First of all, I assume that these reviews are supposed to refer to the large hardcover edition, which was published in 1995, and not the smaller 1996 edition. The large one is gorgeous, allowing a look into the world of how the artists develop a film from start to finish. Some of the concept art is so beautiful that you wonder why it didn't make it into the film. My only gripe with this book is that, like Rebello's other books, it deals almost entirely with the visual aspect of the films and, although it talks about how songs developed the movie (the Colors of the Wind section is especially well done), what about the voices? In The Art of Animation: From Mickey Mouse to Beauty and the Beast, descriptions and photos are included of the actors who voiced the characters. While you might say that this sort of thing doesn't belong in an "Art of" book, I think it does, because the actor who voices a character often has a tremendous influence on the visual development of that character. For example, Belle in Beauty and the Beast would not have had the lock of hair that kept falling into her face - an endearing gesture that helped make her more real to the audience - if Paige O'Hara, her voice, had not had it first. The Art of Pocahontas would be perfect if it offered similar insights. But it's definitely worth reading or just looking at, to bask in the sheer beauty of the artwork.

5 out of 5 stars Miniature Poachontas Book is Big on Color and Information.......1997-03-06

Don't let the small size of "The Art of Pocahontas"fool you; the authors have crammed the 5.5" by 4.5" book with loads of colorful artwork and interesting insights into the recent Disney masterpiece.

"The Art of Pocahontas" traces the creation of the film from conception to completion, including wonderful reproductions of concept sketches, background paintings, layout drawings and final animation art. The 189 pages of this small volume contain over 400 color and black-and-white illustrations.

The text was written by Stephen Rebello, an editor of "Movieline" and author of "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of 'Psycho.'" He provides many insights into the collaborative and creative process behind the making of "Pocahontas."

Even though "The Art of Pocahontas" is an easy read--it takes less than an hour or two to read from cover to cover--the book provides plenty for fans of animation to contemplate. Much of the "behind the scene

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed though!!.......2002-04-08

The book is not bad, but not really as good as I expected. After having read the extraordinary book "The illussion of life", I wanted more from the same drawer. I picked the villains book.
In the beginning Frank'n'Ollie explain why they did the book, and apparently it was made on command, I couldn't help thinking about that when I read it. The chapters in the book are very short, and there is too little information about how they decided to make their characters as they turned out. Each chapter begins with an (Too long) introduction of the characters role in the film. Of course you can not expect everybody to have seen every disney film that exists, but too much space in the book is used to explain things you already know if you've seen the films.
I would have prefered to know more about how the animators felt about their characters and how they developed the personalities, for instance the thin line of making the beast in "Beauty and the Beast" looking like a beast that you could still end up having feelings for. I would like to have seen more development drawings and sketches and even some animation continuity with some good examples of change in expression of the villains as well.
Some times you read about villains that actually ain't villains. The bear in "Fox and a hound" is actually no villain because it is just following natural instincts, but how about Chief, the big old dog in the movie, nothing about him? A book that is not deep enough. but still not bad. Guess I still shouldn't have read it after just finishing "Illussion of life".

5 out of 5 stars Johnston and Thomas Together Again!.......2000-02-04

Anything by these two wonderful authors and amazing animators should be a must in anyone's collection. Yet, I am baffled that all of their books are currently out of print. I am sure one will not have trouble looking at a used bookstore for a copy of this. This book deals precisely with what the title says: The Disney Villians. In their usual classic and lucid style, the authors discuss the troubles they ran while devising a villian. One that is wicked, yet appealing to the audience. Going through their catalog of movies from Snow White to Aladdin, they discuss in detail what a villian is all about, and how the villian relates to the story, style and main character of each film. Whether one should be more realistic, or have harder edges, or what kind of mannerisms will this villian have. Highly reccomended for the animator and artist, as well as the Disney book lover as these are presented so well. For the enthuseist, which I also own, there is also a more expensive version of this book, hardcover with a slipcase, signed by each of the authors and a print of the filmstrip from Snow White.

