5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2006-11-17

A thoughroughly enjoyable, mesmerizing, collection of a soldier's WWI remembrances. Somehow manages to be more than the sum of its plainly told, shy, politically incorrect, wars is hell but you get used to it parts. It ends up assembling and describing bit by bit the remarkable character of the author.

Also notable to me for how it reaches across 70 years to contrast how we've changed as a people. For example, I don't think this book would be published as written today. The editor would have probably added more polish, removed some of the namecalling and stereotyping and would have thus diminished the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject.......2006-09-26

Having read a lot of WWI books and books on sniping this one takes the cake. It's written in the autobiographical tradition of Teddy Roosevelt and will impress the old and young alike with its vivid imagery and colorful prose. Great read.

3 out of 5 stars Straight talking.......2006-02-27

As a rifle shooter with a historical interest i bought this book. If your looking for an overly dramatic or gruesome account of life in the first world war trenches dont by this book. From what i can tell it is a written collection of memories by the author. These memories are written in a matter of fact, straight talking way which does not hide the authors zealous approach to his task of being a soldier.

Although at times slightly rambling i found this an interesting read and at times amuzing. A good reference if you are interested in rifle shooting or battle history.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-03-30

It might not be written in perfect English, and it's not always politically correct, but it's definitely always enjoyable.

You get the whole WWI experience from the author's point of view, including enough "war stories" to satisfy any reader.

McBride includes technical details, anecdotes, and just good old story telling, in this tale of a machine gunner / rifleman in the Great War.

5 out of 5 stars Current in todays wars.......2004-12-19

I took a copy of this book and passed it out to the sharp shooters in my unit in desert storm. I know several USMC snipers that had read it. It is as valuable today as it was in WWI. A no holds barred book about killing.

He tests 90 types of 22 long rifle ammo, 5 types of shorts, 19 types WMR ammo, one type of 17 Aguila, 3 types of 17M2, 8 types of 17HRM, a chapter on chambers, and a chapter on barrel tuners.

This book is obviously a labor of love.
If I were to assign a technician and technical writer to the task of compiling this data and writing this book, I would estimate the cost to be a few hundred thousand dollars and the schedule to be a few years. That is more money than this book will ever make. The difference is John Boelter's gift to the readers. Thank you, John.

5 out of 5 stars Hero of the Revolution in the South.......2007-07-12

A great read. Could have been titled The Wagon Master. It was the efforts of troops led by people like Morgan that held off the British long enough for Greene to 'succeed' and for the French fleet to arrive.

3 out of 5 stars Captures Morgan's Personality, but...........2006-09-13

Higginbotham does a credible job of revealing Morgan's personality, character and genius as a military leader, particularly since there is little if anything known about Morgan before he appears in Winschester VA at the age of 18. The book reads fairly easily and describes the elements of the Revolution's Southern Campaign in which Morgan participated, but Higganbotham seems to have a penchant for defending Horatio Gates in a positive light I have not seen before. He seems to gloss over most of Gates's personality flaws and military errors to render him more effective than he probably was. This treatment of Gates raises the issue that face many biographers; i.e. they take a liking (or disliking)to a character and sometimes use literary license to make their points. This is the first biography I've read on Daniel Morgan, who is portrayed as a classic American hero, rising from nowhere to have a major impact on history. My interpretation of Higginbotham's characterization has me believing that without Morgan the Revolution may have been lost because Morgan's victory at the Cowpens effectively set the stage for Nathaneal Greene to later drive Cornwallis from South Carolina to Yorktown where Washington and the French conducted the final battle of the war. Stuff I love to read and talk about: unheralded heroes and certainly Morgan appears to be one of the most important in America's fight for freedom. But I have to wonder whether Higginbotham has skewed the facts about Morgan as he seemed to do with Gates. I hope not.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource on an Underrated Patriot.......2006-06-21

One can hardly pick up a book that has anything to do with the Revolutionary War without reading something ranging from a tidbit to several chapters on General Daniel Morgan. The significance Morgan played in the war for American independence cannot be overstated. And yet, only two biographies have been published on this heroic figure that played such an integral part in American history. This book DANIEL MORGAN: REVOLUTIONARY RIFLEMAN, by Don Higginbotham, being one of them.