5 out of 5 stars GET IT when you can..........1999-05-14

Why did they do it? Frank and Ollie wanted to give a thorough insight into the making of believable, memorable animated characters. For all to learn from... and they did just that! Another MUST-HAVE from the makers of some of this worlds most entertaining animation.

4 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read For Any Disney Fan!.......1998-07-11

Who better to bring us the history of the villain in Disney films than two people responsible for the creation of so many of them? Ollie Johnson and Frank Thomas' remarkable survey of the history of bad guys begins with the obligatory history of Disney animation and proceeds to describe all of the villains created from the earliest cartoon shorts to Aladdin. Concept drawings, poster art and stills from the film make up the many illustrations and each film is described along with interesting information on each villain discussed. The one drawback - an obvious one when dealing with so prolific a studio - is the fact that this book cuts off at Aladdin, missing the many sinister villains that followed, notably Scar, and Hades.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2003-06-10

This book contains hundreds of useless and fun trivia questions about the older (and some of they newer) Disney characters, films, shorts and attractions. From `Can you name Daisy Duck's three nieces' to `What was Mickey's Starland originally called when it opened in 1988', this book has enough easy trivia mixed within the very picky, unusual facts to keep any type of Disney fan entertained.

The book is also organised very well, with the index listing the character's name, the movie or the attraction. So, want to find questions on Peter Pan? Check out page 57. How about Walt Disney? Page 171 for you!

And of course trivia books are always interactive - one game I played with my little ones was to ask them the questions for a particular movie and then watch that movie so they could find the answers they missed.

Great fun for the family!

5 out of 5 stars A SPIRITED TRIBUTE TO A DISNEY CLASSIC.......2006-07-18

This book is a must read for ALL ages and ANYONE interested in Disney theme park attractions around the globe. Any Disney fan knows that the Imagineers are very particular about what is revealed to the general public in terms of how they make their Disney 'magic' and I was pleasantly surprised (being an avid Disney fan myself) by the research that went into the making of this book and the amount of knowledge shared with the reader - it DOES in fact reveal some secrets of the mansion and never before seen history of the making of the attraction. (It confirms and dispels some rumors about the attraction once and for all too!) A pattern of discussion is followed throughout the book as you are verbally walked through the mansion's corridors and rooms. Surrell consistently covers the Haunted Mansion in a logical order (Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris) in every chapter. He takes the subject matter full circle by including information about how the attraction was translated to the big screen, and gives the reader insight to how decisions were made pertaining to set design, costume design, and casting for the movie of the same name. If you want an intelligent, thorough and enjoyable read about a classic Disney attraction, and especially an insight to the magic that is Imagineering, this is a MUST READ!

1 out of 5 stars Weak information...a promo for the ride and the movie.......2006-07-10

You buy this book thinking it's a great "behind-the-scenes" resource, but it's not. Yes, there is some background information, but the book skips confusingly from park to park, and offers very little technical information on the special effects. The photos are all standard Disney promotional stuff...this book tells you what Disney wants you to know, and nothing else.

Go to doombuggies.com for a much better treatment of this classic ride.

Lots o' great info on both the Ride @ the Disney Theme Parks + the Movie [which I loath - sorry but the Haunted Mansion wasn't meant to be made into a 2 hour episode of the Fresh Prince of Bellaire, mmmkay ?] + the Haunted Mansion Holiday ....

Future editions should drop all reference to the Movie, then spend more time on the Haunted Mansion Holiday [Nightmare Before Christmas Holiday makeover] + recent "changes" that occured in 2006 [I'd make it a 5 star if they did that] ....

If you don't want to read the book, please buy it for the artwork

2 out of 5 stars Poorly Indexed. Lots of Information on Non-Disney Shows.......2005-09-08

This is one of those books that I bought sight unseen over the internet. I don't think I would have bought it if I had a chance to have looked at it first.

This is one of those encyclopedia books that give you the name of a show, its air date and what seems like the TV Guide description of what was in the show. I figured that it would begin with the Disneyland TV series and branch out to the Wonderful World of Disney that I watched in the 70s. Well, it kind of does that and kind of not. It includes a chapter on Disney Specials (organized alphabetically by the name of the show). Then it has a chapter about repeating series, then the Mickey Mouse Club, then a chapter about Zorro, etc. The Disneyland shows are in there and so are the Wonderful World of Disney shows, but again, they are listed alphabetically by the title of each show. So, you wind up having a show from the 90's listed next to a show from the 50's. I suppose its one way of doing things, but its not what I expected. I thought I'd get to see which episode was shown on day one and then the rest in a chronological approach. It will be very difficult to identify the episodes that I saw growing up because of the way the shows are organized.

Indexing was a disappointment, but what I really don't understand is the inclusion of what appears to be ABC's complete line-up from the time Eisner took over Disney until the book was published. I really didn't expect to see complete information about the "Golden Girls" series in a book called "The Wonderful World of Disney." Further the last 100 to 150 pages is just a listing of production people (like you would see shown in the credits of an episode - in small print) for each of the episodes mentioned in the book. If you knock out the ABC 90s lineup and the production credits, you've knocked out about 1/2 of the book.

Substantively, the Disney-program related stuff is kind of weak -- like I said, sort of a TV Guide synopsis -- but there are little bits of trivia listed for numerous episodes and that's nice. Again, however, indexing makes the book suffer. For example, the movie Johnny Tremain was broken down into segments when shown on TV with each episode having a different title, "e.g., The Shot Heard Round the Word" and "The Boston Tea Party." Well, the Boston episode is found in the B's and the Shot episode is way over in the S's. This organization didn't make a lot of sense to me. Also there is some information that is just wrong. For example, it lists the Shaggy D.A. (from the mid 70s) as being shown in a colorized format in a TV episode. Of course, the movie was filmed in Color.

I haven't spent a whole lot of time with the book, and there appears to be some good information in it (there are a number of pages or regular historical prose dealing with Walt's getting into TV, the Mickey Mouse Club and Zorro) but overall, the book is disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Sunday Nights are for families!.......2005-03-23

This book is a comprehensive history of Disney on television, with "The Wonderful World of Disney" anthology show as the centerpiece. As a kid I grew up watching Uncle Walt every Sunday night, on "The Wonderful World of Disney". Back then we were not bombarded with 24 hour cable, satellite, vcr, dvd, video games,... We had 4 channels to choose from, and even those rarely had anything watchable for kids. And as a result no kid missed Sunday nights with Walt Disney. He always had something exciting on, adventure, historical stories, action, cartoons, animal fare, you name it! I sat in front of the tube mesmerized with my dinner on a TV tray, the only night my mom let me eat in front of the TV. Parents could always trust Walt Disney to give us wholesome entertainment. Now we have grown up, and the old television series is gone but not forgotten as long as you have this book.

There are hundreds of books on Disney's animated fare, but scant few have been written on their wonderful treasure trove of live action films, much less their material created specifically for television. There are books on specific shows, but none yet that bring them all together like this. Bill Cotter has done what no one else has attempted, to create a list of every single episode for every television show ever made: it's actors, plotline, trivia, air dates and rerun dates for every single show Disney ever made up to the date of publication. And he has done a fine job when you consider there are hundreds of episodes, aired 52 weeks a year, for 29 years. He takes the time to tell you if the episode was theatrically released first or televised first, overseas or domestic, if it was a feature that was edited not a movie or edited from a movie for TV, and even if it aired or released in a different name. He even lets you know what Disney did with the episode in the European market.