It borders on travesty that General Morgan is a virtual unknown in American society and certainly unknown among anyone lacking basic knowledge of American history. Higginbotham accurately portrays Morgan as a man among men; a portrait of the rugged individualism that characterized so many of our founding generation.

Morgan, perhaps as much as Washington himself, I believe, had as much to do with winning the war for independence as any single individual. Many might disagree with that statement, but consider the outcome if Cornwallis' southern campaign had been successful. Consider the consequences if the southern revolutionary army had been annihilated. It is more than likely that there would have been a different outcome at Yorktown had it not been for the commanding leadership and battle tactics of the "Old Wagoner". It can certainly be argued that Morgan's actions at Cowpens, where he soundly gave Tarleton's light infantry a `Devil of a Whoopin', turned the tide in the south. And though he missed action at Guilford Courthouse due to illness, his same battle tactics were employed with success.

This is not one of the best books you will ever read, but considering the lack of choices on Morgan, this is a must read for knowledge on the General's life and accomplishments. Perhaps in the near future, one of today's acclaimed historians will render an updated version, but until then, put Higginbotham's book on your reading list. The book is brief, but concise, and will lend a candid look at a somewhat forgotten, and often overlooked American hero.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2004-11-17

A terrific telling of one of America's first heroes. Dan Morgan and his kind are the ones who helped birth America. Higginbotham's writing is slightly dry, but the content more than makes up for it.

A simply outstanding story!

5 out of 5 stars Dan the Man: Frontiersman, Patriot, Tactition, Leader.......2003-07-02

Dan Morgan epitomizes the rough-and-ready individualist who made America.

A frontiersman from the Shennandoah Valley, Morgan knew a hard early life that steeled him for the physical challenges of his Revolutionary War service. A wagoneer in Gen. Braddock's Expedition, Morgan endured 400 lashes after tangling with a British soldier (he claimed only 399 and loved to regale listeners with the fact that he still owed the British one miscounted lash).

His physical endurance and prowess was combined with the ability to lead men and a superior ability to plan and manage battlefield tactics. He has been described as one of the Revolution's best battlefield commanders and this book gives plenty of examples to support that claim.

Morgan's service to our Republic was remarkable. Although a failure, his part in the Quebec expedition helped make possible one of the most grueling campaigns military history. Traveling overland through the spine of backwoods Maine, Morgan helped lead outnumbered American forces to a wintry showdown that could have produced a fourteenth colony in revolt against the Crown. In fact, Morgan stood at the moment of victory; had his desire to keep driving into the city after breaching its under-defended backside been followed, the city could have been captured. As it was, hesitancy on the part of other American commanders led to defeat and Morgan's capture. He had to endure a period of imprisonment until paroled.

That parole was a costly one for the British. It allowed Morgan, when exchanged, to play his decisive roles at Saratoga and Cowpens.

Morgan's ability to lead riflemen and read the battlefield was crucial to Gate's success at Saratoga (which led to French recognition, support and the resources to chance complete independence). Morgan's later brilliance at Cowpens, site of the famed double envelopment of Tarleton's British Legion, led to the series of events that ended with Cornwallis being pinned against the James at Yorktown. Cowpens, arguably the most decisive American victory of the war, was brilliant. Morgan, as the American commander, threaded strategic understanding, leadership (he had to persuade bayonetless American militia that they had a crucial role to fulfill in the battle and would be allowed to retire once fulfilling it), battlefield planning and tactical control to produce a victory that is rightly studied to this day.

A character, Morgan is one of the men who made the Revolution a success. This highly readable account develops the man, his character and his military personae in introducing the modern reader to a historic figure who needs to be more widely appreciated for his great effect on the success of our founding.

Book Description

Intrigued by the mystique and challenge of the Marine Corps, eighteen-year-old Wesley Fox enlisted in the summer of 1950, shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War. He saw action with the First Marine Division in Korea and was wounded in 1951. After Korea, Fox advanced steadily in the enlisted ranks, reaching the rank of first sergeant, and, early in the Vietnam War, he received an appointment as second lieutenant. While serving as a rifle company commander with the Third Marine Division in 1969, he was twice wounded in a vicious battle during Operation Dewey Canyon. Early in this battle, every member of the company’s command staff was either wounded or killed. In an all-or-nothing effort led by First Lieutenant Fox, his company repulsed the attack of a much larger enemy force and then counterattacked with devastating results. “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty,” Fox received the Medal of Honor, which President Richard Nixon presented to him at the White House. Despite the personal sacrifice and frequent danger, Fox resolutely embraced the ethos of the Marine Corps, risking his life on numerous occasions and emerging as a leader in one of the most respected and feared fighting organizations in the world. Readers interested in U.S. military history from the second half of the twentieth century, in the Marine Corps, and in inspiring tales of personal achievement will find plenty of each in Fox’s extraordinary memoir.

4 out of 5 stars Marine Rifleman: Forty-three years in the Corps.......2007-05-12

Recommended reading for all Marines and Wannabees which includes just about everybody.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read on leadership.......2006-07-13

Col. Fox's memoir is as educational as it is entertaining. This is a must-read book on leadership, which drives home two essential principles: the leader must set the example and the leader must look out for the welfare of subordinates (which includes correcting them or even steering them into better paths, if they don't fit the Marine mold). And he does it in an entertaining style. It's rare to find someone with his experience who is also such a fine writer.

Though he holds the Medal of Honor, Col. Fox isn't at all full of himself. He's not afraid to say when he made mistakes, or when the system made mistakes. I found myself both wishing I'd served under Fox, and grateful I didn't, because I'm not sure I could have measured up to his very high standards. We should all be eternally thankful for Americans of this caliber.

Give this book to the young man or woman thinking of joining the Corps.

5 out of 5 stars Pass this book on to others!.......2005-04-13

I gave "Marine Rifleman" to my 17-year-old son last week, not to have him again revisit my Marine Corps "era" through this terrific book, but to have him exposed to these thoughts:

-- "Normal" people can have a successful military career. And Marines are not cold-blooded killers to begin with, nor trained as such.
-- Military careers can co-exist with a family lifestyle. The Fox family is a wonderful example.
-- We owe a considerable debt of gratitude to those who have served, especially in combat situations. Our comfortable life is largely due to the sacrifices of thousands of military personnel since 1900. Many of these sacrifices are short of serious wounds or death, but are not experienced by or even known to the public-at-large.
-- You can lead AND command without losing respect for your subordinates (very important today!!!), or having them lose respect for you.

Does "Marine Rifleman" bring out these lessons? You bet it does. Get the book, read it, pass it on to others. The reader does not have to be Marine-familiar. It will be one of their better reads from the bewildering choices in the bookstores. Especially for young people. Let them experience the personal growth of this man Fox as he maintains his spirit and integrity through a demanding career.

4 out of 5 stars One Marine's Amazing Journey Through the Ranks.......2004-09-18

Every Marine that has served can easily tell you about the types of people in the Corps. There are the people who do their job and are just waiting to get out, the less than desirable bottom "10%" and then guys like Wesly Fox: the super-hardcore, gungy types who eat and sleep Marine Corps and epitomize the professionalism and dedication of the modern warrior. Col. Fox spent 43 year in, making it to 1st Sergeant before being commissioned and ultimately obtaining his bird. Many field grade officers today remember him as the CO of OCS, and his reputation carries his name throughout the Corps, even today, a decade since his retirement. Gungy Marines only come along maybe once a year in a unit, and Marines like Foxonly come along once in a great while.

The book is written by the author, and goes from chapter to chapter through each rank and his experiences in Korea, Vietnam, and all of his assignments (e.g. drill instructor, recruiter, MSG, etc.); He did it all. The prose is not extremely well written or memorable so much as the content of his story is remarkable. He seems to be a very warm and realistic man. There are almost no political views in the book, or rants about government or red tape, just his perspectives on the COrps and how it changed over 3 years. A great read, I feel it should be added to the Commandant's reading list.

5 out of 5 stars Vividly written personal memoir of WWII.......2006-09-01

This is one of the best personal memoirs of World War II that I have read. The author describes combat as seen through the eyes of an American GI artist.

As you read, you will see the glint off the edge of a helmet, feel the ground shake from a nearby shell, and hear the engine of a tank drown out the sound of explosions.

The book offers a stark view of combat during the last days of war in Germany. You will meet the wounded 16-year-old German prisoner who couldn't stop crying. Some of his American captors felt sorry for the boy and plied him with K rations.