This book has been a wonderful resource to assist me in finding old episodes that I can't remember the name for but vividly remember the story, confirming that the child actors are the famous persons I see in the movies now, or checking to see which video I want to track down next. Very comprehensive at 628 pages. Not a ton of pictures, but some good ones. Some books on Disney use too many pictures as a crutch for lacking content, but not this one. The back of the book has a massive appendix with tons of information on every episode, such as the writer, director, producer, actors, original story material source, screenplay writer, composers, visual effects, and so on... basically the entire credits for every episode are listed here.

But it doesn't end there, he lists every episode of Mickey Mouse Club, the New Mickey Mouse Club and their respective serials; Zorro; Specials; and special releases of themovies to TV. Also has obscure limited series forgotten by time like Small & Frye, Zorro and Son, Meet Me at Disneyland, Gun Shy, or Wildside. The only source I can find for the many specials, series, and films of the Disney Channel. Saturday Mornings and Disney Afternoons animation is here like DuckTales, Wuzzles, Gummi Bears, Winnie the Pooh, Chp 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers, Tale Spin, Bonkers, Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Timon & Pumba, Gargoyles, and all the rest. And the "non-Disney" labeled stuff they made like Blossom, Home Improvement, Golden Girls, Nurses, Empty Nest, Boy Meets World, The Torkelsons, Dinosaurs, and all the other syndicated series from Touchstone Television. It even lists the unaired episodes!

The author of this book chose to include other shows that are so-called "not Disney", the Touchstone shows like the "Golden Girls". You have to remember that Disney Studios bought ABC Television, and prior to that was producing television medium at the Florida studio for the networks that did not have the Disney name plastered all over it, but was still made by the Disney company. They were just trying to be completist, and you get more information as a consumer at no extra cost. I myself am not interested in many of those Touchstone shows so I simply skipped that part of the book, no harm done there. Frankly, there is no other book at this time that lists every single episode of the legacy of Walt in his Wonderful World of Disney show. Trust me, this book is a treat for any Disney TV fan.

A reviewer felt like some of the descriptions of each episode were too short, but there were 29 years of episodes on 3 different networks for the anthology show alone to cover in the book, and I feel that under the circumstances they did very well with a paragraph or two on each episode. The book is already 628 pages long, and is much bigger than a large dictionary. Any more and it would honestly be unmanagable.

Since it is a history book first and foremost, the shows are listed from the oldest shows to the newest. Then within each show, such as Zorro, they list the episodes in the order they were aired. The exception is "The Wonderful World of Disney" which is done alphabetically, since so many of those episodes played multiple times over the years, or were mutli-part episodes, but most of all because the fans remember them by name but not neccesarily by air date. It really does make it easier this way. It lists episodes by the title name, which in a multi-part show like "Johnny Tremain" can get confusing at first. But the book usually tells you in one listing the names of the other parts of the story so you can track them down. For example on page 97 it begins with the main title Davy Crockett, then lists the 5 episode names of the original series so you can look them up by name. Then it list the 5 episodes from the 1988 remake series. It does the same with Elfego Baca, Gallagher, and other shows and even movies that were renamed as episodes after editing. The layout of the book takes a little extra effort to understand at first, but over time I have come to appreicate it very much and frankly would not change it.

This is a great resource for info on theatrical releases and featurettes too since most aired on the show sooner or later. I strongly reccommend this book to any Disney fan or historian. It is one of the most valuable reference books in my Disney collection of over 100 books.

Sadly the original Disney anthology shows have seen almost no attention from the studio by way of DVD release, and most episodes on VHS were printed in the 1980's. There are a number of episodes from the show still available "used" on VHS, simply do a search at Amazon under, "The Wonderful World of Disney". And if you use this book like I did you can find almost half of the Disney episodes ever made were released on VHS back in the '80s under their original episode titles. Buy them while you still can. I highly reccommend this hugely important reference to Disney television.