You will read about the German medic that the author wounded with a hand grenade. The GIs treated the medic as one of their own when they found grateful letters in his pocket written by captured GIs that he had aided.

Pencil drawings of soldiers accompany the text. The author drew many of these while he was at the front. He protected them in a cardboard mortar tube that he carried wherever he went. Drawing his fellow GIs was his way of paying tribute to them.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch War Story.......2006-07-26

This is what a military memoir should be - exciting, gripping and totally real. Not only was the author there, but he puts the reader there too, right in the foxhole with him, cold, wet and miserable, and living the terror, with blackened frozen bodies poking up through the snow. War stories do not get any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Best First Hand Account.......2005-08-27

I have read numerous first hand accounts of World War 2, from both sides, and this was the best. The book was so naturally written and Mr. Foley's graphic descriptions actually made me feel like I was in the Foxhole with him. His story was very moving. Mr. Foley and his generation who risked and gave their lives are truly my hero's. They gave up their innocence so others might be free. Thank you Mr. Foley for what you did, and thank you to the rest of the 94th Infantry division!

5 out of 5 stars Extra Special Personal Memoir........2005-05-24

Extra Special Personal Memoir.
"Visions From A Foxhole" by William A. Foley, Jr. Subtitled "A rifleman In Patton's Ghost Corps". Ballantine Books, NY 2003.
This is the story of a young man, seeking to find himself, while at the same time he is defending his country. His father had served in world War I, and William A. Foley, Jr., is not only learning about himself during his time in the European Theatre of Operations but also about his father's experience in the First World War. Foley, Jr., as a lower ranking soldier, is part of the 94th Infantry Division which went through some heavy fighting, for example, in the Ruhr, crossing the Saar River and then crossing the Rhine River. His written personal recollections are made all the more vivid by his drawings.
Almost for relief, Foley had begun to draw, in pencil on paper, the scenes of war, as he experienced them He realized that he had more talent than most people, so he began to accumulate and protect his drawings from action to action, town to town, river to river. Despite dunkings in rivers, shellings, winter weather and so much more, the author saved most of his drawings and presented a selection in this book. These contemporary drawings confirm the harshness of the battle. The drawings combined with his written words makes this an extra special personal memoir. The author also has a web site, tied in with the title of the book.

Just as an aside, my Professor in Historiography once stated that "Spell checker" has ruined many an editor. On page 139, the book states that the author "...sneaked a peak {sic}"... while in other pages of the book, he was sneaking a "peek", the proper spelling for looking discretely. On page 209, the Greek letter "Pi" appears before the date "16 March". Spell Checker ignores Greek Letters. Don`t let this distract from your enjoyment of this excellent book. ...

5 out of 5 stars A,true picture of my war.......2005-05-14

My name is Russell Bryant. I was a rifleman B company, 376th regiment, 94th division at the same time as Mr Foley. My war didn't last as long as Foley's as I was seriously wounded in a boat trying to cross the Saar river on 23 February, l945. I saw action around Sinz, took part in the marching fire attack that took Banholz Woods and the attack on the far end of Munzingen Ridge. Mr Foley's drawings more accurately portray the faces and eyes of front line riflemen than any that I have seen. His narrative descriptions of war seem to me to be very accurate. I was deeply moved as I read and re-read the book. I
find ilt strange that some who claim to have their own very unusual experiences find it necessary to criticize some of Foley's experiences. It was my experience that the "unusual" in combat is really the usual. I have given copies of the book to many people who are very interested in "our war" every single one of them expressed their praises. Thankfully, Mr. Foley did not attempt to write a broad "history" of WW11. We have many of those with their broad views and sweeping generalities. Thank you Bill Foley for showing the true story of individuals who literally "ground" out the war.

Davy Crockett Aileen Wells Parks
The book Davy Crockett is about one of the most famous men in the history of America. It tells about how he became a great hunter with Daniel Boone. One of my favorite parts is where he defended the Alamoe for his country. The book is great if I had a choice from 1to 10 I wold give it a flat 10 all because of its description and its pictures. This is the kind of book that I would conceders to people that love to learn about history.
The author is Aileen Wells Parks. If you ask me I think she writes good books for all ages. I think she should write more and more books for men, women, and children. I encourage her to write more.
The date this book was published was 1986.
A brief discription is when he goes to hunt for his first time he dosen't bring anything home. But the next week when he goes to hunt he finds a new friend named Danile Boone.