4 out of 5 stars Great addition to Disney lovers' book shelf.......2000-03-03

The labour the author has put into this comprehensive work of reference is clearly reflected in its 400 pages. Being both a lover of Disney in general, and a movie critic in particular, I keep this work within reach to check names as they appear on the credits or in case I want to find the title to a certain episode. On the downside, I really missed the general names index, but maybe that's just the librarian inside of me, for I realize that an index like that would take up a second volume (but a second volume I would buy!).

Book Description

Cars is the story of Lightning McQueen, a hot-shot stock car who takes a wrong turn on the way to the most important race in his career. What will he find along the way? The book retells the story from the movie and comes with a removable movie projector with ten picture disks that let readers project colorful images of action scenes from the movie on the wall. The projector also comes with its own built-in reading light, so the book can be read even when the lights are dimmed!

3 out of 5 stars Cars Movie Theater Book .......2007-06-30

It's a great concept for a book and projector. The images when best focused are very small and that is a downside. It is hard to see the slide numbers when the images are projected on the wall. When the projector is moved back, the picture gets larger, but it is still difficult to get it into full focus.

3 out of 5 stars fun toy.......2007-05-19

I bought this for my three year old nephew. He had a ball, we had to ration his usage! He loved the story of the cars and enjoyed especially using the projector. Works well!

5 out of 5 stars Coffee Table Treasure.......2004-11-09

Not to be confused with the usual "Disney" kiddie books,
this beauty is chock full of beautiful artwork that deserves
a place in your living room .. A+

4 out of 5 stars Art good - text bad.......2001-11-09

Serious students of Disney animation will not be disappointed by "The Art of Mulan". This book has many fine pictures of original art of various types used to make the film - from concept pictures to storyboards to close to the final product. I enjoy all of the "Art of ..." books, despite the high price, so I can try my hand at drawing and painting some material similar to the Disney animators. However, the text goes into more detail about their journey in China, rather than the real "making of" type text I expect. That was the only thing that kept me from giving this book five stars. Art students would love this for a gift...

5 out of 5 stars I'm proud to own it!.......2001-06-29

This is a book we're proud to own. Jeff Kurtti is to be congratulated on bringing together the art and history of the making of a Disney,s masterpiece, MULAN. Beautifully printed on quality paper. To turn the page is to uncover a treasure! I am sure Disney,s films were never been so wonderfully showed in a book.Unfortunately, the price makes the book an expensive tool for many young people beginning a career.A book like this deserves to be read and enjoyed by everyone. But even with that one criticism, this book is a MUST HAVE.

5 out of 5 stars Holds a special place on my shelf..........2001-06-13

I have long studied, followed, and enjoyed Disney animation, and the film "Mulan" certainly did not disappoint me. So, when I set out to buy this book upon its initial publishing, I was fairly certain I would like it. I was wrong, I loved it!

Jeff Kurtti does an excellent job scribing the background for the making of this feature, and he has quickly established himself as the preeminent writer for Disney books of this nature. I was fortunate to meet and speak with Mr. Kurtti during my wonderful participation at the Mulan Animation Experience held at the Disney Insitute in the summer of 1998, and he comes off as an "ultimate Disney fan". His writing conveys this as well, but in a more polished, informative nature. He really had a good time researching this book, and it shows!

But, with all due respect to Mr. Kurtti, this book isn't called the "Art of Mulan" for nothing. The typical Disney quality is abundant in every frame of artwork within the book, and the sheer volume of development and concept sketches is a real treat. Having also met the film's directors, many of the animators, storyboard artists, etc. at the '98 event (put together, by the way, by Mr. Larry Lauria, a quality individual in the animation industry) I have had the luxury of being exposed to many of the background elements during the development of this film. This book, however, served as a wonderful companion piece to that experience, and also communicates much of the same information and emotion felt at that event. It is that thorough and the result of another top-notch Hyperion production.

Certainly, if you like the movie and/or appreciate Disney animation (or the growing library of "Art of..." books), then this one should be in your collection. Mr. Kurtti, Disney, and Hyperion have "done honour to us all".