4 out of 5 stars Tim Murphy, Sharpshooter and American Hero.......2007-02-16

This is a novel based upon documented events in the life of Tim Murphy, a sharpshooter and frontiersmen who fought in the American Revolution from the siege of Boston to the British surrender at Yorktown. He is generally credited by historians with shooting General Simon Fraser off his horse at the second battle of Saratoga with his double barrel rifle, thus turning the tide in one of the war's most important engagements. Full of local history, especially life in the Schoharie Valley and central New York when it was still the frontier and historical figures like Benedict Arnold before he turned traitor. The savagery of life on the frontier and fighting with the Indians and Tories in the area is fascinating. Tim Murphy is one of those men in the ranks who win our wars while generals get all the credit.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2001-12-31

My father gave me a copy of this book in the early 1960s. I believe it is a first edition, copyrighted by John Brick and published by Doubleday in 1953. After almost forty years, I just reread it. Wonderful! Rich in historical detail occurring during and before the American Revolution, it centers on the character and exploits of Tim Murphy, who is a woodsman, trapper, soldier, and sharpshooter. The author presents in fictional form the life of the protagonist, who lived and was something of a legend in his day. The author states that the book is based upon as many notes, letters, and factual accounts of Tim Murphy as he could collect. The plot is well-developed, the characters vividly real. "The Rifleman" will be particularly interesting to anyone who enjoys American history, as well as those who appreciate the workmanship and artistry attendant to the making and shooting of the "long rifles" of the period. The book is as really good, perhaps better (!) than when I read it at about age 16. Snap up a copy! You won't be able to put it down!

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......1997-12-12

Aside from a few historical flaws, mostly dealing with the costume of the time, this is a truly great book. Anybody who is an American and proud of the men who fought to gain our freedom needs to at least read this book. Anybody who is the least bit interested in American history should keep it on their shelves. It truly is a masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars A great novel of the war of independence.......1997-10-20

This great novel follows sharpshooter Tim Murphy and his friend Dave Ellerson through the days of the war against the British. Being free men of the wilderness before the war, they have to fight to free themselves from British rule and after that they have to fight to remain free. Their adventures make great reading, but John Brick also takes an intense look at the characters of his protagonists. This makes The Rifleman a book which belongs in everybody's library.

5 out of 5 stars Cultural Analysis of an Iconic Classic TV Show.......2007-08-04

What do you know. A sort of Marxian analysis--I mean that in a good way--of the TV western's origin and place in the 50's. Of course, this analysis is specific to The Rifleman which differed from the competing genre fare in important ways. Episodes are recounted for their cultural origins and reflections interwoven with bio on Chuck, Johnny, Sam Peckinpah, and that way too cool 44-40. This work also contains an episode list. Small book, nicely produced, photos. Recommended for the thinking fan.

3 out of 5 stars Short, but Sweet.......2006-04-10

The book may be somewhat misleading...as I suspected it was a tradepaper large edition; however, it's about the size of a 5X7 photo and a very thin book...overall a fine read just the same.

Book Description

Several thousand Native Americans fought on both sides during the American Civil War. They came from various the tribes in the Indian Territory of present-day eastern Oklahoma. They were organized into regiments of mounted riflemen - troops that could fight from the saddle or dismounted in the plains and rolling hills. Confederate Indians were organized into regiments by tribe, with Cherokees eventually raising three regiments, and the Unionists were organized into the Indian Brigade of three regiments. This book explores their lives from enlistment through to discharge and examines how they trained, lived and fought.

1 out of 5 stars Historically Inaccurate.......2006-11-10

As is typical of this sort of book, there are numerous historical inaccuracies in the text. Although the book contains a reasonable bibliography, these sources were apparently not used in creating the text of the book. Unfortunately, many persons will purchase this book and assume that it is factual and get a distorted view of the American Civil War in the Indian Territory and of the Indian participants in the war.

I should mention that the art work is excellent and presents a reasonable representation based on limited sources and scant photos from the period.
